우리가 하는 모든 일에서

1524 년 마틴 루터는 “상인들 사이에는 최고의 격언이자 규범 같은 것이 있는데... 그것은 내게 이윤이 되고 욕심만 채워진다면 내 이웃에 대해서는 상관하지 않는 것이다”라고 했습니다. 200년이 더 지나서 뉴저지주 마운트홀리에 살던 존 울먼은 예수를 믿는 믿음으로 자신의 양복점 사업을 다르게 운영했습니다. 노예 해방을 지지하기 위한 한 방편으로 강제노동을 시키는 회사로부터는 목화나 염료 상품을 구매하지 않은 것입니다. 그는 양심의 거리낌 없이 이웃을 사랑하고, 모든 거래에 있어 정직과 성실을 실천했습니다.

바울 사도는 “하나님의 거룩함과 진실함”(고린도후서 1:12)을 따라 살려고 끊임없이 노력했습니다. 고린도에 있는 일부 사람들이 예수님의 사도로서의 그의 권위를 약화시키려고 했을 때 바울은 그들 가운데서 자신의 행실을 변호했습니다. 그는 자신의 말과 행동은 어떤 신랄한 비판에도 견딜 수 있다고 기록했습니다(13절). 또한 그는 자기 자신이 아니라 하나님의 능력과 은혜에 의지하여 일한다는 것을 보여주었습니다(12절). 다시 말해 그리스도에 대한 바울의 믿음은 그의 모든 활동에 스며들어 있었습니다.

IN ALL OUR DEALINGS

In 1524, Martin Luther observed: “Among themselves the merchants have a common rule which is their chief maxim. . . . I care nothing about my neighbor; so long as I have my profit and satisfy my greed.” More than two hundred years later, John Woolman, from Mount Holly, New Jersey, let his commitment to Jesus influence his tailor shop dealings. Out of support for the freeing of slaves, he refused to purchase any cotton or dye supplies from companies that used forced labor. With a clear conscience, he loved his neighbor and lived according to integrity and sincerity in all his dealings.

The apostle Paul strived to live out “integrity and godly sincerity” (2 CORINTHIANS 1:12). When some in Corinth tried to undermine his authority as an apostle for Jesus, he defended his conduct among them. He wrote that his words and actions could withstand the closest scrutiny (V. 13). He also showed that he was dependent on God’s power and grace for effectiveness, not his own (V. 12). In short, Paul’s faith in Christ permeated all his dealings.

As we live as ambassadors for Jesus, may we be careful to let the good news ring out in all our dealings—family, business, and more. When by God’s power and grace we reveal His love to others, we honor Him and love our neighbors well. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

동시에 뛰는 심장박동

이야기는 창조의 시초부터 인간의 마음을 사로잡았습니다. 문자 언어가 존재하기 오래전부터 지식을 전달하는 방법은 이야기였고, 우리는 모두 “옛날 옛적에”로 시작하는 이야기를 듣거나 읽을 때 순식간에 빠져드는 그 즐거움을 잘 알고 있습니다. 이야기의 힘은 단순한 즐거움을 뛰어넘는 것 같습니다. 함께 이야기를 들을 때 우리의 심장이 같이 뛰는 것을 느낍니다. 개인의 심장박동은 하루 중 여러 번 바뀌고 다른 사람의 심장 박동과는 우연히 일치할 수도 있지만, 새로운 연구에 따르면 같은 시간에 같은 이야기를 들을 때에 모두의 심장이 같은 박자로 뛸 수 있다는 것입니다.

하나님은 “태초에”라는 말로 그분의 이야기를 시작하십니다(창세기 1:1). 아담과 하와가 첫 숨을 쉬었던 그 순간부터(27절) 하나님께서는 우리 개개인의 삶뿐 아니라 아마도 더 중요하게는 하나님의 자녀로서 우리의 공동체적 삶을 만드시기 위해 이야기를 시작하셨습니다. 기록된 논픽션 가운데 가장 장엄한 이야기인 성경을 통해 예수를 믿는 우리의 심장은 그분의 목적을 위해 구별된 사람들로서 함께 연결되었습니다(베드로전서 2:9).

그에 대한 반응으로 저자이신 하나님의 창조적인 역사로 인해 기뻐하며 우리의 심장이 서로 연결되어 같은 박자로 뛰기를 바랍니다. 그리고 다른 사람들과 그분의 이야기를 나누며, “그의 영광을 백성들 가운데에 그의 기이한 행적을 만민 가운데에 선포”(시편 96:3)하여 그들도 그 이야기 안에 들어오도록 초대할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

BEATING AS ONE

Stories have captivated humans since the dawn of creation— functioning as a way to pass down knowledge long before written language existed. We’ve all known the delight of hearing or reading a story and being immediately engaged by such opening lines as “Once upon a time.” The power of a story appears to extend beyond merely enjoyment: when we listen to a story together, our heartbeats seem to synchronize! Though our individual heartbeats vary over the course of a day, and might only match another’s coincidentally, new research indicates our hearts may all fall into the same rhythm when we hear the same story at the same time.

God begins telling us His story with the words, “In the beginning” (GENESIS 1:1). From the moment Adam and Eve first drew breath (V. 27), God has used that unfolding story to shape not just our individual lives but also—and perhaps more importantly—our collective lives as His children. Through the Bible—the most magnificent nonfiction story ever recorded—our hearts as believers in Jesus are joined together as people set apart for His purposes (1 PETER 2:9).

In response, may our hearts beat in shared rhythm, delighted by the Author’s creative works. And may we share His story with others, declaring “his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples” (PSALM 96:3), inviting them to become part of it too. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

두려울 때엔

정기검진 날짜가 잡혔습니다. 최근 건강엔 별문제가 없었지만 그래도 병원 가는 것이 꺼림칙했습니다. 오래전 예기치 못한 진단을 받았던 그 기억이 살아난 것입니다. 하나님께서 나와 함께 하시고 그분을 믿기만 하면 된다는 것을 알면서도 여전히 두려웠습니다.

나는 나 자신의 두려움과 부족한 믿음에 실망했습니다. 하나님이 나와 언제나 함께 하신다면서 왜 그런 불안감을 가졌던 걸까요? 그러던 중 어느 날 아침 하나님이 기드온의 이야기를 읽게 하셨습니다.

“큰 용사”라고 불렸던(사사기 6:12) 기드온은 미디안 사람들을 치라는 임무를 받고 두려웠습니다. 하나님이 그와 함께 하실 것과 승리를 약속하였어도 그는 여전히 하나님의 확실한 징표를 수차례나 더 구했습니다(16-23, 36-40절).

하지만 하나님은 두려워하는 기드온을 나무라지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 그를 이해하셨습니다. 공격을 앞둔 그 밤에 하나님은 기드온에게 다시금 승리를 약속하시며 두려움을 누그러뜨리는 방법을 알려주기도 하셨습니다(7:10-11). 하나님은 나의 두려움도 이해하셨습니다. 하나님이 주시는 확신으로 나는 담대하게 하나님을 신뢰하게 되었습니다. 나는 결과가 어떻든 하나님께서 나와 함께 하실 것을 알고 하나님의 평화를 경험했습니다. 결국 검진 결과 아무 이상이 없었습니다.

우리에게는 우리의 두려움들을 이해하시고, 말씀과 성령을 통하여 우리를 안심시켜 주시는 하나님이 계십니다(시편 23:4; 요한복음 14:16-17). 우리도 기드온처럼 감사함으로 하나님을 경배합시다(사사기 7:15).

WHEN YOU’RE AFRAID

I had a medical checkup scheduled, and although I’d had no recent health concerns, I dreaded the visit. I was haunted by memories of an unexpected diagnosis long ago. While I knew God was with me and I should simply trust Him, I still felt afraid.

I was disappointed in my fear and lack of faith. If God was always with me, why was I feeling such anxiety? Then one morning I believe He led me to the story of Gideon.

Called “mighty warrior” (JUDGES 6:12), Gideon was fearful over his assignment to attack the Midianites. Although God had promised him His presence and victory, Gideon still sought multiple reassurances (VV. 16−23, 36−40).

However, God didn’t condemn Gideon for his fear. He understood him. On the night of the attack, He assured Gideon again of victory, even giving him a way to assuage his fears (7:10−11).

God understood my fear too. His reassurance gave me the courage to trust Him. I experienced His peace, knowing that He was with me regardless of the outcome. In the end, my checkup was uneventful.

We have a God who understands our fears and who reassures us through the Scriptures and the Spirit (PSALM 23:4; JOHN 14:16−17). May we worship Him in thankfulness, just as Gideon did (JUDGES 7:15). - KAREN HUANG

완벽한 성탄절 카드

바커 가족의 성탄절 영상은 완벽했습니다. 세 가지 종류의 예복을 입은 목동들(집안의 어린 남자아이들)이 무성한 풀밭 위 불가에 옹기종기 앉아 있었습니다. 갑자기 언덕 위에서 한 천사가 내려왔습니다. 큰누나였는데, 발목까지 오는 분홍색 운동화를 빼고는 눈부시게 빛나는 모습으로 등장했습니다. 배경 음악이 점점 웅장해지면서 목동들이 놀란 표정으로 하늘을 바라보았습니다. 초원을 가로지르는 길을 따르니 한 아기에게 다다랐습니다. 현대식으로 지은 헛간 안에 있는 갓난 남동생이었습니다. 큰누나가 이제는 마리아 역할을 하고 있었습니다.

이어서 아이들 아버지가 관객들에게 무대 뒷모습을 공개하는 “보너스 영상”이 시작되었습니다. 그것을 보니 아이들은 “추워요” “화장실 급해요” “집에 가도 돼요?”라며 투덜거렸습니다. “얘들아, 집중하렴!” 어머니가 아이들에게 여러 번 주의를 주었습니다. 그들의 진짜 모습은 완벽한 성탄절 카드와는 거리가 많이 멀었습니다.

우리는 성탄절의 이야기를 잘 편집된 비디오의 최종본처럼 보아 넘기기 쉽습니다. 하지만 예수님의 삶은 전혀 평탄한 삶이 아니었습니다. 질투심에 불타는 헤롯은 갓난아기였던 예수님을 죽이려고 했고(마태복음 2:13), 마리아와 요셉도 주님을 제대로 알지 못했고(누가복음 2:41-50), 세상은 그를 미워했습니다. (요한복음 7:7). 한 동안은 “그 형제들까지도 예수를 믿지 아니하였다”(7:5)고 했습니다. 예수님은 사명대로 처참한 모습으로 돌아가셨습니다. 예수님은 이 모든 것을 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리고 우리를 구하기 위해 하셨습니다.

바커 가족의 비디오는 예수님께서 하신 이 말씀으로 끝을 맺었습니다. “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요한복음 14:6). 이 말씀대로 살 때 우리는 영생을 누릴 수 있습니다.

CHRISTMAS-CARD PERFECT

The Barker family Christmas video was perfect. Three robe-clad shepherds (the family’s young sons) huddled around a fire in a grassy field. Suddenly an angel descended from the hilltop—their big sister, looking resplendent, except for the pink high-top sneakers. As the soundtrack swelled, the shepherds stared skyward in amazement. A trek across a field led them to a real baby—their infant brother in a modern barn. Big sister now played the role of Mary.

Then came the “bonus features,” when their dad let us peek behind the scenes. Whiny kids complained, “I’m cold.” “I have to go to the bathroom right now!” “Can we go home?” “Guys, pay attention,” said their mom more than once. Reality was far from Christmas-card perfect.

It’s easy to view the original Christmas story through the lens of a well-edited final cut. But Jesus’ life was anything but smooth. A jealous Herod tried to kill Him in infancy (MATTHEW 2:13). Mary and Joseph misunderstood Him (LUKE 2:41–50). The world hated Him (JOHN 7:7). For a time, “even his own brothers did not believe in him” (7:5). His mission led to a grisly death. He did it all to honor His Father and rescue us.

The Barkers’ video ended with these words of Jesus: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (JOHN 14:6). That’s a reality we can live with—forever. - TIM GUSTAFSON

하나님 말씀의 능력

담당한다고 확증해 주시는(10-13절), 삶을 변화시키는 성경말씀을 나눌 기회를 우리에게 주십니다.

하나님 아버지께서 완벽한 계획과 시간에 맞추어 그분의 약속을 이루어 나가실 때에 성령님은 우리를 도와 복음을 나누게 하십니다.

THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD

On Christmas Eve 1968, the Apollo 8 astronauts—Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders—became the first humans to enter lunar orbit. As they circled the moon ten times, they shared images of the moon and the Earth. During a live broadcast, they took turns reading from Genesis 1. At the fortieth anniversary celebration, Borman said, “We were told that on Christmas Eve we would have the largest audience that had ever listened to a human voice. And the only instructions that we got from NASA was to do something appropriate.” The Bible verses spoken by the Apollo 8 astronauts still plant seeds of truth into the listening hearts of people who hear the historical recording.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God says, “Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live” (ISAIAH 55:3). Revealing His free offer of salvation, He invites us to turn from our sin and receive His mercy and forgiveness (VV. 6–7). He declares the divine authority of His thoughts and His actions, which are too vast for us to truly understand (VV. 8–9). Still, God gives us opportunity to share His life-transforming words of Scripture, which point to Jesus, and affirm that He is responsible for the spiritual growth of His people (VV. 10–13).

The Holy Spirit helps us share the gospel as the Father fulfills all His promises according to His perfect plan and pace. - XOCHITL DIXON

할머니 고래

연구원들이 “할머니”라고 이름 지은 한 범고래는 “손주 고래”의 삶에서 자신의 역할이 얼마나 중요한지 잘 알고 있었던 것 같았습니다. 그 어린 고래의 어미가 최근에 죽었는데, 고아가 된 고래는 아직 어려서 보호나 지원 없이는 살아갈 수가 없었습니다. 나이가 여든이 넘었음에도 할머니 고래는 손주 곁에 머물며 생존에 필요한 지식을 가르쳤습니다. 할머니는 물고기 떼를 혼자 다 먹지 않고 그 어린 고래에게 얼마간 몰아주었습니다. 이렇게 한 것은 손주가 굶지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 무엇을 먹어야 할지 그리고 사는데 필요한 연어들을 어디서 찾아야 할지를 배우게 하기 위해서였습니다.

우리도 후손들에게 하나님의 놀라운 역사와 성품에 대해 우리가 아는 것을 전할 수 있는 특별한 영광과 기쁨을 누립니다. 노년의 시편 기자는 하나님께 “주의 힘을 후대에 전하게” 해 달라고 요청합니다(시편 71:18). 그는 자기가 하나님에 대해 아는 것, 곧 살아가는데 필요한 “주의 공의와 구원”(15 절)을 다른 사람들과 나누기를 진심으로 원했습니다.

우리가 아직 늙어서 백발이 되지 않았더라도(18절) 체험했던 하나님의 사랑과 신실하심을 선포하는 일은 누군가의 믿음의 여정에 도움이 될 수 있습니다. 깨달은 지혜를 나누고자 하는 우리의 마음은 역경 가운데서도 그리스도 안에서 풍성한 삶을 살려고 하는 사람에게 가장 필요한 것일지도 모릅니다(20절).

GRANNY WHALE

An orca whale, who researchers have named “Granny,” apparently knew the importance of her role in the life of her “grandbaby whale.” The young whale’s mother had recently died, and the orphaned whale was not yet old enough to thrive without protection and support. Granny, though in her eighties (or older), came alongside to teach him what he needed to know to survive. Granny corralled some fish for the younger whale instead of consuming them herself, so he would not only have a meal but would also learn what to eat and where to find the salmon he’d need to live.

We too have the distinct honor and joy of passing on what we know—we can share about the wonderful works and character of God with those coming after us. The aging psalmist asks God to allow him to “declare [His] power to the next generation” (PSALM 71:18). He earnestly wishes to share with others what he knows of God—His “righteous deeds” and “saving acts”—that we need to flourish (V. 15).

Even if we don’t have the gray hairs of old age (V. 18), declaring how we’ve experienced the love and faithfulness of God can benefit someone on their journey with Him. Our willingness to share that wisdom might just be what that person needs to live and thrive in Christ even in adversity (V. 20). - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

몸을 낮추어

한젊은 엄마가 조그만 자전거를 탄 딸아이의 뒤를 따라가고 있었습니다. 아이는 짧은 다리로 있는 힘껏 페달을 밟았습니다. 그런데 생각보다 속도가 빨라지면서 이 작은 아이가 그만 자전거에서 굴러떨어져 발목이 아프다고 울음을 터뜨렸습니다. 엄마는 조용히 무릎을 꿇어 몸을 낮춘 다음 “고통이 사라지도록” 발목에 뽀뽀를 했습니다. 그랬더니 정말 효과가 나타났습니다! 아이는 금방 일어나더니 자전거에 올라 페달을 밟으며 갔습니다. 우리의 모든 고통이 그렇게 쉽게 없어진다면 얼마나 좋을까요!

바울 사도는 힘든 일들이 연속 일어나는 가운데에도 하나님의 위로를 경험하고 계속 앞으로 나갈 수 있었습니다. 고린도후서 11:23-29에는 초대교회들에 대한 걱정뿐 아니라, 채찍질과 태장을 당하고, 돌에 맞고, 잠을 재우지 않고 굶기는 등, 그가 당한 고난들이 일부 열거되어 있습니다. 그는 하나님께서 “자비의 아버지시요 모든 위로의 하나님”(1:3)이심을 친히 배웠습니다. 어떤 영어 번역본에서는 이 구절을 “하나님은 우리를 부드럽고 포근하게 사랑해주시는 아버지”라고 번역했습니다. 마치 딸아이를 위로하는 엄마처럼 하나님께서는 몸을 낮추어 고통 중에 있는 우리를 부드럽고 포근하게 보살펴 주십니다.

하나님께서 우리를 위로하시는 사랑의 방법은 다양합니다. 포기하지 말고 계속해 나갈 것을 권면하는 성경 구절을 주실 때도 있고, 누군가를 통해 특별한 편지를 받게 하실 때도 있고, 친구의 전화를 통해 우리의 영혼을 만지실 때도 있습니다. 힘든 일들이 끝나지 않을 때에도 하나님께서 몸을 낮추어 우리를 도와주시기 때문에 우리는 다시 일어나서 페달을 계속 밟을 수 있는 것입니다.

BENDING LOW

A young mom followed behind her daughter, who pedaled her tiny bike as fast as her little legs could go. But picking up more speed than she wanted, the little girl suddenly rolled off the bike and cried that her ankle hurt. Her mom quietly got down on her knees, bent down low, and kissed it to “make the pain go away.” And it worked! The little girl jumped up, climbed back on her bike, and pedaled on. Don’t you wish all our pains could go away that easily!

The apostle Paul experienced the comfort of God in his continual struggles yet kept going. He listed some of those trials in 2 Corinthians 11:23–29: floggings, beatings, stonings, sleep deprivation, hunger, concerns for all the churches. He learned intimately that God is “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (1:3) or as another version translates it: “He is the Father who gives tender love” (nirv). Much like a mom comforting her child, God bends down low to tenderly care for us in our pain.

God’s loving ways of comforting us are many and varied. He may give us a Scripture verse that encourages us to continue on, or He may have someone send a special note or prompt a friend to give us a call that touches our spirit. While the struggle may not go away, because God bends down low to help us, we can get up and pedal on. - ANNE CETAS

귀한 기도

북미의 산갈가마귀는 놀라운 능력을 가진 새입니다. 매년 백송 나무 씨앗을 4-5개씩을 곳곳에 숨겨 놓고 월동준비를 하는 이 새는 시간당 500개까지 숨길 수 있습니다. 그런 다음 수개월 후 돌아와서 숨겨둔 씨앗을 찾아내는데, 눈 속 깊이 묻혀있는 것들도 찾아냅니다. 산갈가마귀는 씨앗이 숨겨져 있는 위치를 1만 개까지 기억할 수 있습니다. 정말 놀랄 일이지요. (우리 인간들이 자동차 열쇠나 안경 같은 것들을 어디다 두었는지 기억하지 못하는 것을 생각해보면 더욱 그렇습니다.)

하지만 이 놀라운 기억력도 우리의 기도를 기억하시는 주님의 능력에 비하면 별것이 아닙니다. 주님께서는 우리가 진심으로 드리는 모든 기도를 기억하시며, 심지어 여러 해가 지난 후에도 응답하실 수 있는 분입니다. 요한계시록에서 요한 사도는 천국에서 주님께 예배드리는 “네 생물”과 “이십사 장로”를 묘사할 때, 각각 “향이 가득한 금 대접을 가졌으니 이 향은 성도의 기도들이라”(5:8)고 이야기합니다.

고대 사회에서 향을 귀하게 여긴 것처럼, 하나님께서는 우리의 기도를 그분 앞에 놓인 금 대접에 소중히 간직하실 만큼 귀하게 여기십니다! ‘우리’가 주님께 중요한 존재인 만큼 우리의 기도도 주님께 중요합니다. 그리고 받을 자격 없는 우리에게 그리스도를 보내주신 긍휼하심을 통해 우리는 언제든 하나님의 보좌 앞에 나아갈 수 있습니다(히브리서 4:14-16). 그러므로 담대하게 기도합시다! 그리고 하나님의 놀라운 사랑으로 인해 단 한 마디의 기도도
잊히거나 실수로 버려지지 않는다는 것을 잊지 맙시다.

TREASURED PRAYER

The Clark’s Nutcracker is an amazing bird. Every year it prepares for winter by hiding tiny caches of four or five white- bark pine seeds, as many as five hundred seeds per hour. Then, months later, it returns to uncover the seeds, even under heavy snow. A Clark’s Nutcracker may remember as many as ten thousand locations where it has hidden seeds—an astounding feat (especially when you consider the difficulty we humans can have remembering the location of our car keys or glasses).

But even this incredible act of memory pales in comparison with God’s ability to remember our prayers. He’s able to keep track of every sincere prayer and remember and respond to them even years later. In the book of Revelation, the apostle John describes “four living creatures” and “twenty-four elders” worshiping the Lord in heaven. Each one was “holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people” (5:8).

Just as incense was precious in the ancient world, our prayers are so precious to God that He keeps them before Him continually, treasured in golden bowls! Our prayers matter to God because we matter to him, and through His undeserved kindness to us in Jesus He offers us uninhibited access (HEBREWS 4:14–16). So pray boldly! And know that not a word will be forgotten or misplaced because of the amazing love of God. - JAMES BANKS

저주하지 말라

윌리엄 셰익스피어는 욕의 달인이었습니다. 배우 배리 크래프트가 ‘욕쟁이 셰익스피어’라는 책에서 이 “재능”을 활용할 정도였습니다. 이 기발한 책은 셰익스피어의 희곡들에 나오는 묘한 욕설들로 구성되어 있습니다. 예를 들면, 누군가를 비하할 때 “넌 아무리 뽐내봤자 바보잖아, 건달 놈아!”라고 하지 않고, “그대는 허풍선이요, 머리는 통나무요, 한낱 가련한 존재로다”라는 식으로 말하면 훨씬 그럴듯해집니다.

크래프트의 이 책은 가볍게 읽기에는 아주 재미있습니다. 그러나 고대 모압의 왕은 신비스러운 예언자에게 돈을 주어 이스라엘 사람들을 단순히 모욕할 뿐만 아니라 노골적으로 저주하려고 했습니다. 발락 왕은 발람에게 “와서 나를 위하여 이 백성을 저주하라”고 말했습니다(민수기 22:6). 그런데 오히려 발람은 히브리 백성을 여러 번 축복함으로써 왕을 격분시켰습니다 (24:10). 그의 축복 중 하나는 “내가 그를 보아도 이 때의 일이 아니며 내가 그를 바라보아도 가까운 일이 아니로다”(24:17)와 같은 예언도 있었습니다. 발람이 보는 그 사람은 아직 그곳에 있지 않은 것이 분명합니다. 그렇다면 발람이 말하는 사람은 누구일까요? 그 다음 내용에 단서가 있습니다. “야곱에게서 한 별이 나오며 이스라엘에서 한 왕이 일어나”(17절, 현대인의 성경). 그 “별”은 훗날 동방 박사들을 약속된 아기인 예수님께로 데려다주게 됩니다(마태복음 2:1–2).

메시아에 대해 아무것도 몰랐던 고대 메소포타미아의 한 예언자는 그분의 오심을 나타내는 미래의 징조를 세상에 알렸습니다. 아무도 예상하지 못했던 사람에게서 저주가 아닌 축복이 온 것입니다.

NO CURSING

William Shakespeare was a master of the insult, a “quality” that actor Barry Kraft adeptly leverages with his Shakespeare Insult Generator. The clever book consists of obscure insults drawn from Shakespeare’s plays. For instance, you might disparage someone by saying, “Thou thrasonical, logger-headed rampallian”—which is so much more creative than saying, “You brag a lot and you’re not very smart, you scoundrel!”

Kraft’s light-hearted book is in good fun. But an ancient king of Moab tried to pay a mysterious prophet not merely to insult the Israelites but to outright curse them. “Come and put a curse on these people,” King Balak told Balaam (NUMBERS 22:6). Instead, Balaam enraged the king by blessing the Hebrew people—multiple times (24:10). One of his blessings included this prophecy: “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near” (24:17). Clearly the individual in view is not yet on the scene, but just who is Balaam talking about? The next line holds a clue. “A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel” (V. 17). The “star” would one day lead wise men to the promised Child (MATTHEW 2:1–2).

An ancient Mesopotamian prophet who knew nothing of Messiah pointed the world to a future sign declaring His arrival. From an unlikely source came not cursing, but blessing. - TIM GUSTAFSON

믿음으로 굳게 서서

1998년에 노키아는 핸드폰 매출 1위의 회사가 되었고, 1999년에는 거의 40억 달러의 흑자를 기록했습니다. 그러나 이후 판매가 감소하며 쇠퇴해가던 이 핸드폰 회사는 2011년에 급기야 마이크로소프트사에 인수되었습니다. 두려움이 지배하는 직장 문화 때문에 치명적인 결정들을 계속 내렸던 것이 노키아 핸드폰 사업부가 실패한 요인 중 하나였습니다. 관리자들은 해고될까 두려워 노키아 핸드폰의 뒤처진 운영체제와 그 외의 디자인 문제들에 대해 사실대로 이야기하는 것을 주저했던 것입니다.

STANDING FIRM BY FAITH

Nokia became the world’s best-selling mobile phone company in 1998 and saw profits rise to nearly four billion dollars in 1999. But by 2011, sales were diminishing and soon the failing phone brand was acquired by Microsoft. One factor in Nokia’s mobile division failure was a fear-based work culture that led to disastrous decisions. Managers were reluctant to tell the truth about the Nokia phone’s inferior operating system and other design problems for fear of being fired.

King Ahaz of Judah and his people were fearful—“shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind” (ISAIAH 7:2). They knew that the kings of Israel and Aram (Syria) had allied, and their combined armies were marching to Judah to take it over (VV. 5–6). Although God used Isaiah to encourage Ahaz by telling him his enemies’ hostile plans would “not happen” (V. 7), the foolish leader fearfully chose to ally with Assyria and submit to the superpower’s king (2 KINGS 16:7–8). He didn’t trust in God, who declared, “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all” (ISAIAH 7:9).

The writer of Hebrews helps us consider what it looks like to stand firm in faith today: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” (10:23). May we press on and not “shrink back” (V. 39) as the Holy Spirit empowers us to trust in Jesus. - TOM FELTEN
