내주하시는 그리스도

영국의 목회자 F.B. 메이어(1847-1929)는 “심오한 그리스도의 내주하심” 이라고 불렀던 그의 주제를 설명하기 위해 달걀을 예로 들었습니다. 그는 조그마한 “생명 발아체”인 수정된 노른자가 어떻게 매일 조금씩 자라 껍질 안에서 병아리가 되는지에 주목했습니다. 이처럼 예수님도 우리에게 오셔서 성령을 통해 우리와 함께 거하시며 우리를 변화시켜 주실 것입니다. 메이어 목사님은 “이제부터 그리스도께서 자라가고 커져가며 다른 모든 것을 자신 안에 흡수하시면서 여러분 안에서 형체를 이루어 가실 것입니다.”라고 말했습니다.

그러나 그리스도께서 성령으로 믿는 자 가운데 거하시는 놀라운 사실을 자기의 말로는 다 표현할 수 없음을 잘 알았던 그는 예수님의 내주하심에 관한 자신의 설명은 완전한 게 아니라고 이해를 구했습니다. 하지만 그는 말로 완벽히 표현할 수 없다 해도 예수님이 하신 다음 말씀의 의미를 사람들에게 전하라고 당부했습니다. “그 날에는 내가 아버지 안에 너희가 내 안에 내가 너희 안에 있는 것을 너희가 알리라”(요한복음 14:20). 이것은 예수님이 제자들과 최후의 만찬을 나누시던 밤에 하셨던 말씀입니다. 주님은 하나님과 함께 오셔서 그분께 순종하는 이들과 거처를 함께 하실 것임을 제자들이 알기를 원하셨습니다(23절). 그것이 가능한 이유는 예수님이 성령을 통해 그를 믿는 자들 안에 내주하시기 때문입니다. 예수님은 그렇게 믿는 자들을 내부로부터 변화시켜 주십니다.

우리가 그것을 어떻게 상상하든, 그리스도는 우리 안에 살아 계시고, 우리를 인도하시고, 우리가 그분을 더욱 닮아 갈 수 있도록 우리를 돕고 계십니다

THE INDWELLING CHRIST

English preacher F. B. Meyer (1847–1929) used the example of an egg to illustrate what he called “the deep philosophy of the indwelling Christ.” He noted how the fertilized yolk is a little “life germ” that grows more and more each day until the chick is formed in the shell. So too will Jesus come to live with us through His Holy Spirit, changing us. Meyer said, “From now on Christ is going to grow and increase and absorb into Himself everything else, and be formed in you.”

He apologized for stating the truths of Jesus imperfectly, knowing that his words couldn’t fully convey the wonderful reality of Christ dwelling in believers through the Holy Spirit. But he urged his listeners to share with others, however imperfectly, what Jesus meant when He said, “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” (JOHN 14:20). Jesus said these words on the night of His last supper with His friends. He wanted them to know that He and His Father would come and make their home with those who obey Him (V. 23). This is possible because through the Spirit Jesus dwells in those who believe in Him, changing them from the inside out.

No matter how you picture it, we have Christ living inside us, guiding us and helping us to grow to be more like Him.

살아 있다는 신호

내 딸은 애완용 게 두 마리를 선물 받고 큰 유리상자에 모래를 넣어주어 게들이 오르기도 하고 구멍도 팔 수 있게 해 주었습니다. 게들이 즐겁게 먹도록 물과 단백질, 그리고 야채 부스러기도 주었습니다. 이렇게 잘 지내는 것 같던 게들이 어느 날 사라져 무척 놀랐습니다. 우리는 온 사방을 다 찾아보았습니다. 그러다가 마침내 게들이 아마도 모래 아래 있으면서 약 두 달에 걸쳐 껍질 갈이를 할 거라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

두 달이 지나고 한 달이 더 흐르며 게들이 죽지 않았나 걱정되기 시작했습니다. 기다리면서 초조함은 더해갔습니다. 드디어 우리는 살아 있다는 신호를 포착했고, 이어서 게들은 모래 위로 모습을 드러냈습니다.

이스라엘 백성들이 바벨론에 끌려가 살았을 때 하나님의 예언이 과연 이루어질지 의심이 들지 않았을까요? 낙심하여 거기서 영원히 살게 될까 걱정하지 않았을까요? 그러나 하나님은 예레미야 선지자를 통해 이미 말씀하셨습니다 “바벨론에서 칠십 년이 차면 내가 너희를 돌보고 나의 선한 말을 너희에게 성취하여 너희를 이곳[예루살렘]으로 돌아오게 하리라” (예레미야 29:10). 말씀하신 그대로 70년이 지나서 하나님은 바사왕 고레스를 통하여 유대인들의 예루살렘 귀환과 성전 복구를 허락하셨습니다(에스라 1:1-4).

아무런 변화의 조짐도 없이 그냥 기다려야 하는 시간에도 하나님은 우리를 잊지 않으십니다. 성령님이 우리를 도와 참을성을 키우실 때, 우리는 하나님이 소망을 주시는 분, 약속을 지키시는 분, 미래를 주관하시는 분인 것을 알게 됩니다.

SIGNS OF LIFE

When my daughter received a pair of pet crabs as a gift, she filled a glass tank with sand so the creatures could climb and dig. She supplied water, protein, and vegetable scraps for their dining pleasure. They seemed happy, so it was shocking when they disappeared one day. We searched everywhere. Finally, we learned they were likely under the sand, and would be there for about two months as they shed their exoskeletons.

Two months passed, and then another month elapsed, and I had begun to worry that they’d died. The longer we waited, the more impatient I became. Then, finally, we saw signs of life, and the crabs emerged from the sand.

I wonder if Israel doubted that God’s prophecy for them would be fulfilled when they lived as exiles in Babylon. Did they feel despair? Did they worry they’d be there forever? Through Jeremiah, God had said, “I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to [Jerusalem]” (JEREMIAH 29:10). Sure enough, seventy years later, God caused the Persian king Cyrus to allow the Jews to return and rebuild their temple in Jerusalem (EZRA 1:1–4).

In seasons of waiting when it seems like nothing is happening, God hasn’t forgotten us. As the Holy Spirit helps us to develop patience, we can know that He’s the Hope-Giver, the Promise- Keeper, and the One who controls the future.

베이비 보이

일년 넘도록 아기의 공식 이름은 “베이비 보이”였습니다. 태어난 지 몇 시간 만에 그냥 싸인 채 가방 속에 담겨 병원 주차장에 버려진 베이비 보이는 아기 울음소리를 들은 경비원에게 발견되었습니다.

발견되고 얼마 후 사회복지 기관에서는 아기에게 나중에 정식으로 가족이 될 만한 분에게 연락했습니다. 그 부부는 아기를 돌보기로 하고 임시로 그레이슨이라고 불렀습니다. 마침내 입양이 완료되어 그레이슨이 공식 이름이 되었습니다. 오늘 당신은 글자 ‘r’을 잘못 발음하면서도 이야기에 끼기 좋아하는 유쾌한 아이를 만나 볼 수 있을 겁니다. 그 아이가 한때 가방에 넣어 버려졌던 아기라고는 짐작도 못할 것입니다.

모세는 인생의 끝에 가서 하나님의 성품과 그분이 이스라엘 백성을 위해 하신 일을 되돌아보았습니다. 모세는 그들에게 “여호와께서 오직 네 조상들을 기뻐하시고 그들을 사랑하셨다”(신명기 10:15)라고 말했습니다. 이 사랑의 범위는 너무나 넓었습니다. 모세는 이렇게 말했습니다. “고아와 과부를 위하여 정의를 행하시며 나그네를 사랑하여 그에게 떡과 옷을 주시나니”(18 절), “그는 네 찬송이시요 네 하나님이시라”(21절).

입양을 하거나 단순한 사랑과 봉사를 하거나 우리 모두는 하나님의 사랑을 드러내도록 부름받았습니다. 사랑이 많았던 그 부부는 아무도 봐주지 않고 그냥 버려질 뻔했던 한 사람에게 하나님의 손과 발이 되어 사랑을 베풀었습니다. 우리도 그분의 손과 발이 될 수 있습니다.

BABY BOY

For more than a year, his legal name was “Baby Boy.” Discovered by a security guard who heard his cries, Baby Boy had been abandoned—hours old and wrapped only in a bag—in a hospital parking lot.

Soon after his discovery, Social Services called the people who would one day become his forever family. The couple took him in and called him Grayson (not his real name). Finally, the adoption was complete, and Grayson’s name became official. Today you can meet a delightful child who mispronounces his r’s as he earnestly engages you in conversation. You’d never guess he’d once been found abandoned in a bag.

Late in his life, Moses reviewed God’s character and what He’d done for the people of Israel. “The Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them,” Moses told them (DEUTERONOMY 10:15). This love had a broad scope. “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing,” Moses said (V. 18). “He is the one you praise; he is your God” (V. 21).

Whether it’s through adoption or simply through love and service, we’re all called to reflect God’s love. That loving couple became the hands and feet God used to extend His love to someone who might have gone unnoticed and unclaimed. We can serve as His hands and feet too.

여전히 사랑할 거예요?

열 살의 린린은 마침내 입양됐지만 여전히 두려웠습니다. 아이는 자라난 고아원에서 아주 작은 실수에도 벌을 받았습니다. 린린은 입양 어머니인 내 친구에게 “엄마, 나 사랑해요?”라고 물었습니다. 내 친구가 그렇다고 하자 린린은 “내가 실수해도 여전히 사랑할 거예요?”라고 물었습니다.

우리도 말로는 하지 않아도 하나님을 실망시켰다고 느껴질 때 “그래도 나를 사랑하십니까?”라는 질문을 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 이 세상에 사는 동안 때로는 실패하고 죄를 지을 것입니다. 그리고 혹시 내가 실수하면 하나님이 나를 사랑하지 않으실 거라는 생각도 하게 됩니다.

요한복음 3장 16절에서 우리는 하나님의 사랑을 확신합니다. 하나님은 그의 아들 예수님을 우리 대신 죽게 하시고 그를 믿는 사람은 영생을 얻게 하셨습니다. 그러나 믿고 난 후에도 그분을 실망시키면 어떻게 될까요? 그때에는 우리가 아직 죄인이었을 때에도 “그리스도께서 우리를 위해 죽으심” (로마서 5:8)을 기억해야 합니다. 최악의 상황에서도 우리를 사랑하신 그분인데, 지금 자녀 된 우리가 어떻게 그분의 사랑을 의심할 수 있겠습니까?

우리가 죄를 지을 때 우리 아버지께서는 사랑으로 우리를 바로잡으시고 징계하십니다. 그것은 정죄가 아니라(8:1) 사랑입니다(히브리서 12:6). 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑이 변함없고 영원하다는 복된 확신 안에서 안식하며 하나님의 사랑하는 자녀로 살아갑시다.

WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME?

Ten-year-old Lyn-Lyn had finally been adopted, but she was afraid. In the orphanage where she’d grown up, she was punished over the slightest mistake. Lyn-Lyn asked her adoptive mom, who was a friend of mine: “Mommy, do you love me?” When my friend replied yes, Lyn-Lyn asked, “If I make a mistake, will you still love me?”

Although unspoken, some of us might ask that same question when we feel we’ve disappointed God: “Will You still love me?” We know that as long as we live in this world, we’ll fail and sin at times. And we wonder, do my mistakes affect God’s love for me?

John 3:16 assures us of God’s love. He gave His Son, Jesus, to die on our behalf so that if we believe in Him, we’ll receive eternal life. But what if we fail Him even after we place our trust in Him? That’s when we need to remember that “Christ died for us” even when we were still sinners (ROMANS 5:8). If He could love us at our worst, how can we doubt His love today when we’re His children?

When we sin, our Father lovingly corrects and disciplines us. That’s not rejection (8:1); that’s love (HEBREWS 12:6). Let’s live as God’s beloved children, resting in the blessed assurance that His love for us is steadfast and everlasting.

기대 수명

1990년, 프랑스 연구자들이 잔 칼망의 나이를 계산하는데 데이터 오류로 컴퓨터에 문제가 생겼습니다. 그녀는 115세였는데 이는 당시 프로그램의 설정 범위를 벗어나는 나이였습니다. 프로그래머들은 그렇게 오래 사는 사람은 세상에 없다고 가정했던 것입니다! 실제로 잔은 122 세까지 살았습니다.

시편 기자는 “우리의 연수가 칠십이요 강건하면 팔십이라”(시편 90:10) 고 했습니다. 이는 우리가 몇 년을 살든지, 혹 잔 칼망의 나이까지 산다 해도 이 땅의 수명에는 한계가 있음을 비유적으로 표현한 것입니다. 우리의 인생은 사랑이신 하나님의 주권적인 손에 달려 있습니다(5절). 그러나 “주의 목전에는 천 년이 지나간 어제 같다”(4절)는 말씀처럼, 영적 세계에서 “하나님의 시간” 이 정말 어떤 것인지 다시 생각해 봅니다.

또한 인간으로 오신 예수님께 속한 삶에 “기대수명”은 전혀 새로운 의미를 지닙니다. “누구든지 아들을 믿는 자에게는 영생이 있다”(요한복음 3:36). 이 말씀은 현재 시제입니다. 지금 당장은 고뇌와 눈물의 물리적 시간 가운데 있지만, 우리의 미래는 복된 미래이며 수명에 제한이 없습니다.

이로 인해 우리는 기뻐하며 시편 기자처럼 “아침에 주의 인자하심이 우리를 만족하게 하사 우리를 일생 동안 즐겁고 기쁘게 하소서”(시편 90:14) 라고 기도합니다.

LIFE EXPECTANCY

In 1990, French researchers had a computer problem: a data error when processing the age of Jeanne Calment. She was 115 years old, an age outside the parameters of the software program. The programmers had assumed no one could possibly live that long! In fact, Jeanne lived until the age of 122.

The psalmist writes, “Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures” (PSALM 90:10). This is a figurative way of saying that whatever age we live to, even to the age of Jeanne Calment, our lives on earth are indeed limited. Our lifetimes are in the sovereign hands of a loving God (V. 5). In the spiritual realm, however, we’re reminded of what “God time” really is: “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by” (V. 4).

And in the person of Jesus Christ “life expectancy” has been given a whole new meaning: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (JOHN 3:36). “Has” is in the present tense: right now, in our current physical moment of trouble and tears, our future is blessed, and our lifespan is limitless.

In this we rejoice and with the psalmist pray, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (PSALM 90:14).

내가 할 일, 하나님이 하실 일

친구 재니스는 일을 시작한 지 몇 년 안되어 담당 부서의 매니저로 일 해달라는 요청을 받고 매우 당혹스러웠습니다. 이를 놓고 기도하던 중 하나님이 그 일을 맡으라고 하시는 것 같았습니다. 그러나 여전히 그 책임을 잘 감당할 수 있을지 두려웠습니다. “경험도 별로 없는 제가 어떻게 이 일을 해내겠어요? 실패하면 어쩌려고 저에게 이 일을 맡기십니까?” 하며 하나님께 물었습니다.

얼마 후에 재니스는 하나님이 아브람을 부르시는 창세기 12장을 읽으면서 그가 한 일은 “네게 보여줄 땅으로 가라... 이에 아브람이 따라갔다”(1, 4절) 는 것을 알았습니다. 살던 곳을 이처럼 쉽게 떠나지 않았던 고대에 이는 매우 무모한 행동이었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 아브람이 하나님을 믿고 익숙한 모든 것을 뒤에 두고 떠나기를 원하셨고, 나머지는 다 하나님이 하셨습니다. 하나님은 ‘너로 큰 민족을 이루리라’ 하시며 ‘정체성’을 주셨고, ‘너를 축복하리라’ 하시며 필요를 ‘공급’하셨고, ‘너에게 위대한 이름을 주리라’ 하시며 ‘명성’을 주시고, ‘온 땅의 모든 사람에게 너는 복이 될지라’ 하시며 ‘목적’을 주셨습니다. 아브라함의 여정에는 큰 실수들도 있었지만 “믿음으로 아브라함은... 순종하여 갈 바를 알지 못하고 나아갔습니다”(히브리서 11:8).

이런 깨달음으로 재니스는 마음의 큰 짐을 벗게 되었습니다. 얼마 후 그녀는 “내 일을 ‘잘 할’ 수 있을지 걱정할 필요가 없어. 나는 그저 일을 잘 할 수 있도록 하나님을 신뢰하는 데에만 초점을 맞추면 돼.”라고 말했습니다. 우리에게 필요한 믿음 주시는 하나님을 전적으로 신뢰하기를 바랍니다.

YOUR PART, GOD’S PART

When my friend Janice was asked to manage her department at work after just a few years, she felt overwhelmed. Praying over it, she felt God was prompting her to accept the appointment—but still, she feared she couldn’t cope with the responsibility. “How can I lead with so little experience?” she asked God. “Why put me here if I’m going to be a failure?”

Later, Janice was reading about God’s call of Abram in Genesis 12 and noted that his part was to “go . . . to the land [God] will show you. . . . So Abram went” (VV. 1, 4). This was a radical move, because
nobody uprooted like this in the ancient world. But God was asking him to trust Him by leaving everything he knew behind, and He would do the rest. Identity? You’ll be a great nation. Provision? I’ll bless you. Reputation? A great name. Purpose? You’ll be a blessing to all peoples on earth. He made some big mistakes along the way, but “by faith Abraham . . . obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going” (HEBREWS 11:8).

This realization took a big burden off Janice’s heart. “I don’t have to worry about ‘succeeding’ at my job,” she told me later. “I just have to focus on trusting God to enable me to do the work.” As God provides the faith we need, may we trust Him with all our lives.

기쁜 감사드리기

심리학자 로버트 에몬스는 그의 연구에 참여한 사람들을 세 그룹으로 나누어 각각 주간 일지를 쓰게 했습니다. 한 그룹은 다섯 가지 감사한 일을 적게 하고, 또 한 그룹은 매일 겪는 짜증나는 일 다섯 가지를 적으라고 했습니다. 그리고 대조군 그룹 하나를 두어 이들에게는 평소에 겪는 소소한 일들을 기록하게 했습니다. 연구 결과에 따르면 감사를 기록한 그룹의 사람들이 자신의 삶 전반에 대해 좋게 느끼고, 미래에 대해 더 낙관적이며, 건강 문제도 상대적으로 적었다고 합니다.

감사를 드리면 삶을 바라보는 방식이 달라지게 됩니다. 감사하는 사람은 더 행복할 수 있습니다.

성경은 하나님께 감사할 때 누리는 유익을 언제나 강조하면서 우리에게 하나님의 성품에 대해 말해줍니다. 시편에서는 하나님의 백성에게 “여호와는 선하시니 그의 인자하심이 영원”(시편 100:5)하심에 감사드리며, 하나님의 인자하심과 인생에 행하신 기적으로 말미암아 주를 찬송하라고 거듭 말합니다 (시편 107:8, 15, 21, 31).

바울 사도가 자신을 도와준 빌립보 교회에 보낸 일종의 감사편지를 마무리하면서 그의 감사 기도를 “모든 지각에 뛰어난”(4:7) 하나님의 평강과 연결했습니다. 하나님과 그의 선하심에 초점을 맞출 때 우리는 어떤 상황에서도 근심하지 않고 ‘감사함으로’ 기도할 수 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 감사는 평강을 불러옵니다. 이 평강만이 우리 마음과 생각을 지켜주고 삶을 내다보는 방식도 바꾸어 줍니다. 마음에 가득 찬 감사는 기쁨의 영이 잘 자라게 해줍니다.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

A study by psychologist Robert Emmons divided volunteers into three groups that each made weekly entries in journals. One group wrote five things they were grateful for. One described five daily hassles. And a control group listed five events that had impacted them in a small way. The results of the study revealed that those in the gratitude group felt better about their lives overall, were more optimistic about the future, and reported fewer health problems.

Giving thanks has a way of changing the way we look at life. Thanksgiving can even make us happier.

The Bible has long extolled the benefits of giving thanks to God, as doing so reminds us of His character. The Psalms repeatedly call God’s people to give Him thanks because “the Lord is good and his love endures forever” (PSALM 100:5) and to thank Him for His unfailing love and wonderful deeds (107:8, 15, 21, 31).

As the apostle Paul closed his letter to the Philippians—the letter itself a kind of thank-you note to a church that had supported him—he linked thankful prayers with the peace of God “which transcends all understanding” (4:7). When we focus on God and His goodness, we find that we can pray without anxiety, in every situation, with thanksgiving. Giving thanks brings us a peace that uniquely guards our hearts and minds and changes the way we look at life. A heart full of gratitude nurtures a spirit of joy.

하나님 말씀의 능력

스티븐은 전도가 유망한 코미디언이었지만 방탕한 삶을 살고 있었습니다. 기독교 가정에서 자랐지만 아버지와 두 형제를 비행기 사고로 잃은 후 회의에 빠져 20대 초반에 신앙을 잃었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 밤 몹시 추웠던 시카고의 거리에서 신앙을 되찾았습니다. 낯선 사람이 건네준 포켓용 신약 성경을 받은 스티븐은 그 자리에서 열어보았습니다. 색인을 찾아보니 근심 걱정이 많은 사람은 예수님의 산상수훈 가운데서도 마태복음 6:27-34 말씀을 읽으라고 되어 있습니다.

그 구절을 펼치니 말씀이 불씨가 되어 스티븐의 마음을 비추었습니다. “그 순간 나에게 빛이 들어왔습니다. 그 추운 날 길모퉁이에 서서 산상 수훈을 읽은 나는 이제 과거의 내가 아니었습니다.”라고 그는 회상합니다.

이것이 성경의 능력입니다. 성경은 다른 책과 같지 않아서 생명력이 있습니다. 우리가 성경을 읽는 것이 아니라, 성경이 우리를 읽습니다. “좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영을 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단하나니”(히브리서 4:12).

THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD

Stephen was an up-and-coming comedian, and a prodigal. Raised in a Christian family, he struggled with doubt after his dad and two brothers died in a plane crash. By his early twenties, he’d lost his faith. But he found it one night on the frigid streets of Chicago. A stranger gave him a pocket New Testament, and Stephen cracked open the pages. An index said those struggling with anxiety should read Matthew 6:27–34, from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

Stephen turned there, and the words kindled a fire in his heart. He recalls, “I was absolutely, immediately lightened. I stood on the street corner in the cold and read the sermon, and my life has never been the same.”

Such is the power of Scripture. The Bible is unlike any other book, for it’s alive. We don’t just read the Bible. The Bible reads us. “Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit . . . ; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (HEBREWS 4:12).

Scripture presents the most powerful force on the planet, a force that transforms and leads us toward spiritual maturity. Let’s open it and read it out loud, asking God to ignite our hearts. He promises that the words He’s spoken “will not return to [Him] empty, but will accomplish what [He desires] and achieve the purpose for which [He] sent it” (ISAIAH 55:11). Our lives will never be the same.

하나님이 주시는 절제력

“마시멜로 실험”으로 알려진 1972년의 한 연구는 아이들의 욕구 충족을 뒤로 미룰 수 있는 능력을 측정하기 위해 개발되었습니다. 아이들에게 마시멜로 한 개를 먹으라고 주면서 10분 동안 먹지 않고 참으면 두 번째 마시멜로를 주겠다고 했습니다. 아이들의 약 삼분의 일은 더 큰 보상을 위해 버텼습니다. 다른 삼분의 일은 30초 안에 마시멜로를 먹어버렸습니다!

미래의 이익을 위해 기다리는 것이 더 유익하다는 것을 알면서도, 원하는 것이 목전에 있을 때 절제하기가 어려울 수 있습니다. 그러나 베드로는 절제를 포함하여 많은 중요한 덕목을 “우리 믿음에 더하라”고 하였습니다(베드로후서 1:5-6). 예수님을 믿는 믿음으로 베드로는 편지를 읽는 사람들과 우리에게 그 믿음의 증거로 선함, 지식, 절제, 인내, 경건, 애정에, 사랑을 “더하여” 계속 자라도록 격려했습니다(5-8절).

이러한 미덕들이 우리가 하나님의 은총을 얻거나 천국에 가게 하는 것은 아니지만, 이것들은 하나님께서 주시는 지혜와 능력을 가지고 우리 스스로를 통제해야 한다는 것을 우리 자신뿐만 아니라 우리 주위의 모든 사람들에게 보여줍니다. 그리고 무엇보다도 주님은 성령의 능력으로 주님이 기뻐하시는 “경건한 삶을 사는 데 필요한 모든 것을 우리에게 주셨습니다”(3절).

SELF-CONTROL IN GOD’S STRENGTH

A 1972 study known as the “marshmallow test” was developed to gauge children’s ability to delay gratification of their desires. The kids were each offered a single marshmallow to enjoy but were told if they could refrain from eating it for ten minutes, they’d be given a second one. About a third of the children were able to hold out for the larger reward. Another third gobbled it up within thirty seconds!

We might struggle to show self-control when offered something we desire, even if we know it would benefit us more in the future to wait. Yet Peter urged us to “add to [our] faith” many important virtues, including self-control (2 PETER 1:5–6). Having laid hold of faith in Jesus, Peter encouraged his readers, and us, to continue to grow in goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, affection, and love “in increasing measure” as evidence of that faith (VV. 5–8).

While these virtues don’t earn us God’s favor nor secure our place in heaven, they demonstrate—to ourselves as well as to all those with whom we interact—our need to exercise self-control as God provides the wisdom and strength to do so. And, best of all, He’s “given us everything we need [to live] a godly life,” one that pleases Him, through the power of the Holy Spirit (V. 3).

공중의 새를 보라

여름 해가 떠오르던 아침, 이웃 사람이 미소를 지으며 앞마당에 나와 있는 나에게 와서 보라고 속삭였습니다. “뭐예요?” 나도 흥미가 생겨 조용히 물었습니다. 그녀는 자기 집 앞 현관에 있는 풍경을 가리켰는데, 거기에는 금속 받침대 위에 지푸라기로 만든 작은 찻잔 모양 하나가 놓여 있었습니다. “벌새 둥지에요. 새끼들이 보이세요?” 그녀가 속삭였습니다. 위쪽을 향한 두 개의 부리는 바늘 끝만큼 작아서 거의 보이질 않았습니다. “어미 새를 기다리고 있어요.” 우리는 감탄하며 보고 있었습니다. 내가 사진을 찍으려고 핸드폰을 들자 “너무 가까이 가지는 말아요”라고 그 이웃이 말했습니다. “어미 새가 놀라 달아나면 안 돼요.” 우리는 그렇게 멀리 떨어져서 벌새 가족을 입양했습니다.

그러나 그것도 잠시였습니다. 한 주일 후 어미와 새끼 새들은 올 때처럼 조용히 사라졌습니다. 그러면 누가 이 새들을 돌볼까요?

이에 대해 성경은 영광스러우면서도 익숙한 답을 줍니다. 너무 익숙해서 그 안에 있는 약속들을 쉽게 잊어버릴 수도 있습니다. 예수님은 “네 목숨을 위하여 염려하지 말라”고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 6:25). 간단하지만 훌륭한 가르침입니다. 주님은 이어서 말씀하십니다. “공중의 새를 보라 심지도 않고 거두지도 않고 창고에 모아들이지도 아니하되 너희 하늘 아버지께서 기르시나니”(26절).

하나님께서는 작은 새들을 돌보시는 것처럼 우리의 몸과 마음과 정신과 영혼까지 돌보십니다. 그것은 놀라운 약속입니다. 걱정 없이 날마다 주님을 바라보며 높이 솟아오르기를 바랍니다.

BIRDS OF THE AIR

The summer sun was rising and my smiling neighbor, seeing me in my front yard, whispered for me to come look. “What?” I whispered back, intrigued. She pointed to a wind chime on her front porch, where a tiny teacup of straw rested atop a metal rung. “A hummingbird’s nest,” she whispered. “See the babies?” The two beaks, tiny as pinpricks, were barely visible as they pointed upward. “They’re waiting for the mother.” We stood there, marveling. I raised my cell phone to snap a picture. “Not too close,” my neighbor said. “Don’t want to scare away the mother.” And with that, we adopted—from afar—a family of hummingbirds.

But not for long. In another week, mother bird and babies were gone—as quietly as they had arrived. But who would care for them?

The Bible gives a glorious but familiar answer. It’s so familiar that we may forget all that it promises: “Do not worry about your life,” said Jesus (MATTHEW 6:25). A simple but beautiful instruction. “Look at the birds of the air,” He added. “They do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them” (V. 26).

Just as God cares for tiny birds, He cares for us—nurturing us in mind, body, soul, and spirit. It’s a magnificent promise. May we look to Him daily—without worry—and soar.
