약함이 강함 될 때

드류는 예수님을 섬긴 이유로 2년간 감옥에 있었습니다. 그는 선교사들이 투옥 중에도 늘 기뻐했다는 이야기를 읽었지만 자신은 그렇지 못했다고 고백했습니다. 그가 아내에게 하나님께서 고난을 감당할 사람을 잘못 택하신 것 같다고 털어놓자 아내는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “아니에요. 하나님께서는 꼭 맞는 사람을 택하셨어요. 우연히 택하신 것이 아니에요.”

드류는 예레미야 선지자와 비슷한 처지였던 것 같습니다. 예레미야는 유다가 그들의 죄악으로 하나님의 심판을 받을 것이라고 경고하며 하나님을 충실히 섬겼습니다. 하지만 하나님의 심판이 곧바로 임하지 않자 유다의 지도자들은 그를 매질하고 옥에 가두었습니다. 예레미야는 “주께서 저를 속이셨습니다”(7절, 현대인의 성경)라고 하나님을 원망하며 하나님이 약속을 안 지키셨다고 생각했습니다. 하나님의 말씀으로 그는 “종일토록 치욕과 모욕거리”가 되었습니다(8절). 예레미야는 말했습니다. “내 생일이 저주를 받았더라면”, “어찌하여 내가 태에서 나와서 고생과 슬픔을 보며 나의 날을 부끄러움으로 보내는고”(14, 18절).

마침내 드류는 석방되었습니다. 하지만 그는 그의 시련을 통해 하나님이 예레미야를 택하셨던 것처럼 어쩌면 자신도 약했기 때문에 하나님이 그를 택하셨다는 것을 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 드류와 예레미야가 본래 강한 사람들이었다면 성공의 일부는 자신의 공으로 돌아갔을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 본래 약한 자였기 때문에 인내의 모든 영광은 하나님께 돌아가는 것입니다 (고린도전서 1:26-31). 드류는 연약했기 때문에 예수님이 쓰기에 꼭 맞는 사람이 된 것입니다.

WHEN WEAKNESS IS STRENGTH

Drew had been imprisoned for two years because he served Jesus. He’d read stories of missionaries who felt constant joy throughout their incarceration, but he confessed this was not his experience. He told his wife that God had picked the wrong man to suffer for Him. She replied, “No. I think maybe He picked the right man. This was not an accident.”

Drew could likely relate to the prophet Jeremiah, who had faithfully served God by warning Judah that God would punish them for their sins. But God’s judgment hadn’t fallen yet, and Judah’s leaders beat Jeremiah and put him in stocks. Jeremiah blamed God: “You deceived me, Lord” (V. 7). The prophet believed God had failed to deliver. His word had only “brought [him] insult and reproach all day long” (V. 8). “Cursed be the day I was born!” Jeremiah said. “Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?” (VV. 14, 18).

Eventually Drew was released, but through his ordeal he began to understand that perhaps God chose him—much like He chose Jeremiah—because he was weak. If he and Jeremiah had been naturally strong, they might have received some of the praise for their success. But if they were naturally weak, all the glory for their perseverance would go to God (1 CORINTHIANS 1:26–31). His frailty made him the perfect person for Jesus to use.

복음을 위해

넬슨은 1916년에 그의 고향 버지니아에서 의과대학을 갓 졸업했습니다. 그해 말 그는 결혼 6개월 된 그의 신부와 함께 중국에 도착했습니다. 스물두 살의 나이에 그는 200만 명 이상의 중국인들이 살고 있는 지역의 유일한 병원인 ‘사랑과 자비 의료원’의 외과 의사가 되었습니다. 넬슨은 가족과 함께 그 지역에서 24년 넘게 거주하면서 병원을 운영하며 수술을 집도하고, 수 천명의 사람들에게 복음을 전했습니다. 한때 외국인을 불신하는 이들로부터 “외국 귀신”이라 불렸던 넬슨 벨은 훗날 “중국인을 사랑하는 벨”로 알려지게 되었습니다. 그의 딸 룻은 나중에 복음 전도자 빌리 그래함과 결혼했습니다.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL

The year was 1916 and Nelson had just graduated from medical school in his native Virginia. Later that year, he and his bride of six months arrived in China. At the age of twenty-two he became a surgeon at Love and Mercy Hospital, the only hospital in an area of at least two million Chinese residents. Nelson, together with his family, lived in the area for twenty-four more years, running the hospital, performing surgeries, and sharing the gospel with thousands of people. From once being called “foreign devil” by those who distrusted foreigners, Nelson Bell later became known as “The Bell Who Is Lover of the Chinese People.” His daughter Ruth was to later marry the evangelist Billy Graham.

Although Nelson was a brilliant surgeon and Bible teacher, it wasn’t his skills that drew many to Jesus, it was his character and the way he lived out the gospel. In Paul’s letter to Titus, the young gentile leader who was taking care of the church in Crete, the apostle said that living like Christ is crucial because it can make the gospel “attractive” (TITUS 2:10). Yet we don’t do this on our own strength. God’s grace helps us live “self-controlled, upright and godly lives” (V. 12), reflecting the truths of our faith (V. 1).

Many people around us still don’t know the good news of Christ, but they know us. May He help us reflect and reveal His message in attractive ways.

형제자매처럼

한 지도자가 내게 와서 캐런을 개인상담해줄 수 있는지 물었고 나는 수련회장 상담실에서 충혈된 눈에 눈물로 뺨이 젖어 있는 캐런을 만났습니다. 42세의 캐런은 결혼을 꿈꿔왔고, 현재 한 남자가 그녀에게
관심을 보이고 있었습니다. 그런데 캐런의 직장 상사인 그 남자는 이미 아내가 있는 사람이었습니다.

짓궂게 괴롭히는 오빠, 그리고 애정이 없는 아버지 곁에서 자란 캐런은 자신에게 접근하는 남자에게 쉽게 흔들리는 경향이 있다는 것을 일찍이 알고 있었습니다. 신앙을 재정비하며 삶의 기준도 새로 정해보았지만 그녀의 갈망은 여전했고 이룰 수 없는 그 사랑의 환상은 고통 그 자체였습니다.

상담을 마친 후 캐런과 나는 함께 고개를 숙였습니다. 솔직하고 힘 있는 기도 속에서 캐런은 잘못된 유혹을 고백하며 직장 상사를 만나지 않기로 선언하고, 그녀의 갈망을 하나님께 의탁했습니다. 그리고 홀가분한 마음으로 방을 나섰습니다.

그날 나는 믿음 안에서 서로를 형제자매로 대하라는 바울의 현명한 충고가 떠올랐습니다(디모데전서 5:1-2). 사람들을 바라보는 시선은 그들을 대하는 방식을 결정합니다. 이성을 쉽게 물건 취급하고 성적 대상으로 여기는 이 세상에서 상대방을 가족과 같이 바라본다면 그들을 배려하고 예의 있게 대하는 데 도움이 됩니다. 건강한 형제와 자매라면 서로를 학대하거나 잘못된 성적 유혹에 빠지지 않습니다.

캐런이 알았던 남자들은 모두 그녀를 비하하고 이용하고 무시했던 사람들뿐이었기에 그녀는 이제 남매처럼 이야기할 수 있는 누군가가 필요 했습니다. 복음으로 우리는 삶의 문제를 직면하는데 도움을 줄 새 형제자매를 만날 수 있습니다. 그것이 복음의 아름다움입니다.

SISTER TO BROTHER

When a leader asked if I’d speak with her privately, I found Karen in the retreat center counseling room red-eyed and wet-cheeked. Forty-two years old, Karen longed to be married, and a man was currently showing interest in her. But this man was her boss—and he already had a wife.

With a brother who cruelly teased her and a father devoid of affection, Karen discovered early that she was susceptible to men’s advances. A renewal of faith had given her new boundaries to live by, but her longing remained, and this glimpse of a love she couldn’t have was a torment.

After talking, Karen and I bowed our heads. And in a raw and powerful prayer, Karen confessed her temptation, declared her boss off-limits, handed her longing to God, and left the room feeling lighter.

That day, I realized the brilliance of Paul’s advice to treat each other as brothers and sisters in the faith (1 TIMOTHY 5:1–2). How we see people determines how we interact with them, and in a world quick to objectify and sexualize, viewing the opposite sex as family helps us treat them with care and propriety. Healthy brothers and sisters don’t abuse or seduce each other.

Having only known men who demeaned, used, or ignored her, Karen needed one she could talk with sister-to-brother. The beauty of the gospel is it provides just that—giving us new siblings to help us face life’s problems.

훈련생

‘훈련생’은 벤 말콤슨이 쓴 흥미로운 회고록의 제목입니다. 미식축구 경기 경험이 거의 없었던 그는 2007년도 로즈 볼 챔피언 남가주대학 미식축구팀에 선발된 선수가 아닌 ‘훈련생’으로 들어갔습니다. 대학의 기자였던 말콤슨은 자신이 직접 경험한 고된 선발 과정을 글로 쓰기로 했는데, 그는 놀랍게도 그토록 원했던 팀에서 한자리를 차지하게 되었습니다.

WALK ON

Walk On is the fascinating memoir of Ben Malcolmson, a student with virtually no football experience who became a “walk on”—a non-recruited player—for the 2007 University of Southern California Rose Bowl champion team. A college journalist, Malcolmson decided to write a first-person account of the grueling tryout process. To his disbelief, he won a coveted spot on the team.

After joining the team, Malcolmson’s faith compelled him to find God’s purpose for him in this unexpected opportunity. But his teammates’ indifference to discussions of faith left him discouraged. As he prayed for direction, Malcolmson read the powerful reminder in Isaiah where God says: “My word . . . will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (ISAIAH 55:11). Inspired by Isaiah’s words, Malcolmson anonymously gave every player on the team a Bible. Again, he was met with rejection. But years later, Malcolmson learned one player had read the Bible he’d been given—and shortly before his tragic death had demonstrated a relationship with and hunger for God, who he discovered in the pages of that Bible.

It’s likely that many of us have shared Jesus with a friend or family member, only to be met with indifference or outright rejection. But even when we don’t see results right away, God’s truth is powerful and will accomplish His purposes in His timing.

미리 아시는 하나님 신뢰하기

남편 댄은 운전하다가 낯선 곳으로 들어서면서 내비게이션의 안내가 갑자기 잘못된 것 같다고 생각했습니다. 평소 잘 알던 4차선 고속도로를 가던 중이었는데, 갑자기 출구로 빠져서 고속도로와 인접한 1차선 ‘지선’ 도로를 이용하라는 안내가 있었기 때문입니다. 별다른 교통 정체도 없었지만 댄은 “그래, 너를 믿을게.”라고 하며 고속도로를 빠져나왔습니다. 하지만 약 10마일 정도 지나자 고속도로 쪽에는 극심한 교통 정체가 생겼습니다. 대규모 도로 공사가 진행 중이었던 것이었습니다. 지선 도로 쪽은 어땠을 까요? 차량들이 별로 없어 우리는 무사히 목적지에 도달할 수 있었습니다. 댄이 말했습니다. “나는 앞을 볼 수 없었는데 내비게이션은 보고 있었네.” 같이 있던 우리도 “마치 하나님처럼”이라고 말하며 동감했습니다.

앞일을 알고 계신 하나님은 “유대인의 왕으로 나신”(마태복음 2:2) 예수님을 경배하기 위해 동방에서 온 현인들에게 길을 바꾸어 가라고 꿈을 통해 알려주셨습니다. 헤롯 왕은 자신의 “경쟁자” 왕의 탄생 소식을 듣고 불안하여 동방 박사들을 베들레헴으로 보내며 이렇게 거짓말을 했습니다. “가서 아기에 대하여 자세히 알아보고 찾거든 내게 고하여 나도 가서 그에게 경배하게 하라”(8절). 하지만 그들은 꿈에서 “헤롯에게로 돌아가지 말라”는 지시를 받고 “다른 길로 고국에 돌아갔습니다”(12절).

하나님은 우리의 발걸음도 인도해 주십니다. 인생이라는 고속도로를 여행할 때 우리는 그분께서 앞길을 알고 계심을 믿으며, 우리가 그분의 인도하심에 순종할 때 “[우리의] 길을 지도하시리라”(잠언 3:6)는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

TRUSTING GOD’S FORESIGHT

While driving us to an unfamiliar location, my husband noticed that the GPS directions suddenly seemed wrong. After entering a reliable four-lane highway, we were advised to exit and travel along a one-lane “frontage” road running parallel to us. “I’ll just trust it,” Dan said, despite seeing no delays. After about ten miles, however, the traffic on the highway next to us slowed to a near standstill. The trouble? Major construction. And the frontage road? With little traffic, it provided a clear path to our destination. “I couldn’t see ahead,” Dan said, “but the GPS could.” Or, as we agreed, “just like God can.”

Knowing what was ahead, God in a dream gave a similar change in directions to the wise men who’d come from the east to worship Jesus, “born king of the Jews” (MATTHEW 2:2). King Herod, disturbed
by the news of a “rival” king, lied to the magi, sending them to Bethlehem, saying: “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him” (V. 8). Warned in a dream “not to go back to Herod,” however, “they returned to their country by another route” (V. 12).

God will guide our steps too. As we travel life’s highways, we can trust that He sees ahead and remain confident that “he will make [our] paths straight” as we submit to His directions (PROVERBS 3:6).

칠면조 피하기

야생 칠면조 두 마리가 시골길 앞쪽에 서 있었습니다. ‘얼마나 가까이 그들에게 다가갈 수 있을까?’ 나는 궁금했습니다. 나는 달리는 속도를 늦추어 천천히 걷다가 멈추어 섰습니다. 그때까지는 괜찮았습니다. 그런데 칠면조가 나를 향해 걷기 시작하더니... 계속 다가왔습니다. 그리고 순식간에 내 허리를 쪼아 대고 내 뒤쪽도 쪼아댔습니다. ‘부리가 왜 이리 날카롭지?’ 나는 달아났습니다. 칠면조는 내 뒤를 뒤뚱뒤뚱 쫓아오다가 결국 쫓는 것을 포기했습니다.

얼마나 순식간에 벌어진 반전이었는지요! 칠면조가 주도권을 잡아 사냥감에서 사냥꾼으로 변했던 것입니다. 어리석게도 나는 그들이 지능이 너무 낮아서 무서워하지 않아도 될 거라고 여겼었습니다. 나는 어처구니없이 새에게 공격당해 다칠 생각은 없었기에 결국 도망치고 말았습니다. 칠면조에게서 말입니다.

골리앗은 다윗이 위험해 보이지 않았기에 그를 조롱하여 가까이 오라고 하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “내게로 오라 그러면 내가 네 살을 공중의 새들과 들짐승들에게 주리라”(사무엘상 17:44). 하지만 상황이 반전되어 다윗이 주도권을 쥐게 되었습니다. 다윗이 골리앗을 향해 달려갈 수 있었던 것은 그가 어리석었기 때문이 아니라 하나님을 신뢰했기 때문이었습니다. 다윗은 “오늘... 온 땅으로 이스라엘에 하나님이 계신 줄 알게 하겠다”(46절)고 소리쳤습니다. 골리앗은 이 기세당당한 소년을 보고 당황했습니다. ‘도대체 무슨 일이지?’ 그는 분명 그렇게 생각했을 것입니다. 그 순간 골리앗의 두 눈 사이로 돌이 날아와 그를 쳤습니다.

작은 동물들이 사람이나 양치기 개처럼 자신보다 큰 대상으로부터 도망치는 것은 자연스러운 일입니다. 우리가 삶의 문제를 피해 숨는 것도 자연스럽습니다. ‘하지만 왜 본능에만 안주하고 있습니까?’ 이스라엘에는 하나님이 계시지 않나요? 그렇다면 그분의 능력을 힘입어 전쟁터로 달려가십시오.

FLEEING FROM TURKEYS

Two wild turkeys stood in the country lane ahead. How close could I get? I wondered. I slowed my jog to a walk, then stopped. It worked. The turkeys walked toward me . . . and kept coming. In seconds, their heads were bobbing at my waist, then behind me. How sharp were those beaks? I ran away. They waddled after me before giving up the chase.

How quickly the tables had turned! The hunted had become the hunter when the turkeys seized the initiative. Foolishly, I had wondered if they were too dumb to be scared. I wasn’t about to be carelessly wounded by a bird, so I fled. From turkeys.

David didn’t seem dangerous, so Goliath taunted him to come near. “ ‘Come here,’ he said, ‘and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!’ ” (1 SAMUEL 17:44). David flipped the script when he seized the initiative. He ran toward Goliath, not because he was foolish but because he had confidence in God. He shouted, “This very day . . . the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel” (V. 46). Goliath was puzzled by this aggressive boy. What’s going on? he must have thought. Then it hit him. Right between the eyes.

It’s natural for small animals to run from people and shepherds to avoid giants. It’s natural for us to hide from our problems. Why settle for natural? Is there a God in Israel? Then, in His power, run toward the fight.

진정한 변화

난폭한 가정에서 성장한 남부 런던 출신의 클라우드는 15살에 마리화나를 팔기 시작했고 25살에는 헤로인을 팔았습니다. 그는 자신의 범죄 행위를 가리려고 청소년 멘토로서 활동하기 시작했습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 그는 예수님을 믿는 그의 매니저에게 호기심을 느끼고 신앙에 대해 더 알고 싶어졌습니다. 그는 기독교인의 믿음에 대해 공부하는 모임에 참석한 후 “용기를 내어” 예수님을 그의 삶 속에 모셔 들였습니다. 그는 말했습니다. “나는 나를 환영하는 어떤 존재를 느꼈습니다. 사람들은 내가 변화된 것을 즉시 알아보았습니다. 나는 세상에서 가장 행복한 마약상이었습니다!”

바울 사도도 에베소 교회에 보낸 편지에 이와 같은 변화를 언급했습니다. 그는 하나님과 분리된 삶을 살지 말 것을 요구하면서, “너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고” 그 대신 “하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라”(에베소서 4:22, 24)고 권면했습니다. 바울이 사용했던 동사의 형태는 우리가 규칙적으로 새 사람을 입어야 한다는 것을 의미합니다.

성령님은 우리가 클라우드처럼 새사람으로 변화되어 살면서 예수님을 더욱 닮아갈 수 있도록 도와주시기를 기뻐하십니다.

TRUE CHANGE

Raised in a turbulent home in South London, Claud started selling marijuana at fifteen and heroin when he was twentyfive. Needing a cover for his activities, he became a mentor to young people. Soon he became intrigued by his manager, a believer in Jesus, and wanted to know more. After attending a course exploring the Christian faith, he “dared” Christ to come into his life. “I felt such a welcoming presence,” he said. “People saw a change in me instantly. I was the happiest drug dealer in the world!”

Jesus didn’t stop there. When Claud weighed up a bag of cocaine the next day, he thought, This is madness. I’m poisoning people! He realized he must stop selling drugs and get a job. With the help of the Holy Spirit, he turned off his phones and never went back.

This kind of change is what the apostle Paul referenced when he wrote to the church at Ephesus. Calling the people not to live separated from God, he urged them to “put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires” and instead to “put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (EPHESIANS 4:22, 24). The verb form Paul used implies that we’re to put on the new self regularly.

As with Claud, the Holy Spirit delights to help us to live out of our new selves and become more like Jesus.

분노의 마음

파블로 피카소의 작품 중 정치적 메시지가 담긴 가장 중요한 그림인 ‘게르니카’는 1937년 당시 스페인의 소도시 게르니카에 있었던 폭격을 모더니즘적으로 묘사한 작품입니다. 제2차 세계대전 발발로 이어진 스페인 혁명 동안 스페인 민족주의 세력은 나치 독일군에게 게르니카를 비행기 폭격 훈련 장소로 쓸 수 있도록 허락했습니다. 논란 속에 행해진 폭격 훈련으로 많은 인명 피해가 발생했고 민간인을 표적으로 삼은 비윤리적인 행위에 전 세계의 이목이 집중되었습니다. 피카소의 그림은 세계 사람들의 상상력을 사로잡았고, 서로를 파괴하는 인류의 능력에 대한 논쟁을 촉발시켰습니다.

우리가 절대 고의적으로 피를 부르지는 않을 것이라고 자신하는 사람들은 예수님의 다음 말씀을 명심해야 합니다. “옛 사람에게 말한 바 살인하지 말라 누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 나는 너희에게 이르노니 형제에게 노하는 자마다 심판을 받게 되고”(마태복음 5:21-22). 실제 살인을 저지르지 않고도 마음으로 살인할 수 있습니다.

다른 사람들을 향한 참을 수 없는 분노가 우리를 삼키려 할 때, 우리는 간절하게 성령께서 우리의 마음을 채우고 다스리게 하심으로 인간의 본능이 성령의 열매로 대체될 수 있게 해야 합니다(갈라디아서 5:19-23). 그럴 때 사랑과 기쁨, 그리고 평안이 우리의 관계 속에 자리 잡게 됩니다.

HEART OF ANGER

Guernica, Pablo Picasso’s most important political painting, was a modernist portrayal of the 1937 destruction of a small Spanish town by that name. During the Spanish revolution and the ramp-up to World War II, Nazi Germany’s planes were permitted by Spain’s Nationalist forces to use the town for bombing practice. These controversial bombings took scores of lives, drawing the attention of a global community concerned over the immorality of bombing civilian targets. Picasso’s painting captured the imaginations of the watching world and became a catalyst for debate about humanity’s capacity to destroy one another.

For those of us who feel confident that we would never intentionally shed blood, we should remember Jesus’ words, “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment” (MATTHEW 5:21–22). The heart can be murderous without ever actually committing murder.

When unchecked anger toward others threatens to consume us, we desperately need the Holy Spirit to fill and control our hearts so that our human tendencies can be replaced by the fruit of the Spirit (GALATIANS 5:19–23). Then, love, joy, and peace can mark our relationships.

긍휼의 마음 갖기

한 TV 방송에서 눈에 관련된 가벼운 불상사들을 모아 5분짜리 영상으로 제작하여 방영했습니다. 지붕에서 스키를 타는 모습, 튜브를 타다가 부딪치는 모습, 얼음 위에서 미끄러지는 모습 등을 담은 영상에 스튜디오 안의 관객들과 TV 시청자들은 웃음과 환호를 터트렸습니다. 특히 본인들의 실수로 인해 우스꽝스러운 모습을 보여준 사람들의 영상이 더 큰 웃음을 자아냈습니다.

재미있는 영상을 보는 것이 나쁜 것은 아니지만 한 가지 우리를 일깨워주는 부분이 있습니다. 그것은 우리가 다른 이들의 어려움을 이용하거나 웃음거리로 삼을 수 있다는 것입니다. 서로 경쟁 국가인 이스라엘과 에돔에 관해 그런 이야기가 오바댜서에 기록되어 있습니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘의 죄로 그들을 벌하는 것이 당연하다고 여기자 에돔이 기뻐했습니다. 에돔은 그 상황을 악용하여 이스라엘 도시들을 약탈하고, 그들의 탈출을 방해하며, 그들의 적들을 지원했습니다(오바댜 1:13-14). 그러자 오바댜 선지자에게 에돔을 향한 경고의 말씀이 임했습니다. “여호와께서 만국을 벌할 날이 가까웠나니” “네가 형제의 날 곧 그 재앙의 날에 방관할 것이 아니며”(12, 15절).

CHOOSING COMPASSION

A five-minute montage of snow-related mishaps was the central piece to one episode of a TV show. Home videos of people skiing off rooftops, crashing into objects while tubing, and slipping on ice brought laughter and applause from the studio audience and people watching at home. The laughter seemed to be loudest when it appeared that the people who wiped out deserved it because of their own foolish behavior.

Funny home videos aren’t a bad thing, but they can reveal something about ourselves: we can be prone to laugh at or take advantage of the hardships of others. One such story is recorded in Obadiah about two rival nations, Israel and Edom. When God saw fit to punish Israel for their sin, Edom rejoiced. They took advantage of the Israelites, looted their cities, thwarted their escape, and supported their enemies (OBADIAH 1:13–14). A word of warning came through the prophet Obadiah to Edom: “You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune,” for “the day of the Lord is near for all nations” (VV. 12, 15).

When we see the challenges or suffering of others, even if it seems they’ve brought it upon themselves, we must choose compassion over pride. We’re not in a position to judge others. Only God can do that. The kingdom of this world belongs to Him (V. 21)—He alone holds the power of justice and mercy.

섬세하신 하나님

케빈과 킴벌리에게는 아주 힘든 한 주간이었습니다. 케빈의 발작 증세가 갑자기 심해져 병원에 입원하게 되었던 것입니다. 입양한 네 자녀는 팬데믹 속에서 집에만 있다 보니 짜증이 극도로 심해졌습니다. 게다가 냉장고의 음식도 떨어져 킴벌리는 식사 준비를 할 수가 없었습니다. 그 와중에 킴벌리는 뜬금없이 당근이 먹고 싶었습니다.

한 시간 후 누군가가 현관문을 두드렸습니다. 친구 아만다와 앤디가 한 가족이 모두 먹을 양의 음식을 들고 문 앞에 서 있었는데, 그 안에는 ‘당근’ 도 있었습니다.

‘악마도 이렇게 섬세할 수 있을까요?’ 아닙니다. 유대 민족의 역사에서 섬세하신 하나님의 모습을 보여주는 한 놀라운 이야기가 있습니다. 애굽 왕 바로는 “아들이 태어나거든 너희는 그를 나일 강에 던지라”(출애굽기 1:22) 고 명령했습니다. 이 대량학살 사건은 놀랍도록 섬세하게 전개되었습니다. 모세의 어머니는 비록 계획에 의한 것이기는 했어도 실제로 아들을 나일강에 “던졌습니다.” 그리고 장차 하나님께서 그의 백성을 구할 자로 택하신 그 아기는 바로의 딸에 의해 나일강에서 구출됩니다. 바로의 딸은 모세의 어머니를 데려와 삯을 주며 아기에게 젖을 먹이기까지 했습니다!(2:9).

이렇게 생겨난 유대 민족으로부터 훗날 약속된 아기가 탄생하게 됩니다. 그분의 이야기는 놀랍도록 섬세하고 인간이 알 수 없는 아이러니들로 가득합니다. 그러나 무엇보다 중요한 것은 예수님께서 우리를 죄의 노예 상태에서 해방시켜 주신다는 것입니다.

고난의 때에 특히 하나님은 섬세한 모습을 보여주십니다. 킴벌리는 분명 “하나님께서 당근을 보내주셨어요!”라고 말했을 것입니다.

GOD IN THE DETAILS

It had been an awful week for Kevin and Kimberley. Kevin’s seizures had suddenly worsened, and he’d been hospitalized. Amid the pandemic, their four young children—siblings adopted from foster care—were taking cabin fever to a new extreme. On top of that, Kimberley couldn’t scrounge up a decent meal from the fridge. Oddly, at that moment, she craved carrots.

An hour later, there was a knock at the door. There stood their friends Amanda and Andy with an entire meal she’d prepared for the family. Including carrots.

They say the devil is in the details? No. An amazing story in the history of the Jewish people shows God is in the details. Pharaoh had commanded, “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile” (EXODUS 1:22). That genocidal development turned on a remarkable detail. Moses’ mother did indeed “throw” her baby into the Nile, albeit with a strategy. And from the Nile, Pharaoh’s own daughter would rescue the baby whom God used to rescue His people. She would even pay Moses’ mother to nurse him! (2:9).

One day from this fledgling Jewish nation would come a promised baby boy. His story would abound with amazing details and divine ironies. Most importantly, Jesus would provide an exodus out of our slavery to sin.

Even—especially—in the dark times, God is in the details. As Kimberley will tell you, “God brought me carrots!”
