계획과 섭리

2000년에 영화 대여 우편 시스템을 운영하던 한 신생 회사는 당시 영화와 비디오게임 대여 시장을 장악했던 블록버스터에게 5천만 달러에 회사를 매각하겠다고 제안했습니다. 당시 넷플릭스의 가입자는 약 30만 명이었고, 블록버스터는 수백만 명의 가입자를 보유하고 있었습니다. 하지만 블록버스터는 그 작은 경쟁사를 사들일 기회를 그냥 흘려버렸습니다. 결과는 어떻게 되었을까요? 오늘날 넷플릭스는 가입자가 1억 8천만 명 이상 되고 그 가치가 거의 2천억 달러에 이르지만, 블록버스터는 빈털터리가 되고 말았습니다. 미래를 예측할 수 있는 사람은 아무도 없습니다.

우리는 자신의 삶을 통제하고 있으며 미래에 대한 계획도 성공할 거라고 믿고 싶어 하지만, 야고보는 “너희는 잠깐 보이다가 없어지는 안개”(4:14)라고 말합니다. 인생은 우리가 흔히 아는 것보다 짧고 빠르며 더 연약합니다. 계획을 세우는 것은 필요하지만 우리에게 통제권이 있다고 가정하는 것은 섣부른 판단입니다. “그러한 자랑은 다 악한 것”이기 때문에 야고보가 “[우리의] 허탄한 자랑”을 하지 말라고 경고하고 있는 것입니다(16절).

이 악한 행실을 피하는 방법은 감사하는 마음으로 하나님의 일에 참여하는 것입니다. 감사할 때 우리는 온갖 “좋은 은사와 온전한 선물”(1:17) 의 원천이 주님이라는 사실을 잊지 않게 됩니다. 그렇게 되면 우리가 하나님께 나아갈 때 단지 현재와 미래의 우리 계획만 축복해 달라고 간구하지 않고 우리도 하나님께서 하시는 일에 동참하게 해달라고 간구하게 됩니다. “주의 뜻이면”(4:15)이라고 기도하는 것은 바로 이런 의미입니다.

PLANS AND PROVIDENCE

In 2000, an upstart company operating on a movie-rental-bymail system offered to sell their company for $50 million to Blockbuster, the home movies and video game rentals king at that time. Netflix had roughly 300,000 subscribers, while Blockbuster had millions and millions of them. Blockbuster passed on the opportunity to purchase their little competitor. The result? Today Netflix has more than 180 million subscribers and is worth nearly $200 billion. As for Blockbuster, well . . . it went bust. None of us can predict the future.

We’re tempted to believe that we’re in control of our lives and that our plans for the future will succeed. But James says, “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (4:14). Life is brief, quick, and more fragile than we often realize. Planning is necessary, but the sin of presumption is in the assumption that we’re in control. That’s why James warns us not to “boast in [our] arrogant schemes,” for “all such boasting is evil” (V. 16).

The way to avoid this sinful practice is through grateful participation with God. Gratitude reminds us that He’s the source of every “good and perfect gift” (1:17). Then when we come to God, we ask Him not to simply bless our present and future plans but to help us join Him in what He’s doing. This is what it means to pray, “If it is the Lord’s will” (4:15).

그냥 구하라!

환희에 찬 고함소리가 지하실에 있는 아내 셜리에게서 터져 나왔습니다. 몇 시간 동안 뉴스레터 과제를 붙들고 있던 아내는 거의 마무리 단계에 있었지만 어떻게 끝내야 할지 모르는 불안감과 불확실 속에서 하나님께 도와달라고 기도했습니다. 그녀는 페이스북을 통해 친구들에게도 도움을 요청했는데, 얼마 안 되어 과제는 팀워크에 의해 완료되었습니다.

뉴스레터 과제는 인생에서 작은 일이지만, 작은(그리고 그렇게 작지 않은) 일들이 걱정이나 불안을 가져올 수 있습니다. 처음 자녀를 양육하는 부모나 새로운 학업의 어려움에 직면한 학생, 사랑하는 사람을 잃고 슬퍼하는 사람, 가정이나 직장, 사역에서 어려움을 겪는 사람 등, 우리는 하나님께 도움을 구하지 않기 때문에 불필요하게 걱정할 때가 있습니다(야고보서 4:2).

바울은 당시의 빌립보 성도들에게, 그리고 우리들에게 도움이 필요할 때 우선적으로 무엇을 해야 할지 가르쳐주었습니다. “아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라” (빌립보서 4:6). 삶이 복잡해질 때 우리는 찬송가 “죄짐 맡은 우리 구주”에 나오는 이 가사를 기억할 필요가 있습니다. “주께 고함 없는 고로 복을 얻지 못하네 사람들이 어찌하여 아뢸 줄을 모를까.”

그리고 하나님께 도움을 구할 때 하나님은 어쩌면 우리를 도와줄 수 있는 사람들에게 우리를 인도해 주실지도 모릅니다.

JUST ASK!

The gleeful shouts arising from our basement came from my wife, Shirley. For hours she’d wrestled with a newsletter project, and she was ready to be done with it. In her anxiety and uncertainty about how to move forward, she prayed for God’s help. She also reached out to Facebook friends and soon the project was completed—a team effort.

While a newsletter project is a little thing in life, small (and not so small) things can bring about worry or anxiousness. Perhaps you’re a parent walking through the stages of childrearing for the first time; a student facing newfound academic challenges; a person grieving the loss of a loved one; or someone experiencing a home, work, or ministry challenge. Sometimes we’re needlessly on edge because we don’t ask God for help (JAMES 4:2).

Paul pointed the followers of Jesus in Philippi and us to our first line of defense in times of need: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (PHILIPPIANS 4:6). When life gets complicated, we need reminders like the one from the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”: “Oh what peace we often forfeit, / oh what needless pain we bear, / all because we do not carry, / everything to God in prayer.”

And perhaps in our asking God for help, He’ll lead us to ask people who can assist us.

도움이 필요할 때

월요일 아침이었지만 친구 치아밍은 사무실에 나오지 않았습니다. 그는 집에서 욕실을 청소하고 있었습니다. 그는 한 달 동안 실직 상태였는데, 앞으로도 직장을 구하지 못할 거라고 생각했습니다. 코로나바이러스 감염증 대유행으로 그의 회사가 문을 닫았기 때문에 치아밍은 미래에 대한 염려로 두려움에 사로잡혀 있습니다. ‘가족을 부양해야 하는데 어디에 가서 도움을 받을 수 있을까?’

그러나 우리는 천지를 지으신 분이 친히 우리를 돕는다는 사실에 용기를 낼 수 있습니다(2절). 하나님은 우리의 삶을 지키시고(3,5,7-8절) 또 우리에게 무엇이 필요한지 알고 계십니다. “지키다”라는 말의 히브리어 ‘샤마르’는 “보호하다”라는 뜻입니다. 우주의 창조주이신 하나님은 우리의 보호자이십니다. 우리는 그분의 보호 아래 있습니다. “하나님께서 저와 제 가족을 돌보아 주셨습니다. 그리고 제때에 교사직을 갖게 해주셨습니다.”라고 치아밍이 얼마 전에 간증했습니다.

우리가 하나님을 믿고 순종할 때, 하나님의 지혜와 사랑의 보호 안에 있다는 사실을 알고 희망을 가지고 앞을 내다볼 수 있습니다.

WHEN YOU NEED HELP

It was a Monday morning, but my friend Chia-ming wasn’t in the office. He was at home, cleaning the bathroom. A month unemployed, he thought, and no job leads. His firm had shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic and worries about the future filled Chia-ming with fear. I need to support my family, he thought. Where can I go for help?

In Psalm 121:1, the pilgrims to Jerusalem asked a similar question about where to find help. The journey to the Holy City on Mount Zion was long and potentially dangerous, with travelers enduring an arduous climb. The challenges they faced may seem like the difficult journeys we face in life today—trudging the path of illness, relationship problems, bereavement, stress at work or, as in the case of Chia-ming, financial difficulty and unemployment.

But we can take heart in the truth that the Maker of heaven and earth Himself helps us (V. 2). He watches over our lives (VV. 3, 5, 7–8) and He knows what we need. Shamar, the Hebrew word for “watches over,” means “to guard.” The Creator of the universe is our guardian. We’re in His safekeeping. “God took care of me and my family,” Chia-ming shared recently. “And at the right time, He provided a teaching job.”

As we trust and obey God, we can look ahead with hope, knowing we’re within the protective boundaries of His wisdom and love.

영양류의 일종인 임팔라는 높이 10피트(3미터), 길이 30피트(9미터)까지 뛸 수 있습니다. 그것은 굉장한 재주이며 아프리카 야생에서 생존하는 데에 꼭 필요한 것임에 틀림없습니다. 그러나 동물원에서 울타리 안에 갇혀 있는 많은 임팔라들은 높이가 3피트(90센티미터)에 불과한 벽 안에 그대로 머물러 있습니다. 어떻게 그렇게 낮은 벽으로 이 운동력이 왕성한 동물을 가둘 수 있을까요? 임팔라는 자기가 착지할 곳이 보이지 않으면 아예 뛰질 않기 때문입니다. 반대편에 무엇이 있는지 볼 수 없어서 울타리 안에 그대로 갇혀 사는 것입니다.

우리 인간도 이와 별로 다르지 않습니다. 우리는 앞으로 나아가기 전에 상황의 결과를 먼저 알고 싶어 합니다. 그러나 믿음의 삶은 그렇게 되는 경우가 거의 없습니다. 바울은 고린도교회에 보낸 편지에서 “우리는 믿음으로 살아가지, 보는 것으로 살아가지 아니합니다”(고린도후서 5:7, 새번역)라고 일깨워주었습니다.

예수님은 우리에게 “뜻이 하늘에서 이루어진 것같이 땅에서도 이루어 지이다”(마태복음 6:10)라고 기도하라고 가르치셨습니다. 그러나 그것은 주님이 이루실 것을 우리가 미리 알 수 있다는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 믿음으로 산다는 것은 주님의 선한 목적이 신비에 가려져 있을 때에도 그 목적을 신뢰하는 것을 의미합니다.

LANDING SPOT

The impala, a member of the antelope family, is able to jump up to ten feet high and thirty feet in length. It’s an incredible feat, and no doubt essential to its survival in the African wild. Yet, at many impala enclosures found in zoos, you’ll find that the animals are kept in place by a wall that’s merely three feet tall. How can such a low wall contain these athletic animals? It works because impalas will never jump unless they can see where they’ll land. The wall keeps the impalas inside the enclosure because they can’t see what’s on the other side.

As humans, we’re not all that different. We want to know the outcome of a situation before we move forward. The life of faith, however, rarely works that way. Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul reminded them, “We live by faith, not by sight” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:7).

Jesus taught us to pray, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:10). But that doesn’t mean we’ll know His outcomes beforehand. Living by faith means trusting His good purposes even when those purposes are shrouded in mystery.

In the midst of life’s uncertainties, we can trust His unfailing love. No matter what life throws at us, “we make it our goal to please him” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:9).

다양한 곡을 부르는 2인조 포크송 그룹 ‘오버 더 라인’의 가수 겸 작곡가 린포드 데트와일러는 이렇게 말합니다. “젊은 예능인이 물을 수 있는 질문은 다양한데, 그중 하나가 ‘내가 유명해지려면 어떻게 해야 하나요?’라는 것입니다.” 데트와일러는 그 같은 목표는 “자신의 안팎으로 온갖 파괴적인 것들이 드나들게 문을 활짝 여는 것”이라고 경고합니다. 그 대신 그와 그의 아내는 “평생에 걸쳐 계속 성장하는” 화려하지 않은 음악의 길을 선택했습니다.

여호야다라는 이름은 우리에게 익숙하지는 않지만 평생 하나님께 헌신한 사람을 상징하는 이름입니다. 요아스 왕의 통치 기간 동안 여호야다는 제사장으로 섬겼는데 그 덕분에 왕은 재임 중 대부분을 잘 다스릴 수 있었습니다.

THE COURSE OF A LIFETIME

“There are different questions a young artist can ask,” says singer-songwriter Linford Detweiler of eclectic folk duo Over the Rhine. “One is, ‘What must I do to be famous?’ ” Detweiler warns that such a goal “swings the door open to all manner of destructive forces from both within and without.” He and his wife have instead chosen a less flashy musical road in which they “continue to grow over the course of an entire lifetime.”

The name Jehoiada isn’t readily recognized, yet it’s synonymous with a lifetime of dedication to God. He served as priest during the reign of King Joash, who for the most part ruled well—thanks to Jehoiada.

When Joash was just seven years old, Jehoiada had been the catalyst in installing him as rightful king (2 KINGS 11:1–16). But this was no power grab. At Joash’s coronation, Jehoiada “made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord’s people” (V. 17). He kept his word, implementing badly needed reforms. “As long as Jehoiada lived, burnt offerings were presented continually in the temple of the Lord” (2 CHRONICLES 24:14). For his dedication, Jehoiada “was buried with the kings in the City of David” (V. 16).

Eugene Peterson calls such a God-focused life “a long obedience in the same direction.” Ironically, it’s such obedience that stands out in a world bent on fame, power, and self-fulfillment.

진리를 전달하기

코로나바이러스 감염증 대유행 기간 동안 감염 위험 때문에 손주들을 직접 볼 수 없었던 많은 조부모들은 아이들과 소통할 수 있는 새로운 방법들을 모색했습니다. 최근 조사에 따르면 많은 조부모들이 손주들과 계속 가깝게 지내려고 문자 메시지와 소셜 미디어를 사용한 것으로 나타났습니다. 어떤 사람들은 화상으로 떨어져 있는 가족과 함께 예배를 드리기도 했습니다.

부모와 조부모가 자녀에게 선한 영향을 끼칠 수 있는 가장 훌륭한 방법의 하나는 성경의 진리를 전해주는 것입니다. 신명기 4장에서 모세는 하나님의 백성들에게 “네가 눈으로 본 그 일을 잊어버리지 말라... 그 일들이 네 마음에서 떠나지 않도록 조심하라”(9절)고 명했습니다. 이어서 이것들을 자녀와 손주들과 함께 나누면 그들도 하나님을 “경외”하고(10절) 하나님께서 그들에게 주신 땅에서 하나님의 진리에 따라 살 수 있게 될 거라고 말했습니다.

TRANSMITTING TRUTH

Without the ability to see their grandchildren in person due to risk of infection, many grandparents sought new ways of connecting during the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent survey showed that many grandparents adopted texting and social media as a means to maintain their precious bond with their grandchildren. Some even worshiped with their extended families by video call.

One of the most wonderful ways parents and grandparents can influence their children is by passing down the truths of Scripture. In Deuteronomy 4, Moses charged God’s people to “not forget the things” they’d seen about God “or let them fade from [their] heart[s]” (V. 9). He went on to say that sharing these things with their children and their children’s children would enable them to learn to “revere” Him (V. 10) and to live according to His truth in the land He was giving them.

The relationships God gives us with our families and friends are certainly meant to be enjoyed. By God’s design, they’re also intended to be a conduit to convey His wisdom from one generation to another, “training [them] in righteousness” and equipping them for “every good work” (2 TIMOTHY 3:16–17). When we share God’s truth and work in our lives with the next generation—whether by text, call, video, or in-person conversation—we equip them to see and enjoy His work in their own lives.

예수님은 천국의 삶의 가치에 대해 가르치기를 마치면서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는 자는 그 집을 반석 위에 지은 지혜로운 사람 같다”(마태복음 7:24). 거센 바람이 불어도 그 집은 견뎌냈습니다. 이와 반대로 듣고도 순종하지 않는 사람은 “그 집을 모래 위에 지은 어리석은 사람 같습니다”(26절). 거센 바람이 불자 그 집은 강한 폭풍을 견디지 못하고 무너졌습니다. 예수님은 듣는 사람들에게 그들의 삶을 예수님께 순종하는 견고한 기초 위에 세우거나, 아니면 그들 자신의 방식으로 사는 불안정한 모래 위에 세우는 두 가지 선택이 있다고 하셨습니다.

우리도 선택을 해야 합니다. 삶의 터를 예수님과 그분의 말씀에 순종하는 데에 두겠습니까, 아니면 그분의 말씀에 불순종하며 살겠습니까? 성령님의 도우심으로 우리는 그리스도 위에 우리의 삶을 세우는 선택을 할 수 있습니다.

TWO HOUSES

To test the stability of two houses, engineers simulated a Category 3 hurricane by using powerful fans that produced wind gusts of one hundred mph for ten minutes. The first house was built according to a non-hurricane building code, and the other was put together with a reinforced roof and floors. The first house shook and eventually collapsed, but the second house survived with only a few cosmetic damages. One of the engineers summarized the study by asking, “Which house would you rather be living in?”

Concluding His teaching on values of kingdom living, Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (MATTHEW 7:24). The fierce winds blew, but the house survived. In contrast, the person who hears and yet doesn’t obey, “is like a foolish man who built his house on sand” (V. 26). The fierce winds blew, and the house collapsed under the intensity of the storm. Jesus presented His audience with two options: build your lives on the solid foundation of obedience to Him or on the unstable sand of your own ways.

We too have to make a choice. Will we build our lives on Jesus and obedience to His words or disobedience to His instruction? By the Holy Spirit’s help, we can choose to build our lives on Christ.

빛나는 방랑자

2020년 봄 밤하늘 아래 서퍼들이 샌디에이고의 해안을 따라 생명체에 의해 빛을 발하는 파도를 탔습니다. 이 빛의 향연은 식물성플랑크톤이라고 불리는 미세한 유기체들에 의해 발생 되었는데, 그 이름은 “방랑자” 또는 “떠돌이”를 의미하는 그리스 단어에서 유래된 것입니다. 낮 동안에 살아 있는 아주 작은 생명체들이 적조를 만들고 햇빛을 포집하여 그것을 화학 에너지로 바꾸었다가 어두울 때 파도가 생기면서 방해를 받으면 파란 빛을 만들어냅니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들도 적조류처럼 땅 위에서 방랑자나 떠돌이처럼 사는 천국 시민들입니다. 그러다가 잘 짜인 우리의 계획이 어려운 상황으로 방해받게 되면 성령님은 우리에게 세상의 빛이신 예수님처럼 반응할 수 있도록 능력 주셔서 어둠 속에서도 주님의 빛나는 성품을 발하게 하십니다. 바울 사도는 그리스도와 친밀한 것과, 그를 믿는 믿음에서 나오는 의보다 더 소중한 것은 없다고 말합니다(빌립보서 3:8-9). 바울은 예수님을 알고 그의 부활의 능력을 알게 되면 우리가 변화되며, 시련이 우리 삶을 거스를 때에 우리의 사는 모습과 대응하는 방법도 달라진다는 사실을 그의 삶으로 보여주었습니다(10-16절).

날마다 하나님의 아들 예수님과 함께 시간을 보내면 성령님이 우리에게 필요한 진리로 채우셔서, 우리가 이 땅에서의 모든 도전에 직면할 때 그리스도의 성품을 보여줄 수 있게 하십니다(17-21절). 하나님께서 우리를 본향으로 부르시거나 아니면 다시 오시는 그날까지, 우리는 어둠을 가르는 하나님의 사랑과 소망의 등불이 될 수 있습니다.

RADIANT DRIFTERS

Under the night sky in the spring of 2020, surfers rode bioluminescent waves along the coast of San Diego. These lightshows were caused by microscopic organisms called phytoplankton, a name derived from a Greek word meaning “wanderer” or “drifter.” During the day, the living organisms create red tides and capture sunlight that converts into chemical energy. When disturbed in the darkness, they produce an electric blue light.

Believers in Jesus are citizens of heaven who, much like the red-tide algae, live like wanderers or drifters on earth. When difficult circumstances disturb our well-laid plans, the Holy Spirit empowers us to respond like Jesus—the Light of the World—so we can reflect His radiant character in the darkness. According to Paul the apostle, nothing is more valuable than our intimacy with Christ and the righteousness that comes through our faith in Him (PHILIPPIANS 3:8–9). His life proved that knowing Jesus and the power of His resurrection changes us, impacting the way we live and the way we respond when trials disrupt our lives (VV. 10–16).

When we spend time with God’s Son daily, the Holy Spirit equips us with the truth we need—enabling us to face every challenge on this earth in ways that reflect Christ’s character (VV. 17–21). We can be beacons of God’s love and hope, cutting through the darkness until the day He calls us home or comes again.

쇠처럼 강한 것

철갑딱정벌레는 포식자로부터 자신을 보호하는 튼튼한 외관을 갖고 있습니다. 그런데 그 중 특별한 한 종류에게는 외부의 압력에 견딜 수 있는 ‘아주 특별한’ 능력이 있습니다. 그 곤충의 딱딱한 외부 껍질은 압력에 균열되지 않고 늘어나서 함께 결합되며, 등이 평평하고 옆모습이 낮아서 부러지지 않고 잘 버팁니다. 과학 실험을 통해 그 곤충은 자신의 몸무게의 거의 4만 배에 달하는 압력에도 살아남을 수 있다는 것을 보여주었습니다.

하나님이 이 곤충을 특별히 강하게 만드신 것처럼 예레미야에게도 그런 끈질긴 회복력을 주셨습니다. 선지자가 이스라엘에 달갑지 않은 메시지를 전함으로 심한 공격을 받을 것을 아신 하나님은 그를 “쇠기둥과 놋성벽”으로 만들겠다고 약속하셨습니다(예레미야 1:18). 선지자는 납작해지거나 부숴지거나 제압당하지도 않고, 그의 예언은 하나님의 임재와 구원의 능력으로 굳건히 서게 되었습니다.

예레미야는 평생 동안 억울한 누명을 쓰고 체포되고 재판을 받고 매를 맞고 투옥되고 우물에 던져졌지만 그래도 살아남았습니다. 예레미야는 내면의 고통의 압력에도 끈질기게 버텼습니다. 의문과 슬픔이 그를 괴롭혔으며, 끊임없는 배척과 바벨론의 침략에 대한 두려움은 그의 정신적 스트레스를 가중시켰습니다.

하나님은 예레미야의 심령과 증언이 부숴지지 않도록 지속적으로 도와주셨습니다. 하나님께서 주신 사명을 포기하거나 믿음으로 사는 삶을 그만두고 싶을 때 예레미야의 하나님이 우리의 하나님이라는 사실을 기억해야 합니다. 하나님은 우리를 쇠처럼 강하게 하실 수 있습니다. 우리가 약할 때 하나님의 능력이 온전히 나타나기 때문입니다(고린도후서 12:9).

AS STRONG AS IRON

Ironclad beetles are known for their tough exterior which protects them from predators. One special variety, however, has extraordinary strength under pressure. The insect’s hard, outer shell stretches, rather than cracks, where it joins together. Its flat back and low profile also help it to resist fractures. Scientific tests show that it can survive a compression force of nearly 40,000 times its body weight.

Just as God made this bug extra tough, He gave resilience to Jeremiah as well. The prophet would face intense pressure when he delivered unwelcome messages to Israel, so God promised to make him “an iron pillar and a bronze wall” (JEREMIAH 1:18). The prophet wouldn’t be flattened, dismantled, or overwhelmed. His words would stand strong because of God’s presence and rescuing power.

Throughout his life, Jeremiah was falsely accused, arrested, tried, beaten, imprisoned, and tossed into a well—yet he survived. Jeremiah also persisted despite the weight of inner struggles. Doubt and grief plagued him. Constant rejection and the dread of a Babylonian invasion added to his mental stress.

God continually helped Jeremiah so that his spirit and testimony weren’t shattered. When we feel like giving up on the mission He’s given us, or backing away from living faith-filled lives, we can remember that Jeremiah’s God is our God. He can make us as strong as iron because His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9).

자비로운 아버지

여덟 살 난 가브리엘이 뇌종양 제거 수술을 받은 후 옆머리에 눈에 띄게 큰 흉터가 생겼습니다. 자기가 마치 괴물 같다고 아이가 말하자 그의 아버지 조쉬는 아이디어를 내어 가브리엘의 흉터와 같은 모양으로 옆머리에 문신을 새김으로써 그가 아들을 얼마나 사랑하는지를 보여주었습니다.

시편 기자에 따르면 이것이 바로 하나님이 “그의 자녀들”에 대해 갖고 계신 공감하고 불쌍히 여기는 사랑입니다(시편 103:13). 다윗은 인간의 삶에서 볼 수 있는 비유로 하나님의 사랑을 설명했습니다. 그는 하나님의 사랑은 자녀를 돌보는 좋은 아버지의 마음처럼 온화하다고 말했습니다(17절). 인간의 아버지가 자녀에게 긍휼을 베푸는 것처럼 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지 하나님도 자기를 경외하는 자들에게 사랑과 보살핌을 베풀어 주십니다. 하나님은 자기 백성들과 공감하는 자비로운 아버지이십니다.

A COMPASSIONATE FATHER

After eight-year-old Gabriel underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his brain, it left a noticeable scar on the side of his head. When the boy said he felt like a monster, his dad, Josh, had an idea: demonstrate how much he loved his son by getting a tattoo on the side of his head with the same shape as Gabriel’s scar.

According to the psalmist, this is the kind of empathic and compassionate love God has for “his children” (PSALM 103:13). Using a metaphor drawn from human life, David illustrated God’s love. He said it’s as tender as a good father’s care for his children (V. 17). Just as a human father shows compassion to his children, so God, our heavenly Father, shows love and care toward those who fear Him. He’s a compassionate father, who empathizes with His people.

When we’re weak and feel like we’re unlovable because of the scars of life, may we receive, by faith, our heavenly Father’s love toward us. He demonstrated His compassion by sending his Son to lay “down his life for us” (1 JOHN 3:16)—for our salvation. With this one act, not only can we experience God’s love for us, but we can look to the cross and see it. Aren’t you glad that we have a High Priest who can “empathize with our weaknesses” (HEBREWS 4:15)? He has the scars to prove it.
