커피콩 담았던 그릇

나는 커피를 마시지 않지만, 커피콩의 향을 맡으면 위로와 애틋함을 동시에 느끼곤 합니다. 딸 멜리사가 10대였을 때 자신의 방을 따뜻하고 기분 좋은 냄새가 스며들도록 커피콩을 그릇에 가득 담아두어 자신만의 독특한 향이 나는 침실로 꾸몄습니다.

멜리사가 17세에 차 사고로 이 땅에서의 삶을 마감한 후로 거의 20년이 지났지만, 우리는 아직도 멜리사의 커피콩 담았던 그릇을 가지고 있습니다. 그것은 우리와 함께 했던 멜리사의 생을 지속적으로 향기롭게 기억하게 해 줍니다.

성경도 향기를 암시의 상징으로 사용합니다. 아가서에서 향기를 남녀 간 사랑의 상징이라고 말합니다(1:3; 4:11,16 참조). 호세아서는 하나님께서 이스라엘을 용서하시는 것을 “그의 향기는 레바논 백향목 같으리니”라고 말합니다(호세아 14:6). 마리아가 예수님의 발에 향유를 부어 형제자매의 집을 향유 냄새로 가득히 채웠던(요한복음 12:3) 일은 예수님의 죽음을 미리 암시했습니다(7절 참조).

THE COFFEE-BEAN BOWL

I’m not a coffee drinker, but one sniff of coffee beans brings me a moment of both solace and wistfulness. When our teenage daughter Melissa was making her bedroom uniquely hers, she filled a bowl with coffee beans to permeate her room with a warm, pleasant scent.

It’s been nearly two decades since Melissa’s earthly life ended in a car accident at age seventeen, but we still have that coffeebean bowl. It gives us a continual, aromatic remembrance of Mell’s life with us.

Scripture also uses fragrances as a reminder. Song of Songs refers to fragrances as a symbol of love between a man and a woman (SEE 1:3; 4:11, 16). In Hosea, God’s forgiveness of Israel is said to be “fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon” (HOSEA 14:6). And Mary’s anointing of Jesus’ feet, which caused the house of Mary and her siblings to be “filled with the fragrance of the perfume” (JOHN 12:3), pointed ahead to Jesus’ death (SEE V. 7).

The idea of fragrance can also help us be mindful of our testimony of faith to those around us. Paul explained it this way: “We are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 CORINTHIANS 2:15).

Just as the scent of coffee beans reminds me of Melissa, may our lives produce a scent of Jesus and His love that reminds others of their need of Him. - DAVE BRANON

마음에서 나오는 것들

“노아의 방주 작전”이라는 이름의 구조 작전은 동물 애호가들에게는 재미있게 들릴지 모르지만 나쏘 동물 학대 방지 협회에게는 악몽 이었습니다. 어떤 집에서 나는 소음과 지독한 악취에 대한 민원을 접수 받고, 인부들은 롱아일랜드의 한 집에 들어가 방치되어 있던 400여 마리의 동물들을 발견해 데리고 나왔습니다.

우리가 더러운 환경에서 수백 마리의 동물을 방치하고 있지는 않겠지만, 예수님께서는 우리가 마음에 품고 있을지 모르는 악하고 나쁜 생각과 행동은 드러내어 제거할 필요가 있다고 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님이 제자들에게 무엇이 사람을 깨끗하게 하고 더럽게 하는지 가르치실 때, 사람을 더럽게 하는 것은 더러운 손이나 “입에 들어가는 모든 것”이 아니라 악한 마음이라고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 15:17-19). 우리 마음의 악취는 결국 우리 삶에서 배어 나올 것입니다. 그리고 예수님은 “마음에서”(19 절) 나오는 악한 생각과 행동들을 예를 들어 말씀하셨습니다. 아무리 많은 형식적인 종교 활동과 예식으로도 그 악한 생각과 행동들을 깨끗하게 만들 수 없습니다. 우리의 마음을 변화시키기 위해서는 하나님이 필요합니다.

우리는 예수님의 내면을 뒤집는 가르침을 실천하기 위해 그분께 우리 마음의 추한 모습을 보여주어서 그 악취를 일으키는 원인을 제거하시게 해야 합니다. 그리스도께서 우리 마음에서 나오는 것들을 드러내실 때 그분은 우리의 말과 행동이 예수님을 닮을 수 있도록 도우실 것이며 그로 말미암아 풍기는 우리 삶의 향기는 그분을 기쁘게 할 것입니다.

OUT OF THE HEART

A rescue mission nicknamed “Operation Noah’s Ark” might sound fun for animal lovers, but it was a nightmare for the Nassau Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. After receiving complaints about the noise and the horrid stench coming from a certain house, workers entered the Long Island home and found (and later removed) more than four hundred animals from their neglected conditions.

We may not be holding hundreds of animals in filthy conditions, but Jesus said we might be harboring evil and sinful thoughts and actions in our hearts that need to be exposed and removed.

In teaching His disciples about what makes a person clean and unclean, Jesus said it isn’t dirty hands or “whatever enters the mouth” that defiles a person, but an evil heart (MATTHEW 15:17–19). The stench from our hearts will eventually leak out from our lives. Then Jesus gave examples of evil thoughts and actions that come “out of the heart” (V. 19). No amount of external religious activities and rituals can make them clean. We need God to transform our hearts.

We can practice Jesus’ inside-out ethic by giving Him access to the squalor of our hearts and letting Him remove what’s causing the stench. As Christ uncovers what’s coming from our hearts, He’ll help our words and actions be aligned with His desires, and the aroma from our lives will please Him. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

GOD’S HELP FOR OUR FUTURE

According to psychologist Meg Jay, our minds tend to think about our future selves similarly to how we think about complete strangers. Why? It’s probably due to what’s sometimes called the “empathy gap.” It can be hard to empathize and care for people we don’t know personally—even future versions of ourselves. So in her work, Jay tries to help young people imagine their future selves and take steps to care for them. This includes working out actionable plans for who they will one day be—paving the way for them to pursue their dreams and to continue to thrive.

In Psalm 90, we’re invited to see our lives not just in the present, but as a whole—to ask God to help us “number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (V. 12). Remembering that our time on earth is limited can remind us of our desperate need to rely on God. We need His help to learn how to find satisfaction and joy—not just now, but “all our days” (V. 14). We need His help to learn to think not just of ourselves, but of future generations (V. 16). And we need His help to serve Him with the time we’ve been given—as He establishes the work of our hands and hearts (V. 17). - MONICA LA ROSE

기적 같은 구원

THE MIRACLE OF SALVATION

Blogger Kevin Lynn’s life seemed to be falling apart. In a recent article he recounted, “I actually put a gun to my head . . . . It took for God to supernaturally step into my room and my life. And at that moment, I really found what I know is God now.” God intervened and prevented Lynn from taking his life. He filled him with conviction and gave him an overwhelming reminder of His loving presence. Instead of hiding this powerful encounter, Lynn shared his experience with the world, creating a YouTube ministry where he shares his own transformation story as well as the stories of others.

When Jesus’ follower and friend Lazarus died, many assumed that Jesus was too late (JOHN 11:32). Lazarus had been in his tomb for four days before Christ arrived, but He turned this moment of anguish into a miracle when He raised him from the dead (V. 38). “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” (V. 40).

Just as Jesus raised Lazarus from death to life, He offers us new life through Him. By sacrificing His life on the cross, Christ paid the penalty for our sins and offers us forgiveness when we accept His gift of grace. We’re freed from the bondage of our sins, renewed by His everlasting love, and given the opportunity to change the course of our lives. - KIMYA LODER

CHOOSE WISELY

Astronaut Chris Ferguson made a difficult decision as the commander of the flight crew scheduled for a journey to the International Space Station. But that decision didn’t have anything to do with the mechanics of flight or the safety of his fellow astronauts. Instead, it pertained to what he considers his most important work: his family. Ferguson opted to keep his feet planted firmly on Earth so he could be present for his daughter’s wedding.

We all face difficult decisions at times—decisions that cause us to evaluate what matters most to us in life, because one option comes at the expense of the other. Jesus aimed to communicate this truth to His disciples and a crowd of onlookers regarding life’s most important decision—to follow Him. To be a disciple, He said, would require them to “deny themselves” in order to walk with Him (MARK 8:34). They might have been tempted to spare themselves the sacrifices required of following Christ and instead seek their own desires, but He reminded them it would come at the price of that which matters much more.

We’re often tempted to pursue things that seem of great value, yet they distract us from following Jesus. Let’s ask God to guide us in the choices we face each day so we’ll choose wisely and honor Him. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

THE POWER OF A NAME

Seeking to affirm some children who live on the streets in Mumbai, India, Ranjit created a song of their names. Coming up with a unique melody for each name, he taught them the tune, hoping to give them a positive memory related to what they’re called. For children who don’t regularly hear their name spoken in love, he bestowed on them a gift of respect.

Names are important in the Bible, often reflecting a person’s character traits or new role. For instance, God changed the names of Abram and Sarai when He made a covenant of love with them, promising that He would be their God and they would be His people. Abram, which means “exalted father,” became Abraham, which means “father of many.” And Sarai, which means princess,” became Sarah, which means “princess of many” (SEE GENESIS 17:5, 15).

God’s new names included the gracious promise that they would no longer be childless. When Sarah gave birth to their son, they were overjoyed and named him Isaac, which means “he laughs”: “Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me’ ” (GENESIS 21:6).

We show honor and respect to people when we call them by name and affirm who God has created them to be. A loving nickname that affirms someone’s unique qualities as one created in the image of God can do the same. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

이야기는 끝나지 않았다

영국 TV 드라마 ‘라인 오브 듀티(Line of Duty)’의 마지막 회가 방영될 때, 조직범죄에 대항하는 싸움이 어떻게 끝날지 보려는 시청자들 때문에 기록적으로 시청률이 올라갔습니다. 하지만 악이 결국 이길 것을 암시하며 드라마가 끝나자 많은 시청자들이 실망했습니다. 어떤 시청자는 이렇게 이야기했습니다. “나쁜 사람들이 정의의 심판을 받기를 바랐어요. 우리는 도덕적인 결말을 원했거든요.”

사회학자 피터 버거는 사람들은 소망과 정의에 굶주려 있다고 이야기했습니다. 언젠가는 악이 극복되고 악한 일을 한 사람들이 그들 범죄의 대가를 치르게 될 것이라는 소망 말입니다. 나쁜 사람들이 승리하는 세상은 우리가 생각하는 세상의 순리와 맞지 않습니다. 그 실망한 시청자들은 아마도 부지불식간에 정의로운 세상으로 다시 변하기를 바라는 인류의 깊은 열망을 표현하고 있었던 것입니다.

주기도문을 보면, 예수님은 세상에 존재하는 악에 대해 현실적인 태도를 보입니다. 악은 우리 가운데 실재하며, 그래서 용서가 필요합니다(마태복음 6:12). 뿐만 아니라 좀 더 큰 관점에서는 악으로부터의 구원이 필요합니다(13절). 하지만, 악이 존재하는 현실을 인정하는 생각은 소망과 짝을 이룹니다. 악이 존재하지 않는 곳은 바로 천국이며, 하늘에 있는 그 왕국이 땅에 임할 것이라는 것이 우리의 소망입니다(10절). 언젠가 하나님의 정의가 실현되면, 그분의 “도덕적인 결말”이 임해서, 악은 영원히 추방될 것입니다(요한계시록 21:4).

따라서 이 세상에서 나쁜 사람들이 승리하는 것을 보고 실망감에 빠질 때 이것을 기억합시다. 하나님의 뜻이 “하늘에서 이루어진 것같이 땅에서도” 이루어지기까지 우리에게는 언제나 소망이 있습니다. 왜냐하면 아직 이야기는 끝나지 않았기 때문입니다.

THE STORY ISN’T OVER

When British drama Line of Duty concluded, record numbers watched to see how its fight against organized crime would end. But many viewers were left disappointed when the finale implied that evil would ultimately win. “I wanted the bad guys brought to justice,” one fan said. “We needed that moral ending.”

Sociologist Peter Berger once noted that we hunger for hope and justice—hope that evil will one day be overcome and that those who caused it will be made to face their crimes. A world where the bad guys win goes against how we know the world should work. Without probably realizing it, those disappointed fans were expressing humanity’s deep longing for the world to be made right again.

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus is realistic about evil. It exists not only between us, requiring forgiveness (MATTHEW 6:12), but on a grand scale, requiring deliverance (V. 13). This realism, however, is matched with hope. There’s a place where evil doesn’t exist— heaven—and that heavenly kingdom is coming to earth (V. 10). One day God’s justice will be complete, His “moral ending” will come, and evil will be banished for good (REVELATION 21:4).

So when the real-life bad guys win and disappointment sets in, let’s remember this: until God’s will is done “on earth as it is in heaven,” there is always hope—because the story isn’t over. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

사람들이 필요한 사람

스포츠 기자로서 명예의 전당에 오른 데이브 킨드레드는 수백여 건에 이르는 주요 스포츠 경기와 선수권 대회를 취재했으며, 무하마드 알리의 전기도 집필했습니다. 그가 은퇴 후 무료함을 달래기 위해, 동네 학교 여학생 농구 경기를 참관하게 되었습니다. 얼마 후부터 그는 매 경기마다 기사를 써서 온라인에 올리기 시작했습니다. 그런데 데이브의 어머니와 손자가 죽고 아내가 뇌졸증으로 고생하면서, 그가 취재했던 그 농구팀이 자신에게 공동체의 연대감과 삶의 목적을 제공해주고 있다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 그 팀이 그를 필요로 하는 만큼 그도 그 팀이 필요했던 것입니다. 킨드레드는 말했습니다. “이 팀이 나를 살렸어요. 내 삶이 점점 어두워질 때, 이 팀이 나에게 빛이 되어 주었거든요.”

PEOPLE WHO NEED PEOPLE

In his hall-of-fame career as a sportswriter, Dave Kindred covered hundreds of major sporting events and championships and wrote a biography of Muhammad Ali. Growing bored in retirement, he started attending girls’ basketball games at a local school. Soon he began writing stories about each game and posting them online. And when Dave’s mother and grandson died and his wife suffered a debilitating stroke, he realized the team he’d been covering provided him with a sense of community and purpose. He needed them as much as they needed him. Kindred said, “This team saved me. My life had turned dark . . . [and] they were light.”

How does a legendary journalist come to depend on a community of teenagers? The same way a legendary apostle leaned on the fellowship of those he met on his missionary journeys. Did you notice all the people Paul greeted as he closed his letter? (ROMANS 16:3–15). “Greet Andronicus and Junia,” he wrote, “my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me” (V. 7). “Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord” (V. 8). He mentions more than twenty-five people in all, most of whom are not mentioned in Scripture again. But Paul needed them.

Who’s in your community? The best place to begin is with your local church. Anyone there whose life has turned dark? As God leads, you can be a light that points them to Jesus. Someday they may return the favor. - MIKE WITTMER

생수

자른 꽃들이 에콰도르에서 도착했습니다. 우리 집에 도착했을 때는 꽃들이 축 처져 있어 먼 길을 온 티가 났습니다. 제품 설명서를 보니 신선한 냉수로 소생시키라고 되어 있었습니다. 그러면서 우선 꽃 줄기 끝을 다듬어 꽃이 물을 더 쉽게 흡수할 수 있도록 하라고 했습니다. 과연 그 꽃들이 다시 생기를 되찾게 될까요?

다음날 아침 나는 그 해답을 보게 되었습니다. 에콰도르산 꽃다발은 내가 생전 처음 보는 꽃들로 눈부시게 아름다웠습니다. 신선한 물이 모든 것을 변화시킨 것입니다. 예수님께서 물에 대해 말씀하신 것과 성도들에게 물이 의미하는 바를 생각나게 했습니다.

예수님께서 사마리아 여자에게 마실 물을 청하시며 그 여인이 우물에서 길어온 물을 마시겠다는 뜻을 밝히셨을 때, 주님은 여인의 삶을 바꾸셨습니다. 그 여인은 예수님의 부탁에 놀랐습니다. 유대인들은 사마리아인들을 멸시했기 때문이었습니다. 그러나 예수님은 “네가 만일 하나님의 선물과 또 네게 물 좀 달라 하는 이가 누구인 줄 알았더라면 네가 그에게 구하였을 것이요 그가 생수를 네게 주었으리라”(요한복음 4:10)고 말씀하셨습니다. 후에 주님은 성전에서 “누구든지 목 마르거든 내게로 와서 마시라”(7:37)고 외치셨습니다. 그분을 믿는 사람들에 대해 “그 배에서 생수의 강이 흘러 나오리라”(38절) 고 하신 것은 “그를 믿는 사람들이 나중에 받을 성령을 가리켜 말씀하신”(39 절) 것이었습니다.

늘 새롭게 하시는 하나님의 성령은 오늘 삶에 지친 우리를 소생시키십니다. 주님은 생수이시며 우리 영혼에 거하시며 우리를 거룩하게 소생시켜 주십니다. 바로 오늘 이 생수를 많이 마시기를 원합니다.

LIVING WATER

The cut flowers came from Ecuador. By the time they arrived at my house, they were droopy and road-weary. Instructions said revive them with a cool drink of refreshing water. Before that, however, the flower stems had to be trimmed so they could drink the water more easily. But would they survive?

The next morning, I discovered my answer. The Ecuadorian bouquet was a glorious sight, featuring flowers I’d never seen before. Fresh water made all the difference—a reminder of what Jesus said about water and what it means to believers.

When Jesus asked a Samaritan woman for a drink of water—implying He’d drink from what she fetched from the well—He changed her life. She was surprised by His request. Jews looked down on Samaritans. But Jesus said, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water” (JOHN 4:10). Later, in the temple, He cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink” (7:37). Among those who believed in Him, “rivers of living water will flow from within them. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive” (VV. 38–39).

God’s refreshing Spirit revives us today when we’re life-weary. He’s the Living Water, dwelling in our souls with holy refreshment. May we drink deep today. - PATRICIA RAYBON

무모한 결정

십 대 때 나는 고등학교 농구팀 연습을 마치고 친구의 차를 따라가려고 그의 집까지 매우 빠른 속도로 운전했습니다. 비가 많이 오고 있어서 친구 차를 따라잡기가 어려웠습니다. 내 차의 와이퍼가 물로 덮인 앞 유리를 닦아내자 갑자기 친구 차가 앞에 멈춰 있지 않겠습니까! 나는
급브레이크를 밟았고 길 밖으로 미끄러져 큰 나무에 부딪쳤습니다. 내 차는 완전히 망가졌습니다. 나중에 내가 깨어나 보니 지역 병원 혼수상태의 환자들이 입원한 병동에 누워있었습니다. 하나님의 은혜로 살아났지만 나의 무모한 행동으로 매우 값비싼 대가를 치렀습니다.

모세도 무모한 결정으로 큰 대가를 치렀습니다. 그의 잘못된 선택은 물이 부족해서 벌어진 것이었습니다 (제 경우엔 물이 너무 많아서 였지만). 신 광야에서 물을 구할 수 없었던 이스라엘 백성들은 모여서 모세를 공박 했습니다(민수기 20:2). 하나님은 그 지친 지도자에게 반석에게 말을 하면 “물을 밖으로 흘릴 것”(8절, 새번역)이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 모세는 말로 명령하는 대신에 “반석을 두 번 쳤”습니다(11절). 하나님께서는 “너희가 나를 믿지 아니하여... [약속의 땅에 들어가지 못하리라]”고 말씀하셨습니다(12절).

무모한 결정을 내리면 우리는 그 대가를 치러야 합니다. “지식 없는 소원은 선하지 못하고 발이 급한 사람은 잘못 가느니라”(잠언 19:2). 오늘 당장 선택과 결정을 해야 할 때 기도하며 조심스럽게 하나님의 지혜와 인도를 구하기를 바랍니다.

RECKLESS DECISIONS

As a teen, I was driving way too fast trying to follow my friend to his home after a high school basketball practice. It was raining hard, and I was having a hard time keeping up with his car. Suddenly, my wipers cleared the watery windshield only to reveal my friend’s sedan stopped in front of me! I slammed on the brakes, slid off the street, and struck a large tree. My car was destroyed. Later I awoke in the comatose ward of a local hospital. While by God’s grace I survived, my reckless ways had proved to be very costly.

Moses made a reckless decision that cost him greatly. His poor choice, however, involved a lack of water—not too much of it (as in my case). The Israelites were without water in the Desert of Zin, and “the people gathered in opposition to Moses” (NUMBERS 20:2). God told the frazzled leader to speak to a rock and it would “pour out its water” (V. 8). Instead, he “struck the rock twice” (V. 11). God said, “Because you did not trust in me . . . , you will not [enter the promised land]” (V. 12).

When we make reckless decisions, we pay the consequences. “Desire without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way!” (PROVERBS 19:2). May we prayerfully, carefully seek God’s wisdom and guidance in the choices and decisions we make today. - TOM FELTEN
