원치 않는 손님

카일과 앨리슨은 이색적인 장소에서 멋진 신혼여행을 보냈습니다. 하지만 집에 돌아와보니 카일의 발에 가려운 이상한 발진이 생긴 것을 알게 되었습니다. 부부가 감염병 전문의를 찾아가자, 의사는 카일의 새 슬리퍼 때문에 생긴 물집을 통해 작은 기생충이 발 속으로 파고들어서 그렇다고 말해주었습니다. 꿈 같은 휴가로 시작된 신혼여행 끝에 원치 않은 기생충 “손님”과의 힘든 싸움을 하게 되었습니다.

다윗은 죄와 싸우기 위해 하나님께 도움을 구하지 않으면 자신이 꿈꾸는 하나님 앞에서의 즐거운 삶도 죄와 반항이라는 원치 않는 손님과의 싸움으로 바뀔 거라는 것을 알았습니다. 다윗은 하나님이 자연 세계 속에 자신을 드러내시며(시편 19:1-6) 하나님의 가르침 속에 그분의 지혜가 담겨 있다는 (7-10절) 사실을 선포한 후, 경솔함과 교만, 고의적인 불순종으로부터 자기를 지켜 달라고 하나님께 간구했습니다. “나를 숨은 허물에서 벗어나게 하소서 또 주의 종에게 고의로 죄를 짓지 말게 하소서”(12-13절). 그는 죄라는 감염병에서 자신을 지켜낼 인간적인 방법이 없다는 것을 알았기 때문에 지혜롭게 하나님께 도움을 간구했습니다.

하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶을 살려고 하는 우리의 꿈이 죄에 사로잡히지 않도록 하려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 계속해서 우리의 눈을 하나님께로 향하고, 죄를 고백하고 회개하며, 하나님의 도움을 구함으로써 원치 않는 영적 기생충이 우리의 삶에 파고들지 않게 합시다.

UNWANTED GUESTS

Kyle and Allison had a wonderful honeymoon in an exotic location. When they returned home, however, they discovered that Kyle’s feet had developed a strange, itchy rash. The couple was referred to an infectious disease specialist. He informed them that small parasites had burrowed their way into Kyle’s feet through blisters caused by his new flip flops. What started out as a dream vacation ended in a challenging battle with unwanted “guests.”

David knew that if he didn’t ask God for help to fight sin, his dream of living a pleasing life before Him would turn into a battle with the unwanted guests of sin and rebellion. After declaring how God is revealed in the natural world (PSALM 19:1–6) and His wisdom found in His instruction (VV. 7–10), David asked God to protect him from inadvertent, arrogant, and deliberate disobedience. “Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins,” he wrote (VV. 12–13). He recognized that he didn’t have the human resources to keep the infectious disease of sin from affecting him. So, he wisely asked God for help.

How can we make sure our dream of living in a way that honors God doesn’t become hijacked by sin? Let’s keep our eyes on Him, confess and repent of our sin, and seek divine help in keeping unwanted spiritual parasites from burrowing into our lives.

은혜로운 여행

미국 남서부 애리조나 주에 있는 칙칙한 도시 왜(Why)라는 곳에서 여행을 시작한다고 생각해 봅시다. 대륙을 가로질러 가다 보면 텍사스 주의 불확실(Uncertain)이라는 도시를 지나게 됩니다. 거기서 북동쪽으로 방향을 틀어 테네시 주의 음울(Dismal)이라는 도시에서 잠시 쉬고 마침내 목적지인 펜실베이니아 주의 공황(Panic)이라는 도시에 도착하게 됩니다. 이 도시들은 여행 목적지로 정하기에는 전혀 적절하지 않을 것 같지만 미국에 실제로 존재하는 곳들입니다.

때로는 삶의 여정도 정확히 이와 같이 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 우리는 이스라엘 백성들이 광야에서 힘들게 살았던 것을 보면서(신명기 2:7) 삶이 힘들 수 있다는 것을 쉽게 공감합니다. 그런데 그와 비슷한 또 다른 여정을 알고 있나요? 우리는 하나님의 길을 벗어나 우리 자신의 여정을 계획하고 (1:42-43), 이스라엘 백성들처럼 우리의 필요를 채우는 데에만 급급하여 자주 불평합니다(민수기 14:2). 그리고 매일 불안과 초조 속에 그들처럼 하나님의 목적을 의심하기도 합니다(11절). 이스라엘 백성들의 이야기는 우리 자신의 삶 속에 끊임없이 반복되고 있습니다.

하나님은 우리가 그분의 길을 좇으면 음울한(Dismal) 곳보다 훨씬 더 좋은 곳으로 우리를 인도하실 거라고 확언해 주십니다. 하나님은 우리에게 진정 필요한 것들을 부족함 없이 채워 주실 것입니다(신명기 2:7; 빌립보서 4:19). 하지만 우리는 이런 사실을 이미 알면서도 그대로 실행하지 못할 때가 많습니다. 우리는 하나님이 정해주신 길을 따라가야 합니다.

조금 더 운전을 해야 하지만, 공황(Panic)에서 차로 6시간가량 더 가면 웨스트버지니아 주의 보장(Assurance)이라는 곳에 다다를 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 길을 이끄시도록 맡겨드릴 때(시편 119:35) 우리는 정말 보장된 축복 속에서 운전대를 잡으신 그분과 함께 즐거운 여행을 하게 될 것입니다.

TRAVELING MERCIES

You might start your journey in the southwest United States in a dusty town called Why, Arizona. Heading cross-country would take you through Uncertain, Texas. Bearing northeast, you’d make a rest stop in Dismal, Tennessee. Ultimately, you’d reach your destination—Panic, Pennsylvania. These are real places across the landscape of America, though not likely a trip you’d ever choose to take.

Sometimes this is exactly what the journey of life feels like. We easily identify with the Israelites’ tough life in the wilderness (DEUTERONOMY 2:7)—life can be hard. But do we see the other parallels? We create our own itinerary, turning from God’s way (1:42–43). Like the Israelites, we often grumble about getting our needs met (NUMBERS 14:2). In our daily fretting, we likewise doubt God’s purposes (V. 11). The story of the Israelites is repeated over and over in our own.

God assures us that if we follow His path, He’ll deliver us into a far better place than Dismal. He’ll provide and we’ll lack nothing we really need (DEUTERONOMY 2:7; PHILIPPIANS 4:19). Yet as much as we already know this, we often fail to do it. We need to follow God’s roadmap.

It’s a bit more of a drive, but another six hours by car would take you from the town of Panic to the place known as Assurance, West Virginia. If we let God direct our paths (PSALM 119:35), we’ll journey in joy with Him at the wheel—blessed assurance indeed!

사랑이 없으면 아무 쓸모없다

주문 제작을 맡겼던 테이블의 부품들을 상자에서 꺼내 펼쳐 놓고 나니 뭔가 이상하다는 느낌이 들었습니다. 아름다운 테이블 상판과 다른 부품들은 다 있었는데 테이블 다리 하나가 없었던 것입니다. 다리 네 개가 다 갖춰지지 않아서 테이블을 조립할 수 없으니 결국 아무 쓸모도 없게 되어버렸습니다.

중요한 부품 하나가 없어서 쓸모없게 되는 것은 테이블뿐만이 아닙니다. 바울 사도는 고린도전서에서 성도들에게 필수적인 한 가지가 부족하다고 일깨워주었습니다. 그곳 성도들은 많은 영적 은사들을 갖고 있었지만 사랑이 부족했던 것입니다.

바울은 그 점을 강조하기 위해 과장된 표현을 쓰면서, 그들이 ‘모든’ 지식을 알고 그들에게 있는 것 ‘하나까지 다’ 내어주고 고난을 기꺼이 감당하더라도, 사랑이 기본적인 바탕이 되어 있지 않으면 그들의 행동은 모두 아무것도 아니라고 했습니다(고린도전서 13:1-3). 바울은 그들에게 언제나 사랑으로 행하라고 권면하면서, 언제나 지켜주고 믿고 바라며 인내하는 사랑의 아름다움을 감동적으로 묘사하고 있습니다(4-7절).

신앙 공동체에서 가르치고 격려하고 섬기기 위해 우리의 영적 은사들을 사용할 때 하나님은 언제나 사랑을 요구하신다는 것을 기억하십시오. 그렇지 않으면 다리 하나가 없는 테이블과 같습니다. 사랑이 없으면 지으심을 받은 진정한 목적을 이룰 수 없습니다.

USELESS WITHOUT LOVE

After taking the pieces for my special-order table from the box and laying them out before me, I noticed something wasn’t quite right. The beautiful top for the table and other parts were accounted for, but it was missing one of the legs. Without all of the legs, I couldn’t assemble the table, rendering it useless.

It’s not just tables that are useless when missing one vital piece. In the book of 1 Corinthians, Paul reminded his readers that they were missing one essential component. The believers possessed many spiritual gifts but lacked love.

Using exaggerated language to emphasize his point, Paul wrote that even if his readers had all knowledge, if they gave away every single thing they owned, and even if they willingly suffered hardship, without the essential foundation of love, their actions would all amount to nothing (1 CORINTHIANS 13:1–3). Paul encouraged them to always infuse their actions with love, movingly describing the beauty of a love that always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres (VV. 4–7).

As we use our spiritual gifts, perhaps to teach, encourage, or serve in our faith communities, remember that God’s design always calls for love. Otherwise, it’s like a table missing a leg. It can’t achieve the true purpose for which it was designed.

온 집안

제임스는 줄무늬 멜빵바지를 입고 찌는듯한 감옥 운동장을 지나 간이 수영장의 물로 들어가 목사님께 세례를 받았습니다. 같이 옥중에 있던 그의 딸 브리트니도 같은 날, 그것도 같은 물에서 세례를 받았다는 소식을 듣고 제임스의 기쁨은 배가되었습니다. 그 일이 알려지자 교도소 직원들까지도 모두 감격해서 눈물을 흘리지 않은 사람이 하나도 없었다고 목사님은 말했습니다. 여러 해 동안 계속 감옥에 들락날락했던 브리트니와 제임스는 하나님께 용서를 구했고 하나님은 그 두 사람 모두에게 새 생명을 주신 것입니다.

성경에는 또 다른 감옥에서의 구원 이야기가 있습니다. 감옥을 지키던 간수와 그 온 가족이 예수님의 사랑으로 구원받은 사건입니다. “큰 지진이 나서 옥터가 움직이고 문이 곧 다 열렸을 때” 바울과 실라가 도망치지 않고 감옥에 그대로 남아 있었습니다(사도행전 16:26-28). 간수가 그들이 떠나지 않은 것에 크게 감동해 그의 집으로 초대해 그의 삶의 변화를 이끈 중요한 질문을 했습니다. “어떻게 하여야 구원을 받으리이까”(30절).

바울과 실라가 대답하기를 “주 예수를 믿으라 그리하면 너와 네 집이 구원을 받으리라”(31절). 이 말씀을 통해 우리는 하나님이 은혜를 주시되 각 개인에게 뿐만 아니라 온 집안에 부어 주시려는 하나님의 마음을 알 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 접한 “간수와 그 집에 있는 모든 사람이” 하나님을 믿게 되었습니다(34절). 우리는 흔히 사랑하는 사람의 구원을 간절히 바라는데, 하나님께서는 그들을 우리보다 더 사랑하신다는 사실을 믿어야 합니다. 하나님은 우리 모두, 온 집안을 구원하시기 원하십니다.

THE WHOLE HOUSE

Wearing his striped jumpsuit, James walked across the steamy jail gym and climbed into the portable pool where he was baptized by the prison chaplain. James’ joy multiplied, however, when he heard that his daughter Brittany—also an inmate—had been baptized that same day . . . in the same water! When they realized what had happened, even the staff got emotional. “There wasn’t a dry eye,” the chaplain said. In and out of jail for years, Brittany and her dad both wanted God’s forgiveness. And together, God gave them new life.

Scripture describes another prison encounter—this time with a jailer—where Jesus’ love transformed an entire family. After a “violent earthquake” shook the prison and “the prison doors flew open,” Paul and Silas didn’t run but remained in their cell (ACTS 16:26–28). The jailer, overcome with gratitude that they didn’t flee, took them to his house and eventually asked that lifechanging question: “What must I do to be saved?” (V. 30)

“Believe in the Lord Jesus,” they answered, “you and your household” (V. 31). The response reveals God’s desire to pour out mercy on not only individuals but also entire families. Encountering God’s love, they all came “to believe in God—[the jailer] and his whole household” (V. 34). Though we’re often eager for the salvation of those we love, we can trust that God loves them even more than we do. He desires to renew all of us, our whole house.

믿음의 힘을 보이기

동물원에 갔다가 나무늘보 전시관 근처에서 잠시 쉬게 되었습니다. 나무늘보는 거꾸로 매달려 있었는데 가만히 정지해 있는 것이 매우 편안해 보였습니다. 나는 한숨을 쉬었습니다. 왜냐하면 나는 건강 문제로 움직일 수 없어 고통을 겪고 있었고 필사적으로 어떻게든 움직이고 싶었습니다. 나 자신의 한계에 분노하며 너무도 나약하다는 생각을 멈추고 싶었습니다. 그러다 나무늘보가 한쪽 팔을 뻗어 근처의 나뭇가지를 움켜쥐고 다시 멈추는 과정을 보았습니다. 움직이지 않고 가만히 있기 위해서는 상당한 힘이 필요합니다. 내가 천천히 움직이거나 나무늘보처럼 가만히 있기 위해서는 엄청난 근력 이상의 그 무엇인가가 필요했습니다. 삶의 절망적인 순간마다 하나님을 신뢰하기 위해서 나는 ‘초자연적인 힘’이 필요했습니다.

시편 46편에서 기자는 하나님이 우리에게 힘만 ‘주신’ 것이 아니라 우리의 힘이 ‘되심’을 선포합니다(1절). 우리 주변에 무슨 일이 있어도 “만군의 여호와께서 우리와 함께 하신다”(7절)는 확신을 가지고 이 진리를 반복해 말하고 있습니다(11절).

나무늘보와 마찬가지로 우리의 일상적인 삶에도 종종 느린 변화와 거의 움직임이 없는 정적의 시간이 있습니다. 우리가 하나님의 변함없는 성품을 믿을 때, 어떤 계획이나 추진속도라도 우리에게 맞는 것을 정해주시는 하나님의 능력에 의지할 수 있습니다.

우리가 계속해서 고난과 싸우거나 기다림의 어려움을 겪을지라도 하나님은 신실하게 함께 하십니다. 우리가 연약하다고 느낄 때에도 그분은 우리의 믿음의 힘이 강하다는 것을 입증할 수 있도록 도와주실 것입니다.

FLEXING FAITH MUSCLES

During a trip to the zoo, I stopped to rest near the sloth exhibit. The creature hung upside down. He seemed content being completely still. I sighed. Because of my health issues, I struggled with stillness and desperately wanted to move forward, to do something—anything. Resenting my limitations, I longed to stop feeling so weak. But while staring at the sloth, I observed how he stretched one arm, gripped a nearby branch, and stopped again. Being still required strength. If I wanted to be content with moving slowly or being as still as the sloth, I needed more than incredible muscle power. To trust God with every dragging moment of my life, I needed supernatural power.

In Psalm 46, the writer proclaims that God doesn’t just give us strength, He is our strength (V. 1). No matter what’s going on around us, the “Lord Almighty is with us” (V. 7). The psalmist repeats this truth with conviction (V. 11).

Like the sloth, our day-to-day adventures often require slow steps and extended periods of seemingly impossible stillness. When we rely on God’s unchanging character, we can depend on His strength no matter what plan and pace He determines is right for us.

Though we may continue to battle afflictions or struggle with waiting, God remains faithfully present. Even when we don’t feel strong, He’ll help us flex our faith muscles.

예수는 누구신가

사람들은 예수님을 누구라고 믿습니까? 어떤 사람들은 그는 훌륭한 스승이었지만 그저 한 인간이었다고 말합니다. C.S. 루이스는 이렇게 썼습니다. “이 사람은 과거에도, 또 현재에도 하나님의 아들이거나, 아니면 그저 미친 사람이거나 그보다 더 못한 사람일 수도 있습니다. 그를 어리석은 자로 여길 수도 있고, 침을 뱉고 마귀처럼 죽일 수도 있고, 그의 발 앞에 엎드려 그를 주님이나 하나님이라고 부를 수도 있지만, 그가 위대한 스승인 인간이라고 주장하는 허튼소리는 하지 맙시다.” 그의 저서 ‘순전한 기독교’에 나오는 이 유명한 말은 예수님이 거짓으로 자신을 하나님이라고 주장했다면 위대한 선지자가 되지 못했을 것임을 시사합니다. 그것은 궁극적으로 이단일 것입니다.

WHO IS JESUS?

Who do people believe Jesus is? Some say He was a good teacher, but just a man. Author C. S. Lewis wrote, “Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher.” These nowfamous words from Mere Christianity propound that Jesus would not have been a great prophet if He falsely claimed to be God. That would be the ultimate heresy.

While talking with His disciples as they walked between villages, Jesus asked them, “Who do people say I am?” (MARK 8:27). Their answers included John the Baptist, Elijah, and one of the prophets (V. 28). But Jesus wanted to know what they believed: “Who do you say I am?” Peter got it right. “You are the Messiah” (V. 29), the Savior.

But who do we say Jesus is? Jesus could not have been a good teacher or prophet if what He said about Himself—that He and the Father (God) are “one” (JOHN 10:30)—wasn’t true. His followers and even the demons declared His divinity as the Son of God (MATTHEW 8:29; 16:16; 1 JOHN 5:20). Today, may we spread the word about who Christ is as He provides what we need.

가르침을 받아들이는 마음

요즘은 안타깝게도, 다른 사람들의 의견뿐만 아니라 그 의견을 가진 사람을 공격하는 것이 “정상”인 세상이 되었습니다. 학계에서도 마찬가지입니다. 그렇기에, 나는 신학자요 이론가인 리처드 헤이즈가 옛날에 썼던 논문을 힘들여 다시 고쳐 쓴 것을 보고 놀랐습니다. 그의 저서 ‘성경 구문으로 읽기’에서, 헤이즈는 자신의 이전 생각들을 접고 이제 평생 동안 배워야만 한다는 그의 결단을 나타내는 겸손한 마음을 보여주었습니다.

잠언을 소개할 때, 솔로몬 왕은 이 지혜가 담긴 모음집의 다양한 목적을 열거했습니다. 여러 목적 중에서 솔로몬 왕은 “지혜 있는 자는 듣고 학식이 더할 것이요 명철한 자는 지략을 얻을 것이라”(잠언 1:5)고 말합니다. 예수님을 수십 년 간 따랐음에도 여전히 예수님을 배워가는 중이라고 말한 바울 사도처럼 (빌립보서 3:10), 솔로몬은 지혜 있는 자들이 듣고 배우고 계속 성장해야 한다고 강조합니다.

가르침을 받아들이는 마음은 절대 해로운 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 믿음에 대해 (그리고 삶에 대해) 계속 성장하고 가르침을 받고자 할 때, 성령님이 우리를 진리로 인도하셔서(요한복음 16:13), 선하시며 위대하신 하나님의 경이로움을 더욱 잘 이해하게 될 것입니다.

A TEACHABLE SPIRIT

It has become sadly “normal” to attack not only the opinions of others but also the person holding the opinion. This can be true in academic circles as well. For this reason, I was stunned when scholar and theologian Richard B. Hays wrote a paper that forcefully took to task a work that he himself had written years earlier! In Reading with the Grain of Scripture, Hays demonstrated great humility of heart as he corrected his own past thinking, now finetuned by his lifelong commitment to learning.

As the book of Proverbs was being introduced, King Solomon listed the various intents of this collection of wise sayings. But in the midst of those purposes, he inserted this challenge, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” (PROVERBS 1:5). Like the apostle Paul, who claimed that, even after following Christ for decades, he continued to pursue knowing Jesus (PHILIPPIANS 3:10), Solomon urged the wise to listen, to learn, and to continue to grow.

No one is ever hurt by maintaining a teachable spirit. As we seek to continue to grow and learn about the things of faith (and the things of life), may we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth (JOHN 16:13), that we might better comprehend the wonders of our good and great God.

참된 자유

기차 안에서 책을 읽으면서, 메일링은 중요한 문장에 표시를 하고 책 여백에 메모를 하느라 바빴습니다. 그러나 근처에 있던 엄마와 아이의 대화 때문에 책 읽기를 멈췄습니다. 엄마는 아이에게 도서관에서 빌린 책에 낙서를 하지 말라고 했습니다. 메일링은 그 아이가 자신을 따라 하느라 엄마의 말을 듣지 않을까 봐 재빨리 펜을 치웠습니다. 그녀는 아이가 대출받은 책에 표시하는 것과 내가 내 책에 메모를 하는 것의 차이를 이해하지 못할 나이라는 것을 알았습니다.

메일링의 행동은 고린도전서 10:23-24에 있는 바울 사도의 말씀을 떠올리게 합니다. “모든 것이 가하나 모든 것이 유익한 것은 아니요 모든 것이 가하나 모든 것이 덕을 세우는 것은 아니니 누구든지 자기의 유익을 구하지 말고 남의 유익을 구하라.”

초창기 고린도 교회의 성도들은 주님 안에서의 자유를 개인의 관심을 추구하는 기회로 여겼습니다. 그러나 바울은 이를 다른 사람들을 유익하게 하고 바로 세우는 기회로 봐야 한다고 썼습니다. 바울은 고린도 교회 성도들에게 진정한 자유는 자신을 즐겁게 하기 위한 자유가 아니라 하나님을 기쁘게 하기 위한 것이어야 한다고 가르쳤습니다.

자신이 아닌 다른 이들을 세우기 위해 자유를 사용할 때 우리는 주님을 따르는 것입니다.

TRUE FREEDOM

While reading on the train, Meiling was busy highlighting sentences and jotting down notes in the margins of her book. But a conversation between a mother and child seated nearby stopped her. The mom was correcting her child for doodling in her library book. Meiling quickly put her pen away, not wanting the toddler to ignore her mother’s words by following Meiling’s example. She knew that the child wouldn’t understand the difference between damaging a loaned book and making notes in one you owned.

Meiling’s actions reminded me of the apostle Paul’s inspired words in 1 Corinthians 10:23–24: “ ‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.”

The believers in Jesus in the young church in Corinth saw their freedom in Christ as an opportunity to pursue personal interests. But Paul wrote that they should view it as an opportunity to benefit and build up others. He taught them that true freedom isn’t the right to do as one pleases, but the liberty to do as they should for God.

We follow in Jesus’ footsteps when we use our freedom to choose building others up instead of serving ourselves.

서로를 돌봐 주기

77세의 임시직 교사인 호세는 8년 동안 자신의 차에서 살았습니다. 그 노인은 매일 밤 1997년형 포드 선더버드 LX에 쭈그려 앉아서 컴퓨터의 전원인 자동차 배터리를 조심스레 살펴가면서 저녁 일을 했습니다. 호세는 집세를 내는 데 쓸 돈을 멕시코에 사는 도움이 필요한 여러 가족들에게 보냈습니다. 이른 아침마다, 그의 옛 제자 한 명이 차 트렁크를 뒤지고 있는 호세를 보았습니다. 그때 선생님을 위해 “무언가를 해야만 되겠다는 생각이 들어서” 그는 모금을 시작해 몇 주 뒤 살 집을 마련하는 데 도움이 될 만한 액수의 금액을 만들어 호세에게 전달했습니다.

성경은 우리에게 서로를 돌보라고 반복해서 가르치지만 우리는 종종 우리의 문제를 해결하는데 급급할 뿐입니다. 선지자 스가랴는 하나님께 경배를 드리고 다른 이들을 섬기기보다 “[그들 자신을] 위하여 먹고 마시는” 이스라엘을 책망했습니다(스가랴 7:6). 당시 이스라엘 백성들은 나눔이 있는 공동체적 삶을 무시하고 이웃의 필요를 외면했습니다. 스가랴는 하나님의 가르침을 다음과 같이 분명히 말했습니다. “진실한 재판을 행하며 서로 인애와 긍휼을 베풀며 과부와 고아와 나그네와 궁핍한 자를 압제하지 말라”(9-10절).

자신의 필요를 채우는데 빠져 있기는 쉽지만 믿는 사람들은 다른 사람의 필요에 대해 관심을 가져야 합니다. 하나님의 경제권 아래에서는 모든 것이 풍족합니다. 그리고 자비하신 하나님은 그 풍성함을 다른 사람들과 나누도록 우리를 사용하십니다.

WATCHING OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER

Jose, a seventy-seven-year-old substitute teacher, had been living out of his car for eight years. Every night, the elderly man bunked down in his 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX, carefully monitoring the car battery as it powered his computer for his evening’s work. Instead of using the money earmarked for rent, Jose sent it to numerous family members in Mexico who needed it more. Early every morning, one of the teacher’s former students saw Jose rummaging through his trunk. “I just felt I needed to do something about it,” the man said. So, he launched a fundraiser and weeks later handed Jose a check to help him pay for a place to live.

Though Scripture repeatedly instructs us to watch out for one another, it’s sometimes difficult to see past our own concerns. The prophet Zechariah rebuked Israel who, rather than worshiping God or serving others, were “feasting for [them]selves” (ZECHARIAH 7:6). Ignoring their shared communal life, they disregarded their neighbors’ need. Zechariah made God’s instructions clear: the people were to “administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another . . . [and] not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor” (VV. 9–10).

While it’s easy to be consumed with our own needs, faithfulness calls us to tend to the needs of others. In the divine economy, there’s plenty for all. And God, in His mercy, chooses to use us to give some of that plenty to others.

환상의 팀

친구인 멜라니와 트레버는 몇 마일을 함께 등산했습니다. 그러나 같이 하지 않고 혼자 했더라면 불가능한 일이었습니다. 척추 갈림증이라는 질병을 가지고 태어난 멜라니는 휠체어를 사용해야 하고, 트레버는 녹내장으로 시력을 잃어 혼자서는 등산을 할 수가 없습니다. 그 둘은 콜로라도의 황무지를 여행할 때 서로를 완벽하게 보완해 줄 수 있음을 알았습니다. 트레버가 멜라니를 업고 등산로를 걸어가면 멜라니는 말로 방향을 알려줍니다. 그들은 자신들을 “환상의 팀”이라고 불렀습니다.

바울은 그리스도의 몸인 신자들을 멜라니와 트레버와 비슷한 “환상의 팀”이라고 표현합니다. 그는 로마인들에게 그들 각각의 은사가 더 많은 사람들에게 얼마나 큰 유익을 주는지 알아야 한다고 강조했습니다. 우리의 육체가 각각 다른 기능을 하는 많은 부분들로 이루어진 것처럼, 우리도 함께 “한 몸이 되어” 교회 전체의 유익을 위해 우리의 은사를 사용해야 합니다(로마서 12:5). 바울은 베푸는 일이나 격려하는 일이나 가르치는 일이나 그 외에 다른 영적 은사라도, 우리 자신과 우리의 은사는 다른 사람들에게 속한 것이라고 가르쳐 줍니다(5-8절).

THE DREAM TEAM

Together, friends Melanie and Trevor have hiked miles of mountain trails. Yet neither would be able to do so without the other. Melanie, born with spina bifida, uses a wheelchair. Trevor lost his sight to glaucoma. The duo realized they were one another’s perfect complement for enjoying the Colorado wilderness: As he walks the trails, Trevor carries Melanie on his back; meanwhile, she gives him verbal directions. They describe themselves as a “dream team.”

Paul describes believers in Jesus—the body of Christ—as a similar kind of “dream team.” He urged the Romans to recognize how their individual giftings benefited the larger group. Just as our physical bodies are made up of many parts, each with different functions, together we “form one [spiritual] body” and our gifts are meant to be given in service for the collective benefit of the church (ROMANS 12:5). Whether in the form of giving, encouraging, or teaching, or any of the other spiritual gifts, Paul instructs us to view ourselves and our gifts as belonging to all the others (VV. 5–8).

Melanie and Trevor aren’t focused on what they lack, nor are they prideful of what they do have in comparison to the other. Rather, they cheerfully give of their “gifts” in service to the other, recognizing how much they’re both bettered by their collaboration. May we too freely combine the gifts God has given us with those of our fellow members—for the sake of Christ.
