상상력 넘치는 믿음
“할아버지 저기 보세요! 저 나무들이 하나님을 향해 손을 흔들고 있어요!” 폭풍우가 오기 전 바람에 휘날리는 어린 자작나무를 보면서 소리 지르는 손자의 모습을 보면서 나는 미소를 지었습니다 그러면서 나 혼자 자문해봅니다. ‘나에게도 저런 상상력 넘치는 믿음이 있을까?’
시인 엘리자베스 바렛 브라우닝은 모세와 불타는 떨기나무 이야기를 떠올리며 이런 시를 썼습니다. “땅은 하늘로 가득 채워져 있고, 모든 덤불은 하나님과 불타오르고 있다. 그러나 보는 자만이 자신의 신을 벗는다.” 하나님께서 하신 일은 그분이 만드신 모든 경이로움 속에서 명백히 드러나 있으며 언젠가 이 땅이 새롭게 될 때 우리는 그 변화를 전에 없는 새로움으로 다시 보게 될 것입니다.
하나님께서는 이사야 선지자의 선포를 통해 이 날에 대해 분명히 말씀하십니다. “너희는 기쁨으로 나아가며 평안히 인도함을 받을 것이요 산들과 언덕들이 너희 앞에서 노래를 발하고 들의 모든 나무가 손뼉을 칠 것이며”(이사야 55:12). ‘노래하는 산?’ ‘손뼉 치는 나무?’ 안될 것 없지요! 바울은 이렇게 말했습니다. “그 바라는 것은 피조물도 썩어짐의 종 노릇 한 데서 해방되어 하나님의 자녀들의 영광의 자유에 이르는 것이니라”(로마서 8:21).
예수님께서는 돌들이 소리 지를 것이라고 말씀하신 바 있습니다(누가복음 19:40). 그리고 그 말씀은 구원받기 위해 주님께로 나아오는 사람들에게 일어날 일에 대한 이사야의 예언에 대한 화답입니다. 오직 하나님만 하실 수 있는 일을 상상하며 믿음으로 그분을 바라볼 때 우리는 영원히 계속되는 하나님의 경이로움을 보게 될 것입니다!

IMAGINATIVE FAITH
“Look, Papa! Those trees are waving at God!” As we watched young birches bending in the wind before an oncoming storm, my grandson’s excited observation made me smile. It also made me ask myself, Do I have that kind of imaginative faith?
Reflecting on the story of Moses and the burning bush, the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote that “Earth’s crammed with heaven, / And every common bush afire with God; / But only he who sees, takes off his shoes.” God’s handiwork is evident all around us in the wonders of what He has made, and one day, when the earth is made new, we’ll see it like never before.
God tells us about this day when He proclaims through the prophet Isaiah, “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands” (ISAIAH 55:12). Singing mountains? Clapping trees? Why not? Paul noted that “the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God” (ROMANS 8:21).
Jesus once spoke of stones crying out (LUKE 19:40), and His words echo Isaiah’s prophecy about what lies ahead for those who come to Him for salvation. When we look to Him with faith that imagines what only God can do, we’ll see His wonders continue forever!

배우며 사랑하며
스코틀랜드 그린녹에 있는 한 초등학교 교사 세 사람은 출산 휴가 중에 자신들의 아기를 두 주에 한 번씩 학교에 데려와 학생들과 놀게 했습니다. 아기들과 놀면서 학생들은 다른 사람과 공감하고 그들을 보살피며 배려하는 법을 배울 수 있었습니다. 한 선생님의 말을 빌리면, 종종
“약간 다루기 힘든” 학생들이 그런 것들을 가장 잘 받아들인다고 합니다. “그들은 종종 일대일로 수업해야 하는 학생들이에요.” 그런 학생들은 “아기를 돌보는 일이 얼마나 힘든지” 그리고 “서로의 감정에 대해서도 더 많이” 배우게 됩니다.
아기를 통해 다른 사람을 돌보는 법을 배우는 것은 예수 믿는 성도들에게는 처음 듣는 이야기가 아닙니다. 우리는 아기 예수로 오신 분을 압니다. 예수님의 탄생은 돌보는 인간관계에 대해 우리가 알고 있던 모든 것을 바꾸어 놓았습니다. 그리스도의 탄생을 가장 먼저 알게 된 사람들은 힘없고 연약한 양들을 돌보는 변변치 않는 일을 하는 목자들이었습니다. 나중에 어린아이들을 예수님께 데려 왔을 때 예수님은 아이들을 성가시게 여겼던 제자들의 생각을 고쳐주셨습니다. “어린 아이들이 내게 오는 것을 용납하고 금하지 말라 하나님의 나라가 이런 자의 것이니라”(마가복음 10:14).
예수님은 “그 어린 아이들을 안고 그들을 안수하시고 축복하셨습니다” (16절). 때로 주님께 “다루기 어려운” 아이인 우리 또한 성가신 사람들이라 여겨질 수 있습니다. 그러나 아기로 오신 그리스도께서는 오히려 사랑으로 우리를 받아 주십니다. 그렇게 함으로써 사랑스러운 아기와 모든 사람을 보살피는 힘을 우리에게 가르쳐 주십니다.

LEARNING AND LOVING
At a primary school in Greenock, Scotland, three teachers on maternity leave brought their babies to school every two weeks to interact with schoolchildren. Playtime with babies teaches children empathy, or care and feeling for others. Often, the most receptive are the tudents who are “a little challenging,” as one teacher put it. “It’s often [schoolchildren] who interact more on a one-to-one level.” They learn “how much hard work it is to take care of a child,” and “more about each other’s feelings as well.”
Learning from an infant to care about others isn’t a new idea to believers in Jesus. We know the One who came as the baby Jesus. His birth changed everything we understand about caring relationships. The first to learn of Christ’s birth were shepherds, a humble profession involving care of weak and vulnerable sheep. Later, when children were brought to Jesus, He corrected disciples who thought children unworthy. “Let the little children come to me,” he said, “and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (MARK 10:14).
Jesus “took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them” (V. 16). In our own lives, as His sometimes “challenging” children, we could be considered unworthy too. Instead, as the One who came as a child, Christ accepts us with His love—thereby teaching us the caring power of loving babies and all people. - PATRICIA RAYBON

2021년 8월 테네시주 웨이벌리에는 예보의 3배가 넘는 기록적인 폭우가 내렸습니다. 강력한 폭풍우로 20명이 목숨을 잃었고 수백 채의 집이 파손되었습니다. 그때 헬리콥터 조종사 조엘 보이어스의 열정과 구조 기술이 없었다면 인명 피해가 훨씬 더 컸을 것입니다.
그 조종사는 사랑하는 가족을 걱정하는 한 여성의 전화를 받고 비행을 했습니다. 보이어스는 불에 탄 집과 나무에 걸려있는 자동차를 보았고, 그것들 말고는 “내 아래에는 진흙탕과 거친 물 밖에 없었다”라고 했습니다. 그럼에도 그 조종사는 용기를 내어 계속해서 헬리콥터로 자기들 집 지붕 위에 올라와 있는 사람들을 12명이나 구조했습니다.
우리가 삶에서 적지 않게 마주치는 소용돌이치는 홍수는 이루 말할 수 없이 굉장하지요! 불확실하고 불안정한 나날을 사는 우리는 정신적으로, 감정적으로, 그리고 영적으로“감당할 수 없을 만큼” 압도되어 불안해할 수 있습니다. 그러나 절망할 필요는 없습니다.
시편 18편을 보면 다윗의 원수는 많았고 강했습니다. 그러나 그의 하나님은 더 위대했습니다. ‘얼마나 위대하셨나요?’ 너무나 위대하고 강하신 (1절) 하나님을 묘사하기 위해 다윗은 여러 가지 비유 (2절) 를 사용했습니다. 하나님은 깊은 물과 강한 원수들에게서 건져 내실 수 있을 만큼 위대했습니다 (16-17절) . ‘얼마나 위대하신가요?’ 삶에서 우리를 덮친 “물살”의 양과 깊이에 관계없이 예수님의 이름으로 그분께 부르짖을 때 구원해 주실 만큼 충분히 위대하십니다 (3절) .

DEEP-WATER RESCUE
A record rainfall more than tripled what was forecasted in Waverly, Tennessee, in August 2021. In the wake of the powerful storm, twenty people lost their lives and hundreds of homes were destroyed. Had it not been for the compassion and skill of helicopter pilot Joel Boyers, the loss of human life would’ve been even greater.
The pilot took flight in response to a phone call from a woman who was concerned about her loved ones. In addition to seeing houses on fire and cars in trees, Boyers noted, “It was nothing but [muddy], raging water below me.” The pilot, however, bravely proceeded to rescue twelve people from the roofs of their homes.
More often than not in life, the swirling floods we face aren’t literal—but oh, how real! In days of uncertainty and instability, we can feel overwhelmed, unsafe—“in over our heads” mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. But we don’t need to despair.
In Psalm 18, we read how David’s enemies were many and mighty, but his God was greater. How great? So great and powerful (V. 1) that he used multiple metaphors (V. 2) to describe Him. God was mighty enough to rescue from deep waters and strong enemies (VV. 16–17) . How great? Great enough for us to call upon Him in the name of Jesus, regardless of the volume and depth of the “waters” surrounding us in life (V. 3) . - ARTHUR JACKSON

할렐루야!
놀랍게도 작곡가 헨델이 ‘메시아’ 오라토리오를 관현악곡으로 작곡하는데 불과 24일 밖에 걸리지 않았습니다. 오늘날 전 세계에서 해마다 수천 번씩 연주되는 가장 유명한 음악 작품입니다. 이 웅장한 음악은 곡을 시작해서 거의 두 시간이 지나서야 이 오라토리오의 가장 유명한 부분 “할렐루야 합창”이 나오면서 클라이맥스를 이룹니다.
트럼펫과 팀파니가 합창의 시작을 알리면 합창단이 “세세토록 왕 노릇하시리로다”라는 요한계시록 11장 15절의 가사를 교대로 각 파트가 노래하며 합창이 진행됩니다. 이것은 예수님과 함께 할 영원한 천국을 소망하는 승리의 선언입니다.

HALLELUJAH!
Astonishingly, it took Handel only twenty-four days to write the orchestral music for the Messiah oratorio—today perhaps the world’s most famous musical composition, one performed thousands of times every year around the world. The magnificent work reaches its climax nearly two hours after it begins with the most famous part of the oratorio, the “Hallelujah Chorus.”
As the trumpets and timpani announce the beginning of the chorus, voices layer on top of each other as the choir sings the words of Revelation 11:15: “And he shall reign for ever and ever.” It’s a triumphant declaration of the hope of eternity in heaven with Jesus.
Many of the words in Messiah come from the book of Revelation, the apostle John’s account of a vision he had near the end of his life describing events culminating with the return of Christ. In Revelation, John returned again and again to the theme of the return of the resurrected Jesus to earth—when there would be great rejoicing with the sound of choirs (19:1–8) . The world will rejoice because Jesus will have defeated the powers of darkness and death and established a kingdom of peace.

WHERE I BELONG
At the end of a meal to mark Passover, a traditional Jewish holiday that celebrates and remembers the greatness of God’s saving work, church members expressed their joy by dancing together in a circle. Barry stood back, watching with a huge smile. He remarked how much he loved these occasions, saying,“This is my family now. This is my community. I’ve found somewhere where I know I can love and be loved . . . where I belong.”
In his childhood, Barry suffered cruel emotional and physical abuse, robbing him of his joy. But his local church welcomed him and introduced him to Jesus. Finding their unity and joy infectious, he began following Christ and felt loved and accepted.
In Psalm 133, King David used powerful images to illustrate the far-reaching effects of the “good and pleasant” unity of God’s people. He said it’s like someone who is anointed with precious oil, the liquid running down over their collar (V. 2). This anointing was common in the ancient world, sometimes as a greeting when one entered a home. David also compared this unity to the dew that falls on the mountain bringing life and blessing (V. 3).
Oil releases a fragrance that fills a room and dew brings moisture to dry places. Unity too has good and pleasant effects such as welcoming those who are alone. Let’s seek to be united in Christ so that God can bring about good through us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

A HOUSE UNDIVIDED
On June 16, 1858, as the newly nominated Republican candidate for the US Senate from Illinois, Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous “House Divided” speech, which highlighted the tensions between various factions in America regarding slavery. It caused a stir among Lincoln’s friends and foes. Lincoln felt it was important to use the “house divided” figure of speech which Jesus used in Matthew 12:25 because it was widely known and simply expressed. He used this metaphor “so it would strike home to the minds of men in order to rouse them to the peril of the times.”
While a divided house can’t stand, the implied opposite can—an undivided house stands unified. In principle, that’s what the household of God is designed to be (EPHESIANS 2:19). Though made up of people from various backgrounds, together we’ve been reconciled to God (and each other) through Jesus’ death on the cross (VV. 14–16). In view of this truth (SEE EPHESIANS 3), Paul offers this instruction to believers in Jesus: “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (4:3).
Today, when heightened tensions threaten to divide people who are otherwise united, such as our families and fellow believers, God can give the wisdom and strength needed to keep unity with one another through the help of the Spirit. This will cause us to be light in a dark, divided world.- ARTHUR JACKSON

고래 이야기
마이클이 바닷물 속에 들어가 바닷가재를 잡는 중 혹등고래가 나타나 그를 집어삼켜버렸습니다. 자신을 쥐어짜듯 압박해 오는 고래의 근육을 어둠 속에서 밀어내면서 이제 죽었다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 고래는 바닷가재 잡는 어부는 취향이 아니었는지 30초 만에 마이클을 공중으로 뱉어 냈습니다. 놀랍게도 마이클의 뼈는 하나도 부러지지 않았습니다. 단지 몸 전체에 넓게 자리 잡은 멍들과 굉장한 고래 이야기 하나가 남았을 뿐이었습니다.
고래에 잡혀 먹힌 사람은 그가 처음은 아니었습니다. “큰 물고기” (요나 1:17)가 요나를 삼켰고 그 뱃속에서 3일 동안 있었습니다(1:17; 2:10). 우연히 잡혀 먹힌 마이클과 달리 요나는 이스라엘의 원수들을 미워하여 그들이 회개하는 것을 원하지 않았기 때문에 삼켜져 버린 것입니다. 하나님께서 요나에게 니느웨로 가서 외치라고 하셨을 때 그는 다른 방향으로 가는 배를 탔습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그를 경고하기 위해 고래만한 큰 물고기를 보내셨습니다.

WHALE OF A STORY
Michael was diving for lobster when a humpback whale caught him in its mouth. He pushed back in the darkness as the whale’s muscles squeezed against him. He thought he was done. But whales don’t prefer lobstermen, and thirty seconds later the whale spit Michael into the air. Amazingly, Michael had no broken bones—only extensive bruises and one whale of a story.
He wasn’t the first. Jonah was swallowed by “a huge fish” (JONAH 1:17), and he stayed in its belly for three days before being vomited onto land (1:17; 2:10). Unlike Michael, who was caught by accident, Jonah was swallowed because he hated Israel’s enemies and didn’t want them to repent. When God told Jonah to preach in Nineveh, he caught a boat going the other way. So God sent a whale-sized fish to get his attention.
I appreciate why Jonah hated the Assyrians. They’d harassed Israel in the past, and within fifty years they’d carry the northern tribes into captivity where they’d vanish forever. Jonah was understandably offended that Assyria might be forgiven.
But Jonah was more loyal to the people of God than to the God of all people. God loved Israel’s enemies and wanted to save them. He loves our enemies and wants to save them. With the wind of the Spirit at our backs, let’s sail toward them with the good news of Jesus. - MIKE WITTMER

주님의 이름을 믿음
어렸을 때 학교에 가는 것이 두려웠던 때가 있었습니다. 몇몇 여자아이들이 심한 장난을 치며 나를 괴롭혔기 때문입니다. 그래서 쉬는 시간이 되면 도서관에 숨어서 기독교 동화책 시리즈를 읽곤 했습니다. 나는 “예수” 라는 이름을 처음 읽었을 때를 기억합니다. 왜 그랬는지 아무튼 예수라는 말이 나를 사랑하는 사람의 이름이라는 것을 알았습니다. 그 후 몇 달 동안 나는 닥쳐올 괴롭힘이 두려워 학교 문에 들어갈 때마다 “예수님, 저를 보호해 주세요”라고 기도했습니다. 주님이 나를 지켜보고 계시다는 것을 알았기에 더 강하고 침착해졌습니다. 시간이 지나면서 여자아이들은 나를 괴롭히다 못해 싫증을 내고 그만두었습니다.

TRUST IN HIS NAME
As a child, there was a time I dreaded going to school. Some girls were bullying me by subjecting me to cruel pranks. So during recess, I’d take refuge in the library, where I read a series of Christian storybooks. I remember the first time I read the name “Jesus.” Somehow, I knew that this was the name of someone who loved me. In the months that followed, whenever I’d enter school fearful of the torment that lay ahead, I’d pray, “Jesus, protect me.” I’d feel stronger and calmer, knowing He was watching over me. In time, the girls simply grew tired of bullying me and stopped.
Many years have passed, and trusting His name continues to sustain me through difficult times. Trusting His name is believing that what He says about His character is true, allowing me to rest in Him.
David, too, knew the security of trusting in God’s name. When he wrote Psalm 9, he’d already experienced God as the all-powerful ruler who is just and faithful (VV. 7–8, 10, 16). David thus showed his trust in God’s name by going into battle against his enemies, trusting not his weapons or military skill, but in God ultimately coming through for him as “a refuge for the oppressed” (V. 9).\
As a little girl, I called on His name and experienced how He lived up to it. May we always trust His name—Jesus—the name of the One that loves us. - KAREN HUANG

그렉 로드리게즈는 2001년 9월 11일 세계무역센터가 무너졌을 때 잔해 속에서 사망한 희생자 중 한 사람이었습니다. 그의 어머니 필리스와 아버지는 몹시 슬펐지만 이러한 끔찍한 공격에 어떻게 반응해야 할지 심사숙고했습니다. 2002년에 필리스는 테러리스트를 도운 혐의로 기소된 한 남성의 어머니인 아이챠 엘 와피를 만났습니다. 필리스는 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 두 팔을 벌려 그 어머니에게 다가갔습니다. 우리는 서로 껴안고 울었어요... 아이챠와 나 사이에는 직접적인 연결고리가 있었습니다... 우리 둘 다 아들로 인해 고통을 받았던 것이지요.”

COMPASSION OVER BITTERNESS
When the World Trade Center towers fell on September 11, 2001, Greg Rodriguez was one of the victims who died in the wreckage. As his mother, Phyllis, and his father grieved, they also carefully considered their response to such a horrific attack. In 2002, Phyllis met Aicha el-Wafe, the mother of one of the men accused of helping the terrorists. Phyllis said she “approached her and opened my arms. We embraced and cried. . . . For Aicha and me, there was an immediate bonding. . . . We both suffered on account of our sons.”
Phyllis met Aicha amid shared pain and sorrow. Phyllis believed that fury over her son’s death, appropriate as it was, could not heal her anguish. Listening to Aicha’s family story, Phyllis felt compassion, resisting the temptation to view them merely as enemies. She desired justice, but believed we must release the temptation to seek revenge that often grips us when we’ve been wronged.
The apostle Paul shared this conviction, admonishing us to “get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger . . . along with every form of malice” (EPHESIANS 4:31). As we relinquish these destructive powers, God’s Spirit fills us with new perspective. “Be kind and compassionate to one another,” Paul says (V. 32). It’s possible to work for wrongs to be made right while also refusing rageful vengeance. May the Spirit help us show compassion that overcomes bitterness. - WINN COLLIER

UNCOMMON ERA
Despite living much of his life as a pagan, the Roman emperor Constantine (AD 272–337) implemented reforms that stopped the systematic persecution of Christians. He also instituted the calendar we use, dividing all of history into bc (before Christ) and ad (anno Domini, or “in the year of the Lord”).
A move to secularize this system has changed the labels to ce (Common Era) and bce (before the Common Era). Some people point to this as yet another example of how the world keeps God out.
But God hasn’t gone anywhere. Regardless of the name, our calendar still centers itself around the reality of Jesus’ life on earth.
In the Bible, the book of Esther is unusual in that it contains no specific mention of God. Yet the story it tells is one of God’s deliverance. Banished from their homeland, the Jewish people lived in a country indifferent to Him. A powerful government official wanted to kill them all (ESTHER 3:8–9, 12–14). Yet through Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai, God delivered His people, a story still celebrated to this day in the Jewish holiday of Purim (9:20–32).
Regardless of how the world chooses to respond to Him now, Jesus changed everything. He introduced us to an uncommon era—one full of genuine hope and promise. All we need to do is look around us. We’ll see Him. - TIM GUSTAFSON
