천국에서 다시 만남

어머니의 부고 기사를 쓸 때, ‘죽었다’는 표현은 우리에게 약속된 천국에 가서 다시 만난다는 소망을 생각하면 마지막이라는 너무 부정적인 느낌이 들었습니다. 그래서, 나는 이렇게 썼습니다. “어머니가 예수님의 팔에 안기셨습니다.” 그래도 아직 나는 최근에 찍은, 어머니가 빠진 가족사진들을 보고 며칠 동안 슬픔에 잠기기도 합니다. 그런데 얼마 전, 가족 초상화에 돌아가신 가족들을 포함해 그리는 화가를 만났습니다. 그 화가는 우리보다 먼저 간 사랑하는 가족들의 사진을 보고 살아 있는 가족들과 함께 그들을 그려 넣습니다. 그 화가는 천국 재회에 대한 하나님의 약속을 붓으로 표현하는 것입니다. 내 옆에서 웃는 어머니를 다시 볼 생각에 감사의 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

바울 사도는 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 “소망 없는 다른 이와 같이” (데살로니가전서 4:13) 슬퍼할 필요가 없다고 말합니다. “우리가 예수께서 죽으셨다가 다시 살아나심을 믿을진대 이와 같이 예수 안에서 자는 자들도 하나님이 그와 함께 데리고 오시리라”(14절). 바울 사도는 예수님의 재림을 인정하고 모든 신자가 예수님과 다시 만날 것이라고 선포합니다(17절).

사랑하는 가족을 잃고 슬퍼할 때 천국에서 다시 만나게 되리라는 하나님의 약속으로 우리는 위로를 받습니다. 또한 예수님이 이 땅에 다시 오시거나 우리를 주님의 품으로 부르실 때까지 영생을 기대함으로 우리는 부활하신 왕과의 약속된 미래에 대한 영원한 소망을 가집니다.

A HEAVENLY REUNION

When writing my mom’s obituary, I felt that the word died seemed too final for the hope I had in our promised reunion in heaven. So, I wrote: “She was welcomed into the arms of Jesus.” Still, some days I grieve when looking at the more current family photos that don’t include my mom. Recently, though, I discovered a painter who creates family portraits to include those we’ve lost. The artist uses the photos of loved ones who have gone before us to paint them into the picture of the family. With strokes of a paintbrush, this artist represents God’s promise of a heavenly reunion. I shed grateful tears at the thought of seeing my mom smiling by my side again.

The apostle Paul affirms that believers in Jesus don’t have to grieve “like the rest of mankind” (1 THESSALONIANS 4:13). “We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him” (V. 14). Paul acknowledges Jesus’ second coming and proclaims that all believers will be reunited with Jesus (V. 17).

God’s promise of a heavenly reunion can comfort us when we’re grieving the loss of a loved one who has trusted Jesus. Our promised future with our risen King also provides enduring hope when we face our own immortality, until the day Jesus comes or calls us home. - XOCHITL DIXON

집을 짓는다는 것

1889년 미국에서 가장 야심 찬 개인주택 건설 프로젝트가 시작 되었습니다. 공사 현장에서는 하루에 벽돌 약 32,000장이 생산 되었습니다. 6년이나 걸려 지은 이 집은 조지 밴더빌트 2세의 “여름 별장”입니다. 그 결과 노스캐롤라이나 주 애슈빌의 빌트모어 에스테이트가 생겼습니다. 현재까지도 이 집은 178,926 평방피트(16,226 제곱미터)의 엄청난 면적에 250개의 방(35개의 침실과 43개의 욕실 포함)이 있는 미국에서 가장 큰 개인주택으로 남아 있습니다.

BUILDING THE HOUSE

In 1889, the most ambitious private home construction project in the United States began. On-site manufacturing produced some 32,000 bricks a day. The work continued until the completion of George Vanderbilt II’s “summer house”—six years later. The result was the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. To this day, it remains the largest private residence in America, with 250 rooms (including 35 bedrooms and 43 bathrooms) consuming a staggering 178,926 square feet (16,226 square meters) of floor space.

This project, ambitious as it was, was nothing compared to the “building” intentions Jesus proclaimed to His disciples in Matthew 16. After Peter had confirmed that Jesus is “the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (V. 16), Jesus declared, “I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (V. 18). While theologians debate the identity of the “rock,” there’s no debate about Jesus’ intentions. He would build His church to stretch to the ends of the earth (MATTHEW 28:19–20), including people from every nation and ethnic group from around the globe (REVELATION 5:9).

The cost of this building project? The sacrifice of Jesus’ own blood on the cross (ACTS 20:28). As members of His “building” (EPHESIANS 2:21), purchased at so great a price, may we celebrate His loving sacrifice and join Him in this great mission. - BILL CROWDER

피난처 찾기

아내와 나는 큰 덧창들과 두꺼운 돌담으로 둘러싸인 아름답고 오래된 해변 호텔에 머물렀습니다. 어느 날 오후, 태풍이 그 지역을 휩쓸고 지나가며 바다를 마구 휘저어 놓았고, 마치 성난 사람이 주먹으로 문을 마구 두드리는 것처럼 바람이 우리 호텔 창문을 두들겼습니다. 그러나
우리는 평온했습니다. 호텔의 담은 아주 견고했고, 건물의 기초 또한 아주 단단했으니까요! 밖에서 폭풍우가 몰아치는 동안, 우리의 방은 피난처였습니다.

피난처는 성경의 중요한 주제인데, 하나님 자신이 먼저 피난처가 되십니다. 이사야는 하나님에 대해 말하면서, “빈궁한 자의 요새이시며, 환난 당한 가난한 자의 요새이시며, 폭풍 중의 피난처”(이사야 25:4)이시라고 했습니다. 또한 피난처는 이스라엘의 고대 도피성(민수기 35:6)이나 도움이 필요한 “이방인” 들을 대접하는(신명기 10:19) 것 같이, 하나님의 백성들이 제공해야 했고 또 제공해야 하는 것이기도 합니다. 같은 원리로 오늘날 인도주의적 위기가 닥쳤을 때, 우리도 그렇게 도울 수 있습니다. 이런 상황에 처할 때, 피난처 되시는 하나님께서 우리와 그의 백성들을 사용하셔서 연약한 사람들이 안전한 곳을 찾도록 도울 수 있기를 기도합니다.

FINDING REFUGE

My wife and I once stayed in a lovely old seaside hotel with large sash windows and thick stone walls. One afternoon, a storm ripped through the region, churning up the sea and pounding our windows like angry fists on a door. Yet we were at peace. Those walls were so strong, and the hotel’s foundations so solid! While storms raged outside, our room was a refuge.

Refuge is an important theme in Scripture, starting with God Himself. “You have been a refuge for the poor,” Isaiah says of God, “a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm” (ISAIAH 25:4). In addition, refuge is something God’s people were and are to provide, whether through Israel’s ancient cities of refuge (NUMBERS 35:6) or by offering hospitality to “foreigners” in need (DEUTERONOMY 10:19). These same principles can guide us today when humanitarian crises hit our world. In such times, we pray that the God of refuge would use us, His people, to help the vulnerable find safety.

The storm that hit our hotel was gone the following morning, leaving us with a calm sea and a warm sun that made the seagulls glow. It’s an image I hold on to as I think of those facing natural disasters or fleeing “ruthless” regimes (ISAIAH 25:4): that the God of refuge would empower us to help them find safety now and a brighter tomorrow. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

담에 생긴 구멍

무엇인가가 내 꽃들을 먹고 있었습니다. 어제까지만 해도 자랑스럽게 꽃을 피워 머리를 꼿꼿이 치켜세우고 있었는데 이제 꽃은 없어지고 줄기만 남았습니다. 나는 마당 주변을 살펴보다가 나무 담장에 토끼 한 마리가 드나들 정도의 구멍을 발견했습니다. 토끼들은 귀엽지만 화단의 꽃들을 순식간에 잘라먹어 버릴 수 있는 성가신 동물입니다.

이것을 보면서 내 삶 가운데에도 하나님의 성품으로 피운 꽃들을 베어먹는 “침입자”가 있을지도 모른다는 의문이 들었습니다. 잠언 25장 28절은 “자기의 마음을 제어하지 아니하는 자는 성읍이 무너지고 성벽이 없는 것과 같으니라” 고 말합니다. 고대에는 도시의 성벽이 적의 침략으로부터 보호해주는 역할을 했습니다. 성벽에 생긴 아주 작은 구멍일지라도, 이를 통해 도시 전체가 적의 공격에 노출될 수 있었습니다.

잠언의 많은 구절들은 절제에 관한 내용입니다. 현자는 “꿀을 보거든 족하리만큼 먹으라”고 말합니다(25:16). 절제는 우리를 인도하는 성령의 열매이며, 성급함이나 시기, 탐심 그리고 다른 해로운 것들이 침입하여 우리 삶 가운데 맺은 성령의 열매를(갈라디아서 5:22-23 참조) 파괴하지 못하도록 보호해 줍니다. 절제는 건강한 마음가짐으로 우리 삶의 담벼락에 생긴 구멍들을 찾아내고, 또 계속 고치도록 해줍니다.

내 삶의 주위를 둘러보면, 때때로 취약한 구멍을 볼 수 있습니다. 자꾸만 유혹에 넘어가는 곳, 즉 조바심의 영역입니다. 그러한 침입자로부터 자신을 보호하기 위해 나의 삶에서 하나님의 건전한 절제가 얼마나 필요한지요!

A HOLE IN THE WALL

Something was eating my flowers. The day before, blooms proudly lifted their heads. Now they were headless stems. I prowled the perimeter of my yard and discovered a rabbitsized hole in my wooden fence. Bunnies are cute, but the pesky animals can mow down a garden of flowers in minutes.

I wonder, might there be “intruders” shearing off the blooms of God’s character in my life? Proverbs 25:28 says, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks selfcontrol.” In ancient days, the wall of the city protected it against invasion from enemies. Even a small opening in a wall meant that the entire city lay open to attack.

So many of the proverbs are about self-control. “If you find honey, eat just enough,” wrote the wise man (25:16). Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit that guards us, protecting us from losing ground to impatience, bitterness, greed, and other pests that can intrude and destroy God’s harvest in our lives (SEE GALATIANS 5:22–23). Self-control is a healthy-mindedness that watches for the holes in the walls of our lives and keeps them patched.

When I inspect the perimeter of my life, I can at times see vulnerable holes. A spot where I give in to temptation over and over. An area of impatience. Oh, how I need the healthy-minded self-control of God in my life to guard me from such intruders! - ELISA MORGAN

레고가 주는 교훈

LEGO LESSONS

Approximately ten Lego pieces are sold for every person on earth each year—more than seventy-five billion of the little plastic bricks. But if it wasn’t for the perseverance of Danish toymaker Ole Kirk Christiansen, there wouldn’t be any Legos to snap together.

Christiansen toiled away in Billund, Denmark, for decades before creating Leg Godt, which means “play well.” His workshop was destroyed by fire twice. He endured bankruptcy and a world war that caused a shortage of materials. Finally, in the late 1940s, he landed on the idea for self-locking plastic bricks. By the time Ole Kirk died in 1958, Legos was on the verge of becoming a household word.

Persevering in the challenges of work and life can be difficult. That’s also true in our spiritual life as we strive to grow to be more like Jesus. Trouble hits us, and we need God’s strength to persevere. James wrote: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial” (JAMES 1:12). Sometimes the trials we face are setbacks in relationships or finances or health. Sometimes they’re temptations that slow us down in our goal of honoring God with our lives.

But God promises wisdom for such times (V. 5), and He asks us to trust Him as He provides what we need (V. 6). Through it all, when we allow Him to help us persevere in honoring Him with our lives, we find true blessing (V. 12). - DAVE BRANON

1970년 덴마크를 방문했던 어떤 자동차 회사 임원은 이 지역 주민 한 사람이 1939년형 뷰익 듀얼 카얼 피에튼 차종을 소유하고 있음을 알게 되었습니다. 그 차종은 실제로 생산되지 않았기 때문에 그 차는 희귀한, 그야말로 세상에 단 하나뿐인 차였습니다. 그 차를 발견하고 기쁨에 찬 임원은 그것을 구입해서 자신의 시간과 돈을 들여 수리했습니다. 현재, 이 유일무이한 차는 세계적으로 유명한 클래식 자동차 컬렉션의 주요 전시물입니다.

REDISCOVERED

In 1970, a car executive visiting Denmark learned that a 1939 Buick Dual Cowl Phaeton was owned by a local resident. Since the car never actually went into production, it was a rare find— a one-of-kind vehicle. Delighted with the discovery, the executive bought the car and spent his time and money to have it restored. Currently, this unique car is featured in a world-renowned collection of classic vehicles.

Hidden treasures can take many forms, and in the book of 2 Chronicles we read about another discovery of a lost treasure. Eighteen years into his reign as king of Judah, Josiah began to repair the temple in Jerusalem. During the process, the priest Hilkiah found the “Book of the Law in the temple” (2 CHRONICLES 34:15). The Book of the Law, the first five books of the Old Testament, had likely been hidden away decades earlier to keep it safe from invading armies. Over time it had been simply forgotten.

When King Josiah was told about this discovery, he realized the importance of the find. Josiah called all the people together and read the entire Book of the Law so they could commit themselves to keep all that was written in it (VV. 30–31).

Still important for our lives today, we have the amazing blessing of access to all sixty-six books of the Bible, a treasure of infinite worth. - LISA M. SAMRA

룻이 시어머니 나오미를 돌보기로 결심했을 때 그녀는 익숙한 환경의 안정감을 뒤로하고 떠난 것입니다. 룻은 “가서 베는 자를 따라 밭에서 이삭을 주웠습니다”(룻기 2:3). 감독자는 지주인 보아스에게 룻이 “와서는 잠시 집에서 쉰 외에 지금까지 계속 하는 중이니이다”(7절)라고 보고했습니다. 룻은 자신이 나오미를 돌보듯이 자신을 돌봐줄 사람들과 안전한 거처를 얻었습니다 (8-9 절). 그리고 하나님은 보아스가 룻과 나오미에게 관대히 베풀도록 하셨습니다(14-16 절).

삶의 여러 환경들은 우리의 익숙한 환경을 훨씬 넘어 전혀 예기치 못한 곳으로 우리를 인도하기도 합니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님과, 또 서로서로와의 관계를 유지한다면, 하나님은 우리가 서로 의지하면서 사랑 안에 뿌리를 내리게 하실 것입니다.

ROOTED IN LOVE

I arrived at the cancer care center, where I’d be serving as my mom’s live-in caregiver, feeling alone and afraid. I’d left my family and support system more than 750 miles behind me. But before I could even touch my luggage, Frank, a man with a huge grin, offered to help. By the time we reached the sixth floor, I’d made plans to meet his wife, Lori, who cared for him during his treatments. The couple soon became like family as we leaned on God and each other. We laughed, vented, cried, and prayed together. Though we all felt displaced, our connection to God and each other kept us rooted in love as we supported one another.

When Ruth committed to caring for her mother-in-law, Naomi, she left the security of familiarity behind. Ruth “entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters” (RUTH 2:3). The overseer told the landowner, Boaz, that Ruth “came into the field” and “remained” working “except for a short rest in the shelter” (V. 7). Ruth found a safe place with people willing to care for her as she cared for Naomi (VV. 8–9). And God provided for Ruth and Naomi though Boaz’s generosity (VV. 14–16).

Life’s circumstances can provide roads to unexpected places far beyond our comfort zones. As we remain connected to God and each other, He’ll keep us rooted in love as we support one another. - XOCHITL DIXON

촛불 켜기

정오였지만 해는 보이지 않았습니다. 1780년 5월 19일 아침 뉴잉글랜드에 암흑이 시작되어 몇 시간 동안 지속되었습니다. 이 아주 이상한 어두움은 캐나다의 대규모 산불로 생긴 짙은 연기구름 때문에 그런 것 같았지만, 많은 사람들은 최후 심판의 날이 온 것은 아닐까 생각했습니다.

주님이 재림하시는 날까지 하나님이 맡기신 일을 충실하게 수행하려는 데븐포트의 간절한 마음은 예수님이 하신 다음 말씀을 실제로 보여주고 있습니다. “허리에 띠를 띠고 등불을 켜고 서 있으라 너희는 마치 그 주인이 혼인 집에서 돌아와 문을 두드리면 곧 열어 주려고 기다리는 사람과 같이 되라 주인이 와서 깨어 있는 것을 보면 그 종들은 복이 있으리로다”(누가복음 12:35-37).

밤이든 낮이든 우리의 구세주를 섬기는 것은 항상 좋은 일입니다. 어두움이 밀어닥쳐도 주님을 기다리는 모든 사람에게 하신 주님의 약속은 지켜질 것입니다. 어둠 속의 촛불처럼 우리의 “빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 보게”(마태복음 5:16) 하며 주님을 사랑하고 섬기게 하소서.

LIGHTING CANDLES

It was noon, but the sun wasn’t visible. New England’s Dark Day began the morning of May 19, 1780, and lasted for hours. The cause of the surreal darkness was likely heavy clouds of smoke from massive wildfires in Canada, but many wondered if it might be judgment day.

The Connecticut governor’s council (senate) was in session, and when some considered adjourning because of the darkness, Abraham Davenport responded, “I am against adjournment. The day of judgment is either approaching, or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for an adjournment; if it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish therefore that candles may be brought.”

Davenport’s desire to be found faithfully performing the work God had given him to do on the day He returns is illustrative of Jesus’ words: “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes” (LUKE 12:35–37).

Day or night, it’s always good to serve our Savior. Even when darkness encroaches, His promises for all who look forward to Him will stand. Like candles in the darkness, may our “light shine before others, that they may see” (MATTHEW 5:16) and love and serve Him too.

우리가 함께 모일 때

세계 행복보고서에 따르면 덴마크는 가장 행복한 국가 중 하나입니다. 덴마크 사람들은 친구들과 함께 모여서 따뜻한 음료와 풍성한 음식을 나누며 길고 어두운 겨울을 견딥니다. 그런 자리에서 느끼는 감정을 표현하는 단어가 ‘후가’입니다. 그들보다 더 남쪽에 사는 사람들만큼 누릴 수 없는 부족한 햇볕을 후가가 대신해 줍니다. 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 소박한 식탁에 둘러앉는 것만으로도 그들의 마음은 푸근해지니까요.

히브리서 기자는 신도들에게 공동체를 이루어 함께 모이라고 권면합니다. 그리스도를 따르는 사람들이 믿음 안에서 인내해야 하는, 겨울 날씨보다 훨씬 더 심각하고 힘든 날들이 있을 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 우리가 구세주를 믿으면 하나님께서 우리를 받아주신다고 예수님이 확실히 말씀해주셨지만, 수치심이나 의심이 들거나 실제로 어떤 반대에 부딪치면 그것들과 싸워야 할지 모릅니다. 그러나 우리가 함께 모인다면 서로 격려할 수 있는 특권을 갖습니다. 우리가 서로 동반자라면 “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하며”(히브리서 10:24) 믿음을 굳게 세울 수 있습니다.

물론 친구들과 함께 한다고 해서 “행복보고서”의 순위가 올라간다는 보장은 없습니다. 다만 이것은 생활 속에 흔히 겪는 좌절감을 믿음으로 견디게 해주는 성경이 알려주는 방법입니다. 이것은 우리가 교회라는 공동체를 추구하는 아주 훌륭한 이유입니다! 혹은, 서로의 마음을 풍성하게 하기 위해 덴마크 사람들처럼 그저 소박하게 각자의 집을 개방하는 이유이기도 합니다.

WHEN WE GATHER TOGETHER

Denmark is among the happiest countries in the world, according to the World Happiness Report. The Danes weather their lengthy, dark winters by gathering with friends to share a warm drink or a gracious meal. The word they use for the feelings associated with those moments is hygge (hoo-gah). Hygge helps them offset the impact of enjoying less sunlight than their counterparts at lower latitudes. By circling around a simple table with loved ones, their hearts are nourished.

The writer of Hebrews encourages gathering together as a community. He acknowledges that there will be difficult days—with challenges far more significant than the weather—requiring those who follow Christ to persevere in faith. Though Jesus has made certain our acceptance by God through our faith in the Savior, we may struggle against shame or doubt or real opposition. By gathering together, we have the privilege of encouraging one another. When we’re sharing company, we’re able to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds,” which bolsters our faith (HEBREWS 10:24).

Gathering with friends doesn’t assure us of a ranking on a “happiness report.” It is, however, something the Bible offers as a means to bear us up in faith under the common frustrations of life. What a wonderful reason to seek out the community of a church! Or to open our homes—with an attitude of Danish simplicity—to nourish one another’s hearts. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

아는 것이 상처가 될 때

잭 엘더와 그의 친구들이 그랜드 캐니언을 관통하는 25일간의 래프팅을 마치고 뭍으로 올라오자 그들이 탔던 보트를 회수하러 온 남자가 코로나바이러스에 대해 이야기해주었습니다. 그들은 그가 농담한다고 생각했지만 협곡을 벗어나자 그들의 휴대폰에서 부모님들이 보내온 긴급 메시지가 떴습니다. 잭과 친구들은 충격에 빠져 다시 강으로 돌아가 지금 알게 된 현실에서 벗어나고 싶었습니다.

타락한 이 세상에서는 아는 것이 고통을 가져다 줄 때가 많습니다. 전도서의 현자는 “지혜가 많으면 번뇌도 많으니 지식을 더하는 자는 근심을 더하느니라”(1:18)라고 하였습니다. 어린아이가 알지 못하기 때문에 누리는 행복을 부러워해보지 않은 어른이 있을까요? 아이는 인종차별과 폭력, 암을 아직 모릅니다. 우리는 성인이 되어 우리의 약점과 악함을 알기 전에, 그리고 삼촌은 왜 그렇게 술을 많이 마시는지, 부모님이 왜 이혼했는지 등과 같은 가족의 비밀을 몰랐을 때에 더 행복하지 않았던가요?

아는 것에서 오는 고통은 원한다고 피할 수 없습니다. 일단 알게 되면 모른 척해도 소용없습니다. 그러나 우리를 인내하게 하고 나아가 더 좋아지게 하는 차원 높은 앎이 있습니다. 그것은 예수님은 하나님의 말씀이시고 우리의 어둠을 비치는 빛이시라는(요한복음 1:1-5) 것입니다. 예수님은 “하나님으로부터 나와서 우리에게 지혜와 의로움과 거룩함과 구원함이 되셨습니다”(고린도전서 1:30). 당신이 고통을 느낀다면 예수님께로 달려가십시오. 예수님은 당신을 아시고 돌보아 주십니다.

WHEN KNOWLEDGE HURTS

Zach Elder and his friends pulled up to shore after a twenty-five-day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. The man who came to retrieve their rafts told them about the COVID-19 virus. They thought he was joking. But as they left the canyon their phones pinged with their parents’ urgent messages. Zach and his friends were stunned. They wished they could return to the river and escape what they now knew.

In a fallen world, knowledge often brings pain. The wise Teacher of Ecclesiastes observed, “With much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief” (1:18). Who hasn’t envied a child’s blissful ignorance? She doesn’t yet know about racism, violence, and cancer. Weren’t we happier before we grew up and discerned our own weaknesses and vices? Before we learned our family’s secrets—why our uncle drinks heavily or what caused our parents’ divorce?

The pain from knowledge can’t be wished away. Once we know, it’s no use pretending we don’t. But there’s a higher knowledge that empowers us to endure, even thrive. Jesus is the Word of God, the light that shines in our darkness (JOHN 1:1–5). He “has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption” (1 CORINTHIANS 1:30). Your pain is your reason to run to Jesus. He knows you and cares for you.
