빛나는 방랑자

2020년 봄 밤하늘 아래 서퍼들이 샌디에이고의 해안을 따라 생명체에 의해 빛을 발하는 파도를 탔습니다. 이 빛의 향연은 식물성플랑크톤이라고 불리는 미세한 유기체들에 의해 발생 되었는데, 그 이름은 “방랑자” 또는 “떠돌이”를 의미하는 그리스 단어에서 유래된 것입니다. 낮 동안에 살아 있는 아주 작은 생명체들이 적조를 만들고 햇빛을 포집하여 그것을 화학 에너지로 바꾸었다가 어두울 때 파도가 생기면서 방해를 받으면 파란 빛을 만들어냅니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들도 적조류처럼 땅 위에서 방랑자나 떠돌이처럼 사는 천국 시민들입니다. 그러다가 잘 짜인 우리의 계획이 어려운 상황으로 방해받게 되면 성령님은 우리에게 세상의 빛이신 예수님처럼 반응할 수 있도록 능력 주셔서 어둠 속에서도 주님의 빛나는 성품을 발하게 하십니다. 바울 사도는 그리스도와 친밀한 것과, 그를 믿는 믿음에서 나오는 의보다 더 소중한 것은 없다고 말합니다(빌립보서 3:8-9). 바울은 예수님을 알고 그의 부활의 능력을 알게 되면 우리가 변화되며, 시련이 우리 삶을 거스를 때에 우리의 사는 모습과 대응하는 방법도 달라진다는 사실을 그의 삶으로 보여주었습니다(10-16절).

날마다 하나님의 아들 예수님과 함께 시간을 보내면 성령님이 우리에게 필요한 진리로 채우셔서, 우리가 이 땅에서의 모든 도전에 직면할 때 그리스도의 성품을 보여줄 수 있게 하십니다(17-21절). 하나님께서 우리를 본향으로 부르시거나 아니면 다시 오시는 그날까지, 우리는 어둠을 가르는 하나님의 사랑과 소망의 등불이 될 수 있습니다.

RADIANT DRIFTERS

Under the night sky in the spring of 2020, surfers rode bioluminescent waves along the coast of San Diego. These lightshows were caused by microscopic organisms called phytoplankton, a name derived from a Greek word meaning “wanderer” or “drifter.” During the day, the living organisms create red tides and capture sunlight that converts into chemical energy. When disturbed in the darkness, they produce an electric blue light.

Believers in Jesus are citizens of heaven who, much like the red-tide algae, live like wanderers or drifters on earth. When difficult circumstances disturb our well-laid plans, the Holy Spirit empowers us to respond like Jesus—the Light of the World—so we can reflect His radiant character in the darkness. According to Paul the apostle, nothing is more valuable than our intimacy with Christ and the righteousness that comes through our faith in Him (PHILIPPIANS 3:8–9). His life proved that knowing Jesus and the power of His resurrection changes us, impacting the way we live and the way we respond when trials disrupt our lives (VV. 10–16).

When we spend time with God’s Son daily, the Holy Spirit equips us with the truth we need—enabling us to face every challenge on this earth in ways that reflect Christ’s character (VV. 17–21). We can be beacons of God’s love and hope, cutting through the darkness until the day He calls us home or comes again.

쇠처럼 강한 것

철갑딱정벌레는 포식자로부터 자신을 보호하는 튼튼한 외관을 갖고 있습니다. 그런데 그 중 특별한 한 종류에게는 외부의 압력에 견딜 수 있는 ‘아주 특별한’ 능력이 있습니다. 그 곤충의 딱딱한 외부 껍질은 압력에 균열되지 않고 늘어나서 함께 결합되며, 등이 평평하고 옆모습이 낮아서 부러지지 않고 잘 버팁니다. 과학 실험을 통해 그 곤충은 자신의 몸무게의 거의 4만 배에 달하는 압력에도 살아남을 수 있다는 것을 보여주었습니다.

하나님이 이 곤충을 특별히 강하게 만드신 것처럼 예레미야에게도 그런 끈질긴 회복력을 주셨습니다. 선지자가 이스라엘에 달갑지 않은 메시지를 전함으로 심한 공격을 받을 것을 아신 하나님은 그를 “쇠기둥과 놋성벽”으로 만들겠다고 약속하셨습니다(예레미야 1:18). 선지자는 납작해지거나 부숴지거나 제압당하지도 않고, 그의 예언은 하나님의 임재와 구원의 능력으로 굳건히 서게 되었습니다.

예레미야는 평생 동안 억울한 누명을 쓰고 체포되고 재판을 받고 매를 맞고 투옥되고 우물에 던져졌지만 그래도 살아남았습니다. 예레미야는 내면의 고통의 압력에도 끈질기게 버텼습니다. 의문과 슬픔이 그를 괴롭혔으며, 끊임없는 배척과 바벨론의 침략에 대한 두려움은 그의 정신적 스트레스를 가중시켰습니다.

하나님은 예레미야의 심령과 증언이 부숴지지 않도록 지속적으로 도와주셨습니다. 하나님께서 주신 사명을 포기하거나 믿음으로 사는 삶을 그만두고 싶을 때 예레미야의 하나님이 우리의 하나님이라는 사실을 기억해야 합니다. 하나님은 우리를 쇠처럼 강하게 하실 수 있습니다. 우리가 약할 때 하나님의 능력이 온전히 나타나기 때문입니다(고린도후서 12:9).

AS STRONG AS IRON

Ironclad beetles are known for their tough exterior which protects them from predators. One special variety, however, has extraordinary strength under pressure. The insect’s hard, outer shell stretches, rather than cracks, where it joins together. Its flat back and low profile also help it to resist fractures. Scientific tests show that it can survive a compression force of nearly 40,000 times its body weight.

Just as God made this bug extra tough, He gave resilience to Jeremiah as well. The prophet would face intense pressure when he delivered unwelcome messages to Israel, so God promised to make him “an iron pillar and a bronze wall” (JEREMIAH 1:18). The prophet wouldn’t be flattened, dismantled, or overwhelmed. His words would stand strong because of God’s presence and rescuing power.

Throughout his life, Jeremiah was falsely accused, arrested, tried, beaten, imprisoned, and tossed into a well—yet he survived. Jeremiah also persisted despite the weight of inner struggles. Doubt and grief plagued him. Constant rejection and the dread of a Babylonian invasion added to his mental stress.

God continually helped Jeremiah so that his spirit and testimony weren’t shattered. When we feel like giving up on the mission He’s given us, or backing away from living faith-filled lives, we can remember that Jeremiah’s God is our God. He can make us as strong as iron because His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9).

자비로운 아버지

여덟 살 난 가브리엘이 뇌종양 제거 수술을 받은 후 옆머리에 눈에 띄게 큰 흉터가 생겼습니다. 자기가 마치 괴물 같다고 아이가 말하자 그의 아버지 조쉬는 아이디어를 내어 가브리엘의 흉터와 같은 모양으로 옆머리에 문신을 새김으로써 그가 아들을 얼마나 사랑하는지를 보여주었습니다.

시편 기자에 따르면 이것이 바로 하나님이 “그의 자녀들”에 대해 갖고 계신 공감하고 불쌍히 여기는 사랑입니다(시편 103:13). 다윗은 인간의 삶에서 볼 수 있는 비유로 하나님의 사랑을 설명했습니다. 그는 하나님의 사랑은 자녀를 돌보는 좋은 아버지의 마음처럼 온화하다고 말했습니다(17절). 인간의 아버지가 자녀에게 긍휼을 베푸는 것처럼 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지 하나님도 자기를 경외하는 자들에게 사랑과 보살핌을 베풀어 주십니다. 하나님은 자기 백성들과 공감하는 자비로운 아버지이십니다.

A COMPASSIONATE FATHER

After eight-year-old Gabriel underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his brain, it left a noticeable scar on the side of his head. When the boy said he felt like a monster, his dad, Josh, had an idea: demonstrate how much he loved his son by getting a tattoo on the side of his head with the same shape as Gabriel’s scar.

According to the psalmist, this is the kind of empathic and compassionate love God has for “his children” (PSALM 103:13). Using a metaphor drawn from human life, David illustrated God’s love. He said it’s as tender as a good father’s care for his children (V. 17). Just as a human father shows compassion to his children, so God, our heavenly Father, shows love and care toward those who fear Him. He’s a compassionate father, who empathizes with His people.

When we’re weak and feel like we’re unlovable because of the scars of life, may we receive, by faith, our heavenly Father’s love toward us. He demonstrated His compassion by sending his Son to lay “down his life for us” (1 JOHN 3:16)—for our salvation. With this one act, not only can we experience God’s love for us, but we can look to the cross and see it. Aren’t you glad that we have a High Priest who can “empathize with our weaknesses” (HEBREWS 4:15)? He has the scars to prove it.

일곱 살의 토마스 에디슨은 학교를 좋아하지 않았고 학교생활도 잘하지 못했습니다. 어느 날 선생님이 그를 “정신이상자”라고까지 부르자 그는 집으로 급하게 달려갔습니다. 교사 훈련을 받은 어머니는 다음날 선생님과 면담 후 토마스를 집에서 가르치기로 했습니다. 어머니의 사랑과 격려로(그리고 하나님이 주신 그의 천재성으로) 토마스는 위대한 발명가가 되었습니다. 그는 나중에 이렇게 썼습니다. “어머니가 나를 만들어 주셨다. 어머니는 아주 진실하셨으며 나를 온전히 믿으셨다. 나는 내가 위해서 살아야 할 누군가가, 내가 실망시켜서는 안 될 누군가가 있다는 것을 느꼈다.”

THE MAKING OF ME

Seven-year-old Thomas Edison didn’t like or do well in school. One day, he was even called “addled” (mentally confused) by a teacher. He stormed home. After speaking with the teacher the next day, his mom, a teacher by training, decided to teach Thomas at home. Helped along by her love and encouragement (and his God-given genius), Thomas went on to become a great inventor. He later wrote, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had someone to live for, someone I must not disappoint.”

In Acts 15, we read that Barnabas and the apostle Paul served together as missionaries until they had a major disagreement about whether or not to bring along John Mark. Paul was opposed because Mark had earlier “deserted them in Pamphylia” (VV. 36–38). As a result, Paul and Barnabas split. Paul took Silas and Barnabas took Mark. Barnabas was willing to give Mark a second chance, and his encouragement contributed to Mark’s ability to serve and succeed as a missionary. He went on to write the gospel of Mark and was even a comfort to Paul while he was in prison (2 TIMOTHY 4:11).

Many of us can look back and point to someone in our life who encouraged and helped us along our way. God may be calling you to do the same for someone in your life. Whom might you encourage?

부서져 아름다운

후지무라 마코토의 ‘백합꽃을 보라’라는 그림을 처음 봤을 때 나는 배경 뒤에 숨어 있는 백합 한송이를 주제로 그린 단순한 단색 그림으로 치부했습니다. 그러나 그것이 실제로는 후지무라가 “느림의 예술” 이라고 부르는, 니혼가라는 일본 미술 스타일로서 아주 미세하게 분쇄된 광물을 ‘80겹’ 이상 칠해서 그려졌다는 사실을 알았을 때 하나의 살아 있는 그림으로 다가왔습니다. 자세히 보면 복잡하고 아름다운 층들이 드러납니다. 후지무라는 예수님의 고난이 세상에 온전함과 희망을 가져다준 것처럼, “깨어짐을 통해 아름다움”을 만드는 이 기술 속에서 복음을 본다고 설명합니다.

하나님은 우리의 부서지고 깨진 삶의 여러 면을 취하셔서 새롭고 아름다운 것을 창조하시기를 좋아하십니다. 다윗왕은 자신의 파괴적인 행동으로 말미암아 깨어진 삶을 고치기 위해 하나님의 도움이 필요했습니다. 다윗이 왕권을 남용하여 다른 사람의 아내를 취하고 그 남편을 살해하는 일을 도모한 것을 인정한 후에 기록한 시편 51편에서 그는 “상하고 통회하는 마음”(17절)을 하나님 앞에 내어놓고 자비를 구했습니다. “통회하는”으로 번역된 히브리어 ‘닛케’는 “으깨진”이라는 뜻입니다.

하나님께서 다윗의 마음을 새롭게 하시려면(10절) 다윗이 먼저 그의 부서진 부분들을 하나님께 내어놓아야 했습니다. 그것은 자신의 슬픈 모습과 하나님에 대한 신뢰를 함께 인정하는 태도였습니다. 다윗은 신실하시고 용서하시는 하나님, 부서진 것들을 사랑으로 취하여 아름다운 것으로 바꾸시는 하나님께 그의 마음을 맡겼습니다.

CRUSHED AND BEAUTIFUL

At first glance I dismissed the painting Consider the Lilies by Makoto Fujimura as a simple, monochromatic painting featuring a lily seemingly hiding in the background. However, the painting came alive when I learned it was actually painted with more than eighty layers of finely crushed minerals in a style of Japanese art known as Nihonga, a style Fujimura calls “slow art.” Looking closely reveals layers of complexity and beauty. Fujimura explains that he sees the gospel echoed in the technique of making “beauty through brokenness,” just as Jesus’ suffering brought the world wholeness and hope.

God loves to take aspects of our lives where we’ve been crushed and broken and create something new and beautiful. King David needed God’s help to repair the brokenness in his life caused by his own devastating actions. In Psalm 51, written after admitting to abusing his kingly power to take another man’s wife and arrange the murder of her husband, David offered God his “broken and contrite heart” (V. 17) and pleaded for mercy. The Hebrew word translated “contrite” is nidkeh, meaning “crushed.”

For God to refashion his heart (V. 10), David had to first offer Him the broken pieces. It was both an admission of sorrow and trust. David entrusted his heart to a faithful and forgiving God, who lovingly takes what’s been crushed and transforms it into something beautiful.

결혼 비유

나는 메린과의 22년 결혼생활이 어떻게 가능했는지 가끔 의아할 때가 있습니다. 나는 작가이고 메린은 통계학자입니다. 나는 글로 일하고 아내는 숫자로 일을 합니다. 나는 아름다움을 원하고 아내는 기능을 원합니다. 우리는 다른 세상에서 왔습니다.

메린은 약속 시간보다 일찍 도착하고 나는 때때로 늦습니다. 나는 메뉴에서 새로운 것들을 시켜보는데 아내는 같은 것만 주문합니다. 미술관에서 20분이 지나면 나는 그제야 감상을 시작하는데 메린은 이미 아래층 카페에 내려가 내가 얼마나 더 오래 걸릴까 생각합니다. 우리는 서로에게 인내를 배울 기회를 많이 줍니다!

우리에게는 공통점도 있습니다. 유머 감각이 있고 여행을 좋아하며 같은 믿음이 있어서 기도로 일들을 결정하고 필요할 땐 절충도 합니다. 이런 공유된 기반이 있기 때문에 우리의 다른점은 오히려 유익합니다. 아내의 도움으로 나는 느긋하게 사는 법을 배웠고, 반대로 메린은 나의 도움으로 규율 있게 사는 법을 배웠습니다. 서로의 다른 점을 겪으면서 우리는 더 나은 사람이 되었습니다.

바울이 교회를 결혼에 비유하여 설명한 데에는(에베소서 5:21-33) 그럴 만한 이유가 있습니다. 결혼과 마찬가지로 매우 다른 사람들이 함께 모이는 교회는 서로 겸손과 인내를 키우며 “사랑 가운데서 서로 용납하는”(4:2) 것을 요구합니다. 그리고 결혼에서처럼 믿음과 서로 섬김이라는 공유된 기반이 교회가 하나 되고 성숙해지는 데 도움을 줍니다(11-13절).

인간 관계에 있어서 서로의 다른점들은 큰 좌절감을 안겨줄 수 있습니다. 그러나 잘 관리만 된다면 그것들은 우리가 좀더 그리스도를 닮아가는데 도움이 될 수 있습니다.

THE MARRIAGE METAPHOR

After twenty-two years together, I sometimes wonder how my marriage to Merryn works. I’m a writer; Merryn is a statistician. I work with words; she works with numbers. I want beauty; she wants function. We come from different worlds.

Merryn arrives to appointments early; I’m occasionally late. I try new things on the menu; she orders the same. After twenty minutes at an art gallery, I’m just getting started, while Merryn is already in the cafe downstairs wondering how much longer I’ll be. We give each other many opportunities to learn patience!

We do have things in common—a shared sense of humor, a love of travel, and a common faith that helps us pray through options and compromise as needed. With this shared base, our
differences even work to our advantage. Merryn has helped me learn to relax, while I’ve helped her grow in discipline. Working with our differences has made us better people.

Paul uses marriage as a metaphor for the church (EPHESIANS 5:21–33), and with good reason. Like marriage, church brings very different people together, requiring them to develop humility and patience and to “[bear] with one another in love” (4:2). And, as in marriage, a shared base of faith and mutual service helps a church become unified and mature (VV. 11–13).

Differences in relationships can cause great frustration. But managed well, they can help us become more Christlike.

모세도 고통과 갈등을 겪었지만 하나님께서 그와 함께 하신다는 것을 알았습니다. 이스라엘 민족의 지도력을 여호수아에게 넘길 때 그는 “네 하나님 여호와 그가 너와 함께 가시기”(신명기 31:6) 때문에 강하고 담대하라고 젊은 여호수아에게 말했습니다. 모세는 이스라엘 백성들이 약속의 땅에 들어가 정복할 때 만만치 않은 적들을 만날 것을 알고 여호수아에게 “너는 두려워하지 말라 놀라지 말라”(8절)고 말했습니다.

그리스도의 제자들도 어려움을 겪게 될 것입니다. 그러나 우리에게는 힘주시는 성령님이 있습니다. 하나님은 결코 우리를 떠나지 않으십니다.

GRACE FOR TRIALS

Annie Johnson Flint was crippled by severe arthritis just a few years after high school. She never walked again and relied on others to help care for her needs. Because of her poetry and hymns, she received many visitors, including a deaconess who felt discouraged about her own ministry. When the visitor returned home, she wrote to Annie, wondering why God allowed such hard things in her life.

In response, Annie sent a poem: “God hath not promised skies always blue, / flower-strewn pathways all our lives through. . . .” She knew from experience that suffering often occurred, but that God would never abandon those He loves. Instead, He promised to give “grace for the trials, help from above, / unfailing sympathy, undying love.” You may recognize that poem as the hymn “What God Hath Promised.”

Moses also suffered and faced strife, but He knew God’s presence was with him. When he passed his leadership of the Israelites to Joshua, he told the younger man to be strong and courageous, because “the Lord your God goes with you” (DEUTERONOMY 31:6). Moses, knowing that the people of Israel would face formidable enemies as they entered and took the promised land, said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (V. 8).

Disciples of Christ will face hardship, but we have God’s Spirit to encourage us. He’ll never leave us.

몬스트로라는 이름의 금붕어

동네 반려동물 가게의 수조 바닥에 있던 한 가엾은 물고기가 레이시 스콧의 눈에 들어왔습니다. 물고기의 비늘은 검게 변해 있었고 몸에는 상처들이 있었습니다. 레이시는 그 열 살 된 물고기를 구해 동화 ‘피노키오’ 속의 고래의 이름을 따 “몬스트로”라고 부르고, “병원” 수조 안에 넣고는 매일 물을 갈아주었습니다. 몬스트로는 천천히 조금씩 나아져 헤엄치기 시작했고 몸도 커지고, 검은 비늘도 황금색으로 변했습니다. 레이시가 열심히 돌본 결과 몬스트로가 새롭게 된 것입니다!

누가복음 10장에서 예수님은 매맞고, 강도 당해 죽게 내버려진 여행자의 비유를 말씀하십니다. 제사장과 레위인 모두 그 사람의 고통을 못 본 체하고 지나갔지만, 당시 천대받던 사마리아인 중 한 사람이 자기 돈까지 들여 그의 필요를 돌보았습니다(누가복음 10:33-35). 예수님은 이야기 속의 사마리아 사람을 진정한 “이웃”이라고 하시며 듣고 있던 자들도 그와 같이 하라고 권면하셨습니다.

레이시가 죽어가던 금붕어에게 한 것처럼 우리도 주위의 어려운 사람들에게 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 노숙자나 실직자, 장애인, 외로운 “이웃들” 이 우리 앞에 놓여 있습니다. 그들의 슬픔을 외면하지 말고 관심을 가지고 내 이웃처럼 보살핍시다. 따뜻한 말 한마디, 한끼 식사, 손에 슬쩍 쥐여주는 얼마의 돈이면 됩니다. 하나님은 모든 것을 새롭게 만들 수 있는 그분의 사랑을 사람들에게 베풀기 위해 우리를 어떻게 사용하실까요?

MONSTRO THE GOLDFISH

Lacey Scott was at her local pet store when a sad fish at the bottom of the tank caught her eye. His scales had turned black and lesions had formed on his body. Lacey rescued the ten-year-old fish, named him “Monstro” after the whale in the fairytale Pinocchio, and placed him in a “hospital” tank, changing his water daily. Slowly, Monstro improved, began to swim, and grew in size. His black scales transformed to gold. Through Lacey’s committed care, Monstro was made new!

In Luke 10, Jesus tells the story of a traveler who was beaten, robbed, and left for dead. Both a priest and a Levite passed by, ignoring the man’s suffering. But a Samaritan—a member of a despised people group—took care of him, even paying for his needs (LUKE 10:33–35). Pronouncing the Samaritan as the true “neighbor” in the story, Jesus encouraged His listeners to do the same.

What Lacey did for a dying goldfish, we can do for people in need around us. Homeless, unemployed, disabled, and lonely “neighbors” lie in our path. Let us allow their sadness to catch our
eyes and draw us to respond with neighborly care. A kind greeting. A shared meal. A few dollars slipped from palm to palm. How might God use us to offer His love to others, a love which can make all things new?

재난 때문에

1717년 엄청난 파괴력을 지닌 폭풍우가 며칠 동안 맹렬히 몰아치면서 북유럽 전역에 홍수가 발생했습니다. 네덜란드와 독일, 덴마크에서는 수천 명이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 그때 한 지방 정부에서 내놓은, 당시에는 관례라 할 수 있는 한 재미있는 대처방안이 기록되어 남아 있습니다. 네덜란드 흐로닝언 시 당국은 재난 대책으로 “기도의 날”을 선포했는데, 한 역사가는 시민들이 교회에 모여 “설교를 듣고 찬송하며 몇 시간 동안 기도했다” 고 기록하고 있습니다.

요엘 선지자는 유다 백성들이 당한 불가항력적인 재난 때문에 그들도 기도하게 되었다고 기록합니다. 엄청난 메뚜기 떼가 땅을 뒤덮어 “[그 땅의] 포도나무를 멸하며 [그 땅의] 무화과나무를 황폐시켰습니다”(요엘 1:7). 그와 백성들이 재난에 휘청거릴 때 요엘은 “여호와여 내가 주께 부르짖으오니 ”(1:19)라며 기도했습니다. 직간접적으로 북유럽과 유다의 사람들은 죄와 타락한 세상에서 비롯된 재앙을 경험했습니다(창세기 3:17-19; 로마서 8:20- 22). 그러나 그들은 그 어려운 시기 때문에 하나님께 부르짖고 기도로 하나님을 찾게 되었다는 것도 알게 되었습니다(요엘1:19). 그리고 하나님도 “너희는 이제라도... 마음을 다하여 내게로 돌아오라”(요엘 2:12)고 말씀하셨습니다.

고난이나 재난을 당할 때 하나님께로 돌이킬 수 있기를 바랍니다. 어쩌면 고뇌나 회개하는 마음으로 그렇게 할 지도 모릅니다. 그럴 때 “자비로우시며” “인애가 크신”(13절) 하나님은 우리를 그분께로 이끌어 우리에게 필요한 위로와 도움을 베풀어 주십니다.

DRAWN BY DISASTER

In 1717, a devastating storm raged for days, leading to widespread flooding in northern Europe. Thousands of people lost their lives in the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. History reveals an interesting and customary—for that time—response by at least one local government. The provincial authorities of the Dutch city of Groningen called for a “prayer day” in response to the disaster. A historian reports that the citizens gathered in churches and “listened to sermons, sang psalms, and prayed for hours.”

The prophet Joel describes an overwhelming disaster faced by the people of Judah that also led to prayer. A massive swarm of locusts had covered the land and “laid waste [its] vines and ruined [its] fig trees” (JOEL 1:7). As he and his people reeled from the devastation, Joel prayed, “Lord, help us!” (1:19 NLT). Directly and indirectly, both the people of northern Europe and Judah experienced disasters that originated with the effects of sin and this fallen world (GENESIS 3:17–19; ROMANS 8:20–22). But they also found that these times led them to call out to God and seek Him in prayer (JOEL 1:19). And God said, “Even now . . . return to me with all your heart” (2:12).

When we face difficulties and disaster, may we turn to God— perhaps in anguish, perhaps in repentance. “Compassionate” and “abounding in love” (V. 13), He draws us to Himself—providing the comfort and help we need.

헤아릴 수 없는 풍성함

수 조 달러의 수 조배 가치가 있는 소행성이 화성과 목성 사이의 궤도를 빠르게 돌고 있습니다. 과학자들은 ‘16 프시케’라는 이름의 그 소행성이 도저히 헤아릴 수 없는 가치의 금과 철, 니켈, 백금과 같은 광물질로 이루어져 있다고 말합니다. 아직은 지구인들이 이 부유한 자원을 채굴하려고 하지 않지만 미국은 그 귀중한 암석을 연구하기 위해 탐사선을 보낼 계획입니다.

닿을 수 없는 곳에 헤아릴 수 없는 부가 있다는 사실은 애를 태우고 또한 좌절감이 들게 합니다. 언젠가는 분명히 그 보물을 얻기 위해 16 프시케를 향해 나서는 사람들이 나타날 것입니다.

반면에 손이 닿는 곳에 부가 있다면 어떻겠습니까? 모두가 그쪽으로 가지 않을까요? 바울 사도는 초대 로마 교회에 쓴 편지에서 얻을 수 있는 부, 곧 하나님과의 관계에서 찾을 수 있는 부에 대해 말하면서, “깊도다 하나님의 지혜와 지식의 풍성함이여”(로마서 11:33)라고 썼습니다. 성경학자 제임스 데니는 이 풍성함을 “세상의 [모든 필요를] 충족시키고도 남는 하나님의 측량할 수 없이 풍성한 사랑”이라고 설명했습니다.

우리에게 필요한 것이 바로 그것이 아닐까요? 저 멀리 떨어져 있는 소행성에 있는 금덩이보다 더 말입니다. 성령님의 도우심으로 우리는 성경에 있는 하나님의 풍성한 지혜와 지식을 캐낼 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 이끄셔서 그 풍성함을 파내고 하나님을 더 많이 알고 더 소중히 여길 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

UNTOLD RICHES

In an orbit between Mars and Jupiter zooms an asteroid worth trillions and trillions of dollars. Scientists say 16 Psyche consists of metals such as gold, iron, nickel, and platinum worth unfathomable amounts of money. For now, earthlings are not attempting to mine this rich resource, but the United States is planning to send a probe to study the valuable rock.

The promise of untold riches just out of reach can be both tantalizing and frustrating. Surely in time there will be people who will champion the cause of reaching 16 Psyche for its treasure.

But what about the prospect of riches that are within our reach? Wouldn’t everyone go for that? Writing to the first-century church at Rome, the apostle Paul spoke of attainable riches—those we find in our relationship with God. He wrote, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” (ROMANS 11:33). Bible scholar James Denney described these riches as “the unsearchable wealth of love that enables God to . . . far more than meet the [great needs] of the world.”

Isn’t that what we need—even more than gold nuggets from some far-off asteroid? We can mine the riches of God’s wisdom and knowledge found in the Scriptures as the Holy Spirit helps us. May God lead us to dig into those riches and to know and treasure Him more.
