담대히 서라

일리노이주의 어느 작은 마을에는 가정 폭력이 그 지역 범죄의 40 퍼센트를 차지합니다. 그곳의 한 목회자에 따르면, 신앙 공동체 안에서는 그것에 대해 말하기가 쉽지 않기 때문에 그 문제가 숨겨진 경우가 많다고 합니다. 그래서 이곳 목회자들은 문제를 피하기보다는 믿음을 가지고 나서서 폭력의 징후를 인식하는 방법을 배우고 이 문제를 다루는 비영리단체를 지원하면서 이 문제를 용기 있게 다루기로 했습니다. 한 목회자는 믿음과 실천의 힘에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “가시적인 지원과 함께 기도하며 긍휼을 베풀면 중요한 차이를 만들어낼 수 있습니다.”

바사의 왕후 에스더가 자기 민족의 학살을 정당화한 법에 대항하기를 주저하자, 에스더의 삼촌은 그녀가 계속 침묵한다면 그녀와 그녀의 가족도 살아남지 못하고 멸망할 것이라고 경고했습니다(에스더 4:13-14). 담대하게 일어서야 할 때임을 안 모르드개는 “네가 왕후의 자리를 얻은 것이 이 때를 위함이 아닌지 누가 알겠느냐”(14절)고 물었습니다. 우리가 불의에 대항해 목소리를 내라는 부름을 받았든지, 고통을 준 사람을 용서하라는 부름을 받았든지, 성경은 우리가 어려운 상황에 있을 때 하나님이 결코 우리를 떠나거나 버리지 않으신다고 확실히 말씀합니다(히브리서 13:5-6). 위협을 느끼는 순간에도 하나님을 바라보고 도움을 구하면 하나님은 “능력과 사랑과 절제하는 마음” 을 주셔서 끝까지 임무를 완성할 수 있도록 해 주실 것입니다(디모데후서 1:7).

STANDING BOLDLY

In a small Illinois town, domestic violence comprises 40 percent of all crimes in the community. According to a local pastor, this issue is often hidden in our faith communities because it’s uncomfortable to talk about. So instead of shying away from the problem, local ministers chose to exercise faith and courageously address the issue by taking classes to recognize the signs of violence and supporting nonprofit organizations working on the issue. Acknowledging the power of faith and action, a local minister said, “Our prayers and compassion, coupled with some tangible support, can make an important difference.”

When Esther, Queen of Persia, was hesitant to speak out against a law that authorized the genocide of her people, she was warned by her uncle that if she remained silent, she and her family wouldn’t escape but would perish (ESTHER 4:13–14). Knowing it was time to be bold and take a stand, Mordecai queried, “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (V. 14). Whether we are called to speak out against injustice or to forgive someone who’s caused us distress, the Bible assures us that in challenging circumstances, God will never leave or forsake us (HEBREWS 13:5–6). When we look to God for help in moments where we feel intimidated, he’ll give us “power, love, and self-discipline” to see our assignment through to the end (2 TIMOTHY 1:7).

겸손함이 진리

16세기 아빌라의 성녀 테레사는 하나님이 왜 겸손을 그토록 중요하게 생각하시는지 묵상하다가 문득 해답을 찾았습니다. “그것은 하나님은 최상의 진리이시고 겸손도 진리이기 때문입니다... 우리에게서는 어떤 선한 것도 나오지 않습니다. 그것은 강가에 심은 나무처럼 영혼이 가까이 머무는 은혜의 샘물에서 나오고 우리의 일에 생명을 불어넣는 해 같은 그분에게서 나옵니다.” “기도의 모든 기초는 겸손이어서, 우리가 기도를 통해 더 겸손해질수록 하나님께서 우리를 더 높여 주실 것”이기 때문에, 테레사는 우리가 기도함으로써 그 사실에 우리를 메어둘 수 있다고 결론지었습니다.

테레사의 겸손에 대한 말은 야고보서 4장에 기록된 구절들을 떠올려줍니다. 거기에서 야고보는 하나님의 은혜에 의지해서 사는 삶과 정반대인, 교만과 이기적인 욕망 같은 자기 파괴적인 본성에 대해 경고했습니다(1-6절). 야고보는 탐욕과 절망, 지속적인 충돌이 있는 삶에 대한 유일한 해결책은 우리의 교만을 회개하고 그 대신 하나님의 은혜로 채우는 것이라고 강조합니다. 다시 말해 그것은 ”주께서 우리를 높이시리라”는 확신 아래 “주 앞에서 자신을 낮추는” 것입니다(10절).

은혜의 샘물에 뿌리를 내릴 때 우리는 비로소 “위로부터 난 지혜”(3:17) 로 영양분을 공급받게 되며, 우리가 오직 주님 안에 있을 때 진리로 인해 높아지게 될 것입니다.

HUMILITY IS THE TRUTH

Reflecting one day on why God values humility so highly, sixteenth- century believer Teresa of Avila suddenly realized the answer: “It is because God is the supreme Truth, and humility is the truth. . . . Nothing good in us springs from ourselves. Rather, it comes from the waters of grace, near which the soul remains, like a tree planted by a river, and from that Sun which gives life to our works.” Teresa concluded that it’s by prayer that we anchor ourselves in that reality, for “the whole foundation of prayer is humility. The more we humble ourselves in prayer, the more will God lift us up.”

Teresa’s words about humility echo the language of Scripture in James 4, where James warned of the self-destructive nature of pride and selfish ambition, the opposite of a life lived in dependence on God’s grace (VV. 1–6). The only solution to a life of greed, despair, and constant conflict, he emphasized, is to repent of our pride in exchange for God’s grace. Or, in other words, to “humble yourselves before the Lord,” with the assurance that “he will lift you up” (V. 10).

Only when we’re rooted in the waters of grace can we find ourselves nourished by the “wisdom that comes from heaven” (3:17). Only in Him can we find ourselves lifted up by the truth.

열 여섯 살의 브라질 스케이트보더 펠리페 구스타보가 “세계 최고의 전설적인 스케이트보더”가 될 거라고 믿었던 사람은 아무도 없었습니다. 구스타보의 아버지는 아들이 프로 스케이트보더의 꿈을 이루길 원했지만 돈이 없었습니다. 그래서 그의 아버지는 차를 팔아 아들을 플로리다에서 열리는 유명한 탬파 앰 스케이트 경기에 참가시켰습니다. 무명의 구스타보는 거기서 우승했고, 그 승리 이후 놀라운 경력을 쌓아가게 되었습니다.

우리에게 큰 재력이나 깊은 지식은 없을지라도 하나님의 지혜(17-21절) 와 우리의 관심 어린 사랑으로 우리 자녀나 우리의 영향권 안에 있는 다른 아이들에게 커다란 선물을 안겨줄 수 있습니다. 우리는 아이들이 하나님을 신뢰하고 평생 추구해 나갈 길을 구별하도록 도와줄 수 있습니다(3:5-6).

DISCERNING RIGHT PATHS

No one would have believed sixteen-year-old Brazilian skateboarder Felipe Gustavo would become “one of the most legendary skateboarders on the planet.” Gustavo’s dad believed his son needed to pursue his dream of skating professionally, but they didn’t have the money. So his dad sold their car and took his son to the renowned Tampa Am skating competition in Florida. No one had heard of Gustavo . . . until he won. And the victory catapulted him into an amazing career.

Gustavo’s dad had the capacity to see his son’s heart and passion. “When I become a father,” Gustavo said, “I just want to be like 5 percent of what my dad was for me.”

Proverbs describes the opportunity parents have to help their children discern the unique way God has crafted their heart, energy, and personality—and then to direct and encourage them toward the path that reflects who God made them to be. “Start children off on the way they should go,” the writer said, “and even when they are old they will not turn from it” (22:6).

We may not possess vast resources or profound knowledge. With God’s wisdom (VV. 17–21) and our attentive love, however, we can offer our kids and other children within our sphere of influence an immense gift. We can help them trust in God and discern the paths they can follow for a lifetime (3:5–6).

힘 내려놓기

한때 세계에서 가장 힘센 사나이로 알려졌던 미국 역도선수 폴 앤더슨은 아주 심한 중이염과 체온 39.5도의 고열에도 불구하고 1956년 호주 멜버른 올림픽에서 세계 신기록을 세웠습니다. 다른 선수들보다 뒤처진 상황에서 그가 금메달을 획득할 유일한 길은 마지막 시도에서 올림픽 신기록을 세우는 것뿐이었습니다. 그의 1, 2차 시도는 아주 안 좋았습니다.

그래서 이 건장한 운동선수는 우리 같이 아주 약한 사람이라도 할 수 있는 일을 했습니다. 그는 자신의 힘을 내려놓고 하나님께 더 큰 힘을 구했습니다. 나중에 그는 “나는 협상을 한 게 아니라 정말 도움이 필요했습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 마지막 시도에서 그는 413.5파운드(187.5킬로그램)의 역기를 머리 위로 번쩍 들어올렸습니다.

그리스도의 사도인 바울은 “내가 약한 그 때에 강함이라”(고린도후서 12:10)고 했습니다. 영적인 힘을 말한 것이었는데, 바울은 하나님의 능력이 “약한 데서 온전하여짐”(9절)을 알았습니다.

STRENGTH TO LET GO

Once known as the World’s Strongest Man, American weightlifter Paul Anderson set a world record at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, despite a severe inner-ear infection and a 103-degree fever. Falling behind frontrunners, his only chance for a gold medal was to set a new Olympic record in his last event. His first two attempts failed badly.

So, the burly athlete did what even the weakest among us can do. He called on God for extra strength, letting go of his own. As he later said, “It wasn’t making a bargain. I needed help.” With his final lift, he hoisted 413.5 pounds (187.5 kg) over his head.

Paul, the apostle of Christ, wrote, “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:10). Paul was speaking of spiritual strength, but he knew that God’s power was “made perfect in weakness” (V. 9).

As the prophet Isaiah declared, “[The Lord] gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (ISAIAH 40:29).

What was the path to such strength? Abiding in Jesus. “Apart from me you can do nothing,” He said (JOHN 15:5). As weightlifter Anderson often said, “If the strongest man in the world can’t get through one day without the power of Jesus Christ—where does that leave you?” To find out, we can release our dependence on our own illusive strength, asking God for His strong and prevailing help.

하나님께 통제권을 내어 드리기

식탁 위에 올려놓을 만큼 작고 단단한 참나무를 한번 상상해 보십시오. 분재가 바로 그런 모습입니다. 분재는 자연에서 볼 수 있는 야생의 것을 축소판으로 만든 예쁜 장식용 나무입니다. 분재와 제대로 다 자란 나무는 유전적으로 차이가 없습니다. 단지 좁은 화분 안에서 가지치기와 뿌리 다듬기로 성장이 억제되어 작은 나무로 남아 있는 것입니다.

분재 나무는 멋진 장식용 식물이지만 동시에 통제의 힘을 보여줍니다. 나무가 주위 환경에 적응해 사는 것을 이용해 우리가 나무의 성장을 조작할 수는 있지만, 사실 궁극적으로 이들을 성장시키는 분은 하나님이십니다.

하나님은 에스겔 선지자에게 “나 여호와는 높은 나무를 낮추고 낮은 나무를 높인다”(에스겔 17:24)고 하셨습니다. 이 말씀은 하나님이 바벨론의 침략을 허락하여 이스라엘을 “뿌리째 뽑을” 미래의 일을 예고한 것입니다. 그러나 미래에 하나님은 열매를 맺고 “모든 종류의 새”가 가지의 그늘에서 은신처를 찾을 수 있는 한 새로운 나무를 이스라엘에 심으실 거라고 하셨습니다 (23절). 하나님은 앞에 있을 일들이 아무리 절망스러워도 다스리는 이는 여전히 하나님이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

세상은 조작이나 자신의 수고를 통해 우리의 상황을 주도하라고 말합니다. 그러나 진정한 평화와 번영은 나무를 자라게 할 수 있는 유일하신 그분께 온전히 통제권을 내어드릴 때 찾아옵니다.

RELINQUISHING CONTROL TO GOD

Picture a mighty oak tree that’s small enough to fit on a kitchen table. That’s what a bonsai looks like—a beautiful ornamental tree that’s a miniature version of what you find wild in nature. There’s no genetic difference between a bonsai and its full-size counterpart. It’s simply that a shallow pot, pruning, and root trimming restrict growth, so the plant remains small.

While bonsai trees make for wonderful decorative plants, they also illustrate the power of control. It’s true that we can manipulate their growth as the trees respond to their environment, but God is ultimately the One who makes things grow.

God spoke to the prophet Ezekiel this way: “I the Lord bring down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall” (EZEKIEL 17:24). God was foreshadowing future events when he would “uproot” the nation of Israel by allowing the Babylonians to invade. In the future, however, God would plant a new tree in Israel that would bear fruit, with “birds of every kind” finding shelter in the shade of its branches (V. 23). God said that no matter how much upcoming events seemed out of control, He was still in charge.

The world tells us to try to control our circumstances by manipulation and through our own hard work. But true peace and thriving are found by relinquishing control to the only One who can make the trees grow.

우리에게 필요한 예수님의 도움

마침내 나의 아버지도 약한 존재라는 사실을 알게 된 날이 왔습니다. 어린 나에게 아버지는 힘이 세고 투지 넘치는 분이셨습니다. 그런데 내가 청년이 되어갈 무렵 아버지가 허리를 다치셨는데, 그 일로 아버지도 결국 보통 사람이라는 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 나는 부모님과 함께 지내면서 아버지가 욕실에 가고 옷을 입고 심지어 물컵을 입에 대는 것까지 도와드렸는데, 그것이 아버지를 초라하게 만들었습니다. 아버지는 작은 일은 직접 해보려고 몇 번 시도해 보셨지만 “네 도움이 없이는 아무것도 할 수 없구나.”하며 현실을 받아들이셨습니다. 아버지는 마침내 강한 모습을 다시 회복하셨지만, 그 경험은 아버지와 나에게 중요한 교훈을 가르쳐주었습니다. 그것은 우리는 서로가 필요하다는 것입니다.

WE NEED JESUS’ HELP

The day finally came—the day I realized my father wasn’t indestructible. As a boy, I knew his strength and determination. But in my early adult years, he injured his back, and I realized that my father was mortal after all. I stayed with my parents to help my dad to the bathroom, assisting him in dressing, even guiding a glass of water to his mouth—it was humbling to him. He made some initial attempts to accomplish small tasks, but admitted, “I can’t do anything without your help.” He eventually recovered to his strong self, but that experience taught both of us an important lesson. We need each other.

And while we need each other, we need Jesus even more. In John 15, the imagery of the vine and the branches continues to be one we cling to. Yet one of the other phrases, while comforting, can also strike at our self-reliance. The thought that can easily creep into our minds is, I don’t need help. Jesus is clear—“apart from me you can do nothing” (V. 5). Christ is talking about bearing fruit, like “love, joy, peace” (GALATIANS 5:22), those core features of a disciple. To bear fruit is the life Jesus calls us to, and our total reliance on Him yields a fruitful life, a life lived to the Father’s glory (JOHN 15:8).

청지기의 특권

휴가 중 남편과 해변을 걷다가 큰 사각형의 모래밭이 임시로 세운 울타리로 막혀 있는 것을 보았습니다. 한 청년이 바다거북 둥지의 알을 보호하기 위해 자원봉사자들과 밤새워 일했다고 설명했습니다. 둥지에서 나온 새끼 거북은 동물과 사람의 위협 때문에 생존율이 낮습니다. 그는 “우리가 이런 노력을 해도 5천 마리 중 겨우 한 마리만 어른이 된다고 과학자들은 추정합니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그러나 이 젊은이는 이런 암울한 숫자에 낙심하지 않았습니다. 새끼 거북의 부화를 위해 사심 없이 봉사하는 그의 열정이 바다거북을 귀하게 여기고 보호하고자 하는 나의 열망을 한층 더 깊게 해주었습니다. 이제 나는 하나님의 창조물을 돌볼 책임이 나에게도 있음을 잊지 않으려고 바다거북 목걸이를 하고 다닙니다.

하나님이 세상을 창조하셨을 때 모든 창조물이 살고 번성할 수 있는 서식처를 주셨습니다(창세기 1:20-25). 하나님은 그의 형상대로 우리를 만드시고 “바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 가축과 온 땅과 땅에 기는 모든 것을 다스리라” 고 하셨습니다(26절). 하나님은 우리가 하나님이 주신 권위로 그분의 방대한 창조물을 돌보는 책임 있는 청지기로서 그분을 섬기게 하십니다.

THE PRIVILEGE OF STEWARDSHIP

While on vacation, my husband and I walked along the beach and noticed a large, square patch of sand blocked off by a makeshift fence. A young man explained that he worked around the clock with a team of volunteers committed to guarding the eggs in each sea turtle’s nest. Once the hatchlings emerged from their nest, the presence of both animals and humans threaten and decrease their chance of survival. “Even with all our efforts,” he said, “scientists estimate that only one out of every five thousand hatchlings reach adulthood.” These bleak numbers didn’t discourage this young man, however. His passion for selflessly serving the hatchlings deepened my desire for respecting and protecting sea turtles. Now I wear a sea turtle pendant that reminds me of my God-given responsibility to care for the creatures He’s made.

When God created the world, He provided a habitat in which each creature could live and thrive (GENESIS 1:20–25). When He created His image-bearers, God intended for us to “rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground” (V. 26). He helps us serve Him as responsible stewards who use our God-given authority to care for His vast creation.

기도가 세상을 흔들 때

개리 그린버그 박사가 확대하여 찍은 전 세계 해변의 모래 사진들을 보면 종종 그 가운데 광물이나 조개껍질, 산호 조각들이 놀랍고 생생한 색으로 빛을 발하고 있습니다.

그는 모래에는 눈에 보이는 것보다 더 많은 것들이 있다는 것을 발견했습니다. 모래를 연구하는 모래학은 모래 속 광물질 성분을 현미경으로 분석하여 부식작용과 해류의 흐름, 이들이 해안선에 미치는 영향에 대해 많은 것을 밝혀냅니다. 작은 모래 한 알도 엄청난 가치를 지닌 정보를 알려줄 수 있습니다!

하나의 작은 기도도 모래 한 알과 같이 큰 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 성경은 하나님의 나라가 임하는데 있어 기도가 지니는 힘 있는 역할에 대해 보여줍니다. 요한계시록 8장에서 요한은 한 천사가 보좌 앞 제단 곁에 “모든 성도들의 기도”를 담은 금 향로를 가지고 서 있는 것을 봅니다. “그리고 천사가 향로를 가지고 와서 제단의 불을 가득 담아 땅에 던지자 천둥과 번개가 치며 지진과 요란한 소리가 났습니다”(3, 5절, 현대인의 성경).

천사가 기도와 불을 담은 향로를 쏟자마자 일곱 나팔을 가진 일곱 천사는 “나팔 불기를 준비하며”(6절) 이 옛 세상의 마지막 날과 그리스도의 재림을 선포합니다.

때때로 우리는 우리의 기도가 크게 보탬이 되지 않는다고 느낄지 모르지만 하나님은 그 하나도 놓치지 않으십니다. 하나님은 기도를 아주 귀하게 여기셔서 하나님 나라를 완성하는데 기도가 역할을 감당하게 하십니다. 우리에게 가장 작아 보이는 기도도 하나님과 함께하면 세상을 흔들 수 있는 무게를 지닐 수 있습니다!

WHEN PRAYER SHAKES THE EARTH

Dr. Gary Greenberg has magnified and photographed sand from beaches around the world, often revealing surprising, vibrant splashes of color from the minerals, shell, and coral fragments contained within.

He’s discovered there’s more to sand than meets the eye. In arenology (the study of sand), the microscopic analysis of sand’s mineral content can reveal much about erosion, shore currents, and their potential effects on coastlines. Even a little sand can yield information of great worth!

A single prayer, like a grain of sand, can be a weighty thing. Scripture indicates prayer’s powerful role in the coming of God’s kingdom. In Revelation 8, John sees an angel standing at the altar before His throne holding a golden censer containing “the prayers of all God’s people.” “Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake” (VV. 3, 5).

Immediately after the angel hurled the censer filled with fire and prayer, seven angels with seven trumpets “prepared to sound them” (V. 6), heralding this old earth’s last days and Christ’s return.

Sometimes we may not feel like our prayers add up to much, but God doesn’t miss one. He so values them that they somehow even play a role in the consummation of His kingdom. What may seem like the smallest prayer to us can have earth-shaking weight with Him!

생명을 살리는 훈계

쉘리가 말했습니다. “유감스럽게도 우리는 얼마전 꽤 힘든 대화를 나눴습니다. 우리 둘에게 다 껄끄러운 대화였지만, 나는 그녀가 주변 사람들에게 상처를 주지 않도록 그녀의 태도와 행동을 지적해 주어야 하겠다고 느꼈습니다.” 쉘리는 자기가 지도하고 있는 젊은 여성에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 그 대화는 편하지는 않았지만 유익했으며, 오히려 둘의 관계를 더욱 돈독하게 해주었습니다. 몇 주 지나지 않아 두 사람은 겸손이란 주제로 전교인 기도회를 인도했습니다.

이런 공식적인 멘토링 관계 밖에서도 우리는 그리스도 안에서 형제 자매와 한두 번은 힘든 대화를 하게 될 것입니다. 시대를 초월하는 지혜의 책 잠언은 훈계를 주고받을 때의 겸손의 중요성을 계속 강조합니다. 사실 건설적인 비판은 “생명을 살리는 것”이라 불리며, 참된 지혜로 이끌어줍니다(잠언 15:31). 잠언 15장 5절은 미련한 자는 훈계를 업신여기지만 경계를 받는 사람은 슬기를 얻는다고 말합니다. 분명히 말해, “견책을 싫어하는 자는 죽을 것입니다”(10절). 쉘리가 보여준 것처럼 사랑으로 진실을 말하면 사람과의 관계에 새로운 생명을 불어넣을 수 있습니다.

당신 주위에 사랑의 말이나 생명을 살리는 훈계가 필요한 사람이 있습니까? 어쩌면 당신이 최근에 지혜로운 훈계에 분노나 무관심으로 대응하고 싶어 했는지도 모릅니다. 훈계를 무시하는 것은 자기 자신을 멸시하는 것이지만, 견책을 달게 받는 사람은 지식을 얻습니다(32절). 오늘 겸손함으로 서로를 훈계할 수 있도록 도와 달라고 하나님께 간구합시다.

LIFE-GIVING CORRECTION

“Unfortunately, we had a pretty hard conversation recently,” said Shellie. “I don’t think either of us enjoyed it, but I really felt her attitude and actions needed to be addressed in order to keep from hurting those around her.” Shellie was talking about the young woman she mentors. Although uncomfortable, their conversation was fruitful and actually strengthened their relationship. Just a few weeks later, the two women led a churchwide prayer time with the theme of humility.

Even outside of a formal mentoring relationship, we’ll face a tough conversation or two with a brother or sister in Christ. In Proverbs, a book full of timeless wisdom, the importance of humility in giving and receiving correction is a repeated theme. In fact, constructive criticism is called “life-giving” and leads to true wisdom (PROVERBS 15:31). Proverbs 15:5 says a fool spurns discipline, while those who heed correction show good judgment. Put plainly, “the one who hates correction will die” (V. 10). As Shellie witnessed, truth spoken in love can bring new life to a relationship.

Is there someone in your life to whom a word of loving, lifegiving correction should be spoken? Or perhaps you have recently received wise admonition and been tempted to respond with anger or indifference. To disregard discipline is to despise oneself, but to heed correction is to gain understanding (V. 32). Let’s ask God to help us give and receive correction with humility today.

하나 되어

켈리가 뇌암으로 투병 중일 때 코로나바이러스 위기가 닥쳤습니다. 그때 심장과 폐에 물이 차오르면서 다시 입원하게 되었는데 가족들은 코로나바이러스 대유행으로 인해 문병할 수도 없었습니다. 켈리의 남편 데이브는 무슨 일이든 해야겠다고 작정했습니다.

데이브는 아내가 사랑하는 사람들을 함께 모아 그들에게 메시지를 담은 큰 표지판을 만들어 오라고 부탁했습니다. 스무 명의 사람들이 표지판을 만들어 마스크를 쓴 채 병원 밖에서 “최고 엄마!”, “사랑해요”, “우리가 함께 해요.”라는 푯말을 들었습니다. 켈리는 간호사의 도움을 받아 4층 창가로 갔습니다. 데이브는 소셜 미디어에 “마스크와 흔드는 손 밖에 보이지 않았지만 그 마스크와 흔드는 손이 정말 아름다워 보였습니다.”라고 글을 올렸습니다.

바울 사도는 인생의 마지막 때에 로마 감옥에 갇혀 외로움을 느끼며 디모데에게 “너는 겨울 전에 어서 오라”(디모데후서 4:21)라고 썼습니다. 그러나 “주께서 내 곁에 서서 나에게 힘을 주셨다”(17절)고 한 것처럼 바울은 완전히 혼자는 아니었습니다. 그리고 “으불로와 부데와 리노와 글라우디아와 모든 형제가 다 네게 문안하느니라”(21절)라고 디모데에게 말한 것처럼 다른 신자들을 만나며 격려를 받았던 것도 분명해 보입니다.

우리는 공동체를 이루도록 지어졌으며, 위기에 처할 때 그 사실을 가장 절실히 느낍니다. 오늘 완전히 혼자라고 느끼는 누군가를 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을까요?

IN THIS TOGETHER

Kelly was battling brain cancer when the COVID-19 crisis hit. Then fluid developed around her heart and lungs, and she had to be hospitalized again. Her family couldn’t visit because of the pandemic. Her husband, Dave, vowed to do something.

Gathering loved ones together, Dave asked them to make large signs with messages. They did. Wearing masks, twenty people stood on the street outside the hospital holding signs: “Best Mom!” “Love You.” “We are with u.” With the help of a nurse, Kelly made her way to a fourth-floor window. “All we could see was a facemask and a waving hand,” her husband posted on social media, “but it was a beautiful facemask and waving hand.”

Late in his life, the apostle Paul felt alone as he languished in a Roman prison. He wrote to Timothy, “Do your best to get here before winter” (2 TIMOTHY 4:21). Yet Paul wasn’t totally alone. “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength,” he said (V. 17). And it’s also apparent that he had some encouraging contact with other believers. “Eubulus greets you,” he said to Timothy, “and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers and sisters” (V. 21).

We’re created for community, and we feel that most keenly when we’re in crisis. What might you do for someone who may feel entirely alone today?
