천상에서의 성찬식

1969년 7월 20일 아폴로 11호의 달 착륙선 ‘이글’이 달 고요의 바다에 착륙했을 때, 우주여행자들은 달 표면에 발을 디디기 전 비행 중 쌓인 피로를 회복하기 위한 시간을 가졌습니다. 우주비행사 버즈 올드린은 허락을 받고 성찬식을 위해 빵과 포도주를 가져왔습니다. 성경을 읽은 후 올드린은 달에서 처음 먹는 음식을 맛보았고 나중에 이런 글을 남겼습니다. “나는 우리 교회에서 준 잔에 포도주를 따랐습니다. 달의 중력이 지구의 6 분의 1인 상태에서 포도주는 천천히 그리고 우아하게 잔을 채워갔습니다.” 천상에서의 성찬식을 누리며, 올드린은 그리스도의 십자가 희생에 대한 그의 믿음과 재림에 대한 확신을 선언한 것입니다.

바울 사도는 우리에게 “예수께서 잡히시던 밤에”(고린도전서 11:23) 예수님이 그의 제자들과 함께 앉아서 하신 일을 기억하라고 권면합니다. 예수님은 떡을 들어 곧 희생될 그의 몸에 비유하셨습니다(24절). 주님은 포도주를 들면서 십자가 위에서 흘리신 피와 같이 우리의 죄 사함과 구원을 보장하는 “새 언약”의 상징이라고 말씀하셨습니다(25절). 언제 어디서나 성찬에 참여하는 것은 예수님의 희생에 대한 우리의 믿음과 약속하신 그리스도의 재림에 대한 소망을 선언하는 것입니다(26절).

우리는 어디에 있든지 부활하시고 재림하실 오직 한 분의 구주 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 확신을 가지고 찬양할 수 있습니다.

CELESTIAL COMMUNION

When Apollo 11’s Eagle lunar module landed on the moon’s Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, the space travelers took time to recover from their flight before stepping onto the moon’s surface. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin had received permission to bring bread and wine so he could take communion. After reading Scripture, he tasted the first foods ever consumed on the moon. Later, he wrote: “I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup.” As Aldrin enjoyed this celestial communion, his actions proclaimed his belief in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the guarantee of His second coming.

The apostle Paul encourages us to remember how Jesus sat with His disciples “on the night he was betrayed” (1 CORINTHIANS 11:23). Christ compared His soon-to-be sacrificed body to the bread (V. 24). He declared the wine as a symbol of “the new covenant” that secured our forgiveness and salvation through His blood shed on the cross (V. 25). Whenever and wherever we take communion, we’re proclaiming our trust in the reality of Jesus’ sacrifice and our hope in His promised second coming (V. 26).

No matter where we are, we can celebrate our faith in the one and only risen and returning Savior—Jesus Christ—with confidence.

나의 직업도 하나님을 위해

내가 기고하고 있던 잡지가 “중요하다”고 생각했던 나는 그 잡지의 고위 편집장에게 가능한 한 최상의 글을 보여주기 위해 무던히 애를 썼습니다. 그녀의 기준을 만족시켜야 한다는 압박감 속에서 나는 생각과 아이디어들을 계속 다시 고쳐 썼습니다. 그런데 무엇이 문제였을까요? 어려운 주제 때문이었을까요? 아니면 나의 진짜 걱정은 ‘편집자가 단지 내 글 뿐만 아니라 나를 인정해줄까?’ 하는 개인적인 것이었을까요?

바울은 직업과 관련된 염려에 대한 대답으로 믿을 만한 지침을 줍니다. 골로새 교회에 보내는 서신에서 그는 사람들의 인정을 받고자 하지 말고 하나님을 위해 일하라고 충고했습니다. 바울 사도는 이렇게 말했습니다. “무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라 이는 기업의 상을 주께 받을 줄 아나니 너희는 주 그리스도를 섬기느니라” (골로새서 3:23-24) .

바울의 지혜를 가슴에 새기며 우리는 상사의 눈에 들기 위해 애쓰는 것을 멈출 수 있습니다. 물론 우리는 직장 상사를 인간적으로 존중하며 그들에게 최선을 다하기 위해 노력합니다. 그러나 주님을 위해 하는 일을 주께서 인도하시고 기름 부어 주시도록 간구하면서 “주님을 위해 일한다면” 주님께서는 우리의 노력에 빛을 비추어 주실 것입니다. 그에 대한 우리의 보상은, 일에 대한 압박감에서 벗어나고 맡은 일을 완수하는 것입니다. 더 나아가 언젠가 주님께서 “잘했다” 하시는 말씀을 듣게 될 것입니다.

GIVING GOD MY WORK

The magazine I was writing for felt “important,” so I struggled to present the best possible article I could for the high-ranking editor. Feeling pressure to meet her standards, I kept rewriting my thoughts and ideas. But what was my problem? Was it my challenging topic? Or was my real worry personal: Would the editor approve of me and not just my words?

For answers to our job worries, Paul gives trustworthy instruction. In a letter to the Colossian church, Paul urged believers to work not for approval of people, but for God. As the apostle said, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (COLOSSIANS 3:23–24) .

Reflecting on Paul’s wisdom, we can stop struggling to look good in the eyes of our earthly bosses. For certain, we honor them as people and seek to give them our best. But if we work “as for the Lord”—asking Him to lead and anoint our work for Him—He’ll shine a light on our efforts. Our reward? Our job pressures ease and our assignments are completed. 죄로부터 도망쳐라

나는 이번 여름 두 번이나 옻이 올라 크게 고생했습니다. 두 번 다 우리 집 마당에서 잡초를 뽑다가 당한 일이었습니다. 그리고 두 번 다 그 세 갈래 잎의 고약한 방해꾼이 바로 근처에 은밀히 숨어 자라는 것을 보았습니다. 가까이 다가가도 큰 탈이 없을 거라 생각했습니다. 하지만 이내 그 생각이 잘못되었다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그 조그만 녹색의 괴물 쪽으로 다가갈 것이 아니라 반대 방향으로 피해 갔어야 했습니다.

구약성경에 나오는 요셉의 이야기는 옻나무보다 더 나쁜 ‘죄’로부터 도망쳐야 한다는 원칙을 잘 보여줍니다. 요셉이 이집트 고위 관리인 보디발의 집에 살고 있을 때 그의 아내가 요셉을 유혹했습니다. 요셉은 그녀에게 가까이 가려 하지 않고 반대로 도망쳤습니다.

보디발의 아내는 요셉에게 누명을 씌워 감옥에 가뒀지만 요셉은 끝까지 순결함을 유지했습니다. 그리고 창세기 39장 21절에서 보듯 “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하셨습니다.”

하나님은 우리를 그분으로부터 멀어지도록 만드는 행동이나 상황들을 피하도록 도우십니다. 죄가 다가올 때 다른 길로 도망할 수 있도록 인도하십니다. 디모데후서 2장 22절에서 바울은 “정욕을 피하라”고 기록하고 있고, 고린도전서 6장 18절에서는 “음행을 피하라”고 말하고 있습니다.

하나님의 능력 안에서 우리에게 해를 입힐 수 있는 것들로부터 도망치기를 바랍니다.

RUN FROM SIN

Twice this summer I suffered the scourge of poison ivy. Both times it happened, I was working on clearing away unwanted plant growth from our yard. And both times, I saw the nasty, three-leafed enemy lurking nearby. I figured I could get close to it without it affecting me. Soon enough, I realized I’d been wrong. Instead of getting nearer to my little green nemesis, I should have run the other way!

In the Old Testament story of Joseph, we see modeled the principle of running from something worse than poison ivy: sin. When he was living in the home of Egyptian official Potiphar, whose wife tried to seduce him, Joseph didn’t try to get close—he ran.

Although she falsely accused him and had him thrown in prison, Joseph remained pure throughout the episode. And as we see in Genesis 39:21, “The Lord was with him.”

God can help us flee activities and situations that could lead us away from Him—guiding us to run the other way when sin is nearby. In 2 Timothy 2:22, Paul writes, “Flee the evil desires.” And in 1 Corinthians 6:18, he says to “flee from sexual immorality.”

In God’s strength, may we choose to run from those things that could harm us. - DAVE BRANON

하나님의 친구의 친구

두사람이 같은 친구를 안다는 것을 알게 되면 첫 만남에서부터 매우 화기애애한 분위기가 될 수 있습니다. 집 주인이 어떤 손님을 아주 친절하게 환영하며 “만나서 반가워요. 샘의 친구나 사만타의 친구는 누구든 제 친구가 되죠.”라고 말한다면 참으로 기억에 남는 만남이 될 것입니다.

예수님도 비슷한 말씀을 하셨습니다. 그가 많은 사람들을 치유하자 군중들이 모여들었습니다. 그러나 동시에 예수님은 종교지도자들이 성전을 장사하는 집으로 만들고 그들의 영향력을 남용하는 것에 반대하심으로 적을 만들기도 하셨습니다. 갈등이 커지는 가운데서도 예수님은 그와 함께 하시는 기쁨과 대가, 경이로움을 배가시키기 위해 행동하셨습니다. 제자들에게 병을 고칠 수 있는 능력을 주셨고 하나님 나라가 가까이 왔다는 것을 선포하게 하셨습니다. 그분은 제자들에게 “누구든지 너희를 영접하는 자는 나를 영접하는 것이요” (마태복음 10:40) 그것이 또한 자신을 보내신 하나님 아버지를 영접하는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

이보다 더 삶을 변화시키는 친구 사랑이 어디 있겠습니까! 예수님은 누구든지 자신의 집 대문을 열어 그의 제자들에게 냉수 한 컵이라도 권하는 사람은 하나님이 잊지 않으실 것이라 하였습니다. 이것은 오래전의 일이지만, 지금도 예수님은 우리가 크고 작은 친절과 돌봄을 실천하기로 한다면 하나님의 친구의 친구들로서 서로를 기쁨으로 맞이해주는 방법이 얼마든지 있다고 말씀하십니다.

A FRIEND OF GOD’S FRIENDS

Something so cordial can happen in first introductions when two persons discover that they have a friend in common. In what may be its most memorable form, a big-hearted host welcomes a guest with something like, “So nice to meet you. Any friend of Sam’s, or Samantha’s, is a friend of mine.”

Jesus said something similar. He’d been attracting crowds by healing many. But He’d also been making enemies of local religious leaders by disagreeing with the way they were commercializing the temple and misusing their influence. In the middle of a growing conflict, He made a move to multiply the joy, cost, and wonder of His presence. He gave His disciples the ability to heal others and sent them out to announce that the kingdom of God was at hand. He assured the disciples: “Anyone who welcomes you, welcomes me” (MATTHEW 10:40) , and, in turn, welcomes His Father who sent Him as well.

It’s hard to imagine a more life-changing offer of friendship. For anyone who would open their house, or even give a cup of cold water to one of His disciples, Jesus assured a place in the heart of God. While that moment happened a long time ago, His words remind us that in big and little acts of kindness and hospitality there are still ways of welcoming, and being welcomed, as a friend of the friends of God. - MART DEHAAN

하나님의 공급하심

세살 난 버디와 엄마는 매주 교회에 가서 식품 사역 트럭에서 식료품을 내리는 일을 도왔습니다. 버디는 엄마가 할머니에게 배달 트럭이 고장 났다고 말하는 것을 듣고, “아니, 그럼 음식 배달은 어떻게 하죠?”라고 물었습니다. 엄마는 교회가 새 트럭을 사기 위해 돈을 모아야 할 것이라고 설명하자, 버디는 미소를 지으며, “나도 돈 있어요.”라고 말하며 방을 나갔습니다. 그리고 알록달록한 스티커로 장식된 동전이 가득 들어있는 플라스틱 병을 가지고 돌아왔습니다. 거기에는 38달러가 조금 넘는 돈이 들어있었습니다. 버디의 돈은 많지 않았지만 하나님은 그가 내놓은 돈과 다른 사람들의 헌금을 합해서 새 냉장트럭을 공급해 주셔서 교회가 계속해서 지역 사회에 봉사할 수 있도록 하셨습니다.

적은 양이라도 모든 것을 하나님의 손에 맡길 때 항상 모든 것이 넘치도록 채워집니다. 열왕기하 4장에서 한 가난한 과부가 엘리사 선지자에게 경제적 지원을 요청했습니다. 그는 그녀에게 집에 남은 것이 얼마나 되는지 알아보고 이웃에게 도움을 요청한 다음 그의 지시를 따르라고 말했습니다 (1-4절) . 기적과도 같이 하나님은 과부의 소량의 기름을 사용하여 그녀가 이웃에게서 모은 모든 항아리를 채우게 하셨습니다 (5-6절) . 엘리사는 그녀에게 “기름을 팔아 빚을 갚고 남은 것으로 너와 네 아들이 생활하라” (7절) 고 하였습니다.

GOD’S PROVISION

Three-year-old Buddy and his mom went to church each week to help unload groceries from the food ministry truck. When Buddy overheard his mom telling his grandmother that the delivery truck broke down, he said, “Oh, no. How will they do food ministry?” His mom explained that the church would have to raise money to buy a new truck. Buddy smiled. “I have money,” he said, leaving the room. He returned with a plastic jar decorated with colorful stickers and filled with coins, which amounted to a little over $38. Though Buddy didn’t have much, God combined his sacrificial offering with gifts from others to provide a new refrigerated truck, so that the church could continue serving their
community.

A small amount offered generously is always more than enough when placed in God’s hands. In 2 Kings 4, a poor widow asked the prophet Elisha for financial assistance. He told her to take inventory of her own resources, reach out to her neighbors for help, then follow his instructions (VV. 1–4) . In a miraculous display of provision, God used the widow’s small amount of oil to fill all the jars she collected from her neighbors (VV. 5–6) . Elisha told her, “Sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left” (V. 7) .

When we focus on what we don’t have, we risk missing out on watching God do great things with what we do have. - XOCHITL DIXON

다른 이들과 함께 걷기

다정하고 충성스러운 강아지 빌리는 2020년에 인터넷 스타가 되었습니다. 주인 러셀은 발목이 부러져 목발을 짚고 걸었습니다. 주인과 함께 걷던 강아지는 곧 자기도 발을 절기 시작했습니다. 걱정이 된 러셀은 강아지 빌리를 데리고 수의사에게 갔습니다. 수의사의 말이 강아지는 멀쩡하다는 것이었습니다! 강아지는 혼자 있을 때엔 자유롭게 뛰어다녔습니다. 주인과 함께 걸을 때만 발을 저는 척했던 것입니다. 그것이 바로 다른 사람의 고통을 진정으로 자기 것으로 한다는 것입니다!

다른 사람들과 함께 하라는 것은 로마 교회에 주는 바울 사도의 가르침 중 첫 번째였습니다. 그는 십계명의 마지막 다섯 가지를 이렇게 요약했습니다. “네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라” (로마서 13:9) . 우리는 8절에서도 다른 사람들과 함께 걷는 것의 중요성을 볼 수 있습니다. “피차 사랑의 빚 외에는 아무에게든지 아무 빚도 지지 말라.”

작가 제니 앨버스는 이렇게 조언합니다. “누군가가 다쳤다면 그 사람을 고치려 하지 마세요.(당신이 못 고칩니다.) 누군가가 상처를 받고 있다면, 그의 아픔을 가져가려 하지 마세요.(당신이 못 가져갑니다.) 대신 상처받은 그 사람과 함께 걸으며 사랑을 주세요.(당신이 할 수 있습니다.) 왜냐하면 종종 사람들이 필요로 하는 것은 그들이 혼자가 아니라는 걸 아는 것이기 때문입니다.”

WALKING WITH OTHERS

Billy, a loving and loyal dog, became an internet star in 2020. His owner, Russell, had broken his ankle and was using crutches to walk. Soon the dog also began to hobble when walking with his owner. Concerned, Russell took Billy to the vet, who said there was nothing wrong with him! He ran freely when he was by himself. It turned out that the dog faked a limp when he walked with his owner. That’s what you call trying to truly identify with someone’s pain!

Coming alongside others is forefront in the apostle Paul’s instructions to the church in Rome. He summed up the last five of the Ten Commandments in this way: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (ROMANS 13:9) . We can see the importance of walking with others in verse 8 as well: “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.”

Author Jenny Albers advises: “When someone is broken, don’t try to fix them. (You can’t.) When someone is hurting, don’t attempt to take away their pain. (You can’t.) Instead, love them by walking beside them in the hurt. (You can.) Because sometimes what people need is simply to know they aren’t alone.” Because Jesus, our Savior, walks alongside us through all our hurt and pain, we know what it means to walk with others. - ANNE CETAS

어두운 시간, 깊은 기도

“ 어두운 시간들이었습니다.” 이 한 문장은 어떤 유명 여성 연예인이 코로나 바이러스 대유행 기간 동안 겪었던 내적 고통을 말해줍니다. 새로운 일상에 적응하는 것은 그녀에게 도전이었고, 그 혼란 속에서 자살까지 생각했었다고 합니다. 고통의 소용돌이에서 빠져나오기 위해 그녀는 가까운 친구에게 자신의 고충을 털어놓기도 했습니다.

우리는 누구나 어려운 시간들, 나날들, 계절들을 경험할 수 있습니다. 골짜기나 험한 환경은 낯설지는 않지만 거기서 빠져나오는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 때로는 정신건강 전문가들의 도움이 필요하기도 합니다.

시편 143편에서 우리는 다윗의 삶에서 가장 어두웠던 시기에 했던 그의 기도를 듣고 교훈을 얻습니다. 정확한 상황은 알려지지 않았지만 하나님께 드리는 그의 기도는 정직하며 소망으로 가득합니다. “원수가 내 영혼을 핍박하며 내 생명을 땅에 엎어서 나로 죽은 지 오랜 자 같이 나를 암흑 속에 두었나이다 그러므로 내 심령이 속에서 상하며 내 마음이 내 속에서 참담하니이다” (3-4절) . 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 자기 내면에 벌어지는 일들을 자신에게, 친구들에게, 정신과 의사에게 알리는 것만으로는 부족합니다. 우리는 진정으로 시편 143:7-10처럼 진솔한 청원을 담은 기도로 하나님께 나아가야 합니다. 우리의 어두운 시간들은 또한 하나님만이 주실 수 있는 빛과 생명을 찾는 깊은 기도의 시간이 될 수 있습니다.

DARK MOMENTS, DEEP PRAYERS

“ I had a dark moment.” Those five words capture the internal agony of a popular female celebrity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adjusting to a new normal was part of her challenge, and in her turmoil, she acknowledged that she wrestled with thoughts of suicide. Pulling out of the downward spiral included sharing her struggle with a friend who cared.

We’re all susceptible to tumultuous hours, days, and seasons. Valleys and hard places aren’t foreign but getting out of such places can be challenging. And seeking the assistance of mental health professionals is sometimes needed.

In Psalm 143, we hear and are instructed by David’s prayer during one of the dark times of his life. The exact situation is unknown, but his prayers to God are honest and hope-filled. “The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground; he makes me dwell in the darkness like those long dead. So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed” (VV. 3–4) . For believers in Jesus, it’s not enough to acknowledge what’s going on within us to ourselves, to our friends, or to medical specialists. We must earnestly come to God (thoughts and all) with prayers that include the earnest petitions found in Psalm 143:7–10. Our dark moments can also be times for deep prayers—seeking the light and life only God can bring. - ARTHUR JACKSON

십자가의 도

장은 그의 말대로 “하나님도, 종교도, 아무것도 없이” 자랐습니다. 1989년에 그는 민주주의와 국민의 자유를 추구하며 평화시위를 하는 학생지도자들을 도왔습니다. 그러나 불행히도 시위는 정부의 개입으로 진압되었고 수백 명이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 이 사태에서의 그의 역할 때문에 장 은 자국의 지명수배 명단에 오르게 되었습니다. 감옥에 잠시 수감되었던 그는 외딴 마을로 도망쳐 거기서 나이 든 한 농부를 만나 기독교를 소개받았습니다. 그 농부는 요한복음 필사본만을 가지고 있었는데 글을 배우지 못해 장에게 읽어달라고 했습니다. 장이 말씀을 읽으면 농부가 그에게 말씀을 설명해 주는 식으로, 이렇게 일 년이 지나 장은 예수님을 믿는 신자가 되었습니다.

장은 본인이 겪었던 모든 상황을 통해 하나님께서 그를 강하게 십자가로 이끄시는 것을 알 수 있었고, 바울 사도가 고린도전서에서 이야기했던 “십자가의 도가... 하나님의 능력이라” (1:18) 는 말씀을 직접 체험했습니다. 많은 사람들이 미련한 것이요 약한 것으로 생각하는 그것이 장의 능력이 되었습니다. 그리스도를 영접하기 전에는 우리들 중에도 어떤 사람은 비슷한 생각을 했었을 것입니다. 하지만 성령을 통해 우리는 하나님의 능력과 지혜가 우리의 삶 속에 임재하고 우리를 그리스도께 인도하는 것을 알게 된 것입니다. 이제 장은 목사가 되어서 십자가의 진리를 모든 사람이 들을 수 있게 전파하고 있습니다.

예수님은 아무리 굳은 마음이라도 변화시키실 수 있는 능력이 있습니다. 누가 오늘 그분의 강력한 만지심을 필요로 합니까?

THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS

Zhang was raised with, in his words, “no God, no religion, nothing.” In 1989, seeking democracy and freedom for his people, he helped lead students in peaceful protests. But the protests tragically led to the government’s intervention and hundreds of lives lost. For his part in the event, Zhang was placed on his country’s most-wanted list. After a short imprisonment, he fled to an outlying village where he met an elderly farmer who introduced him to Christianity. She had only a handwritten copy of the gospel of John but couldn’t read, so she asked Zhang to read it to her. As he did, she explained it to him—and a year later he became a believer in Jesus.

Through all he endured, Zhang sees that God was powerfully leading him to the cross, where he experienced firsthand what the apostle Paul states in 1 Corinthians, “The message of the cross is . . . the power of God” (1:18) . What many considered foolishness, a weakness, became Zhang’s strength. For some of us, this too was our thinking before we came to Christ. But through the Spirit, we felt the power and wisdom of God breaking into our lives and leading us to Christ. Today Zhang serves as a pastor spreading the truth of the cross to all who will hear.

과감한 조치

미시간의 우리 집 벽에는 의전용으로 화려하게 장식된 활과 화살통이 오랫동안 걸려 있었습니다. 그것은 아버지가 가나에서 선교사로 섬기셨을 때 기념품으로 산 것을 내가 물려받은 것이었습니다.

그러던 어느 날 가나에서 온 친구가 우리 집을 방문했습니다. 그런데 그 활을 보더니 친구의 표정이 이상해졌습니다. 활에 달려있는 조그만 물건을 가리키며 “저건 주물이야, 부적이라고. 나도 물론 그것이 아무런 힘이 없다는 것을 알지만, 나라면 우리 집에 이런 물건은 들여놓지 않았을 거야”라고 말했습니다. 우리는 곧바로 그 부적을 활에서 잘라내어 없애버렸습니다. 우리는 하나님 외의 무엇인가를 경배하기 위해 만들어진 것은 어떤 것이라도 집에 들여놓기를 원치 않았습니다.

예루살렘의 왕이었던 요시야는 하나님이 그분의 백성에게 어떤 것을 기대하시는지 알지 못하고 자랐습니다. 그러다 대제사장이 오랫동안 무심하게 버려져 있던 성전 안에서 율법책을 발견했을 때 (열왕기하 22:8) 요시야 왕은 그 율법책에 대해 듣기를 원했습니다. 하나님께서 우상에 대해서 어떻게 말씀하셨는지를 알게 된 그는 그 자리에서 대대적인 개혁을 명령하여 유다가 하나님의 율법을 따르도록 했습니다. 이 변화는 활에서 부적을 떼어내는 것과는 비교도 안 되는 훨씬 과감한 변혁이었습니다 (열왕기하 23:3-7 참조) .

오늘날 신자들은 요시야 왕보다 훨씬 더 많은 것들을 가지고 있습니다. 우리를 교훈하는 신구약 성경이 있습니다. 서로를 돌보는 믿음의 동료들이 있습니다. 그리고 성령 충만을 힘입어 자칫 지나칠 수 있는 크고 작은 문제들을 밝히 볼 수 있습니다.

DRASTIC MEASURES

The ornate ceremonial bow and quiver had hung on the wall of our home in Michigan for years. I’d inherited them from my father, who acquired the souvenirs while we were serving as missionaries in Ghana.

Then one day a Ghanaian friend visited us. When he saw the bow, he got a strange look on his face. Pointing to a small object tied to it he said, “That is a fetish—a magic charm. I know it has no power, but I would not keep it in my house.” Quickly we cut the charm from the bow and discarded it. We didn’t want anything in our home intended for the worship of something other than God.

Josiah, king in Jerusalem, grew up with little knowledge of God’s expectations for His people. When the high priest rediscovered the Book of the Law in the long-neglected temple (2 KINGS 22:8) , Josiah wanted to hear it. As soon as he learned what God had said about idolatry, he ordered sweeping changes to bring Judah into compliance with God’s law—changes far more drastic than merely cutting a charm from a bow (SEE 2 KINGS 23:3–7) .

Believers today have more than King Josiah did—much, much more. We have the entire Bible to instruct us. We have each other. And we have the vital filling of the Holy Spirit, who brings things to light, large and small, that we might otherwise overlook. - TIM GUSTAFSON

풍요가 필요를 채운다

다른 급식업체와 마찬가지로 학교 식당에서는 필요한 음식의 양을 정확히 예측할 수 없어 보통 소비되는 양보다 더 많은 음식을 준비하고 남은 음식은 버리게 됩니다. 그러나 한편으로 집에 먹을 음식이 부족해서 주말 동안 제대로 먹지 못하는 학생들이 아직도 많습니다. 미국의 한 교육청에서는 지역 내 비영리 단체와 협력하여 좋은 방안을 만들었습니다. 남은 음식을 포장해서 학생들이 집으로 가져갈 수 있도록 한 것입니다. 이렇게 해서 잔반처리 문제와 배고픔의 문제를 동시에 해결할 수 있었습니다.

대부분의 사람들은 음식물이 남아도는 것은 문제라고 생각해도 돈이 남아도는 것은 문제로 여기지 않습니다. 학교 식당 프로젝트의 원리는 바울이 고린도인들에게 보내는 서신에서 제안했던 원리와 같습니다. 마게도냐 교회가 어려움을 겪고 있다는 사실을 알았던 바울은 그래서 고린도 교회에게 그들의 “넉넉한 것”을 가지고 마게도냐 교회의 “부족한 것을 보충하기를” (고린도후서 8:14) 부탁했습니다. 바울의 목적은 한쪽은 너무 없어서 힘들어하는데 다른 한쪽은 너무 가진 것이 많은 그러한 상황이 없도록 교회들 간에 균형을 이루는 것이었습니다.

바울은 고린도 교회의 신자들이 궁핍하게 되기까지 베풀라고 한 것이 아니라 마게도냐 교인들의 어려움을 공감하고 넉넉하게 베풀기를 원했습니다. 이것은 훗날 고린도 교인들도 비슷한 도움이 필요하게 될지도 모른다는 사실을 생각했던 것입니다. 도움이 필요한 사람들을 볼 때 우리에게 그들과 나눌 것이 없는지 생각해 봅시다. 크든 작든 우리의 나눔은 결코 헛되지 않을 것입니다!

ABUNDANCE MEETS NEED

School cafeterias, like large catering businesses, often prepare more food than is consumed simply because they can’t perfectly predict the need, and leftover food goes to waste. Yet there are many students who don’t have enough food to eat at home and who go hungry on weekends. One US school district partnered with a local non-profit to find a solution. They packaged leftovers to send home with students, and simultaneously addressed the problems of both food waste and hunger.

While most people wouldn’t look at an abundance of money as a problem the way we do with wasted food, the principle behind the school project is the same as what Paul suggests in his letter to the Corinthians. He knew the churches in Macedonia were experiencing hardship, so he asked the church in Corinth to use their “plenty” to “supply what they need[ed]” (2 CORINTHIANS 8:14) . His objective was to bring equality among the churches so none had too much while others were suffering.

Paul didn’t want the Corinthian believers to be impoverished by their giving, but to empathize with and be generous to the Macedonians, recognizing that at some point in the future they too were likely to need similar help. When we see others in need, let’s evaluate whether we might have something to share. Our giving—however large or small—will never be a waste! - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
