거짓의 아비

빅터는 서서히 음란물에 중독되어 갔습니다. 그의 많은 친구들이 음란물을 보았는데 그도 거기에 빠져든 것입니다. 그러나 이제 그것이 얼마나 잘못되었는지 알게되었습니다. 하나님께 죄를 범했을 뿐만 아니라 그의 아내에게도 큰 상처를 주었기 때문입니다. 그는 다시는 음란물을 보지 않도록 보호장치를 마련해 두겠다고 다짐했지만 너무 늦은 것이 아닌지 걱정되었습니다. ‘결혼 생활을 회복할 수 있을까? 죄에서 벗어나서 온전히 용서받을 수 있을까?’

우리의 대적 마귀는 그것이 별것 아닌 것처럼 우리를 유혹합니다. ‘모든 사람이 다 하고 있어. 뭐가 해로워?’ 그러나 우리가 마귀의 그런 계략을 깨닫는 순간 마귀는 전략을 바꿉니다. ‘너무 늦었어! 넌 너무 멀리 와 버렸어! 이제 너에겐 소망이 없어!’

영적 전쟁을 치를 때 적들은 어떻게든 우리를 파괴하려는 말을 할 것입니다. 예수님은 말씀하셨습니다. “그는 처음부터 살인한 자요 진리가 그 속에 없으므로 진리에 서지 못하고 거짓을 말할 때마다 제 것으로 말하나니 이는 그가 거짓말쟁이요 거짓의 아비가 되었음이라”(요한복음 8:44).

마귀가 거짓말쟁이라면 우리는 절대 그 말을 들어서는 안 됩니다. 우리의 죄가 별것 아니라고 말하거나 우리에게 소망이 없다고 말할 때 말입니다. 악한 자의 말은 무시하고 주님의 말을 들을 수 있도록 예수님께서 우리를 도와주시기를 간구합니다. 우리는 다음의 주님의 약속에 마음의 평안을 누립니다. “그러므로 예수께서 자기를 믿은 유대인들에게 이르시되 너희가 내 말에 거하면 참으로 내 제자가 되고 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라”(31-32절).

FATHER OF LIES

Victor slowly became addicted to pornography. Many of his friends looked at porn, and he fell into it too. But now he understands how wrong it was—he sinned against God— and it crushed his wife. He’s vowed to put safeguards in his life so he’ll never look at it again. Yet he fears it’s too late. Can his marriage be saved? Will he ever be free and fully forgiven?

Our enemy, the devil, presents temptation as if it’s no big deal. Everyone’s doing it. What’s the harm? But the moment we catch on to his scheme, he switches gears. It’s too late! You’ve gone too far! You’re hopeless now!

The enemy will say whatever it takes to destroy us as we engage in spiritual warfare. Jesus said, “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (JOHN 8:44).

If the devil is a liar, then we should never listen to him. Not when he says our sin is no big deal, and not when he says we’re beyond hope. May Jesus help us dismiss the evil one’s words and listen to Him instead. We rest our hearts on His promise: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (VV. 31–32). - MIKE WITTMER

빛이 있으라

내 딸이 아주 어렸을 때의 이야기입니다. 나는 아이가 보는 물건들의 이름을 종종 말해주곤 했습니다. 딸에게 그 물건이 무엇인지 알려주거나 아이에게 낮선 것들을 만져보게 하면서 그 단어를 소리내어 말해줌으로써 딸 아이가 탐색하고 있는 넓은 세상에 대한 이해력과 어휘력을 키워준 것입니다. 남편과 나는 딸 아이의 첫 마디가 당연히 ‘엄마’나 ‘아빠’이길 바라고 기대했지만 놀랍게도 아이가 처음 한 말은 전혀 다른 단어였습니다. 작은 입으로 ‘다이트’라고 웅얼거렸는데 내가 한 말 ‘라이트(빛)’를 흉내내어 귀엽게 잘못 발음한 것입니다.

‘빛’은 성경에 기록된 하나님의 첫 번째 말씀 중의 하나입니다. 하나님의 영이 어둡고 혼돈하며 공허한 땅 위에 운행하실 때 하나님은 “빛이 있으라” (창세기 1:3) 말씀하시며 빛을 창조하셨습니다. 하나님은 그 빛이 좋았다고 말씀하셨는데, 성경 곳곳에서 그 사실을 증명하고 있습니다. 시편 기자는 하나님의 말씀이 우리의 깨달음을 밝혀준다고 설명하고 있고(시편 119:130), 예수님은 자신이 “이 세상의 빛”이요 생명의 빛을 주시는 분이라고 말씀합니다 (요한복음 8:12).

하나님이 창조하실 때 처음 하신 말씀은 세상에 빛을 주시는 것이었습니다. 하나님의 사역에 빛이 필요했기 때문이 아니라, 바로 우리에게 빛이 필요했기 때문이었습니다. 빛이 있어서 우리가 하나님을 볼 수 있고 우리 주변의 창조물에 새겨진 하나님의 손길을 발견할 수 있습니다. 그리고 무엇이 옳고 그른지 분별할 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 이 광대한 세상에서 한 번에 한 걸음씩 예수님을 따라갈 수 있습니다.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

In my daughter’s earliest days, I often named for her the things she encountered. I’d identify objects or allow her to touch something unfamiliar and say the word for her, bringing understanding— and vocabulary—to the vast world she was exploring. Though my husband and I might naturally have expected (or hoped) her first word would be Mama or Daddy, she surprised us with an entirely different first word: her small mouth murmured dight one day—a sweet, mispronounced echo of the word light I’d just shared with her.

Light is one of God’s first words recorded for us in the Bible. As the Spirit of God hovered over a dark, formless, and empty Earth, God introduced light into His creation, saying, “Let there be light” (GENESIS 1:3). He said the light was good, which the rest of Scripture bears out: the psalmist explains that God’s words illuminate our understanding (PSALM 119:130), and Jesus refers to Himself as “the light of the world,” the giver of the light of life (JOHN 8:12).

God’s first utterance in the work of creation was to give light. That wasn’t because He needed light to do His work; no, the light was for us. Light enables us to see Him and to identify His fingerprints on the creation around us, to discern what is good from what is not, and to follow Jesus one step at a time in this vast world. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

한 밤의 청지기들

새벽 3시 급성 환자 치료 병동의 모습입니다. 어떤 걱정에 싸인 환자가 한 시간 동안 호출 버튼을 네 번이나 누릅니다. 야간 근무 중인 간호사는 불평 없이 호출에 응합니다. 곧 다른 환자가 관심을 끌려고 울면서 소리를 지릅니다. 간호사는 놀라지 않습니다. 그녀는 낮 근무 시 겪는 소란을 피하려고 5년 전 야간 근무를 신청했습니다. 하지만 곧 현실을 직시하게 되었습니다. 야간 근무에는 혼자서 환자의 몸을 들거나 돌려주어야 하는 등 추가적인 일이 뒤따랐습니다. 또한 의사에게 응급 상황을 전하려면 환자를 더욱 가까이서 살펴야 했습니다.

야간 근무를 같이 하는 동료들의 도움도 있지만 여전히 수면부족에 시달립니다. 자신의 일이 필수적이라는 것을 깨달으며 그녀는 종종 교회에 기도 요청을 합니다. “그들의 기도에 응답하시는 하나님을 찬양합니다.”

SERVANTS OF THE NIGHT

It’s 3 a.m. at an acute-care hospital. A worried patient presses the call button for the fourth time in an hour. The night-shift nurse answers without complaint. Soon another patient is screaming, crying for attention. The nurse isn’t surprised. She requested the night shift five years ago to avoid her hospital’s daytime frenzy. Then the reality hit. Night work often meant taking on extra tasks, such as lifting and turning patients by herself. It also meant closely monitoring patients’ conditions so physicians could be notified in emergencies.

Buoyed by close friendships with her nighttime co-workers, this nurse still struggles to get adequate sleep. Often, she asks her church for prayer, seeing her work as vital. “Praise God, their prayers make a difference.”

Her praise is good and right for a night worker—as well as for all of us. The psalmist wrote, “Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who minister by night in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord” (PSALM 134:1–2).

This psalm, written for the Levites who served as temple watchmen, acknowledged their vital work—protecting the temple by day and night. In our nonstop world, it feels proper to share this psalm especially for nighttime workers, yet every one of us can praise God in the night. As the psalm adds, “May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who is the Maker of heaven and earth” (V. 3). - PATRICIA RAYBON

영적 진단

장인어른의 췌장암이 화학요법으로 호전되었다가 다시 악화되었습니다. 종양이 다시 커지기 시작하자 그는 생사가 달린 결정을 내려야 했습니다. 장인어른은 의사에게 물었습니다. “이 화학요법을 계속해야 합니까, 아니면 약물이나 방사선 같은 다른 치료를 시도해 보면 안 될까요?”

유다 백성도 이와 비슷하게 생사의 질문 가운데 놓여 있었습니다. 전쟁과 기근으로 지친 하나님의 백성들은 그들의 문제가 우상 숭배가 과했기 때문인지 아니면 모자랐기 때문인지를 몰랐습니다. 결국 그들은 우상에게 더 많은 제물을 바치기로 하고, 그 우상이 그들을 지켜주고 복을 내려주는지를 지켜보기로 했습니다(예레미야 44:17).

예레미야는 그들이 내린 진단이 크게 잘못되었다고 말했습니다. 그들의 문제는 우상을 더 잘 섬기지 못한 것이 아니라 우상을 세웠다는 그 사실에 있었던 것입니다. 그들은 예레미야에게 “네가 여호와의 이름으로 우리에게 하는 말을 우리가 듣지 아니하겠다”(16절)고 말했습니다. 이에 예레미야는 이렇게 대답합니다. “너희가 분향하여 여호와께 범죄하였으며 여호와의 목소리를 순종하지 아니하고 여호와의 율법과 법규와 여러 증거대로 행하지 아니하였으므로 이 재난이 오늘과 같이 너희에게 일어났느니라”(23절).

우리도 유다 백성처럼 우리를 곤경에 빠뜨린 잘못된 방법들을 계속 더 사용하려 할 때가 있습니다. 사람과의 관계에서 문제가 생길 때 더 차갑게 대해 주거나, 재정적으로 어려워질 때 충동구매를 더 한다거나, 밀침을 당하면 똑같이 밀어붙이려 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 우리의 문제를 일으킨 그 우상이 우리를 구원할 수 없습니다. 예수님께로 돌이킬 때 주님만이 우리를 문제에서 구해주실 수 있습니다.

SPIRITUAL DIAGNOSIS

Chemotherapy reduced the tumor in my father-in-law’s pancreas, until it didn’t. As the tumor began to grow again, he was left with a life-and-death decision. He asked his doctor, “Should I take more of this chemo or try something else, perhaps a different drug or radiation?”

The people of Judah had a similar life-and-death question. Weary from war and famine, God’s people wondered whether their problem was too much idolatry or not enough. They concluded they should offer more sacrifices to a false god and see if she would protect and prosper them (JEREMIAH 44:17).

Jeremiah said they had wildly misdiagnosed their situation. Their problem wasn’t a lack of commitment to idols; their problem was that they had them. They told the prophet, “We will not listen to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!” (V. 16). Jeremiah replied, “Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed him or followed his law or his decrees or his stipulations, this disaster has come upon you” (V. 23).

Like Judah, we may be tempted to double down on sinful choices that have landed us in trouble. Relationship problems? We can be more aloof. Financial issues? We’ll spend our way to happiness. Pushed aside? We’ll be equally ruthless. But the idols that contributed to our problems can’t save us. Only Jesus can carry us through our troubles as we turn to Him. - MIKE WITTMER

믿음 안에서 성장하기

텃밭 가꾸기를 막 시작했을 때 나는 아침 일찍 채소밭으로 달려가 싹이 나왔는지 확인해보곤 했습니다. 하지만 하나도 나오지 않았습니다. 인터넷으로 “텃밭을 빨리 가꾸는 법”을 검색하다가 싹을 내는 단계가 식물의 일생에서 가장 중요한 때임을 알게 되었습니다. 그 과정을 서두르면 안 된다는 사실을 깨닫고 난 후 나는 땅을 뚫고 태양을 향해 뻗어 나오는 새싹의 강인함과 변덕스러운 날씨를 견뎌내는 힘을 감사히 여기게 되었습니다. 몇 주를 참고 기다리니 마침내 흙을 뚫고 초록 새싹들이 한가득 나왔습니다.

우리는 종종 인격이 성장하려면 시간과 노력이 필요하다는 것을 잊고, 겉으로 보이는 성공이나 업적에만 찬사를 보내곤 합니다. 야고보는 “여러 가지 시험을 당하거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라”(야고보서 1:2)고 말합니다. 하지만 시험을 기쁘게 여기는 것이 어떻게 가능할까요?

하나님은 우리에게 도전과 어려움을 겪게 하셔서 우리를 하나님이 부르시기에 합당한 모습으로 빚어 가십니다. 그분은 우리가 살면서 겪는 시련을 “온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게”(4절) 이기고 나오기를 고대하십니다. 우리는 계속해서 예수님 안에 서 있음으로써 어떤 시련도 견딜 수 있고, 더 강건해져서 마침내 우리의 삶 가운데 성령의 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다(갈라디아서 5:22-23). 하나님의 지혜로 우리는 날마다 제대로 성장하는 데 필요한 자양분을 공급받을 수 있습니다(요한복음 15:5).

GROWING IN FAITH

At the beginning of my gardening journey, I’d wake up early and run to my vegetable garden to see if anything had sprouted. Nothing. After an internet search for “fast garden growth,” I learned that the seedling stage is the most important phase of a plant’s lifespan. Knowing now that this process couldn’t be rushed, I came to appreciate the strength of small sprouts fighting their way through the soil toward the sun and their resilience to temperamental weather. After waiting patiently for a few weeks, I was finally greeted by bursts of green sprouts creeping through the soil.

Sometimes it’s easy to praise the victories and triumphs in our lives without similarly acknowledging that growth in our character often comes through time and struggle. James instructs us to “consider it pure joy” when we “face trials of many kinds” (JAMES 1:2). But what could possibly be delightful about trials?

God will sometimes allow us to go through challenges and hardships so that we can be molded into who He’s called us to be. He waits in anticipation for us to come out of the trials of life “mature and complete, not lacking anything” (V. 4). By staying grounded in Jesus, we can persevere through any challenge, growing stronger and ultimately allowing the fruit of the Spirit to blossom in our lives (GALATIANS 5:22–23). His wisdom gives us the nourishment we need to truly flourish each and every day (JOHN 15:5). - KIMYA LODER

다시 노래하라

호주에 사는 멸종 위기종 꿀빨이새가 곤경에 처해 있습니다. 그들의 노래를 잃어가고 있는 것입니다. 한때는 개체 수가 많았던 것이 지금은 300여 마리만 남아 있는 그 새는 개체 수가 너무 적은 탓에 노래를 배울 수 없게 되고, 그러다 보니 수컷들이 자기들의 고유한 노래를 잊어버려 짝짓기에 실패하는 상황에 이르렀습니다.

다행히도 환경 보호자들이 나서서 새를 구할 계획을 세워, 새들에게 노래를 불러주기로 했습니다. 좀 더 정확히 말해서, 녹음한 다른 꿀빨이새의 노래를 틀어줘서 자기들의 노래를 다시 배울 수 있도록 하는 것입니다. 그 계획에는 수컷이 노래를 배워 암컷의 마음을 끌게 되면서 개체 수가 많아지기를 바라는 의도가 담겨 있습니다.

스바냐 선지자는 곤경에 처한 백성에게 연설하면서, 그들 가운데 부패가 너무 심해 하나님의 심판이 임할 것이라고 선언했습니다(스바냐 3:1- 8). 훗날 하나님의 심판으로 포로가 되어 유배되었을 때 그들 또한 노래를 잃어버렸습니다(시편 137:4). 그러나 스바냐는 심판 이후에 하나님께서 고난당한 백성에게 오셔서 그들의 죄를 사하시고 그들에게 노래를 불러 주실 때를 미리 바라보았습니다. “그가 너로 말미암아 기쁨을 이기지 못하시며 너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라”(스바냐 3:17). 그 결과 이 백성들도 마음 속에서 우러나오는 노래를 회복할 수 있었습니다(14절).

불순종이나 삶의 시련들로 우리도 마음속에서 우러나오는 기쁨의 노래를 잃어버릴 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님께서 우리를 위해 용서와 사랑의 노래를 부르고 계십니다. 우리도 하나님의 노래를 들으며 함께 따라 부릅시다.

SING AGAIN

Australia’s regent honeyeater bird is in trouble—it’s losing its song. Though once an abundant species, just three hundred birds now remain; and with so few others to learn from, the males are forgetting their unique song and failing to attract mates.

Thankfully, conservationists plan to rescue the honeyeaters by singing to them. Or, more precisely, play them recordings of other honeyeaters singing so they can relearn their heart song. As the males pick up the tune and attract females again, it’s hoped the species will flourish once more.

The prophet Zephaniah addressed a people in trouble. With so much corruption among them, he announced that God’s judgment was coming (ZEPHANIAH 3:1–8). When this later came to pass through capture and exile, the people too lost their song (PSALM 137:4). But Zephaniah foresaw a time beyond judgment when God would come to this decimated people, forgive their sins, and sing to them: “He will take great delight in you, in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing” (ZEPHANIAH 3:17). As a result, the heart song of the people would be restored (V. 14).

Whether through our own disobedience or the trials of life, we too can lose our heart song of joy. But a Voice is singing over us songs of forgiveness and love. Let’s listen to His melody and sing along. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

나이는 숫자에 불과하다

나이가 어리다고 무언가를 이룰 수 없는 것은 아닙니다. 열한 살 난 미카일라의 경우가 분명히 그랬습니다. 미카일라는 레모네이드 가판대를 세우는 대신 레모네이드 사업을 시작했습니다. 할머니의 레시피로 시작한 ‘미 앤 비즈’ 레모네이드 사업은 텔레비전 프로그램 ‘샤크 탱크’에서 투자자들로부터 6만 달러의 투자금을 받았습니다. 그리고 한 유명 식품점과 계약을 체결하여 55개의 체인점에 자신의 레모네이드를 공급했습니다.

미카일라의 추진력과 꿈은 바울이 디모데에게 한 말을 떠올려 줍니다. “누구든지 네 연소함을 업신여기지 못하게 하고 오직 말과 행실과 사랑과 믿음과 정절에 있어서 믿는 자에게 본이 되라”(디모데전서 4:12).

디모데는 미카일라 같은 어린아이는 아니었지만 그의 대부분의 회중보다 더 어렸던 것 같습니다. 디모데가 바울 사도 밑에서 훈련을 받은 뒤에도 몇몇 사람들은 그가 자신들을 인도할 만큼 성숙하지 못하다고 생각했습니다. 바울은 디모데에게 경력을 내세워 자신을 증명하지 말고, 오직 말과 행실과 사랑과 믿음과 정절로 본이 됨으로 영적인 성숙함을 보여주라고 권면했습니다(12 절). 디모데가 보여준 경건한 삶의 본으로 인해 아무도 그를 교사와 목사로서 부족하다고 말하지 못했습니다.

우리는 나이와 관계없이 세상에 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 필요를 채워주실 때 그리스도께 중심을 둔 모습을 사람들에게 보여줌으로써 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 복음으로 우리의 삶을 빚으셔서, 나이가 열일곱이든 일흔이든 상관없이 복음을 전하기에 합당하게 될 수 있기를 소원합니다.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER

Youthfulness shouldn’t stop anyone from achievement. It certainly didn’t stop eleven-year-old Mikaila. Instead of putting up a lemonade stand, Mikaila opened a lemonade business. Me & the Bees Lemonade started with her grandmother’s recipe and eventually earned a $60,000 investment from investors on the television show Shark Tank. She also signed a contract with a major grocer to sell her lemonade at fifty-five of the chain’s stores.

Mikaila’s drive and dreams point us back to Paul’s words to Timothy: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young” (1 TIMOTHY 4:12).

Timothy, though not a child like Mikaila, was likely considerably younger than most in his congregation. After interning with the apostle Paul, some thought that Timothy wasn’t mature enough to lead them. Instead of telling him to prove himself by showing his credentials, Paul encouraged Timothy to demonstrate spiritual maturity by the way he used his words, lived his life, loved his parishioners, exercised his faith, and remained sexually pure (V. 12). No one could discredit him as a teacher and pastor if he backed it up with a godly example.

Regardless of our age, we can impact the world. We do it by setting a Christ-centered example for others as God provides what we need. May He shape our lives with the gospel, so whether we’re seventeen or seventy, we’ll be worthy to share it with others. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

안전하게 구원받음

어린 딸이 얕은 시냇물을 건너는 것을 아빠가 지켜보고 있었습니다. 딸이 신고 있던 고무장화는 무릎 높이였는데 아래쪽으로 철벅거리며 걸어가자 물이 깊어져서 장화 속으로 물이 들어갔습니다. 한 발짝도 더 내디딜 수 없게 된 딸은 “아빠, 못 움직이겠어요!”라고 소리쳤습니다. 아빠는 단 세 걸음 만에 달려와 딸을 잔디 쪽으로 끌어냈습니다. 장화를 벗고 안에 있는 물을 땅에 쏟아 내면서 딸은 웃음을 터뜨렸습니다.

하나님께서 시편 기자 다윗을 적으로부터 구해내시자 다윗은 잠시 자리에 앉아 “신을 벗고” 온 영혼에 안도감이 퍼지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 다윗은 그 느낌을 이렇게 노래로 표현했습니다. “내가 찬양을 받으실 여호와께 아뢰리니 내 원수들에게서 구원을 받으리로다”(사무엘하 22:4). 그는 하나님을 그의 반석이요, 요새, 방패, 높은 망대로 비유하며 찬양하고(2-3절), 하나님의 응답하심에 대해 이렇게 시적으로 표현했습니다. “땅이 진동하고 떨며, 그가 강림하시니, 그 앞에서는 광채가 빛나고, 하늘에서 우렛소리를 내시며, 많은 물에서 나를 건져내셨도다”(8, 10, 13-15, 17절).

오늘 주변에 당신을 대적하는 세력을 느끼거나, 영적 성장을 방해하는 죄에 갇혀 있을 수도 있습니다. 과거에 하나님께서 당신을 어떻게 도우셨는지 떠올려 보고, 그분을 찬양하며 그분의 도우심을 다시 한번 간구하십시오! 특별히 당신을 구하여 그분의 나라로 옮겨 주신 일에 감사를 드리십시오 (골로새서 1:13).

PULLED TO SAFETY

A little girl waded in a shallow creek while her father watched. Her rubber boots reached her knees. As she sloshed downstream, the water deepened until it flowed over the top of her waders. When she couldn’t take another step, she yelled, “Daddy, I’m stuck!” In three strides, her father was at her side, pulling her to the grassy bank. She yanked her boots off and laughed as water poured onto the ground.

After God rescued the psalmist David from his enemies, he took a moment to sit down, “pull off his boots,” and allow the relief to flood his soul. He wrote a song to express his feelings. “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies,” he said (2 SAMUEL 22:4). He praised God as his rock, fortress, shield, and stronghold (VV. 2–3), and then went on to narrate a poetic response of God’s response: The earth trembled. God came down from heaven. Lightning bolts flew from His presence. His voice thundered, and He drew him out of deep water (VV. 8, 10, 13–15, 17).

Maybe today you feel opposition around you. Maybe you’re stuck in sin that makes it hard to advance spiritually. Reflect on how God has helped you in the past, and then praise Him and ask Him to do it again! Thank Him especially for rescuing you by bringing you into His kingdom (COLOSSIANS 1:13). - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

먼지 같다고 느껴질 때

나는 사역팀의 주중 전화 심방 중에 워렌이 자기가 “먼지같이 느껴진다” 라고 말하는 것을 듣고, 그가 노화나 건강 문제와 연관된 육체적인 어려움을 말하고 있음을 알아차렸습니다. 둘 다 60대 후반인 워렌과 그의 아내는 2020년에 병원 진료와 수술을 받고, 집도 요양 치료에 적합한 형태로 개조했습니다. 인생의 전성기가 지난 그들은 자신들도 그것을 느끼고 있었습니다.

우리가 육체적, 지적, 정서적, 그리고 영적으로 부족하고 불완전하며 약하다는 것은 굳이 나이가 많지 않아도 알 수 있는 사실입니다. 하나님은 그의 아들 예수님의 모습으로 타락한 이 세상에 들어오셔서 인간의 연약함을 겪는 이들을 돌보아 주십니다(시편 103:13). 또한 다윗은 “그가 우리의 체질을 아시며 우리가 단지 먼지뿐임을 기억하심이로다”(14절)라고 했습니다. ‘먼지’ 라는 단어는 “여호와 하나님이 땅의 흙(먼지)으로 사람을 지으시고 생기를 그 코에 불어넣으시니 사람이 생령이 되니라”(2:7)고 하였던 창세기까지 거슬러 올라갑니다.

근래에 자신이 먼지처럼 느껴지고 있습니까? 그것은 이 땅에 사는 우리의 현실입니다. 하지만 우리가 아주 약함을 느낄 때라도 홀로 내버려진 것이 아님을 기억하십시오. 은혜로우신 하나님께서 그것을 “아시며” “기억하십니다.” 하나님은 우리 같은 이 땅의 사람들을 용서하시려고 그분의 아들 예수님을 보내주심으로 우리를 향한 그분의 사랑을 증명해 보여주셨습니다. 삶에 무슨 일이 닥쳐오더라도 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

FEELING DUSTY

When Warren mentioned during our weekly ministry team call that he was “feeling dusty,” I sensed that this was his way of referencing the physical challenges associated with aging and ill-health. For Warren and his wife, both in their late sixties, 2020 included doctors’ visits, surgical procedures, and the rearranging of their home to accommodate in-home care. They were on the other side of the prime of life and they were feeling it.

One doesn’t have to live long before sensing our inadequacies, imperfections, and weaknesses—physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. God, in the person of His Son, Jesus, stepped into our fallen world and cares for those who experience the liabilities of human existence (PSALM 103:13). Furthermore, David wrote, “He knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust” (V. 14). The term dust takes us back to Genesis: “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (2:7).

Are you feeling dusty these days? Welcome to the realities of earthly living. Remember, however, that when we feel most vulnerable, we’re not left alone. Our compassionate God “knows” and “remembers.” He demonstrated His love to us by sending His Son to provide forgiveness for earthly people like you and me. Whatever life may bring, may we trust in Him. - ARTHUR JACKSON

정말 중요한 것

내 친구는 신앙생활을 하는 직장 동료가 자기에게 어떤 정당을 지지하는지 꼬집어 물어온 것에 관해 이야기했습니다. 질문의 의도는 요즘 사회를 갈라놓고 있는 일련의 사안들에 대해 자신과 생각이 같은지 알고 싶었던 것 같았습니다. 친구는 동료와의 공통점을 찾아서, “우리 모두 신앙인이니 그리스도 안에서 하나 되는 길을 찾고 싶어요.”라고 간략하게 대답했습니다.

바울이 살았던 시대에도 여러 다른 문제들로 사람들 사이에 분열이 있었습니다. 먹어도 되는 음식은 무엇인지, 그리고 어느 날을 거룩하게 지켜야 하는지 같은 것들에 로마의 그리스도인들의 의견이 일치하지 않았습니다. 바울은 “각각 자기 마음에 확정”한 입장이 있을지라도 그들에게 예수님을 위해 사는 삶이라는 공통된 기반이 있음을 강조했습니다(로마서 14:5-9). 그는 서로 비판하기보다는 “화평의 일과 서로 덕을 세우는 일”에 힘쓰라고 권면했습니다 (19절).

많은 국가와 교회와 공동체들이 크고 작은 문제들로 분열된 이 시대에 우리는 그리스도께서 십자가에서 이루신 하나됨의 진리를 서로 강조하며 주님과 영원히 동행하는 삶을 지켜 나갈 수 있습니다. 우리 개인의 입장 때문에 “하나님의 일을 망쳐 놓지 말라”(20절, 현대인의 성경)는 바울의 권면은 2천 년 전이나 지금이나 매우 적절합니다. 우리는 서로를 비판하는 대신 사랑을 실천하면서 형제자매를 존귀히 여기며 살아야 합니다.

WHAT COUNTS

My friend recounted how she’d pointedly been asked by a fellow believer and colleague which political party she belonged to. His aim in asking the question seemed to be to predict whether he agreed with her on any number of issues currently dividing their community. In an effort to find common ground between them, she simply replied, “Since we’re both believers, I’d rather focus on our unity in Christ.”

People were also divided in Paul’s day, though over different issues. Topics such as what foods were permissible to eat and what days were considered holy brought disagreement among the Christians in Rome. Despite being “fully convinced in their own mind” on whichever position they held, Paul reminds them of their common ground: living for Jesus (ROMANS 14:5–9). Instead of passing judgment on one another, he encouraged them to “do what leads to peace and to mutual edification” (V. 19).

In an era when many countries, churches, and communities are divided over issues large and small, we can point one another to the unifying truth of Christ’s work on the cross to secure our life with Him eternally. Paul’s reminder that we ought not “destroy the work of God” (V. 20) with our individual positions is as timely today as it was 2,000 years ago. Instead of passing judgment on one another, we can act in love and live in a way that honors our brothers and sisters. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
