지구의 날에 드리는 감사

매년 4월 22일은 지구의 날로 지킵니다. 최근 몇 년간 약 200개 국가에서 10억 명 이상의 사람들이 지구의 날 관련 교육 및 봉사 활동에 참여했습니다. 매년 지구의 날은 우리가 사는 경이로운 이 세상을 돌보는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 일깨워 줍니다. 그러나 사실 환경 보호에 대한 책임은 매년 지구의 날 행사보다 훨씬 더 오래전인 창조 때부터 우리에게 주어졌습니다.

창세기에서 우리는 하나님께서 온 우주를 창조하시고 인류가 살게 될 지구를 창조하신 것을 봅니다. 멋진 산과 들판을 지으셨을 뿐 아니라 에덴동산을 만드시고 그곳에 사는 이들을 위해 음식과 집과 각종 아름다운 것들을 창조하셨습니다(창세기 2:8-9).

하나님은 가장 중요한 창조물인 사람에게 생기를 불어넣으신 후 동산 가운데 두시고(8, 22절), 그곳을 “경작하며 지키는”(15절) 책임을 맡기셨습니다. 아담과 하와가 에덴동산에서 쫓겨난 후에는 하나님의 창조물을 돌보는 것이 더욱 고된 일이 되었지만(3:17-19), 하나님은 지금까지 손수 이 땅을 돌보시며 (시편 65:9-13) 우리도 그렇게 할 것을 요구하십니다(잠언 12:10).

사는 곳이 복잡한 도시이든 시골이든, 우리는 누구나 하나님이 우리에게 맡기신 터전을 잘 돌볼 수 있는 방법들이 있습니다. 지구를 보살피면서 이 아름다운 세상을 지으신 하나님께 감사하는 마음으로 하기를 원합니다.

GRATITUDE ON EARTH DAY

Earth Day is an annual event observed on April 22. In recent years, more than one billion people in about two hundred countries have taken part in educational and service activities. Each year, Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of caring for our amazing planet. But the mandate to care for the environment is far older than this annual event—it goes all the way back to creation.

In Genesis, we learn that God created the entire universe and formed the earth as a place for humans to dwell. Not only did He fashion the mountain peaks and lush plains, God also created the garden of Eden, a beautiful place providing food, shelter, and beauty for its inhabitants (GENESIS 2:8–9).

After breathing life into His most important creation, humans, God placed them in this garden (VV. 8, 22) and gave them the responsibility “to work it and take care of it” (V. 15). After Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden, caring for God’s creation became more difficult (3:17–19), but to this day God Himself cares for our planet and its creatures (PSALM 65:9–13) and asks us to do the same (PROVERBS 12:10).

Whether we live in crowded cities or rural areas, we all have ways we can care for the areas God has entrusted to us. And as we tend the earth, may it be an act of gratitude to Him for this beautiful planet. - LISA M. SAMRA

정말로 다시 산다

부활절 바로 다음 주였기에 다섯 살 난 아들 와이엇은 부활에 관한 이야기를 이미 많이 들었습니다. 와이엇은 늘 궁금한 게 많았는데 그의 질문은 대부분 대답하기가 무척 까다로웠습니다. 나는 운전을 하고 있었고 아들은 안전벨트를 매고 뒷좌석에 앉아 있었습니다. 와이엇이 창문을 내다보면서 깊이 생각에 잠기더니, “아빠” 하고 부르며 어려운 질문을 하려는 듯 잠시 멈추었다 이렇게 물었습니다. “예수님이 우리를 다시 살려주실 때 ‘정말로’ 다시 사는 거예요, 아니면 그냥 생각으로만 사는 거예요?”

이것은 용기를 내어 말하든 그렇지 않든 정말 많은 사람들이 생각하고 있는 질문입니다. 하나님은 정말로 우리를 고쳐주실까요? 하나님은 정말로 우리를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리실까요? 하나님은 정말로 모든 약속을 지키실까요?

요한 사도는 우리의 분명한 훗날의 모습을 “새 하늘과 새 땅”(요한계시록 21:1)으로 묘사합니다. 그곳 거룩한 천성에서 “[우리는] 하나님의 백성이 되고 하나님은 친히 [우리와] 함께 계실”(3절) 것입니다. 그리스도의 승리로 우리는 더 이상 눈물이 없고, 하나님과 그의 백성을 대적하는 악의 공격도 없는 미래를 약속받았습니다. “다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라”(4절).

다시 말해 우리는 하나님이 약속하신 미래에서 ‘정말로’ 다시 살게 될 것입니다. 지금의 삶은 한낱 그림자였던 것처럼 느껴질 정도로 그렇게 다시 살게 될 것입니다.

REALLY ALIVE

Since it was the week after Easter, our five-year-old son, Wyatt, had heard plenty of resurrection talk. He always had questions—usually real stumpers. I was driving, and he was buckled into his seat behind me. Wyatt peered out the window, deep in thought. “Daddy,” he said, pausing and preparing to ask me a tough one. “When Jesus brings us back to life, are we going to be really alive—or just alive in our heads?”

This is the question so many of us carry, whether or not we have the courage to speak it aloud. Is God really going to heal us? Is He really going to raise us from the dead? Is He really going to keep all His promises?

The apostle John describes our certain future as “a new heaven and a new earth” (REVELATION 21:1). In that holy city, “God himself will be with [us] and be [our] God” (V. 3). Because of Christ’s victory, we’re promised a future where there’s no more tears, no evil arrayed against God and His people. In this good future, “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (V. 4).

In other words, in the future God promises, we’ll be really alive. We’ll be so alive that our life now will seem a mere shadow. - WINN COLLIER

위험을 감수하는 사랑

한 친구가 아무런 설명도 없이 나와 10년간 이어온 관계를 끊어버렸습니다. 나는 예전 습관대로 사람들과 거리를 두기 시작했습니다. 상한 마음을 달래려 책장에서 C.S. 루이스의 ‘네 가지 사랑’이라는 오래된 책을 집어 들었습니다. 루이스는 상처를 동반하는 사랑에 관해 예리한 관찰을 하였습니다. 그는 한 사람이 위험을 감수하고 사랑하기로 할 때 “결코 안전한 투자는 없다”라고 말합니다. 그리고 무엇이든 사랑하게 되면 “마음을 졸여야 하고 때로는 가슴에 상처를 남길 수도 있다”고 말합니다. 그 글들을 읽은 후 나는 베드로가 예수님을 한 번도 아닌 세 번씩이나 부인한 후에(18:15-27) 예수님이 부활하시고 제자들에게 세 번째로 찾아가셨을 때의 이야기를(요한복음 21:1-14) 새롭게 이해할 수 있었습니다.

예수님은 “요한의 아들 시몬아 네가 이 사람들보다 나를 더 사랑하느냐” (21:15)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

배신과 거절의 아픔을 겪으신 예수님은 베드로에게 두려움이 아닌 담대함으로, 약함이 아닌 강함으로, 체념이 아닌 배려의 마음으로 말씀하셨습니다. 이렇게 변함없이 사랑하심으로써 예수님은 진노 대신 자비를 보이셨습니다.

성경은 “주께서 세 번째 ‘네가 나를 사랑하느냐’ 하시므로 베드로가 근심하여”(17절)라고 기록합니다. 그러나 예수님이 베드로에게 다른 사람들을 사랑하고(15-17절) 주님을 따름으로(19절) 그의 사랑을 증명하라고 말씀하신 것은, 다른 모든 제자들에게도 그렇게 조건 없는 사랑을 하라고 권면하신 것입니다. 예수님이 “네가 나를 사랑하느냐?”라고 물으실 때 우리는 대답을 해야 합니다. 그 대답으로 우리가 다른 사람을 어떻게 사랑하는지가 정해질 것입니다.

LOVE IS WORTH THE RISK

After a friend ended our decade-long friendship without explanation, I began slipping back into my old habit of keeping people at arms’ length. While processing my grief, I pulled a tattered copy of The Four Loves by C. S. Lewis off my shelf. Lewis makes a powerful observation about love requiring vulnerability. He states there’s “no safe investment” when a person risks loving. He suggests that loving “anything [will lead to] your heart being wrung and possibly broken.” Reading those words changed how I read the account of the third time Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection (JOHN 21:1–14), after Peter had betrayed Him not once but three times (18:15–27).

Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” (21:15).

After experiencing the sting of betrayal and rejection, Jesus spoke to Peter with courage not fear, strength not weakness, selflessness not desperation. He displayed mercy not wrath by confirming His willingness to love.

Scripture reveals that “Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ ” (V. 17). But when Jesus asked Peter to prove his love by loving others (VV. 15–17) and following Him (V. 19), He invited all His disciples to risk loving unconditionally. Each of us will have to answer when Jesus asks, “Do you love me?” Our answer will impact how we love others. - XOCHITL DIXON

와서 예배하라

여러 세대가 모인 예배에서 함께 찬양을 부를 때 많은 이들이 기쁨과 평안을 느끼고 있었지만 한 지친 엄마만은 그러지를 못했습니다. 그 엄마는 막 울려고 하는 아기를 달래면서 다섯 살 난 아이에게 찬송가를 보여주고, 걸음마를 뗀 다른 아이를 도망가지 못하게 붙드는 일을 동시에 하고 있었습니다. 그때 뒤에 앉아있던 한 노신사가 걸음마를 뗀 아이를 자신이 데리고 교회를 한 바퀴 돌고 오겠다고 하고, 한 젊은 여인은 자기가 찬송가를 들어 큰아이에게 보여주겠다고 했습니다. 2분이 지나지 않아 엄마의 상황은 바뀌어서 이제는 한숨을 돌리며 눈을 감고 하나님을 예배할 수 있었습니다.

하나님은 남자와 여자, 노인과 청년, 오래된 성도와 새로운 성도 등, 언제나 모든 하나님의 백성들이 그분을 예배하기를 원하셨습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 약속의 땅으로 들어가기 전 모세는 각 지파들을 축복하면서 모두가 함께 모일 것을 권면하며 이같이 말했습니다. “백성의 남녀와 어린이와 네 성읍 안에 거류하는 타국인을 모으고 그들에게 듣고 배우고 네 하나님 여호와를 경외하며” 이 율법의 모든 말씀을 지켜 행하게 하라(신명기 31:12). 우리 삶의 형편이 어떻든 하나님의 백성들이 함께 모여 주님을 예배할 수 있을 때 하나님께서 영광을 받으십니다.

그날 아침 교회에서 예배를 드렸던 엄마와 노신사, 그리고 젊은 여인은 서로 도움을 주고받음으로써 제각각 하나님의 사랑을 경험했습니다. 어쩌면 다음에 교회에 가면 우리도 도움을 줌으로써 하나님의 사랑을 나누어 주거나 우리 자신이 그 은혜의 손길을 받는 사람이 될 수도 있습니다.

COME AND WORSHIP

As they sang praise songs together in the multi-generational worship service, many experienced joy and peace. But not a frazzled mother. As she jiggled her baby, who was on the verge of crying, she held the songbook for her five-year-old while trying to stop her toddler from running off. Then an older gentleman sitting behind her offered to walk the toddler around the church and a young woman motioned that she could hold the songbook for the eldest child. Within two minutes, the mother’s experience was transformed and she could exhale, close her eyes, and worship God.

God has always intended that all His people worship Him—men and women, old and young, longtime believers, and newcomers. As Moses blessed the tribes of Israel before they entered the promised land, he urged them all to meet together, “men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns,” so that they could “listen and learn to fear the Lord your God” and to follow His commands (DEUTERONOMY 31:12). It honors God when we make it possible for His people to worship Him together, no matter our stage of life.

That morning in church, the mother, the older gentleman, and the young woman each experienced God’s love through giving and receiving. Perhaps the next time you’re at church, you too could either extend God’s love through an offer of help or you could be the one accepting the act of grace. 에벌린의 직장 상사가 그녀에게 물었습니다. “당신이 좋아하는 부서의 규모를 축소하려는 일로 아직도 화가 나 있어요?” “아뇨.” 그녀는 이를 악물었습니다. 상사가 그 일로 자기를 놀리는 것 같아 더 기분이 언짢았습니다. 그녀는 이제까지 회사를 도와 다양한 이익단체들을 세우기 위해 노력해 왔지만, 제한된 공간 때문에 그 일이 거의 불가능했습니다. 에벌린은 애써 눈물을 참고 상사의 요구에 따르기로 했습니다. 자신이 바라던 변화를 이루어내지는 못했지만, 주어진 일에 계속 최선을 다할 수 있었습니다.

베드로 사도는 그의 첫 번째 서신에서 예수님을 믿는 초대 교회 성도들에게 “인간의 모든 제도”에 순종할 것을 강조했습니다(베드로전서 2:13). 어려운 업무 현장에서 성실함을 유지하기는 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 베드로는 지속해서 선을 행해야 하는 이유를 이렇게 설명합니다. “너희가 이방인 중에 행실을 선하게 가져 너희를 악행한다고 비방하는 자들로 하여금 너희 선한 일을 보고 오시는 날에 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려 함이라”(12절). 아울러 그렇게 함으로써 우리를 지켜보는 다른 성도들에게 경건한 본이 될 수 있습니다.

우리의 일터가 정말로 혹사를 강요하는 곳이라면, 가능하면 그곳을 떠나는 것이 최선일 수도 있습니다(고린도전서 7:21). 하지만 안전한 환경이라면 “이는 하나님 앞에 아름다우니라”(베드로전서 2:20)라는 말씀을 기억하며 성령님의 도우심으로 우리의 일터에서 계속해서 선을 행해야 합니다. 우리가 권위에 순종할 때, 우리로 말미암아 다른 사람들이 하나님을 따르고 영화롭게 할 기회가 생길 수 있습니다.

WITNESS IN THE WORKPLACE

“Are you still upset that I want to reduce the size of your favorite department?” Evelyn’s manager asked. “No.” She tightened her jaw. She was more frustrated that he seemed to be teasing her about it. She’d been trying to help the company by finding ways to draw in different interest groups, but limited space made this nearly impossible. Evelyn fought back tears, but she made the decision to do whatever her manager asked. Maybe she couldn’t bring about the changes she’d hoped, but she could still do her job to the best of her ability.

In the apostle Peter’s first letter, he urged first-century believers in Jesus to submit “to every human authority” (1 PETER 2:13). Maintaining integrity in a tough work situation isn’t easy. But Peter gives us a reason to continue doing good: “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God” (V. 12). Additionally, this helps us set a godly example for other believers who are watching.

If we’re in a truly abusive work situation, it may be best to leave if at all possible (1 CORINTHIANS 7:21). But in a safe environment, with the Spirit’s help we can continue to do good in our work remembering “this is commendable before God” (1 PETER 2:20). When we submit to authority, we have an opportunity to give others reason to follow and glorify God. - JULIE SCHWAB

이것이 모든 것을 바꿉니다

오랫동안 예일대 교수로 재직하며 “당대의 탁월한 기독교 역사 권위자” 의 한 명으로 꼽혔던 야로슬라프 펠리컨은 그의 오랜 학문적 경륜으로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 30권 이상의 저서를 출판한 그는 방대한 저술 활동에 대한 평생의 공로로 권위 있는 클루지 상을 받았습니다. 그러나 그의 한 제자는 자기 생각에 스승의 가장 중요한 어록은 임종 때 남긴 다음 말이라고 회고했습니다. “만일 예수님이 부활하셨다면, 다른 것은 하나도 문제될 것이 없다. 그리고 만일 예수님이 부활하지 않으셨다면, 이보다 더 큰 문제는 없다.”

펠리컨의 이 말은 “그리스도께서 만일 다시 살아나지 못하셨으면 우리가 전파하는 것도 헛것이요 또 너희 믿음도 헛것”(고린도전서 15:14)이라 하였던 바울의 확신과 같은 것이었습니다. 바울 사도는 부활이 단 한번 있는 기적이 아니라, 인류 역사에 있어서 하나님의 구속 사역의 절정이라는 사실을 알았기에 그같이 담대하게 말할 수 있었습니다. 부활에 대한 하나님의 약속은 예수님이 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아나신다는 것뿐 아니라, 우리 가운데 죽음으로 무너진 것들(삶, 이웃, 관계)이 예수님을 통해 언젠가 다시 회복된다는 것을 분명히 확증하신 것입니다. 부활이 없으면 그것은 우리에게 큰 문제라는 것을 바울은 알고 있었습니다. 부활이 없으면 죽음과 파멸이 승리하기 때문입니다.

그러나 물론 “그리스도께서 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아나셨습니다”(20 절). 승리의 주님으로 말미암아 사망은 패퇴하였습니다. 예수님은 부활할 모든 자들의 “첫 열매”가 되셨습니다. 주님이 죄와 죽음을 이기심으로 우리는 담대하고 자유롭게 살 수 있게 되었습니다. 바로 이것이 모든 것을 바꾸어 줍니다.

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Jaroslav Pelikan, longtime Yale professor considered one of “his generation’s preeminent authorities on Christian history,” was renowned for his extensive academic career. He published more than thirty books and won the esteemed Kluge Prize as a lifetime award for his voluminous writing. One of his students, however, recounted what he considered his teacher’s most important words, spoken from his deathbed: “If Christ is risen, nothing else matters. And if Christ is not—nothing else matters.”

Pelikan echoed Paul’s conviction: “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:14). The apostle made such a bold statement because he knew that the resurrection was not merely a one-off miracle but rather the pinnacle of God’s redeeming work in human history. The promise of resurrection wasn’t only His assurance that Jesus would rise from the dead but His bold affirmation that other dead and ruined things (lives, neighborhoods, relationships) would also one day be brought back to life through Christ. If there’s no resurrection, however, Paul knew that we’re in deep trouble. If there’s no resurrection, then death and destruction win.

But, of course, “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead” (V. 20). Destroyed by the Victor, death loses. And Jesus is the “firstfruits” of all the life that will follow. He conquered evil and death so that we could live bold and free. This changes everything. - WINN COLLIER

한 남자가 젊은 나이에 세상을 떠난 친구를 추모하면서 “어떻게든 사실이 아니게 되돌리고 싶구나”라고 하며 애통해 했습니다. 그의 말은 모든 인간이 지금껏 겪어 온 가슴 아픈 절규였습니다. 죽음은 우리 모두에게 충격과 상처를 줍니다. 되돌릴 수 없는 일을 되돌리고 싶어 괴로워합니다.

“사실이 아니게 되돌리고 싶어” 하는 간절함은 예수님이 돌아가신 후 그를 따르던 사람들의 마음에도 잘 나타나 있습니다. 복음서는 그 무서운 처형의 시간들에 관해서는 아주 짧게 언급하지만 몇몇 신실했던 사람들이 한 일은 자세히 기록하고 있습니다.

남몰래 예수님을 믿었던 종교지도자 요셉은(요한복음 19:38 참조) 용기를 내어 예수님의 시신을 달라고 빌라도에게 요청했습니다(누가복음 23:52). 십자가에서 끔찍한 고난을 당한 예수님의 몸을 옮겨 정성껏 장례를 준비하는 것이 어떠했을지 잠시 생각해 보십시오(53절). 그리고 예수님과 무덤에까지 모든 순간을 함께했던 여인들의 헌신과 용기에 대해서도 생각해 보십시오(55절).

예수님을 따랐던 이 사람들에게 부활의 기대는 없었고 그저 눈앞의 슬픔을 그대로 받아들이고 있었습니다. 누가복음 23장은 아무런 희망도 없이 이렇게 어두운 막을 내립니다. “돌아가 [예수의 몸에 바르기 위해] 향품과 향유를 준비하더라 계명을 따라 안식일에 쉬더라”(56절).

그러나 그 안식일에 인류 역사에 가장 극적인 장면을 위한 무대가 마련되고 있다는 사실을 그들은 모르고 있었습니다. 예수님께서 상상도 못할 일을 곧 하시기 전이었습니다. 그리고 예수님은 마침내 죽음 자체를 “사실이 아니게 되돌리셨습니다.”

NOT SO

“I wanted somehow to make it not so,” lamented the man, eulogizing a friend who died young. His words gave poignancy to humanity’s ageless heart-cry. Death stuns and scars us all. We ache to undo what can’t be undone.

The longing to “make it not so” might well describe how Jesus’ followers felt after His death. The Gospels say little about those awful hours, but they do record the actions of a few faithful friends.

Joseph, a religious leader who secretly believed in Jesus (SEE JOHN 19:38), suddenly found the courage to ask Pilate for Jesus’ body (LUKE 23:52). Ponder for a moment what it would take to remove a body from a grisly crucifixion and tenderly prepare it for burial (V. 53). Consider too the devotion and bravery of the women who stayed with Jesus every step of the way, even to the tomb (V. 55).

These followers weren’t anticipating a resurrection; they were coming to terms with grief. The chapter ends without hope, merely a somber, “Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes [to embalm Jesus’ body]. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment” (V. 56).

Little did they know the Sabbath intermission was setting the stage for history’s most dramatic scene. Jesus was about to do the unimaginable. He would make death itself “not so.” - TIM GUSTAFSON

평화의 십자가

네덜란드 출신 현대미술 화가 에그버트 모더맨이 그린 ‘구레네 시몬’ 이라는 그림을 보면 그의 눈이 침울한 표정으로 불거져 나올 듯합니다. 시몬이 져야 했던 십자가 무게의 엄청난 육체적, 정신적 압박감이 그의 눈에 잘 나타나 있습니다. 마가복음 15장을 보면 지켜보던 무리의 하나였던 시몬이 예수님의 십자가를 지도록 억지로 끌려 나왔습니다.

마가에 의하면 시몬은 예수님 당시에 많은 유대인들이 살던 북아프리카의 구레네라는 큰 도시에서 온 사람이었습니다. 아마도 그 당시 시몬은 유월절을 지키려고 예루살렘에 와 있었을 것입니다. 거기서 그는 이 불의한 사형집행 과정에 끌려들어와 작지만 아주 뜻깊은 방법으로 예수님께 도움을 드릴 수 있었습니다(마가복음 15:21).

마가복음의 앞부분을 보면 예수님이 제자들에게 “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라”(8:34) 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님이 제자들에게 비유적으로 말씀하셨던 것을 시몬은 골고다로 가는 길에서 실제로 행했습니다. 자기에게 주어진 십자가를 받아 예수님 대신 지고 간 것입니다.

우리도 각자 감당해야 할 “십자가”가 있습니다. 그것은 병이거나 힘든 사역일 수도 있고, 사랑하는 사람을 잃어버리거나 믿음 때문에 받는 박해일 수도 있습니다. 우리가 이런 고통들을 믿음으로 견뎌낼 때 예수님이 십자가에서 우리를 위해 겪으신 희생을 다른 사람들도 알 수 있게 됩니다. 주님의 십자가를 통해 우리는 하나님과 화평을 누리고 삶의 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다.

HIS CROSS OF PEACE

Somber eyes peer out from the painting Simon of Cyrene by contemporary Dutch artist Egbert Modderman. Simon’s eyes reveal the immense physical and emotional burden of his responsibility. In the biblical account from Mark 15, we learn that Simon was pulled from the watching crowd and forced to carry Jesus’ cross.

Mark tells us that Simon was from Cyrene, a big city in North Africa with a large population of Jews during Jesus’ time. Most likely Simon had journeyed to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. There he found himself in the middle of this unjust execution but was able to perform a small but meaningful act of assistance to Jesus (MARK 15:21).

Earlier in the gospel of Mark, Jesus tells His followers, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (8:34). On the road to Golgotha, Simon literally did what Jesus figuratively asks His disciples to do: he took up the cross given to him and carried it for Jesus’ sake.

We too have “crosses” to bear: perhaps an illness, a challenging ministry assignment, the loss of a loved one, or persecution for our faith. As we carry these sufferings by faith, we point people to the sufferings of Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross. It was His cross that gave us peace with God and strength for our own journey. - LISA M. SAMRA

“때는 밤이었다”

엘리 비젤의 책 ‘밤’은 홀로코스트의 공포를 실감나게 합니다. 나치의 죽음의 수용소에서의 경험을 바탕으로 한 비젤의 이야기는 성경의 출애굽과 반대로 전개됩니다. 모세와 이스라엘 사람들은 첫 번째 유월절에 노예 생활에서 ‘벗어나지만’(출애굽기 12장), 비젤은 유월절 바로 후에 나치가 유대인 지도자들을 체포한 것에 대해 이야기합니다.

비젤과 그의 어두운 아이러니를 비판하지 않고 이해하기 위해서는 성경에도 비슷한 줄거리 반전이 들어있다는 것을 생각해야 합니다. 하나님의 백성을 고난에서 구해주실 거라고 기대했던 예수님이 유월절 밤에 오히려 자신을 죽이려는 자들이 체포하도록 놔두신 것입니다.

요한은 우리를 예수님께서 체포되시기 전의 거룩한 장면으로 안내합니다. 예수님은 최후의 만찬에서 자신에게 일어날 일들에 대해 “심령에 근심하시면서” 자신이 배반당할 것을 예언하셨습니다(요한복음 13:21). 그러고는 자신을 팔 자에게 떡을 나눠 주시는, 우리로서는 이해하기 힘든 일을 하셨습니다. 그 구절은 이렇게 말합니다. “유다는 빵 조각을 받자 즉시 밖으로 나갔는데 때는 밤이었다”(30절, 현대인의 성경). 역사상 가장 큰 불의가 진행되던 그 시간, 예수님은 “지금 인자가 영광을 받았고 하나님도 인자로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨도다”(31절)라고 선포하셨습니다. 몇 시간 후 제자들은 공황과 패배와 낙담을 경험할 것이었습니다. 그러나 예수님은 하나님의 계획이 원래대로 전개되는 것을 보셨습니다.

어두움이 이기는 것 같을 때, 우리는 하나님께서 그 어두운 밤과 마주해 승리하셨음을 기억해야 합니다. 하나님이 우리와 함께하십니다. 그리고 밤은 끝나게 되어있습니다.

“AND IT WAS NIGHT”

Elie Wiesel’s book Night starkly confronts us with the horrors of the Holocaust. Based on his own experiences in Nazi death camps, Wiesel’s account flips the biblical story of the Exodus. While Moses and the Israelites escaped slavery at the first Passover (EXODUS 12), Wiesel tells of the Nazis arresting Jewish leaders following Passover.

Lest we criticize Wiesel and his dark irony, consider that the Bible contains a similar plot twist. On the night of Passover, Jesus, expected to free God’s people from suffering, instead permits Himself to be arrested by those who would kill Him.

John ushers us into the holy scene before Jesus’ arrest. “Troubled in spirit” over what awaited Him, at the Last Supper Jesus predicted His betrayal (JOHN 13:21). Then, in an act we can scarcely comprehend, Christ served His betrayer bread. The account reads: “As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night” (V. 30). History’s greatest injustice was underway, yet Jesus declared, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him” (V. 31). In a few hours, the disciples would experience panic, defeat, and dejection. But Jesus saw God’s plan unfolding as it should.

When it seems as though the darkness is winning, we can recall that God faced His dark night and defeated it. He walks with us. It won’t always be night. - TIM GUSTAFSON

사랑으로 인도하심

네 살 난 손자가 무릎에 앉아 내 벗어진 머리를 쓰다듬으며 유심히 살펴보다가, “할아버지, 머리카락이 다 어디 갔어요?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 웃으며 “아, 시간이 지나면서 다 빠졌단다.”라고 대답했습니다. 그러자 손자는 사뭇 심각한 표정으로 “너무 안됐어요. 내 머리카락을 할아버지한테 드려야겠어요.”라고 말했습니다.

나는 그런 손자의 마음이 기특해 미소 지으며 그를 가까이 끌어당겨 안아주었습니다. 손자가 할아버지에게 사랑을 표현한 그 흐뭇한 순간을 돌이켜보던 나는 우리에 대한 하나님의 이타적이고 관대한 사랑에 대해서도 생각하게 되었습니다.

G. K. 체스터턴은 이렇게 썼습니다. “우리는 죄를 범하며 늙지만 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리보다 젊다.” 그는 이 말이 “옛적부터 항상 계신”(다니엘 7:9) 그분은 죄의 부패로 더럽혀지지 않는다는 것을 뜻한다고 말했습니다. 하나님은 늙지 않으시며 결코 흔들리거나 시들지 않는 사랑으로 우리를 뜨겁게 사랑하십니다. 하나님은 이사야 46장에서 그의 백성들에게 하신 약속을 성취하실 수 있으며 기꺼이 그렇게 하실 것입니다. “너희가 노년에 이르기까지 내가 그리하겠고 백발이 되기까지 내가 너희를 품을 것이라 내가 지었은즉 내가 업을 것이요 내가 품고 구하여 내리라”(4절).

CARRIED BY LOVE

My four-year-old grandson sat on my lap and patted my bald head, studying it intently. “Papa,” he asked, “What happened to your hair?” “Oh,” I laughed, “I lost it over the years.” His face turned thoughtful: “That’s too bad,” he responded. “I’ll have to give you some of mine.”

I smiled at his compassion and pulled him close for a hug. Reflecting later on his love for me in that cherished moment also caused me to ponder God’s selfless, generous love.

G. K. Chesterton wrote: “We have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.” By this he meant that the “Ancient of Days” (DANIEL 7:9) is untainted by sin’s decay—God is ageless and loves us exuberantly with a love that never falters or fades. He’s fully willing and able to fulfill the promise He made to His people in Isaiah 46: “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you” (V. 4).

Five verses later He explains, “I am God, and there is none like me” (V. 9). The great “I am” (EXODUS 3:14) loves us so deeply that He went to the extreme of dying on the cross to bear the full weight of our sin, so that we might turn to Him and be free of our burden and gratefully worship Him forever! - JAMES BANKS
