우리를 위해, 우리와 같이 되신

데릭은 아들이 수영을 할 때면 태어날 때부터 있는 가슴과 배, 왼팔에 걸쳐 있는 반점을 의식해서 셔츠를 벗기 싫어한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 데릭은 아들을 돕기로 마음먹고 자신의 몸에 아들과 똑같은 반점을 만들기 위해 길고 고통스러운 과정을 참고 문신을 새겨 넣었습니다.

아들을 향한 데릭의 사랑은 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 비춰 줍니다. 그분의 자녀인 우리가 “혈과 육에 속하였으매”(히브리서 2:14) 예수님이 우리처럼 인간의 모습을 취하시고 “[우리와] 같은 모양으로” 오셔서 죽음의 권세에서 우리를 자유롭게 해주셨습니다(14절). 우리와 하나님과의 관계를 회복하시기 위해 “주님은 모든 점에서 [우리와] 같이 되셔야 했습니다”(17절, 현대인의 성경).

데릭은 아들이 그의 자의식을 극복하도록 돕기를 원했기에 자신의 몸을 아들과 “똑같이” 만들었습니다. 예수님은 우리의 훨씬 더 큰 문제, 곧 죽음의 노예 상태에 있는 우리의 문제를 극복하도록 도와주셨습니다. 주님은 우리를 ‘위해’ 우리와 ‘같이’ 되셔서 우리를 대신해 죽으심으로 우리 죄의 결과를 감당하셨습니다.

예수님은 기꺼이 우리 인간의 모습이 되심으로 우리와 하나님과의 올바른 관계를 견고케 해주셨을 뿐 아니라 우리가 고통받을 때에도 그분을 신뢰할 수 있게 하십니다. 유혹이나 고난을 만날 때 우리는 우리를 “능히 도우실 수 있는”(18절) 예수님의 능력과 도우심을 의지할 수 있습니다. 사랑의 아버지처럼 주님은 우리를 이해하고 보살펴주십니다.

LIKE US, FOR US

Derek noticed his son didn’t want to take off his shirt to swim and realized it was because he was self-conscious about a birthmark that covers parts of his chest, belly, and left arm. Determined to help his son, Derek underwent a lengthy and painful tattooing process to create an identical mark on his own body.

Derek’s love for his son reflects God’s love for His sons and daughters. Because we, His children, “have flesh and blood” (HEBREWS 2:14), Jesus became like us and took on a human form and “shared in [our] humanity” to free us from the power of death (V. 14). “He had to be made like [us], fully human in every way” (V. 17) to make things right with God for us.

Derek wanted to help his son overcome his self-consciousness and so made himself “like” him. Jesus helped us overcome our far greater problem—slavery to death. He overcame it for us by making Himself like us, bearing the consequence of our sin by dying in our place.

Jesus’ willingness to share in our humanity not only secured our right relationship with God but enables us to trust Him in our moments of struggle. When we face temptation and hardship, we can lean on Him for strength and support because “he is able to help” (V. 18). Like a loving father, He understands and cares. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

모든 순간을 소중하게

노스캐롤라이나 대학의 도서관 기록 보관소에 있는 한 회중시계의 멈춰진 시계바늘에는 마음 아픈 사연이 담겨 있습니다. 시계는 1857년 6월 27 일 아침, 주인인 엘리사 미첼이 애팔래치아산맥의 폭포에서 실족하여 떨어져 죽은 바로 그 시간(8시 19분 56초)을 가리키고 있습니다.

이 대학의 교수였던 미첼은 그가 오른 산 정상(현재 그의 이름을 딴 미첼 산)이 미시시피강 동쪽에서 가장 높은 봉우리라는 주장을 증명하기 위해 자료를 수집하던 중이었습니다. 그의 무덤은 그가 추락한 곳에서 멀지 않은 산 정상에 있습니다.

나는 얼마 전 그 산봉우리에 오르면서 미첼의 이야기와 나 자신의 죽음에 대해, 그리고 우리 모두에게 인생의 남은 시간이 얼마나 있는지를 생각하며, 예수님께서 감람산에서 “이러므로 너희도 준비하고 있으라 생각하지 않은 때에 인자가 오리라”(마태복음 24:44)고 하신 말씀을 묵상했습니다.

예수님은 언제 다시 오셔서 영원한 그의 나라를 세우실지, 혹은 언제 우리를 이 세상에서 불러내어 그에게로 오라고 하실지 아무도 모른다고 분명히 말씀하십니다. 그러나 주님은 우리에게 준비하고 “깨어있으라”(42 절)고 말씀하십니다.

우리 삶의 “시계”는 매 순간 아직 ‘재깍...재깍...’ 돌아가고 있습니다. 하지만 언제까지일까요? 우리의 자비로운 구세주를 기다리고 그분을 위해 일하면서, 주님을 사랑하는 가운데 우리의 매 순간을 살 수 있기를 바랍니다.

MAKING EVERY MOMENT COUNT

The halted hands of a pocket watch in a library’s archives at the University of North Carolina tell a harrowing tale. They mark the exact moment (8:19 and 56 seconds) the watch’s owner Elisha Mitchell slipped and fell to his death at a waterfall in the Appalachian Mountains on the morning of June 27, 1857.

Mitchell, a professor at the university, was gathering data to defend his (correct) claim that the peak he was on—which now bears his name, Mount Mitchell—was the highest one east of the Mississippi. His grave is located at the mountain’s summit, not far from where he fell.

As I ascended that mountain peak recently, I reflected on Mitchell’s story and my own mortality and how each of us has only so much time. And I pondered Jesus’ words about His return as He spoke to His disciples on the Mount of Olives: “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him” (MATTHEW 24:44).

Jesus clearly indicates that none of us knows either the moment He’ll return and establish His kingdom forever or when He may summon us to leave this world and come to Him. But He tells us to be prepared and “keep watch” (V. 42).

Tick . . . tick . . . The “clockwork” of each of our lives is still in motion—but for how long? May we live our moments in love with our merciful Savior, waiting and working for Him. - JAMES BANKS

나귀를 탄 왕

오늘날 종려 주일이라고 부르는 바로 그 주일이었습니다. 분명히 예수님이 예루살렘을 처음 방문하신 것은 아니었습니다. 예수님은 독실한 유대인으로서 매해 3대 절기에 그곳에 가셨을 것입니다 (누가복음 2:41-42; 요한복음 2:13; 5:1). 지난 3년 동안 예수님은 예루살렘에서 사역도 하며 말씀도 가르치셨습니다. 하지만 주님이 입성하신 그 주일은 전과는 완전히 달랐습니다.

수많은 사람들이 예배 드리러 예루살렘으로 들어오고 있던 그때에 예수님은 어린 나귀를 타고 들어오심으로써 모든 사람들의 주목을 받았습니다 (마태복음 21:9-10). 지난 3년 동안은 일부러 눈에 띄지 않게 지내셨는데 왜 수많은 사람들 앞에 눈에 띄게 나타나셨을까요? 왜 돌아가시기 닷새 전에 예수님이 왕이라고 하는 사람들의 선언을 받아들이셨을까요?

마태는 그것을 하나님이 선택하신 왕이 “공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 [그러나] 겸손하여서 나귀를 타시며”(스가랴 9:9; 창세기 49:10-11 참조) 예루살렘에 들어오신다는 오백 년 전 예언을 이루기 위함(마태복음 21:4-5) 이라고 말합니다.

승리를 거둔 왕이 이렇게 입성하는 것은 정말로 비정상적인 일이었습니다. 정복한 왕들은 보통 힘센 종마를 탔습니다. 그러나 예수님은 군마를 타지 않으셨습니다. 이것은 예수님이 어떤 왕이신지를 보여줍니다. 주님은 온유하고 겸손한 모습으로 오셨습니다. 예수님은 전쟁이 아니라 평화를 위해, 하나님과 우리 사이에 화평을 이루시기 위해 오셨습니다(사도행전 10:36; 골로새서 1:20).

A KING ON A DONKEY

It was Sunday—the day we now call Palm Sunday. Without a doubt, this wasn’t Jesus’ first visit to Jerusalem. As a devout Jew, He would’ve gone to the city every year for the three great feasts (LUKE 2:41–42; JOHN 2:13; 5:1). In the past three years, Christ had also ministered and taught in Jerusalem. But this Sunday His coming into the city was radically different.

By riding a young donkey into Jerusalem at a time when thousands of worshipers were coming into the city, Jesus was the center of attention (MATTHEW 21:9–11). Why would He take the place of prominence before thousands of people when for the past three years He’d deliberately kept a low profile? Why would He accept the people’s proclamation that He was King just five days before His death?

Matthew says that this took place to fulfill a five-hundredyear- old prophecy (MATTHEW 21:4–5) that God’s chosen king would come into Jerusalem “righteous and victorious, [yet] lowly and riding on a donkey” (ZECHARIAH 9:9; SEE ALSO GENESIS 49:10–11).

This was a truly unusual way for a triumphant king to enter a city. Conquering kings normally rode on mighty stallions. But Jesus didn’t come riding a warhorse. This reveals what kind of King Jesus is. He came in meekness and lowliness. Jesus came not for war, but for peace, establishing peace between God and us (ACTS 10:36; COLOSSIANS 1:20). - K. T. SIM

2019년 옥스퍼드 버스 회사는 원하는 탑승객들에게 대화할 사람들을 제공해 주는 “수다 버스”를 시작하여 순식간에 인기를 끌었습니다. 이 노선은 영국 사람의 30퍼센트가 일주일에 적어도 하루는 의미 있는 대화 없이 지낸다는 사실이 정부 기관의 연구에서 밝혀진 데서 시작되었습니다.

많은 사람들이 이야기할 상대가 필요할 때 아무도 없어서 외로웠던 경험이 있을 것입니다. 살면서 내가 나누었던 중요한 대화들이 얼마나 값진 것인지 돌이켜 보면 그중에서도 은혜가 많았던 대화들이 기억에 남습니다. 그 순간들은 나에게 기쁨과 용기를 가져다주었고 사람들과 더욱 깊은 관계로 발전하는 계기가 되었습니다.

바울은 골로새 교회에 보내는 편지를 마치면서, 만나는 모든 사람에게 대화를 통해 사랑을 나타내는 방법과 예수님을 믿는 사람들의 진실한 삶의 원칙들을 말하며 그들을 격려했습니다. 바울 사도는 “너희 말을 항상 은혜 가운데서 하라”(4:6)고 하면서, 그들로 다른 사람들에게 진정한 격려가 되게 해주는 것은 그냥 하는 말이 아니라 말의 ‘질’, 곧 “은혜 가운데” 하는 말이라고 독자들에게 일깨워 주었습니다.

다음에 친구나 직장동료, 또는 버스나 대기실 옆자리에 앉은 낯선 사람을 만나서 깊은 대화를 나눌 기회가 생길 때, 함께하는 그 시간이 당신과 그 사람 모두에게 복이 될 수 있는 방법을 찾아보시기 바랍니다.

CHATTY BUS

In 2019, the Oxford Bus Company launched the instantly popular “Chatty Bus,” a bus with designated people on board willing to talk with interested passengers. The route was initiated in response to government research which found that 30 percent of Britons go at least one day each week without a meaningful conversation.

Many of us have likely experienced the loneliness that comes from not having someone to talk to in a time of need. As I reflect on the value of important conversations in my life, I’m especially reminded of discussions that were full of grace. Those times brought me joy and encouragement, and they helped to cultivate deeper relationships.

At the end of his letter to the Colossian church, Paul encouraged his readers with principles of authentic living for believers in Jesus, including ways our conversations can exhibit love to everyone we encounter. The apostle wrote, “Let your conversation be always full of grace” (4:6), reminding his readers that it is not simply the presence of words but the quality of those words— “full of grace”—that would allow them to be a true encouragement to others.

The next time you have the opportunity to connect deeply in conversation—with a friend, co-worker, or even a stranger seated next to you on a bus or in a waiting room—look for ways your time together might bring blessing into both of your lives. - LISA M. SAMRA

영원한 안식처

얼마 전 이전 집에서 조금 떨어진 새 집으로 이사했습니다. 비록 가까운 거리였지만 두 집의 최종 계약에 시차가 생겨 모든 살림살이를 이삿짐 트럭에 실어야 했습니다. 그 기간 중 모든 가구를 트럭에 실어놓은 채 우리 가족은 임시 숙소에 머물렀습니다. 놀랍게도 그동안 나는 집이 아닌 곳에 머물면서도 “우리 집”에 있는 것처럼 편하게 느꼈습니다. 그것은 나의 가장 사랑하는 가족과 함께 있었기 때문이었습니다.

다윗도 한동안 집 없이 떠돌아다녔습니다. 그는 사울 왕에게 쫓기는 삶을 살았습니다. 하나님이 다윗을 왕위 계승자로 세우자 사울은 위협을 느껴 그를 죽이려고 했습니다. 다윗은 자기 집을 떠나 피난처가 되는 곳이면 어디서든 잠을 잤습니다. 함께 따르는 사람들도 있었지만 다윗의 가장 간절한 소망은 “여호와의 집에 거하는 것”, 곧 하나님과 영원한 교제를 누리는 것이었습니다 (시편 27:4).

예수님은 우리의 변함없는 동반자시며 우리가 어디에 있든지 “안식처”가 되십니다. 주님은 현재의 환난 중에도 우리와 함께 하시지만, 우리가 주님과 영원히 함께 거할 처소도 예비하십니다(요한복음 14:3). 이 세상에서 겪을 불확실성과 변화에도 불구하고 우리는 매일 어디서나 주님과 교제하며 그 안에 영원히 거할 수 있습니다.

PERMANENT ADDRESS

Not long ago we moved to a new home just a short distance from our old one. Despite the close proximity, we still needed to load all of our belongings onto a moving truck because of the timing of the financial transactions. Between the sale and purchase, our furnishings stayed on the truck and our family found temporary lodging. During that time, I was surprised to discover how “at home” I felt despite the displacement from our physical home—simply because I was with those I love most: my family.

For part of his life, David lacked a physical home. He lived life on the run from King Saul. As David was God’s appointed successor to the throne, Saul perceived him as a threat and sought to kill him. David fled his home and slept wherever he found shelter. Though he had companions with him, David’s most earnest desire was to “dwell in the house of the Lord”—to enjoy permanent fellowship with Him (PSALM 27:4).

Jesus is our constant companion, our sense of “home” no matter where we are. He’s with us in our present troubles and even prepares a place for us to live with Him forever (JOHN 14:3). Despite the uncertainty and change we might experience as citizens of this earth, we can dwell permanently in our fellowship with Him every day and everywhere. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

진정한 환대

“꾸마인 까 나 바?” (식사하셨습니까?)

이 말은 내가 살던 필리핀에서 다른 집을 방문하면 항상 듣는 인사말입니다. 필리핀에서는 손님을 친절하게 맞이할 때 이렇게 표현합니다. 그리고 손님이 어떻게 대답하든 상관없이 집주인은 먹을 것을 항상 내놓습니다. 필리핀 사람들은 진정한 친절이란 단지 통상적인 인사를 주고받는데 그치지 않고 그 말 이상으로 진정한 환대를 베푸는 것이라고 생각합니다.

리브가도 친절에 대해 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그녀의 일상적인 집안일은 마을 밖 우물에서 물을 길어 그 무거운 물 항아리를 집으로 들고 가는 것이었습니다. 여행 중 목이 많이 말랐던 아브라함의 종이 항아리의 물을 조금 달라고 했을 때, 그녀는 주저 없이 그에게 마실 물을 주었습니다(창세기 24:17-18).

리브가는 한걸음 더 나아가, 나그네의 낙타도 목이 마른 것을 보고 낙타에게 줄 물을 더 길어 오겠다고 했습니다(19-20절). 우물까지 가서 한 번 (혹은 몇 번) 더 무거운 항아리에 물을 길어 오는 수고를 마다하지 않고 기꺼이 도움을 베푼 것입니다.

많은 사람들이 고단한 삶을 살아가지만 종종 친절한 하나의 작은 배려로 격려를 받고 기운이 살아날 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 전하는 통로가 되는 것은 힘찬 설교를 하거나 교회를 세우는 것만을 의미하지 않습니다. 그것은 때로는 단순히 누군가에게 마실 물 한 잔을 주는 것일 수도 있습니다.

REAL HOSPITALITY

“Kumain ka na ba?” (Have you eaten?)

This is what you’ll always hear as a visitor in many homes in the Philippines, where I’m from. It’s the Filipino way of expressing care and kindness for our guests. And regardless of your reply, your host will always prepare something for you to eat. Filipinos believe that true kindness isn’t just saying the standard greeting but also going beyond words to show real hospitality.

Rebekah too, knew all about being kind. Her daily chores included drawing water from the well outside town and carrying the heavy jar of water home. When Abraham’s servant, who was very thirsty from his journey, asked for a little water from her jar, she didn’t hesitate to give him a drink (GENESIS 24:17–18).

But then Rebekah did even more. When she saw that the visitor’s camels were thirsty, she quickly offered to go back to draw more water for them (VV. 19–20). She didn’t hesitate to help, even if it meant making an extra trip (or more) to the well and back with a heavy jar.

Life is tough for many people, and often a small gesture of practical kindness can encourage them and lift their spirits. Being a channel of God’s love doesn’t always mean delivering a powerful sermon or planting a church. Sometimes, it can simply be giving someone a drink of water. - KAREN HUANG

주차장에서의 다툼

주차장에서 웃고 넘어갈 수도 있었던 일이 큰 싸움으로 번졌습니다. 한 운전자가 주행로를 차로 가로막고 있는 다른 운전자와 큰소리로 싸우며 심한 말을 주고받고 있었습니다.

그 광경이 더욱 씁쓸했던 이유는 다툼이 교회 주차장에서 일어났기 때문입니다. 어쩌면 두 남자는 방금 전에 사랑과 인내와 용서에 관한 설교를 들었을 텐데 상황이 과열되면서 들은 것을 다 잊어버린 것입니다.

그 옆을 지나가면서 나는 절레절레 머리를 흔들었지만, 나 또한 그들과 별로 다르지 않다는 것을 바로 깨닫게 되었습니다. 성경을 읽고서도 금방 사랑 없는 마음으로 죄를 범한 적이 얼마나 많았는지? “누구든지 말씀을 듣고 행하지 아니하면 그는 거울로 자기의 생긴 얼굴을 보는 사람과 같아서 제 자신을 보고 가서 그 모습이 어떠했는지를 곧 잊어버리는”(야고보서 1:23-24) 그런 사람의 행동을 한 적이 나도 얼마나 많았는지요?

야고보는 그의 편지를 읽는 성도들에게 하나님의 말씀을 읽고 깊이 생각할 뿐 아니라 그대로 행하라고 권면하고 있습니다(22절). 완전한 믿음이란 성경을 아는 것과 함께 그것을 행동으로 옮기는 것을 의미한다고 그는 강조했습니다.

PARKING LOT QUARREL

The scene in the parking lot might have been funny if it wasn’t so tragic. Two drivers were arguing loudly over one of their cars that was blocking the passage of the other, and harsh words were being exchanged.

What made it especially painful to watch was that this quarrel was taking place in the parking lot of a church. The two men had possibly just heard a sermon about love, patience, or forgiveness, but it was all forgotten in the heat of the moment.

Passing by, I shook my head—then quickly realized I was no better. How many times had I read the Bible, only to fall into sin moments later with an uncharitable thought? How many times had I behaved like the person who “looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like” (JAMES 1:23–24)?

James was calling on his readers not only to read and reflect on God’s instruction, but also to do what it says (V. 22). A complete faith, he noted, means both knowing Scripture and putting it into action.

Life’s circumstances can make it hard to apply what Scripture reveals. But if we ask the Father, He’ll surely help us obey His words and please Him with our actions. - LESLIE KOH

선한 일

십대 시절 찰스 스펄전은 하나님과 씨름했습니다. 교회를 다니며 성장했던 그였지만 설교가 지루하고 무의미하게 느껴졌습니다. 하나님을 믿는 것이 고역이 된 찰스는 자신의 말처럼 “반항과 반발”을 일삼았습니다. 그러다 폭설이 내리는 어느 날 밤 16세의 스펄전은 한 작은 감리교회로 피신하게 되었는데, 그날 목사의 설교는 바로 그를 향해 하는 것 같았습니다. 그 순간 하나님은 씨름에서 이기셨고 찰스는 그의 마음을 예수님께 드렸습니다.

훗날 스펄전은 “내가 그리스도와 함께하기 훨씬 전부터 그분이 나와 함께하셨다.”라고 썼습니다. 사실 하나님과 함께하는 우리의 삶은 우리가 구원받는 그 순간에 시작되는 것이 아닙니다. 시편 기자는 하나님이 “[우리의] 내장을 지으시며” 어머니의 태에서 우리를 만드셨다고 기록했습니다(시편 139:13). 바울 사도도 하나님이 “내 어머니의 태로부터 나를 택정하시고 그의 은혜로 나를 부르셨다”(갈라디아서 1:15)고 쓰고 있습니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리가 구원받을 때 일을 멈추지 않으십니다. “여러분 가운데 선한 일을 시작하신 하나님께서... 그 일을 완성하실 것입니다”(빌립보서 1:6, 현대인의 성경).

우리는 모두 사랑하는 하나님의 손안에서 성장하는 과정에 있습니다. 하나님은 반항하는 우리와 씨름을 해서라도 그분의 따뜻한 품으로 인도하십니다. 하지만 우리를 향한 하나님의 이러한 뜻은 시작에 불과합니다. “너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하시나니”(빌립보서 2:13). 확실한 것은 나이나 삶의 어떤 단계에 있든지 관계없이 우리는 하나님의 선한 작품이라는 것입니다.

A GOOD WORK

As a teenager, Charles Spurgeon wrestled with God. He’d grown up going to church, but what was preached seemed bland and meaningless. It was a struggle for him to believe in God, and Charles, in his own words, “rebelled and revolted.” One night a fierce snowstorm forced the sixteen-year-old Spurgeon to seek shelter in a tiny Methodist church. The pastor’s sermon seemed directed at him personally. In that moment, God won the wrestling match, and Charles gave his heart to Jesus.

Spurgeon later wrote, “Long before I began with Christ, He began with me.” In fact, our life with God doesn’t begin with the moment of salvation. The psalmist notes that God “created [our] inmost being,” knitting us together in our mother’s womb (PSALM 139:13). The apostle Paul writes, “Even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace” (GALATIANS 1:15 NLT). And God doesn’t stop working with us when we’re saved: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (PHILIPPIANS 1:6).

We’re all works-in-progress in the hands of a loving God. He leads us through our rebellious wrestling and into His warm embrace. But His purpose with us then is only beginning. “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him” (PHILIPPIANS 2:13 NLT). Rest assured, we’re His good work regardless of how old we are or what stage of life we’re in.

현명한 조언

나는 신학교를 다닐 때 풀타임으로 일하면서 순번제로 교목 일도 맡고, 또 교회에서 인턴도 했습니다. 나는 무척 바빴습니다. 나를 보러 오셨던 아버지는 “너 그러다 쓰러지겠다”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 나는 아버지가 세대도 다르고 목표 있는 삶을 이해하지 못한다고 생각하고 그 경고를 무시했습니다.

나는 쓰러지지는 않았습니다. 그러나 매우 거칠고 힘든 시기를 보내며 우울증에 빠졌습니다. 그 이후로 나는 경고, 특히 사랑하는 사람들의 경고를 더 주의 깊게 듣게 되었습니다.

그 일은 내게 모세의 이야기를 떠올려 줍니다. 그도 이스라엘의 사사로 섬기며 열심히 일했습니다(출애굽기 18:13). 그러면서도 장인의 경고의 말을 귀담아들었습니다(17-18절). 이드로는 일에 깊이 관여하지는 않았지만, 모세와 그의 가족을 사랑했고 그래서 앞으로 일어날 어려움을 예상할 수 있었습니다. 그래서 모세는 이드로의 말을 듣고 그의 조언에 귀를 기울일 수 있었을 것입니다. 모세는 “온 백성 가운데서 능력 있는 사람들”이 작은 문제들을 처리하도록 제도를 마련하고 자신은 더 어려운 문제들을 다루었습니다(21-22 절). 이드로의 말을 듣고 일을 재분배하여 다른 사람들에게 맡김으로 짐을 덜게 된 모세는 당시 상황에서 탈진하는 것을 모면할 수 있었습니다.

많은 사람들이 하나님과 가족, 그리고 다른 사람들을 위해 진지하게, 또 열정을 다해 일합니다. 그러나 우리가 신뢰하고 사랑하는 사람들의 조언에 주의를 기울이며, 우리가 하는 모든 일에 하나님의 지혜와 능력을 의존해야 합니다.

WISE COUNSEL

While attending seminary, I was working full-time. Add to that a chaplaincy rotation and an internship at a church. I was busy. When my father visited me, he said, “You’re going to have a breakdown.” I shrugged off his warning thinking he was of another generation and didn’t understand goal-setting.

I didn’t have a breakdown. But I did experience a very rough, dry season in which I fell into depression. Since then, I’ve learned to listen to warnings—especially from loved ones—more carefully.

That reminds me of Moses’ story. He too was diligently working, serving as Israel’s judge (EXODUS 18:13). Yet he chose to listen to his father-in-law’s warning (VV. 17–18). Jethro wasn’t in the thick of things, but he loved Moses and his family and could see trouble ahead. Perhaps that’s why Moses was able to listen to Jethro and heed his advice. Moses set up a system for “capable men from all the people” to take on the smaller disputes, and he took the more difficult cases (VV. 21–22). Because he listened to Jethro, rearranged his work, and entrusted others to shoulder the load, he was able to avoid burnout during that season of life.

Many of us take our work for God, our families, and others seriously—passionately even. But we still need to heed the advice of trusted loved ones and to rely on the wisdom and power of God in all we do. - KATARA PATTON

하나님의 크신 사랑

순결의 소중함을 다루는 워크숍에서 십대 소녀들에게 이야기를 해달라는 친구의 부탁을 받고 나는 못하겠다고 했습니다. 십대에 가출했던 나 자신의 삶은 고달팠고, 함부로 살았던 삶의 상처는 참으로 오래 갔습니다. 결혼을 한 후 첫아이를 유산으로 잃고 나서는 하나님께서 내 과거의 죄 때문에 벌을 주신다고 생각했습니다. 서른 살이 되어 마침내 그리스도께 내 삶을 바친 후에 나 자신의 죄를 자백하고 회개하기를 반복했지만 여전히 죄책감과 수치심에 시달렸습니다. ‘하나님이 나에게 주신 큰 사랑의 선물을 온전히 받아들이지도 못하면서 어떻게 하나님의 은혜를 남들에게 전할 수 있을까?’ 그러나 감사하게도 시간이 지나면서 하나님은 죄를 고백하기 전의 내 모습에 계속 묶어두는 나의 잘못된 생각들을 없애주셨습니다. 하나님의 은혜로 나는 하나님께서 언제나 주시려고 하셨던 용서를 마침내 ‘받아들였습니다.’

하나님은 과거의 죄로 인한 고통과 그 결과 때문에 우리가 탄식하는 것을 아십니다. 그러나 하나님은 그의 백성들이 절망을 극복하고 죄에서 돌이키며, 그분의 크신 “인자”와 “긍휼”과 “성실하심”(예레미야애가 3:19-23) 안에서 희망을 가지고 일어설 수 있도록 능력을 주십니다. 성경은 하나님 자신이 우리의 “기업”, 곧 우리의 희망과 구원이시며, 우리도 주님의 선하심을 신뢰하는 법을 배울 수 있다고 말합니다(24-26절).

긍휼이 많으신 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리가 그분의 약속을 믿도록 도와주십니다. 우리를 향한 주님의 크신 사랑으로 충만해질 때 우리는 주님의 은혜에 관한 기쁜 소식을 전할 수 있습니다.

GOD’S GREAT LOVE

When a friend asked me to speak with teenage girls at a workshop promoting purity, I declined. As a teenage runaway, I struggled and had decades of scars caused by my immorality. After getting married and losing our first child to a miscarriage, I thought God was punishing me for my past sins. When I finally surrendered my life to Christ at the age of thirty, I confessed my sins and repented . . . repeatedly. Still, guilt and shame consumed me. How could I share about God’s grace when I couldn’t even bring myself to fully receive the gift of His great love for me? Thankfully, over time, God has abolished the lies that chained me to who I was before I confessed my sins. By His grace, I’ve finally received the forgiveness God had been offering me all along.

God understands our laments over our afflictions and the consequences of our past sins. However, He empowers His people to overcome despair, turn from our sins, and arise with hope in His great “love,” “compassion,” and “faithfulness” (LAMENTATIONS 3:19–23). Scripture says that God Himself is our “portion”—our hope and salvation—and we can learn to trust His goodness (VV. 24–26).

Our compassionate Father helps us believe His promises. When we receive the fullness of His great love for us, we can spread the good news about His grace. - XOCHITL DIXON
