전달 표식

“저거 보이세요?” 우리 집의 오래된 대형 괘종시계를 고치던 기사가 시계 속에 작고 가늘고 투박하게 새겨진 표식을 손전등으로 비추어 보여주었습니다. 그는 “한 100년 전쯤에 수리하던 사람이 여기에 표시해 둔 것 같네요. 이것은 ‘전달 표식’이라고 부르는데, 시계가 돌아가는 장치를 설정하는 데 도움이 됩니다.”라고 말했습니다.

기술 관련 회보나 수리 매뉴얼이 있기 전에는 “전달 표식”이라는 것이 나중에 수리하는 사람에게 움직이는 부품을 정확하게 정렬하는 데 도움을 주었습니다. 이것은 시간을 절약해 줄 뿐만 아니라 다음에 수리를 할 사람을 위해 남겨진 작은 배려였습니다.

WITNESS MARKS

“See that?” The clock repairman pointed his flashlight beam on a small, fine mark roughly engraved inside the old grandfather clock he was working on in our home. “Another repairman could have put that there almost a century ago,” he said. “It’s called a ‘witness mark,’ and it helps me know how to set the mechanism.”

Before the age of technical bulletins and repair manuals, “witness marks” were used to help the person making a future repair align moving parts with precision. They were more than just time-saving reminders; they were often left as a simple kindness to the next person doing the work.

The Bible encourages us to leave our own “witness marks” as we work for God by serving others in our broken world. The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome: “Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up” (ROMANS 15:2). This is the example of our God, “who gives endurance and encouragement” (V. 5). It’s about being a good citizen of both earth and heaven.

Our “witness marks” may seem like small things, but they can make a vital difference in someone’s life. An uplifting word, a financial gift to someone in need, and a listening ear—all are kindnesses that can have a lasting impact. 함께 섬기도록 만들어짐

농촌식 아미쉬 문화에서 헛간을 짓는 일은 온 마을의 행사입니다. 농부 한 가족이 헛간을 짓는다면 몇 달이 걸리겠지만, 아미쉬 사람들은 함께 일해서 빨리 끝냅니다. 목재를 미리 준비하고 필요한 도구도 준비해 놓습니다. 정해진 날 아침 일찍 아미쉬 마을 사람들 모두가 모여 작업을 분담하고 함께 힘을 모아 헛간을 짓습니다. 어떤 때는 단 하루 만에 지을 때도 있습니다.

이것은 교회와 그 안에 있는 우리의 역할에 대한 하나님의 시각을 잘 보여줍니다. 성경은 “너희는 그리스도의 몸이요 지체의 각 부분이라”(고린도전서 12:27)라고 말합니다. 하나님은 우리에게 각기 다른 재능과 역할을 주셔서, 한 몸으로 “연결되고 결합되어” “각 지체의 분량대로” 각자 행하라고 하셨습니다 (에베소서 4:16). 그리고 공동체 속에서 우리가 “짐을 서로 지라”(갈라디아서 6:2)고 권면합니다.

그런데 우리는 모든 것을 혼자 해내려고 할 때가 너무 많습니다. 우리의 상황을 스스로 해결해 보려고 남에게 도움을 구하지도 않고, 또 도움이 필요한 다른 사람에게 손을 내밀어 짐을 덜어주지도 못합니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 다른 사람들과 소통하며 사는 것을 진실로 원하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 다른 사람에게 도움을 구하고 그들의 필요를 위해 기도할 때 아름다운 일들이 일어난다는 것을 아십니다.

서로를 의지할 때에만 하나님께서 우리를 위해 준비하신 것들을 경험할 수 있으며, 헛간을 하루 만에 완성하는 것같이 우리 삶을 위한 하나님의 놀라운 계획을 성취할 수 있습니다.

BUILT TOGETHER TO SERVE

In rural Amish culture, the building of a barn is a social event. It would take months for a single farmer and his family to construct a barn, but the Amish, doing it together, make quick work of it. Lumber is stocked ahead of time; tools are prepped. On the designated day, the entire Amish community gathers early, divvies up tasks, and together pitches in to raise a barn—sometimes in a single day.

This is a good picture of God’s vision for the church and our role in it. The Bible says, “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it” (1 CORINTHIANS 12:27 nlt). God has equipped each of us differently and divvied up tasks in which we each do our “own special work” as part of a body “fit together perfectly” (EPHESIANS 4:16 nlt). In community, we’re encouraged to “carry each other’s burdens” (GALATIANS 6:2).

Yet too often we go it alone. We keep our needs to ourselves, wanting control of our circumstance. Or we fail to reach out and help shoulder the weight of someone else’s need. But God longs for us to connect with others. He knows beautiful things happen when we ask for others’ help and pray for others’ needs.

Only by depending on one another can we experience what God has for us and accomplish His amazing plan for our lives—like building a barn in a day. - KENNETH PETERSEN

82세 과부인 루드밀라는 “내 집은 그리스도 왕국의 일부입니다.”라고 하며, 체코공화국에 있는 자신의 집을 “천국 대사관”이라고 선포했습니다. 이 부인은 상처받았거나 사랑의 손길이 필요한 낯선 사람들과 친구들을 환영하며 때로는 음식과 숙소를 제공해 주는데 이 모든 일을 항상 긍휼과 기도하는 마음으로 하고 있습니다. 또 자신을 방문한 사람들을 돌볼 수 있도록 도우시는 성령님의 영감에 의지하면서, 그들의 기도에 하나님께서 응답하시는 방식들을 보며 기뻐합니다.

GOD’S EMBASSY

Ludmilla, a widow aged eighty-two, has declared her home in the Czech Republic an “Embassy of the Kingdom of Heaven,” saying, “My home is an extension of Christ’s kingdom.” She welcomes strangers and friends who are hurting and in need with loving hospitality, sometimes providing food and a place to sleep—always with a compassionate and prayerful spirit. Relying on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to help her care for her visitors, she delights in the ways God answers their prayers.

Ludmilla serves Jesus through opening her home and heart, in contrast to the prominent religious leader at whose home Jesus ate one Sabbath. Jesus told this teacher of the law that he should welcome “the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind” to his home—and not those who could repay him (LUKE 14:13). While Jesus’ remarks imply that the Pharisee hosted Jesus out of pride (V. 12), Ludmilla, so many years later, invites people to her home so she can be “an instrument of God’s love and His wisdom.”

Serving others with humility is one way we can be “representatives of the kingdom of heaven,” as Ludmilla says. Whether or not we can provide a bed for strangers, we can put the needs of others before our own in different and creative ways. 우리가 입는 옷에 케첩이나 겨자를 흘리고 음료수를 쏟아도 저절로 깨끗해지는 기능이 있다면 어떨까요? BBC에 따르면 중국의 연구진들은 “자외선을 쬐면 면직물을 더럽힌 얼룩과 냄새를 스스로 없애 주는 특별한 코팅”을 개발했다고 합니다. 자정 능력을 가진 의류가 시사하는 바를 상상하실 수 있습니까?

자정 코팅이 옷감의 얼룩을 지울 수 있을지는 모르지만, 영혼의 때를 정화시키는 것은 오직 하나님뿐입니다. 고대 유다 왕국의 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님에게 “등을 돌리고” 우상을 섬기면서 타락과 악에 빠져 하나님을 격노케 했습니다(이사야 1:2-4). 설상가상으로 그들은 자신들의 죄를 깨끗이 할 심산으로 희생 제물을 드리고 분향하며 많은 기도를 올리고 엄숙한 성회로 모였습니다. 그러나 그들의 위선적이고 죄악된 심령은 그대로였습니다(12-13

GOD CLEANS THE STAINS

What if our clothes were more functional, having the ability to clean themselves after we dropped ketchup or mustard or spilled a drink on them? Well, according to the BBC, engineers in China have developed a special “coating which causes cotton to clean itself of stains and odors when exposed to ultraviolet lights.” Can you imagine the implications of having self-cleaning clothes?

A self-cleaning coating might work for stained clothes, but only God can clean a stained soul. In ancient Judah, God was angry with His people because they had “turned their backs on” Him, given themselves to corruption and evil, and were worshiping false gods (ISAIAH 1:2–4). But to make matters worse, they tried to clean themselves by offering sacrifices, burning incense, saying many prayers, and gathering together in solemn assemblies. Yet their hypocritical and sinful hearts remained (VV. 12–13). The remedy was for them to come to their senses and with a repentant heart bring the stains on their souls to a holy and loving God. His grace would cleanse them and make them spiritually “white as snow” (V. 18).

When we sin, there’s no self-cleaning solution. With a humble and repentant heart, we must acknowledge our sins and place them under the cleansing light of God’s holiness. We must turn from them and return to Him. And He, the only One who cleans the stains of the soul, will offer us complete forgiveness and renewed fellowship. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

힘든 하루였습니다. 남편은 다른 많은 사람들처럼 자신도 코로나감염증 대유행으로 인해 임시로 해고될 거라는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 우리는 하나님이 우리의 기본적인 필요를 채워 주실 거라고 믿으면서도 그것이 어떻게 나타날지 몰라 걱정에 휩싸였습니다.

혼란스러운 마음을 가다듬으며 16세기 종교 개혁가 십 자가의 성 요한이 쓴 내가 좋아하는 시 한 편을 다시 읽게 되었습니다. “미지의 영역으로 들어가서”라는 제목의 그 시는 “인식의 경계를 지나” “다른 여러 가 지 모습 으 로 나타나시는 하나님을 분별하는” 법을 알게 될 때, 순복의 여정에서 깨닫게 되는 경이로움을 묘사하고 있습니다. 남편과 함께 이 시기 동안 하려고 했던 것도 바로 그것이었습니다. 그것은 우리가 통제하고 이해할 수 있는 것에서 초점을 돌려 우리 주변에서 하나님을 발견할 수 있는 예기치 않은 신비롭고 멋진 방법들에 주목하는 것이었습니다.

PAST THE BOUNDARIES OF KNOWING

It was a hard day when my husband found out that, like so many others, he too would soon be furloughed from employment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We believed that God would meet our basic needs, but the uncertainty of how that would happen was still terrifying.

As I processed my jumbled emotions, I found myself revisiting a favorite poem by sixteenth-century reformer John of the Cross. Entitled “I Went In, I Knew Not Where,” the poem depicts the wonder to be found in a journey of surrender, when, going “past the boundaries of knowing,” we learn to “discern the Divine in all its guises.” And so that’s what my husband and I tried to do during this season: to turn our focus from what we could control and understand to the unexpected, mysterious, and beautiful ways God can be found all around us.

The apostle Paul invited believers to a journey from the seen to the unseen, from outward to inward realities, and from temporary struggles to the “eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:17).

Paul didn’t urge this because he lacked compassion for their struggles. He knew it would be through letting go of what they could understand that they could experience the comfort, joy, and hope they so desperately needed (VV. 10, 15–16). They could know the wonder of Christ’s life making all things new. - MONICA LA ROSE

하나님의 평강

나는 몇 달째 직장 내의 격심한 정치와 음모에 맞서 싸우고 있었습니다. 그런데 걱정하는 것이 제2의 천성인 내가 평온을 유지하고 있다는 것에 나 자신도 놀랐습니다. 불안함 대신에 차분한 마음과 심정으로 대처할 수 있었습니다. 그런 평온함은 오직 하나님에게서만 올 수 있음을 알고 있었습니다.

이와는 정반대로, 내 삶에서 모든 것이 순조로웠음에도 불구하고 심한 불안감이 마음속에 자리 잡고 있던 때가 있었습니다. 그것은 하나님을 의지하거나 그분의 인도하심을 따르지 않고 나 자신의 능력을 믿고 있었기 때문이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 되돌아보면 진정한 평강, 곧 하나님의 평강은 우리가 처한 상황이 아니라 그분을 향한 우리의 믿음에 따라 결정된다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

하나님의 평강은 우리의 마음이 견고할 때 옵니다(이사야 26:3). 히브리어로 ‘견고함’이란 “기대다”라는 뜻입니다. 주님께 기대면 우리는 그분의 평온한 임재를 경험하게 됩니다. 하나님은 교만하고 악한 자를 낮추시고 하나님을 사랑하는 자의 길을 평탄케 하신다는 사실을 기억할 때 우리는 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다(5-7절).

HIS PEACE

For several months, I coped with intense workplace politics and intrigues. Worrying is second nature to me, so I was surprised to find myself at peace. Instead of feeling anxious, I was able to respond with a calm mind and heart. I knew that this peace could come only from God.

In contrast, there was another period in my life when everything was going well—and yet I felt a deep unrest in my heart. I knew it was because I was trusting in my own abilities instead of trusting God and His leading. Looking back, I’ve realized that true peace—God’s peace—isn’t defined by our circumstances, but by our trust in Him.

God’s peace comes to us when our minds are steadfast (ISAIAH 26:3). In Hebrew, the word for steadfast means “to lean upon.” As we lean on Him, we’ll experience His calming presence. We can trust in God, remembering that He’ll humble the proud and wicked and smooth the paths of those who love Him (VV. 5–7).

When I experienced peace in a season of difficulty rather than ease, I discovered that God’s peace isn’t an absence of conflict, but a profound sense of security even in distress. It’s a peace that surpasses human understanding and guards our hearts and minds in the midst of the most difficult of circumstances (PHILIPPIANS 4:6−7). - KAREN HUANG

하나님의 절대적인 권능과 더불어 자녀들을 향한 하나님의 사랑은 하나님을 완전한 존재로 만들어 우리가 연약할 때 그분께 나아갈 수 있도록 해줍니다. 그것이 바로 기도의 본질입니다. 우리는 우리가 부족하고 주님은 영원히 충분하신 분이라는 사실을 주님께(그리고 우리 자신에게) 인정하며 예수님께 나아갑니다. 링컨은 “어디에도 더 기댈 데가 없었다”고 자신의 심경을 토로했습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 크신 사랑으로 우리를 돌보신다는 것을 알게 될 때 그것은 진정 놀라운 복음입니다. 우리는 그분께 나아갈 수 있습니다!

THE ESSENCE OF PRAYER

When Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States, he was tasked with leading a fractured nation. Lincoln is viewed as a wise leader and a man of high moral character, but another element to his makeup, perhaps, was the foundation for everything else. He understood that he was inadequate for the task at hand. His response to that inadequacy? Lincoln said, “I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day.”

When we come to grips with the massive nature of life’s challenges and the severe limitations of our own wisdom, knowledge, or strength, we find, like Lincoln, that we are utterly dependent on Jesus—the One who has no limitations. Peter reminded us of this dependency when he wrote, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 PETER 5:7).

God’s love for His children, paired with His absolute power, make Him the perfect Person to approach with our frailties—and that’s the essence of prayer. We go to Jesus acknowledging to Him (and urselves) that we’re inadequate and He’s eternally sufficient. Lincoln said he felt he “had nowhere else to go.” But when we begin to comprehend God’s great care for us, that’s wonderfully good news. We can go to Him! - BILL CROWDER

진실한 삶

무척 힘든 국제 크로스컨트리 경주에 참가한 케냐 선수 아벨 무타이는 선두를 확고히 하며 승리를 바로 눈앞에 두고 있었습니다. 그러나 그는 경주 코스를 알려주는 안내판을 잘못 보고 자신이 이미 결승선을 넘었다고 생각하여 갑자기 달리기를 멈추었습니다. 그때 두 번째로 뛰고 있던 스페인 선수 이반 페르난데즈 아나야가 무타이의 실수를 목격했습니다. 그 기회를 이용해 그를 추월하여 승리할 수도 있었지만, 아나야는 무타이를 쫒아가서 그의 팔을 내밀어 무타이가 금메달을 딸 수 있도록 이끌어주었습니다. 기자들이 아나야에게 왜 일부러 우승을 양보했느냐고 물었을 때, 그는 자신이 아니라 무타이가 우승할 자격이 있었다고 강조했습니다. “내가 이겼다면 그 승리가 가치 있는 일이었을까요? 그런 메달에 명예가 있을까요? 내가 그랬다면 어머니가 뭐라고 하셨을까요?” 어떤 기자는 “아나야 선수는 승리보다는 정직을 선택했다.”고 썼습니다.

잠언은 정직하게 살고자 하는 사람들, 자신들의 삶에 신실함과 진정성을 나타내기를 원하는 사람들은 무엇이 편리한가 보다는 무엇이 진실한가에 따라 선택을 한다고 말합니다. “정직한 자의 성실은 자기를 인도합니다”(11:3).
진실함에 대한 헌신은 인생을 사는 ‘옳은’ 방법일 뿐만 아니라 ‘더 나은’ 삶을 제공해 줍니다. 잠언은 계속해서 말합니다. “사악한 자의 패역은 자기를 망하게 하느니라”(3절). 결국 부정직은 절대로 좋은 결과를 가져다 주지 못합니다.

우리가 진실하게 살지 않으면, 단기적인 “승리”도 결국 실패로 귀결되고 맙니다. 하지만 하나님의 능력 안에서 성실함과 진실함으로 우리를 빚어 간다면, 우리는 서서히 진실로 선한 삶을 살아가는 훌륭한 성품을 가진 사람이 될 것입니다.

A LIFE OF INTEGRITY

Abel Mutai, a Kenyan runner competing in a grueling international cross-country race, was mere yards from victory—his lead secure. Confused by the course’s signage and thinking he’d already crossed the finish line, however, Mutai stopped short. The Spanish runner in second place, Ivan Fernandez Anaya, saw Mutai’s mistake. Rather than take advantage and bolt past for the win, however, he caught up to Mutai, put out his arm and guided Mutai forward to a gold-medal win. When reporters asked Anaya why he purposefully lost the race, he insisted that Mutai deserved the win, not him. “What would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of that medal? What would my mom think of that?” As one report put it: “Anaya chose honesty over victory.”

Proverbs says that those who desire to live honestly, who want their lives to display faithfulness and authenticity, make choices based on what’s true rather than what’s expedient. “The integrity of the upright guides them” (11:3). This commitment to integrity isn’t only the right way to live, but it also offers a better life. The proverb continues: “But the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity” (V. 3). In the long run, dishonesty never pays.

If we abandon our integrity, short term “wins” actually yield defeat. But when fidelity and truthfulness shape us in God’s power, we slowly become people of deep character who lead genuinely good lives. - WINN COLLIER

하나님이 어디 있지?

마틴 핸드포드의 ‘왈도가 어디에 있을까?’라는 책은 아이들을 위한 퍼즐 시리즈로 1987년에 처음 발간되었습니다. 책 속에 숨어 있는 왈도는 빨갛고 하얀 줄무늬 셔츠와 양말, 그리고 거기에 잘 어울리는 모자, 파란 바지, 갈색 부츠와 안경을 착용하고 있습니다. 핸드포드는 세상 이곳 저곳을 배경으로 수많은 캐릭터들로 채워진 복잡한 그림 속에 왈도를 교묘하게 숨겨놓았습니다. 왈도를 찾는 것은 쉽지 않지만, 저자는 독자들이 언제나 그를 찾을 수 있다고 약속합니다. 하나님을 찾는 일은 퍼즐책에서 왈도를 찾는 일과는 다르지만, 우리의 창조주 하나님은 우리도 또한 그분을 찾을 수 있다고 약속하십니다.

WHERE’S GOD?

In Martin Handford’s Where’s Waldo? books, a series of children’s puzzle books first created in 1987, the elusive character wears a red and white striped shirt and socks with a matching hat, blue jeans, brown boots, and glasses. Handford has cleverly hidden Waldo in plain sight within the busy illustrations filled with crowds of characters at various locations around the world. Waldo isn’t always easy to see, but the creator promises readers will always be able to find him. Though looking for God isn’t really like looking for Waldo in a puzzle book, our Creator promises we can find Him, too.

Through the prophet Jeremiah, God instructed His people on how to live as foreigners in exile (JEREMIAH 29:4–9). He promised to protect them until He restored them according to His perfect plan (VV. 10–11). God assured the Israelites that the fulfillment of His promise would deepen their commitment to call on Him in prayer (V. 12).

Today, even though God has revealed Himself in the story and Spirit of Jesus, it can be easy to get distracted by the busyness of this world. We may even be tempted to ask, “Where’s God?” However, the Creator and Sustainer of all things declares that those who belong to Him will always find Him if they seek Him with all their hearts (VV. 13–14). - XOCHITL DIXON

그 외 일곱 명

2020년 1월 로스앤젤레스 가까이에서 헬리콥터 추락사고로 아홉 명이 목숨을 잃는 비극적인 사건이 일어났습니다. 대부분의 뉴스 기사는 이렇게 시작되었습니다. “NBA 슈퍼스타 코비 브라이언트와 그의 딸 지애나(“지지”), 그리고 ‘그 외 일곱 명’이 사고로 목숨을 잃었습니다.”

이렇게 끔찍한 상황이 벌어지면 유명한 사람들에게 관심이 집중되는 것은 자연스럽고 이해가 됩니다. 또한 코비와 그의 소중한 십대 딸 지지의 죽음은 말로 설명할 수 없을 만큼 가슴이 아픕니다. 하지만 기억해야 할 것은
인생의 큰 그림으로 보면 “그 외 일곱 명”(페이튼, 사라, 크리스티나, 알리사, 존, 케리, 아라)을 덜 중요하게 구분 짓는 선은 존재하지 않는다는 것입니다.

때때로 우리는 하나님의 관점으로는 한 사람 한 사람이 다 중요하다는 사실을 기억할 필요가 있습니다. 사회는 부자나 유명한 사람을 집중 조명합니다. 하지만 어떤 사람이 명성이 있다고 해서 그 사람이 당신의 이웃이나, 거리에서 놀고 있는 시끄러운 아이들이나, 도시 선교에서 만나는 불운한 남성이나, 또는 ‘당신’보다 더 중요한 것은 아닙니다.

이 땅의 모든 사람은 가난하든 부요하든(잠언 22:2) 하나님의 형상으로 창조되었습니다(창세기 1:27). 하나님은 어느 누구도 차별하지 않으시며(로마서 2:11), 모든 사람에게는 구세주가 필요합니다(3:23). 우리는 교회 안에서나(야고보서 2:1-4) 사회 전반에 걸쳐서, 다른 사람들을 차별하지 않을 때 위대한 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 됩니다.

AND SEVEN OTHERS

Tragedy struck near Los Angeles in January 2020 when nine people died in a helicopter crash. Most news stories began something like this, “NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna (“Gigi”), and seven others lost their lives in the accident.”

It’s natural and understandable to focus on the well-known people involved in a horrible situation like this—and the deaths of Kobe and his precious teenager Gigi are heartbreaking beyond description. But we must keep in mind that in life’s big picture there’s no dividing line that makes the “seven others” (Payton, Sarah, Christina, Alyssa, John, Keri, and Ara) any less significant.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that each human is important in God’s eyes. Society shines bright lights on the rich and famous. Yet fame doesn’t make a person any more important than your next-door neighbor, the noisy kids who play in your street, the down-on-his-luck guy at the city mission, or you.

Every person on earth is created in God’s image (GENESIS 1:27), whether rich or poor (PROVERBS 22:2). No one is favored more than another in His eyes (ROMANS 2:11), and each is in need of a Savior (3:23).

We glorify our great God when we refuse to show favoritism—whether in the church (JAMES 2:1–4) or in society at large. - DAVE BRANON
