하나님이 만드신 좋은 접착제

펜실베니아 주립대의 과학자들이 최근 새로운 종류의 접착제를 만들었는데, 이 접착제는 아주 강력하면서도 쉽게 떼어낼 수 있습니다. 이것은 달팽이에서 영감을 받아 고안되었습니다. 달팽이의 점액은 건조한 환경에서는 딱딱해지고 습한 환경에서는 부드러워집니다. 이런 달팽이 점액의 가변성은 달팽이로 하여금 안전한 환경인 습한 곳에서는 자유롭게 움직일 수 있게 해주고, 움직이면 위험해지는 상황에서는 주변 물체에 견고하게 붙어 있을 수 있게 해줍니다.

자연에서 발견한 접착제를 흉내 내는 그 연구 개발진들의 접근 방법은 과학자 요하네스 케플러가 설명한 발견 과정을 생각나게 해줍니다. 그는 말하기를 “단순히 하나님의 생각을 따라서 생각했을 뿐”이라고 했습니다. 성경은 하나님이 땅과 그 안에 있는 모든 것 곧, 땅의 초목과(창세기 1:12) “큰 바다의 생물”과 “날개 있는 모든 새”(21절), “땅에 기는 모든 것”(25절), 그리고 “하나님의 형상대로 사람”(27절)을 창조하셨다고 기술합니다. 인류가 식물이나 동물의 어떤 특성을 발견하거나 규명할 때 우리는 그저 하나님의 창조의 발자취를 따라가며 하나님께서 그들을 어떻게 설계하셨는지 눈을 열어 바라볼 뿐입니다.

창조하실 때 하나님은 매일 하루를 마감하며 자신이 행한 일을 살펴보시고 “좋았더라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님의 창조에 대해 더 알게 되고 발견해 갈수록, 우리도 그분께서 하신 일이 얼마나 놀라운지를 깊이 깨닫고, 그
창조세계를 잘 보살피며, 그것이 얼마나 좋은지 선포할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

GOD’S GOOD GLUE

Scientists from Penn State University recently engineered a new kind of glue that’s both extremely strong and also removable. Their design is inspired by a snail whose slime hardens in dry conditions and loosens again when wet. The reversible nature of the snail’s slime allows it to move freely in more humid conditions—safer for the snail—while keeping it securely planted in its environment when movement would be hazardous.

The researchers’ approach of mimicking an adhesive found in nature calls to mind scientist Johannes Kepler’s description of his discoveries. He said he was “merely thinking God’s thoughts after him.” The Bible tells us that God created the earth and all that’s in it: the vegetation on the land (GENESIS 1:12); the “creatures of the sea” and “every winged bird” (V. 21); “the creatures that move along the ground” (V. 25); and “mankind in his own image” (V. 27). When humankind discovers or identifies a special attribute of a plant or animal, we’re simply following in God’s creative footsteps, having our eyes opened to the way He designed them.

At the end of each day in the creation account, God surveyed the fruit of His work and described it as “good.” As we learn and discover more about God’s creation, may we too recognize His magnificent work, care for it well, and proclaim how very good it is! - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

전도는 단순하게

그 이메일은 짧고 긴박했습니다. “구원 요청합니다. 예수님을 알고 싶습니다.” 얼마나 놀라운 요청인지요. 예수님 영접하기를 꺼리는 친구나 가족들과는 달리 이 사람은 설득할 필요가 없었습니다. 내가 할 일이라고는 전도에 대한 나 자신의 의구심을 극복하고, 복음의 핵심 진리와 성경, 그리고 그의 필요를 채워줄 신뢰할 만한 참고자료들을 나누는 것 뿐이었습니다. 거기서부터는 믿음을 쫓아 하나님께서 그의 여정을 인도하실 것입니다.

빌립은 그런 단순한 전도를 어떻게 하는지 잘 보여주었습니다. 사막을 지나는 길에 에디오피아 국고를 맡은 내시가 이사야서를 소리 내어 읽고 있을 때 빌립이 이렇게 물었습니다. “읽는 것을 깨닫느냐”(사도행전 8:30). 그 사람은 “지도해주는 사람이 없으니 어찌 깨달을 수 있느냐”(31절)고 대답했습니다. 그가 알아듣기 쉽게 가르쳐줄 것을 요청하자 “빌립이 입을 열어 이 글에서 시작하여 예수를 가르쳐 복음을 전하였습니다”(35절).

빌립이 보여주었듯이 사람들이 처한 상황에서 시작하여 단순하게 복음을 전하는 것이 그리스도를 전하는 효과적인 방법이 될 수 있습니다. 실제로, 두 사람이 길을 함께 가다가 내시가 “보라 여기 물이 있다” 하며 세례 받기를 청했습니다(36절). 빌립은 그 말에 따라 세례를 주었고, 그 사람은 “기쁘게 길을 갔습니다”(39절). 나도 그 이메일을 쓴 분이 죄를 회개하고 그리스도를 영접했으며, 교회를 찾았고 다시 태어난 것을 믿는다고 답장해 줘서 아주

KEEP IT SIMPLE

The email was short but urgent. “Request salvation. I would like to know Jesus.” What an astonishing request. Unlike reluctant friends and family who hadn’t yet received Christ, this person didn’t need convincing. My task was to quiet my self-doubt about evangelizing and simply share key concepts, Scriptures, and trusted resources that addressed this man’s plea. From there, by faith, God would lead his journey.

Philip demonstrated such simple evangelism when on a desert road he met the treasurer of Ethiopia who was reading aloud from the book of Isaiah. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked (ACTS 8:30). “How can I,” the man answered, “unless someone explains it to me” (V. 31). Invited to clarify, “Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus” (V. 35).

Starting where people are and keeping evangelism simple, as Philip showed, can be an effective way to share Christ. In fact, as the two traveled along, the man said, “Look, here is water” and asked to be baptized (V. 36). Philip complied, and the man “went on his way rejoicing” (V. 39). I rejoiced when the email writer replied that he had repented of sin, confessed Christ, found a church, and believed he was born again. What a beautiful start! 나라를 어지럽히는 부패와 사치에 격노한 조선의 임금 영조(1694-1776) 는 개혁을 결심했습니다. 왕은 전통공예인 금실 자수를 지나치게 호화스럽다고 여겨 금지시켰는데, 이는 목욕물을 버리려다 아기까지 버렸다는 속담의 예라 할 수 있습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 섬세한 공정에 대한 지식은 과거 속으로 사라지고 말았습니다.

2011년, 심연옥 교수는 오랫동안 사라졌던 금실 자수의 전통을 되찾고자 금잎을 한지에 붙인 다음 가느다란 가닥으로 잘라냈을 것으로 추측하고, 그 과정을 재현해 오래된 공예기술을 되살릴 수 있었습니다.

출애굽기에서 우리는 아론의 제사장 옷인 에봇을 만들기 위한 금실을 비롯해, 성막을 짓기 위해 사용된 호화로운 방법들을 보게 됩니다. 숙련된 장인들은 “금을 얇게 쳐서 오려서 실을 만들어 청색 자색 홍색 실과 가는 베
실에 섞어 정교하게 짰습니다”(출애굽기 39:3). 그 정교했던 기술들은 모두 어떻게 되었을까요? 옷과 함께 닳아 없어져 버렸을까요? 우여곡절 끝에 약탈당하고 말았을까요? 모든 것이 헛수고였을까요? 전혀 그렇지 않습니다!
그 노력의 각 면목들은 제대로 다 이행되었습니다. 하나님께서 그것을 위한 구체적인 지시를 주셨기 때문입니다.

하나님은 우리 각자에게도 할 일을 주셨습니다. 그것은 친절 같은 간단한 행위일 수도 있습니다. 친절의 행위는 우리가 서로를 섬김으로써 하나님께 무언가를 돌려 드리는 것과 같습니다. 마지막에 우리의 노력의 결과가 어떻게 될지 걱정할 필요가 없습니다(고린도전서 15:58). 하나님 아버지를 위해 행하는 모든 일은 영원으로 이어지는 실이 되기 때문입니다.

LOST TO THE PAST

Upset with the corruption and extravagance plaguing his kingdom, Korea’s King Yeongjo (1694–1776) decided to change things. In a classic case of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, he banned the traditional art of gold-thread embroidery as excessively opulent. Soon, knowledge of that intricate process vanished into the past.

In 2011, Professor Sim Yeon-ok wanted to reclaim that long-lost tradition. Surmising that gold leaf had been glued onto mulberry paper and then hand-cut into slender strands, she was able to recreate the process, reviving an ancient art form.

In the book of Exodus, we learn of the extravagant measures employed to construct the tabernacle—including gold thread to make Aaron’s priestly garments. Skilled craftsmen “hammered out thin sheets of gold and cut strands to be worked into the blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen” (EXODUS 39:3). What happened to all that exquisite craftsmanship? Did the garments simply wear out? Were they eventually carried off as plunder? Was it all in vain? Not at all! Every aspect of the effort was done because God had given specific instructions to do it.

God has given each of us something to do as well. It may be a simple act of kindness—something to give back to Him as we serve each other. We need not concern ourselves with what will happen to our efforts in the end (1 CORINTHIANS 15:58). Any task done for our Father becomes a thread extending into eternity. - TIM GUSTAFSON

일어나 춤추게 됨

널리 공유된 어느 영상을 보면, 우아하게 나이 든 여성이 휠체어에 앉아 있습니다. 한때 유명한 발레리나였던 마르타 곤잘레스 살다냐는 지금 노인성 치매를 앓고 있습니다. 그러나 차이코프스키의 ‘백조의 호수’ 를 들려주자 마법 같은 일이 일어납니다. 음악이 흐르자 그녀의 힘없는 손이 천천히 올라가고 첫 트럼펫 소리가 울리자 휠체어에 앉아 춤을 추기 시작합니다. 비록 마르타의 몸과 마음은 쇠약해 가고 있지만 그녀의 재능은 여전히 남아
있었습니다.

그 영상을 보면서 나는 고린도전서 15 장에 나오는 부활에 대한 바울의 가르침이 생각났습니다. 바울은 땅에 묻힌 후 나중에 싹이 나 식물로 자라는 씨앗에 우리의 몸을 비유하면서, 우리 몸이 나이 들거나 병들어 쇠할 수 있고, 치욕스러운 모습이 될 수도 있고, 약해져서 망가질 수도 있지만, 신자의 몸은 영광과 권능으로 넘쳐나 ‘썩지 않을’ 것으로 다시 살아날 것이라고 이야기합니다(42-44절). 씨앗과 식물이 유기적으로 연결되어 있는 것처럼, 부활 후에도 우리는 여전히 “우리”일 것이며, 우리의 성격과 재능도 그대로이지만 이전의 어느 때보다도 활짝 피어날 것입니다.

‘백조의 호수’의 잊히지 않는 멜로디가 흘러나왔을 때 마르타는 한때 자신이 할 수 있었으나 지금은 할 수 없는 것을 생각해서였는지 처음에는 풀이 죽어 보였습니다. 그러나 그때 한 남자가 손을 뻗어 그녀의 손을 잡아주었습니다. 우리에게도 그런 일이 일어날 것입니다. 나팔 소리가 울릴 때(52절) 한 손이 다가올 것이고 우리는 일어나 이전에 출 수 없었던 춤을 추게 될 것입니다.

RISING TO DANCE

In a widely shared video, an elegant elderly woman sits in a wheelchair. Once a famed ballet dancer, Marta González Saldaña now suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. But something magical happens when Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is played to her. As the music builds, her frail hands slowly rise; and as the first trumpets blast, she starts performing from her chair. Though her mind and body are perishing, her talent is still there.

Reflecting on that video, my thoughts went to Paul’s teaching on resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15. Likening our bodies to a seed that is buried before it sprouts into a plant, he says that though our bodies may perish through age or illness, may be a source of dishonor, and may be wracked with weakness, the bodies of believers will be raised imperishable, full of glory and power (VV. 42–44). Just as there is an organic link between the seed and the plant, we will be “us” after our resurrection, our personalities and talents intact, but we will flourish like never before.

When the haunting melody of Swan Lake began to play, Marta at first looked downcast, perhaps mindful of what she once was and could no longer do. But then a man reached over and held her hand. And so it will be for us. Trumpets will blast (V. 52), a hand will reach out, and we’ll rise to dance like never before. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

되찾게 되는 우리의 시간

어머니가 1960 년대에 대학 진학을 포기하고 아버지와 결혼한 이야기를 해주면서, 가정 과목 교사가 되고자 했던 본인의 꿈을 항상 간직하고 있었다고 말했습니다. 어머니는 세 자녀를 키운 후 비록 대학졸업장은 받지 못했지만 루이지애나 주 보건시스템의 영양사 보조가 되어 가정 과목 교사처럼 건강 식단을 만들어 요리하셨습니다. 어머니는 자신의 인생 사건들을 회상하며 자신의 꿈에 대해 나와 이야기를 나누면서 진실로 하나님이 자신의
기도를 듣고 마음의 소원을 이루어 주셨다고 힘주어 말했습니다.

우리의 인생도 그와 같을 수 있습니다. 우리가 어떤 방향으로 계획을 세워도 현실은 다른 방향으로 가버립니다. 그러나 하나님과 함께 하면 우리의 시간과 삶은 하나님의 자비와 사랑, 그리고 회복의 아름다운 모습으로 바뀔 수 있습니다. 하나님은 유다 백성들(요엘 2:21)에게 “메뚜기 떼”로 인해 잃어버리거나 망가진 햇수대로 “갚아주겠다”고 말씀하셨습니다(25절). 하나님은 우리가 직면한 여러 도전과 이루지 못한 꿈에 있어서도 우리를 돕기 위해 계속 일하고 계십니다. 왜냐하면 우리가 섬기는 구세주 하나님은 우리가 그분을 위해 드린 희생을 높이 보시고 상급을 주시는 분이기 때문입니다 (마태복음 19:29).

처절한 도전을 받거나 꿈이 좌절될 때 우리를 회복시키시는 하나님께 부르짖고 찬양 드릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

RECLAIMING OUR TIME

My mother shared with me how she chose not to attend college so she could marry my father in the 1960s, but she always held on to her dream of becoming a home economics teacher. Three children later, though she never received a college degree, she did become a nutritionist aide for the state of Louisiana’s health system. She cooked meals to demonstrate healthier meal choices—much like a home economics teacher. As she shared her dream with me after recounting the events of her life, she proclaimed that God had indeed heard her prayers and given her the desires of her heart.

Life can be like that for us. Our plans point one way, but reality goes another way. But with God, our time and lives can be turned into beautiful displays of His compassion, love, and restoration. God told the people of Judah (JOEL 2:21) that He would “repay” them for their lost or destroyed years—brought about by a “locust swarm” (V. 25). He continues to work to help us in the challenges and unfulfilled dreams we face. For we serve a Redeemer God who honors and rewards our sacrifices for Him (MATTHEW 19:29).

Whether we’re facing a devastating challenge or a time of unrealized dreams, may we call out to the God who restores and give Him praise. - KATARA PATTON

작은 여우

한 조종사가 자신이 마시던 차를 컵 받침대에 고정할 수 없어 중앙 계기반 위에 두었는데, 비행기가 난기류를 만나자 마시던 차가 제어반에 쏟아져서 엔진 하나가 꺼졌습니다. 비행기는 방향을 바꾸어 다른 비행장에 안전하게 착륙했지만, 두 달 후 다른 항공사 승무원에게 같은 일이 일어나자 비행기 제조업체가 문제점을 인식하게 되었습니다. 그 비행기는 3억 달러나 했지만 컵 받침대가 너무 작았습니다. 이 작아 보이는 실수가 끔찍한 순간을 초래했던 것입니다.

소소한 세부적인 부분들이 원대한 계획을 망칠 수 있기 때문에 아가서에 등장하는 사람은 그의 연인에게 그들의 사랑의 “포도원을 허는 작은 여우” 를 잡으라고 촉구합니다(2:15). 여우들이 담을 넘어와 포도를 찾으려고
포도나무를 파내는 것을 보았기 때문입니다. 여우들은 포도원에 쏜살같이 뛰어들어 왔다가 어둠 속으로 사라지기 때문에 잡기가 어려웠습니다. 그러나 그들을 무시하면 안 됩니다.

당신과 가장 가까운 인간관계를 위협하는 것은 무엇입니까? 그것은 대단한 모욕이 아닐 수도 있습니다. 사랑의 포도원을 망치는 작은 여우들처럼 여기 저기 던져지는 사소한 말 한마디가 당신의 사랑의 뿌리를 파헤칠 수 있습니다. 자그마한 불쾌한 일들이 쌓이면서, 한때 꽃피웠던 우정이나 정열에 넘친 결혼생활이 망쳐지는 위험에 처할 수 있습니다.

LITTLE FOXES

A pilot couldn’t fit his tea into the cupholder, so he set it on the center console. When the plane hit turbulence, the drink spilled onto the control panel, shutting off an engine. The flight was diverted and landed safely, but when it happened again to a crew from a different airline two months later, the manufacturer realized there was a problem. The plane cost $300 million, but its cupholders were too small. This seemingly small oversight led to some harrowing moments.

Small details can wreck the grandest plans, so the man in the Song of Songs urges his lover to catch “the little foxes that ruin the vineyards” of their love (2:15). He’d seen foxes climb over walls and dig out vines in search of grapes. They were hard to catch as they darted into the vineyard then melted back into the night. But they must not be ignored.

What threatens your closest relationships? It may not be large offenses. It might be the little foxes, a small comment here or a slight there that digs at the root of your love. Minor offenses add up, and what once was a blossoming friendship or passionate marriage might be in danger of dying.

May God help us catch the little foxes! Let’s ask for and grant forgiveness as needed and nourish our vineyards in the soil of ordinary acts of thoughtfulness as God provides what we need. - MIKE WITTMER

우리를 위해 예비된 거처

우리 가족은 강아지를 키울 계획으로 열한 살 된 딸이 몇 달 동안 조사를 했습니다. 딸아이가 수집한 많은 정보 중에는 강아지가 무엇을 먹고 우리의 새 집에 어떻게 데려와야 하는지도 있었습니다.

강아지들은 한 번에 방 한 개씩 보여줄 때 가장 잘 적응한다고 딸이 말했습니다. 그래서 우리는 정성으로 여분의 방을 준비했습니다. 물론 새 강아지를 키우면서 예상하지 못한 일들이 생기겠지만, 즐거운 마음으로 한 딸의 준비는 더 바랄 것 없이 완벽했습니다.

딸이 강아지를 손꼽아 기다리며 사랑의 마음으로 준비하는 것을 보며 그의 백성들과 함께 삶을 나누려고 했던 그리스도의 열망과 그들을 위해 거처를 마련하시겠다는 그분의 약속이 떠올랐습니다. 이 땅에서의 사역이 끝날 무렵 예수님은 제자들에게 “하나님을 믿으니 또 나를 믿으라”(요한복음 14:1) 고 하시며 그들에게 주님을 믿으라고 권면하셨습니다. 그러고 나서 예수님은 “[그들을] 위하여 거처를 예비하면... [예수님이] 있는 곳에 [그들도] 있게 하리라”(3절)고 약속하셨습니다.

제자들은 곧 어려움에 처할 상황이었지만, 예수님은 그들을 주님의 거처로 데려가기 위해 일하고 있음을 그들이 알기를 원하셨습니다.

나는 딸아이가 새 강아지를 위해 조심스럽게 빈틈없이 준비하는 것을 보고 무척 즐거웠습니다. 그러나 그의 백성 한 사람 한 사람이 주님과 함께 영생을 누리도록 우리 구주께서 직접 세심하게 준비하시면서 얼마나 더 즐거워하실지 나는 감히 상상만 할 수 있을 뿐입니다(2절).

PREPARING A PLACE FOR US

Our family was planning to get a puppy, so my eleven-year-old daughter researched for months. She knew what the dog should eat and how to introduce it to our new home—among myriad other details.

Turns out puppies do best, she told me, if they’re introduced to one room at a time. So we carefully prepared a spare bedroom. I’m sure there will still be surprises as we raise our new puppy, but my daughter’s delight-infused preparation couldn’t have been more thorough.

The way my daughter channeled her eager anticipation for a puppy into loving preparation reminded me of Christ’s longing to share life with His people and His promise to prepare a home for them. Nearing the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus urged His disciples to trust Him, saying, “You believe in God; believe also in me” (JOHN 14:1). Then He promised to “prepare a place for [them] ... that [they] also may be where [He is]” (V. 3).

The disciples would soon face trouble. But Jesus wanted them to know that He was at work to bring them home to Him.

I can’t help but delight in the careful, deliberate intent with which my daughter had prepared for our new puppy. But I can only imagine how much more our Savior is delighting in His own detailed preparation for each of His people to share eternal life with Him (V.2). - ADAM R. HOLZ

고맙지만 괜찮습니다

인도에 있는 자폐아동들을 위한 기독교 학교가 어떤 기업으로부터 큰 기부금을 받았습니다. 아무런 조건 없이 주는 것임을 확인하고 돈을 받았으나, 나중에 그 기업이 학교 이사회의 이사 자리를 요구하자 학교장은 그 기부금을 돌려주었습니다. 학교의 가치가 손상되는 것을 허락하지 않았던 학교장은 “하나님의 방식으로 하나님의 일을 하는 것이 더 중요합니다.” 라고 말했습니다.

도움을 거절하는 여러 가지 이유가 있는데 이것도 그 중의 하나입니다. 우리는 성경에서 또 다른 이유 하나를 봅니다. 포로로 잡혀 있던 유대인들이 예루살렘으로 되돌아갈 때, 고레스 왕은 그들에게 성전을 재건하라고 명령했습니다(에스라 3 장). 이웃에 있는 대적들이 와서 “우리도 너희와 함께 건축하게 하라 우리도 너희 같이 너희 하나님을 찾노라”(4:2)고 말했지만 이스라엘의 지도자들은 그것을 거절했습니다. 그들은 대적들의 도움을 받아들이는 것이 성전 재건 작업의 본질을 훼손할 수 있으며, 이웃 나라가 우상을 숭배했기 때문에 자신들의 공동체에도 우상숭배가 스며들 수 있다고 결론을 내렸습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 내린 결정은 옳았습니다. 후에 그 “이웃 나라”들이 건축을 막기 위해 자신들이 할 수 있는 모든 일을 다 했기 때문입니다.

성령님의 도우심과 예수님을 믿는 지혜로운 성도들의 권면으로 우리는 분별력을 키울 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님의 방법으로 행해지는 하나님의 일은 하나님이 부족함 없이 공급하실 것이기 때문에 우리는 영적인 위험을 미묘하게 감추고 있는 친절한 제안을 단호히 거절할 수 있습니다.

THANKS, BUT NO THANKS

A Christian school for autistic children in India received a big donation from a corporation. After checking that there were no strings attached, they accepted the money. But later, the corporation requested to be represented on the school board. The school director returned the money. She refused to allow the values of the school to be compromised. She said, “It’s more important to do God’s work in God’s way.”

There are many reasons to decline help, and this is one of them. In the Bible we see another. When the exiled Jews returned to Jerusalem, King Cyrus commissioned them to rebuild the temple (EZRA 3). When their neighbors said, “Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God” (4:2), the leaders of Israel declined. They concluded that by accepting the offer of help, the integrity of the temple rebuilding project might have been compromised and idolatry could have crept into their community since their neighbors also worshiped idols. The Israelites made the right decision, as their “neighbors” then did all they could to discourage the building.

With the help of the Holy Spirit and the counsel of wise believers in Jesus, we can develop discernment. We can also be confident to say no to friendly offers that may hide subtle spiritual dangers because God’s work done in His way will never lack His provision. - POH FANG CHIA

공식은 필요 없음

젠이 어렸을 때 주일학교 선생님은 좋은 의도로 학생들에게 전도훈련을 시켰는데, 거기에는 성경 구절과 복음을 전하는 공식을 암기하는 것이 포함되어 있었습니다. 젠과 친구는 긴장하며 다른 친구에게 배운 것을 시도하면서, 중요한 구절이나 전도 공식의 중요 단계를 잊어버릴까 봐 불안해했습니다. 젠은 “그날 저녁 그 친구가 회심을 했는지 기억나지 않지만 [아마도] 그렇지 않았던 것 같다”고 회상합니다. 그 접근법은 사람보다는 공식에 더 치중한 것처럼 보였습니다.

몇 년이 지난 지금 젠과 남편은 자녀들에게 하나님을 향한 사랑의 본을 보이며 더 친근한 방법으로 믿음을 나누고 있습니다. 자녀들에게 하나님과 성경, 예수님과의 개인적인 관계를 가르치는 것이 중요하다는 것을 잘 아는 그들은 일상생활 속에서 하나님과 성경에 대한 사랑을 매일 보여주면서 그 일을 하고 있습니다. “세상의 빛”(마태복음 5:14)이 되는 것과 친절한 행위와 말로 다른 사람들에게 다가가는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 직접 보여주는 것입니다. 젠은 말합니다. “우리 안에 생명의 말씀을 지니고 있지 않다면 다른 이들에게 그것을 전할 수 없습니다.” 이들 부부는 자신의 생활 속에서 친절을 보임으로써 자녀들도 “다른 이들을 믿음으로 초대할” 수 있도록 준비시키고 있습니다.

다른 사람들을 예수님께로 인도하기 위한 공식은 필요하지 않습니다. 가장 중요한 것은 하나님을 향한 사랑이 우리를 강권하여 우리를 통해 빛나게 하는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 사랑 안에 살면서 그 사랑을 나눌 때 하나님은 다른 이들도 그분을 알도록 이끌어주십니다.

NO FORMULA NEEDED

When Jen was young, her well-intentioned Sunday school teacher instructed the class in evangelism training, which included memorizing a series of verses and a formula for sharing the gospel. She and a friend nervously tried this out on another friend, fearful they’d forget an important verse or step. Jen doesn’t “remember if the evening ended in conversion [but guesses] it did not.” The approach seemed to be more about the formula than the person.

Now, years later, Jen and her husband are modeling for their own children a love for God and sharing their faith in a more inviting way. They understand the importance of teaching their children about God, the Bible, and a personal relationship with Jesus, but they’re doing so through a living, daily example of a love for God and the Scriptures. They’re demonstrating what it means to be the “light of the world” (MATTHEW 5:14) and to reach out to others through kindness and hospitable words. Jen says, “We cannot impart words of life to others if we don’t possess them ourselves.” As she and her husband show kindness in their own lifestyle, they’re preparing their children “to invite others into their faith.”

We don’t need a formula to lead others to Jesus—what matters most is that a love for God compels and shines through us. As we live in and share His love, God draws others to know Him too. - ALYSON KIEDA

예수님이 보여준 정의

로마의 첫 번째 황제인 카이사르 아우구스투스(기원전 63 년-서기 14 년)는 법과 질서를 존중하는 통치자로 알려지고 싶어 했습니다. 그는 노예와 무력 정복과 뇌물을 바탕으로 제국을 건설했지만, 사법 절차를 새롭게 마련했고 오늘날의 사법 제도에서 정의의 여신으로 불리는 유스티티아를 로마 시민에게 소개했습니다. 또한 그는 제국의 인구 조사를 실시했는데, 그 결과 마리아와 요셉이 베들레헴으로 가게 되어 그 위대함이 땅 끝까지 미칠 오래 기다려 온 통치자가 그곳에서 탄생하게 되었습니다(미가 5:2-4).

아우구스투스를 비롯한 세상 사람들이 전혀 예상하지 못했던 것은 그 누구보다 위대한 왕이신 예수님이 진정한 정의가 무엇인지를 보여주기 위해 어떻게 살고 어떻게 죽을 것인가 하는 사실이었습니다. 수 세기 전 미가 선지자의 시대에 하나님의 백성들은 또다시 속임수와 폭력과 “부정축재”의 문화에 젖어 있었습니다(6:10-12). 하나님이 끔찍이 사랑하셨던 민족이 하나님을 보지 못했습니다. 하나님은 그들이 서로 공의를 행하며 겸손하게 하나님과 함께 행하는 것의 참뜻을 세상에 보여주기를 간절히 원하셨습니다(8 절).

JUSTICE AND JESUS

Caesar Augustus (63 BC–AD 14), the first emperor of Rome, wanted to be known as a law-and-order ruler. Even though he built his empire on the back of slave labor, military conquest, and financial bribery, he restored a measure of legal due process and gave his citizens Iustitia, a goddess our justice system today refers to as Lady Justice. He also called for a census that brought Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem for the birth of a long-awaited ruler whose greatness would reach to the ends of the earth (MICAH 5:2–4).

What neither Augustus nor the rest of the world could have anticipated is how a far greater King would live and die to show what real justice looks like. Centuries earlier, in the prophet Micah’s day, the people of God had once again lapsed into a culture of lies, violence, and “ill-gotten treasures” (6:10–12). God’s dearly loved nation had lost sight of Him. He longed for them to show their world what it meant to do right by each other and walk humbly with Him (V. 8).

It took a Servant King to personify the kind of justice that hurting, forgotten, and helpless people long for. It took the fulfillment of Micah’s prophecy in Jesus to see right relationships established
between God and people, and person-to-person. This would come not in the outward enforcement of Caesar-like law-and-order, but in the freedom of the mercy, goodness, and spirit of our servant
