사마귀를 포함해 모든 것

“영국의 수호자”로 알려져 있는 올리버 크롬웰은 17 세기 당시 영국군 사령관이었습니다. 그 당시에는 중요한 지위에 있는 사람들의 초상화를 그리는 것이 일반적이었습니다. 그리고 화가들은 그 사람 얼굴의 덜 매력적인 부분은 보통 그리지 않았습니다. 그러나 실물보다 나아 보이게 하는 초상화를 원하지 않았던 크롬웰은 화가에게 이렇게 주의를 주었습니다. “사마귀를 포함해 모든 것을 있는 그대로 그려 주시오. 그렇지 않으면 돈을 지불하지 않겠소.”

분명히, 그 화가는 그 말을 따랐던 것 같습니다. 요즘이라면 소셜 미디어에 올리기 전에 당연히 걸러내거나 에어브러시로 수정해 버렸을 커다란 사마귀 두 개가 크롬웰의 초상화에는 그려져 있습니다.

“사마귀를 포함해 모든 것”이라는 표현은 사람들의 거슬리는 단점이나 태도, 문제를 있는 그대로 받아들여야 함을 의미하게 되었습니다. 우리는 어떤 경우에 그것이 너무 어렵다고 느낍니다. 그러나 실제 우리의 내면을 깊이 들여다볼 때 우리 자신의 성품에도 상당히 못난 부분이 있음을 발견하기도 합니다.

하나님께서 우리의 “사마귀”를 용서해 주셔서 감사합니다. 그리고 골로새서 3 장은 우리가 다른 사람들에게 은혜를 베풀어야 한다고 가르칩니다. 바울 사도는 우리에게 더 인내하고 친절하며 긍휼한 마음을 가지라고, 사랑하기 쉽지 않은 사람들에게까지 그렇게 하라고 권면합니다. 바울은 하나님이 우리를 용서하시기 때문에 우리도 용서하는 마음을 가져야 한다고 강조합니다(12-13 절). 사마귀를 포함해 모든 것을 있는 그대로 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님의 본보기를 통해 우리도 다른 사람들을 그렇게 사랑해야 함을 배웁니다.

WARTS AND ALL

Oliver Cromwell, known as the “Protector of England,” was a military commander in the seventeenth century. It was common practice during those days for people of importance to have their portraits painted. And it wasn’t unusual for an artist to avoid depicting the less attractive aspects of a person’s face. Cromwell, however, wanted nothing to do with a likeness that would flatter him. He cautioned the artist, “You must paint me just as I am—warts and all—or I won’t pay you.”

Apparently, the artist complied. The finished portrait of Cromwell displays a couple of prominent facial warts that in the present day would surely be filtered or airbrushed before being posted on social media.

The expression “warts and all” has come to mean that people should be accepted just as they are—with all their annoying faults, attitudes, and issues. In some cases, we feel that’s too difficult a task. Yet, when we take a hard inward look, we might find some pretty unattractive aspects of our own character.

We’re grateful that God forgives our “warts.” And in Colossians 3, we’re taught to extend grace to others. The apostle Paul encourages us to be more patient, kind, and compassionate—even to
those who aren’t easy to love. He urges us to have a forgiving spirit because of the way God forgives us (VV. 12–13). By His example, we’re taught to love others the way God loves us—warts and all.

사랑 노래

토요일 오후 강변의 조용한 공원입니다. 조깅하는 사람들이 지나가고, 낚싯대가 드리워지며, 갈매기들이 물고기와 과자 포장지를 놓고 싸우고 있는 곳에서 아내와 함께 앉아 어느 커플을 바라보고 있습니다. 그들은
40대 후반 정도로 되어 보이고 우리가 모르는 언어로 말하고 있습니다. 남자는 주위 시선을 의식하지 않고 자기 언어로 사랑 노래를 부르고 있고 여자는 그런 남자의 눈을 마주 바라보며 앉아있는데, 그 노랫소리가 산들바람을 타고 주변 모두에게 들려옵니다.

이 사랑스러운 행동을 보며 나는 스바냐서를 떠올렸습니다. 왜 그럴까 의아해할 분도 있을지 모르겠습니다. 스바냐 시대에 하나님의 백성들은 거짓 신들을 경배하며 타락했고(1:4-5), 이스라엘의 선지자와 제사장들은 거만하고 세속적이 되어버렸습니다(3:4). 스바냐는 그 책의 많은 부분에서 이스라엘뿐 아니라 이 땅의 모든 나라에 다가올 하나님의 심판에 대해 선포하고 있습니다 (8절).

하지만 스바냐는 다른 것도 예언하고 있습니다. 그 어두운 날로부터 하나님을 전심으로 사랑하는 사람들이 모습을 드러낼 것입니다(9-13절). 이 사람들에게 하나님은 마치 사랑하는 사람을 보고 기뻐하는 신랑과 같을 것입니다. “너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라”(17절).

창조주, 아버지, 용사, 재판장 등, 성경은 하나님을 여러 이름으로 부릅니다. 그러나 우리를 위해 직접 사랑의 노래를 불러주는 분으로 하나님을 떠올리는 사람이 우리 중에 얼마나 될까요?

LOVE SONG

It’s a quiet riverside park on a Saturday afternoon. Joggers pass by, fishing rods whirl, seagulls fight over fish and chip wrappers, and my wife and I sit watching the couple. They are maybe in their late forties and are speaking a language unknown to us. She sits gazing into his eyes while he, without a hint of self-consciousness, sings to her a love song in his own tongue, carried on the breeze for us all to hear.

This delightful act got me thinking about the book of Zephaniah. At first you might wonder why. In Zephaniah’s day, God’s people had become corrupt by bowing to false gods (1:4–5), and Israel’s
prophets and priests were now arrogant and profane (3:4). For much of the book, Zephaniah declares God’s coming judgment on not just Israel but all the nations of the earth (V. 8).

Yet Zephaniah foresees something else. Out of that dark day will emerge a people who wholeheartedly love God (VV. 9–13). To these people God will be like a bridegroom who delights in His beloved: “In his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing” (V. 17).

Creator, Father, Warrior, Judge. Scripture uses many titles for God. But how many of us see God as a Singer with a love song for us on His lips? - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

우유부단 극복하기

우리는 키친타월에서부터 생명보험에 이르기까지 다양한 선택을 해야 하는 세상에 살고 있습니다. 심리학자 베리 슈워츠는 2004 년에 쓴 ‘선택의 역설’이라는 책에서 선택의 자유는 우리의 행복에 중요하지만, 너무 많은 선택권은 과부하와 우유부단을 초래할 수 있다고 주장했습니다. 키친타월은 잘못 고르더라도 큰 손해를 입지 않지만, 삶의 방향에 영향을 주는 중요한 결정을 할 때 우유부단하게 되면 피를 말리게 됩니다. 그러면 어떻게 우유부단함에서 벗어나 예수님을 위한 삶으로 담대히 나아갈 수 있을까요?

그리스도를 믿는 신자로서, 우리가 어려운 결정을 할 때 하나님의 지혜를 구하면 도움이 됩니다. 우리가 크든 작든 인생에서 어떤 것을 결정할 때 성경은 “[우리의] 마음을 다하여 여호와를 신뢰하고 [우리의] 명철을 의지하지 말라” (잠언 3:5)고 가르칩니다. 우리 자신의 판단에 의존하면 우리는 혼란스러워지고 중요한 세부사항을 놓치거나 잘못된 선택을 할까 봐 염려하게 됩니다. 그러나 답을 얻기 위해 하나님을 바라보면 하나님은 “[우리에게] 바른 길을 보여주십니다”(6절, 현대인의 성경). 우리가 매일의 삶에서 결정을 내릴 때 하나님께서 명철과 평안을 주실 것입니다.

TACKLING INDECISION

We live in a world that offers a wide range of choices—from paper towels to life insurance. In 2004, psychologist Barry Schwartz wrote a book titled The Paradox of Choice in which he argued that while freedom of choice is important to our well-being, too many choices can lead to overload and indecision. While the stakes are certainly lower when deciding on which paper towel to buy, indecision can become debilitating when making major decisions that impact the course of our lives. So how can we overcome indecision and move forward confidently in living for Jesus?

As believers in Christ, seeking God’s wisdom helps us as we face difficult decisions. When we’re deciding on anything in life, large or small, the Scriptures instruct us to “trust in the Lord with all [our] heart and lean not on [our] own understanding” (PROVERBS 3:5). When we rely on our own judgment, we can become confused and worry about missing an important detail or making the wrong choice. When we look to God for the answers, however, He’ll “make [our] paths straight” (V. 6). He’ll give us clarity and peace as we make decisions in our day-to-day lives.

God doesn’t want us to be paralyzed or overwhelmed by the weight of our decisions. We can find peace in the wisdom and direction He provides when we bring our concerns to Him in prayer. - KIMYA LODER

계시와 확증

2019년에는 아기 성별을 공개하는 이벤트 중에 인상적인 것들이 있었습니다. 7월의 어떤 영상에는 “아들”임을 알리는 파란 연기를 내뿜는 차가 등장했고, 9월에는 텍사스에서 “딸”이라는 것을 알리기 위해 농약 살포용 비행기가 수백 갤런의 분홍색 물을 쏟아부었습니다. 그런가 하면 이 아이들이 자라날 세상에 관한 중요한 사실을 밝혀낸 또 다른 “공개” 도 있었습니다. 2019년 말에 온라인 성경 플랫폼인 ‘유버전’은 온라인 및 모바일 성경 앱에서 그해 가장 많이 공유되고 강조되고 즐겨 찾았던 성경구절이 빌립보서 4장 6절, “아무 것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라”였다고 발표했습니다.

이 구절은 대단한 계시입니다. 사람들은 자녀에게 필요한 것에서부터 가족이나 친구 간에 사이가 벌어지게 된 무수한 이유들, 자연재해, 전쟁에 이르기까지 이 시대의 많은 일들에 대해서 염려합니다. 그러나 다행인 것은 이런 모든 걱정을 하면서도 많은 사람들이 “아무것도 염려하지 말라”는 말씀에 매달린다는 것입니다. 더욱이 바로 그 사람들이 “모든 상황에서” 하나님께 간구하도록 다른 사람들과 자신들을 권면합니다. 삶의 불안을 외면하지 않고 직면하는 마음가짐은 하나의 “감사”입니다.

“올해의 성경구절”로 선정되지는 못했지만 바로 다음 구절은 “그리하면... 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라”(7절) 입니다. 이것이야말로 확신을 주는 구절이 아닐 수 없습니다!

REVELATION AND REASSURANCE

Baby-gender reveals in 2019 were dramatic. In July, a video showed a car emitting blue smoke to indicate, “It’s a boy!” In September, a crop-duster plane in Texas dumped hundreds of gallons of pink water to announce, “It’s a girl!” There was another “reveal,” though, that uncovered significant things about the world these children will grow up in. At the conclusion of 2019, YouVersion revealed that the most shared, highlighted, and bookmarked verse of the year on its online and mobile Bible app was Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

That’s quite the revelation. People are anxious about many things these days—from the needs of our sons and daughters, to the myriad ways family and friends are divided, to natural catastrophes and wars. But in the middle of all these worries, the good news is that many people cling to a verse that says, “Do not be anxious about anything.” Furthermore, those same people encourage others as well as themselves to present every request to God “in every situation.” The mindset that doesn’t ignore but faces life’s anxieties is one of “thanksgiving.”

The verse that didn’t make “verse of the year” but follows it is—“And the peace of God . . . will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (V. 7). That’s quite the reassurance! - JOHN BLASE

크고 작은 모든 창조물

미셸 그랜트는 팀버라고 하는 아기 비버를 야생으로 돌려보내기 위해 훈련시켰습니다. 수영시키려고 연못으로 데려가면 팀버는 미셸의 카약 보트로 돌아와 품에 파고들며 코를 비벼대곤 했습니다. 그러던 어느 날 아침, 팀버가 돌아오지 않았습니다. 미셸은 여섯 시간 동안 연못을 샅샅이 뒤지고 나서 찾기를 포기했습니다. 그리고 몇 주가 지난 후 비버의 두개골을 발견했습니다. 팀버의 것이라고 생각하고 미셸은 울기 시작했습니다.

미셸과 팀버를 생각하니 내 마음도 아팠습니다. 그래서 혼잣말로 이렇게 말했습니다. “정신 차려. 그 녀석은 그저 물에 사는 한 마리 커다란 설치류 동물일 뿐이야.” 그러나 분명한 사실은 내가 걱정했다는 것이며, 하나님도 그러신다는 것입니다. 하나님의 사랑은 저 높은 하늘로부터, 우리에게 잘 다스리라고 명하신 창조물의 일부분인 가장 작은 피조물에 이르기까지 닿아 있습니다(창세기 1:28). 하나님은 “사람과 짐승”(시편 36:6)을 모두 지켜 주시며, “들짐승과 우는 까마귀 새끼에게 먹을 것을 주십니다”(시편 147:9).

어느 날 미셸은 인근에 있는 다른 연못에서 카약을 타다가 팀버가 거기 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 팀버는 그동안 한 비버 가족을 만나 새끼 두 마리를 키우는 것을 돕고 있었던 것입니다. 팀버가 미셸의 카약 옆으로 떠오르자 미셸이 웃으며 말했습니다. “너 참 좋아 보이는구나. 아름다운 가족이 생겼네.” 비버는 대답처럼 구구 소리를 내고는 꼬리를 찰싹대더니 새로운 엄마에게로 헤엄쳐 갔습니다.

나는 해피 엔딩을 좋아합니다. 특히 나 자신과 관련된 일일 때 더 그렇습니다! 예수님은 하나님 아버지께서 새들을 먹이시는 것처럼 우리에게도 필요한 것들을 공급해 주실 거라고 약속하셨습니다(마태복음 6:25-26). 한 마리의 참새도 “아버지께서 허락하지 아니하시면 그 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라... 두려워하지 말라 너희는 많은 참새보다 귀하니라”(마태복음 10:29-31).

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL

Michelle Grant trained a baby beaver named Timber to return to the wild. When she took him for swims in a pond, he’d come back to her kayak to snuggle and rub noses. One morning Timber didn’t return. Michelle scoured the pond for six hours before giving up. Weeks later she found a beaver skull. Assuming it was Timber, she began to cry.

My soul ached for Michelle and Timber. I told myself, “Snap out of it. He’s just a large, aquatic rodent.” But the truth is, I cared—and so does God. His love reaches high to the heavens and down to
the smallest creature, part of the creation He calls us to steward well (GENESIS 1:28). He preserves “both people and animals” (PSALM 36:6), providing “food for the cattle and for the young ravens” (147:9).

One day Michelle was kayaking in a neighbor’s pond and—surprise—there was Timber! He’d found a beaver family and was helping them raise two kits. He surfaced beside Michelle’s kayak. She smiled, “You look well. You have a beautiful family.” He cooed, splashed his tail, and swam to his new mom.

I love happy endings, especially my own! Jesus promised that as His Father feeds the birds, so He will supply whatever we need (MATTHEW 6:25–26). Not one sparrow falls “to the ground outside
your Father’s care. . . . So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (10:29–31). - MIKE WITTMER

BEAUTIFUL FEET

John Nash was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994, recognizing his pioneering work in mathematics. His equations have since been used by businesses around the world in understanding the dynamics of competition and rivalry. A book and a full-length movie have documented his life and refer to him as having “a beautiful mind”—not because his brain had any particular aesthetic appeal, but because of what it did.

The Old Testament prophet Isaiah uses the word beautiful to describe feet—not because of any visible physical attribute but because he saw beauty in what they did. “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news” (ISAIAH 52:7). After seventy years of captivity in Babylon resulting from their unfaithfulness to God, messengers arrived with encouraging words that God’s people would soon be returning home because “the Lord has . . . redeemed Jerusalem” (V. 9).

The good news wasn’t attributed to the military might of the Israelites or any other human effort. Rather it was the work of God’s “holy arm” on their behalf (V. 10). The same is true today, as we have victory over our spiritual enemy through Christ’s sacrifice for us. In response, we become the messengers of good news, proclaiming peace, good tidings, and salvation to those around us. And we do so with beautiful feet. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

기꺼이 기다림

기다림은 우리 마음의 평화를 앗아가는 주범일 수도 있습니다. 컴퓨터 과학자인 라메쉬 시타라만은 웹브라우저 창이 느리게 뜨는 것을 기다리는 일 같은 사소한 것들이 인터넷 사용자들에게 “보편적인 욕구불만과 분노를 유발한다”고 말합니다. 그의 연구 결과에 의하면 사람들이 온라인 동영상이 열리는 것을 기다리는 평균 시간이 2초인데, 5초가 지나면 25 퍼센트 정도가 포기하고, 10초가 넘어가면 절반 정도의 사용자가 그만둔다고 합니다. 우리는 확실히 참을성이 없는 무리들입니다!

WILLING TO WAIT

Waiting can be a culprit in stealing our peace. According to computer scientist Ramesh Sitaraman, few things “inspire universal frustration and ire” in internet users as waiting for a sluggish web browser to load. His research says that we’re willing to wait an average of two seconds for an online video to load. After five seconds, the abandonment rate is about twenty-five percent, and after ten seconds, half of the users desert their efforts. We’re certainly an impatient bunch!

James encouraged believers in Jesus to not abandon Him while they were waiting for His second coming. Christ’s return would motivate them to stand firm in the face of suffering and to love and honor one another (JAMES 5:7–10). James used the example of the farmer to make his point. Like the farmer, who waited patiently for “autumn and spring rains” (V. 7) and for the land to yield its
valuable crop, James encouraged believers to be patient under oppression until Jesus returned. And when He returned, He would right every wrong and bring shalom, peace.

Sometimes, we’re tempted to forsake Jesus while we wait for Him. But as we wait, let’s “keep watch” (MATTHEW 24:42), remain faithful (25:14–30), and live out His character and ways (COLOSSIANS 3:12). Though we don’t know when Jesus will return, let’s wait patiently for Him, as long as it takes. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

기도의 말문이 막힐 때

어린 남동생이 수술을 받을 때 걱정이 되었습니다. 어머니는 동생이 선천적으로 “짧은 혀”(설유착증)를 가지고 태어나, 수술을 받지 않고는 먹는 것과 결국에는 말하는 것이 힘들어질 거라고 말했습니다. 오늘날에는 할 말을 잃거나 너무 수줍어 말을 못하는 것을 묘사할 때 짧은 혀를 가졌다(말문이 막혔다)고 말합니다.

때때로 우리는 기도할 때 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰라 말문이 막히기도 합니다. 입술로는 상투적인 표현과 반복적인 문구만 되풀이하고, 마음은 천국을 향해도 하나님이 과연 들으실까 의문을 품기도 합니다. 그리고 우리의 생각은 초점을 잃고 갈팡질팡합니다.

바울 사도는 1세기 때 로마 교회의 신자들에게 쓴 편지에서 우리가 어떻게 기도할지 몰라 힘들 때 성령님의 도움을 구하라고 권면합니다. “성령도 우리의 연약함을 도우시나니 우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직 성령이 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 친히 간구하시느니라”(로마서 8:26). 여기서 “도움”이라는 개념은 무거운 짐을 덜어준다는 것입니다. 그리고 “말할 수 없는 탄식”은 우리의 필요를 하나님께 가져가는 성령님의 중보를 가리킵니다.

기도 중에 말문이 막힐 때 성령님은 우리의 혼란과 고통, 산만함을 다듬어서 우리의 마음에서 하나님의 귀로 전달해주는 완벽한 기도로 만들어줍니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도를 들으시고 응답해 주시며, 우리가 성령님께 기도해달라고 요청할 때까지 필요한지조차 몰랐을 바로 그 위로를 가져다 주십니다.

TONGUE-TIED IN PRAYER

When my baby brother underwent surgery, I was concerned. My mother explained that “tongue-tie” (ankyloglossia) was a condition he was born with and that without help, his ability to eat and eventually to speak would be hindered. Today we use the term tongue-tied to describe being at a loss for words or too shy to speak.

Sometimes we can be tongue-tied in prayer, not knowing what to say. Our tongues tie up in spiritual clichés and repetitive phrases. We arrow our emotions heavenward, wondering if they will reach
God’s ears. Our thoughts zigzag along an unfocused path.

Writing to first-century Roman believers in Christ, the apostle Paul addressed what to do when we struggle to know how to pray, inviting us to find help from the Holy Spirit. “The Spirit helps us in
our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (ROMANS 8:26). The concept of “help” here is to carry a heavy load. And “wordless groans” indicates an interceding presence as the Spirit carries our needs to God.

When we’re tongue-tied in prayer, God’s Spirit helps shape our confusion, pain, and distraction into the perfect prayer that moves from our hearts to God’s ears. He listens and answers, bringing the exact kind of comfort we may not have known we needed until we asked Him to pray for us. - ELISA MORGAN

안전한 주의 손

마치 밧줄의 올이 풀리는 것처럼 덕 머키의 삶의 올 또한 하나씩 끊어졌습니다. 목사이자 조각가였던 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “어머니는 오랜 암 투병으로 돌아가셨고, 오랜 연인도 떠나갔습니다. 내 재정 형편은 바닥이 드러났고, 직업 또한 불투명해졌습니다... 내 주변과 내 내면의 정서적, 영적 어두움이 너무 심해서 기진맥진하여 좀처럼 헤어나오지 못할 것 같았습니다.” 이 여러 가지 사건들과 비좁은 다락방에서의 삶이 합쳐져서 ‘은신처’라는 그의 조각품이 탄생할 수 있는 여건이 되어주었습니다. 이 작품은 안전한 장소로서 못 자국이 있는 그리스도의 강인한 두 손이 컵 모양처럼 오므려져 있는 모습을 묘사하고 있습니다.

머키 목사는 이 작품의 디자인에 대해 이렇게 설명했습니다. “이 조각품은 그의 손 안에 숨으라는 그리스도의 초대입니다.” 시편 32편에서 다윗은 궁극적으로 안전한 장소, 곧 하나님 그분을 찾았다고 기록했습니다. 하나님은 우리의 죄를 용서하시고(1-5절), 혼란 가운데서도 그분께 기도하라고 권면하십니다(6절). 7절에서 시편 기자는 하나님을 향한 신뢰를 이렇게 선언합니다. “주는 나의 은신처이오니 환난에서 나를 보호하시고 구원의 노래로 나를 두르시리이다.”

어려운 일이 생길 때 어디로 향합니까? 이 세상에 존재케 해주는 연약한 끈이 풀리기 시작할 때 예수님의 용서의 사역으로 영원한 안전을 제공해주신 하나님께로 달려갈 수 있다는 사실이 얼마나 감사한지 모릅니다.

SAFE HANDS

Like the unraveling of a rope, the threads of Doug Merkey’s life were breaking one by one. “My mother had lost her prolonged battle with cancer; a long-term romantic relationship was failing; my finances were depleted; my vocation was foggy. . . . The emotional and spiritual darkness around me and within me was deep and debilitating and seemingly impenetrable,” the pastor and sculptor wrote. These collective events, combined with living in a cramped attic, became the setting from which his sculpture The Hiding Place emerged. It depicts Christ’s strong, nailed-scarred hands openly cupped together as a place of safety.

Doug explained the design of his artwork this way: The “sculpture is Christ’s invitation to hide in Him.” In Psalm 32, David wrote as one who had found the ultimate safe place—God Himself. He offers us forgiveness from our sin (VV. 1–5) and encourages us to offer prayer in the midst of tumult (V. 6). In verse 7, the psalmist declares his trust in God: “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”

When trouble shows up, where do you turn? How good it is to know that when the fragile cords of our earthly existence begin to unravel, we can run to the God who has provided eternal safety through the forgiving work of Jesus. - ARTHUR JACKSON

흔들리지 않는 믿음

케빈은 아버지가 돌아가신 후 유품을 가지러 요양 시설을 찾아갔었는데, 직원이 작은 상자 두 개를 건네 주었습니다. 그는 진정 소유가 많아야 행복한 것은 아니라는 사실을 그날 깨달았다고 말했습니다.

생전에 그의 아버지 래리는 근심이 없었고 항상 미소를 지으며 다른 사람들을 격려해주었습니다. 아버지가 그렇게 행복할 수 있었던 이유는 상자에 넣을 수 없는 다른 “소유물”, 곧 구주 예수님을 향한 흔들림 없는
믿음 때문이었습니다.

예수님은 우리에게 “보물을 하늘에 쌓아두라”(마태복음 6:20)고 권면하십니다. 그렇다고 우리가 집이나 차를 사거나 미래를 위해 저축하거나 많은 재산을 가져서는 안 된다고 하신 것은 아니었습니다. 예수님은 우리 마음의 중심을 살피라고 강조하신 것입니다. 아버지 래리는 어디에 초점을 맞추고 살았을까요? 그의 마음은 다른 사람을 사랑함으로써 하나님을 사랑하는데 맞춰져 있었습니다. 그는 자신이 지내고 있던 복도를 왔다 갔다 하면서 마주치는 사람들에게 인사를 나누고 격려했습니다. 누군가 울고 있으면 위로의 말을 건네거나 들어주었고 진심으로 기도해 주었습니다. 그의 마음은 하나님의 영광과 다른 사람들의 선을 위해 사는 데 집중되어 있었습니다.

하나님과 이웃들을 사랑하는 보다 중요한 일을 방해하고 혼란스럽게 하는 하잘것없는 것들로 우리가 과연 행복할 수 있을지 자문해 볼 필요가 있습니다. “[우리의] 보물 있는 그 곳에는 [우리의] 마음도 있느니라”(21절).
우리가 어떻게 사는가를 보면 우리가 무엇에 더 가치를 두는가가 나타납니다.

UNSHAKABLE FAITH

Kevin walked into the nursing facility after his dad passed away to pick up his belongings. The staff handed him two small boxes. He said he realized that day that it really didn’t take an abundance of possessions to be happy.

His dad, Larry, had been carefree and always ready with a smile and an encouraging word for others. The reason for his happiness was another “possession” that didn’t fit into a box: an unshakable faith in his Redeemer, Jesus.

Jesus urges us to “store up . . . treasures in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:20). He didn’t say we couldn’t own a home or buy a car or save for the future or have numerous possessions. But He urged us to examine the focus of our hearts. Where was Larry’s focus? His heart was set on loving God by loving others. He would wander up and down the halls where he lived, greeting and encouraging those he met. If someone was in tears, he was there with a comforting word or listening ear or heartfelt prayer. His mind was focused on living for God’s honor and the good of others.

We might want to ask ourselves if we could be happy with fewer things that clutter and distract us from the more important matters of loving God and others. “Where [our] treasure is, there [our] heart will be also” (V. 21). What we value is reflected in how we live. - ANNE CETAS
