“할 수 없다”라고 절대 말하지 말라

젠은 다리가 없이 태어나 병원에 버려졌습니다. 그럼에도 입양된 것은 축복이었다고 그녀는 말합니다. “내가 여기 이렇게 있는 것은 내게 쏟아져 온 사람들 덕분이에요.” 그녀를 입양한 가정은 그녀가 “어떤 이유가 있어서 그렇게 태어난 것”이라고 말해주었습니다. 그들은 “‘할 수 없다’라고 절대 말하지 않도록” 그녀를 양육하면서, 숙련된 곡예사와 공중 곡예사가 되는 것 등, 그녀가 추구하는 모든 일을 격려해 주었습니다. 그녀는 어려운 일들을 만나면 “어떻게 해결할 수 있을까?”라는 태도로 임하면서, 다른 사람들도 따라 하도록 동기부여를 해주고 있습니다.

성경에는 스스로 소명을 감당할 수 없거나 부적합하다고 느꼈지만 그럼에도 하나님이 사용하셨던 많은 사람들의 이야기가 있습니다. 모세가 전형적인 예입니다. 하나님이 모세를 불러 이스라엘 백성을 애굽에서 인도해 내라고 하셨을 때, 그는 망설이면서(출애굽기 3:11; 4:1) “나는 말이 느리고 혀가 둔한 자입니다”(현대인의 성경)라며 항의했습니다. 그러자 하나님은 말씀하셨습니다. “누가 사람의 입을 지었느냐 누가 말 못 하는 자나 못 듣는 자...가 되게 하였느냐 나 여호와가 아니냐 이제 가라 내가 네 입과 함께 있어서 할 말을 가르치리라”(4:10-12). 그러나 모세가 여전히 반대하자, 하나님은 그를 대신해 말하도록 아론을 세우시면서 하나님이 그들을 도와주시겠다고 확신시켜 주셨습니다(13-15절).

젠이나 모세처럼, 우리 모두는 이 세상에 존재하는 이유가 있습니다. 그리고 우리가 그 길을 가는 동안 하나님은 은혜로 우리를 도와주십니다. 하나님은 사람들을 보내어 우리를 돕게 하시고 하나님을 위해 사는데 필요한 것들을 공급해 주십니다.

NEVER SAY “CAN’T”

Jen was born without legs and abandoned at the hospital. Yet she says being put up for adoption was a blessing. “I am here because of the people who poured into me.” Her adoptive family helped her to see she was “born like this for a reason.” They raised her to “never say ‘can’t’ ” and encouraged her in all her pursuits—including becoming an accomplished acrobat and aerialist!She meets challenges with an attitude of “How can I tackle this?” and motivates others to do the same.

The Bible tells the stories of many people God used who seemed incapable or unsuited for their calling—but God used them anyway. Moses is a classic example. When God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, he balked (EXODUS 3:11; 4:1) and protested, “I am slow of speech and tongue.” God replied, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? . . . Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say” (4:10–12). When Moses still protested, God provided Aaron to speak for him and assured him He would help them (VV. 13–15).

Like Jen and like Moses, all of us are here for a reason—and God graciously helps us along the way. He supplies people to help us and provides what we need to live for Him.

해리엇 터브먼은 글을 읽을 수도, 쓸 수도 없었습니다. 그녀는 청소년 시절 잔인한 노예 주인의 손에 머리를 다쳤는데, 그 부상으로 발작과 의식을 잃는 일을 평생 겪었습니다. 하지만 하나님은 노예 생활에서 벗어난 그녀를 사용하여 300명이나 되는 사람들을 구해 내셨습니다.

그녀로 인해 자유를 찾은 사람들이 붙여준 “모세”라는 별명을 가진 해리엇은 남북전쟁 이전의 남부지역으로 용감하게 19번이나 건너가서 다른 사람들을 구했습니다. 그녀는 자신의 머리에 현상금이 붙어 있고 목숨이 계속 위태로울 때에도 멈추지 않았습니다. 헌신적으로 예수님을 믿었던 그녀는 갈 때마다 찬송가와 성경책을 지니고 다니면서 사람들에게 성경구절들을 읽게 했으며, 그것들을 외우려고 애썼고 또 자주 인용했습니다. “나는 어디서든 내가 하는 일을 놓고 항상 기도했습니다. 항상 주님께 말씀드렸습니다.”라고 그녀는 말했습니다. 그녀는 또한 작은 성공도 하나님께 영광을 돌렸습니다. 그녀의 삶은 바울 사도가 초기 기독교인들에게 한 가르침의 살아있는 본보기였습니다. “항상 기뻐하라 쉬지 말고 기도하라 범사에 감사하라 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희를 향하신 하나님의 뜻이니라”(데살로니가전서 5:16-18).

LEANING INTO GOD

Harriet Tubman couldn’t read or write. As an adolescent, she suffered a head injury at the hands of a cruel slave master. That injury caused her to have seizures and lapses of consciousness for the rest of her life. But once she escaped slavery, God used her to rescue as many as three hundred others.

Nicknamed “Moses” by those she freed, Harriet bravely made nineteen trips back to the pre-Civil War South to rescue others. She continued even when there was a price on her head and her life was in constant danger. A devoted believer in Jesus, she carried a hymnal and a Bible on every trip and had others read her verses, which she committed to memory and quoted often. “I prayed all the time,” she said, “about my work, everywhere; I was always talking to the Lord.” She also gave God credit for the smallest successes. Her life was a powerful expression of the apostle Paul’s instruction to the earliest Christians: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:16–18).

When we lean into God in the moment and live dependently in prayer, praising Him despite our difficulties, He gives us the strength to accomplish even the most challenging tasks. Our Savior is greater than anything we face, and He will lead us as we look to Him.

하나님께 집중하기

피루에뜨는 발레리나와 현대 무용수들이 하는 우아한 회전입니다. 나는 어렸을 때 현대 무용 수업에서 피루에뜨를 하는 것을 좋아하여 머리가 어지러워 바닥에 쓰러질 때까지 계속 빙빙 돌았습니다. 나이가 들어 균형과 제어를 유지하기 위해 배운 기술이 “스팟팅”이었습니다. 그것은 한 바퀴를 돌 때마다 눈을 맞추는 한 지점을 정해두는 것입니다. 내가 피루에뜨를 우아하게 마무리하는 데에는 그 초점 하나만 있으면 되었습니다.

우리는 모두 살면서 많은 우여곡절을 겪습니다. 그러나 우리의 문제에만 초점을 맞추면 맞닥뜨리는 것들이 감당할 수 없어 보이고 어지럽게 하고 처참히 쓰러지게 만듭니다. 성경은 우리가 한결같이 하나님께 우리 마음을 두거나 집중한다면, 하나님은 우리를 “평강하고 평강하도록”(이사야 26:3) 지키신다고 상기시켜 줍니다. 그런 완전한 평화는 삶에 아무리 많은 전환점이 있더라도 문제와 시련 가운데 하나님이 우리와 함께 하실 것을 확신하며 평온할 수 있는 것을 의미합니다. 하나님의 약속은 결코 변치 않기 때문에, 그분은 우리의 눈을 고정시킬 궁극적인 “점”, 곧 “영원한 반석”(4절)이 되십니다.

우리가 하나님께 나아가 기도하고 성경에 있는 하나님의 약속을 공부하면서 매일 하나님께 초점을 맞출 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그리고 우리의 영원한 반석이신 하나님을 의지하여 한 평생 우아하게 앞으로 나아갈 수 있기를 바랍니다.

SPOTTING GOD

A pirouette is a graceful spin that’s executed by ballerinas and contemporary dancers alike. As a child, I loved to do pirouettes in my modern dance class, whirling round and round until I was dizzy in the head and fell to the ground. As I got older, a trick I learned to help me maintain my balance and control was “spotting”—identifying a single point for my eyes to return to each time I made a full circle spin. Having a single focal point was all I needed to master my pirouette with a graceful finish.

We all face many twists and turns in life. When we focus on our problems, however, the things we encounter seem unmanageable, leaving us dizzy and heading toward a disastrous fall. The Bible reminds us that if we keep our minds steadfast, or focused, on God, He’ll keep us in “perfect peace” (ISAIAH 26:3). Perfect peace means that no matter how many turns life takes, we can remain calm, assured that God will be with us through our problems and trials. He’s the “Rock eternal” (V. 4)—the ultimate “spot” to fix our eyes on—because His promises never change.

May we keep our eyes on Him as we go through each day, going to Him in prayer and studying His promises in the Scriptures. May we rely on God, our eternal Rock, to help us move gracefully through all of life.

들어 올림

항공모함을 견학하는 중에 만난 전투기 조종사는 이렇게 짧은 활주로에서 이륙하려면 시속 56 킬로미터의 바람이 필요하다고 하였습니다. 이 같은 일정한 바람에 이르기 위해 항공모함의 함장은 배의 기수를 바람이 부는 방향으로 돌린다고 합니다. “바람이 전투기 뒤에서 불어야 하는 게 아닌가요?”라고 내가 질문하자, 조종사는 “아뇨, 전투기들은 바람을 향해서 날아야 합니다. 그래야만 양력을 얻을 수 있습니다.”라고 대답했습니다.

하나님은 여호수아에게 약속의 땅에서 그들을 기다리고 있는 “바람” 을 향해 그의 백성들을 인도하라고 하셨습니다. 여호수아에게는 두 가지가 필요했습니다. 내적으로는 “강하고 극히 담대함”(여호수아 1:7)이, 외적으로는 여러 가지 도전들이 필요했습니다. 여호수아는 매일 수많은 이스라엘 백성들을 인도하면서 벽으로 둘러싸인 성들을 마주하기도 하고(6:1-5), 사기가 꺾이는 패배를 당하기도 했으며(7:3-5), 아간의 도둑질 사건도 겪고(16-26절), 계속해서 전쟁을 치렀습니다(10-11장).

하나님의 지시로부터 그의 추력이 나오는 동안은, 여호수아의 얼굴에 부는 바람은 그의 삶을 받쳐줄 것입니다. 하나님은 그에게 “그 율법을 다 지켜 행하고... 우로나 좌로나 치우치지 말라... 주야로 그것을 묵상하여 그 안에 기록된 대로 다 지켜 행하라 그리하면 네 길이 평탄하게 될 것이며 네가 형통하리라”(1:7-8)고 말씀하셨습니다.

LIFT

During our tour of an aircraft carrier, a jet fighter pilot explained that planes need a 56-kilometer-per-hour wind to take off on such a short runway. To reach this steady breeze, the captain turns his ship into the wind. “Shouldn’t the wind come from the plane’s back?” I asked. The pilot answered, “No. The jets must fly into the wind. That’s the only way to achieve lift.”

God called Joshua to lead His people into the “winds” that awaited them in the promised land. Joshua required two things. Internally, he needed to “be strong and very courageous” (JOSHUA 1:7); and externally, he needed challenges. This included the daily task of leading thousands of Israelites, facing walled cities (6:1–5), demoralizing defeats (7:3–5), Achan’s theft (VV. 16–26), and continual battles (CHS. 10–11).

The wind that blew in Joshua’s face would lift his life as long as his thrust came from God’s instructions. God said he must “be careful to obey all the law . . . do not turn from it to the right or to the left . . . meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (1:7–8).

Are you resolved to follow God’s ways, no matter what? Then look for challenges. Fly boldly into the wind and see your spirit soar.

멘토링에 관한 기고문에서 한나 쉘은 이렇게 말합니다. 멘토들은 지원과 도전, 그리고 영감을 줘야 하지만, “그 무엇보다 우선되고 중요한 것은 사람을 있는 그대로 보는 것입니다. 상이나 명성의 관점보다는 단순히 ‘보여진다’는 측면에서, 인정받는다는 것은 인간의 기본적인 욕구입니다.” 사람은 인정받고, 알려지고, 신뢰받을 필요가 있습니다.

신약성경에서 “위로의 아들”이라는 뜻의 이름을 가진 바나바는 주변의 사람들을 “알아보는” 타고난 재능이 있었습니다. 사도행전 9장에서 다른 제자들이 사울을 두려워할 때도(26절) 바나바는 기꺼이 사울에게 기회를 주려 했습니다. 사울(바울이라고도 불림; 13:9)은 예전에 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 박해하였기에(8:3), 다른 제자들은 그가 진실로 제자가 되었다고 생각하지 않았습니다(9:26).

후에 바울과 바나바는 “[그들이] 주의 말씀을 전한 각 성으로 가서 형제들이 어떠한가 방문”(15:36)하는 일에 마가를 데리고 가는 문제로 의견 충돌이 있었습니다. 이전에 마가가 도중에 그들을 떠나버린 적이 있었기에 바울은 마가를 데리고 가는 것은 현명하지 않다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 흥미롭게도 바울은 나중에 마가의 도움을 요청합니다. “네가 올 때에 마가를 데리고 오라 그가 나의 일에 유익하니라”(디모데후서 4:11).

바나바는 시간을 가지고 바울과 마가를 “보았습니다.” 어쩌면 우리도 다른 누군가의 가능성을 알아봐야 할 바나바의 입장에 놓이거나, 반대로 영적인 멘토가 필요한 입장에 놓일 수 있습니다. 우리의 격려가 필요한 사람들에게나, 우리를 격려해줄 수 있는 사람들에게로 우리를 인도해 달라고 하나님께 간구합시다.

BEING SEEN

In an article on mentoring, Hannah Schell explains that mentors need to support, challenge, and inspire, but “first, and perhaps foremost, a good mentor sees you. . . . Recognition, not in terms of awards or publicity but in the sense of simply ‘being seen,’ is a basic human need.” People need to be recognized, known, and believed in.

In the New Testament, Barnabas, whose name means “Son of Encouragement,” had a knack for “seeing” people around him. In Acts 9, he was willing to give Saul a chance when the other disciples “were all afraid of him” (V. 26). Saul (also called Paul; 13:9) had a history of persecuting believers in Jesus (8:3), so they didn’t think “he really was a disciple” (9:26).

Later, Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement over whether to take Mark with them to “visit the believers in all the towns where [they’d] preached” (15:36). Paul didn’t think it was wise to bring Mark along because he’d deserted them earlier. Interestingly, Paul later asked for Mark’s assistance: “Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry” (2 TIMOTHY 4:11).

Barnabas took time to “see” both Paul and Mark. Perhaps we’re in Barnabas’ position to recognize potential in another person or we’re that individual in need of a spiritual mentor. May we ask God to lead us to those we can encourage and those who will encourage us.

현명한 조언

2019년 4월 파리 노트르담 대성당에 불이 났을 때 지붕의 오래된 목재 대들보와 납 판금으로 그 지붕이 용광로처럼 되어버려 감당할 수 없을 정도로 뜨거워졌습니다. 대성당의 첨탑이 영화같이 무너져버리자 이제 성당의 종탑으로 관심이 집중되었습니다. 만약 쇠로 된 거대한 종들의 목재 틀이 불에 탄다면 두 개의 탑이 모두 무너져 대성당이 폐허가 되기 때문이었습니다.

파리의 소방서장 갈레는 안전을 위해 소방대원들을 철수시키면서 다음에 무엇을 해야 할지 고민했습니다. 그때 레미라는 소방관이 초조하게 다가와서, “서장님, 탑 외벽에 소방호스를 설치하면 어떨까요?”라고 말했습니다. 건물이 무너지기 쉬운 상황이라 서장은 그 아이디어를 무시했지만 레미는 계속해서 그의 생각을 말했습니다. 갈레 서장은 그 부하 소방관의 조언을 따르던지 대성당이 무너지도록 내버려두던지 결정을 내려야 했습니다.

성경은 조언을 받아들이는 것에 대해 많이 말하고 있습니다. 젊은이가 어른을 공경하는 차원에서 말하는 것도 가끔 있지만(잠언 6:20-23), 대부분은 그렇지 않습니다. 잠언은 “지혜로운 자는 권고를 듣는다”(12:15), 전쟁의 승리는 지략의 많음에 있 (24:6), 미련한 자만이 지혜에 귀를 기울이지 않는다 (12:15)라고 말합니다. 지혜로운 사람들은 조언을 해주는 사람의 나이나 계급에
상관없이 좋은 조언을 받아들입니다.

갈레 소방서장은 레미의 말을 들었습니다. 불타던 종의 틀은 시간에 딱 맞게 진화되어 대성당을 구할 수 있었습니다. 오늘 어떤 문제에 경건한 조언이 필요하십니까? 때때로 하나님은 하급자의 입을 통해 겸손한 자를 인도해 주십니다.

WISE ADVICE

When the roof of Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral caught fire in April 2019, its ancient wood beams and lead sheeting created a furnace so hot it couldn’t be contained. After the cathedral’s spire dramatically fell, attention turned to its bell towers. If the giant steel bells’ wooden frames also burned, their collapse would bring both towers down, leaving the cathedral in ruins.

Pulling his firefighters back for safety, General Gallet, commander of the Paris fire department, pondered what to do next. A firefighter named Remi nervously approached. “Respectfully, General,” he said, “I propose that we run hoses up the exterior of the towers.” Given the building’s fragility the commander dismissed the idea, but Remi spoke on. Soon General Gallet faced a decision: follow the junior firefighter’s advice or leave the cathedral to fall.

Scripture has much to say about taking advice. While this is sometimes in the context of youth respecting elders (PROVERBS 6:20–23), most is not. Proverbs says, “the wise listen to advice” (12:15), wars are won with it (24:6), and only a fool fails to heed it (12:15). Wise people listen to good advice, whatever the age or rank of those giving it.

General Gallet listened to Remi. The burning bell frames were hosed down just in time, and the cathedral was saved. What problem do you need godly advice on today? Sometimes God guides the humble through a junior’s lips.

성령님은 성도들이 성경말씀을 이해하고 순종하도록 도와주십니다. 그분이 우리가 이기심 없이 베풀고 아낌없이 사랑하도록 힘을 더해 주시기에 우리는 하나 되어 함께 성장해 나갈 수 있습니다.

WE ARE ONE

In a small farming community, news travels fast. Several years after the bank sold the farm David’s family had owned for decades, he learned the property would be available for sale. After much sacrifice and saving, David arrived at the auction and joined a crowd of nearly two hundred local farmers. Would David’s meager bid be enough? He placed the first bid, taking deep breaths as the auctioneer called for higher bids. The crowd remained silent until they heard the slam of the gavel. The fellow farmers placed the needs of David and his family above their own financial advancement.

This story about the farmers’ sacrificial act of kindness demonstrates the way the apostle Paul urges followers of Christ to live. Paul warns us not to conform to the “pattern of this world” (ROMANS 12:2), by placing our selfish desires before the needs of others and scrambling for self-preservation. Instead, we can trust God to meet our needs as we serve others. As the Holy Spirit renews our minds, we can respond to situations with God-honoring love and motives. Placing others first can help us avoid thinking too highly of ourselves as God reminds us that we’re a part of something bigger—the church (VV. 3–4).

The Holy Spirit helps believers understand and obey the Scriptures. He empowers us to give selflessly and love generously, so we can thrive together as one.

사랑의 힘

독일과 덴마크 출신의 두 80대 노인은 보기 드문 커플이었습니다. 그들은 각각 60년의 화목한 결혼생활 후 홀로 되었습니다. 불과 15분 거리를 두고 살고 있었지만 그들의 집은 서로 다른 나라에 있었습니다. 그런데도 그들은 자주 함께 요리하고 함께 시간을 보내며 사랑에 빠졌습니다. 안타깝게도 2020년 코로나바이러스로 인해 덴마크 정부는 국경을 막았습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 두 사람은 매일 오후 3시에 조용한 시골길 국경에서 만나 각자의 나라에 앉아서 소풍을 함께 했습니다. 남자가 말했습니다. “우린 사랑 때문에 여기 있는 거예요.” 그들의 사랑은 국경보다도, 유행병보다도 더 강했습니다.

아가서는 아무도 막을 수 없는 사랑의 힘을 감동적으로 표현합니다. 솔로몬은 “사랑은 죽음 같이 강하다”고 주장했습니다(8:6). 죽음은 그 누구도 피할 수 없어서 깰 수 없는 쇠 같은 운명으로 찾아옵니다. 그러나 솔로몬은 사랑도 이에 못지않게 강하다고 하였습니다. 더욱이 사랑은 “불길 같이 일어나니 그 기세가 여호와의 불과 같습니다”(6절). 당신은 불이 커져서 화염으로 폭발하는 것을 본 적이 있습니까? 사랑도 불처럼 억제하기가 불가능합니다. “많은 물도 이 사랑을 끄지 못하겠고” 넘치는 홍수라도 사랑을 삼키지 못합니다(7절).

인간의 사랑도 이타적이고 진실할 때는 언제나 그와 같은 특징들을 나타냅니다. 그러나 하나님의 사랑에만 그런 능력과 무한한 깊이와 불굴의 힘이 있습니다. 그리고 여기 더 놀라운 것은 하나님께서 이 지칠 줄 모르는 사랑으로 우리 한사람 한사람을 사랑하신다는 것입니다.

THE POWER OF LOVE

Two octogenarians, one from Germany and the other from Denmark, were an unlikely couple. They had each enjoyed sixty years of marriage before being widowed. Though living only fifteen minutes apart, their homes were in separate countries. Still, they fell in love, regularly cooking meals and spending time together. Sadly, in 2020, due to the coronavirus, the Danish government closed the border crossing. Undeterred, every day at 3:00 p.m., the two met at the border on a quiet country lane
and, seated on their respective sides, shared a picnic. “We’re here because of love,” the man explained. Their love was stronger than borders, more powerful than a pandemic.

The Song of Songs offers an impressive display of love’s invincible power. “Love is as strong as death,” Solomon insisted (8:6). None of us escapes death; it arrives with a steely finality we can’t break. And yet love, the writer said, is every bit as strong. What’s more, love “burns like a blazing fire, like a mighty flame” (V. 6). Have you ever watched a fire exploding in feverish rage? Love—like fire—is impossible to contain. “Many waters cannot quench love.” Not even a raging river can sweep love away (V. 7).

Human love, whenever it’s selfless and true, offers reflections of these characteristics. However, only God’s love offers such potency, such limitless depths, such tenacious power. And here’s the stunner: God loves each of us with this unquenchable love.

잊지 않으시는 하나님

역사에 남을 선구적인 선교사들을 생각해볼 때 조지 리일(1750-1820) 이라는 이름은 금방 떠오르지 않습니다. 그러나 기억해야 할 분입니다. 노예로 태어난 리일은 조지아주에서 그리스도를 영접하고 미국 독립전쟁 이전에 자유를 얻었습니다. 그는 자메이카로 가서 농장의 노예들에게 예수님의 말씀을 전했고, 조지아주 사바나에서 두 아프리카계 미국 교회의 창립 목사로 섬겼습니다. 그중 한 교회는 “흑인 침례교의 모교회”로 여겨집니다.

사람들은 하나님 나라를 섬긴 리일의 놀라운 삶을 잊었을 지 몰라도, 하나님은 그의 영적인 섬김을 절대 잊지 않으실 것입니다. 우리가 하나님을 위해 하는 일도 마찬가지입니다. 히브리 사람들에게 쓴 편지는 다음과 같은 말로 우리를 격려합니다. “하나님은 불의하지 아니하사 너희 행위와 그의 이름을 위하여 나타낸 사랑으로 이미 성도를 섬긴 것과 이제도 섬기고 있는 것을 잊어버리지 아니하시느니라”(6:10). 하나님의 신실하심을 결코 가볍게 보아서는 안됩니다. 하나님은 그분의 이름으로 행해진 모든 것을 진실로 아시며 기억하시기 때문입니다. 그래서 히브리서는 이렇게 격려합니다. “믿음과 오래 참음으로 말미암아 약속들을 기업으로 받는 자들을 본받는 자 되라”(12절).

NOT FORGOTTEN

When we think of historic, trailblazing missionaries, the name of George Liele (1750–1820) doesn’t leap to mind. Perhaps it should. Born into slavery, Liele came to Christ in Georgia and gained his freedom prior to the American Revolutionary War. He took the message of Jesus to Jamaica, ministering to the slaves in the plantations there, and served as the founding pastor of two African American churches in Savannah, Georgia—one of which is considered the “mother church of Black Baptists.”

Liele’s remarkable life of kingdom service may have been forgotten by some, but his spiritual service will never be forgotten by God. Neither will the work you do for God. The letter to the Hebrews encourages us with these words, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them” (6:10). God’s faithfulness can never be underestimated, for He truly knows and remembers everything done in His name. And so Hebrews encourages us, “Imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” (V. 12).

If we serve behind the scenes in our church or community, it might be easy to feel our labor is unappreciated. Take heart. Whether or not our work is recognized or rewarded by the people around us, God is faithful. He’ll never forget us.

믿음으로 살아가기

걸을 때 균형을 잘 잡지 못하는 게리에게 의사는 균형을 잘 잡도록 물리치료를 받으라고 했습니다. 처음 물리치료를 받던 날 치료사가 말했습니다. “보이는 것에만 너무 의존하시네요. 심지어 잘못되었을 때도요! 몸의 다른 기관을 제대로 사용해 보세요. 발 바닥에 전해지는 감각이나 귀속에서 알려주는 평형감각 같은 것도 다 균형 잡는데 도움이 됩니다.”

“보이는 것에만 너무 의존하시네요”라는 말은 골리앗과 마주한 양치기 소년 다윗의 이야기를 떠올려 줍니다. 블레셋의 장수 골리앗은 40일이나 “이스라엘 군대 앞에서 거들먹거리며 걸으면서” 누군가를 보내 자기와 싸우자고 그들을 조롱했습니다(사무엘상 17:16). 그런데 이스라엘 사람들은 눈에 보는 것만으로도 두려움에 떨었습니다. 그럴 때 아버지의 심부름으로 형들에게 필요한 것들을 전해주러 온 어린 다윗이 나타났습니다(18절).

다윗은 그 상황을 어떻게 보았습니까? 그는 눈으로 보이는 것이 아닌 하나님을 믿는 믿음으로 보았습니다. 그는 그 거인을 보았지만, 하나님께서 그 백성들을 구해 주실 것을 믿었습니다. 비록 그는 어린 소년이었지만 사울 왕에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “누구든지 저 자 때문에 사기를 잃어서는 안됩니다... 제가 나가서 저 블레셋 사람과 싸우겠습니다!”(32절, 새번역). 그러고는 골리앗에게 말했습니다. “전쟁은 여호와께 속한 것인즉 그가 너희를 우리 손에 넘기시리라”(47절). 그리고 하나님은 바로 그렇게 하셨습니다.

LIVING BY FAITH

Gary was experiencing some balance issues while walking, so his doctor ordered physical therapy to improve his balance. During one session his therapist told him, “You’re trusting too much in what you can see, even when it’s wrong! You’re not depending enough on your other systems—what you feel under your feet and your inner-ear signals—which are also meant to
help keep you balanced.”

“You’re trusting too much in what you can see” brings to mind the story of David, a young shepherd, and his encounter with Goliath. For forty days, Goliath, a Philistine champion, “strutted in front of the Israelite army,” taunting them to send someone out to fight him (1 SAMUEL 17:16 NLT). But what the people focused on naturally caused them fear. Then young David showed up because his father asked him to take supplies to his older brothers (V. 18).

How did David look at the situation? By faith in God, not by sight. He saw the giant but trusted that God would rescue his people. Even though he was just a boy, he told King Saul, “Don’t worry about this Philistine . . . . I’ll go fight him!” (V. 32 NLT). Then he told Goliath, “The battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands” (V. 47). And that’s just what God did.

Trusting in God’s character and power can help us to live more closely by faith rather than by sight.
