아버지의 목소리

친구의 아버지가 얼마 전에 돌아가셨습니다. 아픈지 얼마 안 돼 증세가 빠르게 악화되어 며칠 만에 돌아가셨습니다. 친구와 아버지는 항상 가까웠지만, 둘 사이에는 여전히 물을 것도 많고, 들을 대답도 많고, 나눌 이야기도 많았습니다. 못다한 말이 그렇게 많은데 이제 아버지가 떠나가신 것입니다. 내 친구는 전문 상담가입니다. 그는 슬픔의 파도에 대해 잘 알고 있고, 그런 어려운 상황을 헤쳐 나가도록 사람들을 돕는 방법도 잘 알고 있습니다. 그런데도 그는 나에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “어떤 날은 그냥 아버지 목소리를 듣고 싶어. 날 사랑한다는 그 목소리를. 나에겐 언제나 아버지의 사랑이 전부였지.”

예수님이 지상 사역을 시작하실 때 중심이 되었던 사건은 요한에게서 세례를 받으신 일이었습니다. 요한은 세례를 주지 않으려 했지만, 예수님은 인간과 같이 되려면 그 일이 필요하다고 하셨습니다. “이제 허락하라 우리가 이와 같이 하여 모든 의를 이루는 것이 합당하니라”(마태복음 3:15). 요한은 예수님의 요청대로 했습니다. 그러자 세례 요한과 군중들에게 예수님이 누구신지 선포하는 일이 일어났으며, 그 일은 예수님의 마음도 깊이 감동시켰을 것입니다. 그것은 바로 내 아들이라고 확인해 주시는 하나님 아버지의 음성이었습니다. “이는 내가 사랑하는 아들이다”(17절).

우리 마음속에도 들리는 바로 그 음성은 믿는 자들에게 우리를 향한 하나님의 크신 사랑을 확인시켜 줍니다(요한1서 3:1).

THE VOICE OF THE FATHER

My friend’s father died recently. When he got sick, his condition deteriorated quickly, and in a matter of days he was gone. My friend and his dad always had a strong relationship, but there were still so many questions to be asked, answers to be sought, and conversations to be had. So many unsaid things, and now his father is gone. My friend is a trained counselor: he knows the ups and downs of grief and how to help others navigate those troubled waters. Still, he told me, “Some days I just need to hear Dad’s voice, that reassurance of his love. It always meant the world to me.”

A pivotal event at the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry was His baptism at the hands of John. Although John tried to resist,
Jesus insisted that moment was necessary so He might identify with humankind: “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness” (MATTHEW 3:15). John did as Jesus asked. And then something happened that proclaimed Jesus’ identity to John the Baptist and the crowd, and it must have also deeply touched Jesus’ heart. The Father’s voice reassured His Son: “This is my Son, whom I love” (V. 17).

That same voice in our hearts reassures believers of His great love for us (1 JOHN 3:1).

놀라우신 도움

2020년 가을, 보안관은 콜로라도주에서 이스트 트러블섬(골칫거리) 산불이 일어나자 하나님께 도움을 구하는 “수십만, 수백만의 기도” 가 하나님께 올려지는 것을 보고 놀랐습니다. 산불의 이름대로 불길은 10만 에이커(약 405제곱킬로미터)를 12시간 만에 모두 태웠습니다. 불은 바싹 마른 숲을 집어 삼키면서 300여 집을 태우고 산불의 진로에 있는 모든 도시들을 위협했습니다. 그때 한 기상학자의 표현대로 “하나님이 보내신” 것이 왔습니다. 그것은 비가 아니었습니다. 그것은 때마침 내린 눈이었습니다. 예년보다 일찍 내린 눈은 화재 지역 전체에 걸쳐 거의 1피트(30센티미터)가 넘게 내렸습니다. 습기를 머금은 눈이 산불의 진행을 늦추면서 불이 꺼진 지역들도 있었습니다.

이런 자비로운 도움은 너무나 놀라워 설명조차 하기 어렵습니다. 하나님께서 눈이나 비를 내려 달라는 우리의 기도를 들으신 걸까요? 성경에는 비를 내려 달라는 엘리야의 기도(역대상 18:41-46)를 포함하여 많은 하나님의 응답들이 기록되어 있습니다. 큰 믿음의 종이었던 엘리야는 날씨까지 주관하시는 하나님의 통치를 알고 있었습니다. 시편 147편에 보면 하나님께서 “땅을 위하여 비를 준비하신다”(8절)고 하셨고, “눈을 양털같이 내리시며... 누가 능히 그 추위를 감당하리요”(16-17절)라고 하였습니다.

엘리야는 구름이 보이기도 전에 “억수같이 쏟아지는 빗소리”를 들을 수 있었습니다(열왕기상 18:41). 우리에게도 하나님의 능력에 대해 그처럼 강한 믿음이 있는지요? 하나님은 우리에게 그분의 응답과 관계없이 그분을 신뢰하라고 하십니다. 우리는 놀라운 도움을 주시는 하나님을 바라보아야 합니다.

HIS AMAZING HELP

The sheriff marveled at the prayers, estimating “hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of prayers” were lifted to God for help as the East Troublesome Fire raged through the mountains of Colorado in the fall of 2020. Living up to its name, the blaze consumed 100,000 acres in twelve hours, roaring through tinder-dry forests, burning three hundred homes to the ground, and threatening entire towns in its path. Then came “the Godsend,” as one meteorologist called it. No, not rain. A timely snowfall. It fell across the fire zone, arriving early for that time of year—dropping up to a foot or more of wet snow—slowing the fire and, in some places, stopping it.

Such merciful help seemed too amazing to explain. Does God hear our prayers for snow? And rain too? The Bible records His
many answers, including after Elijah’s hope for rain (1 KINGS 18:41–46). A servant of great faith, Elijah understood God’s sovereignty, including over the weather. As Psalm 147 says of God, “He supplies the earth with rain” (V. 8). “He spreads the snow like wool . . . Who can withstand his icy blast?” (VV. 16–17).

Elijah could hear “the sound of a heavy rain” before clouds even formed (1 KINGS 18:41). Is our faith in His power that strong? God invites our trust, no matter His answer. We can look to Him for His amazing help.

죽음과 겸손

고대의 학자 제롬과 터툴리안은 고대 로마의 이야기를 인용하면서, 대승리를 거둔 장군은 빛나는 전차를 타고 수도의 중앙을 가로지르며 새벽부터 해질 때까지 시가 행진을 한다고 했습니다. 군중들은 환호하고 장군은 사람들의 칭송에 젖어 일생에서 가장 큰 영광을 마음껏 누립니다. 하지만 전설에 따르면 장군 뒤에 서 있는 하인이 온종일 장군의 귀에 대고 ‘메멘토 모리’(“언젠가 죽는다는 것을 기억하십시오”)라고 속삭입니다. 온갖 칭송 속에서도 장군은 자신도 언젠가는 죽을 운명이라는 것을 잊지 않고 겸손해지는 것이 꼭 필요했던 것입니다.

야고보는 욕심과 자만에 빠져 사는 공동체에 편지를 써서, 그들의 거만함에 맞서서 “하나님은 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 주신다”(야고보서 4:6)고 날카롭게 지적하였습니다. 그들에게 필요했던 것은 “주 앞에서 [자신을] 낮추는 것”(10절)이었습니다. 그런데 그들이 어떻게 겸손해질 수 있을까요? 그들도 로마 장군들처럼 자신도 언젠가 죽는다는 것을 기억할 필요가 있었습니다. 야고보는 “내일 일을 너희가 알지 못하는 도다” ”너희는 잠깐 보이다가 없어지는 안개”(14절)라고 했습니다. 자신의 약함을 인정할 때, 아무 소용없이 애쓰기 보다는 견고한 “주의 뜻” 아래에 사는 자유를 누리게 됩니다(15절).

우리의 삶이 길지 않다는 것을 잊어버리면 교만해질 수 있습니다. 하지만 언젠가 죽을 수밖에 없다는 사실에 겸손해진다면 매 순간의 호흡과 하루하루의 삶이 은혜임을 알게 될 것입니다. ‘메멘토 모리’(언젠가 죽는다는 것을 기억하십시오).

MORTALITY AND HUMILITY

Ancient scholars Jerome and Tertullian referenced stories of how in ancient Rome, after a general triumphed in an epic victory, he would be paraded atop a gleaming chariot down the capital’s central thoroughfares from dawn to sunset. The crowd would roar. The general would bask in the adoration, reveling in the greatest honor of his life. However, legend has it that a servant stood behind the general the entire day, whispering into his ear, Memento mori (“Remember you will die”). Amid all the adulation, the general desperately needed the humility that came with remembering that he was mortal.

James wrote to a community infected with prideful desires and an inflated sense of self-sufficiency. Confronting their arrogance, he spoke a piercing word: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble” (JAMES 4:6). What they needed was to “humble [themselves] before the Lord” (V. 10). And how would they embrace this humility? Like Roman generals, they needed to remember that they would die. “You do not even know what will happen tomorrow,” James insisted. “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (V. 14). And owning their frailty freed them to live under the solidity of the “Lord’s will” rather than their own fading efforts (V. 15).

When we forget that our days are numbered, it can lead to pride. But when we’re humbled by our mortality, we see every breath and every moment as grace. Memento mori.

성공과 희생

여름학기 중 아들은 스위스의 알프스산을 오르기 원했던 한 소년에 대한 이야기를 책으로 읽었습니다. 소년은 이 목표를 이루기 위해 그의 대부분의 시간을 훈련하는데 보냈습니다. 마침내 등정 길에 올랐으나 일이 계획대로 되지 않았습니다. 등반 중에 일행 하나가 탈이 나는 바람에 소년은 자기의 목표를 포기하고 그를 돕기 위해 뒤에 남았습니다.

수업 시간에 아들의 선생님이 이렇게 물었습니다. “주인공이 산에 오르지 못했으니 실패한 것일까?” 한 학생이 “네, 그는 천성적으로 실패할 아이였어요.”라고 말했습니다. 그러자 다른 학생이 그에 동의하지 않으면서, 소년이 다른 사람을 돕기 위해 자신의 중요한 것을 포기했으므로 실패하지 않았다고 했습니다.

우리가 우리의 계획을 제쳐 두고 다른 이들을 돕는 것은 예수님처럼 행동하는 것입니다. 예수님은 두루 다니시며 하나님의 진리를 전하기 위해 가정과 안정된 수입과 사회에서 인정받는 것을 희생하셨습니다. 주님은 우리를 죄에서 자유롭게 하고 하나님의 사랑을 보여주시기 위해 자신의 목숨을 포기하기까지 하셨습니다(요한1서 3:16).

SUCCESS AND SACRIFICE

During a summer study program, my son read a book about a boy who wanted to climb an Alpine mountain in Switzerland. Practicing for this goal occupied most of his time. When he finally set off for the summit, things didn’t go as planned. Partway up the slope, a teammate became sick and the boy decided to stay behind to help instead of achieving his goal.

In the classroom, my son’s teacher asked, “Was the main character a failure because he didn’t climb the mountain?” One student said, “Yes, because it was in his DNA to fail.” But another child disagreed. He reasoned that the boy was not a failure, because he gave up something important to help someone else.

When we set aside our plans and care for others instead, we’re acting like Jesus. Jesus sacrificed having a home, reliable income, and social acceptance to travel and share God’s truth. Ultimately, He gave up His life to free us from sin and show us
God’s love (1 JOHN 3:16).

Earthly success is much different from success in God’s eyes. He values the compassion that moves us to rescue disadvantaged and hurting people (V. 17). He approves of decisions that protect people. With God’s help, we can align our values with His and devote ourselves to loving Him and others, which is the most significant achievement there is.

원하는 것을 얻기

에런 버는 미국 하원으로부터의 박빙의 투표 결과를 초조하게 기다렸습니다. 토마스 제퍼슨과 치른 1800년 대선에서 승부를 가리지 못했던 에런 버는 하원이 그를 승자로 선언해 주리라 믿었습니다. 그러나 그는 패배했고, 원한이 그의 영혼을 갉아먹기 시작했습니다. 대통령 후보인 자신을 지지하지 않은 알렉산더 해밀턴에게 불만이 쌓인 에런 버는 4년이 채 지나지 않아 총으로 결투를 벌여 해밀턴을 죽였습니다. 이 살인에 격노하여 나라 전체가 그에게 등을 돌렸고, 에런 버는 노년에 쓸쓸히 죽음을 맞이했습니다.

우리 인간은 얼마나 남의 것을 탐하는지요! 아무리 권력이나 명예나 소유를 추구해도 결코 만족할 수 없어서 항상 무언가를 더 얻으려고 합니다. “자기를 낮추시고 십자가에 달려 죽기까지 순종하신”(빌립보서 2:8, 현대인의 성경) 예수님과 얼마나 다른 모습인지요!

역설적이게도, 자신의 야망을 이기적으로 쫓아 살면 마음 깊은 곳의 진정한 소망을 결코 이루지 못합니다. 결과를 하나님께 온전히 맡길 때에만 평화와 기쁨에 이르게 됩니다.

GETTING WHAT WE WANT

Aaron Burr anxiously awaited the result of the tie-breaking vote from the US House of Representatives. Deadlocked with Thomas Jefferson in the 1800 race for the presidency, Burr had reason to believe that the House would declare him the winner. However, he lost, and bitterness gnawed at his soul. Nurturing grievances against Alexander Hamilton for not supporting his candidacy, Burr killed Hamilton in a gun duel less than four years later. Outraged by the killing, his country turned its back on him, and Burr died a dour old man.

Political power plays are a tragic part of history. When King David was nearing death, his son Adonijah recruited David’s commander and a leading priest to make him king (1 KINGS 1:5–8). But David had chosen Solomon as king (V. 17). With the help of the prophet Nathan, the rebellion was put down (VV. 11–53). Despite his reprieve, Adonijah plotted a second time to steal the throne, and Solomon had him executed (2:13–25).

How human of us to want what’s not rightfully ours! No matter how hard we pursue power, prestige, or possessions, it’s never quite enough. We always want something more. How unlike Jesus, who “humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross”! (PHILIPPIANS 2:8).

Ironically, selfishly pursuing our own ambitions never brings us our truest, deepest longings. Leaving the outcome to God is the only path to peace and joy. - TIM GUSTAFSON

단 잠

내 친구 플로스는 밤에 잠을 이루지 못할 때 찬송가 “내 주되신 주를 참 사랑하고”의 가사를 생각합니다. 그녀는 이 찬송가를 자신의 “한밤중”의 노래라고 부릅니다. 왜냐하면 이 노래가 하나님의 약속들과 또 그녀가 하나님을 사랑하는 많은 이유들을 기억나게 해주기 때문입니다.

잠은 우리 삶의 필요한 부분이지만 가끔 쉽게 잠들지 못할 때가 있습니다. 때로는 성령님께서 우리가 고백하지 않은 죄를 일러주시는 음성을 듣기도 하고, 직장 일, 사람들과의 관계, 재정, 건강, 혹은 자녀들에 대한 걱정을 하기도 합니다. 그러다 보면 곧 전반적인 암울한 미래가 머릿속에 맴돌기 시작합니다. 좀 잔 것 같은데 시계를 보면 아주 조금 밖에 시간이 지나지 않은 것을 알게 됩니다.

잠언 3:19-24에서 솔로몬 왕은 우리가 하나님의 지혜와 명철, 지식에서 떠나지 않으면 편안한 잠을 잘 수 있다고 말합니다. 실제로 그는 “그것이 네 영혼의 생명이 되며... 네가 누울 때에 두려워하지 아니하겠고 네가 누운 즉 네 잠이 달리로다”(22, 24절)라고 하였습니다.

아마도 우리 모두는 뒤죽박죽 마구 흐트러진 생각들에서 하나님과 그분의 성품에 온전히 집중된 마음으로 옮겨갈 수 있도록 부드럽게 속삭이며 도와줄 “한밤중”의 노래나 기도, 혹은 성경 구절이 필요할 지도 모르겠습니다. 깨끗한 양심이 있고, 마음속에 하나님의 신실하심과 사랑에 대한 감사가 넘치면 단 잠을 잘 수 있습니다.

SWEET SLEEP

When my friend Floss lies awake at night, she thinks about the lyrics of the hymn “My Jesus I Love Thee.” She calls it her “middle-of-the-night” song because it helps her to remember God’s promises and the many reasons she loves Him.

Sleep is a necessary—but sometimes elusive—part of life. At times we may sense the voice of the Holy Spirit bringing unconfessed sin to our mind. Or we begin worrying about our job, our relationships, our finances, our health, or our children. Soon a full-scale dystopian future starts running on a loop in our brain. We assume we nodded off for a bit, but when we look at the clock, we realize it’s been only moments since we last checked.

In Proverbs 3:19–24, King Solomon suggested that we can receive sleep benefits when we embrace God’s wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. In fact, he claimed, “They will be life for you . . . . When you lie down, you will not be afraid [and] your sleep will be sweet” (VV. 22, 24).

Maybe we all need a “middle-of-the-night” song, prayer, or Bible verse to softly whisper to help us shift our jumbled-up thoughts to a mind fully focused on God and His character. A clear conscience and a heart full of gratitude for God’s faithfulness and love can bring us sleep that’s sweet. - CINDY HESS KASPER

오토바이를 타고 가던 댄은 갑자기 방향을 틀어 끼어드는 차를 피하려다 마주오는 차와 충돌했습니다. 2주 후 외상 치료 센터에서 깨어났을 때 그의 몸은 “만신창이”였습니다. 무엇보다 심각한 것은 척수 손상으로 몸이 마비된 것이었습니다. 댄은 회복을 위해 기도했지만 전혀 나아지지 않았습니다. 대신 그는 하나님이 친근하게 이렇게 가르쳐 주셨다고 믿습니다. “이 땅에서의 삶의 목적은 우리가 그리스도의 형상과 똑같아지는 것이다. 불행하게도, 그런 일은 매사가 잘 풀리고 별 문제가 없을 때에는 일어나지 않는다. 그것은... 삶이 고달플 때 일어난다. 하루를 버텨내기 위해 기도로 하나님을 의지해야만 할 때 일어난다.”

바울 사도는 하나님과 함께 올바로 섰을 때의 두 가지 유익, 곧 환난 중에 인내하고 즐거워하는 것에 대해 설명했습니다(로마서 5:3-4). 이 두 가지 유익은 극기적인 불굴의 의지로 환난을 이겨내라는 것이거나, 고통 중에 즐거운 오락거리를 찾으라는 것이 아니었습니다. 그것은 하나님을 흔들림 없이 신뢰하라는 권면이었습니다. 환난 중에 그리스도와 함께 할 때 그것은 “인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을” 일구어 냅니다(3-4절). 이것은 모두 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 버리시지 않고 불 가운데를 지나 영원에 이르도록 우리와 동행하신다는 믿음에서 나옵니다.

NOT FOR OUR COMFORT

Dan was riding his motorcycle when a car swerved into his lane and pushed him into oncoming traffic. When he woke up two weeks later in the trauma center, he was “a mess.” Worst of all, he suffered a spinal cord injury that left him a paraplegic. Dan prayed for healing, but it never came. Instead, he believes God has compassionately taught him that “the purpose of this life is that we become conformed to the image of Christ. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen when everything is unicorns and rainbows. It . . . happens when life is tough. When we’re forced to rely upon God through prayer just to make it through the day.”

The apostle Paul explained two benefits of right standing with God: persevering and rejoicing in suffering (ROMANS 5:3–4). These two benefits weren’t a call to endure suffering with stoic fortitude or to find pleasure in pain. It was an invitation to unshakable confidence in God. Suffering plus Christ cultivates “perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (VV. 3–4). This all flows from a faith that the Father won’t abandon us but will walk with us through the fire and into the future.

God meets us in our suffering and helps us grow in Him. Rather than viewing afflictions as His disfavor, may we look for ways He’s using them to sharpen and build our character as we experience His love “poured out into our hearts” (V. 5). - MARVIN WILLIAMS

창조의 경이로움

알래스카의 빙하 루트 글래시어를 하이킹하던 팀은 전에 보지 못했던 것을 우연히 보게 되었습니다. 엄청나게 많은 작은 이끼 덩어리는 빙하 전문 연구가인 팀에게도 전혀 낯선 것이었습니다. 그 밝은 녹색 덩어리의 이끼를 몇 년 동안 연구한 팀과 그의 동료들은 그 “빙하쥐”라 불리는 것이 나무에 끼는 이끼와는 달리 다른 것에 붙어 있지 않으며, 더욱 놀랍게도 짐승의 떼처럼 균일하게 움직인다는 것을 발견하였습니다. 처음에 팀과 동료들은 그것들이 바람에 불려 움직이거나 언덕 아래로 구르는 것으로 짐작했지만, 연구 결과 그런 가능성은 없었습니다.

그들은 아직도 이 이끼 덩어리들이 어떻게 이동하는지 정확히 밝혀내지 못했습니다. 이 같은 신비들은 하나님의 창조성을 잘 말해줍니다. 하나님은 창조하실 때 땅더러 식물과 나무의 형태로 “초목을 내라”고 지시하셨습니다 (창세기 1:11). 빙하쥐가 살 수 있는 환경의 빙하를 직접 가 보기 전에는 대부분 그것을 직접 볼 수가 없겠지만, 하나님의 창조 계획에는 빙하쥐도 들어 있었습니다.

1950년대에 빙하쥐가 발견된 이후, 그 보송보송한 초록의 존재는 지금껏 과학자들을 매혹해 왔습니다. 하나님은 자신이 창조하신 초목을 보시고는 “좋았더라”(12절)라고 하셨습니다. 우리 주변 어디에나 있는 하나님의 창조물인 식물들은 하나님의 창조 능력을 드러내며 하나님을 경배하게 합니다. 우리는 하나님이 만드신 각각의 나무와 초목들, 그 좋은 것들을 마음껏 즐길 수 있습니다!

THE WONDER OF CREATION

While Tim was hiking on Root Glacier in Alaska, he came across something he’d not seen before. Though Tim studies glaciers professionally, the vast number of small balls of moss were completely unfamiliar to him. After tracking the bright green balls for many years, Tim and his colleagues discovered that, unlike moss on trees, the “glacier mice” are unattached and—even more surprisingly—move in unison, like a herd or flock. At first, Tim and his colleagues suspected they were blown by the wind or were rolling downhill, but their research ruled out those guesses.

They haven’t yet discovered exactly how the moss balls move. Such mysteries highlight God’s creativity. In His work of creation, God appointed the land to “produce vegetation” in the form of plants and trees (GENESIS 1:11). His design included glacier mice too, though most of us won’t see them firsthand unless we visit a glacier that provides a suitable environment for them.

Glacier mice have been charming scientists with their fuzzy green presence since their discovery in the 1950s. When God observed the vegetation He’d created, He declared “that it was good” (V. 12). We’re surrounded by God’s botanical designs, each demonstrating His creative powers and inviting us to worship Him. 새 출발

중국인 가정은 어디서나 음력 설을 쇱니다. 이 명절은 날짜가 음력으로 결정되는데 보통 1월 말에서 2월 중순 사이에 있습니다. 이때 가족이 다시 모여 하는 전통들이 있는데 그중 몇 가지는 아주 중요한 의미가 있습니다. 새 옷을 사 입고, 집을 청소하고, 남은 빚을 갚는 일들은 과거를 뒤로 하고 새해를 깨끗한 모습으로 시작한다는 뜻이 담겨 있습니다.

이런 전통들은 또한 그리스도 안에서 누리는 새 삶을 생각나게 해줍니다. 우리가 전에 어떤 사람이었고 어떤 일을 하였건, 전부 뒤로 밀어 놓을 수 있습니다. 예수님이 십자가에서 돌아가심으로 우리가 완전히 용서받았다는 것을 알면 과거에 붙들려 스스로 책망하지도 않고 죄책감에서도 벗어날 수 있습니다. 그리고 성령님을 의지하여 예수님을 더 닮아가도록 날마다 변화될 수 있음을 알기에 우리는 새롭게 시작할 수 있습니다.

바로 그것이 바울이 신자들에게 “이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고린도후서 5:17)라고 말한 이유입니다. 우리도 이렇게 말할 수 있는 이유는 하나님께서 그리스도를 통해 우리를 하나님과 화목하게 하시고 더 이상 우리의 죄를 우리에게 묻지 아니하신다는(19절), 간단하지만 강력한 진리 때문입니다.

우리 주위 사람들은 우리가 과거에 저지른 잘못들을 잊지 않으려 할지 모르지만, 하나님의 관점에서 우리는 더 이상 정죄 받지 않는다는(로마서 8:1) 사실에서 우리는 용기를 얻을 수 있습니다. 바울이 지적했듯이, “하나님이 우리 편이시면, 누가 우리를 대적하겠습니까?”(31절, 새번역). 예수님을 통해 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 새 출발을 즐깁시다.

A FRESH START

The Chinese New Year, celebrated by Chinese families everywhere, is tied to the lunar calendar. Usually falling somewhere in late January to mid-February, this time for family reunions comes with many traditions—some of great significance. Buying and donning new clothes, giving our homes a good cleaning, and paying off outstanding debts remind us we’re putting the past behind and starting the year with a clean slate.

These traditions also remind me of our new life in Christ. No matter who we used to be or what we’ve done, we can put it all behind us. We can stop beating ourselves up over our past and let go of the guilt, knowing we’re completely forgiven because of Jesus’ death on the cross. And we can start afresh, knowing we can rely on the Holy Spirit to daily transform us to be more like Jesus.

That’s why Paul reminds believers “the old has gone, the new is here!” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17). We too can say this because of the simple but powerful truth: God has reconciled us to Himself through Christ and no longer counts our sins against us (V. 19).

Others around us may not be willing to forget our past wrongdoing, but we can take heart that in God’s eyes we’re no longer condemned (ROMANS 8:1). As Paul points out, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (V. 31). Let’s enjoy the fresh start God has given us through Jesus. - LESLIE KOH

겸손한 자세

“손을 계속 뒤로 빼고 있어요. 그러면 잘 될 거야.” 잰이 사람들 앞에서 연설을 할 때마다 그녀의 남편은 항상 이런 사랑의 조언을 해주었습니다. 사람들에게 억지로 감동을 주려 하거나 분위기를 주도하려는 자신을 발견할 때마다 잰은 그런 자세를 취하곤 했습니다. 그 자세는 그녀에게 배우려 하고 들으려는 마음가짐을 갖게 해주었기 때문입니다. 잰은 자기 앞에 있는 사람들을 사랑하고, 겸손하고 성령님께 순복해야 한다는 것을 자신에게 일깨우기 위해 이 자세를 취했습니다.

잰의 겸손에 대한 이해는 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 온 것이라는 다윗 왕의 깨달음에 근거를 두고 있습니다. 다윗은 “여호와는 나의 주시므로 주를
떠나서는 내가 아무것도 좋은 것을 가질 수 없다”(시편 16:2, 현대인의 성경)고 하나님께 고백했습니다. 그는 하나님을 신뢰하고 그분의 조언을 구하는 것을 배웠습니다. “밤마다 내 양심이 나를 교훈하도다”(7절). 그는 하나님이 곁에 계시므로 흔들리지 않을 거라는 것을 알았습니다(8절). 그를 사랑하는 전능하신 하나님을 믿었기 때문에 자기를 부풀릴 필요가 없었습니다.

우리가 좌절할 때 도움을 구하고 말문이 막힐 때 할 말을 알려주시기를 간구하며 매일 하나님을 바라보면 우리 삶 가운데 역사하시는 하나님을 보게 될 것입니다. 잰의 말처럼 우리는 “하나님과 동역”하는 것이며, 일이 잘 되었을 때 그것은 하나님께서 우리로 잘 되게 도와주셨기 때문이라는 것을 깨닫게 될 것입니다.

우리는 우리가 가진 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 온 것임을 기억하며, 겸손히 뒷짐 진 자세를 하고 사랑하는 마음으로 다른 사람들을 바라볼 수 있습니다.

A HUMBLE POSTURE

“Keep your hands behind your back. You’ll be fine.” That’s the loving admonition Jan’s husband always gave before she ventured off to speak to a group. When she found herself trying to impress people or seeking to control a situation, she’d adopt this posture because it put her in a teachable, listening frame of mind. She used it to remind herself to love those before her and to be humble and available to the Holy Spirit.

Jan’s understanding of humility is rooted in King David’s observation that everything comes from God. David said to God, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing” (PSALM 16:2). He learned to trust God and seek His counsel: “Even at night my heart instructs me” (V. 7). He knew that with God next to him, he’d not be shaken (V. 8). He didn’t need to puff himself up because he trusted in the mighty God who loved him.

As we look to God each day, asking Him to help us when we feel frustrated or to give us words to speak when we feel tonguetied, we’ll see Him at work in our lives. We’ll “partner with God,” as Jan says; and we’ll realize that if we’ve done well, it’s because God has helped us flourish.

We can look at others with love, our hands clasped behind our backs in a posture of humility to remind us that everything we have comes from God. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
