하나님으로부터 숨기

나는 눈을 감고 큰 소리로 숫자를 세기 시작했습니다. 3학년 같은 반 친구들은 숨을 곳을 찾아 교실을 뛰어나갔습니다. 한참 동안 사물함, 가방, 옷장 등을 샅샅이 뒤졌지만 친구들을 한 명도 찾을 수 없었습니다. 그때 한 친구가 천장에 매달린 예쁜 화분 뒤에 숨어있다가 튀어나오는 것을 보고 무척 당황했습니다. 숨바꼭질 내내 그 친구의 머리만 화분에 가려졌을 뿐 친구의 온몸은 내 시야 안에 있었기 때문입니다.

하나님은 모든 것을 아시기 때문에 아담과 하와가 에덴동산에서 “숨었을” 때에도 그들은 언제나 하나님의 “시야” 안에 있었습니다(창세기 3:8). 그러나 그들은 숨바꼭질 놀이를 하고 있었던 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 먹지 말라고 하신 나무의 열매를 먹고 갑자기 죄책감과 부끄러움을 느껴서 그렇게 한 것이었습니다.

아담과 하와는 하나님의 지시를 어기고 하나님과 그분의 사랑의 돌보심을 떠났습니다. 하지만 하나님은 분노로 그들을 저버리지 않으시고 “네가 어디 있느냐”라고 물으시며 그들을 찾으셨습니다(9절). 어디 있는지 몰라서 물으신 것이 아니라, 그들을 향한 하나님의 자비로운 마음을 그들이 알아주기를 바랐던 것입니다.

나는 숨바꼭질할 때 숨은 친구들을 찾지 못했지만, 하나님은 언제나 우리를 보고 아십니다. 우리는 늘 그분의 시야 안에 있습니다. 하나님이 아담과 하와를 찾으셨던 것처럼, 예수님도 “아직 죄인”이었던 우리를 찾으시고 십자가에서 돌아가심으로 우리를 향한 사랑을 보여주셨습니다(로마서 5:8). 우리는 더 이상 숨을 필요가 없습니다.

HIDING FROM GOD

I squeezed my eyes shut and started counting aloud. My fellow third-grade classmates tore out of the room to find a place to hide. After scouring every cabinet, trunk, and closet for what felt like hours, I still couldn’t find one of my friends. I felt ridiculous when she finally jumped out from behind a lacey, potted fern hanging from the ceiling. Only her head had been eclipsed by the plant—the rest of her body had been in plain sight the entire time!

Since God is all-knowing, when Adam and Eve “hid from [Him]” in the garden of Eden, they were always in “plain sight” (GENESIS 3:8). But they weren’t playing any childhood game; they were experiencing the sudden awareness—and shame—of their wrongdoing, having eaten from the tree God told them not to eat from.

Adam and Eve turned from God and His loving provision when they disobeyed His instructions. Instead of withdrawing from them in anger, however, He sought them out, asking, “Where are you?” It’s not that He didn’t know where they were, but He wanted them to know His compassionate concern for them (V. 9).

I couldn’t see my friend hiding, but God always sees us and knows us—to Him we’re always in plain sight. Just as He pursued Adam and Eve, Jesus sought us out while we were “still sinners”—dying on the cross to demonstrate His love for us (ROMANS 5:8). We no longer need to hide. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

살아있는 동안 기부하기

한 성공한 사업가는 인생 마지막 몇 십 년을 자신의 재산을 기부하는데 온 힘을 쏟으며 살았습니다. 억만장자였던 그는 북아일랜드의 평화를 되찾는 일이나 베트남 의료시스템의 현대화 등, 각종 뜻깊은 일을 위해 돈을 기부했습니다. 세상을 떠나기 얼마 전에는 뉴욕시 루즈벨트 섬을 정보기술 중심지로 탈바꿈하는 일에 3억 5천만 달러를 내놓았습니다. 그는 말했습니다. “저는 살아있는 동안 베풀어야 한다는 강한 신념을 갖고 있습니다. 베푸는 것을 미룰 이유가 없지요... 게다가 죽은 뒤에 남기는 것보다는 생전에 주는 것이 훨씬 더 즐겁습니다.” 우리가 살아 있는 동안 베푼다는 것, 얼마나 멋진 태도인지요!

요한복음에서 예수님의 제자들은 나면서부터 소경이었던 사람이 “누구의 죄” 때문인지 궁금해했습니다(9:2). 예수님은 그들의 질문에 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “이 사람이나 그 부모의 죄로 인한 것이 아니라 그에게서 하나님이 하시는 일을 나타내고자 하심이라 때가 아직 낮이매 나를 보내신 이의 일을 우리가 하여야 하리라”(3-4절). 우리가 하는 일은 예수님이 행하신 기적과 아주 다르겠지만, 어떤 방식으로 우리 자신을 드리든지 우리는 준비된 마음과 사랑으로 베풀어야 합니다. 우리가 베푸는 그것이 시간이든 자원이든, 아니면 행동이든, 우리의 목표는 하나님의 역사가 드러나도록 하는 것입니다.

하나님은 세상을 너무나 사랑하셔서 모든 것을 주셨습니다. 이제 우리도 살아있는 동안 기부합시다.

GIVE WHILE YOU LIVE

A successful businessman spent the last few decades of his life doing all he could to give away his fortune. A multibillionaire, he donated cash to a variety of causes such as bringing peace to Northern Ireland and modernizing Vietnam’s health care system; and not long before he died, he spent $350 million to turn New York City’s Roosevelt Island into a technology hub. The man said, “I believe strongly in giving while living. I see little reason to delay giving. . . . Besides, it’s a lot more fun to give while you live than to give while you’re dead.” Give while you live—what an amazing attitude to have.

In John’s account of the man born blind, Jesus’ disciples were trying to determine “who sinned” (9:2). Jesus briefly addressed their question by saying, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned . . . but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me” (VV. 3–4). Though our work is very different from Jesus’ miracles, no matter how we give of ourselves, we’re to do so with a ready and loving spirit. Whether through our time, resources, or actions, our goal is that the works of God might be displayed.

For God so loved the world that He gave. In turn, let’s give while we live. JOHN BLASE

배움의 기쁨

어떤 사람이 어떻게 언론인이 되었냐는 질문을 받고, 자신의 교육열의 바탕에는 어머니의 헌신이 있었다고 말했습니다. 어머니는 매일 지하철을 타고 다니면서 좌석에 남겨진 신문을 모아서 그에게 가져다주었습니다. 그는 주로 스포츠 관련 기사를 즐겨 읽었지만, 신문을 통해 세상의 각종 지식을 접할 수 있었고 점차 관심의 폭도 넓어져 갔습니다.

아이들은 선천적으로 호기심이 많고 배우는 것을 좋아하기 때문에 어릴 때 성경말씀을 접하게 해주는 것은 매우 가치 있는 일입니다. 아이들은 하나님의 비범한 약속들과 성경 속 영웅들의 신나는 이야기에 호기심을 갖게 됩니다. 그러다가 지식이 점차 깊어지면서 죄의 결과, 회개의 필요성, 그리고 하나님을 믿음으로 얻는 기쁨에 대해서도 이해하기 시작합니다. 예를 들면, 잠언 1장은 지혜가 주는 여러 가지 유익을 아주 잘 소개하고 있습니다(잠언 1:1-7). 성경 속의 귀중한 지혜는 우리의 실제 삶을 이해할 수 있게 빛을 밝혀 줍니다.

배움의 기쁨, 특히 영적인 진리를 배우는 기쁨을 키워 나가면 우리가 믿음 안에서 더 강건하게 자라갈 수 있습니다. 수십 년간 신앙생활을 해온 신자들도 삶 속에서 꾸준히 하나님을 아는 지식을 쌓아갈 수 있습니다. 잠언 1장 5절은 “지혜 있는 자는 듣고 학식이 더할 것”이라고 조언합니다. 우리가 기꺼이 마음을 열어 하나님의 인도하심과 가르치심을 받아들인다면 하나님은 끊임없이 우리를 가르쳐 주실 것입니다.

LOVE OF LEARNING

When asked how he became a journalist, a man shared the story of his mother’s dedication to his pursuit of education. While traveling on the subway each day, she collected newspapers left behind on seats and gave them to him. While he especially enjoyed reading about sports, the papers also introduced him to knowledge about the world, which ultimately opened his mind to a vast range of interests.

Children are wired with natural curiosity and a love for learning, so introducing them to the Scriptures at an early age is of great value. They become intrigued by God’s extraordinary promises and exciting stories of biblical heroes. As their knowledge deepens, they can begin to comprehend the consequences of sin, their need of repentance, and the joy found in trusting God. The first chapter of Proverbs, for instance, is a great introduction to the benefits of wisdom (PROVERBS 1:1–7). Nuggets of wisdom found here shine a light of understanding on real-life situations.

Developing a love of learning—especially about spiritual truths—helps us to grow stronger in our faith. And those who have walked in faith for decades can continue to pursue knowledge of God throughout their life. Proverbs 1:5 advises, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning.” God will never stop teaching us if we’re willing to open our heart and mind to His guidance and instruction. CINDY HESS KASPER

깨어 있으라!

독일의 한 은행 직원이 고객의 계좌에서 62.40유로를 이체하던 중 깜빡 졸았습니다. 그때 손가락이 “2” 키를 누르고 있었는데, 그로 인해 2억 2천 2백만 유로(3억 달러)가 고객의 계좌로 전송되었습니다. 이 실수로 계좌 이체를 승인한 동료 직원이 해고되었습니다. 다행히 그 실수가 발견되어 정정되었지만, 졸린 직원의 부주의한 실수로 은행은 끔찍한 일을 겪을 뻔했습니다.

예수님은 제자들에게 만일 깨어 있지 않으면 그들 역시 심각한 실수를 저지를 거라고 경고하셨습니다. 기도하시려 그들을 데리고 겟세마네로 가신 예수님은 기도하시면서 이 세상에서 한 번도 겪지 못했던 고뇌와 슬픔을 경험하셨습니다. 주님은 베드로와 야고보, 요한에게 그와 함께 “깨어 있어” 기도하라고 요청하셨지만(마태복음 26:38) 그들은 잠이 들었습니다(40-41절). 깨어 기도하지 못했던 그들은 예수님을 부인하려는 유혹이 실제로 찾아왔을 때 이겨내지 못했습니다. 그리스도께서 가장 큰 고난 중에 계실 때 그들은 영적으로 깨어 있지 못했습니다.

우리 모두 기도로 주님과 시간을 보내기로 더욱 헌신함으로써 영적으로 깨어 있으라는 예수님의 말씀에 유념할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그렇게 할 때 주님은 우리가 모든 유혹을 뿌리치고 예수님을 부인하는 심각한 실수를 저지르지 않도록 힘을 더해 주실 것입니다.

STAY AWAKE!

A German bank employee was in the middle of transferring 62.40 euros from a customer’s bank account when he accidentally took a power nap at his desk. He dozed off while his finger was on the “2” key, resulting in a 222 million euro (300 million dollars) transfer into the customer’s account. The fallout from the mistake included the firing of the employee’s colleague who verified the transfer. Although the mistake was caught and corrected, because he hadn’t been watchful, the sleepy employee’s lapse almost became a nightmare for the bank.

Jesus warned His disciples that if they didn’t remain alert, they too would make a costly mistake. He took them to a place called Gethsemane to spend some time in prayer. As He prayed, Jesus experienced a grief and sadness such as He’d never known in His earthly life. He asked Peter, James, and John to stay awake to pray and “keep watch” with Him (MATTHEW 26:38), but they fell asleep (VV. 40–41). Their failure to watch and pray would leave them defenseless when the real temptation of denying Him came calling. In the hour of Christ’s greatest need, the disciples lacked spiritual vigilance.

May we heed Jesus’ words to remain spiritually awake by being more devoted to spending time with Him in prayer. As we do, He’ll strengthen us to resist all kinds of temptations and avoid the costly mistake of denying Jesus. MARVIN WILLIAMS

가장 큰 사랑의 선물

아들 제프가 가게를 나서다가 보행 보조기가 길에 버려져 있는 것을 보았습니다. ‘저 뒤쪽에 도움이 필요한 사람이 있는 것은 아닐까?’ 생각하며 건물 뒤쪽을 살피다가 한 노숙자가 의식을 잃은 채 도로 위에 쓰러져 있는 것을 발견했습니다.

제프가 그를 깨워 괜찮은지 물으니 그가 이렇게 대답했습니다. “죽을 때까지 술을 마시고 있어. 폭풍 때문에 텐트가 망가졌고 난 이제 아무것도 없어. 살고 싶지 않아.”

제프는 기독교 재활 사역팀에 연락을 취하고, 도움을 기다리는 동안 바로 집으로 달려가 자신의 캠핑용 텐트를 가지고 왔습니다. 그리고 그 노숙자에게 “이름이 어떻게 되세요?”라고 묻자, 그 노숙자는 “제프리, G로 시작하지.”라고 대답했습니다. 제프는 자신의 이름이나 그 이름의 특이한 철자에 관해 말한 적이 없었습니다. 훗날 아들은 내게 이렇게 말했습니다. “아버지, 제가 바로 그 사람일 수도 있었어요.”

제프는 한때 약물 중독으로 힘들었던 적이 있었는데, 예전에 하나님으로부터 받은 은혜를 생각하며 그 노숙자를 도와줄 수 있었습니다. 이사야 선지자는 예수님을 통해 하나님의 자비가 우리에게 임할 것을 바라보며 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘 여호와께서는 우리 모두의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키셨도다”(이사야 53:6).

우리 구주 그리스도는 우리를 홀로, 절망 가운데 소망 없이 내버려 두지 않으셨습니다. 주님은 우리와 같은 사람으로 오셔서 사랑으로 우리를 건져주심으로, 우리가 자유롭게 되어 주님과의 새로운 삶을 살 수 있게 하셨습니다. 이보다 더 큰 선물은 없습니다.

LOVE’S GREATEST GIFT

My son Geoff was leaving a store when he saw an abandoned walking frame (a mobility aid) on the ground. I hope there isn’t a person back there who needs help, he thought. He glanced behind the building and found a homeless man unconscious on the pavement.

Geoff roused him and asked if he was okay. “I’m trying to drink myself to death,” he responded. “My tent broke in a storm, and I lost everything. I don’t want to live.”

Geoff called a Christian rehabilitation ministry, and while they waited for help, he ran home briefly and brought the man his own camping tent. “What’s your name?” Geoff asked. “Geoffrey,” the homeless man answered, “with a G.” Geoff hadn’t mentioned his own name or its uncommon spelling. “Dad,” he told me later, “that could have been me.”

Geoff once struggled with substance abuse himself, and he helped the man because of the kindness he’d received from God. Isaiah the prophet used these words to anticipate God’s mercy to us in Jesus: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (ISAIAH 53:6).

Christ, our Savior, didn’t leave us lost, alone, and hopeless in despair. He chose to identify with us and lift us in love, so that we may be set free to live anew in Him. There’s no greater gift. JAMES BANKS

폭풍에 맞서라

1968년 4월 3일 저녁 아주 거센 폭풍우가 테네시 주 멤피스 지역을 강타했습니다. 마틴 루터 킹 목사는 지치고 몸이 좋지 않아 교회 강당에서 열릴 예정이었던 환경미화원 파업 지지 연설을 취소하려고 했습니다. 그런데 많은 회중이 궂은 날씨에도 개의치 않고 연설을 듣기 위해 모여 있다는 다급한 전화를 받고 그는 아주 놀랐습니다. 그래서 그는 교회 강당에 가서 40분 동안 연설했는데, 그 연설이 바로 그의 최고의 연설 중 하나로 꼽히는 “나는 산 정상에 서 보았습니다”였습니다.

킹 목사는 그 다음날 암살자의 총탄에 맞아 세상을 떠났지만, 그날 밤 그의 연설은 지금까지도 억눌린 자들에게 “약속의 땅”에 대한 소망을 심어주고 있습니다. 마찬가지로, 초창기 예수님을 따르던 사람들을 감동시킨 잊을 수 없는 한 메시지가 있었습니다. 히브리서는 그리스도를 믿는 믿음 때문에 생명의 위협을 받고 있던 유대인 신자들에게 용기를 주기 위해 쓰인 것인데, 그들에게 소망을 잃어버리지 말라고 확고한 영적인 메시지로 격려하고 있습니다. 그것은 “피곤한 손과 연약한 무릎을 일으켜 세우라”(12:12)는 권면이었습니다. 유대인인 그들은 그것이 본래 이사야 선지자가 했던 호소였다는 것을 알 수 있었을 것입니다(이사야 35:3).

그러나 지금 예수님의 제자인 우리는 “인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하며 믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보라”(히브리서 12:1-2)는 요구를 받고 있습니다. 우리가 이 요구를 받아들일 때 우리는 “피곤하여 낙심하지 않게”(3절) 될 것입니다.

우리 삶에서 돌풍과 폭풍우를 피할 수는 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 예수님 안에 서 있으면 삶의 거센 폭풍도 견뎌낼 수 있습니다.

BRAVE YOUR STORM

It was the evening of April 3, 1968, and a fierce thunderstorm was lashing through Memphis, Tennessee. Weary and feeling ill, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. hadn’t intended to give his planned speech in support of the striking sanitation workers at a church hall. But he was surprised by an urgent phone call saying a large crowd had braved the weather to hear him. So he went to the hall and spoke for forty minutes, delivering what some say was his greatest speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.”

The next day, King was killed by an assassin’s bullet, but his speech still inspires oppressed people with the hope of “the promised land.” Likewise, early followers of Jesus were uplifted by a stirring message. The book of Hebrews, written to encourage Jewish believers facing threats for their faith in Christ, offers firm spiritual encouragement to not lose hope. As it urges, “strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees” (12:12). As Jews, they would recognize that appeal as originally coming from the prophet Isaiah (ISAIAH 35:3).

But now, as Christ’s disciples, we’re called to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (HEBREWS 12:1–2). When we do so, we “will not grow weary and lose heart” (V. 3).

Certainly, squalls and storms await us in this life. But in Jesus, we outlast life’s tempests by standing in Him. PATRICIA RAYBON

나는 법정에 앉아 있으면서 깨어진 이 세상의 모습 몇 가지를 목격할 수 있었습니다. 엄마에게 버림받은 딸, 한때 지녔던 사랑은 사라지고 서로에게 쓰라림만 남은 부부, 아내와 화해하고 자녀들과 재결합하기를 원하는 남편. 이들에게는 변화된 마음과 상처의 치유, 그리고 어려움을 이겨낼 수 있는 하나님의 사랑이 절실히 필요했습니다.

때로 이 세상에 어두움과 절망밖에 없다고 느껴질 때 우리는 쉽게 좌절합니다. 하지만 그럴 때 그리스도를 믿는 신자들 안에 거하시는 성령께서(요한복음 14:17) 예수님이 바로 그 상처와 고통 때문에 돌아가셨다는 것을 우리에게 일깨워줍니다. 주님은 인간의 모습으로 이 세상에 오시면서 어두움 속에 빛을 가져오셨습니다(1:4-5; 8:12). 우리는 어둠을 틈타 예수님을 몰래 찾아와서 주님과 대화를 나눈 후 빛이신 주님에 의해 변화된 니고데모의 모습을 통해서도 이 사실을 알 수 있습니다(3:1-2; 19:38-40).

예수님은 니고데모에게 “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라”(3:16)고 가르쳐 주셨습니다.

하지만 예수님이 이 세상에 빛과 사랑을 가져오셨음에도 아직 많은 사람들이 자신의 죄로 인한 어두움 속에서 방황하고 있습니다(19-20절). 그러나 우리가 예수님을 믿고 따른다면 우리에게는 어두움을 몰아낼 수 있는 빛이 있습니다. 그 사실에 감사하며, 우리를 주님의 사랑을 나타내는 빛으로 삼아 달라고 하나님께 간구합시다(마태복음 5:14-16).

DARKNESS AND LIGHT

As I sat in the courtroom, I witnessed several examples of the brokenness of our world: a daughter estranged from her mother; a husband and wife who’d lost the love they once had and now shared only bitterness; a husband who yearned to be reconciled with his wife and to be reunited with his children. They desperately needed changed hearts, healed wounds, and for God’s love to prevail.

Sometimes when the world around us seems to hold only darkness and despair, it’s easy to give in to despair. But then the Spirit, who lives inside believers in Christ (JOHN 14:17), reminds us that Jesus died for that brokenness and pain. When He came into the world as a human, He brought light into the darkness (1:4–5; 8:12). We see this in His conversation with Nicodemus, who furtively came to Jesus in the cover of darkness but left impacted by the Light (3:1–2; 19:38–40).

Jesus taught Nicodemus that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (3:16).

Yet even though Jesus brought light and love into the world, many remain lost in the darkness of their sin (VV. 19–20). If we’re His followers, we have the light that dispels darkness. In gratitude, let’s pray that God will make us beacons of His love (MATTHEW 5:14–16). ALYSON KIEDA

카알은 암과 투병하던 중 양쪽 폐 이식 수술이 필요하게 되었습니다. 그는 하나님께 새로운 폐를 달라고 기도하다가, 그 기도가 이상하다는 느낌이 들었습니다. 그는 “내가 살기 위해서 누군가 죽어야 했기” 때문에, 자기가 그렇게 기도하는 것이 이상했다고 고백했습니다.

카알이 겪었던 딜레마는 하나님은 죽음으로 생명이 있게 하신다는, 성경의 기본 진리를 잘 표현하고 있습니다. 이것은 출애굽 이야기에 잘 나타나 있습니다. 노예로 태어난 이스라엘 백성들은 애굽 사람들의 강압적인 통제 아래 피폐해져 가고 있었습니다. 애굽 왕 바로는 하나님이 직접 치시기까지 자기의 굳건한 통치를 놓으려 하지 않았습니다. 그러다가 흠 없는 양을 죽여 그 피로 문의 좌우 설주와 인방에 바르지 않은 모든 집의 장자가 죽는 사건이 발생했습니다(출애굽기 12:6-7, 12-13).

오늘날 우리도 죄의 노예로 태어났습니다. 사탄은 우리를 거머쥔 손아귀를 쉽게 놓지 않으려 했지만, 하나님께서 친히 그의 완전하신 아들로 하여금 십자가에서 희생의 피를 흘리게 하심으로써 이 문제를 해결해 주셨습니다.

예수님은 우리도 그의 십자가에서 같이 못박힐 것을 요구하십니다. 바울은 말했습니다. “내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라”(갈라디아서 2:20). 우리가 하나님의 흠 없는 어린 양이신 주님을 믿으면, 우리는 매일 주님과 함께 죽음으로 우리의 죄에 대해 죽어서, 주님과 함께 새 생명으로 부활하게 됩니다(로마서 6:4-5). 우리가 죄로 말미암는 족쇄를 거부하고 예수님이 주시는 자유를 받아들일 때마다 우리는 이 믿음을 표현하는 것입니다. 우리가 예수님과 함께 죽을 때보다 더 활기찬 생명을 누릴 때는 없습니다.

LIFE BY DEATH

Carl was battling cancer and needed a double lung transplant. He asked God for new lungs but felt odd doing so. He confessed it’s a strange thing to pray, because “someone has to die so I might live.”

Carl’s dilemma highlights a basic truth of Scripture: God uses death to bring life. We see this in the story of the exodus. Born into slavery, the Israelites languished under the oppressive hands of the Egyptians. Pharaoh wouldn’t release his grip until God made it personal. Every eldest son would die unless the family killed a spotless lamb and slathered its blood across their doorposts (EXODUS 12:6–7).

Today, you and I have been born into the bondage of sin. Satan wouldn’t release his grip on us until God made it personal, sacrificing His perfect Son on the blood-spattered arms of the cross.

Jesus calls us to join Him there. Paul explained, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (GALATIANS 2:20). When we put our faith in God’s spotless Lamb, we commit to daily dying with Him—dying to our sin so we might rise with Him to new life (ROMANS 6:4–5). We express this faith every time we say no to the shackles of sin and yes to the freedom of Christ. We’re never more alive than when we die with Jesus. MIKE WITTMER

설교하는 것을 실천하라

나는 막내 재비어가 유치원에 입학했을 때부터 아들들에게 성경을 읽어 주기 시작했습니다. 성경을 가르칠 수 있는 대목을 찾아 우리의 상황에 적용될 구절을 함께 읽고, 아이들에게 나와 함께 기도하자고 격려하곤 했습니다. 재비어는 자연스럽게 성경을 외웠습니다. 우리가 마땅한 생각이 나지 않아 곤경에 처할 때, 아이는 하나님의 진리를 밝혀주는 구절들을 불쑥 내뱉곤 했습니다.

어느 날 내가 화가 나서 그 아이를 야단쳤더니 아들은 나를 껴안고 이렇게 말했습니다. “엄마, 설교하신 대로 해보세요.”

재비어가 이렇게 부드럽게 깨우쳐준 것은 야고보가 여러 나라에 흩어져 있는 예수를 믿는 유대인 신자들에게(야고보서 1:1) 현명한 조언을 해주었던 것과 아주 유사합니다. 야고보는 죄가 우리가 그리스도를 증거하는 것을 방해할 수 있는 다양한 방법을 강조하면서 그들에게 “말씀을 온유함으로 받으라”(21절)고 격려했습니다. 성경을 듣고도 순종하지 않으면 우리는 거울을 보고도 그 모습을 잊어버리는 사람들과 같습니다(23-24절). 그리고 그리스도의 피를 통해 하나님 마음에 합한 형상을 지닌 자로서 우리가 받은 특권을 보지 못하기도 합니다.

예수님을 믿는 신자들은 복음을 전하라는 명령을 받았습니다. 성령님은 우리를 변화시켜 우리가 더 나은 대리인이 되어 좋은 소식을 전하는 사람이 될 수 있도록 능력을 주십니다. 우리가 사랑으로 순종함으로써 하나님이 우리를 보내시는 곳마다 하나님의 진리와 사랑의 빛을 반영할 수 있게 되고, 우리가 전파하는 것을 실천함으로써 다른 사람들을 예수님께로 인도할 수 있습니다.

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH

I started reading the Bible to my sons when my youngest, Xavier, entered kindergarten. I would look for teachable moments and share verses that would apply to our circumstances and encourage them to pray with me. Xavier memorized Scripture without even trying. If we were in a predicament in which we needed wisdom, he’d blurt out verses that shined a light on God’s truth.

One day, I got angry and spoke harshly within his earshot. My son hugged me and said, “Practice what you preach, Mama.”Xavier’s gentle reminder echoes the wise counsel of the apostle

James as he addressed Jewish believers in Jesus scattered in various countries (JAMES 1:1). Highlighting the various ways sin can interfere with our witness for Christ, James encouraged them to “humbly accept the word planted in them” (V. 21). By hearing but not obeying Scripture, we’re like people who look in the mirror and forget what we look like (VV. 23–24). We can lose sight of the privilege we’ve been given as image-bearers made right with God through the blood of Christ.

Believers in Jesus are commanded to share the gospel. The Holy Spirit changes us while empowering us to become better representatives and therefore messengers of the good news. As our loving obedience helps us reflect the light of God’s truth and love wherever He sends us, we can point others to Jesus by practicing what we preach. XOCHITL DIXON

터무니없는 투자

1929년 미국 경제가 붕괴되면서 수백만 명의 사람들이 모든 것을 잃었습니다. 그러나 플로이드 오들럼은 아니었습니다. 모든 사람들이 극심한 공포에 빠져 주식을 헐값에 팔아 치울 때 오들럼은 국가의 미래가 무너진 것 같은데도 무모해 보일 정도로 주식에 뛰어 들어 주식을 매입했습니다. 그러나 오들럼의 “어리석은” 판단은 성과를 거두었고, 수십 년 동안 버틸 수 있는 든든한 투자를 일구어 냈습니다.

하나님은 예레미야에게 “베냐민 땅 아나돗에 있는 [그] 밭을 사라”(예레미야 32:8)고 하시면서 완전히 터무니없는 투자처럼 보이는 것을 하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 그 때는 나라 전체가 약탈당할 위기에 처해 있었기 때문에 밭을 살 때가 아니었습니다. “예루살렘은 바빌로니아 왕의 군대에게 포위되어 있었고”(2절, 새번역), 예레미야가 구입한 밭도 곧 바벨론의 땅이 될 것이었습니다. 곧 모든 것을 잃을 상황에서 어떤 바보가 투자를 하겠습니까?

글쎄요, 그 누구도 상상할 수 없는 미래를 계획하신 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 사람이라면 모르겠지요. “만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 사람이 이 땅에서 집과 밭과 포도원을 다시 사게 되리라”(15절). 하나님은 멸망 그 이상의 것을 보시며 구원과 치유, 그리고 회복을 약속해 주셨습니다. 하나님과 관련된 일이나 하나님을 위한 봉사에 터무니없이 투자하는 것은 어리석은 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 하나님께서 그렇게 하라고 우리를 인도하실 때 우리가 할 수 있는 가장 지혜로운 행동입니다. (그리고 그 말씀 뒤에 하나님이 계시다는 사실을 알기 위해 늘 기도하며 애써야 합니다.) 하나님의 이끄심을 따라 다른 사람들에게 “어리석은” 투자를 하는 것은 이 세상에서 가장 타당한 일입니다.

A LUDICROUS INVESTMENT

In 1929, as the US economy crashed, millions of people lost everything. But not Floyd Odlum. As everyone else panicked and sold their stocks at cut-rate prices, Odlum appeared to foolishly jump in and purchase stocks just as the nation’s future disintegrated. But Odlum’s “foolish” perspective paid off, yielding robust investments that endured for decades.

God told Jeremiah to make what seemed like an absolutely ludicrous investment: “Buy [the] field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin” (JEREMIAH 32:8). This was no time to be buying fields, however. The entire country was on the verge of being ransacked. “The army of the king of Babylon was . . . besieging Jerusalem” (V. 2), and whatever field Jeremiah purchased would soon be Babylon’s. What fool makes an investment when everything would soon be lost?

Well, the person who’s listening to God—the One who intended a future no one else could envision. “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land” (V. 15). God saw more than the ruin. God promised to bring redemption, healing, and restoration. A ludicrous investment in a relationship or service for God isn’t foolish—it’s the wisest possible move when God leads us to make it (and it’s essential that we prayerfully seek to know He’s behind the instruction). A “foolish” investment in others as God leads makes all the sense in the world. WINN COLLIER
