하늘에서 우리의 기도를 들으신다

18개월 된 아기 매이슨은 엄마의 목소리를 한 번도 들어본 적이 없었습니다. 의사들이 아이에게 처음으로 보청기를 끼워줬을 때, 엄마 로린이 물었습니다. “내 말 들리니?” 아이의 눈이 밝아졌습니다. 로린이 “안녕아가!” 하고 부르자, 매이슨은 미소 지으며 옹알이로 응답했습니다. 로린은 눈물을 흘리며, 자신이 기적을 목격하고 있음을 알았습니다. 로린은 무작정 집에 쳐들어온 무장 괴한들이 쏜 총에 세 번이나 맞고 매이슨을 조산했습니다. 몸무게가 1 파운드(약 450그램)밖에 나가지 않았던 매이슨은 158일이나 중환자실에 있었는데, 청각장애는 고사하고 살아남는 것조차 기대하지 않았습니다.

마음 뭉클한 이 이야기는 우리의 간구를 들으시는 하나님을 생각나게 해줍니다. 솔로몬 왕은 특히 고난의 시기에 하나님의 열린 귀를 향하여 열성을 다해 기도했습니다. “비가 없고”(열왕기상 8:35), “기근이나 전염병이 있거나” 재앙이나 무슨 질병이 있든지(37절), 전쟁이나(44절) 죄악이 있을 때에도, “하늘에서 그들의 기도와 간구를 들으사 그들의 일을 돌아보옵소서”(45절)라고 솔로몬은 기도했습니다.

선하신 하나님은 우리의 마음을 감동시키는 약속으로 응답하셨습니다. “내 이름으로 일컫는 내 백성이 그들의 악한 길에서 떠나 스스로 낮추고 기도하여 내 얼굴을 찾으면 내가 하늘에서 듣고 그들의 죄를 사하고 그들의 땅을 고칠지라”(역대하 7:14). 하늘은 멀리 떨어져 있는 것처럼 보일지도 모릅니다. 그러나 예수님은 그분을 믿는 사람들과 함께 하십니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도를 들으시고 그 기도에 응답해 주십니다.

HEARING US FROM HEAVEN

At eighteen months old, little Maison had never heard his mother’s voice. Then doctors fitted him with his first hearing aids and his mom, Lauryn, asked him, “Can you hear me?” The child’s eyes lit up. “Hi, Baby!” Lauryn added. A smiling Maison responded to his mother with soft coos. In tears, Lauryn knew she’d witnessed a miracle. She’d given birth to Maison prematurely after gunmen shot her three times during a random home invasion. Weighing just one pound, Maison spent 158 days in intensive care and wasn’t expected to survive, let alone be able to hear.

That heart-warming story reminds me of the God who hears us. King Solomon prayed fervently for God’s attuned ear, especially during troubling times. When “there is no rain” (1 KINGS 8:35), during “famine or plague,” disaster or disease (V. 37), war (V. 44), and even sin, “hear from heaven their prayer and their plea,” Solomon prayed, “and uphold their cause” (V. 45).

In His goodness, God responded with a promise that still stirs our hearts. “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 CHRONICLES 7:14). Heaven may seem a long way off. Yet Jesus is with those who believe in Him. God hears our prayers, and He answers them. PATRICIA RAYBON

도피인가 평안인가?

온수 욕조를 설치할 때의 유익한 점들을 선전하는 광고판에 “도피”라는 글자가 크게 써 있었습니다. 그것이 내 관심을 끌어 자연히 생각하게 되었습니다. 나는 아내와 함께 앞으로 온수 욕조를 사면 어떨까 이야기한 적이 있었습니다. 그러면 마치 우리 집 뒷마당에서 휴가를 보내는 것 같을 것입니다! 청소하는 것과 전기세 나오는 것을 빼면 말입니다. 그러다가... 갑자기 내가 기대했던 도피가 내가 무언가로부터 도피할 필요가 있는 것처럼 들리기 시작했습니다.

사실 도피라는 말은 아주 유혹적입니다. 그 말은 안도감이나 편안함, 안전, ‘벗어남’ 같이, 우리가 원하는 어떤 것을 약속해 주기 때문입니다. 그 어떤 것이란 요즘의 우리 문화가 여러 가지로 우리를 유혹하고 집적거리는 것들입니다. 휴식을 취하거나 경치 좋은 곳으로 떠나는 것이 전혀 잘못이 아니지만, 인생의 고난에서 ‘도피하는 것’과 고난을 지니고 ‘하나님을 신뢰하는 것’은 다른 이야기입니다.

요한복음 16장에서 예수님은 제자들에게 장차 그들의 믿음이 시험받을 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 주님은 16장의 마지막에서 “세상에서 너희가 환난을 당할 것”이라고 말씀하시고는, “그러나 담대하라 내가 세상을 이기었노라”(33절)라고 약속해 주십니다. 예수님은 제자들이 절망에 빠지는 것을 원치 않으시고, 오히려 주님을 믿고 그분이 주시는 안식을 알기를 바라셨습니다. “이것을 너희에게 이르는 것은 너희로 내 안에서 평안을 누리게 하려 함이라”(33절).

예수님은 우리에게 고통 없는 삶을 약속하지 않으십니다. 그러나 우리가 주님을 믿고 주님 안에서 안식할 때 이 세상이 우리에게 팔려고 하는 그 어떤 도피보다 더 깊고 더 만족스러운 평화를 경험할 수 있다고 주님은 약속하십니다.

ESCAPE OR PEACE?

“ESCAPE.” The billboard shouts the benefits of having a hottub installed. It gets my attention—and gets me thinking. My wife and I have talked about getting a hot tub . . .someday. It’d be like a vacation in our backyard! Except for the cleaning. And the electric bill. And . . . suddenly, the hoped-for escape starts to sound like something I might need escape from.

Still, that word entices so effectively because it promises something we want: Relief. Comfort. Security. Escape. It’s something our culture tempts and teases us with in many ways. Now, there’s nothing wrong with resting or a getaway to someplace beautiful. But there’s a difference between escaping life’s hardships and trusting God with them.

In John 16, Jesus tells His disciples that the next chapter of their lives will test their faith. “In this world you will have trouble,” He summarizes at the end. And then He adds this promise, “But take heart! I have overcome the world” (V. 33). Jesus didn’t want His disciples to cave in to despair. Instead, He invited them to trust Him, to know the rest He provides: “I have told you these things,” he said, “so that in me you may have peace” (V. 33).

Jesus doesn’t promise us a pain-free life. But He does promise that as we trust and rest in Him, we can experience a peace that’s deeper and more satisfying than any escape the world tries to sell us. ADAM R. HOLZ

모래화판식 용서

그 작은 빨간 직사각형 상자는 마술상자였습니다. 어렸을 때 나는 그것을 가지고 몇 시간이고 놀 수 있었습니다. 상자 위에 있는 손잡이 하나를 돌리면 화면에 수평선이 그려졌습니다. 또 하나의 손잡이를 돌리면 수직선이 그려졌습니다. 두 손잡이를 같이 돌리면 대각선과 원, 그리고 새로운 모양들을 그릴 수 있었습니다. 그러나 진짜 마술은 내가 이 장난감 모래화판을 뒤집어 조금 흔든 후에 다시 똑바로 세웠을 때 일어났습니다. 다시 빈 화면이 되어서 새로운 모양을 그릴 수 있게 해준 것입니다.

하나님의 용서는 이 장난감 모래화판과 매우 흡사하게 작용합니다. 하나님은 우리의 죄를 깨끗이 씻어내시고 우리를 위해 깨끗한 화면을 만들어 주십니다. 우리는 저지른 잘못을 기억할지 몰라도, 하나님은 용서하시고 잊어버리십니다. 그분은 우리의 죄를 씻어내시고, 우리의 죄 때문에 우리를 비난하지 않으십니다. 하나님은 우리의 죄의 행동에 따라 우리를 처벌하지 않으시고(시편 103:10) 용서를 통해 은혜를 베푸십니다. 하나님의 용서를 구하면 우리는 깨끗해지며 새로운 삶을 누리게 됩니다. 우리는 하나님이 주신 놀라운 선물 때문에 죄책감과 수치심을 버릴 수 있습니다.

시편 기자는 우리에게 동이 서에서 먼 것 같이 우리의 죄가 우리에게서 멀어졌다고 일깨워 줍니다(12절). 그보다 더 먼 것은 없습니다! 하나님이 보시기에 우리의 죄는 더 이상 주홍 글씨나 나쁜 그림처럼 우리에게 붙어있지 않습니다. 그것이 바로 하나님의 놀라운 은혜와 자비에 대해 기뻐하며 감사할 이유입니다.

ETCH A SKETCH FORGIVENESS

The little red rectangular box was magical. As a kid, I could play with it for hours. When I turned one knob on the box, I could create a horizontal line on its screen. Turn the other knob and voila—a vertical line. When I turned the knobs together, I could make diagonal lines, circles, and creative designs. But the real magic came when I turned my Etch A Sketch toy upside down, shook it a little and turned it right side up. A blank screen appeared, offering me the opportunity to create a new design.

God’s forgiveness works much like that Etch A Sketch. He wipes away our sins, creating a clean canvas for us. Even if we remember wrongs we committed, God chooses to forgive and forget. He’s wiped them out and doesn’t hold our sins against us. He doesn’t treat us according to our sinful actions (PSALM 103:10) but extends grace through forgiveness. We have a clean slate—a new life awaiting us when we seek God’s forgiveness. We can be rid of guilt and shame because of His amazing gift to us.

The psalmist reminds us that our sins have been separated from us as far as the east is separated from the west (V. 12). That’s as far away as you can get! In God’s eyes, our sins no longer cling to us like a scarlet letter or a bad drawing. That’s reason to rejoice and to thank God for His amazing grace and mercy. KATARA PATTON

내 친구 빌은 그의 지인인 제라드에 대해 “아주 오랫동안 하나님으로부터 아주 멀리” 있었다고 했습니다. 그런데 어느 날 빌이 제라드를 만나서 하나님의 사랑이 어떻게 우리를 구원하셨는지 설명해 주자 제라드는 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다. 그는 눈물을 흘리며 자기의 죄를 회개하고 그리스도께 자신의 삶을 드렸습니다. 곧이어 빌이 제라드에게 어떤 느낌이 드는지 묻자, 그는 눈물을 닦으며 “씻겨졌어요.”라고 간단하게 대답했습니다.

얼마나 놀라운 반응입니까! 그것은 예수님이 십자가에서 우리를 위해 희생하신 것을 믿는 믿음을 통해 가능해진 구원의 본질과 정확히 일치합니다. 고린도전서 6장에서 바울은 하나님에 대한 불순종이 어떻게 그분에게서 멀어지게 하는지 몇 가지 예를 든 후, “너희 중에 이와 같은 자들이 있더니 주 예수 그리스도의 이름과 우리 하나님의 성령 안에서 씻음과 거룩함과 의롭다 하심을 받았느니라”(11절)라고 말합니다. “씻음”, “거룩함”, “의롭다 하심”을 받았다는 말은 신자가 용서받고 하나님 앞에 바로 서게 되었다는 것을 의미합니다.

WASHED

My friend Bill described Gerard, an acquaintance of his, as being “very far from God for a very long time.” But one day, after Bill met with Gerard and explained to him how God’s love has provided the way for us to be saved, Gerard became a believer in Jesus. Through tears, he repented of his sin and gave his life to Christ. Afterward, Bill asked Gerard how he felt. Wiping away tears, he answered simply, “Washed.”

What an amazing response! That’s precisely the essence of salvation made possible through faith in Jesus’ sacrifice for us on the cross. In 1 Corinthians 6, after Paul gives examples of how disobedience against God leads to separation from Him, he says, “That is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” (V. 11). “Washed,” “sanctified, “justified”—words that point to believers being forgiven and made right with Him.

Titus 3:4–5 tells us more about this miraculous thing called salvation. “God our Savior . . . saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth.” Our sin keeps us from God, but through faith in Jesus, sin’s penalty is washed away. We become new creations (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17), gain access to our heavenly Father (EPHESIANS 2:18), and are made clean (1 JOHN 1:7). He alone provides what we need to be washed. DAVE BRANON

하나님께 가까이 가기

코로나바이러스 여파로, 은행의 귀중품 보관소에서 무언가를 찾는데 이전보다 더 많은 검증 단계를 거쳐야 했습니다. 이제는 먼저 예약을 하고, 은행에 도착하여 들어가기 위해 전화를 걸고, 신분증과 서명을 보여주고 나서, 은행원이 금고로 안내할 때까지 기다려야 했습니다. 안으로 들어가면, 금속 상자 안에서 내가 필요한 것을 찾을 때까지 그 무거운 문은 다시 잠깁니다. 이런 지시들을 따르지 않으면 아예 들어갈 수가 없습니다.

구약에서 하나님은 성막 안의 지성소라고 불리는 곳에 들어가기 위한 특별한 규정들을 제정하셨습니다(출애굽기 26:33). “성소와 지성소를 분리”하는 휘장 뒤로는 오직 대제사장만이 한 해에 한 번 들어갈 수 있었습니다(히브리서 9:7). 아론과 그의 후임 대제사장들은 들어가기 전에 예물을 가져오고 몸을 씻은 후 거룩한 옷을 입어야 했습니다(레위기 16:3-4). 하나님의 지시들은 건강이나 안전 때문이 아니라, 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님의 거룩하심과 우리가 용서가 필요함을 가르치기 위한 것이었습니다.

예수님이 죽으시던 순간에 성소 휘장이 찢어진 것은(마태복음 27:51) 우리의 죄를 용서하기 위해 주님이 죽으셨다는 것을 믿는 모든 사람들이 하나님 앞으로 나아갈 수 있다는 것을 상징적으로 보여줍니다. 성소 휘장이 찢어짐으로 우리는 영원히 기뻐할 수 있게 되었습니다. 예수님께서 우리가 언제나 하나님께 가까이 나아갈 수 있게 해주신 것입니다!

DRAWN NEAR

In the wake of the coronavirus, retrieving something from my safety deposit box required even more layers of protocol than before. Now I had to make an appointment, call when I arrived to be granted entrance to the bank, show my identification and signature, and then wait to be escorted into the vault by a designated banker. Once inside, the heavy doors locked again until I’d found what I needed inside the metal box. Unless I followed the instructions, I wasn’t able to enter.

In the Old Testament, God had specific protocols for entering part of the tabernacle called the Most Holy Place (EXODUS 26:33). Behind a special curtain, one that “separate[d] the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place,” only the high priest could enter once a year (HEBREWS 9:7). Aaron, and the high priests who would come after him, were to bring offerings, bathe, and wear sacred garments before entering (LEVITICUS 16:3–4). God’s instructions weren’t for health or security reasons; they were meant to teach the Israelites about the holiness of God and our need for forgiveness.

At the moment of Jesus’ death, that special curtain was torn (MATTHEW 27:51), symbolically showing that all people who believe in His sacrifice for their forgiveness of sin can enter God’s presence. The tear in the tabernacle curtain is reason for our unending joy—Jesus has enabled us to draw near to God always! KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

진정한 희망

1960년대 초 미국은 밝은 미래에 대한 기대감으로 가득 차 있었습니다. 젊은 대통령 존 에프 케네디가 뉴프런티어(신개척운동), 평화봉사단, 그리고 달 탐사 과업을 제시했던 것입니다. 번영하는 경제로 많은 사람들은 미래가 단지 “좋은 시간만 지속될” 것으로 낙관하였습니다. 그러다가 베트남전쟁이 확산되고, 국가적인 불안정이 닥치며, 케네디가 암살당하고, 이전의 낙관적인 사회에서 통용되어 온 규범들이 무너졌습니다. 낙관주의만으로는 충분하지 않았으며, 그 결과 환멸이 만연하게 되었습니다.

그때, 1967년 신학자 위르겐 몰트만의 ‘희망의 신학’은 보다 명확한 비전을 보여주었습니다. 이 길은 낙관주의의 길이 아니라 희망의 길이었습니다. 이 둘은 같지 않습니다. 몰트만은 낙관주의는 현재 상황에 근거하고 있지만, 희망은 우리의 상황과 관계없이 하나님의 신실하심에 뿌리를 두고 있다고 단언했습니다.

GENUINE HOPE

In the early 1960s, the US was filled with anticipation of a bright future. Youthful President John F. Kennedy had introduced the New Frontier, the Peace Corps, and the task of reaching the moon. A thriving economy caused many people to expect the future to simply “let the good times roll.” Then the war in Vietnam escalated, national unrest unfolded, Kennedy was assassinated, and the accepted norms of that previously optimistic society were dismantled. Optimism simply wasn’t enough, and in its wake, disillusionment prevailed.

Then, in 1967, theologian Jürgen Moltmann’s A Theology of Hope pointed to a clearer vision. This path wasn’t the way of optimism but the way of hope. The two aren’t the same thing. Moltmann affirmed that optimism is based on the circumstances of the moment, but hope is rooted in God’s faithfulness—regardless of our situation.

What’s the source of this hope? Peter wrote, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! 불일치에 대처하기

큰 소셜미디어 기업 트위터는 세계 곳곳의 사람들이 짧은 소리로 손쉽게 자신의 의견을 표현할 수 있는 플랫폼을 만들었습니다. 그러나 최근 몇 년 간, 각 사람들이 자신이 동의하지 않는 다른 사람의 태도나 삶의 방식을 질책하는 매개체로 트위터를 사용하게 되면서 이것이 좀더 복잡해져 버렸습니다. 어느 날이든 플랫폼에 접속하면 “실시간으로 많은 이들이 반응한” 사람의 이름을 적어도 하나는 찾을 수 있습니다. 그리고 그 사람의 이름을 클릭하면 떠오르는 어떤 논쟁에 대한 수많은 사람들의 의견을 볼 수 있습니다.

우리는 이제 사람들의 신념에서부터 그들이 입는 옷에 이르기까지 모든 것을 공개적으로 비판할 수 있게 되었습니다. 그러나 사실 비방하고 미워하는 태도는 예수님을 믿는 자로 우리를 부르신 하나님의 뜻에 어긋나는 것입니다. 때로는 불일치에 대처해야 할 때도 있지만, 신자인 우리는 언제나 “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음”(골로새서 3:12)으로 행해야 한다고 성경은 상기시켜 줍니다. 하나님은 심하게 비난하는 대신 우리 적들에게까지도 “불만이 있거든 서로 용납하여 피차 용서하라”(13절)고 권면하십니다.

이 권면은 생활 방식이나 신념에서 우리와 일치하는 사람들에게만 적용되는 것이 아닙니다. 그렇게 하기가 쉽지 않을 때라도, 우리가 주님의 사랑으로 구원받았음을 알고 그리스도께서 우리를 인도하실 때 만나게 되는 모든 이들에게 은혜와 사랑을 전해줄 수 있기를 바랍니다.

DEALING WITH DISAGREEMENT

The social media powerhouse Twitter created a platform where people all over the world express opinions in short sound bites. In recent years, however, this formula has become more complex as individuals have begun to leverage Twitter as a tool to reprimand others for attitudes and lifestyles they disagree with. Log on to the platform on any given day, and you’ll find the name of at least one person “trending.” Click on that name, and you’ll find millions of people expressing opinions about whatever controversy has emerged.

We’ve learned to publicly criticize everything from the beliefs people hold to the clothes they wear. The reality, however, is that a critical and unloving attitude doesn’t align with who God has called us to be as believers in Jesus. While there will be times when we have to deal with disagreement, the Bible reminds us that as believers we’re to always conduct ourselves with “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (COLOSSIANS 3:12). Instead of being harshly critical, even of our enemies, God urges us to “bear with each other and forgive one another if [we have] a grievance” (V. 13).

This treatment isn’t limited to the people whose lifestyles and beliefs we agree with. Even when it’s difficult, may we extend grace and love to everyone we encounter as Christ guides us, recognizing that we’ve been redeemed by His love. KIMYA LODER

기본에 충실하기

결심은 깨어지기 마련인 것 같습니다. 어떤 사람들은 이 같은 현실을 조롱삼아 새해맞이 결심을 ‘손쉽게 달성할 수 있는’ 것들로 정하기도 합니다. 소셜미디어에 올라온 몇 가지 예를 들어보겠습니다.
신호대기 중에 다른 운전자에게 손 흔들기.
마라톤 시합에 등록하기. 그리고는 뛰지 않기.
미루는 것을 중단하기. 내일부터.
시리(스마트폰 도움 앱)의 도움 없이 길 잃어버리기.
자기 운동하는 모습을 인터넷에 올리는 사람들과 친구관계 끊기.
그러나 새로운 시작이라는 이 생각이 아주 심각한 경우일 때도 있습니다.
유배당한 유다 백성들에게는 새로운 시작이 정말로 필요했습니다. 70년의 포로생활 중 20년이 갓 지났을 때 하나님은 에스겔 선지자를 통해 “내가... 야곱의 사로잡힌 자를 돌아오게 하리라”(에스겔 39:25)고 약속하시며 그들을 격려해 주셨습니다.

하지만 이 민족은 먼저 기본, 곧 800년 전에 하나님께서 모세에게 주셨던 명령으로 돌아가야 했습니다. 이 명령에는 새해맞이 축제를 지키는 것도 포함되어 있었습니다. 고대 유대 백성들은 이른 봄에 이 축제를 열었습니다(45:18). 그들의 축제의 중요한 목적은 하나님의 성품과 그분이 바라시는 바를 다시 기억하는 것이었습니다. 하나님은 유대인 지도자들에게 “포악과 겁탈을 제거하여 버리고 정의와 공의를 행하고”(9절) 정직하게 살기를 요구하셨습니다(10절).

이 교훈은 우리에게도 마찬가지로 적용됩니다. 우리의 믿음은 행동으로 옮겨져야 하며, 그렇지 않으면 아무 가치도 없습니다(야고보서 2:17). 이 새해에 하나님께서 우리에게 필요한 것을 공급해 주실 때 우리의 믿음 생활도 다음과 같은 기본으로 돌아갈 수 있기를 바랍니다. “주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라”, 그리고 “네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라”(마태복음 22:37-39).

BACK TO THE BASICS

Resolutions, it seems, are made to be broken. Some folks poke fun at this reality by proposing New Year’s vows that are—shall we say—attainable. Here are a few from social media:
Wave to fellow motorists at stoplights.
Sign up for a marathon. Don’t run it.
Stop procrastinating—tomorrow.
Get lost without any help from Siri.
Unfriend everyone who posts their workout regimen.
The concept of a fresh start can be serious business, however.
The exiled people of Judah desperately needed one. Just over two decades into their seventy-year captivity, God brought encouragement to them through the prophet Ezekiel, promising, “I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob” (EZEKIEL 39:25).

But the nation first needed to return to the basics—the instructions God had given to Moses eight hundred years earlier. This included observing a feast at the new year. For the ancient Jewish people, that began in early spring (45:18). A major purpose of their festivals was to remind them of God’s character and His expectations. He told their leaders, “Give up your violence and oppression and do what is just and right” (V. 9), and he insisted on honesty (V. 10).

The lesson applies to us too. Our faith must be put into practice or it’s worthless (JAMES 2:17). In this new year, as God provides what we need, may we live out our faith by returning to the basics: “Love the Lord your God,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (MATTHEW 22:37–39). TIM GUSTAFSON

굴하지 않는 믿음

실버레이크의 북쪽 해안을 따라 모래 언덕이 우뚝 솟아오르면서 근처의 주택들이 흐르는 모래 속으로 가라앉을 위험에 빠졌습니다. 주민들은 집을 보호하기 위해 모래 언덕을 옮기려고 시도해보았지만 잘 지어진 집들이 바로 그들의 눈앞에서 묻히는 것을 무력하게 지켜볼 수밖에 없었습니다. 지역 보안관이 최근에 파괴된 작은 집을 정리하는 것을 감독하면서 그 무너진 과정을 막을 수 없었다고 시인했습니다. 집주인들이 이 불안정한 제방의 위험을 피하려고 엄청난 노력을 기울였지만 모래 언덕은 결코 단단한 지지층을 제공해주지 못했습니다.

예수님은 모래 위에 집을 짓는 것이 헛되다는 것을 아셨습니다. 주님은 거짓 선지자들을 경계하라고 제자들에게 경고하신 후, 즐겨 순종하는 것이 지혜로운 모습이라는 것을 확신시켜 주셨습니다(마태복음 7:15-23). 주님은 누구나 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 “행하는 자는 그 집을 반석 위에 지은 지혜로운 사람 같다”고 말씀하셨습니다(24절). 그러나 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 실천하지 않는 사람은 “그 집을 모래 위에 지은 어리석은 사람과 같습니다”(26절).

고난이나 염려의 무게 때문에 우리의 상황이 우리를 묻어 버리는 흐르는 모래처럼 느껴질 때, 우리는 우리의 반석이신 그리스도께 희망을 두어야 합니다. 주님은 그분의 변함없는 성품의 흔들리지 않는 기반 위에 세워진 우리의 굴하지 않는 믿음을 키워 나갈 수 있도록 도와주실 것입니다.

RESILIENT FAITH

Towering dunes along the north shore of Silver Lake put nearby homes at risk of sinking into shifting sands. Though residents tried moving mounds of sand in efforts to protect their homes, they watched helplessly as well-built houses were buried right before their eyes. As a local sheriff oversaw the cleanup of a recently destroyed cottage, he affirmed the process couldn’t be prevented. No matter how hard homeowners tried to avoid the dangers of these unsteady embankments, the dunes simply couldn’t provide a strong foundational support.

Jesus knew the futility of building a house on sand. After warning the disciples to be wary of false prophets, He assured them that loving obedience demonstrates wisdom (MATTHEW 7:15–23). He said that everyone who hears His words and “puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (V. 24). The one who hears God’s words and chooses not to put them into practice, however, is “like a foolish man who built his house on sand” (V. 26).

When circumstances feel like shifting sands burying us under the weight of affliction or worries, we can place our hope in Christ, our Rock. He will help us develop resilient faith built on the unshakable foundation of His unchanging character. XOCHITL DIXON

끝없는 사랑

산드라는 이렇게 회상했습니다. “할아버지는 나를 바닷가에 데려갈 때마다 늘 시계를 벗어 두셨어요. 어느 날 할아버지께 왜 그러시냐고 여쭤봤지요.”

“할아버지는 미소 지으며 대답하셨어요. ‘그건 너와 함께 있는 이 순간들이 내게 얼마나 중요한지를 네가 알아주었으면 해서 란다. 시간이 흘러 가더라도 난 그저 너와 함께 있고 싶구나.’”

나는 산드라가 그녀의 할아버지 장례식에서 이렇게 추모하는 것을 들었습니다. 그것은 할아버지와 함께 한 삶 중에서 산드라에게 가장 기억에 남는 추억들 중의 하나였습니다. 다른 사람들이 우리를 위해 시간을 할애할 때 그것이 우리를 얼마나 가치 있게 느끼게 해주는지 생각하면서, 하나님의 사랑의 돌보심에 대한 성경말씀이 떠올랐습니다.

하나님은 항상 우리를 위해 시간을 내주십니다. 다윗은 시편 145 편에서 이렇게 기도했습니다. “[여호와께서는] 손을 펴사 모든 생물의 소원을 만족하게 하시나이다 여호와께서는 그 모든 행위에 의로우시며 그 모든 일에 은혜로우시도다 여호와께서는... 가까이 하시는도다”(16-18절).

하나님은 그분의 선하심과 사려 깊은 관심으로 우리에게 숨 쉴 공기와 먹을 음식을 제공하시면서 매 순간 우리의 삶을 유지시켜 주십니다. 만물의 창조주이신 하나님은 사랑이 풍부하셔서 우리 존재의 가장 복잡하고 세밀한 부분까지도 자비롭게 돌봐주십니다.

하나님의 사랑은 너무나 깊고 끝이 없어서, 주님의 친절과 자비로 주님과 함께하는 영원한 생명과 기쁨을 향한 길을 열어놓고 이렇게 말씀하시는 것 같습니다. “나는 너를 아주 많이 사랑한단다. 시간이 흘러 가더라도 그저 영원히 너와 함께 있고 싶구나.”

WHEN LOVE NEVER ENDS

“Whenever my grandfather took me to the beach,” Sandra reminisced, “he always took off his watch and put it away. One day I asked him why.” “He smiled and replied, ‘Because I want you to know how important my moments with you are to me. I just want to be with you and let time go by.’ ”

I heard Sandra share that recollection at her grandfather’s funeral. It was one of her favorite memories of their life together. As I reflected on how valued it makes us feel when others take time for us, it brought to mind Scripture’s words on God’s loving care.

God always makes time for us. David prayed in Psalm 145, “You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The Lordis near” (VV. 16–18).

God’s goodness and thoughtful attention sustain our lives each moment, providing us with air to breathe and food to eat. Because He is rich in love, the Creator of all things mercifully crafts even the most intricate details of our existence.

God’s love is so deep and unending that in His kindness and mercy He’s even opened the way to eternal life and joy in His presence, as if to say, “I love you so much, I just want to be with you forever, and let time go by.” JAMES BANKS
