새 출발 효과

브라이오니는 서른 살이 되었을 때 자신이 전혀 좋아하지 않았던 영업 일을 여전히 하고 있다는 사실에 마음이 괴로웠습니다. 그래서 이제는 더 이상 미루지 않고 새로운 직업을 찾아야겠다고 결심했습니다. 한편 데이비드는 새해 전날 거울을 보면서 새해에는 반드시 살을 빼야겠다고 맹세했습니다. 그리고 분노를 조절하는데 실패하고 또 한 달을 그냥 보낸 제임스는 다음 달에는 더 열심히 노력하겠다고 스스로 다짐했습니다.

새달, 새해 또는 중요한 생일이 시작될 때 무언가를 바꿔야겠다고 맹세한 적이 있다면 당신만 그런 것이 아닙니다. 학자들은 그것에 ‘새 출발 효과’라는 이름까지 붙여 놓았습니다. 그들은 우리가 이와 같이 달력 상의 어느 시점에서 더 자신의 삶을 평가하고, 실패를 뒤로하고 다시 시작하는 경향이 있다고 말합니다. 더 나은 사람이 되고자 우리는 새로운 시작을 갈망합니다.

예수님을 믿는 믿음은 이런 갈망에 큰 영향을 주어, 우리의 가능한 최상의 모습에 대한 비전을 갖게 하고(골로새서 3:12-14), 과거의 우리 자신을 버릴 것을 요구합니다(5-9절). 믿음으로 말미암은 이 변화는 사람의 결심이나 맹세 만이 아닌, 하나님의 능력으로 가능합니다. 예수님을 믿을 때 우리는 새 사람이 되고, 우리를 온전케 하기 위해 하나님의 영이 우리 안에서 역사하십니다(10절; 디도서 3:5).

예수님을 믿고 구원받는 것은 궁극적인 새로운 시작입니다. 그리고 달력을 보며 특별한 날짜를 기다릴 필요가 없으며, 지금 당장 새로운 삶을 시작할 수 있습니다.

FRESH START EFFECT

When Bryony turned thirty, she was sad to still be in a sales job she’d never liked. She decided it was time to stop procrastinating and find a new career. For David, New Year’s Eve had him looking in the mirror vowing this would be the year he lost weight. And for James, it was watching another month pass without his angry outbursts decreasing. Next month, he promised himself, he would try harder.

If you’ve ever vowed to change at the start of a new month, new year, or a major birthday, you’re not alone. Researchers even have a name for it: the fresh start effect. They suggest that at calendar points like these we’re more prone to assess our lives and try putting our failures behind us to start over. Wanting to be better people, we long for a fresh start.

Faith in Jesus speaks powerfully to this longing, offering a vision of what our best selves can be (COLOSSIANS 3:12–14) and calling us to leave our past selves behind (VV. 5–9). It offers this change not by decisions and vows alone, but by divine power. When we believe in Jesus, we become new people, and God’s Spirit works in us to make us whole (V. 10; TITUS 3:5).

Receiving salvation in Jesus is the ultimate fresh start. And it doesn’t need to wait for a special calendar date. Your new life can start right now. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

말씀과 새해

미쉘란은 필리핀에서 자라면서 여러 가지 어려움을 겪었지만, 항상 글을 좋아했고 글을 읽으면서 위로를 얻었습니다. 그러던 어느 대학 시절, 요한복음 1장을 읽다가 그녀의 “돌 같이 굳은 마음이 흔들렸습니다.” 마치 누군가가 이렇게 말하는 것 같았습니다. “그래, 넌 글을 좋아해. 그런데 말이야. 여기 어떤 글, 곧 ‘영원한 말씀’이 있어... 그 ‘말씀’은 지금도 언제나처럼 어둠을 걷어낼 수 있어. 사람으로 오신 그 ‘말씀’이 너를 사랑하신단다.”

그녀는 그때 독자들에게 창세기의 시작인 “태초에...”(창세기 1:1)를 떠올려주는 글로 시작하는 요한복음을 읽고 있었습니다. 요한은 예수님이 태초에 하나님과 함께 계셨을 뿐만 아니라 바로 하나님이셨음을 보여주려고 했습니다(요한복음 1:1). 그리고 이 살아 있는 ‘말씀’이 사람이 되어 “우리 가운데 거하셨습니다”(14절). 더 나아가 예수님을 영접하고 그의 이름을 믿는 자들은 누구나 하나님의 자녀가 됩니다(12절).

미쉘란은 그날 하나님의 사랑을 받아들여 “하나님께로부터 난 자”(13절)가 되었습니다. 자기 가족이 걸려있던 중독에서 자신을 구해주신 분이 하나님이심을 인정하며, 이제는 예수님의 복음에 관한 글을 쓰면서 자신의 글로 ‘살아있는 말씀’에 대해 전하는 것을 기뻐하고 있습니다.

우리가 그리스도를 믿는 신자라면 우리도 하나님의 메시지와 사랑을 전할 수 있습니다. 2022년을 시작하면서 이 한 해에 우리는 어떤 은혜로 가득 찬 말을 할 수 있을까요?

THE WORD AND A NEW YEAR

Michellan faced challenges while growing up in the Philippines, but she always loved words and found comfort in them. Then one day while attending university, she read the first chapter in the gospel of John, and her “stone heart stirred.” She felt like someone was saying, “Yes, you love words, and guess what? There is an Eternal Word, one who . . . can cut through the darkness, now and always. A Word who took on flesh. A Word who can love you back.”

She was reading the gospel that begins with words that would have reminded John’s readers of the opening of Genesis: “In the beginning . . .” (GENESIS 1:1). John sought to show that Jesus was not only with God at the beginning of time but was God (JOHN 1:1). And this living Word became a man “and made his dwelling among us” (V. 14). Further, those who receive Him, believing in His name, become His children (V. 12).

Michellan embraced God’s love that day and was “born of God” (V. 13). She credits God for saving her from her family’s pattern of addiction and now writes about the good news of Jesus, delighting in sharing her words about the Living Word.

크리스마스에 하루 더 가까이

“크리스마스가 끝난 게 믿어지지 않아요!” 딸이 실망스러운 표정으로 말했습니다.

그 마음을 알 것 같습니다. 크리스마스가 지나고 나면 왠지 모르게 서운한 기분이 듭니다. 선물은 다 열어봤고 트리와 전구들을 치워야 합니다. 별로 할 일 없는 1월, 그리고 연휴 동안 늘어난 몸무게가 기다리고 있습니다. 크리스마스와 함께 찾아왔던 벅찬 기대감들이 갑자기 아득히 멀어진 것만 같습니다.

몇 년 전, 크리스마스 장식물들을 정리하며 깨달았습니다. ‘지금이 몇 월 몇 일이든 다음 크리스마스에 하루만큼 더 가까워졌잖아.’ 그 이후로 나는 이 말을 자주 합니다.

그러나 크리스마스의 이면에는 일시적인 기념을 넘어서는 훨씬 더 중요한 영적인 실재가 있습니다. 그것은 바로 예수님이 가져다주신 구원과 그분의 재림에 대한 우리의 소망입니다. 성경은 우리에게 그리스도가 재림하실 것을 주목하여 기다리고 갈망하라고 반복해서 말합니다. 나는 바울이 빌립보서 3:15-21에서 말한 것을 아주 좋아합니다. 여기에서 그는 두 가지 삶의 방식을 비교합니다. 하나는 “땅의 일을 생각하는” 세상적인 방식이며 (19절) , 다른 하나는 예수님의 재림에 대한 소망으로 살아가는 방식입니다. “우리의 시민권은 하늘에 있는지라 거기로부터 구원하는 자 곧 주 예수 그리스도를 기다리노니” (20절).

ONE DAY CLOSER TO CHRISTMAS

“I can’t believe Christmas is over,” my dejected daughter said.

I know how she feels: The aftermath of Christmas can feel dreary. Presents have been opened. The tree and lights must come down. Listless January—and, for many, the need to shed holiday pounds—awaits. Christmas—and the breathless
anticipation that comes with it—suddenly feels eons away.

A few years ago, as we were putting Christmas stuff away, I realized: no matter what the calendar says, we’re always one day closer to the next Christmas. It’s become something I say frequently.

But far more important than our temporal celebration of Christmas is the spiritual reality behind it: the salvation Jesus brought into our world and our hope for His return. Scripture talks repeatedly about watching, waiting, and longing for Christ’s
second coming. I love what Paul says in Philippians 3:15–21. He contrasts the world’s way of living—with “mind[s] set on earthly things” (V. 19) —with a lifestyle shaped by hope in Jesus’ return: “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (V. 20).

The reality that our “citizenship is in heaven” changes everything, including what we hope for and how we live. That hope is fortified by the knowledge that with every passing day, we’re indeed one day closer to Jesus’ return. ADAM R. HOLZ

미국에서 골드러시가 한창일 때 캘리포니아로 향했던 금사냥꾼 에드워드 잭슨은 1849년 5월 20일자 일기에 질병과 죽음으로 얼룩진 힘든 마차 여행을 비탄하는 글을 남겼습니다. “부디 내 뼈를 여기 묻지 말고 가능하면 집으로 가져다 주시오.” 또다른 금사냥꾼 존 워커는 “이건 일생일대의 대박이야... 다른 사람들에게는 절대로 알리지 말아야지.”라고 기록했습니다.

사실 워커는 고향으로 돌아가 농사와 목장일, 그리고 지역 정치인으로서 큰 성공을 이루었습니다. 그의 가족이 ‘앤티크 로드쇼’라는 미국 TV 프로그램에 나와 누렇게 색이 바랜 옛 편지들을 소개했을 때 그 편지들은 수천 달러의 가치가 있다고 평가를 받았습니다. 프로그램 진행자는 “그는 골드러시에서 정말 귀중한 것을 얻었네요. 바로 이 편지들 말입니다.”라고 말했습니다.

하지만 더 귀중한 것은 워커와 잭슨이 좀 더 실제적인 삶을 유지하게 해준 지혜를 얻어 집으로 돌아갔다는 사실입니다. 솔로몬이 지혜에 대해서 한 말을 깊이 생각해 보십시오. “지혜를 얻은 자...는 복이 있나니... 지혜는 그 얻은 자에게 생명 나무라” (잠언 3:13, 18) . 지혜로운 선택은 “은을 얻는 것보다 낫고 그 이익이 정금보다 낫습니다” (14절) . 왜냐하면 그것은 “사모하는 모든 것으로도 이에 비교할 수 없기” 때문입니다 (15절).

BETTER THAN GOLD

When gold seeker Edward Jackson set out for California during the Great Gold Rush in the US, his diary entry on May 20, 1849, lamented his grueling wagon journey, marked by disease and death. “O do not leave my bones here,” he wrote. “If possible let them lay at home.” Another gold-seeker named John Walker penned, “It is the most complete lottery that you can imagine . . . . I cannot advise any person to come.”

Walker, in fact, returned home and succeeded at farming, ranching, and state politics. When a family member took Walker’s yellowing letters to the American TV program Antiques Roadshow, they were valued at several thousand dollars. Said the TV host, “So he did get something valuable out of the Gold Rush. The letters.”

Even more, both Walker and Jackson returned home after gaining wisdom that caused them to take hold of a more practical life. Consider these words about wisdom from King Solomon, “Blessed are those who find wisdom. . . . She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her” (PROVERBS 3:13, 18) . A wise choice is “more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold” (V. 14) —making wisdom more precious than any earthly desire (V. 15).

“Long life is in her right hand . . . and all her paths are peace” (VV. 16–17) . Our challenge, therefore, is to hold tight to wisdom, not shiny wishes. It’s a path God will bless. PATRICIA RAYBON

사자, 어린 양, 구원자!

두마리의 위엄 있는 사자상이 뉴욕 공공 도서관 입구를 지키고 있습니다. 대리석을 깎아 만든 그 사자상은 1911년 개관 이후 자랑스럽게 그곳에 서있습니다. 처음에는 도서관 설립자들을 기리고자 레오 레녹스와 레오 애스터라는 별명을 붙였습니다. 그러나 대공황 기간 동안 뉴욕시장인 피오렐로 라과르디아가 그 어려운 시간들을 지나며 뉴욕 시민들이 보여주어야 할 덕목이라고 생각했던 ‘투지’와 ‘인내’로 이름을 바꾸었습니다. 오늘날에도 그들은 여전히 투지와 인내로 불립니다.

성경은 고난 가운데 용기를 주는 살아 있고 힘센 사자를 묘사하는데, 이 사자는 다른 이름들로도 알려져 있습니다. 요한 사도는 천국 환상을 보며 하나님의 심판과 구원에 관한 계획이 담긴 봉인된 두루마리를 열 사람이 아무도 없다는 것을 알고 울었습니다. 그때 요한은 이런 말을 들었습니다. “울지 말라 유다 지파의 사자... 가 이겼으니 그 두루마리와 그 일곱 인을 떼시리라” (요한계시록 5:5).

LION, LAMB, SAVIOR!

Two stately stone lions watch over the entrance to the New York Public Library. Hewn from marble, they’ve stood there proudly since the library’s dedication in 1911. They were first nicknamed Leo Lenox and Leo Astor to honor the library’s founders. But during the Great Depression, New York’s Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia renamed them Fortitude and Patience, virtues he thought New Yorkers should demonstrate in those challenging years. The lions are still called Fortitude and Patience today.

The Bible describes a living, powerful Lion who also gives encouragement in trouble and is known by other names. In his vision of heaven, the apostle John wept when he saw that no one was able to open the sealed scroll containing God’s plan of judgment and redemption. Then John was told, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah . . . has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals” (REVELATION 5:5).

Yet in the very next verse, John describes something else entirely: “Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne” (V. 6) . The Lion and the Lamb are the same person: Jesus. He’s the conquering King and “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (JOHN 1:29) . Through His strength and His cross, we receive mercy and forgiveness so that we may live in joy and wonder at all He is forever! JAMES BANKS

우리가 사랑하는 교회의 아버지 존 크리소스톰은 “영혼의 상태를 다각도로 살피려면 목자에게 위대한 지혜와 천 개의 눈이 필요하다.” 라고 썼습니다. 크리소스톰은 다른 이들을 영적으로 잘 돌보는 것이 얼마나 복잡한 일인지에 관한 토론에서 이 말을 썼습니다. 다른 사람에게
치유를 강요하는 것은 불가능하기 때문에 그들의 마음에 많은 공감과 연민으로 다가가야 한다고 그는 강조했습니다.

그렇지만 어떤 경우에도 고통을 주면 안 된다는 것은 아니라고 주의를 줍니다. 왜냐하면 “큰 수술이 필요한 사람을 관대하게 대하여 환부를 살짝만 도려낸다면 암은 그대로 있고 상처만 입히게 됩니다. 반면, 사정없이 환부를 다 도려내면 종종 환자는 고통을 못 이겨 다 내버리고... 절벽에서 뛰어내릴 수도 있습니다.”

GREAT WISDOM

“The shepherd needs great wisdom and a thousand eyes,” wrote the beloved church father John Chrysostom, “to examine the soul’s condition from every angle.” Chrysostom wrote these words as part of a discussion on the complexity of caring well for others spiritually. Since it’s impossible to force anyone to heal, he emphasized, reaching others’ hearts requires great empathy and compassion.

But that doesn’t mean never causing pain, Chrysostom cautioned, because “if you behave too leniently to one who needs deep surgery, and do not make a deep incision in one who requires it, you mutilate yet miss the cancer. But if you make the needed incision without mercy, often the patient, in despair at his sufferings, throws all aside . . . and promptly throws himself over a cliff.”

There’s a similar complexity in how Jude describes responding to those led astray by false teachers, whose behavior he describes starkly (1:12–13, 18–19) . Yet when Jude turns to how to respond to such grave threats, he doesn’t suggest reacting with harsh anger.

Instead, he taught that believers should respond to threats by rooting themselves even more deeply in God’s love (VV. 20–21) . For it’s only when we’re deeply anchored in God’s unchanging love that we can find the wisdom to help others with appropriate urgency, humility, and compassion (VV. 22–23) —the way most likely to help them find healing and rest in God’s boundless love. God of love, when I’m faced with evil and hate, help me not to respond in kind but anchor myself in Your love.

Why is it crucial to “[build yourself] up . . . in the Holy Spirit” (V. 20) before you respond to perceived threats? What examples have you seen of great wisdom and compassion used in helping someone in great pain?

하나님의 오른손

우리 집의 나이든 개 윌슨을 도와 잔디밭으로 내놓다가 더 어린 개 코치의 목줄을 잠시 놓쳤습니다. 허리를 구부려 목줄을 다시 잡았는데, 그 녀석이 토끼를 발견하고는 쏜살같이 쫓아가는 바람에 내 오른손에 잡혀 있는 목줄을 잡아채면서 내 약지가 뒤틀렸습니다. 나는 잔디밭에 쓰러지면서 고통스럽게 비명을 질렀습니다.

응급실에서 수술이 필요하다는 진단을 받고 돌아오면서 나는 하나님께 도움을 청했습니다. “저는 작가인데 어떻게 타자를 치죠? 또 어떻게 일상을 처리해야 하나요?” 때때로 그러시듯 하나님은 그날도 내가 매일 읽는 성경말씀을 통해 말씀해 주셨습니다. “이는 나 여호와 너의 하나님이 네 오른손을 붙들고 네게 이르기를 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 도우리라 할 것임이니라” (이사야 41:13) . 나는 그 말씀이 나온 맥락을 훑어보았습니다. 그 부분은 이사야가 하나님의 말씀을 전해주었던 유다의 하나님의 백성들이 하나님과 특별한 관계를 누리고 있었음을 보여주고 있었습니다. 하나님은 그분의 오른손으로 상징되는 그분의 의로우심을 통해, 그들과 함께 하시고 힘과 도움을 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다 (10절) . 성경의 다른 곳에서도 하나님의 오른손은 그의 백성들에게 승리를 보장하는 의미로 사용되었습니다 (시편 17:7;98:1).

회복하는 몇 주 동안 나는 구술을 이용한 컴퓨터 원고 작성, 왼손으로 집안 일과 몸단장하기 등을 배우면서 하나님이 힘주시는 것을 경험했습니다. 하나님의 의로운 오른손으로부터 다쳐서 도움이 필요한 우리의 오른손까지, 하나님은 우리와 함께 하시며 도우신다고 약속해 주십니다.

GOD’S RIGHT HAND

I helped my elderly dog, Wilson, out to the grass and in the process, I released the leash of our younger dog, Coach, for just a minute. As I bent to pick up Coach’s lead, he spied a bunny. Off he went, ripping the leash from my right hand and corkscrewing my ring finger in the process. I fell to the grass and cried out in pain.

After returning from urgent care and learning I’d need surgery, I begged God for help. “I’m a writer! How will I type? What about my daily duties?” As God sometimes does, He spoke to me from my daily Bible reading. “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (ISAIAH 41:13) . I scanned the context, which indicated that God’s people in Judah, to whom Isaiah was communicating His message, enjoyed a special relationship with Him. He promised His presence, strength, and help through His own righteous standing, symbolized by His right hand (V. 10) . Elsewhere in Scripture, God’s right hand is used to secure victories for His people (PSALM 17:7; 98:1).

During my weeks of recovery, I experienced encouragement from God as I learned to dictate on my computer and trained my left hand in household and grooming functions. From God’s righteous right hand to our broken and needy right hands, God

때맞은 해결

사이먼과 제프리 사이의 상처가 해결이 안 된 채로 몇 년이 지나면서 관계 회복을 위한 사이먼의 노력도 결실을 맺지 못하고 있었습니다. 그러던 중 제프리의 어머니가 돌아가셨다는 소식을 들은 사이먼은 케냐의 “오지”로 가서 제프리 어머니의 장례식에 참석했습니다. 사이먼은 그날의 만남을 이렇게 회상합니다. “모든 일이 어떻게 되어갈지 아무런 기대도 하지 않았습니다. 그런데 장례식이 끝난 후, 우리는 마음을 열고 유익한 대화를 나누었습니다. 우리는 서로를 안아주며 그 순간을 나누면서 함께 기도했고, 다시 만나기로 약속했습니다.” 사이먼과 제프리가 서로 좀 더 일찍 화해할 수 있었다면 그렇게 오랫동안 이어져왔던 고통을 피할 수도 있었을 것입니다.

마태복음 5:21-26에서 예수님이 하신 말씀은 해결되지 않은 인간관계에서 오는 긴장감을 균형 있는 시각으로 볼 수 있게 해줍니다. 그 같이 갈라서게 만드는 분노는 정말 심각한 문제입니다 (22절) . 더 나아가 관계를 올바로 정립하는 것은 하나님을 예배하는 데 있어 꼭 필요한 준비 과정입니다 (23-24절) . “너를 고소하는 사람과... 얼른 화해하도록 하여라” (25절, 새번역) 는 예수님의 지혜로운 말씀은 우리가 화해를 위해 더 일찍 노력할수록 모두에게 더 좋다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다.

관계에는 위험이 따릅니다. 그래서 우리의 가정과 직장에서, 교육 현장에서, 그리고 그리스도 안에서 같은 믿음을 나누는 사람들 가운데서도 관계 유지를 위해서는 노력이 필요합니다. 하지만 “평강의 왕” (이사야 9:6) 이신 예수님을 대표하는 자인 우리가 먼저 우리와 해결되지 않은 갈등관계에 있는 사람들에게 적극적으로 우리의 마음과 손을 내밀 수 있기를 바랍니다.

TIMELY RESOLUTION

The unresolved hurt between Simon and Geoffrey had persisted for years, and Simon’s attempts to reenter the relationship had been resisted. Upon hearing the news of the death of Geoffrey’s mother, Simon traveled “up country” in Kenya to attend her funeral service. Simon reflected on their encounter: “I had no expectations at all in terms of how the whole thing would turn out, [but] after the service, we opened up and had a fruitful talk. We hugged, shared the moment, prayed together, and planned to
meet again.” If only Simon and Geoffrey had been able to reconcile earlier, so much ongoing pain could have been avoided.

The words of Jesus in Matthew 5:21–26 help to put unresolved relational tensions in perspective. The anger that can lead to such rifts is a serious matter (V. 22) . Furthermore, getting things in order relationally is a fitting prelude to worshiping God (VV. 23–24) . The wise words of Jesus to “settle matters quickly with your adversary” (V. 25) remind us that the sooner we do what we can to work toward reconciliation the better for all.

Relationships are risky; they demand work—in our families, in the workplace, in educational settings, and among people who share our faith in Christ. But as those who represent Him, the “Prince of Peace” (ISAIAH 9:6) , may we find ourselves going out of
our way to extend our hearts and hands to those with whom we have unresolved conflict. ARTHUR JACKSON

성탄절 아기

씨앗에서 향나무로 자라도록 하신 이가 하나의 배아로 생명을 시작하시는 것을 상상해보십시오. 하늘의 별들을 만드신 이가 자궁안으로 들어가시는 것을, 하늘을 채우시는 이가 오늘날 초음파의 작은 점 같은 존재가 되는 것을 상상해보십시오. 근본 하나님의 본체이신 예수님께서 자신을 비워 아무것도 아닌 것이 되셨습니다 (빌립보서 2:6-7) . 생각만 해도 놀라운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다!

예수님이 평범한 농촌 마을에서 목동과 천사들, 그리고 환한 하늘의 빛 가운데 가축들의 울음소리를 자장가 삼아 태어났던 상황을 상상해보십시오. 그의 키가 자라며 더욱 사랑스러워져 가는 것을 보십시오. 소년 시절에는 어려운 질문들에 대답을 잘해 선생들을 놀라게 했고, 청년이 되어서는 요단강에서 하늘에 계신 아버지에게 승인을 받고, 광야에서 금식과 기도로 씨름하시는 것을 보십시오.

CHRISTMAS CHILD

Imagine the One who made cedars spring from seeds starting life over as an embryo; the One who made the stars submitting Himself to a womb; the One who fills the heavens becoming what would be in our day a mere dot on an ultrasound. Jesus, in
very nature God, making Himself nothing (PHILIPPIANS 2:6–7) . What an astonishing thought!

Imagine the scene as He’s born in a plain peasant village, among shepherds and angels and bright lights in the sky, with the bleating of animals His first lullabies. Watch as He grows in favor and stature: as a youngster, astounding teachers with answers to grand questions; as a young man at the Jordan, getting His Father’s approval from heaven; and in the wilderness, as He wrestles in hunger and prayer.

Watch next as He launches His world-changing mission—healing the sick, touching lepers, forgiving the impure. Watch as He kneels in a garden in anguish and as they arrest Him while His closest friends flee. Watch as He is spat on and nailed to two
wooden posts, the world’s sins on His shoulders. But watch, yes watch, as the stone rolls away, an empty tomb ringing hollow, because He is alive!

Watch as He is lifted to the highest place (V. 9) . Watch as His name fills heaven and earth (VV. 10–11).

평강의 왕

존은 감기가 폐렴으로 진행되어 입원하게 되었습니다. 같은 시기에 그의 어머니도 암 진단을 받고 같은 병원의 위층에 입원하게 되자 존은 어머니와 자신의 건강을 걱정하며 너무 힘들어 했습니다. 그러던 중 성탄 전야에 라디오에서 흘러나오는 캐럴 “거룩한 밤”을 들으면서 하나님의 평강이 그의 가슴 깊이 흘러 넘쳤습니다. 그는 사랑의 구주께서 태어나신 밤을 노래하는 가사를 귀기울여 들었습니다. “온 땅이 주의 나심 기뻐하며 희망의 아침 밝아오도다.” 그 순간, 자신과 어머니에 대한 걱정이 사라졌습니다.

우리에게 나신 “사랑의 구주” 예수님은 이사야가 예언했듯이 “평강의 왕”이십니다 (이사야 9:6) . 예수님은 아기로 이 세상에 오셔서 “죽음의 그림자가 둘린 땅에 사는 자들”에게 빛과 구원을 주시면서 이 예언을 성취하셨습니다 (마태복음 4:16; 이사야 9:2 참조) . 예수님은 그분이 사랑하는 사람들이 환난과 죽음을 맞이할 때조차도 평강을 보여주시고 평강으로 인도해 주십니다.

THE PRINCE OF PEACE

When John’s cold turned into pneumonia, he ended up in the hospital. At the same time, his mother was being treated for cancer a few floors above him, and he felt overwhelmed with worries about her and about his own health. Then on Christmas Eve, when the radio played the carol “O Holy Night,” John was flooded with a deep sense of God’s peace. He listened to the words about it being the night of the dear Savior’s birth: “A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!” In that moment, his worries about himself and his mother vanished.

This “dear Savior” born to us, Jesus, is the “Prince of Peace,” as Isaiah prophesied (ISAIAH 9:6) . Jesus fulfilled this prophecy when He came to earth as a baby, bringing light and salvation to “those living in the land of the shadow of death” (MATTHEW 4:16; SEE ISAIAH 9:2). He embodies and gives peace to those He loves, even when they face hardship and death.

There in the hospital, John experienced the peace that passes all understanding (PHILIPPIANS 4:7) as he pondered the birth of Jesus. This encounter with God strengthened his faith and sense of gratitude as he lay in that sterile room away from his family at Christmas. May we too receive God’s gift of peace and hope.
