그들이 어떻게 알까

태국 북부에 있는 “개더링(모임) 교회”는 교파를 초월한 다국적 교회입니다. 최근 어느 주일에 한국, 가나, 파키스탄, 중국, 방글라데시, 미국, 필리핀, 그리고 다른 나라들에서 온 신도들이 다 함께 한 허름한 호텔의 회의실에 모였습니다. 그들은 “오직 예수”와 “나는 하나님의 자녀” 같은 찬송가를 함께 불렀는데, 그 가사들은 그 상황 때문에 더욱 마음에 깊이 와 닿았습니다.

어느 누구도 예수님이 하신 것처럼 사람들을 함께 모을 수 없습니다. 예수님은 처음부터 그런 분이셨습니다. 초대교회 당시 안디옥에는 18 개의 다른 민족이 모여 살면서, 각 민족은 도시에 그들만의 구역을 만들어 따로 살고 있었습니다. 신자들이 처음 안디옥에 왔을 때에는 “유대인에게만” 예수님의 말씀을 전했습니다 (사도행전 11:19) . 그러나 그것은 교회를 향한 하나님의 계획이 아니었습니다. 곧 다른 신자들이 와서 “그리이스 사람 [이방인]들에게도 주 예수님에 대한 기쁜 소식을 전파하니” “많은 사람들이 주님을 믿게 되었습니다” (20-21절, 현대인의 성경) . 그 도시의 사람들은 예수님이 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 있었던 유대인과 헬라인 사이의 반목을 치유하시는 것을 보았으며, 이 다민족 교회를 “그리스도인” 혹은 “작은 그리스도” (26절) 라고 불러야 한다고 선포했습니다.

민족적, 사회적, 경제적 경계를 넘어 우리와 다른 그들을 껴안는 일은 어려운 일일 수 있습니다. 하지만 이런 어려움은 우리에게 기회가 되기도 합니다. 이 일이 어렵지 않다면 우리가 그렇게 하는데 예수님이 필요하지도 않을 것이며, 우리가 예수님을 따른다는 것을 알아차릴 사람도 별로 없을 것입니다.

HOW THEY’LL KNOW

“The Gathering” in northern Thailand is an interdenominational, international church. On a recent Sunday,believers in Jesus from Korea, Ghana, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, the US, the Philippines, and other countries came together in a humble, thread-worn hotel conference room. They sang “In Christ Alone” and “I Am a Child of God,” lyrics that were especially poign­ ant in that setting.

No one brings people together like Jesus does. He’s been doing it from the start. In the first century, Antioch contained eighteen different ethnic groups, each living in its own part of the city. When believers first came to Antioch, they spread the word about Jesus “only among Jews” (ACTS 11:19) . That wasn’t God’s plan for the church, however. Others soon came who “began to speak to Greeks [gentiles] also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus,” and “a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord” (VV. 20–21) . People in the city noticed that Jesus was healing centuries of animosity between Jews and Greeks, and they declared this multi-ethnic church should be called “Christians,” or “little Christs” (V. 26).

It can be challenging for us to reach across ethnic, social, and economic boundaries to embrace those different from us. But this difficulty is our opportunity. If it wasn’t hard, we wouldn’t need Jesus to do it. And few would notice we’re following Him. MIKE WITTMER

가상 공간에서 함께 하는 것

신종 코로나 바이러스가 지구 전역에 창궐함에 따라 보건 전문가들은 바이러스 확산을 늦추기 위해 사회적 거리두기를 권고했습니다. 많은 국가들이 국민들에게 자가 격리 또는 자택 격리를 요청했습니다. 기업들은 가능하면 직원들이 재택근무를 하도록 했고, 어떤 사람들은 실직으로 인해 경제적인 어려움을 겪었습니다. 다른 사람들처럼 나도 온라인을 통해서 교회 예배와 소그룹 모임에 참여했습니다. 비록 물리적으로는 서로 단절되어 있음에도 불구하고 우리는 한 세계로서 새로운 형태로 함께 모이는 것을 실천하였습니다.

인터넷을 통해서만 유대감을 유지할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 우리는 성령을 통해 그리스도의 몸된 지체로서 서로 연결되어 있습니다. 바울은 오래전에 이 개념을 골로새서에서 설명했습니다. 그가 골로새 교회를 직접 세우지는 않았지만 골로새 교인들과 그들의 믿음에 대해 깊은 관심을 갖고 있었습니다. 바울은 직접 그들과 함께 할 수는 없었지만, “심령으로는 [그들과] 함께 있다” (골로새서 2:5) 고 일깨워 주었습니다.

경제적인 이유, 건강상의 이유, 아니면 다른 이유들로 사랑하는 사람들과 항상 같이 할 수는 없지만 과학기술로 그 간격을 메울 수 있습니다. 그러나 가상 공간에서의 어떤 형태의 만남도 주님의 몸된 교회의 지체로서 “함께하는” 경험 (고린도전서 12:27) 과는 비교가 되지 않습니다. 그렇게 함께할 때마다 우리는 바울처럼 서로의 견고한 믿음을 보면서 기뻐할 수 있고, 기도를 통해 “하나님의 비밀인 그리스도” (골로새서 2:2) 를 온전히 알아가도록 서로 격려할 수 있습니다.

VIRTUAL PRESENCE

As the novel coronavirus marched across the globe, health experts advised increased physical distance between people as a means to slow the spread. Many countries asked their citizens to self-quarantine or shelter in place. Organizations sent employees home to work remotely if they could, while others suffered a financially debilitating loss of employment. Like others, I participated in church and small-group meetings through digital platforms. As a world, we practiced new forms of togetherness despite being physically disconnected.

It isn’t just the internet that lets us maintain a sense of connection. We connect to one another as members of the body of Christ through the Spirit. Paul expressed this notion centuries ago in his letter to the Colossians. Though he hadn’t personally founded their church, he cared deeply for them and their faith. And even though Paul couldn’t be with them in person, he reminded them that he was “present with [them] in spirit” (COLOSSIANS 2:5).

We can’t always be with those we love for financial, health, or other practical reasons, and technology can help fill that gap. Yet any form of virtual connection pales in comparison to the “togetherness” we can experience as fellow members of the body of Christ (1 CORINTHIANS 12:27) . In such moments, we can, like Paul, rejoice in one another’s firmness of faith and, through prayer, encourage each other to fully “know the mystery of God, namely, Christ” (COLOSSIANS 2:2) . 하나님의 나침반

발데마르 세메노프가 제2차 세계 대전 중 증기선 ‘알코아가이드’에서 부기관사로 복무하고 있을 때였습니다. 노스캐롤라이나 해상 300 마일 지점에서 독일 잠수함이 떠올라 그 화물 수송선에 포격을 가하자 포격 당한 배는 불에 타며 침몰하기 시작했습니다. 세메노프는 선원들과 함께 구명보트를 내리고 배의 나침반을 이용해 배송 항로 쪽으로 항해했습니다. 3일 후에 순찰기가 이 구명보트를 발견하여 다음날 미해군 전함 ‘브룸’이 그들을 구조했습니다. 그 나침반 덕에 세메노프와 26 명의 선원들이 구조된 것입니다.

시편 기자는 하나님의 백성들에게 그들은 생명의 나침반, 곧 성경말씀을 가지고 있다는 것을 일깨워 주었습니다. 그는 성경을 하나님을 찾는 사람들에게 생명의 길을 밝혀 주기 위해 빛을 비추는 “등불” (시편 119:105) 에 비유했습니다. 시편 기자는 인생의 혼란스러운 물길에 떠밀려 헤매고 있을 때 하나님께서 성경을 통해 영적 위도와 경도를 알려 주심으로 그를 살리실 수 있음을 알았습니다. 그래서 그는 하나님이 그분의 빛을 보내어 그의 삶을 인도하시고, 거룩한 주님이 계시는 항구로 그를 안전하게 이끌어주시기를 기도했습니다 (43:3).

GOD’S COMPASS

During World War II, Waldemar Semenov was serving as a junior engineer aboard the SS Alcoa Guide when—nearly three hundred miles off the coast of North Carolina—a German submarine surfaced and opened fire on the ship. The ship was hit, caught fire, and began to sink. Semenov and his crew lowered a lifeboat into the water and used the vessel’s compass to sail toward the shipping lanes. After three days, a patrol plane spotted their lifeboat and the USS Broome rescued the men the
next day. Thanks to that compass, Semenov and twenty-six other crewmembers were saved.

The psalmist reminded God’s people that they were equipped with a compass for life—the Bible. He compared Scripture to “a lamp” (PSALM 119:105) that provides light to illuminate the path of life for those pursuing God. When the psalmist was adrift in the chaotic waters of life, he knew God could use Scripture to provide spiritual longitude and latitude and help him survive. Thus, he prayed that God would send out His light to direct him in life and bring him safely to the port of His holy presence (43:3).

As believers in Jesus, when we lose our way, God can guide us by the Holy Spirit and by the direction found in the Scriptures. May God transform our hearts and minds as we read the Bible, study it, and follow its wisdom. MARVIN WILLIAMS

무서워하지 말라

연재 만화 ‘피너츠’에 나오는 라이너스는 그의 파란 안전 담요로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 라이너스는 어디에나 그 담요를 가지고 다니며 마음의 안정을 위해 그것이 필요하다는 것을 부끄럽게 여기지 않습니다. 그의 누나 루시는 그 담요를 유난히 싫어해서 종종 없애려고 합니다. 땅에 묻거나 연을 만들기도 하고, 과학 박람회 프로젝트에도 사용합니다. 라이너스 역시 담요에 덜 의존해야 한다는 것을 알아서 때로는 그냥 놔두기도 하지만 언제나 다시 되찾아옵니다.

영화 ‘찰리 브라운 크리스마스 편’에서 낙담한 찰리 브라운이 묻습니다. “혹시 크리스마스에 대해 알고 있는 사람 없어?” 라이너스는 안전 담요를 손에 들고 무대 중앙으로 걸어오면서 누가복음 2:8-14 말씀을 낭독합니다. 낭송 중에 “무서워하지 말라”는 구절이 나오자, 그는 두려울 때마다 꼭 붙잡았던 담요를 내려놓습니다.

크리스마스에 관한 어떤 것이 우리가 무서워할 필요가 없다는 것을 상기시켜줄까요? 목자들에게 나타난 천사들이 말했습니다. “무서워하지 말라 ... 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨다” (누가복음 2:10-11).

FEAR NOT

Linus, in the Peanuts comic strip, is best known for his blue security blanket. He carries it everywhere and isn’t embarrassed at needing it for comfort. His sister Lucy especially dislikes the blanket and often tries to get rid of it. She buries it, makes it into a kite, and uses it for a science fair project. Linus too knows he should be less dependent on his blanket and lets it go from time to time, always to take it back.

In the movie A Charlie Brown Christmas, when a frustrated Charlie Brown asks, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” Linus, with his security blanket in hand, steps center stage and quotes Luke 2:8–14. In the middle of his recitation, as he says, “Fear not,” he drops his blanket—the thing he clung to when afraid.

What is it about Christmas that reminds us we don’t need to fear? The angels that appeared to the shepherds said, “Do not be afraid . . . a Savior has been born to you” (LUKE 2:10–11).

Jesus is “God with us” (MATTHEW 1:23) . We have His very presence through His Holy Spirit, the true Comforter (JOHN 14:16) , so we don’t need to fear. We can let go of our “security blankets” and trust in Him. ANNE CETAS

기억해달라는 기도

아프리카의 어느 큰 교회에서 목사가 무릎을 꿇고 하나님께 “우리를 기억하소서!”라고 기도했습니다. 목사가 간구하자 교인들도 울면서 “주여, 우리를 기억하소서!”라고 따라 했습니다. 유튜브에서 이 장면을 보면서 나도 눈물을 흘리고 있음을 깨닫고 놀랐습니다. 그 기도는 몇 달 전에 촬영된 것이었습니다. 그 영상을 보면서 어린 시절 우리 가족이 섬기던 교회 목사님이 “주여, 우리를 기억하소서!”라고 똑같이 간구했던 기억이 났습니다.

어릴 때 그 기도를 들으며 나는 하나님이 때때로 우리를 잊으신다고 잘못 생각했었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 모든 것을 아시고 (시편 147:5; 요한1서 3:20) , 항상 우리를 지켜보시며 (시편 33:13-15) , 측량할 수 없을 만큼 우리를 사랑하십니다 (에베소서 3:17-19).

더 나아가서 “기억하다”라는 의미의 히브리 단어인 ‘자카르’에서 볼 수 있듯이, 하나님이 우리를 “기억하실” 때 그분은 우리를 위해 일하십니다. ‘자카르’는 어떤 사람을 위해 행동한다는 의미도 있습니다. 그러므로 하나님이 노아와 “그와 함께 방주에 있는 모든 들짐승과 가축”을 “기억하셨을” 때 “바람을 땅 위에 불게 하셔서 물이 줄어들었습니다” (창세기 8:1) . 하나님이 임신을 못하는 라헬을 “기억하셨을” 때 “그의 소원을 들으시고 그의 태를 여셨으므로 그가 임신하여 아들을 낳았습니다” (30:22-23).

우리를 기억해달라고 하나님께 기도하는 것은 얼마나 대단한 믿음의 간구인지 모릅니다! 어떻게 응답하실지는 하나님께서 결정하실 것이지만, 우리의 겸손한 간구가 하나님을 움직이게 할 것을 알기에 우리는 기도할 수 있습니다.

REMEMBERED IN PRAYER

In the large African church, the pastor fell to his knees, praying to God. “Remember us!” As the pastor pleaded, the crowd responded, crying, “Remember us, Lord!” Watching this moment on YouTube, I was surprised that I shed tears too. The prayer was
recorded months earlier. Yet it recalled childhood times when I heard our family’s pastor make the same plea to God. “Remember us, Lord!”

Hearing that prayer as a child, I’d wrongly assumed that God sometimes forgets about us. But God is all-knowing (PSALM 147:5; 1 JOHN 3:20) , He always sees us (PSALM 33:13–15) , and He loves us beyond measure (EPHESIANS 3:17–19).

Even more, as we see in the Hebrew word zakar, meaning “remember,” when God “remembers” us, He acts for us. Zakar also means to act on a person’s behalf. Thus, when God “remembered” Noah and “all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark,” He then “sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded” (GENESIS 8:1) . When God “remembered” barren Rachel, He “listened to her and enabled her to conceive. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son” (30:22–23).

What a great plea of trust to ask God in prayer to remember us! He’ll decide how He answers. We can pray knowing, however, that our humble request asks God to move. PATRICIA RAYBON

잘 했다!

아들 브라이언이 코치로 있는 학교 풋볼팀이 주 대회 결승전에서 접전 끝에 패했습니다. 상대팀은 지난 2년간 진 적이 없는 팀이었습니다. 나는 브라이언을 위로하기 위해 문자를 보냈는데, “아이들이 애썼어요!” 라는 간결한 답장을 받았습니다.

경기가 끝난 후 어떤 코치도 선수들에게 핀잔을 주지 않았습니다. 누구도 선수들이 경기 중에 했던 실수나 잘못된 판단에 대해 야단치지 않았습니다. 오히려 코치들은 어린 선수들이 칭찬받을 만했던 것에 대해 아낌없이 칭찬했습니다.

같은 맥락에서, 예수님을 믿는 사람들도 주님으로부터 가혹한 비난의 말을 듣지 않는다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 그리스도께서 오셔서 우리가 그 앞에 설 때, 그분은 우리를 부끄럽게 여기지 않으시며 우리가 주님을 따라 살면서 행한 일을 보실 것입니다 (고린도후서 5:10; 에베소서 6:8) . 나는 주님께서 “네가 애썼구나! 잘 했다!”라고 말씀하실 것 같습니다. 바울 사도는 그가 “선한 싸움을 싸웠으며” 하나님께서 맞아주실 것을 기대한다고 증언했습니다 (디모데후서 4:7-8).

WELL DONE!

The school where my son Brian coaches football lost the state title game in a hard-fought battle. Their opponent was undefeated over the past two years. I sent Brian a text to commiserate with him and received a terse reply: “Kids battled!”

No coach shamed the players after the game. No one shouted at them for their mishaps or bad decisions along the way. No, the coaches showered the young players with praise for what could be praised.

Along the same vein, it’s good to know that believers in Jesus will not hear harsh words of condemnation from Him. When Christ comes and we stand before Him, He won’t shame us. He’ll see what we’ve done as we’ve followed Him (2 CORINTHIANS 5:10; EPHESIANS 6:8) . I think He’ll say something like, “You battled! Well done!” The apostle Paul testified that he had “fought the good fight” and looked forward to being welcomed by God (2 TIMOTHY 4:7–8).

Life is a relentless struggle with a fierce, unyielding foe devoted to our destruction. He will resist every effort we make to be like Jesus and to love others. There’ll be a few good wins and some heartbreaking losses—God knows—but there will be no eternal
condemnation for those in Jesus (ROMANS 8:1) . If we stand before Him in the merits of God’s Son, each one will “receive [his] praise” from God (1 CORINTHIANS 4:5). DAVID H. ROPER

아름답게 깨진

우리가 탄 버스는 마침내 고대하던 목적지인 이스라엘의 고고학 발굴지에 도착했습니다. 그곳은 우리가 실제로 발굴 작업을 직접 하게 될 곳이었습니다. 현장 책임자는 우리가 발굴할 모든 것들은 수천 년 동안 그대로 보존되어 온 것이라고 설명했습니다. 깨진 도자기 조각을
발굴하며 우리는 마치 역사를 만지고 있는 듯한 느낌을 받았습니다. 시간이 좀 더 흐른 뒤 우리는 아주 오래 전에 깨진 거대한 꽃병의 조각들을 복원하는 작업대로 안내되었습니다.

BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN

Our bus finally arrived at our much-anticipated destination—an archaeological dig in Israel where we would actually do some excavation work of our own. The site’s director explained that anything we might unearth had been untouched for thousands of
years. Digging up broken shards of pottery, we felt as though we were touching history. After an extended time, we were led to a workstation where those broken pieces—from huge vases shattered long, long ago—were being put back together.

The picture was crystal clear. Those artisans reconstructing centuries-old broken pottery were a beautiful representation of the God who loves to fix broken things. In Psalm 31:12, David wrote, “I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery.” Though no occasion is given for the writing of this psalm, David’s life difficulties often found voice in his laments—just like this one. The song describes him as being broken down by danger, enemies, and despair.

So, where did he turn for help? In verse 16, David cries out to God, “Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.”

The God who was the object of David’s trust is the same One who still fixes broken things today. All He asks is that we call out to Him and trust in His unfailing love. BILL CROWDER

나의 다섯 살 난 혼혈 아들과 함께 아이스크림 가게에 들어가자, 카운터 안쪽에 있던 남자가 나를 슬쩍 보고는 내 아이를 빤히 쳐다보았습니다. “넌 뭐니?”

거친 말투로 물어보는 그의 질문은 내가 주류가 아닌 멕시코계 미국인으로 자라면서 경험했던 너무도 익숙한 분노와 아픔을 불러일으켰습니다. 나는 아들을 가까이 끌어당기면서 가게로 들어서는 흑인 남편 쪽으로 돌아섰습니다. 그 점원은 미간을 찡그리며 아무 말없이 우리의 주문을 받았습니다.

WHAT ARE YOU?

When I walked into the ice cream shop with my five-year-old biracial son, the man behind the counter glanced at me and stared at my child. “What are you?”

His question and harsh tone triggered the all-too-familiar anger and heartache I’d experienced growing up as a Mexican-American who didn’t fit stereotypes. Pulling Xavier closer, I turned toward my Black husband as he entered the store. With eyes narrowed, the store clerk completed our order in silence.

I prayed silently for the man as my son listed the flavors of ice cream he wanted to try. Repenting of my bitterness, I asked God to give me a spirit of forgiveness. With my light-but-not-white complexion, I’d been the target of similar glares accompanying that same question over the years. I’d struggled with insecurities and feelings of worthlessness until I began learning how to embrace my identity as God’s beloved daughter.

The apostle Paul declares that believers in Jesus are “all children of God through faith,” equally valued and beautifully diverse. We’re intimately connected and intentionally designed to work together (GALATIANS 3:26–29) . When God sent His Son to redeem us, we became family through His blood shed on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins (4:4–7) . As God’s image-bearers, our worth cannot be determined by the opinions, expectations, or biases of others. What are we? We’re children of God.

I AM HIS HANDS

Jia Haixia lost his sight in the year 2000. His friend Jia Wenqi lost his arms as a child. But they’ve found a way around their disabilities. “I am his hands and he is my eyes,” Haixia says. Together, they’re transforming their village in China.

Since 2002 the friends have been on a mission to regenerate a wasteland near their home. Each day Haixia climbs on Wenqi’s back to cross a river to the site. Wenqi then “hands” Haixia a shovel with his foot, before Haixia places a pail on a pole between Wenqi’s cheek and shoulder. And as one digs and the other waters, the two plant trees—more than 10,000 so far. “Working together, we don’t feel disabled at all,” Haixia says. “We’re a team.”

The apostle Paul likens the church to a body, each part needing the other to function. If the church were all eyes, there’d be no hearing; if all ears, there’d be no sense of smell (1 CORINTHIANS 12:14–17). “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ ” Paul says (V. 21) . Each of us plays a role in the church based on our spiritual gifts (VV. 7–11, 18) . Like Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi, when we combine our strengths, we can bring change to the world.

무슨 말을 해야 할까요?

중고서점에서 “C.S. 루이스”라 표시된 상자에 들어 있는 책들을 살펴보고 있는데 서점 주인이 다가왔습니다. 구할 수 있는 책들에 대해 이야기를 나누다가, 나는 루이스의 많은 글에 영감을 준 믿음에 그가 관심이 있을지도 모르겠다고 생각했습니다. 나는 주님께서 인도해주시기를 마음속으로 기도했습니다. 그때 C.S. 루이스의 일대기에 관한 내용이 떠올라, 우리는 그의 성품이 어떻게 하나님을 가리키고 있는가에 대해 말하기 시작했습니다. 대화가 끝난 후 나는 잠깐의 기도가 우리의 대화를 영적인 문제로 이끌어 주신 것에 감사했습니다.

WHAT SHOULD I SAY?

When I stopped to browse through a box of books marked “C. S. Lewis” at a used bookshop, the store owner appeared. As we chatted about the available titles, I wondered if he might be interested in the faith that inspired much of Lewis’ writing. I prayed silently for guidance. Information from a biography came to mind, and we began to discuss how C. S. Lewis’ character pointed to God. In the end, I was thankful that a quick prayer had reoriented our conversation to spiritual matters.   

Nehemiah paused to pray before a pivotal moment in a conversation with King Artaxerxes in Persia. The king had asked how he could help Nehemiah, who was distraught over Jerusalem’s destruction. Nehemiah was the king’s servant and therefore in no position to ask for favors, but he needed one—a big one. He wanted to restore Jerusalem. So, he “prayed to the God of heaven” before asking to leave his job so he could reestablish the city (NEHEMIAH 2:4–5) . The king consented and even agreed to help Nehemiah make travel arrangements and procure timber for the project.

The Bible encourages us to pray “on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests” (EPHESIANS 6:18) . This includes moments when we need courage, self-control, or sensitivity. Praying before we speak helps us give God control of our attitude and our words.
