기다린 보람
제임스는 긴 근무 시간과 부당한 상사 때문에 스트레스가 많아 직장을 그만두고 싶었습니다. 그러나 그에게는 갚아야 할 주택융자금과 돌봐야 할 아내와 어린아이가 있었습니다. 그럼에도 그는 퇴사하고 싶은 마음이 간절했지만 아내는 “하나님께서 우리에게 무엇을 주실 지 기다려
봐요.”라고 말했습니다.
여러 달 후에 그들의 기도가 응답되었습니다. 제임스는 그가 좋아하는 일을 하고 또 가족과 더 많은 시간을 보낼 수 있는 새로운 직장을 구했습니다. 그는 나에게 “그 몇 달은 길었지만 하나님의 계획이 하나님의 시간에 펼쳐질 때까지 기다리길 잘했습니다.”라고 말했습니다.
어려움 가운데 하나님의 도움을 기다리는 것은 어렵습니다. 자신이 먼저 해결책을 찾고 싶은 마음이 들 수도 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 바로 그랬습니다. 적들의 위협을 받자 하나님을 의지하는 대신 애굽의 도움을 구했습니다 (이사야 30:2) . 그러나 하나님은 그들이 회개하고 하나님을 신뢰하면 힘과 구원을 얻을 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (15절) . 실제로 “주님께서는 너희에게 은혜를 베푸시려고 기다리신다” (18절, 새번역) 라는 말씀도 하셨습니다.
하나님을 기다리는 데에는 믿음과 인내가 필요합니다. 그러나 마침내 그분의 응답을 보게 되면 기다릴 만한 가치가 있었음을 깨닫게 될 것입니다. “그를 기다리는 자마다 복이 있도다” (18절) . 그리고 더 놀라운 것은 하나님께서 우리가 그분께 나아오기를 기다리고 계신다는 것입니다!

A WORTHWHILE WAIT
Stuck in a stressful job with long hours and an unreasonable boss, James wished he could quit. But he had a mortgage, a wife, and a young child to take care of. He was tempted to resign anyway, but his wife reminded him: “Let’s hang on and see what God will give us.”
Many months later, their prayers were answered. James found a new job that he enjoyed and gave him more time with the family. “Those months were long,” he told me, “but I’m glad I waited for God’s plan to unfold in His time.”
Waiting for God’s help in the midst of trouble is hard; it can be tempting to try to find our own solution first. The Israelites did just that: under threat from their enemies, they sought help from Egypt instead of turning to God (ISAIAH 30:2) . But God told them that if they would repent and put their trust in Him, they would find strength and salvation (V. 15) . In fact, He added, “the Lord longs to be gracious to you” (V. 18).
Waiting for God takes faith and patience. But when we see His answer at the end of it all, we’ll realize it was worth it: “Blessed are all who wait for him!” (V. 18) . And what’s even more amazing? God is waiting for us to come to Him! LESLIE KOH

HEROES, TYRANTS, AND JESUS
Beethoven was angry. He’d intended to name his Third Symphony “The Bonaparte.” In an age of religious and political tyranny, he saw Napoleon as a hero of the people and champion of freedom. But when the French general declared himself emperor,
the celebrated composer changed his mind. Denouncing his former hero as a rascal and tyrant, he rubbed so hard to erase Bonaparte’s name that he left a hole in the original score.
Early believers in Jesus must have been disappointed when their hopes of political reform were dashed. He’d stirred hopes of life without the tyranny of Caesar’s heavy-handed taxes and military presence. Yet, decades later, Rome still ruled the world. Jesus’
messengers were left with fears and weakness. His disciples were marked by immaturity and infighting (1 CORINTHIANS 1:11–12; 3:1–3).
But there was a difference. Paul saw beyond what remained unchanged. His letters began, ended, and overflowed with the name of Christ. Christ resurrected. Christ with a promise to return in power. Christ in judgment of everything and everyone. First and
foremost, however, Paul wanted believers in Jesus to be grounded in the meaning and implications of Him crucified (2:2; 13:1–13).
The love expressed in Jesus’ sacrifice made Him a different kind of leader. As Lord and Savior of the world, His cross changes everything. The name of Jesus will forever be known and praised above every name. MART DEHAAN

CARING FOR THOSE IN NEED
Elvis Summers answered the door to find Smokey, a frail woman who stopped by regularly to ask for empty cans to return for cash. This money was her primary source of income. Elvis got an idea. “Could you show me where you sleep?” he asked.
Smokey led him to a narrow patch of dirt about two feet wide next to a house. Moved by compassion, Summers built her a “tiny house”—a simple shelter that provided space for her to sleep safely. Summers ran with the idea. He started a GoFundMe page
and teamed with local churches to provide land to build more shelters for others who were homeless.
Throughout the Bible, God’s people are reminded to care for those in need. When God spoke through Moses to prepare the Israelites to enter the promised land, He encouraged them to “be openhearted and freely lend [to the poor] whatever they need”
(DEUTERONOMY 15:8) . This passage also noted that “there will always be poor people in the land” (V. 11) . We don’t have to go far to see this is true. As God compassionately called the Israelites “to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites” (V. 11) , we too can find ways to help those in need.
Everyone needs food, shelter, and water. Even if we don’t have much, may God guide us to use what we do have to help others. Whether it’s sharing a sandwich or a warm winter coat, small things can make a big difference! JULIE SCHWAB

강한 원수에게서 구조됨
조지 브흐노비치는 2010년 94세의 나이에 뉴욕 타임스가 “제2차 세계 대전 중 가장 큰 구조 작전의 하나”라 했던 작전의 공로로 동성 훈장을 받았습니다. 세르비아 출신 미국 이민자의 아들로서 미군에 입대한 브흐노비치는 미국 공군이 유고슬라비아에서 추락해 반군의 보호를 받고 있다는 소식을 듣고, 그의 고국으로 돌아가서 조종사들을 찾기 위해 낙하산을 타고 숲으로 들어갔습니다. 그는 군인들을 작은 그룹들로 나누어 세르비아 사람들과 어울리는 방법(세르비아 옷을 입고 세르비아 음식을 먹는 것)을 가르쳤습니다. 그런 다음 여러 달에 걸쳐, 숲 속에 만들어 놓은 비행기 활주로에 대기 중이던 C-47 수송기에 군인들을 한 그룹씩 차례로 인도해 태웠습니다. 브흐노비치는 고무되고 기쁨에 찬 512명의 병사들을 구출했습니다.

RESCUED FROM POWERFUL ENEMIES
In 2010, at the age of ninety-four, George Vujnovich was awarded the bronze star for organizing what the New York Times called “one of the greatest rescue efforts of World War II.” Vujnovich, son of Serbian immigrants to the US, had joined the US Army. When word arrived that downed American airmen were being protected by rebels in Yugoslavia, Vujnovich returned to his family’s homeland, parachuting into the forest to locate the pilots. Dividing the soldiers into small groups, he taught them how to blend in with the Serbs (wearing Serbian clothes and eating Serbian food). Then, over months, he walked each small group out one at a time to C-47 transport planes waiting at a landing strip they’d cut out of the woods. Vujnovich rescued 512 elated, joyful men.
David described the elation of being rescued by God from enemies who’d hemmed him in with no escape. God “reached down from on high and took hold of me,” David said, “he drew me out of deep waters” (2 SAMUEL 22:17) . King Saul, enraged with
jealousy, hounded David, ruthlessly seeking blood. But God had other plans. “He rescued me from my powerful enemy,” David recounted, “from my foes, who were too strong for me” (V. 18).
God rescued David from Saul. He rescued Israel from Egypt. And in Jesus, God came to rescue all of us. Jesus rescues us from sin, evil, and death. He’s greater than every powerful enemy. WINN COLLIER

우리는 기쁨과 기대를 가지고 주일 아침 예배를 위해 모였습니다. 코로나 바이러스 전염병 때문에 공간적으로는 먼 곳에 있었지만 우리는 기쁨으로 개빈과 티아나의 결혼을 축하할 수 있었습니다. 기계를 잘 다루는 이란 친구들이 스페인, 폴란드, 세르비아를 포함해 지리적으로
흩어져 있는 가족과 친구들에게 결혼식을 온라인으로 중계했습니다. 이 기발한 방법으로 공간적인 한계를 극복하고 우리는 결혼 서약의 기쁨을 함께 나눌 수 있었습니다. 성령님은 우리를 연합시키고 기쁨을 주셨습니다.
여러 다국적 회중과 함께 했던 그 주일 아침은 “각 나라와 족속과 백성과 방언”의 사람들이 천국에서 하나님 앞에 설 때의 영광을 미리 맛보는 시간이 되었습니다 (요한계시록 7:9) . 사랑받는 제자 요한은 요한계시록에 기록한 환상에서 이 “허다한 무리”를 보았습니다. 그곳에 모인 사람들은 “찬송과 영광과 지혜와 감사와 존귀와 권능과 힘이 우리 하나님께 세세토록 있을지어다” (12절) 라고 하며 천사들과 장로들과 함께 하나님께 예배할 것입니다.
예수님과 국적을 초월한 신부가 연합하여 결혼을 하는 “어린 양의 혼인잔치” (19:9) 는 예배와 축하의 놀라운 시간이 될 것입니다. 여러 나라에 있는 사람들과 함께 주일예배를 드렸던 그 경험은 우리가 누릴 그날의 잔치를 미리 보여줍니다.
그 즐거운 순간을 바라며 기다리면서 우리는 하나님의 사람들과 더불어 잔치를 베풀고 기쁨을 나누는 것을 실천할 수 있습니다.

A GREAT MULTITUDE
We came together for our Sunday morning church service with joy and anticipation. Although we were spatially distanced because of the coronavirus pandemic, we welcomed the opportunity to celebrate Gavin and Tijana’s wedding. Our technologically gifted Iranian friends broadcast the service to friends and family spread out geographically—including in Spain, Poland, and Serbia. This creative approach helped us overcome the constraints as we rejoiced in the covenant of marriage. God’s Spirit united us and gave us joy.
That Sunday morning with our wonderfully multinational congregation was a small taste of the glory to come when people from “every nation, tribe, people and language” will stand before God in heaven (REVELATION 7:9) . The beloved disciple John glimpsed this “great multitude” in a vision he recounts in the book of Revelation. There those gathered will worship God together along with the angels and elders: “Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever” (V. 12).
The union and marriage of Jesus and His international bride in the “wedding supper of the Lamb” (19:9) will be an amazing time of worship and celebration. Our experience at our Sunday church service with people from many nations points to this celebration
that one day we’ll enjoy.
While we wait in hope for that joyful event, we can embrace the practice of feasting and rejoicing among God’s people. AMY BOUCHER PYE

듀베리 침례교회는 1800년대에 닭다리 하나 때문에 갈라졌습니다. 그에 대해 다양한 이야기가 있지만, 현재 교인의 설명에 따르면 교회 친교 모임에서 두 남자가 마지막 남은 닭다리를 가지고 싸웠기 때문이라고 합니다. 한 남자가 자기가 닭다리를 먹는 것이 하나님의 뜻이라고 하자, 다른 남자가 하나님이 그런 일에 간섭하실 리가 없다며 자기가 먹겠다고 했습니다. 이렇게 화가 치민 두 사람 중 하나가 2킬로미터 떨어진 곳에 제2듀베리침례교회를 세웠습니다. 다행히 두 교회는 그들의 의견 차이를 해결했으며, 지금은 모든 사람이 말도 안되는 엉뚱한 이유로 분열이 일어났다는 것을 인정하고 있습니다.
예수님도 그에 동의하십니다. 돌아가시기 전날 밤 예수님은 제자들을 위해 이렇게 기도하셨습니다. “아버지여, 아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이 그들도 다 하나가 되어... 그들로 온전함을 이루어 하나가 되어... 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 알게 하옵소서” (요한복음 17:21-23) .
바울 사도도 그에 동의합니다. 그는 우리에게 “평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라 몸이 하나요 성령도 한 분” (에베소서 4:3-4) 이라고 권면합니다. 이런 연합은 나누어질 수 없습니다.

STAY TOGETHER
Dewberry Baptist Church split in the 1800s over a chicken leg. Various versions of the story exist, but the account told by a current member was that two men fought over the last drumstick at a church potluck. One man said God wanted him to have it. The other replied God didn’t care, and he really wanted it. The men became so furious that one moved a couple kilometers down the road and started Dewberry Baptist Church #2. Thankfully, the churches have settled their differences, and everyone concedes the reason for their split was ridiculous.
Jesus agrees. The night before His death Jesus prayed for His followers. May they “be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” May they “be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me” (JOHN 17:21–23).
Paul agrees. He urges us to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit” (EPHESIANS 4:3–4) , and these cannot be divided.
We who weep for Christ’s body broken for our sin must not tear apart His body, the church, with our anger, gossip, and cliques. Better to let ourselves be wronged than be guilty of the scandal of church division. Give the other guy the chicken leg—and some

딱 맞는 이름을 고르는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 그런데 세상 역사를 영원히 바꿀 그분에게 완벽히 맞는 이름이 지어졌다면 하나님 말고 누가 생각해 낼 수 있었을까요? 하나님은 이사야 선지자를 통해 아하스 왕에게 그의 믿음을 강하게 하기 위하여 “한 징조”를 구하라고 지시하셨습니다 (이사야 7:10-11). 아하스 왕은 징조를 구하지 않았지만, 하나님은 그에게 한 징조를 보여주시며 “처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이요 그 이름을 임마누엘이라 하리라” (14 절) 고 하셨습니다. 하나님은 그 아이의 이름을 지어주셨고, 그는 절망 속에 있는 사람들에게 희망의 징조가 될 것이었습니다. 그 이름은 그대로 이어져와 마태가 예수님의 탄생 이야기를 쓸 때 그 이름에 새로운 의미를 불어넣었습니다 (마태복음 1:23) . 예수님이 “임마누엘”이 되신 것입니다. 예수님은 단지 하나님을 대변하는 분이 아니라, 육신을 입은 하나님으로서 죄의 절망 속에서 그의

THE PERFECT NAME
On a hot and humid day one August, my wife gave birth to our second son. But he remained nameless as we struggled to settle on a given name. After spending many hours in ice cream shops and taking long car rides, we still couldn’t decide. He was simply “Baby Williams” for three days before finally being named Micah.
Choosing the right name can be a little frustrating. Well, unless you’re God, who came up with the perfect name for the One who would change things forever. Through the prophet Isaiah, God directed King Ahaz to ask Him “for a sign” to strengthen his faith
(ISAIAH 7:10–11) . Though the king refused to ask for a sign, God gave him one anyway: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (V. 14) . God named the child, and He would be a sign of hope to people going through despair. The name stuck and Matthew breathed new meaning into it when he wrote the narrative of Jesus’ birth (MATTHEW 1:23) . Jesus would be “Immanuel.” He wouldn’t just be a representative of God, but He would be God in the flesh, coming to rescue His people from the despair of sin.
God gave us a sign. The sign is a Son. The Son’s name is Immanuel—God with us. It’s a name that reflects His presence and love. Today, He invites us to embrace Immanuel and know that He’s with us. MARVIN WILLIAMS

기꺼이 베푸는 기부자
3세기에 태어난 니콜라스는 자기가 죽고 나서 수 세기 후에 산타클로스로 알려질 것이라고는 상상도 하지 못했습니다. 그는 하나님을 사랑하고 진정으로 사람들을 돌보며, 자기가 가진 것을 기쁜 마음으로 나눠주고 친절을 베푸는 사람으로 알려진 한 남자에 지나지 않았습니다. 전해오는 이야기에 의하면, 극심한 경제적 어려움을 겪고 있는 한 가족의 이야기를 들은 니콜라스가 밤중에 그 집으로 가서 열린 창문으로 금이 든 자루를 던졌는데, 그것이 벽난로 옆에 덥히려고 둔 신발인지 양말 속으로 떨어졌다고 합니다.
니콜라스보다 더 오래 전에 바울 사도는 고린도의 신자들에게 기꺼이 내는 기부자가 되라고 권고했습니다. 그는 예루살렘의 형제자매들이 겪는 극심한 재정적 어려움을 알리며 그들에게 아낌없이 도와줄 것을 권면하였습니다. 바울은 가진 것을 나눠주는 이들에게 오는 유익과 축복을 설명하면서, “적게 심는 자는 적게 거두고 많이 심는 자는 많이 거둔다” (고린도후서 9:6) 고 상기시켜 주었습니다. 그들이 기쁜 마음으로 너그러움을 베푼 결과 그들은 “모든 일에 넉넉하여” (11절) 졌고 하나님이 영광을 받게 되었습니다.

CHEERFUL GIVER
Nicholas, who was born in the third century, had no idea that centuries after his death he would be known as Santa Claus. He was just a man who loved God and genuinely cared for people and who was known for giving cheerfully of his own possessions and doing kind deeds. The story is told that after learning of a family who was in great financial distress, Nicholas came to their home at night and threw a bag of gold through an open window, which landed in a shoe or stocking warming by the fireplace.
Long before Nicholas, the apostle Paul urged the believers in Corinth to be cheerful givers. He wrote to them about the great financial needs of their brothers and sisters in Jerusalem and encouraged them to give generously. Paul explained to them the benefits
and blessings that come to those who give of their possessions. He reminded them that “whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (2 CORINTHIANS 9:6) . As a result of their cheerful generosity, they would be “enriched in every way” (V. 11) , and God would be honored.
Father, would you help us to be cheerful givers not only during this Christmas season but all year long? Thank You for Your incredible generosity in giving us Your “indescribable gift,” Your Son, Jesus (V. 15). ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

ILLUSTRATING SCRIPTURE
Decorative blue and white ceramic tiles commonly found in Dutch households were originally made in the city of Delft. They often depict familiar scenes of the Netherlands: beautiful landscapes, ubiquitous windmills, and people working and playing.
In the nineteenth century, Charles Dickens wrote in his book A Christmas Carol how these tiles were used to illustrate the Scriptures. He described an old fireplace built by a Dutchman paved with these quaint Delft tiles: “There were Cains and Abels, Pharaohs’ daughters; Queens of Sheba, . . . [and] Apostles putting off to sea.” Many households used these tiles as a teaching tool as the family gathered around the warmth of a fire and shared the stories of the Bible. They learned about God’s character—His justice, compassion, and mercy.
The truths of the Bible continue to be relevant today. Psalm 78 encourages us to teach the “hidden lessons from our past—stories we’ve heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us” (VV. 2–3 NLT) . It goes on to instruct us to “tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” and “they in turn [can] tell their children” (VV. 4, 6).
With God’s help, we can find creative and effective ways to illustrate the truths of Scripture to each generation as we strive to give God the full honor and praise He deserves. CINDY HESS KASPER

GENERATION NOW
“Never trust anyone over thirty,” said young environmentalist Jack Weinberg in 1964. His comment stereotyped an entire generation—something Weinberg later regretted. Looking back, he said, “Something I said off the top of my head . . . became completely distorted and misunderstood.”
Have you heard disparaging comments aimed at millennials? Or vice versa? Ill thoughts directed from one generation toward another can cut both ways. Surely there’s a better way.
Although he was an excellent king, Hezekiah showed a lack of concern for another generation. When, as a young man, Hezekiah was struck with a terminal illness (2 KINGS 20:1) , he cried out to God for his life (VV. 2–3) . God gave him fifteen more years (V. 6).
But when Hezekiah received the terrible news that his children would one day be taken captive, the royal tears were conspicuously absent (VV. 16–18) . He thought, “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?” (V. 19) . It may have been that Hezekiah didn’t apply the passion he had for his own well-being to the next generation.
God calls us to a love that dares to cross the lines dividing us. The older generation needs the fresh idealism and creativity of the younger, who in turn can benefit from the wisdom and experience of their predecessors. This is no time for snarky memes and slogans but for thoughtful exchange of ideas. We’re in this together. TIM GUSTAFSON
