소망을 전해줌
엠마는 하나님께서 어떻게 자신이 하나님의 사랑하는 자녀라는 사실을 받아들이게 하셨는지 성경말씀을 엮어가며 설명했습니다. 나는 이 고등학생이 어디서 ‘자신의’ 이야기를 멈추고 어디서 ‘하나님의’ 말씀을 인용하기 시작했는지 거의 구분할 수 없었습니다. 내가 그녀가 걸어 다니는 성경과 같다고 칭찬하자, 엠마는 미간을 찌푸렸습니다. 그녀는 의식적으로 성경 구절을 암송하지 않았습니다. 매일 성경을 읽으면서 그 안에 담긴 지혜가 엠마의 일상 쓰는 어휘의 일부가 되어 버린 것입니다. 그녀는 언제나 함께하시는 하나님 안에서 기뻐하고 다른 사람들과 그분의 진리를 나누도록 허락하신 모든 기회를 즐겼습니다. 그런데 하나님이 다른 사람들에게 영감을 주어 기도하는 마음으로 성경을 읽고 외우고 적용하도록 사용하신 젊은이가 엠마 이전에도 있었습니다.
바울 사도는 청년 디모데에게 지도자로 나설 것을 권면하며 이 젊은이에게 자신감을 심어주었습니다(디모데전서 4:11-16). 바울은 디모데가 어려서부터 성경에 뿌리를 두고 있었음을 알았습니다(디모데후서 3:15). 디모데도 바울처럼 의심하는 자들을 대했지만, 두 사람은 모든 성경은 “하나님의 감동으로 된 것”이라고 믿고 그렇게 살았습니다. 그들은 성경이 “교훈과 책망과 바르게 함과 의로 교육하기에 유익하니 이는 하나님의 사람으로 온전하게 하며 모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게 하려 함이라”(16-17절)는 것을 알았습니다.
우리 마음속에 하나님의 지혜를 간직할 때 하나님의 진리와 사랑이 우리의 대화 속에 자연스럽게 흘러나올 수 있습니다. 우리는 마치 걸어 다니는 성경처럼 어디를 가든지 하나님의 영원한 소망을 전해줄 수 있습니다.

SHARING HOPE
As Emma shared how God helped her embrace her identity as His beloved child, she weaved Scripture into our conversation. I could barely figure out where the high school student stopped speaking her words and began quoting the words of God. When I commended her for being like a walking Bible, her brow furrowed. She hadn’t been intentionally reciting Scripture verses. Through daily reading of the Bible, the wisdom found in it had become a part of Emma’s everyday vocabulary. She rejoiced in God’s constant presence and enjoyed every opportunity He provided to share His truth with others. But Emma isn’t the first young person God has used to inspire others to prayerfully read, memorize, and apply Scripture.
When the apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to step into leadership, he demonstrated confidence in this young man (1 TIMOTHY 4:11–16). Paul acknowledged that Timothy was rooted in Scripture from infancy (2 TIMOTHY 3:15). Like Paul, Timothy faced doubters. Still, both men lived as if they believed all Scripture was “Godbreathed.” They recognized Scripture was “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (VV. 16–17).
When we hide God’s wisdom in our hearts, His truth and love can pour into our conversations naturally. We can be like walking Bibles sharing God’s eternal hope wherever we go. XOCHITL DIXON

진정한 예배자들
마침내 그녀에게 그 교회를 방문할 기회가 생겼습니다. 그녀는 교회 내부 지하의 가장 깊은 곳에 있는 작은 동굴로 갔습니다. 좁은 공간을 가득 채운 촛불과 매달린 전등들이 바닥의 한구석을 비추고 있었습니다. 그곳에는 14개의 꼭짓점이 있는 은색 별이 있었고 대리석 바닥의 솟아오른 부분을 덮고 있었습니다. 여인은 지금 그리스도가 탄생한 지점으로 알려진 베들레헴의 ‘예수 탄생 동굴교회’에 와 있습니다. 그러나 작가인 애니 딜라드는 별로 큰 감동을 받지 못했습니다. 하나님이 그 장소보다 훨씬 더 크다는 사실을 깨달았기 때문입니다.
그렇지만 그런 장소들은 우리 믿음의 역사에서 언제나 아주 큰 의미를 지닙니다. 또다른 그런 장소가 예수님과 우물가의 여인이 대화를 나눌 때 언급된 곳, 여인의 “조상들이 예배했던”(요한복음 4:20) 그리심 산(신명기 11:29 참조) 이라고 불리는 곳입니다. 그곳은 예루살렘이 참된 예배를 드리는 곳이라는 유대인들의 주장에 반해 사마리아인들이 신성하게 여기던 곳입니다(20절). 그러나 예수님은 때가 이르렀다고 선포하시면서 예배는 이제 특별한 장소가 아니라 누구에게 예배하는가에 대한 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. “아버지께 참되게 예배하는 자들은 영과 진리로 예배할 때가 오나니”(23절). 그 여인은 메시아를 믿는 믿음을 분명히 보여줬지만, 자신이 메시아와 말하고 있다는 것을 깨닫지 못했습니다. “그때 예수께서 이르시되 네게 말하는 내가 그라 하시니라”(26절).
하나님은 어떤 산이나 물리적인 공간에 제한을 받지 않으십니다. 하나님은 어디에서나 우리와 함께 계십니다. 우리가 매일 하는 진정한 순례는 “우리 아버지”라고 담대히 말하면서 하나님의 보좌로 가까이 다가가는 것입니다. 하나님은 거기에 계십니다.

TRUE WORSHIPERS
She finally had the chance to visit the church. Inside, in the deepest part of the basement, she reached the small cave or grotto. Candles filled the narrow space and hanging lamps illuminated a corner of the floor. There it was—a fourteen-pointed silver star, covering a raised bit of the marble floor. She was in Bethlehem’s Grotto of the Nativity—the place marking the spot where according to tradition Christ was born. Yet the writer Annie Dillard felt less than impressed, realizing God was much bigger than that spot.
Still, such places have always held great significance in our faith stories. Another such place is mentioned in the conversation between Jesus and the woman at the well—the mountain where her “ancestors worshiped” (JOHN 4:20), referring to Mount Gerizim (SEE DEUTERONOMY 11:29). It was sacred to the Samaritans, who contrasted it to the Jewish insistence that Jerusalem was where true worship occurred (V. 20). However, Jesus declared the time had arrived when worship was no longer specific to a place, but a Person: “the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth” (V. 23). The woman declared her faith in the Messiah, but she didn’t realize she was talking to Him. “Then Jesus declared, ‘I, the one speaking to you—I am he’ ” (V. 26).
God isn’t limited to any mountain or physical space. He’s present with us everywhere. The true pilgrimage we make each day is to approach His throne as we boldly say, “Our Father,” and He is there. JOHN BLASE

2019년 캡 대쉬우드와 그의 다정한 검은색 라브라도 종 반려견 첼라는 (“체”는 죽은 그의 전 반려견을 추모하며, “라”는 대쉬우드가 붙인 “라브라도 천사”의 약칭) 365일 매일 산 정상을 오르는 놀라운 일을 해냈습니다.
대쉬우드에게는 감동적인 얘기가 있습니다. 그는 “나쁜 가정 환경”을 피해 열 여섯 살 때 가출했습니다. 그러나, 그런 과거의 상처들이 그가 다른 데서 치유 받도록 해주었습니다. 그는 말합니다. “우리는 종종 사람들에 실망하면 다른 데 관심을 가집니다. 그렇지요?” 대쉬우드에게는 등산과 그의 검은색 라브라도 반려견이 보여준 무조건적인 사랑이 그 “다른 데”의 큰 부분이었습니다.
나처럼 반려동물들을 깊이 사랑하는 사람들이 그렇게 하는 큰 이유는 반려견이 우리에게 쏟아붓는 무조건적인 사랑, 즉 아주 드문 모습의 사랑 때문입니다. 그러나 나는 그들이 본능적으로 주는 사랑이 다른 종류의 사랑이 보여주는 실패의 사례들보다도 현실을 훨씬 더 크고 깊이 있게 강조해 보여준다고 생각합니다. 마치 우주를 다스리시는 하나님의 흔들림 없는 무한한 사랑처럼 말입니다.
다윗의 많은 기도에서처럼 시편 143편에서도, 그는 철저히 혼자라고 느낄 때 흔들림 없는 “주의 인자한 사랑”(12절)에 대한 믿음으로 계속 소망을 붙듭니다. 그리고 평생 하나님과 동행하는 삶을 살면서, 아침마다 “주님의 변함없는 사랑의 말씀을 듣게”(8절, 새번역) 될 거라는 믿음도 갖게 됩니다.
그에게는 다시 하나님을 의뢰하고, 미지의 길을 갈 때 하나님이 그 길을 인도하시기를 바라는 것 만으로도 충분했습니다(8절).

The Bible in One Year: EZEKIEL 16–17; JAMES 3

LABRADOR ANGEL
In 2019, Cap Dashwood and his sweet black lab companion, Chaela (“Chae” in memory of his lab who died; “la,” Dashwood’s abbreviation for “Labrador angel”), accomplished something remarkable: reaching a mountain summit each day for 365 consecutive days.
Dashwood has a moving story to tell. He left home at sixteen, explaining simply, “Bad family life.” But these past wounds led him to find healing elsewhere. He explains, “Sometimes when you’re disappointed by people, you turn to something else. You know?” For Dashwood, mountain climbing and the unconditional love of his black lab companion has been a big part of that “something else.”
For those of us, like myself, who deeply love our animal companions, a big piece of why we do is the sweet, utterly unconditional love they pour out—a kind of love that’s rare. But I like to think the love they effortlessly give points to a much greater and deeper reality than the failures of others—God’s unshakable, boundless love upholding the universe.
In Psalm 143, as in many of his prayers, it’s only David’s faith in that unshakable, “unfailing love” (V. 12) that tethers him to hope in a time when he feels utterly alone. But a lifetime of walking with God gives him just enough strength to trust that the morning will “bring me word of your unfailing love” (V. 8).
Just enough hope to trust again and to let God lead the way to paths unknown (V. 8). MONICA LA ROSE

공허함을 채워 주시는 주님
심리학자 매들린 레빈은 15세 소녀의 “자해 변장”(자해하는 사람들이 주로 사용하는 긴 소매 티셔츠) 옷이 손을 반쯤 가리고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그 소녀가 소매를 걷어 올리자, 팔뚝에 면도날로 “공허하다”라고 새긴 글을 보고 레빈은 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 레빈은 마음이 아팠지만, 그 십대 소녀가 절실히 필요했던 도움을 받을 수 있어서 감사했습니다.
어떤 면에서 그 십대 소녀는 “공허하다”는 단어를 마음에 새겨 놓은 많은 사람을 대변하고 있습니다. 요한은 예수님이 공허함을 채우고 생명을 “풍성히” 얻게 하려고 오셨다고 기록했습니다(요한복음 10:10). 하나님은 모든 인간의 마음속에 풍성한 삶에 대한 갈망을 갖게 하셨으며, 사람들이 하나님과의 사랑의 관계를 경험하기를 바라십니다. 그러나 하나님은 또한 “도둑”이 사람이나 일들, 또는 환경을 이용하여 그들의 삶을 파괴하려 할 것이라고 경고하셨습니다(1, 10절). 그들이 생명을 준다고 하는 주장들은 모두 위조이며 가짜일 것입니다. 이와 달리 예수님은 참된 것, 곧 “영생”을 주시며, “아무도 [우리를] [예수님] 손에서 빼앗을 자가 없느니라”(28절)고 약속해 주십니다.

HE FILLS THE EMPTY
Psychologist Madeline Levine noticed the fifteen-year-old girl’s “cutter disguise”—a long sleeve T-shirt pulled halfway over her hand commonly used by people who engage in selfharm. When the young girl pulled back her sleeve, Levine was startled to find that the girl had used a razor to carve “empty” on her forearm. She was saddened, but also grateful the teen was open to receiving the serious help she desperately needed.
The teen in some way represents many people who’ve carved “empty” on their hearts. John wrote that Jesus came to fill the empty and to offer life “to the full” (JOHN 10:10). God placed the desire for a full life in every human being, and He longs for people to experience a loving relationship with Him. But He also warned them that the “thief” would use people, things, and circumstances to attempt to ravage their lives (VV. 1, 10). The claims each made to give life would be counterfeit and an imitation. In contrast, Jesus offers what’s true—“eternal life” and the promise that “no one will snatch [us] out of [His] hand” (V. 28).
Only Jesus can fill the empty spaces in our hearts with life. If you’re feeling empty, call out to Him today. And if you’re experiencing serious struggles, seek out godly counsel. Christ alone provides life that’s abundant and full—life full of meaning found in Him. MARVIN WILLIAMS

2006년, 아버지는 기억력, 언어 능력, 신체 제어 능력을 잃어가는 신경 질환 진단을 받았습니다. 2011년부터 침대에 누워 지내는 아버지는 지금 집에서 어머니의 보살핌을 계속 받고 있습니다. 아버지가 아프고 나서부터 어두운 시기가 시작되었습니다. 나는 두려웠습니다. 환자를 돌보는 것에 대해 아무것도 몰랐고, 재정문제와 어머니의 건강이 걱정되었습니다.
예레미야애가 3장 22절의 말씀은 내 마음만큼이나 빛이 희미했던 그 많은 아침에 내가 일어날 수 있도록 도와주었습니다. “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다.” “진멸되다”라는 말의 히브리어는 “완전히 소모되다” 또는 “끝나다”를 의미합니다.
하나님의 큰 사랑은 우리가 계속 나아가고, 일어나 새로운 날을 맞을 수 있게 해 줍니다. 우리의 시련이 감당 못할 만큼 크게 느껴지더라도 하나님의 사랑이 훨씬 더 크기에 우리는 그 시련들 때문에 무너지지 않을 것입니다!
사실 하나님은 우리 가족에게 그분의 신실하고 다정한 모습을 여러 번 보여주셨습니다. 친척과 친구들의 따뜻한 마음, 의사들의 현명한 조언, 재정적인 공급, 그리고 언젠가 아버지가 천국에서 다시 온전하게 될 것이라는 우리 마음속의 일깨움 등에서 나는 하나님의 베푸심을 보았습니다.
만일 당신이 어두운 시간을 보내고 있다면 소망을 잃지 마십시오. 당신이 직면하고 있는 것 때문에 진멸되지 않을 것입니다. 당신을 향한 하나님의 신실하신 사랑과 공급하심에 대한 믿음을 잃지 마십시오.

WHEN YOU CAN’T GO ON
In 2006, my dad was diagnosed with a neurological disease that robbed him of his memory, speech, and control over body movements. He became bedridden in 2011 and continues to be cared for by my mom at home. The beginning of his illness was a dark time. I was fearful: I knew nothing about caring for a sick person, and I was anxious about finances and my mom’s health.
The words of Lamentations 3:22 helped me get up many mornings when the light was as gray as the state of my heart: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed.” The Hebrew word for “consumed” means “to be used up completely” or “to come to an end.”
God’s great love enables us to go on, to get up to face the day. Our trials may feel overwhelming, but we won’t be destroyed by them because God’s love is far greater!
There are many times I can recount when God has shown His faithful, loving ways to my family. I saw His provision in the kindness of relatives and friends, the wise counsel of doctors, financial provision, and the reminder in our hearts that—one day—my dad will be whole again in heaven.
If you’re going through a dark time, don’t lose hope. You will not be consumed by what you face. Keep trusting in God’s faithful love and provision for you. KAREN HUANG

깨어진 삶을 치유하시는 하나님
콜린과 그의 아내 조던은 공예품 가게를 돌아다니며 집에 걸어 놓을 그림을 찾고 있었습니다. 딱 맞는 작품을 찾았다고 생각한 콜린은 아내를 불러 자기가 고른 도자기 작품을 보라고 했습니다. 그 도자기의 오른쪽에 ‘은혜’라는 단어가 새겨져 있었습니다. 그러나 왼쪽에 두 개의 긴 균열이 나 있었습니다. “깨진 거네요!” 조던은 그렇게 말하며 선반에서 깨지지 않은 온전한 것을 찾기 시작했습니다. 그러자 콜린은 이렇게 말했습니다. “아니, 그게 중요한 점이에요. 우리도 깨어졌고, 그러고 나서 은혜가 들어왔어요.” 그들 부부는 그 깨진 것을 구입하기로 했습니다. 계산대에 갔더니 점원이 놀라서 말했습니다. “이런, 깨어졌네요!” “예, 우리도 그래요.” 조던이 속삭였습니다.

GOD HEALS OUR BROKENNESS
Collin and his wife, Jordan, wandered through the craft store, looking for a picture to hang in their home. Collin thought he’d found just the right piece and called Jordan over to see it. On the right side of the ceramic artwork was the word grace. But the left side held two long cracks. “Well, it’s broken!” Jordan said as she started looking for an unbroken one on the shelf. But then Collin said, “No. That’s the point. We’re broken and then grace comes in—period.” They decided to purchase the one with the cracks. When they got to the checkout, the clerk exclaimed, “Oh, no, it’s broken!” “Yes, so are we,” Jordan whispered.
What does it mean to be a “broken” person? Someone defined it this way: A growing awareness that no matter how hard we try, our ability to make life work gets worse instead of better. It’s a recognition of our need for God and His intervention in our lives.
The apostle Paul talked about our brokenness in terms of being “dead in [our] transgressions and sins” (EPHESIANS 2:1). The answer to our need to be forgiven and changed comes in verses 4 and 5: “Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive . . . [It] is by grace [we] have been saved.”

테니는 예수님을 구주로 영접하자 비로소 오랫동안 간절히 원했던 안정을 찾고 인정을 받을 수 있었습니다. 그는 자기를 창조하신 하나님께서 자기를 하나님의 아들로 사랑하고 아끼신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 테니는 마침내 자신이 진정으로 소중하고 인정받고 있다는 확신을 가지고 살 수 있게 되었습니다.
이사야 43:1-4에서 하나님은 그가 택한 백성들에게, 그들을 지으신 하나님이 그의 권능과 사랑으로 그들을 구원하실 거라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 “네가 내 눈에 보배롭고 존귀하다”고 선언하시며, 그들을 사랑 하셨기에 그들을 위해 행하려 하셨습니다(4절).

ACCEPTED AND APPROVED
As a child, Tenny felt insecure. He sought approval from his father, but he never received it. It seemed that whatever he did, whether in school or at home, it was never good enough. Even when he entered adulthood, the insecurity remained. He continually wondered, Am I good enough?
Only when Tenny received Jesus as his Savior did he find the security and approval he’d long yearned for. He learned that God—having created him—loved and cherished him as His son. Tenny finally could live with the confidence that he was truly valued and appreciated.
In Isaiah 43:1–4, God told His chosen people that, having formed them, He would use His power and love to redeem them. “You are precious and honored in my sight,” He proclaimed. He would act on their behalf because He loved them (V. 4).
The value God places on those He loves doesn’t come from anything we do, but from the simple and powerful truth that He’s chosen us to be His own.
These words in Isaiah 43 not only gave Tenny great security, but also empowered him with the confidence to do his best for God in whatever task he was called to do. Today he’s a pastor who does all he can to encourage others with this life-giving truth: we’re accepted and approved in Jesus. May we confidently live out this truth today. LESLIE KOH

우리의 진짜 정체성
남자는 먼저 낚시도구 상자를 골랐습니다. 그는 마을의 작은 낚시점에서 고리, 미끼, 찌, 줄, 추 등을 쇼핑카트에 담았습니다. 마지막으로 살아있는 미끼를 담고 새로운 낚싯대와 릴을 골랐습니다. “전에 낚시해 본 적이 있나요?” 가게 주인이 물었습니다. 없다고 대답하자 주인이 말했습니다. “이것을 추가하는 것이 좋겠네요.” 응급 상자였습니다. 그 남자는 주인 말대로 그것을 샀는데, 정작 그날은 고리와 장비에 손가락이 걸린 것 외에는 아무것도 잡지 못했습니다.
시몬 베드로의 문제는 그런 것이 아니었습니다. 경험 많은 어부인 베드로는 어느 새벽에 깊은 데로 가서 “그물을 내려 고기를 잡으라”(누가복음 5:4)는 예수님의 말씀에 놀랐습니다. 밤새 아무것도 잡지 못했음에도 베드로와 동료들은 그물을 내렸고, “그물이 찢어질 만큼 아주 많은 고기를 잡았습니다.” 실제로 잡은 고기가 너무 많아 그의 배 두 척이 가라앉기 시작했습니다(6절).
이것을 본 시몬 베드로는 “예수의 무릎 아래에 엎드려... 주여 나를 떠나소서 나는 죄인이로소이다”라고 간청했습니다(8절). 그러나 예수님은 베드로의 진짜 정체성을 알고 계셨습니다. 예수님이 그 제자에게 “이제 후로는 네가 사람을 취하리라”고 말씀하시자, 그 말을 들은 베드로는 “모든 것을 버려두고 예수님을 따랐습니다”(10-11절). 우리가 예수님을 따르면 주님은 우리가 누구인지, 그리고 주님의 제자로서 우리가 무슨 일을 위해 부름을 받았는지 가르쳐 주실 것입니다.

OUR TRUE IDENTITY
First, the man selected a tackle box. Standing in his town’s small bait shop, he then filled a shopping cart with hooks, lures, bobbers, line, and weights. Finally, he added live bait and selected a new rod and reel. “Ever fished before?” the shop owner asked. The man said no. “Better add this,” said the owner. It was a first-aid kit. The man agreed and paid, then headed off to a day of not catching a thing—except snags on his fingers from his hooks and gear.
That wasn’t Simon Peter’s problem. An experienced fisherman, he was surprised one dawn when Jesus told him to push his boat into deep water and “let down the nets for a catch” (LUKE 5:4). Despite a long night of catching nothing, Simon and his crew let down their nets and “caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.” In fact, his two boats started to sink from the haul (V. 6).
Seeing this, Simon Peter “fell at Jesus’ knees,” urging Him to “go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (V. 8). Jesus, however, knew Simon’s true identity. He told His disciple, “From now on you will fish for people.” Hearing that, Simon “left everything and followed” Christ (VV. 10–11). When we follow Him, He helps us learn who we are and what we’re called to do as His own. PATRICIA RAYBON

잰더가 엄마와 함께 차로 가다가, 엄마의 팔을 뿌리치고 교회 문 쪽으로 돌아서서 미친 듯이 달려갔습니다. 떠나고 싶지 않았던 것입니다! 엄마는 뒤쫓아가서 집에 가자고 잰더와 애정 어린 승강이를 벌였습니다. 마침내 엄마가 네 살 난 잰더를 다시 품에 안자, 아이는 흐느끼며 엄마의 어깨너머로 교회를 향해 손을 뻗으며 집으로 떠났습니다.
잰더는 단지 교회에서 친구들과 좀 더 놀고 싶어서 그랬을지 모르지만, 그런 아이의 열정은 하나님을 예배하려는 다윗의 열망이 어떠했을지 생생하게 보여줍니다. 다윗은 자신의 평안과 안전을 위해 원수를 물리쳐 달라고 하나님께 간구했을지도 모르지만, 그보다는 평화가 찾아와서 “여호와의 아름다움을 바라보며 성전에서 그분을 사모할”(시편 27:4) 수 있기를 바랐습니다. 그가 진정 마음속으로 바란 것은 어디에 있든지 하나님과 함께 있고 그분의 임재를 즐거워하는 것이었습니다. 이스라엘의 가장 위대한 왕이며 전쟁의 영웅이었던 다윗은 평화로운 시간을 “노래하며 여호와를 찬송하는” 데 쓰고 싶어했습니다 (6절).

LET ME STAY!
As they made their way toward their car, Zander escaped his mother’s arms and made a mad dash back toward the church doors. He didn’t want to leave! His mom ran after him and tried to lovingly wrangle her son so they could depart. When his mother finally scooped four-year-old Zander back into her embrace, he sobbed and reached longingly over her shoulder toward the church as they walked away.
Zander may merely have enjoyed playing with friends at church, but his enthusiasm is a picture of David’s desire to worship God. Though he might have asked God to thwart his enemies for his own comfort and security, David wanted peace to prevail so that he could instead “gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple” (PSALM 27:4). His heart’s desire was to be with God— wherever He was—and to enjoy His presence. Israel’s greatest king and military hero intended to use peacetime to “sing and make music to the Lord” (V. 6).
We can freely worship God anywhere, for He now dwells within us through faith in the person of the Holy Spirit (1 CORINTHIANS 3:16; EPHESIANS 3:17). May we yearn to spend our days in His presence and to gather corporately to worship Him with other believers. In God—not the walls of a building—we find our safety and our greatest joy. 권능과 사랑의 하나님
2020년, 에콰도르의 산가이 화산이 분출했습니다. BBC 방송은 “어두운 화산재 기둥이 12,000 미터 높이까지 다달았다”고 보도했습니다. 약 198,000 에이커(약 800 제곱킬로미터)에 달하는 네 개의 주가 그 분출물 때문에 회색의 화산재와 더러운 그을음으로 뒤덮였습니다. 하늘은 우중충하고 암울하게 변했고 공기는 탁해져 숨쉬기도 힘들었습니다. 펠리시아노 잉가라는 농부는 ‘엘 꼬메르치오’ 신문에 이 끔찍한 광경을 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 이 모든 먼지가 어디서 오는지 알 수 없었고... 캄캄해지는 하늘을 보면서 점점 두려워졌습니다.”
이스라엘 백성들도 시내산 기슭에서 “산 아래에 서니 그 산에 불이 붙어... 어둠과 구름과 흑암이 덮이자”(신명기 4:11) 이와 비슷한 공포를 경험했습니다. 하나님의 목소리가 우레처럼 울리자 사람들은 두려움에 떨었습니다. 두려운 일이었습니다. 살아 계신 하나님을 만나는 무릎이 떨리는 엄청난 경험이었습니다.
“여호와께서... 말씀하시되... (그들은) 그 말소리만 듣고 형상은 보지 못했습니다”(12절). 그들의 뼛속까지 떨리게 한 하나님의 음성은 생명과 희망을 주었습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘에게 십계명을 주시면서 그들과의 언약을 새롭게 하셨습니다. 그 어두운 구름으로부터 나온 음성은 그들을 떨게 했지만, 동시에 집요한 사랑으로 그들을 권면하였습니다(출애굽기 34:6-7).
하나님은 우리가 견줄 수 없는 권능으로 우리를 놀라게 하십니다. 그리고 사랑으로 충만하여 언제나 우리에게 다가오십니다. 강하시며 사랑이 많으신 하나님, 그분이 바로 우리가 간절히 필요로 하는 분입니다.

POWERFUL AND LOVING
In 2020, the Ecuadorian volcano Sangay erupted. The BBC described the “dark ash plume which reached a height of more than 12,000 m.” The discharge covered four provinces (about 198,000 acres) in gray ash and grimy soot. The sky turned dingy and grim, and the air was thick—making it difficult to breathe. Farmer Feliciano Inga described the unnerving scene to El Comercio newspaper: “We didn’t know where all this dust was coming from. . . . We saw the sky go dark and grew afraid.”
The Israelites experienced a similar fear at the base of Mount Sinai, as they “stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire . . . with black clouds and deep darkness” (DEUTERONOMY 4:11). God’s voice thundered, and the people trembled. It was terrifying. It’s an awesome, knee-buckling experience to encounter the living God.
“Then the Lord spoke,” and they “heard the sound of words but saw no form” (V. 12). The voice that rattled their bones provided life and hope. God gave Israel the Ten Commandments and renewed His covenant with them. The voice from the dark cloud caused them to quake, but also wooed and loved them with tenacity (EXODUS 34:6–7).
God is powerful, beyond our reach, even startling. And yet He’s also full of love, always reaching out to us. A God both powerful and loving—this is who we desperately need. WINN COLLIER
