그 어떤 것도 끊을 수 없다

목사였던 프리스의 아버지가 하나님의 부르심을 받아 인도네시아의 한 작은 섬에서 선교사역을 시작했을 때, 가족들은 한때 가축을 키우던 낡은 축사에 살았습니다. 프리스는 가족들이 빗물이 새는 초가지붕 밑에서 찬양을 드리며 크리스마스를 기념하던 일을 기억합니다. 그때 아버지는 그녀에게 이렇게 일깨워주었습니다. “프리스, 단지 가난하다고 해서 하나님이 우리를 사랑하시지 않는 게 아니란다.”

어떤 사람들은 부유하고 건강하며 오래 살면 하나님이 축복하신 삶으로 생각하기도 합니다. 그래서 고난을 겪게 되면 그들이 하나님의 사랑을 잃어버린 것은 아닌지 의문을 갖기도 합니다. 그러나 로마서 8:31-39에서 바울은 환난이나 곤고, 박해, 기근을 포함한 그 어느 것도 우리를 예수님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없다는 점을 상기시켜줍니다(35절). 이것이 진정으로 축복받은 삶의 기초입니다. 하나님은 그분의 아들 예수님을 보내어 우리 죄를 위해 죽게 하심으로 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 보여주셨습니다(32절). 그리스도께서는 죽음에서 부활하여 이제 하나님 아버지의 “오른편에” 앉아 계시며 우리를 위해 간구하십니다(34절).

고통을 받을 때 우리는 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 하신 일이 우리 삶의 근간이 된다고 하는, 위로가 되는 진리를 굳게 붙잡아야 합니다. “사망이나 생명이나... 다른 어떤 피조물이라도”(38-39절), 곧 아무것도 우리를 주님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없습니다. 어떤 상황이거나 어떤 고난에 처해 있든, 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시며 어느 것도 우리를 그분에게서 끊을 수 없다는 것을 되새길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

하늘에 계신 아버지, 제 눈과 마음을 열어 더욱 아버지의 사랑을 이해하게 하시고 아버지의 사랑이 제 삶에 충만하다는 사실을 깨닫도록 도와주소서.

NOTHING CAN SEPARATE

When Pris’ father, a pastor, answered God’s call to pioneer a mission on a small island in Indonesia, Pris’ family found themselves living in a rundown shack once used to house animals. Pris remembers the family celebrating Christmas sitting on the floor and singing praises while rainwater dripped through the thatched roof. But her father reminded her, “Pris, just because we are poor doesn’t mean God doesn’t love us.”

Some may see a life blessed by God as one that’s filled with riches, health, and longevity. So in times of hardship, they may wonder if they’re still loved by Him. But in Romans 8:31–39, Paul reminds us that nothing can separate us from Jesus’ love— including trouble, hardship, persecution, and famine (V. 35). This is the foundation for a truly blessed life: God showed His love for us by sending His Son Jesus to die for our sins (V. 32). Christ rose from death and is now sitting “at the right hand” of the Father, interceding for us (V. 34).

In times of suffering, we can hold fast to the comforting truth that our life is rooted in what Christ has done for us. Nothing—“neither death nor life . . . nor anything else in all creation” (VV. 38–39)—can separate us from His love. Whatever our circumstance, whatever our hardship, may we be reminded that God is with us and that nothing can separate us from Him. YOHANA ANG

Heavenly Father, open my eyes and heart to understand more of Your love, and help me realize that Your love is enough for my life.

하나님의 놀라우신 창조물

아내와 함께 고향의 그랜드 강을 따라 산책하고 있을 때, 봄날의 간단한 야외운동이 특별한 의미를 가지게 되었습니다. 우리는 잔 물결이 이는 물 위에 떠 있는 한 통나무 위에서 친숙한 “친구들”을 발견한 것입니다. 대여섯 마리의 커다란 거북이 햇볕을 쬐고 있었습니다. 아내와 나는 몇 달 동안 보지 못했던 이 파충류들의 멋진 모습을 보고 미소를 지었습니다. 그들이 다시 돌아와서 기뻤고, 하나님의 이 위대하신 창조물을 보면서 우리는 기쁨의 순간을 만끽했습니다.

하나님도 욥을 자연 그대로의 산책으로 인도하신 일이 있습니다(욥기 38장 참조). 곤경에 처해 있던 그 남자는 자신의 상황에 대해 창조주가 주시는 답이 필요했습니다(1절). 하나님과 함께 걸으며 그분의 창조물들을 보면서 욥은 필요했던 격려를 얻을 수 있었습니다.

하나님께서 그가 지으신 세상의 위대한 디자인을 일깨워 주셨을 때, 욥이 얼마나 놀랐을지 상상해보십시오. 욥은 창조주로부터 자연 만물에 대해 직접 설명을 들었습니다. “모퉁이 돌을 누가 놓았느냐 그 때에 새벽 별들이 기뻐 노래하며 천사들이 다 기뻐 소리를 질렀느니라”(6-7절). 욥은 하나님께서 정하신 바다의 한계에 대한 지리적인 지식도 얻게 되었습니다(11절).

창조주께서는 이어서 자신이 창조하신 빛과 그가 만드시는 눈, 만물이 자라도록 주시는 비에 대해서도 알려주셨습니다(19-28절). 심지어 별자리도 하나님께서 우주 공간에 흩뿌리셨다는 것까지 듣게 되었습니다(31-32절).

마침내 욥은 승복했습니다. “주께서는 못하실 일이 없는 줄 압니다”(42:2). 우리가 자연세계를 경험하면서, 지혜롭고 놀라운 창조주 하나님에 대한 경외심을 가질 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

GOD’S AMAZING CREATION

What began as a simple spring nature walk turned into something special as my wife and I trekked along our hometown’s Grand River. We noticed some familiar “friends” on a log in the rippling water—five or six large turtles basking in the sun. Sue and I smiled at the amazing sight of these reptiles, which we hadn’t seen for many months. We were delighted that they were back, and we celebrated a moment of joy in God’s magnificent creation.

God took Job on quite a nature walk (SEE JOB 38). The troubled man needed an answer from his Creator about his situation (V. 1). And what he saw on his journey with God through His creation provided the encouragement he needed.

Imagine Job’s amazement as God reminded him of His grand design of the world. Job got a firsthand explanation of the natural world: “Who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?” (VV. 6–7). He got a geography lesson regarding God’s imposed limitations of the seas (V. 11).

The Creator continued to inform Job about the light He created, snow He produces, and rain He provides to make things grow (VV. 19–28). Job even heard about the constellations from the One who flung them into space (VV. 31–32).

Finally, Job responded, “I know that you can do all things” (42:2). As we experience the natural world, may we stand in awe of our wise and wonderful Creator. DAVE BRANON

기쁜 소식

1941년 히틀러의 지배가 유럽 전역으로 확장되면서, 소설가 존 스타인벡은 전시 활동을 도와 달라는 요청을 받았습니다. 일선에 나가 싸우거나 전장을 방문하라는 것이 아니라, 소설 작품을 써 달라는 것이었습니다. 그래서 나온 책이 악한 정권에 의해 침략을 당하게 되는 평화로운 나라에 관한 소설 ‘달이 지다’입니다. 점령당한 국가들에서 지하 출판되어 비밀리에 배포된 이 소설이 준 메시지는 연합군이 진격해 오고 있으며 독자들이 소설 속의 인물들을 모방함으로써 그들의 자유를 수호하는 것을 도울 수 있다는 것이었습니다. ‘달이 지다’라는 소설을 통해 스타인벡은 나치 통치하에 있는 사람들에게 그들의 해방이 가까웠다는 기쁜 소식을 전해주었습니다.

스타인벡의 소설 속 등장인물들과 마찬가지로, 1세기 때 유대인들도 잔혹한 로마의 통치하에 점령된 사람들이었습니다. 그러나 여러 세기 전부터 하나님은 한 사람의 협력자를 보내 그들을 해방시키고 세상에 평화를 가져오겠다고 약속하셨습니다(이사야 11장). 그 협력자가 도착했을 때 기쁨이 넘쳐났습니다! 바울은 말했습니다. “우리는 하나님께서 조상들에게 하신 그 약속을 여러분에게 기쁜 소식으로 전합니다. 하나님께서 예수를 일으키셔서... 우리에게 그 약속을 이루어주셨습니다”(사도행전 13:32-33, 새번역). 예수님의 부활과 용서로 세상의 회복이 시작되었습니다(38-39절; 로마서 8:21).

그때 이후로 이 이야기는 온 세상에 퍼지면서, 그것을 받아들이는 곳은 어디나 평화와 자유가 함께 전해졌습니다. 예수님은 죽음에서 부활하셨습니다. 죄와 악에서의 해방이 시작된 것입니다. 주님 안에서 우리는 자유롭게 되었습니다!

GOOD NEWS

In 1941, as Hitler’s reign was expanding across Europe, novelist John Steinbeck was asked to help with the war effort. He wasn’t asked to fight or visit troops on the frontline, but to instead write a story. The result was The Moon Is Down, a novel about a peaceful land that gets invaded by an evil regime. Printed on underground presses and secretly distributed throughout occupied countries, the novel sent a message: The Allies were coming, and by imitating the novel’s characters, readers could help secure their freedom. Through The Moon Is Down, Steinbeck brought good news to people under Nazi rule—their liberation was near.

Like the characters in Steinbeck’s story, Jews in the first century were an occupied people under brutal Roman rule. But centuries before, God had promised to send an Ally to liberate them and bring peace to the world (ISAIAH 11). Joy erupted when that Ally arrived! “We tell you the good news,” Paul said. “What God promised our ancestors he has fulfilled for us . . . by raising up Jesus” (ACTS 13:32–33). Through Jesus’ resurrection and offer of forgiveness, the world’s restoration had begun (VV. 38–39; ROMANS 8:21).

Since then, this story has spread throughout the globe, bringing peace and freedom wherever it’s embraced. Jesus has been raised from the dead. Our liberation from sin and evil has begun. In Him we’re free! SHERIDAN VOYSEY

당신은 혼자가 아닙니다

“만나서 아주 반가워요!” “저도요!” “여기 오셔서 너무 기뻐요!” 따뜻하고 반가운 인사가 오고 갔습니다. 캘리포니아주 남부지역의 사역자들이 저녁 프로그램 전에 온라인상에 모여들고 있었습니다. 콜로라도 주에 살면서 연사로 요청받은 나는 사람들이 화상 모임에 모여드는 것을 조용히 지켜보면서, 낯선 사람들과 나의 내성적인 성격 때문에 마치 내가 외부인 같다는 느낌이 들었습니다. 그러다 갑자기 화면이 하나 열리더니 우리 교회 목사님이 나오고, 또 다른 화면이 열리더니 오랜 교회 친구가 그 모임에 참여했습니다. 그 둘을 보니 나는 더 이상 혼자라 느끼지 않게 되었습니다. 하나님이 지원군을 보내주신 듯했습니다.

엘리야가 이세벨과 아합의 분노를 피해 도망친 후 “[선지자 중] 오직 나만 남았다”고 느꼈을 때에도(열왕기상 19:10) 그는 혼자가 아니었습니다. 엘리야는 40일 동안 밤낮으로 황량한 사막을 떠돌다가 호렙산의 동굴에 숨게 되었지만, 하나님은 다시 그를 부르시고 사명을 맡기셨습니다. “너는 네 길을 돌이켜 광야를 통하여 다메섹에 가서 이르거든 하사엘에게 기름을 부어 아람의 왕이 되게 하고 너는 또 님시의 아들 예후에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 왕이 되게 하고 또 아벨므홀라 사밧의 아들 엘리사에게 기름을 부어 너를 대신하여 선지자가 되게 하라”(15-16절).

그리고 하나님은 그에게 이렇게 확신시켜 주셨습니다. “그러나 내가 이스라엘 가운데에 칠천 명을 남기리니 다 바알에게 무릎을 꿇지 아니하고 다 바알에게 입맞추지 아니한 자니라”(18절). 엘리야가 알게 된 것처럼, 하나님을 섬길 때 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다. 하나님께서 도울 자를 보내주셔서 우리는 함께 섬기게 될 것입니다.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE

“So great to see you!” “You, too!” “So glad you’re here!” The greetings were warm and welcoming. Members of a ministry in Southern California gathered online before their evening program. As their speaker, calling in from Colorado, I watched silently as the others gathered on the video call. As an introvert and not knowing anyone, I felt like a social outsider. Then suddenly, a screen opened and there was my pastor. Then another screen opened. A longtime church friend was joining the call, too. Seeing them, I no longer felt alone. God, it seemed, had sent support.

Elijah wasn’t alone either, despite feeling like “the only [prophet] left” after fleeing the wrath of Jezebel and Ahab (1 KINGS 19:10). Journeying through desert wilderness for forty days and forty nights, Elijah hid in a cave on Mount Horeb. But God called him back into service, telling him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet” (VV. 15–16).

God then assured him, “Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him” (V. 18). As Elijah learned, while serving God we don’t serve alone. As God brings help, we’ll serve together. PATRICIA RAYBON

예수님의 참 제자

크리스찬 머스타드가 자신이 소유한 반 고흐의 풍경화를 미술품 수집가 오귀스뜨 펠러렝에게 보여주었을 때, 그는 한 번 흘깃 보고는 진품이 아니라고 했습니다. 머스타드는 그 그림을 다락에 숨겼는데, 그 후 50년 동안 그곳에 그대로 있었습니다. 머스타드가 죽은 뒤 그 그림은 40년이 넘도록 수시로 감정을 받았지만 매번 가짜라고 판명이 났습니다. 그러다가 2012년에 한 전문가가 컴퓨터를 사용하여 그 그림의 캔버스 실 가닥을 분리하여 세어보았더니 반 고흐 그림의 다른 작품과 동일한 캔버스 천에서 잘려 나온 것임을 알아냈습니다. 머스타드는 처음부터 반 고흐의 진품을 소유하고 있었던 것입니다.

당신이 가짜같이 여겨집니까? 당신이 기도나 베푸는 일이나 섬기는 일을 거의 하지 않는다는 것을 사람들이 알아낼까봐 두렵습니까? 당신을 엿보는 시선을 피해 다락에 숨고 싶으십니까?

당신 삶의 빛깔과 윤곽 아래로 더 깊은 곳을 바라보십시오. 당신 마음대로 살다가 돌이켜 예수님을 믿었다면, 이제 예수님과 당신은 같은 캔버스에 속한 것입니다. 예수님의 표현을 빌리자면 “나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지”(요한복음 15:5)인 것입니다. 예수님과 당신은 이음매가 없는 한 몸을 이루고 있습니다.

A TRUE DISCIPLE OF JESUS

When Christian Mustad showed his Van Gogh landscape to art collector Auguste Pellerin, Pellerin took one look and said it wasn’t authentic. Mustad hid the painting in his attic, where it remained for fifty years. Mustad died, and the painting was evaluated off and on over the next four decades. Each time it was determined to be a fake—until 2012, when an expert used a computer to count the thread separations in the painting’s canvas. He discovered it had been cut from the same canvas as another work of Van Gogh. Mustad had owned a real Van Gogh all along.

Do you feel like a fake? Do you fear that if people examined you, they’d see how little you pray, give, and serve? Are you tempted to hide in the attic, away from prying eyes?

Look deeper, beneath the colors and contours of your life. If you’ve turned from your own ways and put your faith in Jesus, then you and He belong to the same canvas. To use Jesus’ picture, “I am the vine; you are the branches” (JOHN 15:5). Jesus and you form a seamless whole.

Resting in Jesus makes you a true disciple of His. It’s also the only way to improve your picture. He said, “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (V. 5). MIKE WITTMER

하나님을 찬양하라

우리는 제자 모임이 진행되는 일주일 내내 머리 위로 내리쬐는 미국 중서부 여름의 열기와 습기를 견뎌야 했지만, 마지막 날에 불어온 시원한 바람에 환호할 수 있었습니다. 무더운 날씨의 변화와 하나님께서 하신 놀라운 일에 감사하며, 수백 명의 사람들이 목소리 높여 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 많은 사람들이 마음과 영과 몸과 정신을 다해 하나님 앞에서 전심으로 찬양하면서 해방감을 느꼈습니다. 수십 년이 지난 지금도 그때를 돌아보면 하나님을 찬양할 때 가졌던 순수한 감격과 기쁨을 다시 생각하게 됩니다.

다윗 왕은 어떻게 하는 것이 하나님을 전심으로 경배하는지 잘 알았습니다. 하나님의 임재를 상징하는 언약궤가 예루살렘으로 들어올 때 그는 춤추고 뛰놀며 기뻐했습니다(열왕기상 15:29). 비록 그의 아내 미갈이 그의 자유분방한 모습을 보고 “마음으로 업신여겼지만”(29절), 다윗은 아내의 비난에도 아랑곳하지 않고 유일하신 참 하나님을 향한 경배를 멈추지 않았습니다. 비록 품위가 없어 보여도, 그는 한 나라를 이끌도록 자신을 선택해 주신 하나님께 감사하고 싶었던 것입니다(사무엘하 6:21-22).

SING PRAISE TO GOD

The heat and humidity of the Midwestern summer closed in on us all week at the discipleship conference, but on the last day we welcomed a front of cooler air. Giving thanks for the break in weather and the amazing work God had done, hundreds joined voices to worship God. Many felt liberated to sing wholeheartedly before God, offering hearts, souls, bodies, and minds to Him. As I think back to that day decades later, I’m reminded of the pure wonder and joy of praising God.

King David knew how to wholeheartedly worship God. He rejoiced when the ark of the covenant, which signified God’s presence, was placed in Jerusalem—by dancing, leaping, and celebrating (1 CHRONICLES 15:29). Even though his wife Michal observed his abandon and “despised him in her heart” (V. 29), David didn’t let her criticism stop him from worshiping the one true God. Even if he appeared undignified, he wanted to give thanks to God for choosing him to lead the nation (SEE 2 SAMUEL 6:21–22).

David “appointed Asaph and his associates to give praise to the Lord in this manner: Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. 예수 이름표

“아들아, 너에게 줄 게 별로 없지만, 내가 물려준 훌륭한 이름을 욕되게 하진 말아 다오.” 이 말은 대학에 가기 위해 집을 떠나는 아들 제롬에게 쟈니 베티스가 해주었던 지혜롭고 무게 있는 한마디였습니다. 제롬은 미식축구 명예의 전당에 자신의 이름을 올리는 기념식에서 아버지의 이 말을 인용했습니다. 제롬이 일생 동안 품었던 이 지혜로운 말은 그의 삶에 커다란 영향을 미쳤고, 그날 기념식 연설 마지막을 그의 아들에게 그와 비슷한 말을 함으로써 마무리했습니다. “아들아, 내가 너에게 줄 수 있는 것 중 우리의 좋은 이름보다 더 중요한 것이 별로 없구나.”

THE JESUS LABEL

“Son, I don’t have much to give you. But I do have a good name, so don’t mess it up.” Those wise, weighty words were uttered by Johnnie Bettis as his son Jerome left home for college. Jerome quoted his father in his American Professional Football Hall of Fame acceptance speech. These sage words that Jerome has carried with him throughout his life have been so influential that he closed his riveting speech with similar words to his own son. “Son, there’s not much that I can give you that’s more important than our good name.”

A good name is vital for believers in Jesus. Paul’s words in Colossians 3:12–17 remind us who it is that we represent (V. 17). Character is like the clothing that we wear; and this passage puts the “Jesus label” of clothing on display: “As God’s chosen people . . . clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another. . . . And over all these virtues put on love” (VV. 12–14). These aren’t just our “Sunday clothes.” We’re to wear them everywhere, all the time, as God works in us to reflect Him. When our lives are characterized by these qualities, we demonstrate that we have His name.

May we prayerfully and carefully represent Him as He provides what we need. ARTHUR JACKSON

슬픔에 관한 용어집

휴와 디디가 그들의 유일한 자녀를 하늘나라로 보낸 후, 자신들을 어떻게 불러야 할지 몰라 고민했습니다. 영어에는 자식을 잃은 부모를 지칭하는 단어가 없기 때문입니다. 남편을 잃은 아내는 미망인, 아내를 잃은 남편은 홀아비, 부모를 모두 잃은 아이는 고아라고 부릅니다. 그러나 깊은 상처의 공허함을 지닌 아이를 잃은 부모는 따로 부르는 말이 없습니다.

유산. 영아의 갑작스러운 죽음. 자살. 질병. 사고. 죽음은 아이를 이 세상에서 빼앗아가면서 남아 있는 부모들에게서 자신을 지칭할 용어마저 빼앗아갑니다.

그러나 하나님은 독생자 예수님이 십자가 위에서 돌아가시며, “아버지 내 영혼을 아버지 손에 부탁하나이다”(누가복음 23:46)라고 하나님을 부르신 것과 같은 통렬한 슬픔을 잘 이해하십니다. 하나님은 예수님이 이 세상에 태어나시기 전에도 아버지이셨고, 마지막 숨을 내쉴 때에도 아버지이셨으며, 그분의 아들이 굳어진 몸으로 무덤에 뉠 때에도 여전히 아버지셨습니다. 오늘도 살아 계시는 하나님은 모든 부모에게 아이가 다시 살아날 수 있다는 희망을 주시는 부활하신 예수님의 아버지이십니다.

이 세상을 위해, 그리고 당신과 나를 위해 그분의 아들을 희생시킨 하나님 아버지를 당신은 어떻게 부르십니까? 아버지입니다. 여전히 아버지이십니다. 슬픔에 관한 용어집에서 상실의 아픔을 표현할 단어를 찾을 수 없을 때에도, 하나님은 우리의 아버지이시고 우리를 그분의 자녀로 불러 주십니다(요한1서 3:1).

A GLOSSARY FOR GRIEF

When Hugh and DeeDee released their only child to heaven, they struggled with what to call themselves in the aftermath. There is no specific word in the English language to describe a parent who has lost a child. A wife without her husband is a widow. A husband without his wife is a widower. A child bereft of parents is an orphan. A parent whose child has died is an undefined hollow of hurt.

Miscarriage. Sudden infant death. Suicide. Illness. Accident. Death steals a child from this world and then robs the surviving parents of an expressed identity.

Yet God Himself understands such devastating grief as His only Son, Jesus, called to Him while dying on the cross, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (LUKE 23:46). God was Father before Jesus’ earthly birth and remained Father when Jesus released His final breath. God continued as Father when the still body of His Son was laid in a tomb. God lives on today as Father of a risen Son who brings every parent the hope that a child can live again.

What do you call a heavenly Father who sacrifices His Son for the universe? For you and for me? Father. Still, Father. When there are no words in the glossary of grief to describe the pain of loss, God is our Father and calls us His children (1 JOHN 3:1). ELISA MORGAN

무의미한 것에서 즐거움 찾기

“나는 싫증나는 일을 좋아한다”는 이름의 블로그 창시자인 제임스 워드는 2010년에 “싫증 나는 컨퍼런스”라는 경연 대회를 개최 했습니다. 그것은 간과하기 쉬운 보통 사람들의 평범한 하루 동안에 벌어지는 일을 기념하는 행사입니다. 과거에는 연사들이 주로 재채기나 자동판매기가 내는 소리, 1999년도 잉크젯 프린터 같이 별 의미 없는 주제들에 관해 강연했습니다. 워드는 그런 것들이 싫증나는 주제일지는 모르지만, 연사들이 그런 평범한 주제로도 충분히 흥미롭고 의미 있을 뿐 아니라 즐겁기조차 한 이야기로 만들어 갈 수 있으리라고 생각했습니다.

우리가 온통 지루한 일들에 매몰되어 있을 때 날마다 우리 스스로 미니 컨퍼런스를 열어서 지루한 일들에 의미를 부여해 주시는 “[우리] 창조주를 기억”(1절) 하도록 합시다. 우리가 하나님을 기억하고 경배할 때, 일상적인 것에서 경이로움을, 평범한 것에서 감사를, 삶의 무의미해 보이는 것에서 즐거움을 찾을 수 있을 것입니다.

FINDING JOY IN THE MEANINGLESS

In 2010, James Ward, the creator of the blog “I like Boring Things,” launched a conference called the “Boring Conference.” It’s a oneday celebration of the mundane, the ordinary, and the overlooked. In the past, speakers have addressed seemingly meaningless topics like sneezing, sounds that vending machines make, and inkjet printers of 1999. Ward knows the topics may be boring, but the speakers can take a mundane subject and make it interesting, meaningful, and even joyful.

Several millennia ago, Solomon, the wisest of kings, launched his own search for joy in the meaningless and mundane. He pursued work, bought flocks, built wealth, acquired singers, and constructed buildings (ECCLESIASTES 2:4–9). Some of these pursuits were honorable and some were not. Ultimately, in his pursuit of meaning, the king found nothing but boredom (V. 11). Solomon maintained a worldview that didn’t press beyond the limits of human experience to include God. Ultimately, however, he realized that he’d find joy in the mundane only when he remembered and worshiped God (12:1–7).

When we find ourselves in the whirlwind of tedium, let’s launch our own daily mini-conference, as we “remember [our] Creator” (V. 1)—the God who fills the mundane with meaning. As we remember and worship Him, we’ll find wonder in the ordinary, gratitude in the mundane, and joy in the seemingly meaningless things of life. MARVIN WILLIAMS

어려운 때

코로나바이러스 감염증의 확산을 막기 위해 테네시 주의 영세업체들이 갑자기 영업을 중단했을 때, 가게 주인들은 종업원들을 어떻게 챙겨주고, 가게 임대료를 어떻게 감당하며, 이 위기를 어떻게 넘기나 걱정이 많았습니다. 그때 내슈빌 근처의 한 교회 목사가 힘들어하는 영세 상인들을 현금으로 도와주는 일을 시작했습니다.

그 목사는 “우리는 누군가가 힘든 날을 지날 때 불황에 대비한 기금을 그냥 깔고 앉아 있을 수만은 없다고 느꼈습니다.”라고 하면서, 주위 다른 교회들도 이 일에 함께 동참해 주기를 권면했습니다.

불황 대비 기금은 정상 운영이 계속되어야 함에도 정상적인 소득이 줄어드는 때를 대비해 따로 모아 둔 자금을 말합니다. 우리는 누구나 자연스럽게 스스로를 먼저 돌아보게 마련이지만, 성경은 항상 자신의 필요를 넘어 다른 이들을 섬기는 길을 찾아 구제를 행하라고 우리에게 권하고 있습니다. 잠언 11장은 이렇게 일깨워주고 있습니다. “흩어 구제하여도 더욱 부하게 되는 일이 있나니” “구제를 좋아하는 자는 풍족하여질 것이요” “남을 윤택하게 하는 자는 자기도 윤택하여지리라”(24-25절).

오늘 당신의 삶에 햇살이 유난히 밝게 비치고 있습니까? 다른 사람의 삶에 폭우가 몰아치고 있지 않은지 둘러보십시오. 하나님의 은혜로 받은 축복을 아낌없이 다른 사람들에게 나누어줄 때 그 복은 몇 배나 크게 불어납니다. 너그럽게 풍성히 구제하는 것은 다른 이들에게 소망을 주고, 상처받은 이들에게 하나님 사랑을 깨우쳐주는 아주 좋은 방법입니다.

RAINY DAYS

When small businesses in Tennessee were abruptly shuttered in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19, shop owners worried about how to care for their employees, how to pay their rent, and how to simply survive the crisis. In response to their concerns, the pastor of a church near Nashville started an initiative to supply cash to struggling business owners.

“We don’t feel like we can sit on a rainy-day fund when somebody else is going through a rainy day,” the pastor explained, as he encouraged other churches in the area to join the effort.

A rainy-day fund is money that’s put aside in case normal income is decreased for a time while regular operations need to continue. While it’s natural for us to look out for ourselves first, Scripture encourages us to always look beyond our own needs, to find ways to serve others, and to practice generosity. Proverbs 11 reminds us, “One person gives freely, yet gains even more,” “a generous person will prosper,” and “whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (VV. 24–25).

Is the sun shining extra bright in your life today? Look around to see if there’s torrential rain in someone else’s world. The blessings God has graciously given you are multiplied when you freely share them with others. Being generous and open-handed is a wonderful way to give hope to others and to remind hurting people that God loves them. CINDY HESS KASPER
