함께 나누는 위로

딸 헤일리가 우리 집에 왔을 때, 딸의 세 살 난 아들 캘럼이 이상한 옷을 입고 있었습니다. ‘긁지 마’라고 불리는 이 옷은 소매에 벙어리장갑이 달린 긴 팔 상의였습니다. 손자 캘럼은 피부가 거칠고 빨갛게 부어오르면서 가려워지는 만성 피부병으로 고생하고 있습니다. “이 ‘긁지 마’ 옷은 캘럼이 피부를 긁어 상처 나지 않게 해 줘요.”라고 딸이 설명했습니다.

일곱 달 후, 딸도 피부가 타듯이 부어올라 가려움 때문에 계속 긁어야만 했습니다. 딸은 “이제야 캘럼이 겪고 있는 일을 이해하게 됐어요.”라고 고백했습니다. “어쩜 나도 ‘긁지 마’를 입어야 할 것 같아요.”

딸에게 일어난 일은 바울이 말한 고린도후서 1:3-5 말씀을 생각나게 해주었습니다. “모든 위로의 하나님이시며 우리의 모든 환난 중에서 우리를 위로하사 우리로 하여금 하나님께 받는 위로로써 모든 환난 중에 있는 자들을 능히 위로하게 하시는 이시로다 그리스도의 고난이 우리에게 넘친 것 같이 우리가 받는 위로도 그리스도로 말미암아 넘치는도다.”

가끔 하나님은 우리가 질병이나 상실, 위기와 같은 곤경의 시기를 지나게 하시면서, 그 겪는 고난을 통해 그리스도께서 십자가에서 우리를 위해 겪으셨던 극심한 고통을 감사할 수 있도록 가르치십니다. 위로와 힘을 얻기 위해 하나님을 의지할 때, 우리는 고난을 겪고 있는 다른 사람들을 위로하고 용기를 줄 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것들로 누구를 위로해줄 수 있을지 생각해 봅시다.

COMFORT SHARED

When my daughter Hayley came to visit me, I saw her threeyear-old son, Callum, wearing a strange piece of clothing. Called a ScratchMeNot, it’s a long-sleeved top with mittens attached to the sleeves. My grandson Callum suffers from chronic eczema, a skin disease that makes his skin itch, making it rough and sore. “The ScratchMeNot prevents Callum from scratching and injuring his skin,” Hayley explained.

Seven months later, Hayley’s skin flared up, and she couldn’t stop scratching. “I now understand what Callum endures,” Hayley confessed to me. “Maybe I should wear a ScratchMeNot!”

Hayley’s situation reminded me of 2 Corinthians 1:3–5, in which Paul says that our God is “the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.”

Sometimes God allows us to go through trying times such as an illness, loss, or crisis. He teaches us through our suffering to appreciate the greatest suffering that Christ went through on our behalf on the cross. In turn, when we rely on Him for comfort and strength, we’re able to comfort and encourage others in their suffering. Let’s reflect on whom we can extend comfort because of what God has brought us through. GOH BEE LEE

예수님을 알리려고 다른 사람에게 다가가기

십 년 전 그들은 예수라는 이름을 몰랐습니다. 필리핀 민다나오 산에서 숨겨진 채 사는 반와온 종족은 바깥세상과 거의 교류가 없었습니다. 물품을 구하러 가는 길도 거친 지형을 힘들게 올라야 하기 때문에 이틀이 걸릴 정도입니다. 세상도 그들을 전혀 주목하지 않았습니다.

그때 한 선교팀이 그들에게 다가가, 반와온 사람들을 헬리콥터로 그 지역 안과 밖으로 실어 날랐습니다. 이 일로 이 종족은 필요한 물품이나 중요한 의료 혜택을 쉽게 접할 수 있게 되었고, 보다 큰 세상에 대해 알게 되었습니다. 예수님도 그렇게 해서 그들에게 전해졌습니다. 이제 그들은 정령들에게 노래하는 대신, 부족 전통의 노래를 유일하신 참 하나님을 찬양하는 새로운 노랫말로 바꾸어 부르고 있습니다. 항공 선교가 중요한 연결고리를 만든 것입니다.

예수님은 하나님 아버지께로 돌아가실 때 제자들에게 이렇게 명령 하셨습니다. “너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀라”(마태복음 28:19). 이 명령은 아직도 유효합니다.

미전도 종족 사람들은 우리가 들어보지도 못한 외진 땅에만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 종종 그들은 우리와 함께 살고 있습니다. 반와온 종족에게 다가가기 위해 창의성과 풍부한 자원이 필요했던 것처럼, 우리 지역사회 안에 있는 장벽을 넘기 위해 우리도 창의적으로 접근해야 합니다. 그 일은 전혀 고려하지도 않았던 “다가가기 어려운” 사람들, 바로 당신의 이웃 중 누군가를 포함하는 일일 수도 있습니다. 그들에게 다가가 예수님을 전하기 위해 하나님이 당신을 어떻게 사용하실까요?

REACHING OTHERS FOR JESUS

A decade ago, they didn’t know the name of Jesus. Hidden in the mountains of Mindanao in the Philippines, the Banwaon people had little contact with the outside world. A trip for supplies could take two days, requiring an arduous hike over rugged terrain. The world took no notice of them.

Then a mission group reached out, shuttling people in and out of the region via helicopter. This gained the Banwaon access to needed supplies, crucial medical help, and an awareness of the larger world. It also introduced them to Jesus. Now, instead of singing to the spirits, they chant their traditional tribal songs with new words that praise the one true God. Mission aviation established the critical link.

When Jesus returned to His heavenly Father, He gave His disciples these instructions: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (MATTHEW 28:19). That command still stands.

Unreached people groups aren’t limited to exotic locales we haven’t heard of. Often, they live among us. Reaching the Banwaon people took creativity and resourcefulness, and it inspires us to find creative ways to overcome the barriers in our communities. That might include an “inaccessible” group you haven’t even considered—someone right in your neighborhood. How might God use you to reach others for Jesus? TIM GUSTAFSON

벨을 울려라

다알라는 30회의 힘든 방사선치료를 마친 후 비로소 암에서 자유롭게 되었습니다. 병원의 관례대로 완치를 축하하고 치료의 종결을 뜻하는 “암 완치 종”을 치고 싶어 했던 다알라가 너무 열심히 힘껏 종을 치는 바람에 종에 매여 있던 줄이 끊어져 나갔습니다! 그러자 즐거운 웃음소리가 종소리 여운과 함께 울려 퍼졌습니다.

다알라의 이야기에 나는 미소를 지으며 시편 기자가 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님이 그들 삶 가운데 하신 일들을 송축하라고 할 때 가졌을지도 모를 그 마음을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 하나님이 그들의 적들을 물리치고 이스라엘을 그분의 사랑하는 백성으로 선택하셨기에, 그는 “손뼉을 치며” “하나님께 외치고” “찬양하라”고 그들을 격려하였습니다(시편 47:1, 6, 현대인의 성경).

하나님은 건강이나 금전, 대인 관계 등, 우리가 삶의 여러 문제들로 힘들어할 때 언제나 승리로 이끌어 주시지는 않습니다. 하지만 하나님은 여전히 “그의 거룩한 보좌에 앉아 계시는”(8절) 분이심을 알기에, 하나님은 그런 상황에서도 경배와 찬양을 받으시기에 합당한 분이십니다. 적어도 우리가 이 땅의 삶에서 알 수 있는 방식으로 하나님이 우리를 치유하실 때, 우리는 크게 기뻐해야 할 이유를 얻게 됩니다. 실제로 종을 치지는 않더라도 우리는 다알라가 보여준 것처럼 넘치는 기쁨으로 하나님의 선하심을 찬양할 수 있습니다.

RING THE BELL

After an astounding thirty rounds of radiation treatments, Darla was finally pronounced cancer-free. As part of hospital tradition, she was eager to ring the “cancer-free bell” that marked the end of her treatment and celebrated her clean bill of health. Darla was so enthusiastic and vigorous in her celebratory ringing that the rope actually detached from the bell! Peals of joyous laughter ensued.

Darla’s story brings a smile to my face and gives me a sense of what the psalmist might have envisioned when he invited the Israelites to celebrate God’s work in their lives. The writer encouraged them to “clap [their] hands,” “shout to God,” and “sing praises” because God had routed their enemies and chosen the Israelites as His beloved people (PSALM 47:1, 6).

God doesn’t always grant us victory over our struggles in this life, whether health-related or financial or relational. He’s worthy of our worship and praise in even those circumstances because we can trust that He’s still “seated on his holy throne” (V. 8). When He does bring us to a place of healing—at least in a way we recognize in this earthly life—it’s cause for great celebration. We may not have a physical bell to ring, but we can joyfully celebrate His goodness to us with the same kind of exuberance Darla showed. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

절기의 의미를 되찾아

리사는 절기의 의미를 되찾고 싶었습니다. 눈에 보이는 많은 가을 장식품 들은 때론 섬뜩하고 으스스한 느낌으로, 죽음을 미화라도 하는 듯 보였습니다.

어둠에 맞서 작은 일부터 해보기로 나선 리사는 커다란 호박에 매직펜으로 감사 목록을 쓰기 시작했습니다. 먼저 쓴 것은 “햇살”이었습니다. 이후 그녀의 집을 방문한 사람들도 감사 목록을 썼습니다. “낙서하기”처럼 엉뚱한 목록도 있었고, “따뜻한 집”, “잘 굴러가는 자동차”같이 현실적인 것들도 있었습니다. 반면에 먼저 떠나간 사랑하는 사람의 이름을 쓴 가슴을 울리는 목록도 있었습니다. 감사를 기록한 띠가 호박을 감아 돌기 시작했습니다.

시편 104편은 우리가 지나치기 쉬운 것들을 가지고 하나님께 찬양 드리는 모습을 보여줍니다. “여호와께서 샘을 골짜기에서 솟아나게 하시며”(10절), “그가 가축을 위한 풀과 사람을 위한 채소를 자라게 하신다”(14절)고 시인은 노래합니다. 그리고 어두운 밤조차 멋지고 조화롭다고 표현합니다. “주께서 흑암을 지어 밤이 되게 하시니 삼림의 모든 짐승이 기어나오나이다”(20절). 그러다가 “해가 돋으면... 사람은 나와서 일하며 저녁까지 수고하는도다”(22-23 절)라고 했습니다. 이 모든 것을 바라보며 시편 기자는 “내가 평생토록 여호와께 노래하며 내가 살아있는 동안 내 하나님을 찬양하리로다”(33절)라고 하며 마칩니다.

죽음을 어떻게 다루어야 할지 모르는 이 세상 속에서, 우리의 창조주께 드리는 가장 작은 찬양조차도 세상을 밝히는 소망의 빛이 될 수 있습니다.

REDEEMING THE SEASON

Leisa wanted a way to redeem the season. So many of the autumn decorations she saw seemed to celebrate death, sometimes in gruesome and macabre ways.

Determined to counter the darkness in some small way, Leisa began to write things she was grateful for with a permanent marker on a large pumpkin. “Sunshine” was the first item. Soon visitors were adding to her list. Some entries were whimsical: “doodling,” for instance. Others were practical: “a warm house”; “a working car.” Still others were poignant, like the name of a departed loved one. A chain of gratitude began to wind its way around the pumpkin.

Psalm 104 offers a litany of praise to God for things we easily overlook. “[God] makes springs pour water into the ravines,” sang the poet (V. 10). “He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate” (V. 14). Even the night is seen as good and fitting. “You bring darkness, it becomes night, and all the beasts of the forest prowl” (V. 20). But then, “The sun rises . . . . People go out to their work, to their labor until evening” (VV. 22–23). For all these things, the psalmist concluded, “I will sing praise to my God as long as I live” (V. 33).

In a world that doesn’t know how to deal with death, even the smallest offering of praise to our Creator can become a shining contrast of hope. - TIM GUSTAFSON

새로운 소명

십대 깡패 두목 케이시와 그 일당은 가정집이나 차를 부수고 들어가거나, 편의점을 털고, 다른 패거리와 싸움을 하곤 했습니다. 마침내 케이시는 체포되어 형을 받았는데, 교도소에서도 그는 “우두머리”가 되어 폭동이 일어났을 때 손으로 만든 칼을 나누어 주었습니다.

그 얼마 후 그는 독방에 수감되었습니다. 케이시는 독방에서 공상을 하던 중, 살면서 겪었던 주요 사건들을 마치 “영화”처럼 다시 보는 경험을 하게 되었고, 십자가에 끌려가 못 박히시는 예수님이 그에게 “이것은 다 너를 위한 일이다”라고 말씀하시는 것을 보았습니다. 케이시는 바닥에 엎드려 눈물을 흘리며 죄를 고백했습니다. 나중에 교도소 소속의 목사에게 이 경험을 이야기하자 그는 예수님에 대해 더 많이 설명해주고 성경책도 주었습니다. 케이시는 “그렇게 내 믿음의 여정이 시작되었다.”라고 말했습니다. 시간이 지나 일반 수용소로 다시 돌아온 그는 그의 믿음 때문에 학대를 받았습니다. 하지만 “다른 재소자들에게 예수님을 전하는 새로운 소명을 받았기” 때문에 그는 마음이 평안했습니다.

A NEW CALLING

Teenage gang leader Casey and his followers broke into homes and cars, robbed convenience stores, and fought other gangs. Eventually, Casey was arrested and sentenced. In prison, he became a “shot caller,” someone who handed out homemade knives during riots.

Sometime later, he was placed in solitary confinement. While daydreaming in his cell, Casey experienced a “movie” of sorts replaying key events of his life—and of Jesus, being led to and nailed to the cross and telling him, “I’m doing this for you.” Casey fell to the floor weeping and confessed his sins. Later, he shared his experience with a chaplain, who explained more about Jesus and gave him a Bible. “That was the start of my journey of faith,” Casey said. Eventually, he was released into the mainline prison population, where he was mistreated for his faith. But he felt at peace, because “[he] had found a new calling: telling other inmates about Jesus.”

In his letter to Timothy, the apostle Paul talks about the power of Christ to change lives: God calls us from lives of wrongdoing to follow and serve Jesus (2 TIMOTHY 1:9). When we receive Him by faith, we desire to be a living witness of Christ’s love. The Holy Spirit enables us to do so, even when suffering, in our quest to share the good news (V. 8). 우리로 말미암아 즐거이 부르시는 하나님

첫 아들이 태어난 지 17개월 만에 딸이 태어났습니다. 딸을 갖게 된 것이 너무 기쁘긴 했지만 아들과는 달리 딸을 키우는 지식이 전혀 없어서 약간 불안하기도 했습니다. 우리는 딸의 이름을 사라라고 지었습니다. 내게 주어진 특권 중 하나가 아내가 쉴 수 있도록 딸을 흔들며 재우는 일이었는데, 딱히 이유는 없었지만 나는 딸을 재우기 위해 “그대는 나의 햇살”이라는 노래를 부르곤 했습니다. 품에 안고 있을 때나, 아기 침대 옆에 서서 계속 노래를 불렀고 그 순간순간이 정말 즐거웠습니다. 이제 20대가 된 딸을 나는 여전히 ‘햇살’이라고 부르고 있습니다.

우리는 흔히 천사들이 노래를 한다고 생각합니다. 하지만 하나님께서 노래하신다고 생각해본 적이 있습니까? 그렇습니다. ‘하나님’도 노래를 부르십니다. 더 나아가 하나님께서 당신 때문에 노래하신다고 생각해본 적이 있습니까? 스바냐는 예루살렘에 전하는 메시지에서 “너의 하나님 여호와” 가 너로 말미암아 기쁨을 이기지 못하시며 “너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라”(3:17)고 분명히 말합니다. 이 메시지는 예루살렘에게 직접 말하는 것이지만, 하나님은 예수님을 구주로 영접한 우리로 말미암아서도 즐거이 부르십니다. 하나님은 어떤 노래를 부르실까요? 성경에 명확히 쓰여있지는 않지만 우리는 그분의 사랑에서 우러나온 그 노래는 참되고, 경건하며, 옳고, 정결하며, 사랑받을 만하며, 칭찬받을 만하다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다(빌립보서 4:8).

GOD SINGS OVER YOU

Seventeen months after our first child—a boy—was born, along came a little girl. I was overjoyed at the thought of having a daughter, but I was also a bit uneasy because while I knew a few things about little boys, this was uncharted territory. We named her Sarah, and one of my privileges was rocking her to sleep so my wife could rest. I’m not sure why, but I started trying to sing her to sleep, and the song of choice was “You Are My Sunshine.” Whether holding her in my arms or standing above her in her crib, I quite literally sang over her, and loved every minute of it. She’s in her twenties now, and I still call her Sunshine.

We usually think about angels singing. But when was the last time you thought about God singing? That’s right—God singing. And furthermore, when was the last time you thought about Him singing over you? Zephaniah is clear in his message to Jerusalem, “The Lord your God” takes great delight in you, so much so that He “rejoice[s] over you with singing” (3:17). Although this message speaks directly to Jerusalem, it’s likely God sings over us—those who have received Jesus as Savior—too! What song does He sing? Well, Scripture’s not clear on that. But the song is born out of His love, so we can trust it’s true and noble and right and pure and lovely and admirable (PHILIPPIANS 4:8). - JOHN BLASE

하나님이 듣고 계실까?

내가 교회의 교인 관리 사역팀을 섬겼을 때 맡았던 일 중의 하나는 예배 중 교인들이 적어낸 기도 요청 카드를 보고 기도하는 것이었습니다. 이모의 건강을 위한 기도, 부부의 재정을 위한 기도, 손자가 하나님을 찾기를 바라는 기도 등이 있었는데, 기도의 결과에 대해서는 거의 들은 바가 없었습니다. 대부분 익명이었기 때문에 하나님이 어떻게 응답하셨는지 알 방법이 없었습니다. 나는 가끔 ‘하나님이 정말 듣고 계실까? 내 기도로 어떤 일이 일어나기는 했을까?’라는 의심이 들기도 했습니다.

일생 동안 많은 사람들이 “하나님이 내 기도를 들으실까?”라는 의문을 갖습니다. 나는 한나가 기도한 것처럼 아기를 갖게 해달라고 간청했지만 오랫동안 응답을 받지 못했습니다. 그리고 아버지가 믿음을 갖게 해달라고 간구했지만 아버지는 어떤 분명한 신앙고백도 없이 돌아가셨습니다.

하나님께서 귀 기울여 들으신 무수한 사례가 수천 년에 걸쳐 기록되어 있습니다. 노예 생활에 시달리는 이스라엘의 신음소리를 들으시고(출애굽기 2:24), 시내산에서 모세를 들으시며(신명기 9:19), 길갈에서 여호수아를 들으시고 (여호수아 10:14), 아이를 간구하는 한나의 기도를 들으시며(사무엘상 1:10-17), 사울로부터 구해달라고 부르짖는 다윗의 간구를 들으셨습니다(사무엘하 22:7).

요한1서 5장 14절 말씀은 우리가 “그의 뜻대로 무엇을 구하면 들으심 이라”고 강조합니다. “듣는다”라는 말의 의미는 들은 것에 기초하여 주의를 기울이고 반응한다는 뜻입니다.

오늘 우리가 하나님 앞에 나아갈 때, 그의 백성의 역사 속에서 하나님이 언제나 그들에게 귀를 기울이셨던 것을 확신할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 하나님은 우리의 간구를 들으십니다.

IS GOD LISTENING?

When I served on my church’s congregational care team, one of my duties was to pray over the requests penciled on pew cards during the services. For an aunt’s health. For a couple’s finances. For a grandson’s discovery of God. Rarely did I hear the results of these prayers. Most were anonymous, and I had no way of knowing how God had responded. I confess that at times I wondered, Was He really listening? Was anything happening as a result of my prayers?

Over our lifetimes, most of us question, “Does God hear me?” I remember my own Hannah-like pleas for a child that went unanswered for years. And there were my pleas that my father find faith, yet he died without any apparent confession.

Etched across the millennia are myriad instances of God’s ear bending to listen: to Israel’s groans under slavery (EXODUS 2:24); to Moses on Mount Sinai (DEUTERONOMY 9:19); to Joshua at Gilgal (JOSHUA 10:14); to Hannah’s prayers for a child (1 SAMUEL 1:10–17); to David crying out for deliverance from Saul (2 SAMUEL 22:7).

First John 5:14 crescendos, “If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” The word for “hears” means to pay attention and to respond on the basis of having heard.

As we go to God today, may we have the confidence of His
listening ear spanning the history of His people. He hears our

고난의 목적

“그러니까 제 잘못이 아닐 수도 있다는 말씀이네요.” 나는 그녀의 이 말을 듣고 매우 놀랐습니다. 나는 그녀가 다니는 교회에 강사로 초청되었고, 그날 아침에 나누었던 내용에 대해 함께 이야기하던 중이었습니다. 그녀는 이렇게 말했습니다. “저에게 만성 질환이 있어서 낫기 위해 기도하고, 금식하고, 죄도 고백하고, 하라는 것은 모두 다 해봤어요. 하지만 병은 여전히 낫지 않아서 다 제 탓이라고 생각했어요.”

나는 그녀의 고백을 듣고 안쓰러웠습니다. 그녀는 자신의 문제를 해결하려고 영적인 “공식”을 받았는데, 그 공식으로 해결이 되지 않자 자신을 책망했던 것입니다. 게다가, 고난에 대한 이같은 정형화된 접근 방식은 수 세대 이전에 이미 잘못되었다는 것이 판명되었습니다.

시대에 뒤떨어진 그 공식을 간단히 말하면, 우리의 고난은 우리가 지은 죄 때문이라는 것입니다. 욥이 그의 가축과 자녀들, 그리고 건강을 비참하게 잃어버렸을 때 친구들은 이 공식을 그에게 적용했습니다. 엘리바스는 욥의 죄를 의심하며 “정직한 사람이 멸망한 일이 있더냐?”(욥기 4:7, 새번역)라고 했고, 빌닷은 욥의 자녀들이 죽은 이유가 그들의 죄 때문이라고 말하기까지 했습니다(8:4). 친구들은 욥에게 닥친 재난의 참된 이유도 모르는 채(1:6- 2:10) 단순한 논리만으로 그를 괴롭혔으며, 그래서 나중에 하나님의 책망을 받았습니다(42:7).

고난은 타락한 이 세상의 삶의 일부분입니다. 우리도 욥처럼 알 수 없는 이유로 고난받을 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리가 견디는 고통 그 이상의 목적을 우리를 위해 갖고 계십니다. 단순한 공식에 빠져 낙심하지 마십시오.

A PURPOSE IN SUFFERING

“So what you’re saying is, it may not be my fault.” The woman’s words took me by surprise. Having been a guest speaker at her church, we were now discussing what I’d shared that morning. “I have a chronic illness,” she explained, “and I have prayed, fasted, confessed my sins, and done everything else I was told to do to be healed. But I’m still sick, so I thought I was to blame.”

I felt sad at the woman’s confession. Having been given a spiritual “formula” to fix her problem, she had blamed herself when the formula hadn’t worked. Even worse, this formulaic approach to suffering was disproved generations ago.

Simply put, this old formula says that if you’re suffering, you must have sinned. When Job tragically lost his livestock, children, and health, his friends used the formula on him. “Who, being innocent, has ever perished?” Eliphaz said, suspecting Job’s guilt (JOB 4:7). Bildad even told Job that his children only died because they had sinned (8:4). Ignorant of the real cause of Job’s calamities (1:6–2:10), they tormented him with simplistic reasons for his pain, later receiving God’s rebuke (42:7).

Suffering is a part of living in a fallen world. Like Job, it can happen for reasons we may never know. But God has a purpose for you that goes beyond the pain you endure. Don’t get discouraged by falling for simplistic formulas. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

따로 세움

“툭툭”으로 알려진 스리랑카의 삼륜 택시는 많은 이들에게 편리함과 즐거움을 주는 교통수단입니다. 수도 콜롬보에 거주하는 로레인은 그 택시들도 전도가 가능한 영역임을 깨달았습니다. 어느 날 툭툭을 탔는데 마침 종교에 관해 이야기하기를 아주 즐겨 하는 한 친절한 기사를 만났습니다. 그녀는 다음 기회에 그 기사에게 복음을 전하겠다고 스스로 다짐했습니다.

로마서는 바울이 “하나님의 복음을 전하기 위하여 따로 세우심을 받았다”(로마서 1:1, 새번역)고 자신을 소개하는 것으로 시작합니다. 헬라어로 “복음”은 ‘에반겔리온’이며 그 뜻은 “좋은 소식”입니다. 바울은 근본적으로 자신의 주된 목표가 하나님의 좋은 소식을 전하는 것이라고 말하고 있었던 것입니다.

좋은 소식이란 무엇입니까? 로마서 1장 3절에서 하나님의 복음은 곧 “그의 아들에 관한 것”이라고 말하고 있습니다. 좋은 소식은 바로 예수님 입니다! 예수님이 우리를 죄와 사망에서 구원하시려고 오셨다는 것을 온 세계에 전하기를 원하시는 바로 그 ‘하나님’이 그분의 소통 수단으로 우리를 선택하셨습니다. 이 얼마나 떨리는 사실인지요!

복음을 전하는 것은 예수님을 믿는 모든 신자들에게 주어진 특권입니다. 우리는 다른 사람들을 이 믿음으로 이끌기 위해 “은혜를 받았습니다”(5-6절). 툭툭에 탑승했을 때든, 혹은 어디에 있든, 하나님은 주변 사람들에게 복음의 기쁜 소식을 전하라고 우리를 따로 세우셨습니다. 우리도 로레인처럼 일상에서 좋은 소식되시는 예수님을 전할 기회를 얻게 되기를 바랍니다.

SET APART

The three-wheeled taxis of Sri Lanka, known as “tuk tuks,” are a convenient and delightful mode of transport for many. Lorraine, a resident of the capital of Colombo, also realized that they’re a mission field. Hopping onto a tuk tuk one day, she found the friendly driver more than happy to engage in conversation about religion. The next time, she told herself, she would talk to the driver about the good news.

The book of Romans starts with Paul declaring himself as “set apart for the gospel of God” (ROMANS 1:1). The Greek word for “gospel” is evangelion, which means “good news.” Paul was essentially saying that his main purpose was to tell God’s good news. What is this good news? Romans 1:3 says that the gospel of God is “regarding his Son.” The good news is Jesus! It’s God who wants to tell the world that Jesus came to save us from sin and death, and He’s chosen us to be His mode of communication. What a humbling fact!

Sharing the good news is a privilege all believers in Jesus have been given. We’ve “received grace” to call others to this faith (VV. 5–6). God has set us apart to carry the exciting news of the gospel to those around us, whether on tuk tuks or wherever we are. May we, like Lorraine, look for opportunities in our daily life to tell others the good news that is Jesus. - ASIRI FERNANDO

테스트

아이들과 함께 14,000피트(약 4.3킬로미터)가 넘는 콜로라도 포티너 산을 처음 오를 때 아이들이 무척 긴장했습니다. ‘아이들이 해낼 수 있을까? 도전할 준비가 된 걸까?’ 등산로를 가다가 막내아들이 멈추어서 좀 더 오래 휴식을 취했습니다. “아빠, 더 이상 못 가겠어요.”라고 아들은 반복해서 말했습니다. 하지만 나는 이 테스트가 분명 아이들에게 유익하리라 생각했고 아이들이 나를 믿어주기를 원했습니다. 더 갈 수 없다고 말했던 아들은 정상까지 1마일(약 1.6킬로미터) 남은 상황에서 새롭게 힘을 내더니 결국 우리보다 빨리 정상에 올랐습니다. 두려움 속에서도 나를 믿었던 아들은 무척 기뻐했습니다.

이삭이 아버지와 함께 산을 오르며 아버지에게 가졌던 믿음은 실로 놀랍습니다. 게다가 아브라함이 아들의 몸 위로 칼을 들며 보여주었던 하나님에 대한 믿음은 나를 더 놀라게 합니다(창세기 22:10). 아브라함은 혼란스럽고 비통했지만 순종했습니다. 다행히 하나님의 사자가 나타나 그를 중단시키며 “그 아이에게 네 손을 대지 말라”고 말했습니다(12절). 하나님은 결코 이삭을 죽일 계획이 없으셨습니다.

이 특별한 사건과 우리의 삶을 조심스럽게 연결해 볼 때, 우리는 “하나님 이 아브라함을 시험하시려고”(1절)라는 첫 구절을 주목해 보아야 합니다. 아브라함은 시험을 통해 자신이 하나님을 얼마나 신뢰하는지를 알게 되었으며, 하나님의 사랑의 마음과 모든 것을 예비하심도 알게 되었습니다.

우리는 혼란과 어둠, 그리고 시험을 통해 하나님과 우리 자신에 대한 진실을 알게 됩니다. 그리고 시험을 당하는 것은 그분에 대한 더 깊은 신뢰로 이어진다는 것도 알게 됩니다.

THE TESTING

The first time I took my sons to hike a Colorado Fourteener—a mountain with an elevation of a least 14,000 feet—they were nervous. Could they make it? Were they up to the challenge? My youngest stopped on the trail for extended breaks. “Dad, I can’t go any more,” he said repeatedly. But I believed this test would be good for them, and I wanted them to trust me. A mile from the peak, my son who’d insisted he could go no further caught his second wind and beat us to the summit. He was so glad he trusted me, even amid his fears.

I marvel at the trust Isaac had in his father as they climbed their mountain. Far more, I’m undone by the trust Abraham had in God as he raised his knife over his son (GENESIS 22:10). Even with his confused and wrenching heart, Abraham obeyed. Mercifully, an angel stopped him. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” God’s messenger declared (V. 12). God never intended for Isaac to die.

As we draw parallels from this unique story to our own with caution, it’s crucial to note the opening line: “God tested Abraham” (V. 1). Through his test, Abraham learned how much he trusted God. He discovered His loving heart and profound provision.

In our confusion, darkness, and testing, we learn truths about ourselves and about God. And we may even find that our testing leads to a deeper trust in Him. - WINN COLLIER
