말하고 믿고 느껴라

프레드릭 뷰크너는 그의 충격적인 회고록 ‘비밀을 말하다’에서 이렇게 말합니다. “말하지 말고, 믿지 말고, 느끼지 말라는 것이 우리 가족이 살아온 법이었으며, 그것을 어긴 사람은 화를 면치 못했다.” 뷰크너는 그가 “각종 이유로 몰락하게 된 가족들의 불문율”이라고 부르는 이것에 대한 자신의 경험을 말하고 있습니다. 뷰크너는 자기 집안에서도 그 “법”의 영향으로 아버지의 자살에 대해 말하거나 슬퍼할 수조차 없었고, 누구와도 아픔을 나누지 못했습니다.

당신도 이와 비슷한 경험이 있습니까? 우리 중 많은 이들은 상처받은 것을 솔직히 말하지 못하고 침묵을 요구받는 왜곡된 사랑 가운데 사는 것을 배워왔습니다. 그런 종류의 “사랑”은 다만 두려움을 이용하여 통제권을 지키려는 것으로, 일종의 노예생활과도 같은 것입니다.

우리는 예수님이 우리를 부르신 사랑이 우리가 잃어버릴까 봐 늘 두려워하는 사랑, 곧 우리가 종종 경험하는 그런 조건부 사랑과 얼마나 다른지 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 바울 사도가 설명하는 대로, 우리는 그리스도의 사랑을 통해 두려움 없이 산다는 것이 어떤 것인지를 완전히 이해하게 되며(로마서 8:15), 우리가 깊이, 진실로, 무조건적으로 사랑받는 존재라는 것을 깨닫게 될 때 얻을 수 있는 영광스러운 자유(21절)를 비로소 이해하게 됩니다. 우리는 다시 한번 자유롭게 말하고, 믿고, 느낄 수 있으며, 그럼으로써 두려움 없이 사는 것이 어떤 의미인지를 알게 됩니다.

TALK, TRUST, FEEL

“Don’t talk, don’t trust, don’t feel was the law we lived by,” says Frederick Buechner in his powerful memoir Telling Secrets, “and woe to the one who broke it.” Buechner is describing his experience of what he calls the “unwritten law of families who for one reason or another have gone out of whack.” In his own family, that “law” meant Buechner was not allowed to talk about or grieve his father’s suicide, leaving him with no one he could trust with his pain.

Can you relate? Many of us in one way or another have learned to live with a warped version of love, one that demands dishonesty or silence about what’s harmed us. That kind of “love” relies on fear for control—and is a kind of slavery.

We can’t afford to forget just how different Jesus’ invitation to love is from the kind of conditional love we often experience— a kind of love we’re always afraid we could lose. As Paul explains, through Christ’s love we can finally understand what it means to not live in fear (ROMANS 8:15) and start to understand the kind of glorious freedom (V. 21) that’s possible when we know we’re deeply, truly, and unconditionally loved. We’re free to talk, to trust, and to feel once more—to learn what it means to live unafraid. - MONICA LA ROSE

지혜로운 그리스도인

세계적인 코로나바이러스 대유행으로 전 세계 학교가 문을 닫게 되었습니다. 중국에서는 딩톡이라는 디지털 앱을 사용해서 교사들이 온라인 수업을 할 수 있도록 했습니다. 그러자 학생들은 딩톡의 앱 평가 점수가 아주 낮게 나오면 앱 스토어에서 삭제될 수 있다는 것을 알아냈습니다. 그날 밤 딩톡은 최저 평점을 수천 개나 받아서 총점이 바닥으로 떨어졌습니다.

예수님이라면 공부를 안 하려는 학생들을 칭찬하시지는 않겠지만 아이들의 기발한 생각에는 놀라셨을지도 모릅니다. 예수님은 해고 당한 날 주인에게 빚진 자들의 빚을 대폭 줄여준 한 청지기에 대한 색다른 이야기를 하셨습니다. 예수님은 청지기의 정직하지 못한 모습을 칭찬하시지는 않았지만, 그의 영리함을 좋게 보셨고 제자들에게도 똑같이 지혜롭기를 바라셨습니다. “내가 너희에게 말하노니 불의의 재물로 친구를 사귀라 그리하면 그 재물이 없어질 때에 그들이 너희를 영주할 처소로 영접하리라”(누가복음 16:9).

돈의 경우, 대부분의 사람들은 얼마나 손해를 볼지에 관심을 갖지만, 현명한 사람들은 그것을 어떻게 사용할지에 관심을 둡니다. 예수님은 우리가 베풀면 “친구를 얻고”, 그럼으로써 안전과 영향력을 얻게 된다고 말씀하셨습니다. 어떤 그룹이든 리더는 지불하는 사람입니다. 베푸는 것은 또한 “영원한 집”을 소유하게 해줍니다. 그것은 기꺼이 재물을 나누려는 마음은 예수님을 신뢰하는 것을 보여주기 때문입니다.

WISE CHRISTIANS

The coronavirus pandemic resulted in canceled schools around the world. In China, teachers responded with DingTalk, a digital app that enabled class to be held online. Then their students figured out that if DingTalk’s rating fell too low, it might be removed from the App Store. Overnight, thousands of one-star reviews dropped DingTalk’s score.

Jesus wouldn’t be impressed with the students shirking their responsibilities, but He might admire their ingenuity. He told an unusual story about a fired manager who on his final day slashed the bills of his master’s debtors. Jesus didn’t praise the manager’s dishonesty. Rather He commended his cleverness and wished His followers would be equally shrewd: “I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings” (LUKE 16:9).

When it comes to money, most people look at how much they might lose. Wise people look for what they can use. Jesus said giving to others “gain[s] friends,” which provides safety and influence. Who is the leader in any group? The one who pays. Giving also gains “eternal dwellings,” for our willingness to part with our cash shows our trust is in Jesus.

Even if we don’t have money, we do have time, skills, or a listening ear. Let’s ask God to show us how to creatively serve others for Jesus. - MIKE WITTMER

섬기며 살기

첼시는 열 살 때 멋진 미술용품 세트를 받은 후 하나님께서 미술을 통해 슬픈 마음을 위로해 주신다는 것을 경험했습니다. 첼시는 미술용품을 쉽게 구할 수 없는 아이들이 있다는 것을 알고 그들을 돕고 싶었습니다. 그래서 생일 파티 때 친구들에게 생일 축하 선물 대신 도움이 필요한 아이들에게 줄 미술용품을 가져와서 기부 상자에 넣어달라고 부탁했습니다.

나중에 첼시는 가족의 도움으로 ‘첼시의 자선사업’을 시작하여, 더 많은 아이들을 도울 수 있도록 더 많은 사람들에게 기부 상자를 채워줄 것을 요청했습니다. 그녀는 기부 상자를 받은 아이들에게 직접 그림을 가르쳐주기도 했습니다. 현지의 뉴스 진행자가 첼시를 인터뷰한 이후에는 전국 각지에서 사람들이 미술용품을 기부하기 시작했습니다. ‘첼시의 자선사업’이 계속해서 미술용품을 전 세계에 보내게 되면서, 하나님은 이 소녀를 통해 우리가 다른 사람들을 기꺼이 돕고자 할 때 하나님이 우리를 어떻게 사용하실 수 있는지를 보여주십니다.

첼시의 다른 사람을 향한 마음과 나누려는 의지는 신실한 청지기의 마음과 같습니다. 베드로 사도는 예수님을 믿는 모든 신자들에게 하나님께 받은 자원과 재능을 나누면서 서로 깊게 사랑하는 신실한 청지기가 되라고 격려합니다(베드로전서 4:8-11).

우리는 작은 사랑의 행동으로 다른 사람들의 마음을 움직여 나누는 일에 동참케 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리와 함께 섬길 동역자들을 모아 주시기도 합니다. 하나님께 의지함으로 우리는 하나님을 섬기고 하나님이 받으시기 합당한 영광을 그분께 돌려 드리며 살 수 있습니다.

LIVE TO SERVE

After ten-year-old Chelsea received an elaborate art set, she discovered that God used art to help her feel better when she was sad. When she found out that some kids didn’t have art supplies readily available, she wanted to help them. So when it was time for her birthday party, she asked her friends not to bring her gifts. Instead, she invited them to donate art supplies and help fill boxes for children in need.

Later, with her family’s help, she started Chelsea’s Charity. She began asking more people to help her fill boxes so she could help more kids. She has even taught art tips to groups who have received her boxes. After a local newscaster interviewed Chelsea, people started donating supplies from all over the country. As Chelsea’s Charity continues sending art supplies internationally, this young girl is demonstrating how God can use us when we’re willing to live to serve others.

Chelsea’s compassion and willingness to share reflects the heart of a faithful steward. The apostle Peter encourages all believers in Jesus to be faithful stewards as they “love each other deeply” by sharing the resources and talents God has given them (1 PETER 4:8–11).

Our small acts of love can inspire others to join us in giving. God can even rally supporters to serve alongside us. As we rely on Him, we can live to serve and give Him the glory He deserves. - XOCHITL DIXON

성경공부

제임스 패커(1926-2020)는 그의 대표작 ‘하나님을 아는 지식’에서 유명한 네 명의 기독교인에 대해 이야기하면서 그들을 “성경을 갉아먹는 비버들”이라고 불렀습니다. 그들은 다 훈련받은 학자는 아니었지만, 마치 비버가 나무를 끝까지 파서 갉아먹는 것처럼 하나님을 알기 위해 대단한 노력으로 성경을 파고들었습니다. 패커는 나아가 성경 공부를 통해 하나님을 아는 것은 학자들만의 일이 아니라고 했습니다. “신학적으로 옳다는 것으로 만족하는 많이 배운 학자보다, 성령으로 충만하여 성경을 읽고 설교를 듣는 평범한 사람이 구원자 하나님과 훨씬 더 깊은 사귐을 가질 수 있다.”

안타깝게도 성경을 공부하는 사람들이 다 구주를 더 알고 더 닮기 원하는 겸손한 마음으로 하지 않습니다. 예수님 당시에도 구약성경을 읽었던 사람들이 있었지만 정작 성경이 말하는 바로 그분을 알아보지 못했습니다. “너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 연구하거니와 이 성경이 곧 내게 대하여 증언하는 것이니라 그러나 너희가 영생을 얻기 위하여 내게 오기를 원하지 아니하는도다”(요한복음 5:39-40).

때때로 성경을 읽는 것이 힘이 드십니까? 아니면 성경공부를 완전히 포기하셨습니까? 성경을 갉아먹는 “비버들”은 단순히 성경을 읽는 사람들이 아닙니다. 그들은 성경 안에 나타나 있는 예수님을 알고 사랑하기 위해 눈과 마음을 열어 기도하며 차근차근 성경을 끝까지 파고드는 사람들입니다.

STUDYING THE SCRIPTURES

In his classic work Knowing God, J. I. Packer (1926–2020) spoke of four well-known believers in Christ whom he called “beavers for the Bible.” Not all were trained scholars, but each one exercised great care to know God by gnawing into the Scripture, like a beaver digs in and gnaws away at a tree. Packer further noted that knowing God through Bible study is not just for scholars. “A simple Bible reader and sermon hearer who is full of the Holy Spirit will develop a far deeper acquaintance with his God and Savior than a more learned scholar who is content with being theologically correct.”

Unfortunately, not all who study the Bible do so with humble hearts with the goal of getting to know the Savior better and becoming more like Him. In Jesus’ day there were those who read the Old Testament Scriptures, yet they missed the very One they spoke of. “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (JOHN 5:39–40).

Do you sometimes find yourself stumped as you read the Bible? Or have you given up studying the Scriptures altogether? Bible “beavers” are more than Bible readers. They prayerfully and carefully gnaw away at Scripture in ways that open their eyes and hearts to see and love Jesus—the One revealed in it. - ARTHUR JACKSON

내부로부터 무너짐

나의 십대 시절 엄마가 거실의 벽에 벽화를 그리셨는데, 그 그림은 몇 년 동안 계속 그 자리에 있었습니다. 거기에는 양쪽에 뉘어 있는 흰 기둥과 무너진 분수, 그리고 부서진 동상이 있는 폐허가 된 고대 그리스의 신전이 그려져 있었습니다. 한때 상당한 아름다움을 지녔었던 그 헬레니즘 건축물을 보면서 나는 무엇 때문에 그렇게 파괴됐는지를 상상해 보았습니다. 한때 위대하고 번성했던 문명이 ‘내부’로부터 쇠퇴하고 무너지게 된 비극에 대해 공부를 시작하면서 그것이 더욱 궁금했습니다.

오늘날 우리 주변에서 볼 수 있는 죄로 타락한 모습들과 무모한 파괴행위들을 보면 속이 상합니다. 우리는 자연스럽게 하나님을 거부한 사람들과 나라들 때문이라고 그 이유를 설명하려고 합니다. 하지만 우리의 내면 또한 들여다봐야 하지 않을까요? 성경말씀은 자신의 내면을 깊이 들여다보지 않으면서 다른 이들의 회개만을 촉구하는 위선자의 모습을 우리에게 경고하고 있습니다(마태복음 7:1-5).

시편 32편은 자신의 죄를 보고 고백하라고 우리에게 도전을 주고 있습니다. 우리는 자신의 죄를 깨닫고 고백할 때 비로소 죄책감에서 자유롭게 되고 참된 회개의 기쁨을 누릴 수 있습니다(1-5절). 하나님께서 우리에게 완전한 용서를 주신다는 사실이 기쁨으로 다가올 때 죄와 싸우고 있는 다른 이들에게도 그 희망을 전해줄 수 있습니다.

CRUMBLED FROM WITHIN

When I was a teenager, my mom painted a mural on our living room wall, which stayed there for several years. It showed an ancient Greek scene of a ruined temple with white columns lying on their sides, a crumbling fountain, and a broken statue. As I looked at the Hellenistic architecture that had
once held great beauty, I tried to imagine what had destroyed it. I was curious, especially when I began studying about the tragedy of once great and thriving civilizations that had decayed and crumbled from within.

The sinful depravity and wanton destruction we see around us today can be troubling. It’s natural for us to try to explain it by pointing to people and nations that have rejected God. But shouldn’t we be casting our gaze inwardly as well? Scripture warns us about being hypocrites when we call out others to turn from their sinful ways without also taking a deeper look inside our own hearts (MATTHEW 7:1–5).

Psalm 32 challenges us to see and confess our own sin. It’s only when we recognize and confess our personal sin that we can experience freedom from guilt and the joy of true repentance (VV. 1–5). And as we rejoice in knowing that God offers us complete forgiveness, we can share that hope with others who are also struggling with sin. - CINDY HESS KASPER

희생해야 할 때

2020년 2월 코로나바이러스 감염증 위기가 시작되던 당시 한 신문 칼럼니스트의 주장이 내게 충격을 주었습니다. 그녀는 우리가 기꺼이 자가 격리에 들어가고 다른 사람들을 감염시키지 않으려고 자기의 일이나 여행, 쇼핑 습관까지 바꾸려 할지를 물으며 이렇게 썼습니다. “이것은 단순히 임상실험 차원이 아니라 다른 사람들을 위해 우리 자신을 기꺼이 내어줄 수 있는지를 테스트하는 것이다.” 미덕이 필요하다는 사실이 갑자기 뉴스의 1면을 장식했습니다.

자신도 불안한 상황에서 다른 이들의 필요를 배려한다는 것은 쉽지 않은 일입니다. 하지만 감사하게도 다른 사람의 필요를 충족시키는 일은 우리의 의지만으로 하는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 성령님께 간구하여 무관심 대신 ‘사랑’을, 슬픔 대신 ‘희락’을, 불안 대신 ‘화평’을, 충동을 이길 ‘오래 참음’ 을, 남들을 돌볼 ‘자비’를, 그들의 필요를 볼 수 있는 ‘양선’을, 약속을 지킬 수 있는 ‘충성’을, 차가움 대신 ‘온유’를, 자기 중심을 이길 ‘절제’를 구할 수 있습니다(갈라디아서 5:22-23). 우리는 이 모든 것에 있어 완전할 수는 없지만 지속적으로 성령님의 이 은사들을 구하라고 요구받고 있습니다(에베소서 5:18).

작가 리차드 포스터는 거룩함을 마땅히 행할 일이 있을 때 그것을 해내는 능력이라고 정의했습니다. 그런 거룩함은 세계적인 전염병 상황뿐 아니라 매일같이 필요합니다. 다른 이들을 위해 우리가 희생할 수 있는지요? 성령님, 마땅히 해야 할 일을 해낼 수 있는 능력을 우리에게 채워 주소서.

WHEN TO SACRIFICE

In February 2020, as the COVID-19 crisis was just beginning, a newspaper columnist’s concerns struck me. Would we willingly self-isolate, she wondered, changing our work, travel, and shopping habits so others wouldn’t get sick? “This isn’t just a test of clinical resources,” she wrote, “but of our willingness to put ourselves out for others.” Suddenly, the need for virtue was front-page news.

It can be hard to consider others’ needs while we’re anxious about our own. Thankfully, we’re not left with willpower alone to meet the need. We can ask the Holy Spirit to give us love to replace our indifference, joy to counter sadness, peace to replace our anxiety, forbearance (patience) to push out our impulsiveness, kindness to care about others, goodness to see to their needs, faithfulness to keep our promises, gentleness instead of harshness, and self-control to lift us beyond self-centeredness (GALATIANS 5:22–23). While we won’t be perfect at all of this, we’re called to seek the Spirit’s gifts of virtue regularly (EPHESIANS 5:18).

Author Richard Foster once described holiness as the ability to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. And such holiness is needed every day, not just in a pandemic. Do we have the capacity to make sacrifices for the sake of others? Holy Spirit, fill us with the power to do what needs to be done. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

미국의 한 흑인 여성은 30년간 큰 규모의 국제 사역 기구에서 신실하게 일했습니다. 그런데 그녀가 동료들과 인종차별에 관한 대화를 가지려고 하자 동료들이 입을 다물어 버렸습니다. 마침내 2020년 봄, 인종차별 문제가 세계적으로 공론화되자 동료들이 “말문을 열기 시작했습니다.” 그녀는 마음이 복잡하고 고통스러운 가운데서도, 토론이 시작된 것에 대해 감사했지만 동료들이 말문을 열기까지 왜 그리 오랜 시간이 걸렸는지 이해할 수 없었습니다.

경우에 따라서 침묵은 미덕이 될 수 있습니다. 솔로몬 왕은 전도서에 이렇게 기록했습니다. “범사에 기한이 있고 천하 만사가 다 때가 있나니... 잠잠할 때가 있고 말할 때가 있느니라”(전도서 3:1, 7).

그러나 심한 편견이나 불의 앞에서 침묵하는 것은 피해와 상처를 더할 뿐입니다. 자신의 발언 때문에 독일 나치에 의해 투옥된 루터교 목사 마르틴 니뮐러는 종전 후 쓴 시에서 이렇게 고백했습니다. “처음에 그들은 공산당원을 잡으러 왔다. 하지만 나는 공산당원이 아니었으므로 아무 말도 하지 않았다. 나중에 그들은 유대인과 천주교 신자를 잡으러 왔다. 하지만 나는 아무 말도 하지 않았다.” 마침내 “그들은 나를 잡으러 왔다. 그때에는 나를 위해 말해줄 사람이 아무도 남아 있지 않았다.”

불의에 대항해서 소리 내어 말하려면 용기와 사랑이 필요합니다. 하지만 하나님의 도움을 구하면서 말을 해야 할 때가 바로 지금이라는 것을 깨닫습니다.

A TIME TO SPEAK

For thirty long years, the African American woman worked faithfully for a large global ministry. Yet when she sought to talk with co-workers about racial injustice, she was met with silence. Finally, however, in the spring of 2020—as open discussions about racism expanded around the world—her ministry friends “started having some open dialogue.” With mixed feelings and pain, she was grateful discussions began, but wondered why it took her colleagues so long to speak up.

Silence can be a virtue in some situations. As King Solomon wrote in the book of Ecclesiastes, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: . . . a time to be silent and a time to speak” (ECCLESIASTES 3:1, 7).

Silence in the face of bigotry and injustice, however, only enables harm and hurt. Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoeller (jailed in Nazi Germany for speaking out) confessed that in a poem he penned after the war. “First they came for the Communists,” he wrote, “but I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.” He added, “Then they came for” the Jews, the Catholics, and others, “but I didn’t speak up.” Finally, “they came for me—and by that time there was no one left to speak up.”

It takes courage—and love—to speak up against injustice. Seeking God’s help, however, we recognize the time to speak is now. - PATRICIA RAYBON

성령님이 주시는 통찰력

한 프랑스 병사가 군대 야영지의 방어 시설을 보강하기 위해 사막의 모래를 파던 중 생각지도 않게 아주 중대한 것을 발견했습니다. 삽으로 모래를 떠서 옮기다가 돌판 하나를 본 것입니다. 예사로운 돌판이 아니었습니다. 그것은 프톨레미 5세 때의 법과 통치에 관한 내용이 세 가지 언어로 새겨진 로제타석이었습니다. 현재 대영박물관에 소장되어 있는 그 돌판은 상형문자로 알려진 고대 이집트 문자의 신비를 풀어줄 19세기의 가장 중요한 고고학적 발굴 중의 하나입니다.

우리 대다수에게 성경의 많은 부분도 심오한 신비에 싸여 있습니다. 예수님은 십자가에 달리시기 전날 밤 성령을 보내 주시겠다고 제자들에게 약속하시며 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “그러나 진리의 성령이 오시면 그가 너희를 모든 진리 가운데로 인도하시리니 그가 스스로 말하지 않고 오직 들은 것을 말하며 장래 일을 너희에게 알리시리라”(요한복음 16:13). 어떤 의미에서 성령님은 진리 위에, 성경의 신비로운 진리들에 빛을 비추어주는 하나님의 로제타석입니다.

우리는 성경말씀을 모두 완전히 이해하게 될 거라고 약속 받지는 못했 지만, 예수님을 따르는 데 필요한 모든 것을 성령님이 알게 해주신다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다. 성령님이 우리를 그 핵심 진리들로 이끌어 주실 것입니다.

INSIGHT FROM THE SPIRIT

As the French soldier dug in the desert sand, reinforcing the defenses of his army’s encampment, he had no idea he would make a momentous discovery. Moving another shovelful of sand, he saw a stone. Not just any stone. It was the Rosetta Stone, containing laws and governance from King Ptolemy V written in three languages. That stone (now housed in the British Museum) would be one of the most important archaeological finds of the nineteenth century, helping to unlock the mysteries of the ancient Egyptian writing known as hieroglyphics.

For many of us, much of Scripture is also wrapped in deep mystery. Still, the night before the cross, Jesus promised His followers that He would send the Holy Spirit. He told them, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come” (JOHN 16:13). The Holy Spirit is, in a sense, our divine Rosetta Stone, shedding light on the truth—including truths behind the mysteries of the Bible.

While we’re not promised absolute understanding of everything given to us in the Scriptures, we can have confidence that by the Spirit we can comprehend everything necessary for us to follow Jesus. He will guide us into those vital truths. - BILL CROWDER

잘 산다는 것

한국의 한 단체는 생존해 있는 사람들을 위한 장례식을 무료로 제공해주고 있습니다. 그 단체가 2012년에 출범한 이후, 십대부터 은퇴한 이들까지 총 이만 오천 명이 넘는 사람들이 “살아서 하는 장례식”에 참여하여 자신의 죽음을 진지하게 생각해 봄으로써 그들의 삶을 개선해 보려고 했습니다. 관계자들은 이렇게 말합니다. “가상 장례식은 참가자들에게 그들의 삶에 참 의미를 부여하고, 감사함을 갖게 하며, 가족이나 친구들과의 관계에서 용서와 회복을 촉진하기 위한 것입니다.”

이 이야기는 전도서의 저자가 기록한 지혜의 말씀과 상통합니다. “살아 있는 사람은 누구나 죽는다는 것을 명심하여야 한다”(전도서 7:2, 새번역). 죽음은 우리에게 인생이 짧다는 것과, 잘 지내며 더 사랑하며 살기에도 시간은 한정되어 있음을 상기시켜 줍니다. 그리고 우리가 꼭 쥐고 있던 하나님이 주신 어떤 선물들, 곧 물질이나 관계, 즐거움 같은 것들에 집착하지 않고 지금 이 땅에서 자유롭게 그것들을 즐기면서 “좀이나 동록이 해하지 못하며 도둑이 구멍을 뚫지도 못하고 도둑질도 못하는 하늘에 보물을”(마태복음 6:20) 쌓아가게 해줍니다.

죽음이 불시에 닥칠 수 있다는 것을 생각하면, 부모님 방문이나 하나님 섬길 기회를 미루거나 일에 바쁘다는 핑계로 아이들과 시간을 보내지 못하는 것을 막을 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님의 도움으로 지혜롭게 사는 법을 배울 수 있습니다.

LIVING WELL

Free funerals for the living. That’s the service offered by an establishment in South Korea. Since it opened in 2012, more than 25,000 people—from teenagers to retirees—have participated in mass “living funeral” services, hoping to improve their lives by considering their deaths. Officials say “the simulated death ceremonies are meant to give the participant a truthful sense of their lives, inspire gratitude, and aid in forgiveness and reconnection among family and friends.”

These words echo the wisdom given by the teacher who wrote Ecclesiastes. “Death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart” (ECCLESIASTES 7:2). Death reminds us of the brevity of life and that we only have a certain amount of time to live and love well. It loosens our grip on some of God’s good gifts—such as money, relationships, and pleasure—and frees us to enjoy them in the here and now as we store up “treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (MATTHEW 6:20).

As we remember that death may come knocking anytime, perhaps it’ll compel us to not postpone that visit with our parents, delay our decision to serve God in a particular way, or compromise our time with our children for our work. With God’s help, we can learn to live wisely. - POH FANG CHIA

우리를 위한 하나님의 계획

지난 6년 동안 아그네스는 목사 사모인 존경하는 시어머니를 본받아 자기도 “완벽한 목사 사모”가 되고자 노력했습니다. 그녀는 사모 역할을 하면서는 작가와 화가의 일을 병행할 수 없다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 이렇게 자신의 창의성을 억누름으로써 우울증을 앓게 되고 자살을 생각할 지경에까지 이르렀습니다. 그러다가 가까운 곳의 한 목사의 도움으로 그 어둠에서 빠져나올 수 있었습니다. 그 목사는 그녀와 함께 기도하면서 매일 아침 두 시간씩 글을 쓰게 하였습니다. 이 일을 통해 그녀는 자기가 “숨겨진 소명” 이라고 이름한, 그녀에게 주어진 하나님의 부르심에 눈을 뜨게 되었습니다. 그녀는 “내가 진정한 나 자신, 완전한 나 자신이 되기 위해 하나님이 내게 주신 창의력이 하나 하나 그 통로들을 찾아 제대로 흘러야 했다.”고 썼습니다.

그녀는 나중에 다윗의 한 시에서 본인의 소명을 찾게 되었다고 말했습니다. “여호와를 기뻐하라 그가 네 마음의 소원을 네게 이루어 주시리로다”(시편
37:4). 하나님의 인도하심과 주관하심을 믿고 자신의 삶을 하나님께 맡겼을 때(5절) 하나님은 그녀에게 글을 쓰고 그림을 그리는 것뿐 아니라, 사람들이 하나님과 더 잘 교통하도록 도와줄 수 있는 길을 열어 주셨습니다.

우리 각자에게는 하나님께서 주신 “숨겨진 소명”이 있습니다. 그것을 통해 우리는 그분의 사랑받는 자녀라는 사실뿐 아니라, 주신 재능과 열정으로 하나님을 섬길 수 있는 우리 나름의 고유한 방법을 알게 됩니다. 우리가 하나님을 의지하며 기뻐할 때 하나님께서 우리를 인도해 주실 것입니다.

GOD’S PLANS FOR YOU

For six years, Agnes tried to make herself the “perfect minister’s wife,” modeling herself after her adored mother-in-law (also a pastor’s wife). She thought that in this role she couldn’t also be a writer and painter, but in burying her creativity she became depressed and contemplated suicide. Only the help of a neighboring pastor moved her out of the darkness as he prayed with her and assigned her two hours of writing each morning. This awakened her to what she called her “sealed orders”—the calling God had given her. She wrote, “For me to be really myself—my complete self—every . . . flow of creativity that God had given me had to find its channel.”

Later, she pointed to one of David’s songs that expressed how she found her calling: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (PSALM 37:4). As she committed her way to God, trusting Him to lead and guide her (V. 5), He made a way for her not only to write and paint but to help others to better communicate with Him.

God has a set of “sealed orders” for each of us, not only that we’ll know we’re His beloved children but understand the unique ways we can serve Him through our gifts and passions. He’ll lead us as we trust and delight in Him. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
