복수를 꾀하지 말라

농부는 트럭에 올라타서 아침 일과로 농작물을 둘러보기 시작했습니다. 농장에서 가장 멀리 떨어진 한 모퉁이에 이르렀을 때 농부는 피가 끓어오르기 시작했습니다. 누군가가 그의 농장 외진 곳에 또다시 불법으로 쓰레기를 버린 것입니다.

농부는 음식 쓰레기봉투들을 트럭에 옮겨 싣다가 봉투 한 장을 발견 했습니다. 그 봉투에는 쓰레기 투기꾼의 주소가 인쇄되어 있었습니다. 그냥 지나쳐버릴 수 없는 너무나 좋은 기회였습니다. 그날 밤 농부는 쓰레기 투기꾼의 집으로 차를 몰고 가 그 사람이 버린 것뿐 아니라 자기의 쓰레기까지 그 사람의 마당에 갖다 버렸습니다.

복수는 달콤하다는 말이 있지만, 그것이 과연 옳은 일일까요? 사무엘상 24장을 보면 다윗과 그의 부하들은 그들을 죽이려는 사울 왕을 피해 동굴 속에 숨어 있었습니다. 사울 왕이 볼일을 보려고 그 동굴 속을 서성일 때 부하들은 복수할 수 있는 절호의 기회로 생각했습니다(3-4절). 그러나 다윗은 똑같이 되갚아주고 싶은 마음을 억제하며, “내 주를 치는 것은 여호와께서 금하시는 것”이라고 말했습니다(6절). 다윗이 자신의 목숨을 살려주기로 했다는 것을 알게 된 사울은 그것을 못 믿어 하며 “너는 나보다 의롭도다”라고 외쳤습니다 (17-18절).

우리와 우리의 사랑하는 사람들이 억울한 일을 당할 때, 가해자에게 복수할 기회가 찾아올 수도 있습니다. 이때 우리는 그 농부처럼 복수심에 자신을 내어주어야 할까요, 아니면 다윗처럼 억제해야 할까요? 우리는 복수가 아닌 의로움을 선택할 수 있을까요?

NOT SEEKING REVENGE

The farmer climbed into his truck and began his morning inspection of the crops. On reaching the farthest edge of the property, his blood began to boil. Someone had used the farm’s seclusion to illegally dump their trash—again.

As he filled the truck with the bags of food scraps, the farmer found an envelope. On it was printed the offender’s address. Here was an opportunity too good to ignore. That night he drove to the offender’s house and filled his garden with not just the dumped trash but his own!

Revenge is sweet, some say, but is it right? In 1 Samuel 24, David and his men were hiding in a cave to escape a murderous King Saul. When Saul wandered into the same cave to relieve himself, David’s men saw a too-good-to-ignore opportunity for David to get revenge (VV. 3–4). But David went against this desire to get even. “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master,” he said (V. 6). When Saul discovered that David chose to spare his life, he was incredulous. “You are more righteous than I,” he exclaimed (VV. 17–18).

As we or our loved ones face injustice, opportunities to take revenge on offenders may well come. Will we give in to these desires, as the farmer did, or go against them, like David? Will we choose righteousness over revenge? SHERIDAN VOYSEY

폭풍을 뚫고 지나감

스코틀랜드 선교사 알렉산더 더프가 1830년 인도로 가는 첫 항해 중 남아프리카 해안에서 폭풍을 만나 배가 파선되었습니다. 그와 동료 승객들은 가까스로 조그만 한 외딴섬에 닿았는데 얼마 지나지 않아 한 선원이 더프의 성경책 한 권이 해변에 떠 밀려온 것을 발견했습니다. 책이 마른 후 더프는 살아남은 동료들에게 시편 107편을 읽어주었고 그들은 용기를 얻게 되었습니다. 구조가 이루어지고 또 한 번의 난파가 있었지만 마침내 더프는 인도에 도착했습니다.

시편 107편에는 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성을 구원하신 방법 몇 가지를 기록합니다. 더프와 선원들은 의심 없이 다음의 하나님의 말씀에 공감하며 위로를 얻었습니다. “(여호와께서) 광풍을 고요하게 하사 물결도 잔잔하게 하시는도다 그들이 평온함으로 말미암아 기뻐하는 중에 여호와께서 그들이 바라는 항구로 인도하시는도다”(29-30절). 그리고 이스라엘 백성들처럼 그들도 “여호와의 한결같은 사랑과 그가 행하신 놀라운 일에 대하여 감사했습니다” (31절).

우리는 신약성경(마태복음 8:23-27; 마가복음 4:35-41)에서 시편 107:28-30과 비슷한 경우를 봅니다. 예수님과 그의 제자들이 배에 있을 때 사나운 광풍이 일기 시작했습니다. 제자들이 두려워서 소리치자 인간의 몸을 입으신 하나님이신 예수님께서 바다를 잠잠하게 하셨습니다. 우리도 용기를 낼 수 있습니다! 능력의 하나님이요 구원자이신 우리 예수님께서 폭풍 속에서 우리의 외침을 듣고 응답하시며 우리를 위로해 주십니다.

CARRIED THROUGH THE STORM

During Scottish missionary Alexander Duff’s first voyage to India in 1830, he was shipwrecked in a storm off the coast of South Africa. He and his fellow passengers made it to a small, desolate island; and a short time later, one of the crew found a copy of a Bible belonging to Duff washed ashore on the beach. When the book dried, Duff read Psalm 107 to his fellow survivors, and they took courage. Finally, after a rescue and yet another shipwreck, Duff arrived in India.

Psalm 107 lists some of the ways God delivered the Israelites. Duff and his shipmates no doubt identified with and took comfort in the words: “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven” (VV. 29–30). And, like the Israelites, they too “[gave] thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind” (V. 31).

We see a parallel to Psalm 107:28–30 in the New Testament (MATTHEW 8:23–27; MARK 4:35–41). Jesus and His disciples were in a boat at sea when a violent storm began. His disciples cried out in fear, and Jesus—God in flesh—calmed the sea. We too can take courage! Our powerful God and Savior hears and responds to our cries and comforts us in the midst of our storms. ALYSON KIEDA

혼란 속의 평화

폭죽 같은 어떤 소리에 조앤이 잠에서 깼습니다. 유리가 산산조각 났습니다. 그녀는 이럴 땐 누가 같이 있었으면 하고 생각하며 무슨 일인지 알아보려고 일어났습니다. 어두운 거리는 텅 비어 있었고 집은 괜찮아 보였습니다. 그러다가 깨어진 거울을 보았습니다.

수사관들은 가스관에서 불과 0.5인치(약 1.3센티미터) 떨어진 곳에서 총알을 발견했습니다. 만약 총알이 가스관에 맞았다면 그녀는 아마 살아 있지 못했을 것입니다. 나중에 그것이 인근 아파트에서 날아온 유탄으로 판명되었지만, 조앤은 집에 있는 것이 두려웠습니다. 그래서 그녀는 평안을 위해 기도했습니다. 그리고 유리 조각을 치우고 나자 곧 마음이 평온해졌습니다.

PEACE IN THE CHAOS

Something that sounded like firecrackers roused Joanne from sleep. Glass shattered. Wishing she didn’t live alone, she got up to see what was going on. The dark streets were empty and the house seemed to be okay—then she saw the broken mirror.

Investigators found a bullet only a half-inch from the gas line. If it had struck the line, she probably wouldn’t have made it out alive. Later they discovered it was a stray bullet from nearby apartments, but now Joanne was afraid to be at home. She prayed for peace, and once the glass was cleaned up, her heart calmed.

Psalm 121 is a reminder for us to look to God in times of trouble. Here, we see that we can have peace and calm because our “help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (V. 2). The God who created the universe helps and watches over us (V. 3)—even while we sleep—but He Himself never sleeps (V. 4). He watches over us day and night (V. 6), “both now and forevermore” (V. 8).

No matter what kind of situations we find ourselves in, God sees. And He’s waiting for us to turn to Him. When we do, our circumstances may not always change, but He’s promised His peace in the midst of it all. JULIE SCHWAB

추모와 축하

1907년 12월 6일, 미국 웨스트 버지니아주의 한 작은 마을을 뒤흔든 폭발 사고는 탄광산업 역사상 가장 큰 사고 중 하나였습니다. 약 360명의 광부들이 목숨을 잃은 이 끔찍한 비극으로 250여 명의 여인들과 1,000여 명의 아이들이 남편과 아버지를 잃은 것으로 추산되었습니다. 지금까지 역사가들은 그 추모식이 시발점이 되어 차차 미국에서 ‘아버지 날’로 기념하게 되었다고 말합니다. 커다란 상실을 추모하던 날이 나중에는 축하의 날이 된 것입니다.

인간의 역사에서 가장 큰 비극은 인간이 창조주를 십자가에 못 박은 사건이었습니다. 그러나 그 어두운 순간 또한 추모와 축하, 두 가지를 다 가져왔습니다. 십자가에 달리시기 전날 밤 예수님은 이스라엘의 유월절 예식을 취하여 그분 자신의 기념일로 만드셨습니다. 누가의 기록은 그 장면을 이렇게 묘사합니다. “또 떡을 가져 감사 기도하시고 떼어 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 이것은 너희를 위하여 주는 내 몸이라 너희가 이를 행하여 나를 기념하라” (누가복음 22:19).

오늘날에도 우리는 성찬식을 할 때마다 우리를 구원한 아픈 대가를 추모하고, 주님의 희생으로 얻은 생명의 선물을 기뻐하며 우리를 향한 그분의 크고 변함없는 사랑에 영광을 올려드립니다. 찰스 웨슬리는 그의 위대한 찬송가에서 이렇게 고백했습니다. “놀라운 사랑! 어찌하여 나의 하나님이 나를 위해 죽으셔야 했나?”

REMEMBER AND CELEBRATE

On December 6, 1907, explosions rocked a small community in the US state of West Virginia, producing one of the worst disasters in the history of the coal-mining industry. Some 360 miners were killed, and it’s been estimated that this horrific tragedy left behind about 250 widows and 1,000 children without fathers. Historians maintain that the memorial service became the seedbed from which the celebration of Father’s Day in the US would eventually grow. Out of great loss came remembrance and—eventually—celebration.

The greatest tragedy in human history occurred when human beings crucified their Creator. Yet, that dark moment also produced both remembrance and celebration. The night before He would go to the cross, Jesus took the elements of Israel’s Passover and created His own memorial celebration. Luke’s record describes the scene this way: “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me’ ” (LUKE 22:19).

Still today, whenever we take communion, we honor His great, unflinching love for us—remembering the cost of our rescue and celebrating the gift of life His sacrifice produced. As Charles Wesley said in his great hymn, “Amazing love! How can it be that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?” BILL CROWDER

우리 삶의 이야기를 아시는 하나님

가장 친한 친구와 점심을 먹고서 집으로 운전하여 돌아오면서 그 친구로 인해 큰 소리로 하나님께 감사했습니다. 친구는 나를 잘 알고 나조차도 사랑하지 않는 어떤 내 모습에도 불구하고 나를 사랑합니다. 그녀는 나의 특이한 부분이나 습관, 실수 등, 나의 있는 모습 그대로를 받아주는 몇 안 되는 친구 중에 하나입니다. 하지만 아직도 내게는 그녀와, 그리고 내가 사랑하는 다른 사람들과 나누기를 꺼려 하는 내 이야기가 여전히 있습니다. 그것은 내가 분명히 용기 내어 할 일을 못했을 때라든지, 남을 비판하고 함부로 대하고 차갑게 대했던 경우들입니다.

그러나 하나님은 나의 이야기를 다 알고 계십니다. 하나님은 다른 사람들과 이야기하기가 꺼려질 때에도 마음 편히 이야기할 수 있는 분이십니다.

우리가 잘 아는 시편 139편은 우리를 다스리시는 왕이신 주님과의 친밀한 모습을 그리고 있습니다. 주님은 우리를 완전히 아십니다!(1절). 주님은 “[우리의] 모든 행위를 익히 아십니다”(3절). 주님은 우리의 혼란스러움과 불안한 마음, 유혹과의 싸움을 가지고 나아오라고 하십니다. 우리가 자신을 주님께 온전히 드리고자 하면, 주님은 오셔서 우리가 주님으로부터 벗어남으로 겪는 슬픈 이야기들을 고쳐서 새로 쓰십니다.

하나님은 누구보다도 우리를 더 잘 아십니다. 더 나아가 사랑하기까지 하십니다! 우리가 매일 주님께 자신을 맡기고 그분을 더 많이 알려고 할 때, 주님은 그분의 영광을 위해 우리의 이야기를 바꾸어 주실 것입니다. 주님은 우리의 이야기를 계속해서 써 나가시는 분입니다.

GOD KNOWS YOUR STORY

As I drove home after lunch with my best friend, I thanked God out loud for her. She knows me and loves me in spite of things I don’t love about myself. She’s one of a small circle of people who accept me as I am—my quirks, habits, and screw-ups. Still, there are parts of my story I resist sharing even with her and others that I love—times where I’ve clearly not been the hero, times I’ve been judgmental or unkind or unloving.

But God does know my whole story. He’s the One I can freely talk to even if I’m reluctant to talk with others.

The familiar words of Psalm 139 describe the intimacy we enjoy with our Sovereign King. He knows us completely! (V. 1). He’s “familiar with all [our] ways” (V. 3). He invites us to come to Him with our confusion, our anxious thoughts, and our struggles with temptation. When we’re willing to yield completely to Him, He reaches out to restore and rewrite the parts of our story that make us sad because we’ve wandered from Him.

God knows us better than anyone else ever can, and still . . . He loves us! When we daily surrender ourselves to Him and seek to know Him more fully, He can change our story for His glory. He’s the Author who’s continuing to write it. CINDY HESS KASPER

미국 복음주의의 거장 빌리 그래함은 한때 성경을 온전한 사실로 받아들이는 게 힘들었다고 말했습니다. 어느 날 밤 샌 버나디노 산맥에 있는 한 수양관에서 달빛을 받으며 혼자 걷던 그는 나무 그루터기에 성경을 놓고 무릎을 꿇고는 “더듬거리며” 이렇게 기도할 수밖에 없었습니다. “하나님! 이 책에는 제가 이해하지 못하는 것들이 너무 많습니다.”

그래함은 자신의 혼란스러움을 고백함으로써 성령께서 마침내 “나를 자유롭게 하셔서, ‘하나님 아버지, 제가 믿음으로 성경을 하나님의 말씀으로 받아들이겠습니다.’라고 말하게 하셨다.”고 했습니다. 그리고 일어서는 그에게는 아직도 의문들이 있었지만, “나의 영이 영적 전쟁을 싸워 이겼음을 알았다.”라고 말했습니다.

젊은 선지자 예레미야도 영적 싸움을 싸웠습니다. 하지만 그는 계속해서 성경 속에서 답을 찾았습니다. “내가 주의 말씀을 얻어 먹었사오니 주의 말씀은 내게 기쁨과 내 마음의 즐거움입니다”(예레미야 15:16). 그는 “여호와의 말씀으로 말미암아......나의 마음이 불붙는 것 같아서 골수에 사무친다”(20:8-9)고 선언했습니다. 19세기 복음주의자 찰스 스펄전은 이렇게 썼습니다. “[예레미야가] 우리에게 한 가지 비밀을 알려줍니다. 그의 외면적인 삶, 특히 그의 신실한 사역은 내면적으로 자신이 전하는 말씀을 사랑한 데서 말미암은 것이었습니다.”

TRUSTING THE BIBLE

Billy Graham, the renowned American evangelist, once described his struggle to accept the Bible as completely true. One night as he walked alone in the moonlight at a retreat center in the San Bernardino Mountains, he dropped to his knees and placed his Bible on a tree stump, able only to “stutter” a prayer: “Oh, God! There are many things in this book I do not understand.”

By confessing his confusion, Graham said the Holy Spirit finally “freed me to say it. ‘Father, I am going to accept this as thy Word—by faith!’ ” When he stood up, he still had questions, but he said, “I knew a spiritual battle in my soul had been fought and won.”

The young prophet Jeremiah fought spiritual battles too. Yet he consistently sought answers in Scripture. “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (JEREMIAH 15:16). He declared, “The word of the Lord . . . is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones” (20:8–9). Nineteenth-century evangelist Charles Spurgeon wrote, “[Jeremiah] lets us into a secret. His outer life, especially his faithful ministry, was due to his inward love of the word which he preached.”

We too can shape our life through the wisdom of Scripture despite our struggles. We can keep studying, as always, by faith. PATRICIA RAYBON

행동하는 믿음

샘의 아버지는 군사 쿠데타 중에 목숨을 위해 피신할 수밖에 없었습니다. 그래서 수입이 갑자기 없어진 그의 가족은 샘의 동생의 생명 연장에 꼭 필요한 약을 더 이상 살 수 없게 되었습니다. 샘은 하나님에 대해 분노하며 ‘도대체 우리가 무엇을 했기에 이런 일을 당해야 되나?’ 하고 생각했습니다.

그런데 예수님을 믿는 한 사람이 그 가족이 처한 곤경에 대해 듣고는 자기가 가진 돈으로 충분히 약을 살 수 있음을 알고 약을 사서 그들에게 전해주었습니다. 어느 모르는 사람이 전해준 생명을 살리는 선물은 커다란 영향을 미쳤습니다. 샘의 어머니는 “이번 주일에 이 분이 다니는 교회에 가자.” 라고 선언했습니다. 그리고 샘의 분노도 가라앉기 시작했습니다. 마침내 한 사람 한 사람씩, 온 식구가 다 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다.

ACTIVE FAITH

Sam’s father had to flee for his life during a military coup. With the sudden loss of income, the family could no longer afford the crucial medicine that kept Sam’s brother alive. Seething at God, Sam thought, What have we done to deserve this?

A follower of Jesus heard about the family’s troubles. Finding he had enough money to cover the medicine, he bought a supply and took it to them. The life-saving gift from a stranger had a profound impact. “This Sunday, we will go to this man’s church,” his mother declared. Sam’s anger began to subside. And eventually, one by one, each member of the family put their faith in Jesus.

When James wrote about the necessity of a lifestyle of integrity accompanying a profession of faith in Christ, he singled out the need to care for others. “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food,” James wrote. “If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” (2:15–16).

Our actions demonstrate the genuineness of our faith. Significantly, those actions can influence the faith-choices of others. In Sam’s case, he became a pastor and church-planter. Eventually he would call the man who helped his family “Papa Mapes.” He now knew him as his spiritual father—the one who showed them the love of Jesus. TIM GUSTAFSON

받은 은혜를 나누기

우리 아들은 입양 전에 보육원에서 어린 시절을 보냈습니다. 우리는 아이를 그 콘크리트 건물에서 집으로 데려오기 전에 먼저 남아있는 그의 소지품을 모아 달라고 부탁했습니다. 안타깝게도 아이는 아무것도 없었습니다. 우리는 아이가 입고 있는 옷을 준비한 새 옷으로 갈아입히고, 다른 아이들을 위해서도 옷들을 남겨두었습니다. 나는 그가 가진 것이 아무것도 없는 것이 슬펐지만, 이제부터 우리가 그의 육체적 정서적 필요를 채워줄 수 있다는 것이 기뻤습니다.

몇 년 후, 우리는 가난한 가정들을 위해 기부를 부탁하는 한 사람을 만났습니다. 내 아들은 즐거이 자신의 동물 인형들과 동전 얼마를 기부했습니다. 그의 배경을 생각해보면 자기가 가진 것을 꼭 붙잡고 싶은 마음이 더 컸을지도 모릅니다(이해할 만하지요).

그가 너그러움을 보인 이유는 초대교회의 경우와 같다는 생각이 듭니다. “하나님의 은혜가 그들 모두에게 너무나도 강력하게 역사하고 있었기 때문에” 그들 중에 가난한 사람이 없었습니다(사도행전 4:33-34). 사람들은 서로의 필요를 채워주기 위해 자발적으로 자신들의 소유를 팔았습니다.

물질적이든 정신적이든 우리가 다른 사람들의 필요를 알게 될 때, 우리 속에 역사하는 하나님의 은혜가 매우 강하여 초대 교회와 같이 궁핍한 이들에게 마음으로부터 기꺼이 베풀 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이것은 우리가 예수님 안에서 “한 마음과 한 뜻”(32절)을 품은 성도로서 하나님의 은혜의 질그릇이 되게 해줍니다.

EXTENDING GRACE TO OTHERS

Our son spent the early years of his life in a children’s home prior to our adopting him. Before leaving the cinderblock building together to go home, we asked to collect his belongings. Sadly, he had none. We exchanged the clothes he was wearing for the new items we’d brought for him and also left some clothing for the other children. Even though I was grieved by how little he had, I rejoiced that we could now help meet his physical and emotional needs.

A few years later, we saw a person asking for donations for families in need. My son was eager to donate his stuffed animals and a few coins to help them. Given his background, he might have (understandably) been more inclined to hold tightly to his belongings.

I’d like to think the reason for his generous response was the same as that of the early church: “God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all” that nobody in their midst had need (ACTS 4:33–34). The people willingly sold their own possessions to provide for one another’s needs.

When we become aware of the needs of others, whether material or intangible, may God’s grace be so powerfully at work in us that we respond as they did, willingly giving from our hearts to those in need. This makes us vessels of God’s grace as fellow believers in Jesus, “one in heart and mind” (V. 32). KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

이해가 안 될 때

“나는 주님의 계획을 이해할 수 없어요. 나의 온 삶을 주님께 맡겼는데 이런 일이 벌어지다니!” 이것은 어떤 아들이 프로 운동선수로 성공하려는 자신의 꿈이 잠시 틀어졌을 때 그의 어머니에게 보낸 메시지입니다. 우리 중 누가 탄식과 의문이 밀려드는 예상 못한 실망을 경험하지 않은 사람이 있을까요? 가족 중 하나가 아무런 말도 없이 소식을 끊고, 호전되던 건강이 다시 나빠지며, 회사가 예기치 않게 이전을 하고, 삶을 바꾸어 놓는 사건이 일어납니다.

욥기 1-2장은 욥이 연속으로 겪는 삶의 비극과 좌절을 기록합니다. 인간적으로 말해서 세상에 아무런 문제없이 살 사람이 있다면 그것은 욥이었을 것입니다. “그 사람은 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자더라”(욥기 1:1). 하지만 삶은 항상 우리가 원하는 대로 되지 않습니다. 욥에게 뿐만 아니라 우리에게도 그렇습니다. 그의 아내가 “하나님을 욕하고 죽으라”(2:9)고 일렀을 때, 욥이 그녀에게 한 말은 지혜롭고 교훈적이며, 우리가 마주하고 싶지 않은 크고 작은 일이 일어날 때 우리에게도 해당되는 말입니다. “우리가 하나님께 복을 받았은즉 화도 받지 아니하겠느냐 하고 이 모든 일에 욥이 입술로 범죄하지 아니하니라”(10절).

인생의 어려운 시절에 하나님의 일하심을 이해하지 못해도, 하나님의 능력으로 그를 신뢰하고 경외할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

WHEN WE DON’T UNDERSTAND

“I don’t understand His plan. I turned my whole life over to Him. And this happens!” Such was the message of a son to his mother when his dream to succeed as a professional athlete was temporarily derailed. Who among us hasn’t had some kind of unexpected, disappointing experience that sends our minds into overdrive with exclamations and questions? A family member cuts off communication without explanation; health gains are reversed; a company relocates unexpectedly; a life-altering accident happens.

Job 1–2 records a series of tragedies and setbacks in Job’s life. Humanly speaking, if there was anyone who qualified for a life free from trouble, it was Job. “This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil” (JOB 1:1). But life doesn’t always work out the way we’d like it to—it didn’t for Job, and it doesn’t for us. When his wife counseled him to “curse God and die!” (2:9), Job’s words to her were wise, instructive, and fitting for us as well when things happen—big or small—that we’d rather not face. “ ‘Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?’ In all this, Job did not sin in what he said” (V. 10).

By God’s strength, may our trust in and reverence for Him remain, even when we can’t understand how He’s at work during life’s difficult days. ARTHUR JACKSON

사랑의 참된 본질

팬데믹으로 인한 봉쇄 기간에 어쩔 수 없이 피트니스센터를 닫아야 했던 제리는 몇 달 동안 수입이 없었습니다. 하루는 친구에게서 제리의 시설에서 오후 6시에 만나자는 문자를 받았습니다. 제리는 이유를 몰랐지만 그곳으로 갔습니다. 곧 차들이 주차장으로 들어오기 시작했습니다. 첫 번째 차의 운전자가 건물 근처의 인도에 바구니를 놓았습니다. 그 뒤를 이어 (오십 대 가량의) 차들이 계속 들어왔습니다. 차 안에 있던 사람들은 제리에게 손을 흔들거나 큰소리로 안부를 묻고는 그 바구니 앞에 멈춰 카드나 돈을 놓고 갔습니다. 어떤 사람들은 어려운 형편에도 돈을 냈습니다. 이들 모두가 시간을 내어 그를 격려해 주었습니다.

바울 사도에 따르면 사랑의 본질은 희생입니다. 그는 고린도 교인들에게 마게도니아 사람들이 그들의 “힘에 지나도록” 베풀어 사도들과 다른 이들의 필요를 채울 수 있었다고 설명했습니다(고린도후서 8:3). 마게도니아 사람들은 사도들과 하나님의 사람들에게 베풀 기회를 달라고 바울에게 “간곡히 부탁” 하기까지 했습니다. 그들이 헌금한 바탕에는 예수님의 희생하는 마음이 있었습니다. 예수님은 종이 되어 자신의 생명을 주시기 위해 천국의 부요함을 버리고 이 땅에 오셨습니다. “그리스도께서는 부요하나, [우리를] 위해서 가난하게 되셨습니다”(9절, 새번역).

우리도 사랑으로 다른 이들의 필요를 충족시키기 위해 “베푸는 은혜에도 풍성할”(7절) 수 있도록 하나님께 간구하길 바랍니다.

THE TRUE NATURE OF LOVE

During the pandemic lockdown, Jerry was forced to close his fitness center and had no income for months. One day he received a text from a friend asking to meet him at his facility at 6:00 p.m. Jerry wasn’t sure why but made his way there. Soon cars started streaming into the parking lot. The driver in the first car placed a basket on the sidewalk near the building. Then car after car (maybe fifty of them) came by. Those inside waved at Jerry or hollered out a hello, stopped at the basket, and dropped in a card or cash. Some sacrificed their money; all gave their time to encourage him.

The true nature of love is sacrificial, according to the apostle Paul. He explained to the Corinthians that the Macedonians gave “even beyond their ability” so they could meet the needs of the apostles and others (2 CORINTHIANS 8:3). They even “pleaded” with Paul for the opportunity to give to them and to God’s people. The basis for their giving was the sacrificial heart of Jesus Himself. He left the riches of heaven to come to earth to be a servant and to give His very life. “Though he was rich, yet for [our] sake he became poor” (V. 9).

May we too plead with God so that we might “excel in this grace of giving” (V. 7) in order to lovingly meet the needs of others. ANNE CETAS
