어디서 예배하든지

심한 몸살과 두통으로 교회 가족들과 함께하는 예배에 또다시 참석하지 못했습니다. 나는 함께 모여 예배 드리지 못함을 못내 아쉬워하며 온라인 예배를 드렸습니다. 처음에는 여러가지가 불만스러웠습니다. 음향과 화면의 질이 나빠 집중이 잘 안 되었는데, 그때 비디오에서 잘 아는 찬송가가 흘러나왔습니다. 찬송가의 다음 구절을 부르는데 눈물이 흘렀습니다. “내 맘의 주여 소망 되소서. 주 없이 모든 일 헛되어라. 밤에나 낮에나 주님 생각. 잘 때나 깰 때 함께 하소서.” 나는 변함없이 함께하신다는 하나님의 그 선물에 집중하며 거실에 앉아 하나님을 예배했습니다.

성경은 함께 드리는 예배가 중요하고 필수적이라고 분명히 말하지만 (히브리서 10:25) 하나님은 교회 건물 안에만 계시지 않습니다. 예수님은 우물가에서 사마리아 여인과 대화하시면서 메시아에 대한 생각을 완전히 바꾸어놓으셨습니다(요한복음 4:9). 예수님은 우물가에 서있는 그 여인을 정죄하지 않고 진리를 말씀하시며 사랑하셨습니다(10절). 그리고 주님의 자녀들의 은밀한 부분까지도 다 아신다는 것을 보여주셨습니다(17-18절). 자신이 하나님이심을 드러내신 예수님은 성령께서 어느 특정한 물리적인 장소가 아니라 하나님 백성의 마음 안에서 진정한 예배를 불러일으키신다고 말씀하셨습니다(23-24절).

하나님 자신에게, 그리고 그가 하신 일과 약속하신 모든 것에 초점을 맞춘다면, 다른 믿는 사람들과 함께하거나 우리 집 거실이거나, 그 어느 곳에서 하나님을 예배하든 그분이 변함없이 우리와 함께 하시는 것을 기뻐할 수 있습니다.

WHEREVER WE WORSHIP

Intense pain and a debilitating headache prevented me from attending services with my local church family . . . again. Grieving the loss of community worship, I watched an online sermon. At first, complaints soured my experience. The poor sound and video quality distracted me. But then a voice on the video warbled a familiar hymn. Tears flowed as I sang these words: “Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart. Naught be all else to me save that Thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night. Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.” Focusing on the gift of God’s constant presence, I worshiped Him while sitting in my living room.

While Scripture affirms the vital, essential nature of corporate worship (HEBREWS 10:25), God’s not bound within the walls of a church building. During Jesus’ chat with the Samaritan woman at the well, He defied all expectations of the Messiah (JOHN 4:9). Instead of condemnation, Jesus spoke truth and loved her as she stood next to that well (V. 10). He revealed His intimate and sovereign knowledge of His children (VV. 17–18). Proclaiming His deity, Jesus declared that the Holy Spirit evoked true worship from the hearts of God’s people, not from a specific physical location (VV. 23–24).

When we focus on who God is, what He’s done, and all He’s promised, we can rejoice in His constant presence as we worship Him with other believers, in our living rooms . . . and everywhere! - XOCHITL DIXON

점점 줄어가는 것들

목이 간지럽기 시작했습니다. 심상치 않다고 생각했는데, 그 간지럼은 독감 때문으로 밝혀졌습니다. 독감은 기관지염으로 진행되었고, 다시 백일해를 일으키더니 마침내 폐렴이 생겼습니다.

8주간 온몸을 고문하는 듯한 기침을 하면서 나는 점차 겸손해졌습니다. ‘백일해’는 쉬운 병이 아니었습니다. 나는 늙었다고 생각하지는 않지만 이제는
나이를 생각할 때가 되었습니다. 내가 속한 교회 소그룹의 한 사람은 나이가 들면서 우리를 위협하는 건강 문제들에 대해 “점점 줄어가는 것들”이라는 재미 있는 이름을 붙였습니다. 하지만 쇠약해지는 일이 실제로 “일어나는” 것은 전혀 재미 있지 않습니다.

바울도 고린도후서 4장에서 그 나름대로 “점점 줄어가는 것들”에 관해 기록하였습니다. 그 장에는 그와 그의 동료들이 견뎌낸 박해가 순차적으로 기록되어 있습니다. 그는 사명을 완수하기 위해 큰 희생을 치르면서 “우리의 겉사람은 낡아진다”는 것을 시인했습니다. 그러나 나이가 들고 박해와 험난한 상황들로 몸이 쇠약해져도 바울은 “우리의 속사람은 날로 새로워진다”(16절) 는 한결같은 소망을 굳게 붙잡았습니다. 그는 이런 “일시적인 가벼운 고난” 은 앞으로 올 “비교할 수 없을 정도로 영원하고 크나큰 영광”과 비교할 수 없다고 했습니다(17절, 새번역).

오늘 밤 글을 쓰고 있는 이 시간에도 그 ‘쇠약하게 하는 것들’ 때문에 가슴에 통증이 떠나지 않고 있습니다. 그러나 나는 내 삶이나 그리스도를 붙들고 있는 사람들의 삶에서 그것들이 최종적인 것이 아니라는 것을 압니다.

THE DWINDLES

It started with a tickle in my throat. Uh oh, I thought. That tickle turned out to be influenza. And that was just the beginning of bronchial affliction. Influenza morphed into whooping cough—yes, that whooping cough—and that turned into pneumonia.

Eight weeks of torso-wracking coughing—it’s not called whooping cough for nothing—has left me humbled. I don’t think of myself as old. But I’m old enough to start thinking about heading in that direction. A member of my small group at church has a funny name for the health issues that assail us as we age: “the dwindles.” But there’s nothing funny about dwindling’s work “in action.”

In 2 Corinthians 4, Paul too wrote—in his own way—about “the dwindles.” That chapter chronicles the persecution he and his team endured. Fulfilling his mission had taken a heavy toll: “Outwardly we are wasting away,” he admitted. But even as his body failed— from age, persecution, and harsh conditions—Paul held tightly to his sustaining hope: “Inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (V. 16). These “light and momentary troubles,” he insisted, can’t compare to what awaits: “an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (V. 17).

Even as I write tonight, the dwindles claw insistently at my chest. But I know that in my life and that of anyone who clings to Christ, they’ll not have the last word. - ADAM R. HOLZ

사춘기 신앙

십대 시절은 때때로 부모와 자식 모두에게 인생에서 가장 어려운 시기입니다. 나는 사춘기 시절 어머니로부터 ‘벗어나려고’, 어머니의 가치관이나 규칙의 목적이 단지 나를 비참하게 만들 뿐이라고 의심하고는 공공연히 어머니의 가치관을 거부하고 어머니의 규칙에 반항하였습니다. 그 이후로 어머니와 나는 생각이 같아졌지만, 그 당시 우리의 관계는 긴장의 연속이었습니다. 나의 불필요한 정서적, 육체적 고통을 피할 수 있는 지혜가 담긴 어머니의 가르침을 내가 들으려 하지 않는 것을 어머니는 분명 슬퍼하셨습니다.

하나님은 그의 자녀 이스라엘에 대해 같은 마음을 품으셨습니다. 하나님은 우리가 알고 있는 십계명(신명기 5:7-21) 안에 삶의 지혜를 담아 주셨습니다. 십계명은 규칙들만 한데 모아 놓은 것처럼 보일 수도 있지만, 하나님의 의도는 모세에게 “그들과 그 자손이 영원히 복받기를 원하노라”(29 절)라고 하신 말씀에서 분명히 나타납니다. 하나님이 원하시는 바를 잘 알았던 모세는 그들이 계명에 순종하면 약속의 땅에서 하나님이 그들과 계속 함께 하시는 기쁨을 누리게 될 것이라고 말했습니다(33절).

우리 모두는 하나님의 삶의 지침이 진정으로 우리의 유익을 위한 것이라고 믿지 않는, 하나님과의 관계에서 “사춘기”를 겪습니다. 우리가 하나님이 우리에게 가장 좋은 것을 주기를 원하신다는 것을 깨달을 만큼 성숙해지고, 또 하나님이 주시는 지혜에 귀 기울이는 법을 배울 수 있기를 소망합니다. 하나님의 인도하심은 우리가 더욱 예수님을 닮아가는 영적 성숙에 이르게 하려는 것입니다(시편 119:97-104; 에베소서 4:15; 베드로후서 3:18).

ADOLESCENT FAITH

The teenage years are sometimes among the most agonizing seasons in life—for both parent and child. In my adolescent quest to “individuate” from my mother, I openly rejected her values and rebelled against her rules, suspicious their purposes were merely to make me miserable. Though we’ve since come to agree on those matters, that time in our relationship was riddled with tension. Mom undoubtedly lamented my refusal to heed the wisdom of her instructions, knowing they would spare me unnecessary emotional and physical pain.

God had the same heart for His children, Israel. God imparted His wisdom for living in what we know as the Ten Commandments (DEUTERONOMY 5:7–21). Though they could be viewed as a list of rules, God’s intention is evident in His words to Moses: “so that it might go well with them and their children forever!” (V. 29). Moses recognized God’s desire, saying that obedience to the decrees would result in their enjoyment of His ongoing presence with them in the promised land (V. 33).

We all go through a season of “adolescence” with God, not trusting that His guidelines for living are truly meant for our good. May we grow into the realization that He wants what’s best for us and learn to heed the wisdom He offers. His guidance is meant to lead us into spiritual maturity as we become more like Jesus (PSALM 119:97–104; EPHESIANS 4:15; 2 PETER 3:18). - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

당신의 이름은 무엇입니까?

우리는 부모님이 지어준 이름, 다른 사람들이 붙여주는 이름(우리의 명성), 그리고 우리가 자신에게 주는 이름(우리의 성품), 이 세 가지 이름을 갖고 살아간다고 누군가가 말했습니다. “많은 재물보다 명예를 택할 것이요 은이나 금보다 은총을 더욱 택할 것이니라”(잠언 22:1) 라는 말씀처럼 다른 사람들이 우리에게 붙여주는 이름은 중요합니다. 그러나 명성도 중요하지만 성품은 더 중요합니다.

그런데 그보다 더 중요한 또 다른 이름이 있습니다. 예수님은 버가모의 그리스도인들에게 비록 그들의 명성에 꽤 심한 타격은 있었지만, 유혹과 싸워 이기는 사람들을 위해 하늘에 새 이름을 예비해 두셨다고 말씀하셨습니다. “이기는 그에게는 내가... 흰 돌을 줄 터인데 그 돌 위에 새 이름을 기록한 것이 있나니 받는 자 밖에는 그 이름을 알 사람이 없느니라”(요한계시록 2:17).

예수님이 왜 흰 돌을 약속하셨는지 우리는 모릅니다. 이긴 것에 대한 상일까요? 아니면 메시아의 잔치에 들어갈 수 있는 징표일까요? 아마도 흰 돌은
한때 배심원들이 무죄 판결을 위해 사용했던 것과 비슷하기도 하지만, 우리는 그냥 모를 뿐입니다. 하지만 그것이 무엇이든, 하나님은 우리의 새 이름이 우리의 수치를 씻어줄 것이라고 약속하십니다(이사야 62:1-5 참조).

우리의 명성은 갈가리 찢길 수 있고, 성품을 바꾸는 것도 어려울 수 있습니다. 그러나 그런 이름들 어느 것도 궁극적으로 우리를 규정 짓지 못합니다. 다른 사람들이 당신을 뭐라고 부르든, 심지어 당신이 자신을 뭐라고 부르든, 중요한 것은 그것이 아닙니다. 당신은 예수님이 누구라고 말씀하시는 그런 사람입니다. 그 새로운 이름에 맞게 사십시오.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME?

Someone said we go through life with three names: the name our parents gave us, the name others give us (our reputation), and the name we give ourselves (our character). The name others give us matters, as “a good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold” (PROVERBS 22:1). But while reputation is important, character matters more.

There’s yet another name that’s even more important. Jesus told the Christians in Pergamum that though their reputation had suffered some well-deserved hits, He had a new name reserved in heaven for those who fight back and conquer temptation. “To the one who is victorious, I will give . . . a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it” (REVELATION 2:17).

We aren’t sure why Jesus promised a white stone. Is it an award for winning? A token for admission to the messianic banquet? Perhaps it’s similar to what jurors once used to vote for acquittal. We simply don’t know. Whatever it is, God promises our new name will wipe away our shame (SEE ISAIAH 62:1–5).

Our reputation may be tattered, and our character may be seemingly beyond repair. But neither name ultimately defines us. It’s not what others call you nor even what you call yourself that matters. You are who Jesus says you are. Live into your new name. - MIKE WITTMER

우리에게 필요한 모든 것

나는 식탁에 앉아 내 주위의 소란스럽지만 행복한 광경을 지긋이 바라보았습니다. 이모와 고모, 삼촌들, 사촌들, 조카들 모두가 함께 모여 즐겁게 음식을 먹고 있었습니다. 나도 물론 기쁜 마음으로 그 시간을 즐기고 있었습니다. 그러다가 불현듯 ‘모인 사람들 중 나만 아이가 없고, 내 가족이라고 부를 수 있는 사람도 없는 여자구나’ 하는 생각이 가슴을 찔렀습니다.

나와 유사한 경험을 한 미혼 여성들이 많을 것입니다. 결혼과 아이가 상당히 중요시되는 내가 속한 아시아권 문화에서 자신의 가족이 없다는 것은 무언가 불완전하다는 느낌을 갖게 합니다. 내가 누구인가를 규정하고 나를 온전하게 해주는 그 무언가가 결핍되어 있다는 느낌을 갖게 하는 것입니다.

그렇기 때문에 하나님께서 나의 “분깃”이 되신다는 이 진리의 말씀이 내게는 너무도 큰 위로가 됩니다 (시편 73:26) . 이스라엘 족속들이 땅을 분배 받았을 때, 제사장 족속인 레위 지파는 아무것도 받지 못했습니다. 그 대신 하나님께서 친히 그들의 분깃이요 기업이 되어 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다
(신명기 10:9) . 레위 족속은 하나님 안에서 온전히 만족할 수 있었고 하나님이 그들의 모든 필요를 채워주실 것을 신뢰할 수 있었습니다.

가족과는 관련 없는 다른 일로 무언가 부족하다는 느낌을 갖는 분들도 있을 것입니다. 더 나은 직장이나 더 높은 학업 성취를 열망하는 것일 수도 있습니다. 어떤 상황이든지 상관없이 우리는 하나님을 우리의 분깃으로 받아들일 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리를 온전케 하시며, 그분 안에서 우리에게 부족함이란 없습니다.

ALL THAT YOU NEED

Seated at the dining room table, I gazed at the happy chaos around me. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews were enjoying the food and being together at our family reunion. I was enjoying it all, too. But one thought pierced my heart: You’re the only woman here with no children, with no family to call your own.

Many single women like me have similar experiences. In my culture, an Asian culture where marriage and children are highly valued, not having a family of one’s own can bring a sense of incompleteness. It can feel like you’re lacking something that defines who you are and makes you whole.

That’s why the truth of God being my “portion” is so comforting to me (PSALM 73:26) . When the tribes of Israel were given their allotments of land, the priestly tribe of Levi was assigned none. Instead, God promised that He Himself would be their portion and inheritance (DEUTERONOMY 10:9) . They could find complete satisfaction in Him and trust Him to supply their every need.

For some of us, the sense of lack may have nothing to do with family. Perhaps we yearn for a better job or higher academic achievement. Regardless of our circumstances, we can embrace God as our portion. He makes us whole. In Him, we have no lack.

배움의 즐거움

인도 마이소르 시에는 열차 차량을 개조해서 두 개를 일렬로 연결해 만든 학교가 있습니다. 현지 교육전문가들이 사우스웨스턴 철도 회사와 협력하여 버려진 객차들을 매입해서 개조한 것입니다. 인부들이 계단과 환풍구, 조명과 책상을 설치할 때까지 이 객차들은 사실상 아무 쓸모없는 커다란 철제 상자에 불과했습니다. 인부들은 또한 벽에 페인트를 칠하고 차량의 안팎으로 화려한 벽화를 그려 넣었습니다. 이 놀라운 변화를 거친 덕분에 현재 그곳에서 60명의 학생들이 수업을 받고 있습니다.

우리가 “마음을 새롭게 하여 변화를 받으라” (로마서 12:2) 고 한 바울 사도의 명령을 따를 때에는 이보다 더 놀라운 일이 일어납니다. 성령을 따라 세상과 세상의 방식에서 구별될 때 우리의 생각과 태도가 바뀌기 시작합니다. 우리는 보다 사랑스럽고, 보다 희망적이며, 내적 평안으로 가득 차게 됩니다
(8:6) .

그 외에 다른 일도 일어납니다. 비록 이 변화의 과정이 아직 진행 중이며 종종 열차보다 더 자주 가다 서다를 반복하기도 하지만, 이 과정은 하나님이 우리 삶에서 무엇을 원하시는지를 알 수 있도록 도와줍니다. 이 과정은 “하 나님의 뜻을 아는 법을 배우게 될” (12:2) 곳으로 우리를 데려갑니다. 하나님의 뜻을 아는 데 있어 특별한 어떤 것이 필요할 수도 있겠지만, 언제나 하나님의 성품과 이 세상에서의 그분의 사역에 우리가 보조를 맞추는 것이 필요합니다.

그 개조된 열차 학교의 이름은 ‘날리 칼리’, 영어로는 “배움의 즐거움” 이라는 뜻입니다. 하나님의 변화시키는 능력은 하나님의 뜻을 즐겁게 배울 수 있도록 우리를 어떻게 이끌고 있습니까?

JOYFUL LEARNING

In the city of Mysore, India, there’s a school made of two refurbished train cars connected end-to-end. Local educators teamed up with the South Western Railway Company to buy and remodel the discarded coaches. The units were essentially large metal boxes, unusable until workers installed stairways, fans, lights, and desks. Workers also painted the walls and added colorful murals inside and out. Now, sixty students attend classes there because of the amazing transformation that took place.

Something even more amazing takes place when we follow the apostle Paul’s command to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (ROMANS 12:2) . As we allow the Holy Spirit to uncouple us from the world and its ways, our thoughts and attitudes begin to change. We become more loving, more hopeful, and filled with inner peace (8:6) .

Something else happens too. Although this transformation process is ongoing, and often has more stops and starts than a train ride, the process helps us understand what God wants for our lives. It takes us to a place where we “will learn to know God’s will” (12:2 NLT) . Learning His will may or may not involve specifics, but it always involves aligning ourselves with His character and His work in the world.

이가봇의 도피

‘ 슬리피 할로우의 전설’에서 저자 워싱턴 어빙은 아름다운 여인 카트리나 와 결혼하고 싶어 하는 학교 선생님 이가봇 크레인의 이야기를 해줍니다. 이 이야기의 핵심은 식민지 지역의 시골 마을을 맴도는 머리가 없는 마부입니다. 어느 날 밤 이가봇은 말을 타고 있는 그 유령을 만나고 겁에 질려 그 지역을 도망칩니다. 독자들은 그 “마부”가 바로 카트리나를 사랑하여 결국 결혼하게 되는 이가봇의 연적임을 명백히 알 수 있습니다.

이가봇이라는 이름은 성경에서 처음 등장하는데, 성경에도 그 이름에 우울한 배경이 담겨 있습니다. 블레셋과의 전쟁 중에 이스라엘은 신성한 언약궤를 전쟁터로 가지고 갔습니다. 가져가지 말아야 했던 것입니다. 이스라엘의 군대는 패배했고, 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼으며, 제사장 엘리의 두 아들, 홉니와 비느하스도 죽었습니다 (사무엘상 4:17) . 엘리 제사장도 죽게 됩니다 (18절) . 임신하여 해산할 때가 가까웠던 비느하스의 아내는 그 소식을 듣고 “갑자기 아파서 몸을 구푸려 해산하고 죽어 갈 때에” (19절) 마지막 말로 그의 아들의 이름을 이가봇(“영광이 떠났다”는 뜻)이라고 했습니다. “영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다” (22절) 고 하면서 마지막 숨을 거둔 것입니다.

감사하게도 하나님은 훨씬 큰 이야기를 보여주십니다. 하나님의 영광은 궁극적으로 예수님을 통해 나타났으며, 예수님은 “[아버지께서 내게 주신 영광을 내가 그들에게 주었다” (요한복음 17:22) 고 제자들에 대해 말씀하셨습니다.

오늘날 하나님의 궤가 어디에 있는지는 아무도 모릅니다. 하지만 상관없습니다. 이가봇은 도망하였지만, 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리에게 그분의 영광을 주셨습니다!

FLIGHT OF ICHABOD

In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving tells of Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher who seeks to marry a beautiful young woman named Katrina. Key to the story is a headless horseman who haunts the colonial countryside. One night, Ichabod encounters a ghostly apparition on horseback and flees the region in terror. It’s clear to the reader that this “horseman” is actually a rival suitor for Katrina, who then marries her.

Ichabod is a name first seen in the Bible, and it too has a gloomy backstory. While at war with the Philistines, Israel carried the sacred ark of the covenant into battle. Bad move. Israel’s army was routed and the ark captured. Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of the high priest Eli, were killed (1 SAMUEL 4:17) . Eli too would die (V. 18) . When the pregnant wife of Phinehas heard the news, “she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains” (V. 19) . With her last words she named her son Ichabod (literally, “no glory”). “The Glory has departed from Israel,” she gasped (V. 22) .

Thankfully, God was unfolding a much larger story. His glory would ultimately be revealed in Jesus, who said of His disciples, “I have given them the glory that you [the Father] gave me” (JOHN 17:22) .

No one knows where the ark is today, but no matter. Ichabod has fled. Through Jesus, God has given us His very glory!

무한하신 분

작업 마감 날짜가 다가오자 몸이 긴장되어 굳어지고 배는 쥐어짜는 듯 아픈 가운데 쇼핑몰 안 푸드코트에 앉아 있습니다. 내가 햄버거 봉지를 벗기고 한 입 물을 때 주위의 사람들 역시 급한 일로 분주히 왔다 갔다 합니다. ‘시간, 에너지, 능력 면에서 우리 모두 얼마나 제한된 존재들인가’ 라고 혼자 생각해 봅니다.

해야 할 일의 목록을 급한 것부터 우선순위를 매겨 작성하려고 펜을 꺼내자 다른 생각이 떠오릅니다. 바로 영원하시고 제한이 없으셔서 하고자 하시는 모든 일을 애쓰지 않고 다 하실 수 있는 그분 생각입니다.

이 하나님은 손바닥으로 바닷물을 헤아리시며 땅의 티끌을 되에 담으시는 분이라고 이사야는 말합니다 (이사야 40:12) . 그분은 하늘의 별들의 이름을 부르시고 그들의 길을 운행하시며 (26절) , 세상의 주관자들을 알고 그들의 행위를 지켜보시며 (23절) , 섬들을 먼지 얼룩처럼, 나라들을 바다의 물방울처럼 여기십니다 (15절) . 하나님께서 “너희가 나를 누구에게 비교하겠느냐”라고 물으시자 (25절) 이사야는 이렇게 대답합니다. “영원하신 하나님 여호와는... 피곤하지 않으시며 곤비하지 않으십니다” (28절) .

스트레스와 긴장은 결코 좋은 것이 아니지만, 이 날에 강력한 교훈을 전해주고 있습니다. 무한하신 하나님은 우리와 같지 않으시며, 원하시는 모든 것을 이루십니다. 햄버거를 다 먹고, 한번 더 멈추어 봅니다. 그리고 조용히 경배를 드립니다.

UNLIMITED

There I am, sitting in the shopping mall food court, my body tense and my stomach knotted over looming work deadlines. As I unwrap my burger and take a bite, people rush around me, fretting over their own tasks. How limited we all are, I think to myself, limited in time, energy, and capacity.

I consider writing a new to-do list and prioritizing the urgent tasks, but as I pull out a pen another thought enters my mind: a thought of One who is infinite and unlimited, who effortlessly accomplishes all that He desires.

This God, Isaiah says, can measure the oceans in the hollow of His hand and collect the dust of the earth in a basket (ISAIAH 40:12) . He names the stars of the heavens and directs their path (V. 26) , knows the rulers of the world and oversees their careers (V. 23) , considers islands mere specks of dust and the nations like drops in the sea (V. 15) . “To whom will you compare me?” He asks (V. 25) . “The Lord is the everlasting God,” Isaiah replies. “He will not grow tired or weary” (V. 28) .

Stress and strain are never good for us, but on this day they deliver a powerful lesson. The unlimited God is not like me. He accomplishes everything He wishes. I finish my burger, and then pause once more. And silently worship.

잘 쉬는 것

시계가 새벽 1시 55분을 깜박이고 있었습니다. 늦은 밤에 나누었던 문자 대화가 계속 생각나 잠이 오질 않았습니다. 미라처럼 엉켜 있는 이불을 풀어 가만히 소파에 펼치고는 다시 잠드는 요령을 구글에서 찾아보았지만, 하지 말아야 할 것들에 대한 정보만 눈에 띄었습니다. 낮잠을 자거나 카페인을 섭취하지 말라, 늦은 오후에 운동을 해서는 안된다, 등등. ‘통과.’ 태블릿으로 계속 읽어가는데 늦은 시각까지 “스크린 타임”을 가져서는 안된다는 조언도 보게 됐습니다. ‘아이쿠.’ 밤늦은 시각의 문자 대화가 좋은 생각이 아니었던 것입니다. 잘 쉬기 위해서는 이렇게 하지 말아야 할 일들이 있습니다.

구약에서는 하나님이 휴식을 위해 안식일에 하지 말아야 할 규칙들을 주셨고, 신약에서는 예수님이 새로운 길을 제시해 주셨습니다. 예수님은 규칙들을 강조하시기보다는 제자들에게 그들과의 관계를 강조하셨습니다. “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라” (마태복음 11:28) . 이전 구절에서 예수님은 주님이 우리에게 보여주신 하나님 아버지와 하나라는 지속적인 관계를 언급하셨습니다. 예수님이 하나님 아버지로부터 지속적으로 누리셨던 도움을 우리도 똑같이 경험할 수 있습니다.

잠을 방해하는 활동들은 피하는 게 현명하지만, 그리스도 안에서 잘 쉬는 것은 규칙보다는 관계와 더 관련이 있습니다. 나는 읽던 것을 끄고, 내 마음의 짐을 예수님의 “내게로 오라”고 초대하는 베개 위에 내려놓았습니다.

REST WELL

The clock blinked 1:55 a.m. Burdened by a late-night text conversation, sleep wasn’t coming. I unwound the mummy-like clutch of my tangled sheets and padded quietly to the couch. I Googled what to do to fall asleep but instead found what not to do: don’t take a nap or drink caffeine or work out late in the day. Check. Reading further on my tablet, I was advised not to use “screen time” late either. Oops. Texting hadn’t been a good idea. When it comes to resting well, there are lists of what not to do.

In the Old Testament, God handed down rules regarding what not to do on the Sabbath in order to embrace rest. In the New Testament, Jesus offered a new way. Rather than stressing regulations, Jesus called the disciples into relationship. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (MATTHEW 11:28) . In the preceding verse, Jesus pointed to His own ongoing relationship of oneness with His Father—the One He’s revealed to us. The provision of ongoing help Jesus enjoyed from the Father is one we can experience as well.

While we’re wise to avoid certain pastimes that can interrupt our sleep, resting well in Christ has more to do with relationship than regulation. I clicked my reader off and laid my burdened heart down on the pillow of Jesus’ invitation: “Come to me . . .”

우리의 감정을 아시는 하나님

시에라는 아들이 중독을 끊으려고 싸우는 모습을 고통스럽게 지켜보며 감정을 주체할 수 없었습니다. 그녀는 말했습니다. “못 견디겠어요. 하나님은 내가 기도하며 울음을 멈추지 못하는 것을 보시고 믿음이 없다고 생각하실까요?”

내가 말했습니다. “저도 하나님께서 어떻게 생각하실지는 몰라요. 하지만 하나님은 우리의 진짜 감정들을 처리해 주실 수 있는 분이라는 것을 알아요. 하나님은 우리가 느끼는 것을 모르시는 분이 아니에요.” 나는 시에라와 함께 기도하고 눈물을 흘리며 그녀의 아들이 중독에서 풀려나기를 간절히
구했습니다.

성경은 힘든 시기를 겪으며 하나님과 씨름하는 사람들의 예를 많이 보여줍니다. 시편 42편의 저자는 끊임없이 강력히 역사하시는 하나님의 임재가 주는 평화를 경험하고자 하는 절절한 갈망을 표현합니다. 저자는 자신이 슬픔을 견디면서 눈물을 흘렸고 우울했음을 고백하면서, 정신적인 불안정이 오면
하나님의 신실함을 되새기며 자신 있는 찬양으로 안정을 되찾습니다. 자신의 “영혼”을 격려하며 시편 기자는 이렇게 씁니다. “너는 네 희망을 하나님께 두어라. 나는 내 구원이 되시는 하나님을 찬양하리라” (11절, 현대인의 성경) . 그는 자신이 옳다고 알고 있는 하나님과 자신의 감당키 어려운 감정이라는 부인할 수 없는 현실 사이에서 씨름했습니다.

GOD KNOWS WE FEEL

Feeling overwhelmed, Sierra grieved her son’s fight with addiction. “I feel bad,” she said. “Does God think I have no faith because I can’t stop crying when I’m praying?” “I don’t know what God thinks,” I said. “But I know He can handle real emotions. It’s not like He doesn’t know we feel.” I prayed and shed tears with Sierra as we pleaded for her son’s deliverance.

Scripture contains many examples of people wrestling with God while struggling. The writer of Psalm 42 expresses a deep longing to experience the peace of God’s constant and powerful presence. He acknowledges his tears and his depression over the grief he’s endured. His inner turmoil ebbs and flows with confident praises, as he reminds himself of God’s faithfulness. Encouraging his “soul,” the psalmist writes, “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (V. 11) . He’s tugged back and forth between what he knows to be true about God and the undeniable reality of his overwhelming emotions.

God designed us in His image and with emotions. Our tears for others reveal deep love and compassion, not necessarily a lack of faith. We can approach God with raw wounds or old scars because He knows we feel. Each prayer, whether silent, sobbed, or shouted with confidence, demonstrates our trust in His promise to hear and care for us.
