무엇에든지

매주 금요일 저녁, 우리 가족이 시청하는 뉴스 프로그램은 우리에게 희망을 주는 이야기로 방송을 마칩니다. 다른 뉴스와 달리, 이런 뉴스를 접하면 언제나 상쾌한 공기를 마시는 느낌이 듭니다. 최근 금요일의 “좋은” 뉴스는 코로나바이러스 감염증으로 고생했던 어느 기자에 대한 이야기였습니다. 이제 완전히 회복된 그 기자는 바이러스와 싸우고 있는 다른 사람들을 돕기 위해 자신의 혈장을 기부하기로 결심했습니다. 그 당시 항체가 얼마나 효과적일지는 논란이 있었지만, 많은 사람들이 이 상황에 무력감을 느끼고, 또 주사바늘을 꽂아 혈장을 기부하는 불편함에도, 그 기자는 “그것이 가져다줄 잠재적 성과를 생각하면 그저 작은 대가를 치르는 정도로” 느껴진다고 말했습니다.

그 금요일 방송이 끝나고 우리 가족은 용기를 얻었고 희망으로 가득 차기까지 했습니다. 그것은 빌립보서 4장에서 바울이 이야기했던 “무엇에든지” 의 힘이었습니다: “무엇에든지 참되며 무엇에든지 경건하며 무엇에든지 옳으며 무엇에든지 정결하며 무엇에든지 사랑받을 만하며 무엇에든지 칭찬받을
만하며” (8절) . 바울이 혈장 기부를 생각했을까요? 물론 아닙니다. 아니면, 어려운 사람들을 위한 희생의 행위, 다시 말해 그리스도를 닮은 행동을 염두에 두고 있었을까요? 나는 ‘그렇다’고 믿어 의심치 않습니다.

하지만 그 희망적인 뉴스는 방송되지 않았으면 파급효과가 크지 않았을 것입니다. 우리 주위에 있는 “무엇에든지”의 소식을 잘 보고 들어서 그것을 다른 사람들과 나누며 격려해주는 것은 하나님의 선하심을 증거하는 증인된 우리의 특권입니다.

THE WHATEVERS

Every Friday evening, the national news my family views concludes the broadcast by highlighting an uplifting story. In contrast to the rest of the news, it’s always a breath of fresh air. A recent “good” Friday story focused on a reporter who had suffered from COVID-19, fully recovered, and then decided to donate plasma to possibly help others in their fight against the virus. At the time, the jury was still out on how effective antibodies would be. But when many of us felt helpless and even in light of the discomfort of donating plasma (via needle), she felt it “was a small price to pay for the potential payoff.”

After that Friday broadcast, my family and I felt encouraged— dare I say hope-filled. That’s the power of the “whatevers” Paul described in Philippians 4: “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable” (V. 8) . Did Paul have in mind plasma donation? Of course not. But did he have in mind sacrificial actions on behalf of someone in need—in other words, Christlike behavior? I’ve no doubt the answer is yes.

But that hopeful news wouldn’t have had its full effect if it hadn’t been broadcast. It’s our privilege as witnesses to God’s goodness to look and listen for the “whatevers” all around us and then share that good news with others that they may be encouraged.

자유롭게 기뻐 뛰노는

삼대째 농부인 짐은 “내 이름을 경외하는 너희는... 나가서 외양간에서 나온 송아지 같이 뛰리라”라는 말라기 4장 2절 말씀을 읽고 큰 감동을 받아 예수님이 주시는 영생을 얻기 위해 기도했습니다. 자기 집에 있는 송아지들이 외양간에 갇혀 있다가 밖으로 나갈 때 기뻐 날뛰던 모습을 생생하게 기억하면서, 짐은 마침내 하나님께서 주시는 진정한 자유의 약속을 이해한 것입니다.

선지자가 하나님의 이름을 경외하고 그분께 신실했던 사람들과 자기 자신만을 신뢰했던 사람들을 대비한, 말라기 4장에 나온 이미지에 대해 이야기하고 있을 때 짐의 딸이 이 이야기를 해주었습니다 (4:1-2) . 종교 지도자들을 포함하여 너무도 많은 사람들이 하나님을 경시하고 신앙적 삶의 기준들을 무시하던 그때, 말라기는 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님을 따르라고 권면했습니다 (1:12-14; 3:5-9) . 그는 하나님이 마지막 날 이 두 부류를 최종적으로 구별하실 것이기 때문에 백성들에게 신실하게 살라고 요구했습니다. 이 문맥에서 말라기는 송아지가 기뻐 뛰노는 예상치 못한 상상력을 발휘하여, “공의로운 해가 떠올라서 치료하는 광선을 비추는” (4:2) 그날, 신실한 사람들이 경험하게 될 말할 수 없는 기쁨을 설명했습니다.

FROLICKING IN FREEDOM

A third-generation farmer, Jim was so moved when he read “You who revere my name . . . will go out and frolic like wellfed calves” (MALACHI 4:2) that he prayed to receive Jesus’ offer of eternal life. Vividly recalling his own calves’ leaps of excitement after exiting their confined stalls at high speed, Jim finally understood God’s promise of true freedom.

Jim’s daughter told me this story because we’d been discussing the imagery in Malachi 4, where the prophet made a distinction between those who revered God’s name, or remained faithful to Him, and those who only trusted in themselves (4:1–2) . The prophet was encouraging the Israelites to follow God at a time when so many, including the religious leaders, disregarded God and His standards for faithful living (1:12–14; 3:5–9) . Malachi called the people to live faithfully because of a coming time when God would make the final distinction between these two groups. In this context, Malachi used the unexpected imagery of a frolicking calf to describe the unspeakable joy that the faithful group will experience when “the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays” (4:2) .

Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of this promise, bringing the good news that true freedom is available to all people (LUKE 4:16–21) . And one day, in God’s renewed and restored creation, we’ll experience this freedom fully. What indescribable joy it will be to frolic there!

절대로 잘못 알아듣지 않음

가정에서 사용하는 스마트 기기들에 내재되어 있는 알렉사나 시리 같은 음성 보조장치는 가끔씩 우리가 하는 말을 잘못 알아듣습니다. 여섯 살 된 어린아이가 집에 있는 새로운 기기에 대고 과자와 인형집에 대해 얘기했는데, 나중에 아이 엄마는 7파운드의 과자와 170달러의 인형집이 배달되고 있다는 이메일을 받았습니다. 런던의 어떤 가정에서는 주인이 온라인으로 물건을 사본 적이 전혀 없었는데, 말하는 앵무새가 주인 모르게 금으로 된 선물 박스 패키지를 주문한 일도 있었습니다. 또 어떤 사람은 기기에게 “거실 불을 켜라”고 했더니 “푸딩 방은 없습니다”라는 대답을 들었습니다.

그러나 우리가 하나님께 이야기할 때 하나님이 그렇게 잘못 알아듣는 경우는 전혀 없습니다. 하나님께서 결코 혼동하지 않으시는 이유는 우리 마음을 우리보다 더 잘 아시기 때문입니다. 성령님은 우리의 마음을 살필 뿐 아니라 하나님의 뜻도 이해하십니다. 바울 사도는 로마에 있는 교회들에게 하나님께서 우리를 성숙시켜 그분의 아들 예수님을 더욱 닮게 하겠다는 그분의 선한 목적을 이루시겠다고 약속하신다고 말했습니다 (로마서 8:28-29) . “우리의 연약함” 때문에 우리가 성장하기 위해 무엇이 필요한지 모를 때조차도 성령님은 하나님의 뜻에 따라 우리를 위해 기도하십니다 (26-27절) .

하나님께 어떤 말을 해야 할지 고민되고, 무엇을 어떻게 기도해야 할지 모르겠습니까? 속마음을 진심으로 말해보십시오. 성령님은 하나님의 목적을 이해하고 그것을 이루실 것입니다.

NO MISUNDERSTANDING

Alexa, Siri, and other voice assistants embedded in smart devices in our homes occasionally misunderstand what we’re saying. A six-year-old talked to her family’s new device about cookies and a dollhouse. Later her mom received an email saying that an order of seven pounds of cookies and a $170 dollhouse were on their way to her home. Even a talking parrot in London, whose owner had never bought anything online, somehow ordered a package of golden gift boxes without her knowledge. One person asked their device to “turn on the living room lights,” and it replied, “There is no pudding room.”

There’s no such misunderstanding on God’s part when we talk with Him. He’s never confused, because He knows our hearts better than we do. The Spirit both searches our hearts and understands God’s will. The apostle Paul told the churches in Rome that God promises He’ll accomplish His good purpose of maturing us and making us more like His Son (ROMANS 8:28-29) . Even when because of “our weakness” we don’t know what we need in order to grow, the Spirit prays according to God’s will for us (VV. 26–27) .

Troubled about how to express yourself to God? Not understanding what or how to pray? Say what you can from the heart. The Spirit will understand and accomplish God’s purpose.

진실, 거짓말, 그리고 감시꾼들

2018년 야구시즌에 시카고 컵스 코치가 덕아웃 옆에 앉아있는 소년에게 야구공을 주려고 공을 던졌지만 어떤 한 남자가 그 공을 잡아챘습니다. 이 영상이 순식간에 퍼지면서 뉴스 매체와 소셜미디어들은 그 남자의 “야비한 짓”을 꼬집었습니다. 하지만 이 영상을 봤던 사람들은 그 전후 사정을 알지 못했습니다. 초반에 이 남자가 파울 타구 공을 잡아서 소년에게 줬고, 또다시 그쪽으로 오는 공들이 있으면 서로 나눠 갖기로 약속했던 것입니다. 안타깝게도 24시간이 지나서야 이런 사실이 알려졌습니다. 시청자들이 이미 무고한 사람을 나쁜 사람으로 만들어 해를 가한 뒤였습니다.

우리는 부분적인 정보만 가지고 모든 사실을 아는 것처럼 생각할 때가 너무 많습니다. 현대의 ‘알았어’ 문화 속에서는, 전체 이야기를 다 들어보지도 않고 극적인 영상과 선동적인 트윗의 단편만 가지고 사람들을 매도하기 쉽습니다. 그러나 성경은 “거짓된 풍설을 퍼뜨리지 말라” (출애굽기 23:1)고 경고합니다. 비난하기 전에 가능한 모든 노력을 다해 진실을 확인해야 하며, 거짓말에 동참하지 않도록 해야 합니다. 우리는 감시자 정신이 발동하거나 열정이 불붙어 심판의 물결이 요동칠 때마다 조심해야 하며, “다수를 따라 악을 행하지” (2절) 않도록 우리 스스로를 지켜야 합니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리가 거짓된 풍설을 퍼뜨리지 않도록 하나님께서 도와주시기를 간구합니다. 우리가 지혜를 드러내고 오직 진실만을 말하도록 하나님께서 우리에게 필요한 것들을 공급해주시기를 소원합니다.

TRUTH, LIES, AND VIGILANTES

During the 2018 baseball season, a Chicago Cubs coach wanted to give a baseball to a young boy sitting by the dugout. But when the coach tossed the ball toward him, a man scooped it up instead. Video of the event went viral. News outlets and social media skewered this “brute” of a man. Except viewers didn’t know the whole story. Earlier, the man had helped the young boy snag a foul ball, and they agreed to share any additional balls that came their way. Unfortunately, it took twenty-four hours before the true story emerged. The mob had
already done its damage, demonizing an innocent man.

Too often, we think we have all the facts when we only have fragments. In our modern gotcha culture, with snippets of dramatic video and inflamed tweets, it’s easy to condemn people without hearing the full story. However, Scripture warns us not to “spread false reports” (EXODUS 23:1) . We must do everything possible to confirm the truth before leveling accusations, making sure not to participate in lies. We should be cautious whenever a vigilante spirit takes hold, whenever passions ignite and waves of judgment swell. We want to safeguard ourselves from “follow[ing] the crowd in doing wrong” (V. 2) .

As believers in Jesus, may God help us not to spread falsehoods. May He provide what we need to exhibit wisdom and to make certain our words are actually true.

뜻밖의 손님

잭은 외로운 사람이었습니다. 시내 거리를 걸을 때면 적대감에 찬 눈길들이 느껴졌습니다. 그러나 그때 그의 삶이 바뀌었습니다. 초대 교부 중 한 명인 알렉산드리아의 클레멘트는 잭이 아주 두드러진 기독교 지도자이자 가이사랴 교회의 목회자가 되었다고 말합니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 예수님을 보기 위해 돌무화과나무에 올라간 세리장 삭개오를 이야기하고 있는 것입니다 (누가복음 19:1-10) .

무엇이 그를 나무에 오르게 했을까요? 세리들은 로마 제국을 섬기기 위해 자국민에게 무거운 세금을 매겼기 때문에 배신자로 여겨졌습니다. 그렇지만 예수님은 그들을 받아주신다는 소문이 났습니다. 삭개오는 예수님이 자신도 받아주실지 궁금했을 것입니다. 그러나 키가 작은 삭개오는 군중들 너머

한편 예수님도 삭개오를 ‘찾고’ 계셨습니다. 그리스도께서는 삭개오가 걸터앉아 있던 나무에 이르러 그를 쳐다보며 말씀하셨습니다. “삭개오야 속히 내려오라 내가 오늘 네 집에 유하여야 하겠다” (5절) . 예수님은 이 버림받은 사람의 집에 반드시 손님으로 찾아가야겠다고 생각하셨습니다. 상상해보십시오! 세상을 구원하실 분이 사회에서 배척된 사람과 함께 시간을 보내고 싶어 하신 것을 말입니다.

우리의 마음이나 관계나 삶에 치유가 필요하다면, 우리도 삭개오처럼 소망을 가질 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리가 그분께로 돌아설 때 결코 거절하지 않으십니다. 주님은 잃어버리고 망가진 것을 회복시키시고 우리 삶에 새로운 의미와 목적을 부여해 주십니다.

AN UNEXPECTED GUEST

Zach was a lonely guy. When he walked down the city streets, he could feel the hostile glares. But then his life took a turn. Clement of Alexandria, one of the church fathers, says that Zach became a very prominent Christian leader and a pastor of the church in Caesarea. Yes, we’re talking about Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector who climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus (LUKE 19:1–10) .

What prompted him to climb the tree? Tax collectors were perceived as traitors because they heavily taxed their own people to serve the Roman Empire. Yet Jesus had a reputation for accepting them. Zacchaeus might have wondered if Jesus would accept him too. Being short in stature, however, he couldn’t see over the crowd (V. 3) . Perhaps he climbed a tree to seek Him out.

And Jesus was seeking Zacchaeus too. When Christ reached the tree where he was perched, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today” (V. 5) . Jesus considered it absolutely necessary that He be a guest in this outcast’s home. Imagine that! The Savior of the world wanting to spend time with a social reject.

Whether it’s our hearts, relationships, or lives that need mending, like Zacchaeus we can have hope. Jesus will never reject us when we turn to Him. He can restore what’s been lost and broken and give our lives new meaning and purpose.

예수님 안에서 강인함

루이 잠페리니가 타고 있던 군용기가 전쟁 중 바다에 추락해 탑승자 11 명 중 8명이 사망했습니다. “루이”와 다른 두 사람은 겨우 구명보트에 몸을 실었습니다. 그들은 상어와 맞서고, 폭풍을 이겨내고, 적기에서 날아드는 총탄을 피하고, 날생선과 새를 잡아먹으면서 두 달간 표류했습니다. 그러다 어느 섬에 겨우 이르렀는데 곧바로 포로로 잡혔습니다. 전쟁포로가 된 루이는 2년 동안 구타당하고 고문당하고 무지막지하게 일을 했습니다. 그의 놀라운 이야기는 ‘언브로큰’이라는 책에 쓰여 있습니다.

예레미야는 성경에 나오는 강인한 인물 중 한 명입니다. 그는 적들의 음모를 견뎌냈고 (예레미야 11:18) , 매를 맞고 쇠고랑에 채워졌으며 (20:2) , 채찍질 당한 후 옥에 갇혔고 (37:15-16) , 밧줄에 매달린 채 깊은 진흙 구덩이에 던져졌습니다 (38:6) . 그러나 예레미야는 살아남았습니다. 하나님이 그와

하나님이 보호해 주신 것을 알게 된 루이는 전쟁이 끝난 후 그의 삶을 예수님께 바쳤습니다. 자신을 억류했던 사람들을 용서하고 그중 몇 명을 그리스도께 인도했습니다. 루이는 모든 문제들을 다 피할 수는 없지만 홀로 고통받지 않아도 된다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 예수님과 함께 문제에 맞설 때 우리는 강인해집니다.

UNBREAKABLE IN JESUS

Louis Zamperini’s military plane crashed at sea during the war, killing eight of eleven men onboard. “Louie” and two others clambered into life rafts. They drifted for two months, fending off sharks, riding out storms, ducking bullets from an enemy plane, and catching and eating raw fish and birds. They finally drifted onto an island and were immediately captured. For two years Louie was beaten, tortured, and worked mercilessly as a prisoner of war. His remarkable story is told in the book Unbroken.

Jeremiah is one of the Bible’s unbreakable characters. He endured enemy plots (JEREMIAH 11:18) , was whipped and put in stocks (20:2) , flogged and bound in a dungeon (37:15–16) , and lowered by ropes into the deep mire of a cistern (38:6) . He survived because God had promised to stay with him and rescue him (1:8) . God makes a similar promise to us: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (HEBREWS 13:5) . God didn’t promise to save Jeremiah or us from trouble, but He has promised to carry us through trouble.

Louie recognized God’s protection, and after the war he gave his life to Jesus. He forgave his captors and led some to Christ. Louie realized that while we can’t avoid all problems, we need not suffer them alone. When we face them with Jesus, we become unbreakable.

C.S. 루이스는 이렇게 썼습니다. “평범한 사람은 아무도 없다. 당신이 단순한 보통 사람과 이야기를 나눈 적은 지금껏 한번도 없다.” 다른 말로, 인간의 모든 만남에는 영원한 결과가 뒤따른다는 것입니다. 신실하고 온화한 삶으로 나타나는 조용한 증인의 모습을 통해, 아니면 지친 영혼에게 건네는 격려의 말을 통해 주변 사람들의 삶에 변화를 줄 기회가 우리에게 날마다 다가옵니다. 그리스도를 닮은 삶이 다른 사람들에게 줄 수 있는 영향을 절대로 과소평가하지 마십시오.

THE SWEET AROMA OF CHRIST

I knew a rancher who lived near Lometa, Texas. His two grandsons were my best friends. We would go into town with him and follow him around while he shopped and chatted with the folks he knew. He knew them all by name and he knew their stories. He’d stop here and here and ask about a sick child or a difficult marriage, and he’d offer a word of encouragement or two. He would share Scripture and pray if it seemed the right thing to do. I’ll never forget the man. He was something special. He didn’t force his faith on anyone, but he always seemed to
leave it behind.

The elderly rancher had about him what Paul would call the sweet “aroma of Christ” (2 CORINTHIANS 2:15) . God used him to “spread the aroma of the knowledge of [Christ]” (V. 14) . He’s gone to be with God now, but his fragrance lingers on in Lometa.

C. S. Lewis wrote, “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked with a mere mortal.” Put another way, every human contact has eternal consequences. Every day we have opportunities to make a difference in the lives of people around us through the quiet witness of a faithful and gentle life or through encouraging words to a weary soul. Never underestimate the effect a Christlike life can have on others.

울타리를 옮겨라

그마을 목사는 잠을 이룰 수 없었습니다. 제2차 세계 대전이 격렬해지자 미국 병사들이 찾아와 전사한 전우를 교회 옆 울타리가 쳐진 묘지 안에 묻게 해달라고 했지만, 그는 교인들만 매장하게 되어있기 때문에 그럴 수 없다고 말했습니다. 그래서 미군들은 사랑하는 전우를 울타리 바로 밖에 묻었습니다.

그런데 다음날 아침 군인들은 무덤을 찾을 수 없었습니다. “어떻게 된 일입니까? 무덤이 사라졌네요.” 한 군인이 목사에게 물었습니다. 목사는 “아, 아직 거기 있습니다”라고 하면서 혼란스러워하는 군인에게 이렇게 설명했습니다. “제가 안 된다고 말한 것을 후회했습니다. 그래서 어젯밤에 일어나서 울타리를 옮겼습니다.”

우리가 구할 때, 하나님은 인생의 어려움에 대한 새로운 생각을 주실 수도 있습니다. 그것은 바로 억압받는 이스라엘 백성들에게 선포한 선지자 이사야의 메시지였습니다. 그 옛날 홍해를 건너며 구원받은 것을 그리워하며 뒤돌아보는 대신, 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 새로운 기적을 행하시며 새로운 길을 내시는 것을 바라보면서 그들의 안목을 바꿀 필요가 있었습니다. 이사야는 “옛날 일을 생각하지 말라”고 그들에게 촉구했습니다. “보라 내가 새 일을 행하리라” (이사야 43:18-19) . 의심과 어려움을 겪을 때 하나님은 소망의 근원이 되십니다. “내가 광야에 물을, 사막에 강들을 내어 내 백성, 내가 택한 [백성] 에게 마시게 할 것임이라” (20절) .

새로운 시각을 되찾게 되면 우리도 삶 속에서 하나님의 새로운 방향을 볼 수 있습니다. 우리도 새로워진 눈으로 하나님의 새로운 길을 볼 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그러고 나서 용기를 내어 하나님을 용감하게 따르면서 새로운 땅에 발을 내딛을 수 있기를 바랍니다.

MOVE YOUR FENCE

The village vicar couldn’t sleep. As World War II raged, he’d told a small group of American soldiers they couldn’t bury their fallen comrade inside the fenced cemetery next to his church. Only burials for church members were allowed. So the men buried their beloved friend just outside the fence.

The next morning, however, the soldiers couldn’t find the grave. “What happened? The grave is gone,” one soldier told the reverend. “Oh, it’s still there,” he told him. The soldier was confused, but the churchman explained. “I regretted telling you no. So, last night, I got up—and I moved the fence.”

God may give fresh perspective for our life challenges too—if we look for it. That was the prophet Isaiah’s message to the downtrodden people of Israel. Instead of looking back with longing at their Red Sea rescue, they needed to shift their sight, seeing God doing new iracles, blazing new paths. “Do not dwell on the past,” He urged them. “See, I am doing a new thing!” (ISAIAH 43:18–19) . He’s our source of hope during doubts and battles. “I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, [providing] drink to my people, my chosen [people]” (V. 20) .

Refreshed with new vision, we too can see God’s fresh direction in our lives. May we look with new eyes to see His new paths. Then, with courage, may we step onto new ground, bravely following Him.

망가진 삶에서 복음을 전하는 삶으로

전설적인 야구선수 대릴은 마약으로 인생을 망칠 뻔했지만, 예수님이 그를 마약에서 벗어나게 하셔서 여러 해 동안 마약 없이 잘 지내면서, 지금은 마약 중독으로 힘들어하는 사람들을 돕고 그들을 믿음의 길로 인도하고 있습니다. 대릴은 지난 날을 돌아보며 하나님께서 망가진 그의 인생을 복음을 전하는 삶으로 바꾸셨다고 확신 있게 말합니다.

하나님에게는 어려운 일이란 아무것도 없습니다. 예수님이 제자들과 함께 갈릴리 바다에서 광풍이 부는 밤을 보낸 후 무덤 근처의 호숫가에 오셨을 때, 어둠의 영에 사로잡힌 사람이 갑자기 예수님께 다가왔습니다. 예수님은 그 사람 안에 있는 귀신들을 꾸짖어 몰아내시고 그를 자유롭게 해주셨습니다.

예수님께서 떠나실 때 귀신 들렸던 사람은 함께 가기를 간청했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 그 사람이 따로 할 일이 있었기 때문에 허락하지 않으시고 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “집으로 돌아가 주께서 네게 어떻게 큰일을 행하사 너를 불쌍히 여기신 것을 네 가족에게 알리라” (마가복음 5:19) .

그 사람은 그 후 다시 등장하지 않지만 성경은 우리에게 흥미로운 것을 보여줍니다. 그 지역 사람들은 두려워하며 예수님께 “떠나시기를” (17 절) 간청했지만, 예수님이 나중에 다시 오셨을 때에는 큰 군중이 모였습니다 (8:1) . 그 군중들은 예수님이 귀신 들렸던 사람을 집으로 돌려보내셨기 때문이었을까요? 한때 어둠의 지배를 받았던 그 사람이 사실상 예수님의 구원의 능력을 효과적으로 전하는 최초의 선교사 중 한 명이었다고 할 수 있을까요?

천국의 이런 면에 대해서는 결코 알지 못할지라도, 이것만은 아주 분명합니다. 하나님께서 우리를 자유롭게 하셔서 그분을 섬기게 하시면, 하나님은 엉망 같은 과거조차도 소망과 사랑의 메시지로 바꾸어 주신다는 것입니다.

FROM MESS TO MESSAGE

Darryl was a baseball legend who nearly destroyed his life with drugs. But Jesus set him free, and he’s been clean for years. Today he helps others struggling with addiction and points them to faith. Looking back, he affirms that God turned his mess into a message.

Nothing is too hard for God. When Jesus came ashore near a cemetery after a stormy night on the Sea of Galilee with His disciples, a man possessed by darkness immediately approached Him. Jesus spoke to the demons inside him, drove them away, and set him free.

When Jesus left, the man begged to go along. But Jesus didn’t allow it, because He had work for him to do: “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you” (MARK 5:19) .

We never see the man again, but Scripture shows us something intriguing. The people of that region had fearfully pleaded with Jesus “to leave” (V. 17) , but the next time He returned there, a large crowd gathered (8:1) . Could the crowd have resulted from Jesus sending the man home? Could it be that he, once dominated by darkness, became one of the first missionaries, effectively communicating Jesus’ power to save?

We’ll never know this side of heaven, but this much is clear. When God sets us free to serve Him, He can turn even a messy past into a message of hope and love.

하나님이 만드신 도구

지금까지 만들어진 게임 중 최고의 비디오 게임으로 꼽히는 닌텐도의 ‘젤다의 전설: 시간의 오카리나’는 전 세계적으로 7백만 장 이상이 팔렸습니다. 이와 함께 흙으로 빚은 자그마한 감자 모양의 고대 악기 오카리나도 유명해졌습니다.

오카리나는 언뜻 보기에 악기 같지 않습니다. 하지만 입구에 입을 대고 불면서 기형의 몸체에 뚫린 여러 구멍들을 손가락으로 막으며 연주하면, 놀랍도록 평온하고 귀에 남을 희망의 소리가 흘러나옵니다.

오카리나 제작자는 점토에 압력과 열을 가해 변형시켜 멋진 악기를 만들어냅니다. 나는 여기서 하나님과 우리의 모습을 봅니다. 이사야 64장 6 절과 8-9절은 이렇게 말합니다. “무릇 우리는 다 부정한 자 같아서... 그러나 여호와여, 이제 주는 우리 아버지시니이다 우리는 진흙이요 주는 토기장이시니...
너무 분노하지 마시오며.” 선지자는 이렇게 말하고 있었던 것입니다. ‘하나님, 하나님이 주권자시고 우리 모두는 죄인입니다. 우리를 하나님을 위한 아름다운 도구로 빚어 주소서.’

GOD’S MOLDED INSTRUMENTS

Considered one of the greatest video games ever made, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has sold more than seven million copies worldwide. It’s also popularized the ocarina, a tiny, ancient, potato-shaped musical instrument made of clay.

The ocarina doesn’t look like much of a musical instrument. However, when it’s played—by blowing into its mouthpiece and covering various holes around its misshapen body—it produces a strikingly serene and hauntingly hopeful sound.

The ocarina’s maker took a lump of clay, applied pressure and heat to it, and transformed it into an amazing musical instrument. I see a picture of God and us here. Isaiah 64:6, 8–9 tells us: “All of us have become like one who is unclean. . . . Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter. . . . Do not be angry beyond measure.” The prophet was saying: God, You’re in charge. We’re all sinful. Shape us into beautiful instruments for You.

That’s exactly what God does! In His mercy, He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sin, and now He’s shaping and transforming us as we walk in step with His Spirit every day. Just as the ocarina maker’s breath flows through the instrument to produce beautiful music, God works through us—His molded instruments—to accomplish His beautiful will: to be more and more like Jesus (ROMANS 8:29) .
