그리스도처럼 보이려면

1950-60년대에 어린 아이였던 나는 “미국의 인기 취미활동”이 야구였던 시대에 자랐습니다. 공원에 가서 야구하는 것을 너무 좋아했고 가장 설레였던 기억 중 하나는 우리 팀 이름인 ‘자이언츠’ 가 선명하게 새겨진 야구 셔츠를 받았을 때였습니다. 비록 등번호 9가 나를 다른 사람들과 구별하고 있었지만, 우리가 똑같이 입는 유니폼은 우리를 같은 팀으로 나타내 주었습니다.

성경에서 팔복의 가르침으로 알려진 마태복음 5:3-10에서 예수님은 천국에 속한 사람들이 그리스도와 같은 “옷을 입은” 사람들이라고 말합니다. 천국은 그들의 왕인 예수님의 모습과 성격을 닮은 사람들로 구성됩니다. 예수님이 말하는 “복된” 사람들은 외모나 건강, 또는 재산으로 특징지어지지 않습니다. 오히려 중요한 것은 사람의 속과 마음입니다. “심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니”(3절)라고 했습니다. 이들은 영적으로 궁핍함을 스스로 아는 겸손한 사람들을 말합니다. “의에 주리고 목마른 자는 복이 있나니”(6절)라고 했습니다. 이들은 영혼의 갈망이 하나님을 즐거워하고 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 사람들을 말합니다. “화평하게 하는 자는 복이 있나니”(9절)라고 했습니다. 이들은 화합을 추구하며 예수님과 함께 하는 사람들을 말합니다.

성령께서 우리를 도우실 때, 우리는 그리스도와 같은 옷을 입을 수 있습니다. 그 옷은 우리가 예수님을 믿는 자요 예수님 팀의 팀원임을 나타내는 유니폼입니다. 그래야 우리는 진실로 복된 자들입니다!

LOOKING LIKE CHRIST

As a child of the 1950s and ’60s, I grew up in the era when “America’s pastime” was baseball. I couldn’t wait to go to the park and play ball, and one of my greatest thrills was when I received my baseball jersey emblazoned with our team’s name— GIANTS! Though the number 9 on the back distinguished me from the others, the common uniform identified us as being on the same team.

In Matthew 5:3-10, known as the Beatitudes, Jesus identifies those who belong to the kingdom of heaven as those who “wear the jersey” of Christlikeness. The kingdom of heaven is comprised of those who assume the posture and character of their king. According to Jesus, “blessed” persons aren’t characterized by external appearance, health, or possessions. Rather, it’s the inside or heart of a person that counts. “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (V. 3)—the humble—those who are spiritually needy and know it. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” (V. 6)—those whose soul’s yearning is to please and honor God. “Blessed are the peacemakers” (V. 9)—those who join Jesus in the pursuit of harmony.

As the Spirit helps us, we can put on the garment of Christlikeness, which identifies us as believers in Jesus and members of His team. As such, we’re blessed indeed!

한밤중에도 연락할 수 있는 친구

“모든 일이 잘못되었을 때 당신은 한밤중에 누구에게 연락할 수 있습니까?” 몇 년 전, 이 질문을 처음 들었을 때 나는 충격에 빠졌습니다. 내가 도움이 필요할 때 신세 질 수 있을 만큼 든든한 친분관계는 과연 몇 명이나 될까? 나는 확신이 없었습니다.

성경은 우정에 관하여 이런 말을 합니다. 비밀을 지키며(잠언 11:13; 16:28), 서로 권고하며(27:9), 피차 경계선을 지키며(25:17), 신뢰할 수 있는 친구들. 그러나 예수님만큼 우정을 강하게 정의한 사람은 없을 것입니다. 우리는 광고주에게는 시장이고 고용주에게는 직원이지만, 모두의 주가 되시는 예수님께 우리는 “친구”입니다(요한복음 15:15). 예수님은 자신의 우정을 하나님의 사랑을 함께 나누고 개인적 희생 위에 세워진 관계로 묘사하셨습니다 (13, 15절). 그것은 예수님께서 친히 본을 보이셨고 전해 주시기 위하여 우리를 부르신 우정입니다(12절).

그 질문을 듣고 몇 년 후 우리 부부는 아주 가까운 사람을 잃었습니다. 그 일을 아는 몇 안 되는 사람 중 하나인 대런은 나를 만나려고 2시간을 운전하여 와서 나의 분노와 고통을 듣고 나를 위해 기도했습니다. 대런은 할 일이 많아서 하루가 바쁜 사람입니다. 그러나 그는 예수님의 본을 따라 희생적인 우정을 보여 주었습니다. 나에게는 정말 필요할 때 도와줄 사람이 있었던 것입니다.

이제 문제는 다른 사람들이 나를 “한밤중에 연락할 수 있는 친구”로 생각 하는지 여부입니다. 내가 한 사람의 좋은 친구가 되는 것이 친구를 더 많이 사귈 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법이니까요.

A FRIEND AT MIDNIGHT

“Who can you call at midnight when everything has gone wrong?” This question shook me when I first heard it years ago. How many of my friendships were strong enough that I could impose on them in my hour of need? I wasn’t sure.

Scripture has much to say about friendship, describing a friend as someone who keeps confidences (PROVERBS 11:13; 16:28), shares advice (27:9), and respects boundaries (25:17). But perhaps no one defined friendship more powerfully than Jesus. While to advertisers we are markets and to employers we are staff, to Him, the Master of all, we are “friends” (JOHN 15:15). Jesus described His kind of friendship as being built on shared love of God and personal sacrifice (VV. 13, 15)—something He Himself modeled and called us to pass on (V. 12).

A couple of years after hearing that question, my wife and I suffered a significant loss. Darren, one of the few who knew what happened, traveled two hours to see me, listen to my anger and pain, and pray for me. Darren is a busy man who had plenty of other things to do with his day. But he followed Jesus’ example of sacrificial friendship. I really did have someone in my hour of need.

The question now is whether others have a “friend at midnight” in me. For there are few better ways to make more friends than to be one.

붙들어 주시는 하나님

우리는 아버지를 병원에서 집으로 모셔왔습니다. 아버지가 갑자기 퇴행성 질환으로 꼼짝없이 침상생활을 하게 되신 겁니다. 식사도 영양관으로 할 수밖에 없는 정도여서, 우리 가족은 하루 24시간 아버지를 간병하는 새로운 일상에 어떻게든 적응하고 있었습니다. 또한 어머니의 위 수술을 앞두고 있었으며 직장에서는 까다로운 고객들과 씨름하느라 애를 먹고 있었습니다. 부모님의 간병과 직장의 골치 아픈 업무에 시달리다가 하루는 화장실로 도망쳐 하나님께 울부짖었습니다. ‘하나님 아버지 도와주세요. 앞으로의 날들을 잘 감당하도록 제게 힘을 주세요.’

다윗도 여러가지 고난들로 시달리던 때가 있습니다(시편 55:2-5). 아들 압살롬에게 공격을 받고, 친한 친구에게 배신당하고, 이어지는 예루살렘에서의 폭력 앞에 속수무책이었던 다윗은 “두려움과 떨림이 내게 이르고”(5절)라고 했습니다.

그러나 다윗은 하나님을 신뢰하기로 선택했습니다(23절). 하나님께서 “의인의 요동함을 영원히 허락하지 아니하시리로다”(22절) 하신 말씀을 믿었습니다. 다윗은 오랜 세월 전능자를 신뢰하면서 고난이 우리를 불안정하게 만들지라도 하나님을 믿는 사람은 결코 돌이킬 수 없는 패배와 절망에 빠지지 않는다는 사실을 배웠습니다. “주님께서 우리의 손을 잡아 주시니, 넘어지지 않는다”(시편 37:24, 새번역). 다윗은 하나님께서 그분의 능력과 지혜로 자신을 도우실 것을 알고 있었습니다. “나는 하나님께 부르짖으리니 여호와께서 나를 구원하시리로다”(55:16).

14년이 지난 지금도 우리는 아버지를 집에서 돌보고 있습니다. 그 시간 동안 나는 모든 걱정을 하나님께 맡기면 그분께서 우리를 붙들어 주신다는 것을 배웠습니다(22절). 하나님은 우리의 짐을 지시고 우리를 붙들어주십니다.

SUSTAINED BY GOD

My family and I brought my dad home from the hospital. He had a degenerative disease, and we were now adjusting to the new twenty-four-hour medical routines of his suddenly becoming bedridden and requiring a feeding tube. I was also planning for my mom’s gastric procedure and dealing with demanding clients at work. Feeling overwhelmed, I sought privacy in the bathroom one day and cried out to God: Help me, Father. Please give me strength to get through the days ahead.

David also felt overwhelmed by troubles (PSALM 55:2-5). Attacked by his son Absalom, betrayed by his close friend, and helpless over the ensuing violence in Jerusalem, David said, “Fear and trembling have beset me” (V. 5).

But David chose to trust God (V. 23). He believed “[God] will never let the righteous be shaken” (V. 22). Years of trusting the Almighty had taught David that although troubles may unsteady us, those who place their faith in God will never be irrevocably lost and hopeless. “They will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand” (37:24 NLT). David knew God would support him with His strength and wisdom: “I call to God, and the Lord saves me” (55:16).

Fourteen years later, we continue to care for my dad at home. The years have taught me that when we cast our cares on Him, He sustains us (V. 22). God bears our burdens, and He bears us up too.

보고 섬기기

“때때로 우리는 살다 보면 도저히 안 본 것으로 할 수 없는 일들을 봅니다.” 미국 CBS 방송 ’60분’ 프로에 출연한 알렉산더 매클린이 한 말입니다. 사우스 런던 출신인 이 사람은 18살 때 우간다로 가서 교도소 호스피스 일을 도왔습니다. 그곳에서 도저히 안 본 것으로 할 수 없는 일을 보았는데, 한 노인이 변기 옆에 힘없이 쓰러져 있는 모습이었습니다. 매클린은 5일 동안 이 환자를 돌보았으나 그 사람은 결국 죽었습니다.

이 경험은 매클린의 열정을 불타게 만들었습니다. 법과대학을 졸업하고 소외된 사람들을 도우려고 아프리카로 다시 돌아갔습니다. 결국 그는 ‘정의의 수호자’라는 수감자들을 옹호하는 자선 단체를 설립했습니다.

많은 사람들은 우리가 보게 된다면 도저히 “안 본 것으로 할 수 없는” 일들을 만나는 환경 속에서 살고 있습니다. 하지만 우리는 그런 모습을 보지 않고 삽니다. 황폐한 고향을 한탄하는 예레미아애가에서 선지자는 안 본 것으로 여겨지는 자신의 느낌을 감정을 이렇게 쏟아 부르짖었습니다. “지나가는 사람들이여 너희에게는 관계가 없는가? 나의 고통과 같은 고통이 있는가 볼지어다”(예레미야애가 1:12).

예레미야는 자신뿐만 아니라 억압받는 모든 사람들에 대해서도 마음이 아팠습니다. 그래서 화려한 수사학을 써가며 반문합니다. “세상에 있는 모든 갇힌 자들을 발로 밟는 것과, 사람의 재판을 굽게 하는 것과... 주께서 기쁘게 보시는 것이 아니로다”(3:34-36). 그러나 선지자는 이렇게 희망을 보지요. “주께서 영원하도록 버리지 아니 하실 것임이며”(31절), “주여 주께서 내 심령의 원통함을 풀어 주셨고 내 생명을 속량하셨나이다”(58절).

“안 본 것으로 여겨지는 사람들”이 우리 주변에 많이 있습니다. 우리를 구원하신 하나님께서는 주님이 우리에게 능력을 주심에 따라 그들을 보고 섬기라고 우리를 부르십니다.

TO SEE AND TO SERVE

“Sometimes in life we see things that we can’t unsee,” Alexander McLean told a 60 Minutes interviewer. The South Londoner was eighteen when he went to Uganda to assist in prison and hospice work. That’s where he saw something he couldn’t unsee—an old man lying helpless next to a toilet. For five days McLean cared for him. Then the man died.

The experience ignited a passion in McLean. He earned his law degree and returned to Africa to help the marginalized. Eventually he founded Justice Defenders, an organization that advocates for prisoners.

Many people live in conditions we couldn’t “unsee” if we were to see them. But we don’t see them. In his lament for his devastated homeland, the prophet Jeremiah poured out his heart over his sense of being unseen. “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?” he cried. “Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering?” (LAMENTATIONS 1:12).

Jeremiah’s heart ached not only for himself but for all the oppressed as well. “To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, to deny people their rights . . . would not the Lord see such things?” he asked rhetorically (3:34-36). Yet he saw hope. “No one is cast off by the Lord forever,” he said. “You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life” (VV. 31, 58).

The “unseen” are all around us. God, who has redeemed us, calls us to see and serve them as He enables us.

믿음의 시험

서기 304년에 로마 황제 막시미아누스는 승리를 거두어 니코메디아 시에 입성했습니다. 도시 전체가 모여 이방신에게 승리를 감사하는 퍼레이드가 열리게 되었는데, 유일하신 참 하나님만을 경배하는 사람들로 가득 찬 한 교회를 제외한 모든 사람들이 다 모였습니다. 황제는 교회에 들어가 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 포기하고 처벌을 피하라고 최후 통첩을 전했습니다. 그러나 교회는 거부했습니다. 막시미아누스가 신자들이 모여 있는 교회에 불을 지르라고 명령해 그들은 모두 순교했습니다.

바울 사도는 그리스도를 따르면서 받아야 하는 대가를 알고 있었습니다. 고린도전서 4장에서 그는 자신의 믿음을 간증하면서 그리스의 도시 고린도에 사는 신자들과 맞서 싸웠습니다. 바울은 사도들이 예수님과 자신들을 위해 고난을 받았다고 말한 것입니다. 그들은 그리스도를 섬김으로 “온 세계에 구경 거리가 되었습니다”(9절).

오늘날에도 예수를 믿는 사람들은 그들의 믿음 때문에 고난을 당합니다. 복음을 위해 기꺼이 고난을 택한 니코메디아의 신자들처럼, 우리가 직면하는 어떤 반대에도 그리스도를 향한 믿음의 힘을 드러낼 수 있기를 바랍니다. 우리는 “공의로 심판하시는 이”에게 우리의 생명을 맡길 수 있습니다.

TEST OF OUR FAITH

In ad 304, the Roman emperor Maximian victoriously entered the city of Nicomedia. Parades were ordered as the city gathered to thank pagan gods for the victory—everyone except for a church full of people who worshiped only the one true God. Maximian entered the church with an ultimatum: Escape punishment by renouncing faith in Christ. They refused. All were killed when Maximian ordered the church set on fire with the believers inside.

The apostle Paul understood the cost of following Christ. In 1 Corinthians 4, he confronted the believers living in the Greek city of Corinth with his testimony. Paul stated that the apostles had suffered for Jesus and for their sake. They had been “made a spectacle to the whole universe” (V. 9) as they served Christ.

Similarly, the apostle Peter reminded us how Jesus suffered on our behalf. “When they hurled their insults at [Jesus], he did not retaliate,” wrote Peter. “When he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly” (1 PETER 2:23).

Still today, believers in Jesus suffer for their faith. Like the Nicomedian believers who willingly chose to suffer for the gospel, may any opposition we face serve to reveal the strength of our faith in Christ. We can entrust our lives to the one “who judges justly.”

하나님, 우리의 안전한 장소

15시간 동안 운전하고 있었는데, 늦은 밤 토네이도 경보가 울렸습니다. 이 경고는 즉시 대피해야 한다는 것이었습니다. 마치 신호라도 받은 듯 하늘에서 번개가 치고 바람이 차창에 부딪혀왔습니다. 우리는 고속도로를 질주해서 콘크리트로 된 호텔 건물 근처에 주차했습니다. 서둘러 안으로 뛰어들어갔고, 피난처를 찾을 수 있어서 감사했습니다.

고난은 우리에게 머물 수 있는 안전한 장소가 필요하다는 것을 상기 시켜줍니다. 잠언 18장 10절은 이렇게 말합니다. “여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라.” 신학자들은 “여호와의 이름” 이라는 문구가 하나님이 누구이신지 하나님의 모든 것을 의미한다고 말합니다. 그분의 모든 속성은 우리가 그분 안에 피할 때 안전을 제공합니다. 하나님은 친절하시기 때문에 우리를 환영하십니다. 그분은 선하시기 때문에 우리의 말을 경청하십니다. 그분은 사랑이시기 때문에 우리와 공감하십니다.

하지만 하나님은 그저 문제에 대처하는 또 다른 방법의 하나가 아닙니다. 그분은 임시방편이나 해결책 그 이상입니다. 그분 안에서 피난처를 찾는다는 것은 다른 것보다 그분의 도움을 선택하는 것을 의미합니다. 우리는 기도로 그분께 달려가거나, 성경을 묵상하거나, 스트레스와 불안의 시기에 성령님께 순종할 수 있습니다. 오랜 세월에 걸친 이런 습관으로 우리는 진정한 피난처이신 주님께 평생 의지하게 됩니다.

GOD, OUR SAFE PLACE

We’d been driving for fifteen hours, and it was late at night when a tornado alert jolted us to attention. The warning said we should take cover immediately. As if on cue, lightning exploded in the sky, and wind pressed against our car windows. We sped off the highway and parked near a concrete hotel building. Sprinting inside, we were thankful to find shelter.

Trouble reminds us we need a safe place to stay. Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Theologians tell us the phrase “the name of the Lord” means the entirety of who God is. All His attributes provide security as we hide ourselves in Him. Because God is kind, He welcomes us. Because He’s good, He listens to us. Because He’s love, He empathizes with us.

But God isn’t just another way to cope with problems. He’s more than a quick fix or a distraction. Taking refuge in Him means choosing His help over everything else. We can run to Him in prayer, meditate on Scripture, or surrender to the Holy Spirit in times of stress and anxiety. Over the years, these habits lead to a lifetime of reliance on the one who is our true shelter.

하나님이 주신 은사

GOD-GIVEN GIFTS

In a poignant performance of Pilgrim: The Musical, Leisa stood before a special section for the Deaf and, using American Sign Language, expressively interpreted the performance. The musical, based on John Bunyan’s book The Pilgrim’s Progress about one man’s faith journey, was deeply moving, but so was Leisa’s delivery.

When asked about her interpreting, Leisa said, “The reason I do Pilgrim and the reason I interpret is because the gospel should be accessible to everyone. And the Deaf are a group that is [largely] ignored.” She went on to say, “It’s heartbreaking because less than 2 percent of the Deaf worldwide have heard about Jesus.” Leisa uses her gift so the Deaf can know Jesus.

Like Leisa, we’re called to use our gifts and abilities to be witnesses of God’s love and draw others to Jesus—to impact the world with the good news. The apostle Peter wrote, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 PETER 4:10). These gifts include loving and praying for others (VV. 7-8). Whether you’re an encourager, a helper serving behind the scenes, a teacher, a speaker, a prayer warrior, or have another gift or ability, God can use you to serve others. Just ask. He’ll show you a way.

옳은 장소, 옳은 시간

한 호텔에서 간호학회가 열리고 있는 중인데 한 손님이 로비에서 심장 마비를 일으켰습니다. 즉시, 24명이 넘는 간호 인력들이 곁으로 와서 그를 살리기 위해 노력했습니다. 그 손님은 바로 그 장소에 그 시간에 있었던 모든 간호사들에게 매우 감사했습니다.

에스더 역시 옳은 자리에 옳은 시간에 있었습니다. 이 여인은 왕의 은총과 인정을 받은 후에 왕비로 선택되었습니다(에스더 2:17). 그러나 같은 민족인 유대인들을 위협하는 조서가 내려오자, 그녀의 사촌 모르드개는 에스더에게 왕비의 지위를 이용하여 죽음에 직면한 민족을 구해달라고 왕에게 간청해 주기를 권했습니다. “네가 왕후의 자리를 얻은 것이 이 때를 위함이 아닌지 누가 알겠느냐”(4:14)라며 한번 해보라고 한 것입니다. 자신의 목숨을 걸고 악한 음모를 폭로하기 위해 “왕에게 나아가는”(16절) 에스더의 결정은 유대민족을 죽음으로부터 구원했습니다(8장). 에스더 왕비는 하나님께서 자신을 필요한 시간에 그런 지위에 두셨다는 것을 깨달았음이 분명합니다.

RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME

A nursing convention was being held at a hotel when a guest experienced a heart attack in the lobby. Immediately, more than two dozen caregivers came to his side and worked to keep him alive. The guest was incredibly grateful for all the nurses who were at the right place at the right time.

Esther was also at the right place at the right time. She’d been chosen to be queen after winning the king’s favor and approval (ESTHER 2:17). Yet a decree threatened her people, the Jews, so her cousin Mordecai encouraged her to use her position to appeal to the king to save them from certain death. “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” he challenged her (4:14). Her decision to risk her life and “go to the king” (V. 16) to disclose this evil plot saved the Jews from certain death (CH. 8). It’s apparent that Queen Esther understood that God had placed her in that position at just the right time.

Sometimes, we may wonder why situations happen or circumstances change. Perhaps we get frustrated and try to get things “back to normal.” God may have placed us in our current situation for a specific purpose. Today, as we encounter disruptions or changes, let’s ask God to show us if there’s something special He wants us to do as part of His perfect plan.

성령의 인도하심을 따라

네비게이션 앱이 라스 베가스에서 로스앤젤레스로 가는 운전시간을 한 시간 정도 단축할 수 있는 경로를 보여주었을 때, 쉘비 이슬러와 그의 동생은 그 대체 경로를 택했습니다. 그런데 그 “지름길”은 그들을 흙으로 덮힌 길을 몇 시간 동안 지나가게 한 후에 모래 폭풍이 부는 캘리포니아 모하비 사막에 갇혀 꼼짝 못하게 만들었습니다. 차를 되돌릴 수 있었지만, 험난한 지형 때문에 차가 심하게 손상되어 결국은 견인해야만 했습니다. 그 앱의 개발자는 그 잘못 안내된 길을 따라 갔던 많은 여행자들에게 사과했습니다.

인도받기 위해 누구를 의지하는지가 중요합니다. 우리는 예수님을 믿는 자들로서 진리로 우리를 인도하시고 방향을 지시해주시는 성령을 받았습니다.

예수께서는 자신이 머지않아 죽으시고 제자들에게서 떠나가게 될 것을 아시고, 제자들을 버리지 않으시겠다고 확실히 약속하셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 주님의 계명을 순종할 것을 촉구하시면서, 그들과 영원히 함께 하시고 그들 안에 살게 되실 약속하신 성령, 즉 진리의 영에 대해 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 14:15-17). “보혜사 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령 그가 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하리라” (26절).

하루를 살아가면서 우리를 인도하시는 성령님을 따릅시다. 우리는 성령님께서 결코 우리를 잘못된 길로 인도하지 않으실 것을 알고 있습니다.

LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

When the navigation app suggested a route that would cut almost an hour off their drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, Shelby Easler and her brother followed the alternate directions. However, the “shortcut” led them along a dirt path for hours that left them stranded in California’s Mojave Desert during a dust storm. They were able to reverse course, but they eventually had to be towed because of all the damage to their car from the rough terrain. The app developer apologized to the numerous travelers who followed those wrong directions.

It’s important who we rely on for guidance. As believers in Jesus, we’ve been given the Holy Spirt to lead and direct us in matters of truth.

When Jesus knew that He’d soon die and be taken from His disciples, He assured them He wouldn’t leave them stranded. He urged His disciples to obey His commands and spoke of the promised Holy Spirit, or the Spirit of truth, who would be with them forever and live inside of them (JOHN 14:15-17). “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (V. 26).

Let’s continue to follow the Holy Spirit’s prompting as we go throughout our day. We know He’ll never lead us astray. NANCY GAVILANES

꾸준히 기도에 매달리기

로이스톤의 딸 한나가 뇌출혈로 혼수상태에 빠졌을 때 그와 가족들은 계속하여 하나님께 기도했습니다. 몇 달을 기다리면서 그들은 서로에게, 그리고 하나님께 매달렸습니다. 로이스톤이 “하나님이 이렇게 가까이 느껴진 적이 없었다”고 회상했던 것처럼 그 가족들의 신앙이 다시 깨어났습니다. 시련 속에서도 그들은 누가복음 18장에 나오는 과부처럼 “꾸준히 기도할 수 있게 하는 믿음의 회복”을 얻었습니다.

로이스톤은 예수님께서 “항상 기도하고 낙심하지 말아야 할 것”(누가복음 18:1)을 설명하기 위해, 마을 재판장에게 끊임없이 정의를 구한 과부에 관한 이야기를 들려주셨다고 말했습니다. 이 여인은 재판관에게 거듭 호소했고, 재판관은 끝내 지쳐서 그 청을 들어주었습니다. 예수님께서는 그 무심한 재판관과 하나님을 대조하시면서 “하물며 하나님께서 그 밤낮 부르짖는 택하신 자들의 원한을 풀어주지 아니하시겠느냐”(7절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

PERSISTING IN PRAYER

When Royston’s daughter Hannah suffered a brain bleed that resulted in a coma, he and his family repeatedly turned to God in prayer. Over months of waiting, they clung to each other—and to God. The family’s faith awakened, as Royston reflected: “Never has God felt closer.” Throughout the ordeal, they were given “a renewal of faith to persist in prayer” like the “widow of Luke 18.”

Royston referred to Jesus’ story about a widow who continually sought justice from the town’s official, which He gave to illustrate “that they should always pray and not give up” (LUKE 18:1). This woman appealed repeatedly to the judge, who in weariness finally relented. Jesus contrasted that uncaring judge with God, saying, “Will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night?” (V. 7).

Although Christ’s story addresses an unjust judge, the family members felt spurred on by it to pray for Hannah, asking the truly just and loving God for relief and help. They found themselves being drawn ever closer to Him: “As we seek God . . . it’s almost as if we’re the ones really waking up from our slumber.” After many months, Hannah woke from the coma and is slowly recovering.

When we draw close to God, He hears our requests and answers according to His grace. He invites us to cry out to Him day or night.
