받은 은혜를 나누기

우리 아들은 입양 전에 보육원에서 어린 시절을 보냈습니다. 우리는 아이를 그 콘크리트 건물에서 집으로 데려오기 전에 먼저 남아있는 그의 소지품을 모아 달라고 부탁했습니다. 안타깝게도 아이는 아무것도 없었습니다. 우리는 아이가 입고 있는 옷을 준비한 새 옷으로 갈아입히고, 다른 아이들을 위해서도 옷들을 남겨두었습니다. 나는 그가 가진 것이 아무것도 없는 것이 슬펐지만, 이제부터 우리가 그의 육체적 정서적 필요를 채워줄 수 있다는 것이 기뻤습니다.

몇 년 후, 우리는 가난한 가정들을 위해 기부를 부탁하는 한 사람을 만났습니다. 내 아들은 즐거이 자신의 동물 인형들과 동전 얼마를 기부했습니다. 그의 배경을 생각해보면 자기가 가진 것을 꼭 붙잡고 싶은 마음이 더 컸을지도 모릅니다(이해할 만하지요).

그가 너그러움을 보인 이유는 초대교회의 경우와 같다는 생각이 듭니다. “하나님의 은혜가 그들 모두에게 너무나도 강력하게 역사하고 있었기 때문에” 그들 중에 가난한 사람이 없었습니다(사도행전 4:33-34). 사람들은 서로의 필요를 채워주기 위해 자발적으로 자신들의 소유를 팔았습니다.

물질적이든 정신적이든 우리가 다른 사람들의 필요를 알게 될 때, 우리 속에 역사하는 하나님의 은혜가 매우 강하여 초대 교회와 같이 궁핍한 이들에게 마음으로부터 기꺼이 베풀 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이것은 우리가 예수님 안에서 “한 마음과 한 뜻”(32절)을 품은 성도로서 하나님의 은혜의 질그릇이 되게 해줍니다.

EXTENDING GRACE TO OTHERS

Our son spent the early years of his life in a children’s home prior to our adopting him. Before leaving the cinderblock building together to go home, we asked to collect his belongings. Sadly, he had none. We exchanged the clothes he was wearing for the new items we’d brought for him and also left some clothing for the other children. Even though I was grieved by how little he had, I rejoiced that we could now help meet his physical and emotional needs.

A few years later, we saw a person asking for donations for families in need. My son was eager to donate his stuffed animals and a few coins to help them. Given his background, he might have (understandably) been more inclined to hold tightly to his belongings.

I’d like to think the reason for his generous response was the same as that of the early church: “God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all” that nobody in their midst had need (ACTS 4:33–34). The people willingly sold their own possessions to provide for one another’s needs.

When we become aware of the needs of others, whether material or intangible, may God’s grace be so powerfully at work in us that we respond as they did, willingly giving from our hearts to those in need. This makes us vessels of God’s grace as fellow believers in Jesus, “one in heart and mind” (V. 32). KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

이해가 안 될 때

“나는 주님의 계획을 이해할 수 없어요. 나의 온 삶을 주님께 맡겼는데 이런 일이 벌어지다니!” 이것은 어떤 아들이 프로 운동선수로 성공하려는 자신의 꿈이 잠시 틀어졌을 때 그의 어머니에게 보낸 메시지입니다. 우리 중 누가 탄식과 의문이 밀려드는 예상 못한 실망을 경험하지 않은 사람이 있을까요? 가족 중 하나가 아무런 말도 없이 소식을 끊고, 호전되던 건강이 다시 나빠지며, 회사가 예기치 않게 이전을 하고, 삶을 바꾸어 놓는 사건이 일어납니다.

욥기 1-2장은 욥이 연속으로 겪는 삶의 비극과 좌절을 기록합니다. 인간적으로 말해서 세상에 아무런 문제없이 살 사람이 있다면 그것은 욥이었을 것입니다. “그 사람은 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자더라”(욥기 1:1). 하지만 삶은 항상 우리가 원하는 대로 되지 않습니다. 욥에게 뿐만 아니라 우리에게도 그렇습니다. 그의 아내가 “하나님을 욕하고 죽으라”(2:9)고 일렀을 때, 욥이 그녀에게 한 말은 지혜롭고 교훈적이며, 우리가 마주하고 싶지 않은 크고 작은 일이 일어날 때 우리에게도 해당되는 말입니다. “우리가 하나님께 복을 받았은즉 화도 받지 아니하겠느냐 하고 이 모든 일에 욥이 입술로 범죄하지 아니하니라”(10절).

인생의 어려운 시절에 하나님의 일하심을 이해하지 못해도, 하나님의 능력으로 그를 신뢰하고 경외할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

WHEN WE DON’T UNDERSTAND

“I don’t understand His plan. I turned my whole life over to Him. And this happens!” Such was the message of a son to his mother when his dream to succeed as a professional athlete was temporarily derailed. Who among us hasn’t had some kind of unexpected, disappointing experience that sends our minds into overdrive with exclamations and questions? A family member cuts off communication without explanation; health gains are reversed; a company relocates unexpectedly; a life-altering accident happens.

Job 1–2 records a series of tragedies and setbacks in Job’s life. Humanly speaking, if there was anyone who qualified for a life free from trouble, it was Job. “This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil” (JOB 1:1). But life doesn’t always work out the way we’d like it to—it didn’t for Job, and it doesn’t for us. When his wife counseled him to “curse God and die!” (2:9), Job’s words to her were wise, instructive, and fitting for us as well when things happen—big or small—that we’d rather not face. “ ‘Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?’ In all this, Job did not sin in what he said” (V. 10).

By God’s strength, may our trust in and reverence for Him remain, even when we can’t understand how He’s at work during life’s difficult days. ARTHUR JACKSON

사랑의 참된 본질

팬데믹으로 인한 봉쇄 기간에 어쩔 수 없이 피트니스센터를 닫아야 했던 제리는 몇 달 동안 수입이 없었습니다. 하루는 친구에게서 제리의 시설에서 오후 6시에 만나자는 문자를 받았습니다. 제리는 이유를 몰랐지만 그곳으로 갔습니다. 곧 차들이 주차장으로 들어오기 시작했습니다. 첫 번째 차의 운전자가 건물 근처의 인도에 바구니를 놓았습니다. 그 뒤를 이어 (오십 대 가량의) 차들이 계속 들어왔습니다. 차 안에 있던 사람들은 제리에게 손을 흔들거나 큰소리로 안부를 묻고는 그 바구니 앞에 멈춰 카드나 돈을 놓고 갔습니다. 어떤 사람들은 어려운 형편에도 돈을 냈습니다. 이들 모두가 시간을 내어 그를 격려해 주었습니다.

바울 사도에 따르면 사랑의 본질은 희생입니다. 그는 고린도 교인들에게 마게도니아 사람들이 그들의 “힘에 지나도록” 베풀어 사도들과 다른 이들의 필요를 채울 수 있었다고 설명했습니다(고린도후서 8:3). 마게도니아 사람들은 사도들과 하나님의 사람들에게 베풀 기회를 달라고 바울에게 “간곡히 부탁” 하기까지 했습니다. 그들이 헌금한 바탕에는 예수님의 희생하는 마음이 있었습니다. 예수님은 종이 되어 자신의 생명을 주시기 위해 천국의 부요함을 버리고 이 땅에 오셨습니다. “그리스도께서는 부요하나, [우리를] 위해서 가난하게 되셨습니다”(9절, 새번역).

THE TRUE NATURE OF LOVE

During the pandemic lockdown, Jerry was forced to close his fitness center and had no income for months. One day he received a text from a friend asking to meet him at his facility at 6:00 p.m. Jerry wasn’t sure why but made his way there. Soon cars started streaming into the parking lot. The driver in the first car placed a basket on the sidewalk near the building. Then car after car (maybe fifty of them) came by. Those inside waved at Jerry or hollered out a hello, stopped at the basket, and dropped in a card or cash. Some sacrificed their money; all gave their time to encourage him.

The true nature of love is sacrificial, according to the apostle Paul. He explained to the Corinthians that the Macedonians gave “even beyond their ability” so they could meet the needs of the apostles and others (2 CORINTHIANS 8:3). They even “pleaded” with Paul for the opportunity to give to them and to God’s people. The basis for their giving was the sacrificial heart of Jesus Himself. He left the riches of heaven to come to earth to be a servant and to give His very life. “Though he was rich, yet for [our] sake he became poor” (V. 9).

May we too plead with God so that we might “excel in this grace of giving” (V. 7) in order to lovingly meet the needs of others. ANNE CETAS

듣는 것이 중요하다

“당장 와주세요. 우리 배가 빙산에 부딪혔습니다.” 이는 ‘카파시아호’ 무선통신사 헤럴드 코탐이 1912년 4월 15일 오전 12시 25분에 침몰하는 ‘타이타닉호’로부터 받은 무전의 첫마디였습니다. 이렇게 ‘카파시아호’는 재난 현장에 도착해 706명의 생명을 구한 첫 번째 배가 됩니다.

여러 날 후 미국 상원 청문회에서 ‘카파시아호’ 선장 아서 로스트론은 다음과 같이 증언했습니다. “모든 것은 절대적으로 하나님의 섭리였습니다. 그 시간에 무선통신사는 자기 선실에 있었습니다. 근무시간도 아니었고, 옷을 벗다가 그냥 들은 것입니다...... 아마도 10분 후엔 잠을 청했을 텐데, 그랬다면 아무도 그 메시지를 못 들었을 것입니다.”

듣는 것은 중요합니다. 특히 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 것은 더 그렇습니다. 시편 85편을 기록한 고라 자손들은 잘 듣고 순종할 것을 강력하게 권고했습니다. “내가 하나님 여호와께서 하실 말씀을 들으리니 무릇 그의 백성, 그의 성도들에게 화평을 말씀하실 것이라 그들은 다시 어리석은 데로 돌아가지 말지로다. 진실로 그의 구원이 그를 경외하는 자에게 가까우니”(8-9 절). 그들의 조상인 고라가 하나님을 거스르고 광야에서 죽었기 때문에 그들의 훈계는 더욱 와닿습니다(민수기 16:1-35).

‘타이타닉호’가 침몰하던 그날 밤, 또 다른 배가 더 가까이 있었지만 그 배의 무선통신사는 이미 잠자리에 들었습니다. 그가 그 조난신호를 들었다면 아마도 더 많은 생명을 구할 수 있었을 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 가르침에 순종하여 하나님께 귀 기울이면 아무리 어려운 삶의 풍파 속에서도 헤쳐나갈 수 있도록 도와주실 것입니다.

LISTENING MATTERS

“Come at once. We have struck a berg.” Those were the first words Harold Cottam, the wireless operator on the RMS Carpathia, received from the sinking RMS Titanic at 12:25 a.m. on April 15, 1912. The Carpathia would be the first ship to the disaster scene, saving 706 lives.

In the US Senate hearings days later, the Carpathia’s captain Arthur Rostron testified, “The whole thing was absolutely providential. . . . The wireless operator was in his cabin at the time, not on official business at all, but just simply listening as he was undressing. . . . In ten minutes maybe he would have been in bed, and we would not have heard the message.”

Listening matters—especially listening to God. The writers of Psalm 85, the sons of Korah, urged attentive obedience when they wrote, “I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—but let them not turn to folly. Surely his salvation is near those who fear him” (VV. 8–9). Their admonition is especially poignant because their ancestor Korah had rebelled against God and had perished in the wilderness (NUMBERS 16:1–35).

The night the Titanic sank, another ship was much closer, but its wireless operator had gone to bed. Had he heard the distress signal, perhaps more lives would have been saved. When we listen to God by obeying His teaching, He’ll help us navigate even life’s most troubled waters. JAMES BANKS

카리브해의 작은 섬 일루서라에 있는 인공 다리에서 여행객들은 대서양의 거칠고 짙푸른 바다와 카리브해의 잔잔한 청록색 바다 사이의 뚜렷한 대조에 감탄합니다. 원래 천연 석조 아치로 구분되었던 지대가 오랜 기간 동안 폭풍에 의해 씻겨 나가 버렸습니다. 현재 일루서라의 관광 명소인 유리로 된 그 다리는 “지구상에서 가장 좁은 곳”으로 알려져 있습니다.

성경은 영생으로 가는 길은 좁고 “찾는 자가 적다”(마태복음 7:14)고 말합니다. 그 문이 작다고 여겨지는 이유는 성자 하나님이 타락한 사람과 성부 하나님을 성령의 능력으로 화해시킬 수 있는 유일한 다리이기 때문입니다 (13-14절; 요한복음 10:7-9; 16:13 참조). 그러나 성경은 또한 모든 백성과 모든 나라, 모든 사회 계급 출신의 믿는 자들이 천국에 들어갈 수 있고, 왕 중의 왕 앞에서 절하며 그의 보좌를 둘러서서 함께 예배할 것이라고 말합니다(요한계시록 5:9). 이 놀라운 대조와 연합의 장면에는 하나님의 아름다운 다양한 백성들이 모두 들어있습니다.

ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

From a manmade bridge on the small Caribbean island of Eleuthera, visitors can admire the stark contrast between the roiling dark blue waters of the Atlantic and the calm turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Over time, storms washed away the original strip of land once marked by a natural stone arch. The glass window bridge that now serves as a tourist attraction on Eleuthera is known as “the narrowest place on earth.”

The Bible describes the road that leads to eternal life as narrow “and only a few find it” (MATTHEW 7:14). The gate is considered small because God the Son is the only bridge that can reconcile fallen man and God the Father through the power of the Holy Spirit (VV. 13–14; SEE JOHN 10:7–9; 16:13). However, Scripture also says that believers from every people, nation, and societal rank can enter heaven and will bow before the King of Kings and worship together around His throne (REVELATION 5:9). This phenomenal image of contrast and unity includes all of God’s beautifully diverse people.

Though we are separated from God by our sin, every person God created is invited to enter eternity in heaven by walking this narrow path of reconciliation through a personal relationship with Christ. His sacrifice on the cross, resurrection from the tomb, and ascension to heaven is the good news, accessible to all and worth sharing today and every day. XOCHITL DIXON

징계하는 사랑

딸아이가 문을 쾅 닫았습니다. 그리고는 한 번 더 문을 쾅 닫았습니다. 나는 차고로 가서 망치와 드라이버를 가져와 딸의 방으로 갔습니다. 그리고 조용히 말했습니다. “얘야, 화가 났을 때는 조절하는 법을 배워야 해.” 그러고는 문을 떼어내 차고에 옮겨다 놓았습니다. 나는 문을 잠시 없애는 것이 딸아이가 자제력이 중요하다는 것을 기억하는 데 도움이 되길 바랐습니다.

잠언 3:11-12에서 지혜로운 스승은 하나님의 징계를 받아들이라고 권면합니다. ‘징계’는 “교정”이라는 말로 번역될 수 있습니다. 선하시고 사랑이 많으신 아버지로서, 하나님은 성령님과 성경을 통해 우리 자신에게 해가 되는 행동을 고치라고 말씀하십니다. 하나님의 징계는 관계적인 것으로, 그분의 사랑과 우리에게 가장 좋은 것을 주기 원하는 그분의 마음에서 나옵니다. 때로는 잘못의 결과로 징계를 받기도 하며, 때로는 우리가 미처 모르고 지내던 것들을 하나님이 다른 사람을 통해 지적해 주시기도 합니다. 하나님의 징계는 대개 불편하지만, 사실 그것은 선물입니다.

그러나 우리는 항상 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다. 지혜자는 “여호와의 징계를 경히 여기지 말라”(11절)고 경고합니다. 우리는 때때로 하나님의 징계를 두려워합니다. 그리고 삶의 나쁜 일들을 하나님의 징계라고 잘못 해석하기도 합니다. 이것은 우리를 기뻐하시기에 징계하시고, 우리를 사랑하시기에 교정하시는 사랑의 하나님 아버지의 마음과는 거리가 아주 멉니다.

하나님의 징계를 두려워하지 말고 그것을 받아들이기를 배울 수 있기를 바랍니다. 우리를 바로잡아 주시는 하나님의 음성을 마음으로 듣거나 말씀을 읽으면서 찔림이 올 때에는, 우리를 너무나 기뻐하셔서 가장 좋은 길로 인도하시는 하나님께 감사할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

LOVE THAT DISCIPLINES

She slammed the door. She slammed the door again. I went to the garage, grabbed a hammer and a screwdriver, and walked to my daughter’s room. Calmly, I whispered, “Sweetheart. You have to learn to control your temper.” And then I removed her door from the hinges and carried it to the garage. My hope was that temporarily removing the door would help her remember the importance of self-control.

In Proverbs 3:11–12, the wise teacher invites readers to accept God’s discipline. The word discipline could be translated “correction.” As a good and loving Father, God speaks through His Spirit and the Scriptures to correct self-destructive behavior. God’s discipline is relational—rooted in His love and His desire for what’s best for us. Sometimes it looks like consequences. Sometimes God prompts someone to point out our blind spots. Often, it’s uncomfortable, but God’s discipline is a gift.

But we don’t always see it that way. The wise man cautioned, “Do not despise the Lord’s discipline” (V. 11). Sometimes we fear God’s discipline. At other times we misinterpret bad things in our lives as God’s discipline. This is far from the heart of a loving Father who disciplines because He delights in us and corrects because He loves us.

Instead of fearing God’s discipline, may we learn to accept it. When we hear God’s voice of correction in our hearts or experience conviction when reading Scripture, may we thank God that He delights in us enough to lead us to what’s best. DANIEL RYAN DAY

두려움 없는 사랑

사람마다 결코 잊을 수 없는 아주 강렬한 인상을 준 장면들이 있습니다. 나의 경우는 고 다이애나 왕세자비의 유명한 사진을 보았을 때였습니다. 처음 봤을 때 사진 속의 장면은 그냥 평범해 보였습니다. 왕세자비가 따뜻하게 웃으며 어느 모르는 사람과 악수를 하는 모습이었으니까요. 하지만 이 사진에 얽힌 이야기는 놀랄 만한 것이었습니다.

1987년 4월 19일, 다이애나 왕세자비가 런던의 미들섹스 병원을 방문했을 때 영국은 에이즈의 창궐로 두려움에 공황 상태에 빠져 있었습니다. 무서운 속도로 사망에 이르게 하는 그 병이 어떻게 퍼지는지를 알지 못했던 당시 사람들은 에이즈 환자들을 사회적으로 버림받은 사람들처럼 취급하기도 했습니다.

그래서 그날 다이애나가 장갑을 끼지 않은 채 진실된 미소로 조용히 에이즈 환자와 악수를 하는 모습은 충격적인 장면이었습니다. 그 존중과 친절의 장면은 에이즈 환자들을 동일한 자비와 연민의 마음으로 대하도록 세상에 감동을 주었을 것입니다.

FEARLESS LOVE

There are some images so powerful they can never be forgotten. That was my experience when I viewed a famous photograph of the late Princess Diana of Wales. At first glance, the captured scene looks mundane: smiling warmly, the princess is shaking the hand of an unidentified man. But it’s the photograph’s story that makes it remarkable.

On April 19, 1987, when Princess Diana visited London Middlesex Hospital, the United Kingdom was engulfed in a wave of panic as it confronted the AIDS epidemic. Not knowing how the disease—which often killed with terrifying speed—was spread, the public at times treated AIDS victims like social pariahs.

So it was a stunning moment when Diana, with ungloved hands and a genuine smile, calmly shook an AIDS patient’s hand that day. That image of respect and kindness would move the world to treat victims of the disease with similar mercy and compassion.

The picture reminds me of something I often forget: freely and generously offering the love of Jesus to others is worth it. John reminded early believers in Christ that to let love wither or hide in the face of our fear is really to live “in death” (1 JOHN 3:14). And to love freely and unafraid, filled and empowered with the Spirit’s self-giving love, is to experience resurrection life in all its fullness (VV. 14, 16). MONICA LA ROSE

선한 분쟁

미국 하원의원이자 민권운동 지도자였던 존 루이스가 2020년에 세상을 떠났을 때 많은 유력 정치인들이 애도하였습니다. 1965년에 루이스는 흑인 시민의 투표권을 보장받기 위해 마틴 루터 킹과 함께 행진하였습니다. 그 행진 중에 루이스는 두개골 골절상을 입고 평생 그 상흔을 지니고 살았습니다. 루이스는 말했습니다. “무언가 옳지 않고, 공정하지 않으며, 공평하지 않은 일을 본다면, 당신은 무언가를 말하고, 무언가를 해야 할 도덕적인 의무가 있습니다.” 또한 그는 “목소리를 내면서 선하고 필요한 분쟁에 빠지는 것을 절대 두려워하지 마십시오.”라고 말했습니다.

GOOD TROUBLE

When John Lewis, an American congressman and civil rights leader, died in 2020, people from many political persuasions mourned. In 1965, Lewis marched with Martin Luther King Jr. to secure voting rights for black citizens. During the march, Lewis suffered a cracked skull, causing scars he carried the rest of his life. “When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair,” Lewis said, “you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something.” He also said, “Never, ever, be afraid to make some noise and get in good, necessary trouble.”

Lewis learned early that doing what was right, to be faithful to the truth, required making “good” trouble. He would need to speak things that were unpopular. The prophet Amos knew this too. Seeing Israel’s sin and injustice, he couldn’t keep quiet. Amos denounced how the powerful were oppressing “the innocent and tak[ing] bribes and depriv[ing] the poor of justice in the courts,” while building “stone mansions” with “lush vineyards” (AMOS 5:11–12). Rather than maintaining his own safety and comfort by staying out of the fray, Amos named the evil. The prophet made good, necessary trouble.

But this trouble aimed at something good—justice for all. “Let justice roll on like a river!” Amos exclaimed (V. 24). When we get into good trouble (the kind of righteous, nonviolent trouble justice requires), the goal is always goodness and healing. WINN COLLIER

먼저 용서하라

우리는 서로 “그리스도 안에서 자매”라고 불렀지만, 내 백인 친구와 나는 적처럼 행동하기 시작했습니다. 어느 날 카페에서 아침 식사를 하던 중 우리는 인종 문제에 대해 다른 의견으로 심한 말다툼을 벌였습니다. 그렇게 헤어진 후 나는 그녀를 다시 보지 않겠다고 다짐했습니다. 그러나 일 년 후 우리는 같은 선교 단체의 같은 부서에서 일하게 되면서 다시 마주치지 않을 수 없었습니다. 처음에는 어색했지만 우리는 갈등에 대해 대화를 나눴습니다. 시간이 지나면서 하나님은 우리가 서로 사과하고 상처를 치유하며 사역에 최선을 다할 수 있도록 도와주셨습니다.

하나님은 또한 에서와 그의 쌍둥이 형제 야곱 사이의 가슴 아픈 분쟁을 치유하셨고, 그들의 삶을 축복하셨습니다. 모략가이었던 야곱은 에서에게서 아버지의 축복을 빼앗았습니다. 그러나 20년 후, 하나님은 야곱을 고향으로 돌려보내셨습니다. 그래서 야곱은 에서를 달래려고 많은 선물을 먼저 보냈습니다. “그러자 에서가 달려와 그를 맞으며 목을 끌어안고 입을 맞췄습니다. 그리고서 그들은 서로 울었습니다”(창세기 33:4, 현대인의 성경).

FIRST FORGIVE

We called ourselves “sisters in Christ,” but my white friend and I had begun to act like enemies. Over a café breakfast one morning, we argued unkindly over our differing racial views. Then we parted, with me vowing not to see her again. One year later, however, we were hired by the same ministry—working in the same department, unable not to reconnect. Awkwardly at first, we talked over conflicts. Then, over time, God helped us to apologize to each other and to heal and to give the ministry our best.

God also healed the bitter division between Esau and his twin brother, Jacob, and blessed both their lives. A onetime schemer, Jacob had robbed Esau of their father’s blessing. But twenty years later, God called Jacob to return to their homeland. So, Jacob sent ahead bountiful gifts to appease Esau. “But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept” (GENESIS 33:4).

Their reunion stands as a classic example of God’s urging to settle anger with a brother or sister before offering our gifts—talents or treasures—to Him (MATTHEW 5:23–24). Instead, “first go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift” (V. 24). Jacob obeyed God by reconciling with Esau, and later setting up an altar to the Lord (GENESIS 33:20). What a beautiful order: First strive for forgiveness and reconciliation. Then, at His altar, He receives us. PATRICIA RAYBON

다시 일어남

올림픽 달리기 선수인 라이언 홀은 미국의 하프 마라톤 기록보유자입니다. 그는 놀랍게도 13.1마일(21킬로미터)의 거리를 59분 43초 만에 달려서 1시간 이내의 기록을 세운 첫 번째 미국 선수가 되었습니다. 홀은 신기록을 세우는 승리들도 경험했지만, 경주를 마칠 수 없을 때의 실망감도 알고 있었습니다.

성공과 실패를 함께 맛본 그를 지켜준 것은 예수님에 대한 믿음이었습니다. 그가 가장 좋아하는 성경말씀 중 하나는 잠언의 “대저 의인은 일곱 번 넘어질지라도 다시 일어나려니와”(24:16)라는 용기를 주는 말씀이었습니다. 이 잠언은 하나님을 믿고 하나님과 올바른 관계를 맺는 의인도 어려움과 역경을 겪을 수 있다는 것을 일깨워 줍니다. 하지만 그 어려움 가운데에서도 계속 하나님을 찾을 때, 신실하신 하나님께서 다시 일어날 힘을 주십니다.

근래에 커다란 실망과 실패로 다시 일어나지 못할 것 같이 느낀 적이 있습니까? 성경은 우리 자신의 힘을 의지하기보다는 계속해서 하나님과 하나님의 약속을 믿으라고 권면합니다. 우리가 하나님을 믿을 때 성령께서 우리의 삶 가운데 크고 작은 어떤 어려움도 이길 수 있는 힘을 주십니다 (고린도후서 12:9).

RISE AGAIN

Olympic runner Ryan Hall is the US record-holder for the half marathon. He completed the event distance of 13.1 miles (21 kilometers) in a remarkable time of fifty-nine minutes and forty-three seconds, making him the first US athlete to run the race in under one hour. While Hall has celebrated record-setting victories, he’s also known the disappointment of not being able to finish a race.

Having tasted both success and failure, Hall credits his faith in Jesus for sustaining him. One of his favorite Bible verses is an encouraging reminder from the book of Proverbs that “though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again” (24:16). This proverb reminds us that the righteous, those who trust in and have a right relationship with God, will still experience difficulties and hardships. However, as they continue to seek Him even in the midst of difficulty, God is faithful to give them the strength to rise again.

Have you recently experienced a devastating disappointment or failure and feel like you will never recover? Scripture encourages us not to rely on our strength but to continue to put our confidence in God and His promises. As we trust Him, God’s Spirit gives us strength for every difficulty we encounter in this life, from the seemingly mundane to significant struggles (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). LISA M. SAMRA
