큰 자
커스버트는 영국 북부지방에서 널리 사랑받는 인물입니다. 7세기경, 그 지역에 복음을 전하는 책임을 맡은 그는 군주들에게 조언하며 국정에 영향을 끼쳤습니다. 그가 죽은 후에 그를 기념하여 더럼 시가 세워졌습니다. 하지만 커스버트의 유업은 이보다 더 다양한 면에서 아주 위대했습니다.
그 지역에 역병이 한 차례 지나간 후 커스버트는 주민들을 위로하기 위해 마을들을 한 차례 순방했습니다. 어느 한 마을을 떠나기 전 기도해야 할 사람이 더 있는지 확인하다가 아이를 끌어안고 있는 한 여인을 보았습니다. 그녀는 이미 아들 하나를 잃은 후였고, 안고 있는 아이도 죽어가고 있었습니다. 커스버트는 고열에 시달리는 아이를 팔에 안고 기도한 후 이마에 입을 맞추었습니다. 그리고 아이 엄마에게 “두려워하지 마십시오. 당신 가족 중에 아무도 죽지 않을 겁니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그 소년은 살았다고 전해집니다.
예수님도 한 번은 큰 자에 대해 가르치시려고 어린 소년을 팔에 안으시며, “누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이요” (마가복음 9:37)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 유대 문화에서 누군가를 “영접한다”는 것은 주인이 손님을 맞이하듯이 그들을 섬긴다는 뜻입니다. 당시에는 아이가 섬김을 받는 것이 아니라 아이가 어른을 섬기는 문화였으므로 그 말씀은 매우 충격적이었을 것입니다. 예수님의 의도는 무엇이었을까요? 진정 큰 사람은 가장 작고 낮은 자를 섬기는 자라는 것입니다(35절).

GREATNESS
Cuthbert is a much-loved figure in northern England. Responsible for evangelizing much of the area in the seventh century, Cuthbert counseled monarchs and influenced state affairs; and after his death, the city of Durham was built in his honor. But Cuthbert’s legacy is great in more ways than these.
After a plague ravaged the region, Cuthbert once toured affected towns offering solace. Readying to leave one village, he checked if there was anyone left to pray for. There was—a woman, clutching a child. She had already lost one son, and the child she held was nearing death too. Cuthbert took the fevered boy in his arms, prayed for him, and kissed his forehead. “Do not fear,” he told her, “for no one else of your household will die.” The boy reportedly lived.
Jesus once took a small boy into his arms to give a lesson on greatness, saying, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me” (MARK 9:37). To “welcome” someone in Jewish culture meant to serve them, the way a host welcomes a guest. Since children were to serve adults and not be served, the idea must’ve been shocking. Jesus’ point? True greatness resides in serving the smallest and lowliest (V. 35).
A counselor to monarchs. An influencer of history. A city built in his honor. But perhaps heaven records Cuthbert’s legacy more like this: A mother noticed. A forehead kissed. A humble life reflecting his Master. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

잊지 않으시는 하나님
“아서 삼촌, 저를 이발관과 슈퍼마켓에 데리고 갔던 날을 기억하세요? 그날 저는 황갈색 바지와 푸른 격자무늬 옥스퍼드 셔츠, 남색 카디건을 입고 갈색 양말과 갈색 락포트 신발을 신고 있었어요. 날짜는 2016년 10월 20일 목요일이었어요.” 몇 년이 지나도 입었던 옷과 날짜까지 자세히 기억하는 조카 제러드의 놀라운 기억력 때문에 그가 자폐증을 앓고 있다는 것을 잊곤 합니다.
자폐로 인한 제러드의 그런 기억력은 시간과 영원의 주관자이시며 모든 것을 아시는 사랑의 하나님을 생각하게 합니다. 하나님은 모든 사실을 아시고 자신이 한 약속과 자신의 백성들을 잊지 않으십니다. 하나님이 당신을 잊으신 건 아닌지 의문을 품은 적이 있습니까? 다른 사람들이 나보다 더 건강하고 더 행복하고 더 성공한 것처럼 보일 때나 그냥 더 나아 보일 때 그런 생각이 들지 않았는지요?
옛적에 이스라엘은 어려운 상황에 놓이자, “여호와께서 나를 버리시며 주께서 나를 잊으셨다”(이사야 49:14)고 했습니다. 그러나 그것은 사실이 아닙니다. 하나님의 연민과 돌보심은 어머니가 자녀를 향해 갖는 본능적인 사랑보다 훨씬 큽니다(15절). “버려졌다”거나 “잊혔다”라는 말을 하기 전에 하나님께서 그분의 아들 예수님 안에서, 예수님을 통해 하신 일이 어떤 것인지 다시 생각해 보십시오. 용서를 담은 복된 말씀으로 하나님은 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라”(15절).

NOT FORGOTTEN
“Uncle Arthur, do you remember the day you took me to the barbershop and the supermarket? I was wearing tan khakis, a blue-plaid oxford shirt, a navy-blue cardigan, brown socks, and brown Rockport shoes. The date was Thursday, October 20, 2016.” My nephew Jared’s autism-related challenges are offset by his phenomenal memory that can recall details like days and dates and the clothes he was wearing years after an event took place.
Because of the way he’s wired, Jared possesses the kind of memory that reminds me of the all-knowing, loving God—the Keeper of time and eternity. He knows the facts and won’t forget His promises or His people. Have you had moments when you’ve questioned whether or not you’ve been forgotten by God? When others appear to be healthier or happier or more successful or otherwise better off?
Ancient Israel’s less-than-ideal situation caused her to say, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me” (ISAIAH 49:14). But that wasn’t the case. God’s compassion and care exceeded the natural bonds of affection that mothers have for their children (V. 15). Before embracing labels like “forsaken” or “forgotten,” think again of what God has done in and through His Son, Jesus. In the gospel that brings forgiveness, God has clearly said, “I will not forget you!” (V. 15). ARTHUR JACKSON

예수님과 동행
존 뮤어 등산로를 걷는 사람들에게는 기름기가 적은 휴대 식량과 방수화, 그리고 지도가 필수품입니다. 미국 서부에 위치한 211마일(약 340 킬로미터)의 이 등산로는 시내를 건너고 호수와 숲을 돌며 산들을 오르내리는데, 전 구간의 오르막길만 합쳐도 47,000 피트(14.3킬로미터)의 고도를 오르는 셈이 됩니다. 이 등산로를 횡단하는데 약 3주가 걸리기 때문에 꼭 필요한 양의 물품만 지니고 가는 것이 아주 중요합니다. 너무 많이 지고 가면 지치게 되고, 너무 적으면 그 과정을 마치는데 필요한 물품이 모자라게 됩니다.
마찬가지로 예수님을 믿는 신자로서 우리의 여정을 잘 마치려면 무엇을 지녀야 할 것인지를 깊이 생각해야 합니다. 히브리서 12장은 “모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어버리라”고 말합니다. 저자는 우리의 삶을 “우리가 감당할 경주”에 비교하며 “피곤하여 낙심하지 말라”고 말합니다(1, 3절). 죄로 힘겨워하거나 우리를 위해 하나님이 정해주신 길을 벗어나는 것은 불필요한 짐을 지는 것과 같습니다.

WALKING WITH JESUS
Lean food rations, waterproof boots, and a map are some of the essentials carried by hikers on the John Muir Trail. The John Muir Trail is a 211-mile path in the western United States that winds across creeks, around lakes and woods, and up and over mountains, encompassing 47,000 feet of elevation gain. Because traversing this trail takes about three weeks, carrying the right amount of supplies is critical. Too much and you will run out of strength to carry it all; too little and you won’t have what you need for the journey.
Finishing well on our journey as believers in Jesus also requires careful consideration of what we bring. In Hebrews 12, we’re told to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” The author compares our lives to a “race marked out for us,” one in which we must “not grow weary and lose heart” (VV. 1, 3). To become overburdened with sin or distracted by things outside of God’s purpose for us is to carry an unnecessary weight.
Just as there are packing lists for the John Muir Trail, God has provided directions for following Jesus in the Bible. We can know what habits, dreams, and desires are worth bringing along by examining them in light of the Scriptures. When we travel light, we’re able to finish well. KAREN PIMPO

입양은 아름다운 것
2009년 영화 ‘블라인드 사이드’는 노숙하던 십대 아이 마이클 오어의 실화를 담고 있습니다. 한 가정에서 그를 데려와 학습장애를 극복하고 우수한 미식축구 선수가 되도록 도와줍니다. 영화의 한 장면을 보면, 마이클과 몇 달을 함께 지낸 그 가족이 그에게 그를 입양해도 되는지 묻습니다. 마이클은 사랑이 담긴 따뜻한 말로, 자기는 이미 이 집 식구라고 생각한다고 분명히 말합니다!
입양이 아름다운 것처럼, 이 장면은 참 아름답습니다. 한 가족이 팔을 벌려 새 식구를 맞이할 때 사랑은 더욱 커지고 완전한 한 식구가 될 수 있습니다. 입양으로 마이클의 인생이 완전히 바뀐 것처럼, 입양은 사람의 인생을 바꾸어 줍니다.
예수님 안에서 신자들은 주님을 믿는 믿음을 통해 “하나님의 자녀”가 됩니다(갈라디아서 3:26). 우리는 하나님께 입양되어 하나님의 아들과 딸이 되는 것입니다(4:5). 하나님의 자녀로 입양된 우리는 아들이신 예수님의 영을 받아 하나님을 “아버지”(6절)라고 부르며 그의 상속자가 되고(7절), 그리스도와 함께 공동상속자가 됩니다(로마서 8:17). 온전한 하나님의 가족 구성원이 되는 것입니다.

THE BEAUTY OF ADOPTION
The 2009 film The Blind Side depicts the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless teenager. A family takes him in and helps him overcome learning difficulties and achieve excellence in American football. In one scene, the family talks with Michael about the possibility of adopting him after he’d been living with them for several months. In a sweet and tender reply, Michael exclaims that he thought he already was a part of the family!
It’s a beautiful moment, just as adoption is a beautiful thing. Love is extended and full inclusion is offered as a family opens its arms to a new member. Adoption changes lives, just as it profoundly changed Michael’s life.
In Jesus, believers are made “children of God” through faith in Him (GALATIANS 3:26). We’re adopted by God and become His sons and daughters (4:5). It’s a beautiful moment, just as adoption is a beautiful thing. Love is extended and full inclusion is offered as a family opens its arms to a new member. Adoption changes lives, just as it profoundly changed Michael’s life.

자족의 비결
수영을 하다 사고를 당해 사지가 마비되어 집에 돌아온 조니 이렉슨 타다의 삶은 크게 달라졌습니다. 이제 방문은 휠체어가 들어가기에 너무 비좁고 싱크대도 너무 높았습니다. 식사도 스스로 먹는 법을 배울 때까지 남이 떠먹여주어야 했습니다. 처음에는 부목을 댄 팔로 특수 숟가락을 입으로 넣으려다 사과 소스를 흘려 옷이 더러워지자 비참한 생각이 들기도 했습니다. 하지만 그녀는 멈추지 않았습니다. “제 비결은 예수님께 의지하는 법을 배우고 이렇게 말하는 거였어요. ‘하나님 저 좀 도와주세요!’” 이제 그녀는 숟가락을 아주 잘 다룹니다.

THE SECRET OF CONTENTMENT
When Joni Eareckson Tada returned home after suffering a swimming accident that left her a quadriplegic, her life was vastly different. Now doorways were too narrow for her wheelchair and sinks were too high. Someone had to feed her, until she decided to relearn how to feed herself. Lifting the special spoon to her mouth from her arm splint the first time, she felt humiliated as she smeared applesauce on her clothes. But she pressed on. As she says, “My secret was learning to lean on Jesus and say, ‘Oh God, help me with this!’ ” Today she manages a spoon very well.

길이 휘어지는 곳에 이르렀을 때, 큰 곰 한 마리가 어슬렁거리며 머리를 좌우로 흔들고 낮은 소리로 킁킁거리고 있는 것이 보였습니다. 바람이 우리 쪽에서 불고 있어서 곰이 아직 우리를 못 보았지만 곧 발견할 것 같았습니다.
한 친구가 “아, 이건 꼭 사진으로 남겨야 해!”라며 카메라를 꺼내려고 재킷을 뒤지기 시작했습니다. 그러나 위험 앞에서 마음이 편치 않았던 나는 “아니야. 얼른 도망가야 해.”라고 말했습니다. 우리는 조용히 뒷걸음치다가 곰의 시야에서 벗어나자 냅다 뛰었습니다.
이 이야기는 위험도 무릅쓰고 부자가 되고 싶어 하는 열정에 대해 어떻게 생각해야 하는지 잘 보여줍니다. 돈 자체는 문제가 아닙니다. 돈은 다만 교환의 수단이기 때문입니다. 그러나 부자가 되기를 ‘갈망하는’ 자들은 “시험과 함정에 빠지고 사람을 파멸시키는 여러 가지 해로운 욕망에 떨어진다” (디모데전서 6:9, 현대인의 성경)고 바울은 기록합니다. 재물은 가지면 가질수록 더 갖고 싶어지는 것입니다.
그 대신 우리는 “의와 경건과 믿음과 사랑과 인내와 온유를 따라야”(11 절) 합니다. 우리가 이 덕목들을 추구하고 우리 속에 이것들이 생기게 해달라고 하나님께 간구하면 우리 안에 그 덕목들이 자라나게 됩니다. 이것이 바로 우리가 하나님 안에서 추구하는 깊은 만족을 확실히 누리는 방법입니다.

YOUR LIFE’S PASSION
One evening years ago, my wife and I were making our way down a mountain trail, accompanied by two friends. The trail was narrow and wound around a slope with a steep drop on one side and an unclimbable bank on the other.
As we came around a bend, I saw a large bear moseying along, swinging his head from side to side, and quietly huffing. We were downwind, and he hadn’t detected our presence, but he would soon.
Our friend began to rummage around in her jacket for a camera. “Oh, I must take a picture!” she said. I, being less comfortable with our odds, said, “No, we must get out of here.” So we backed up quietly until we were out of sight—and ran.
That’s how we should feel about the dangerous passion to get rich. There’s nothing wrong with money; it’s just a medium of exchange. But those who desire to get rich “fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction,” Paul wrote (1 TIMOTHY 6:9). Wealth is only a goad to get more.
Instead, we should “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness” (V. 11). These traits grow in us as we pursue them and ask God to form them within us. This is how we secure the deep satisfaction we seek in God. - DAVID H. ROPER

하나님의 보호하심
바늘, 우유, 버섯, 엘리베이터, 출산, 벌, 분쇄기 안의 벌. 이런 것들이 텔레비전 쇼 “멍크”의 주인공이자 탐정인 애드리안 멍크에게 공포증을 불러일으키는 것들입니다. 그러나 그의 오랜 적수인 해럴드 크렌쇼와 함께 자동차 트렁크 안에 갇혀 있는 동안 멍크는 많은 공포증 가운데 한 가지인 밀실공포증에서 벗어날 수 있게 되었습니다.
멍크와 해럴드 둘 다 공포로 떨고 있을 때 멍크의 불안한 마음에 갑자기 깨달음이 찾아왔습니다. 그래서 해럴드에게 이렇게 말합니다. “내 생각에는 우리가 이 상황을 잘못된 관점으로 보고 있는 것 같아. 이 트렁크, 이 트렁크 내벽......이런 것들이 우리를 가두고 있는 것이 아니라 사실은 이것들이 우리를 보호하고 있는 거야. 이것들이 우리를 나쁜 것들......병균, 뱀, 하모니카로부터 보호하고 있어.” 해럴드도 눈을 크게 뜨면서 그 말의 의미를 알아듣고 경탄하며 속삭였습니다. “이 트렁크가 우리의 ‘친구’로구나.”
시편 63편을 보면 다윗도 거의 비슷한 깨달음을 얻은 것처럼 보입니다. “물이 없어 마르고 황폐한 땅”에 있어도 그가 하나님의 능력과 영광과 사랑을 기억할 때(1-3절) 사막도 하나님의 돌보심과 보호를 받는 땅으로 변화되는 것 같았습니다. 마치 아기 새가 어미의 날개 밑에 숨어 있는 것 같이 다윗은 하나님께 가까이 있을 때 그 광야에서도 “골수와 기름진 것을 먹음 같이”(5절) “생명보다 나은”(3절) 사랑 안에서 영양과 힘을 얻을 수 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

GOD’S PROTECTION
Needles, milk, mushrooms, elevators, births, bees, and bees in blenders—these are just a fraction of the many phobias attributed to Mr. Adrian Monk, detective and title character of the TV show Monk. But when he and longtime rival Harold Krenshaw find themselves locked in a car trunk, Monk has a breakthrough that allows him to cross off at least one fear from his list—claustrophobia.
It’s while Monk and Harold are both panicking that the epiphany comes, abruptly interrupting Monk’s angst. “I think we’ve been looking at this the wrong way,” he tells Harold. “This trunk, these walls . . . they’re not closing in on us . . . they’re protecting us, really. They’re keeping the bad stuff out . . . germs, and snakes, and harmonicas.” Eyes widening, Harold sees what he means and whispers in wonder, “This trunk is our friend.”
In Psalm 63, it’s almost as if David has a similar epiphany. Despite being in a “dry and parched land,” when David remembers God’s power, glory, and love (VV. 1–3), it’s as if the desert transforms into a place of God’s care and protection. Like a baby bird hiding in the shelter of a mother’s wings, David finds that when he clings to God, even in that barren place, he can feast “as with the richest of foods” (V. 5), finding nourishment and strength in a love that “is better than life” (V. 3). - MONICA LA ROSE

친절이라는 유산
마르다는 한 초등학교에서 30년 넘게 보조교사로 일했습니다. 매년 그녀는 돈을 모아 어려운 학생들을 위해 외투나 목도리, 장갑 등을 사 주었습니다. 그녀가 백혈병을 이기지 못하고 세상을 떠났을 때 우리는 그녀의 삶을 기리는 예배를 드렸습니다. 사람들은 조화 대신 수백 벌의 새 겨울 외투를 마르다가 수십 년을 사랑하며 돌보았던 학생들에게 기증했습니다. 많은 사람들은 어떻게 마르다가 친절한 말과 사려 깊은 행동으로 사람들에게 용기와 힘을 주었는지를 이야기했습니다. 동료 교사들은 그녀가 세상을 떠난 후에도 3년 동안 외투 모으기 운동을 하며 그녀를 기렸습니다. 마르다가 유훈으로 남긴 친절은 사람들을 고취시켜 도움이 필요한 사람들을 넉넉하게 섬기도록 하고 있습니다.
사도행전 9장에서 누가는 “선행과 구제하는 일을 심히 많이 하던” 도르가에 대한 이야기를 전합니다(36절). 그녀가 병들어 죽자 슬픔에 잠긴 마을 사람들이 베드로에게 지체 없이 와 달라고 간청했습니다. 과부들은 모두 도르가가 어떻게 남을 섬기며 살았는지를 보여주었습니다(39절). 연민에 찬 기적적인 행동으로 베드로는 도르가를 다시 소생시켰고, 도르가의 부활 소식이 퍼지면서 많은 사람들이 주님을 믿게 되었습니다(42절). 그러나 이웃들의 마음을 감동시키고 넉넉한 사랑의 능력이 드러났던 것은 바로 도르가가 헌신적인 마음을 가지고 실제적으로 이웃들을 섬겼기 때문이었습니다.

LEGACY OF KINDNESS
Martha served as a teacher’s aide at an elementary school for over thirty years. Every year, she saved money to buy new coats, scarves, and gloves for students in need. After she lost her fight with leukemia, we held a celebration of life service. In lieu of flowers, people donated hundreds of brandnew winter coats to the students she loved and served for decades. Many people shared stories about the countless ways Martha encouraged others with kind words and thoughtful deeds. Her fellow teachers honored her memory with an annual coat drive for three years after her life ended on this side of eternity. Her legacy of kindness still inspires others to generously serve those in need.
In Acts 9, the apostle Luke shares a story about Dorcas, a woman who was “always doing good and helping the poor” (V. 36). After she got sick and died, the grieving community urged Peter to visit. All the widows showed Peter how Dorcas had lived to serve (V. 39). In a miraculous act of compassion, Peter brought Dorcas back to life. The news of Dorcas’ resurrection spread, and “many people believed in the Lord” (V. 42). 우리를 들으시는 하나님
미국의 대통령 프랭클린 루즈벨트는 백악관에서 종종 길게 늘어선 내빈들을 맞이하곤 했습니다. 전하는 말에 의하면 그는 자기 말을 귀담아듣는 사람이 하나도 없어 불만이었다고 합니다. 그래서 그는 한 리셉션에서 실험해보기로 했습니다. 줄을 서서 악수를 나누는 사람들에게 그는 일일이 “내가 오늘 아침 할머니를 죽였어요.”라고 말했습니다. 그러자 내빈들은 이런 식으로 대답했습니다. “멋지군요! 계속 그렇게 하십시오. 하나님의 축복을 빕니다!” 줄의 맨 끝에 섰던 볼리비아 대사의 순서가 되어서야 비로소 대통령의 말을 제대로 들었습니다. 대사는 어찌할 바를 몰라 이렇게 나직이 속삭였습니다. “오죽했으면 그러셨겠어요.”
사람들이 정말로 당신의 말을 귀담아듣는지 궁금한 적이 있습니까? 더 나아가 하나님도 듣지 않으실까 두려우십니까? 사람들이 우리 말을 듣는지 안 듣는지는 그들의 반응이나 눈을 보고 알 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님께서 우리를 들으시는지는 어떻게 알 수 있을까요? 그저 느낌에 의지해야 할까요? 아니면 하나님께서 우리의 기도에 응답하시는지를 보고 알 수 있을까요?

HE HEARS US
United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt often endured long receiving lines at the White House. As the story is told, he complained that no one paid attention to what was said. So, he decided to experiment at a reception. To everyone who passed down the line and shook his hand, he said, “I murdered my grandmother this morning.” The guests responded with phrases like, “Marvelous! Keep up the good work. God bless you, Sir.” It wasn’t until the end of the line, greeting the ambassador from Bolivia, that his words were actually heard. Nonplussed, the ambassador whispered, “I’m sure she had it coming.”
Do you ever wonder if people are really listening? Or worse, do you fear that God isn’t listening? We can tell if people are listening based on their responses or eye contact. But how do we know if God is listening? Should we rely on feelings? Or see if God answers our prayers?
After seventy years of exile in Babylon, God promised to bring His people back to Jerusalem and secure their future (JEREMIAH 29:10–11). When they called upon Him, He heard them (V. 12). They knew that God heard their prayers because He promised to listen. And the same is true for us (1 JOHN 5:14). We don’t need to rely on feelings or wait for a sign to know that God listens to us. He’s promised to listen, and He always keeps His promises (2 CORINTHIANS 1:20). - CON CAMPBELL

하나님의 자녀
한 번은 자녀가 없는 부부들을 위한 교회 밖의 한 모임에서 강연을 했습니다. 불임으로 마음의 상처가 있는 많은 참가자들은 미래에 대한 희망을 내려놓고 있었습니다. 나도 아이 없는 삶을 살아왔기에 그들에게 용기를 주려고 이렇게 말했습니다. “여러분들은 부모가 되지 않아도 의미 있는 정체성을 가질 수 있습니다. 저는 여러분들이 기묘하고도 경이롭게 창조된 존재라는 것을 믿습니다. 그래서 무엇보다도 여러분들에겐 찾아야 할 새로운 목적이 있습니다.”
한 여성이 나중에 눈물을 글썽이며 다가왔습니다. “고맙습니다. 저는 아이가 없는 것 때문에 자신을 가치 없는 존재로 느껴왔는데, 제가 기묘하고 경이롭게 창조되었다는 그 말이 저에게 필요했어요.” 그녀에게 예수님을 믿느냐고 물으니, 그녀는 “오래 전에 하나님에게서 멀어졌어요. 하지만 하나님과 다시 관계를 맺고 싶어요.”라고 말했습니다.
이런 시간들은 복음이 얼마나 깊이가 있는 것인지를 내게 깨우쳐 줍니다. “어머니”나 “아버지” 같은 어떤 신분을 가지기가 힘든 사람들이 있습니다. 직업을 통해 얻는 신분도 실직을 하면 잃게 됩니다. 하지만 예수님을 통해 우리는 하나님의 “사랑받는 자녀”가 됩니다. 이 신분은 절대로 잃어버릴 수 없는 것입니다(에베소서 5:1). 자녀가 된 우리는 이제 “사랑 가운데 행할” 수 있습니다. 이것은 어떤 역할이나 직장에서의 위치를 초월하는 삶의 목적이 됩니다(2절).
모든 인간은 “놀랍고 신기하게 만들어졌습니다”(시편 139:14, 현대인의 성경). 그리고 예수님을 따르는 자들은 하나님의 자녀가 됩니다(요한복음 1:12-13). 한때 좌절했던 그 여인은 이 세상이 줄 수 있는 것보다 더 큰 신분과 목적을 곧 찾게 되리라는 희망을 가지고 그 자리를 떠났습니다.

CHILDREN OF GOD
I once spoke at a secular conference for childless couples. Heartbroken over their infertility, many attendees despaired at their future. Having walked the childless path too, I tried to
encourage them. “You can have a meaningful identity without becoming parents,” I said. “I believe you are fearfully and wonderfully made, and there’s new purpose for you to find.”
A woman later approached me in tears. “Thank you,” she said. “I’ve felt worthless being childless and needed to hear that I’m fearfully and wonderfully made.” I asked the woman if she was a believer in Jesus. “I walked away from God years ago,” she said. “But I need a relationship with Him again.”
Times like this remind me how profound the gospel is. Some identities, like “mother” and “father,” are hard for some to attain. Others, like those based on a career, can be lost through unemployment. But through Jesus we become God’s “dearly loved children”—an identity that can never be stolen (EPHESIANS 5:1). And then we can “walk in the way of love”—a life purpose that transcends any role or employment status (V. 2).
All human beings are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (PSALM 139:14), and those who follow Jesus become children of God (JOHN 1:12–13). Once in despair, that woman left in hope—about to find an identity and purpose bigger than this world can give. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY
