믿음을 나눔

작가이자 전도자인 베키 피퍼트가 아일랜드에서 살 때, 2년 동안 자기의 손톱을 손질해준 헤더에게 예수님의 복음을 꼭 전하고 싶었습니다. 하지만 헤더는 전혀 관심이 없어 보였습니다. 말을 꺼내기가 어려웠던 베키는 헤더를 만나기 전에 기도를 했습니다.

헤더가 손톱을 손질해주는 동안 베키는 오래된 잡지를 넘기다가 한 모델의 사진을 보고 잠시 멈췄습니다. 왜 그렇게 흥미롭게 그 사진을 보느냐고 묻는 헤더에게 베키는 그 사진 속의 모델이 자기와 가까운 친구인데 몇 년 전에 보그 잡지의 모델이었다고 설명해 주었습니다. 바로 그 친구가 하나님을 믿게 된 이야기를 베키가 들려주자 헤더는 이야기에 깊이 빠져들었습니다.

여행을 떠났다가 후에 다시 아일랜드로 돌아온 베키는 헤더가 새 곳으로 이사 갔다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 베키는 그때 일을 떠올렸습니다. “복음 전할 기회를 달라고 간구했었는데, 하나님이 응답하셨구나!”

베키는 바울 사도의 이야기에서 영감을 받아 약함 가운데 하나님께 도움을 구했던 것입니다. 바울이 연약해져서 하나님께 육체의 가시를 제거해 달라고 간청했을 때, 주님은 “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여 짐이라”(고린도후서 12:9)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 바울은 크고 작은 모든 일에 하나님을 의지하는 법을 배웠던 것입니다.

주변 사람들을 사랑할 수 있도록 하나님께 의지하며 도움을 구하면 우리에게도 진솔하게 믿음을 나눌 일이 생길 것입니다.

SHARING YOUR FAITH

When author and evangelist Becky Pippert lived in Ireland, she longed to share the good news of Jesus with Heather, who’d done her nails for two years. But Heather hadn’t seemed remotely interested. Feeling unable to start a conversation, Becky prayed before her appointment.

While Heather worked on her nails, Becky flipped through an old magazine and paused at a picture of one of the models. When Heather asked why she was so riveted, Becky told her the photograph was of a close friend who’d years before been a Vogue cover model. Becky shared some of her friend’s story of coming to faith in God, which Heather listened to with rapt attention.

Becky left for a trip, and later when she returned to Ireland, she learned that Heather had moved to a new location. Becky reflected, “I had asked God to provide an opportunity to share the gospel, and He did!”

Becky looked to God for help in her weakness, inspired by the apostle Paul. When Paul was weak and pleaded with God to remove the thorn in his flesh, the Lord said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). Paul had learned to rely on God in all things— the big and the small.

When we depend on God to help us love those around us, we too will find opportunities to share our faith authentically. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

상상해 보세요!

집을 개조해주는 유명한 텔레비전 프로그램을 보다 보면 진행자가 “한번 상상해 보세요!”라고 하는 말을 자주 듣게 됩니다. 그 말 후에 오래된 부분을 보수하고 칙칙한 벽과 바닥을 새로 칠하거나 도색해서 집이 어떻게 변할 수 있는지 공개됩니다. 어느 방송에서는 주인이 보수된 집을 보고 너무 기뻐 감격해하면서, “정말 예뻐요!”라는 말을 세 번이나 연발했습니다.

성경에서 “한번 상상해 보세요!”가 나올 수 있는 놀라운 구절 중 하나는 이사야 65:17-25입니다. 정말 눈부시게 재창조된 모습입니다! 미래의 회복된 하늘과 땅(17절)은 겉모습만 변한 것이 아니라, 깊고 실제적이며 생명을 변화시키고 보존시키는 변화를 보여줍니다. “그들이 가옥을 건축하고 그 안에 살겠고 포도나무를 심고 열매를 먹을 것”(21절)이며, 폭력은 지나간 일이 될 것입니다. “나의 성산에서는 해함도 없겠고 상함도 없으리라”(25절).

이사야 65장에 그려진 회복의 장면들은 미래에 실현될 것이지만, 우주적인 회복을 주관하시는 하나님은 지금도 인간의 삶을 바꾸는 일을 하고 계십니다. 바울 사도는 “누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고린도후서 5:17)라고 확실히 전하고 있습니다. 회복이 필요하십니까? 의심이나 불순종, 고통 때문에 인생이 망가진 적이 있습니까? 예수님을 통한 삶의 변화는 실제적이며 아름답고, 구하고 믿는 자 모두에게 가능합니다.

IMAGINE THIS!

During the course of a popular home renovation television program, viewers often hear the host say, “Imagine this!” Then she unveils what could be when old things are restored and drab walls and floors are painted or stained. In one episode, after the renovation the homeowner was so overjoyed that, along with other expressions of elation, the words “That’s beautiful!” gushed from her lips three times.

One of the stunning “Imagine this!” passages in the Bible is Isaiah 65:17–25. What a dazzling re-creation scene! The future renovation of heaven and earth is in view (V. 17), and it’s not merely cosmetic. It’s deep and real, life-altering and life-preserving. “They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit” (V. 21). Violence will be a thing of the past: “They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain” (V. 25).

While the reversals envisioned in Isaiah 65 will be realized in the future, the God who will orchestrate universal restoration is in the business of life-change now. The apostle Paul assures us, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17). In need of restoration? Has your life been broken by doubt, disobedience, and pain? Life-change through Jesus is real and beautiful and available to those who ask and believe. - ARTHUR JACKSON

하나님이 함께 계심

오브리는 연로한 아버지를 위해 양털로 속을 댄 외투를 샀지만 아버지는 그 옷을 입어 보지도 못하고 돌아가셨습니다. 그래서 20달러짜리 지폐와 격려의 말이 담긴 쪽지를 주머니에 넣고 그 외투를 기부했습니다.

90마일(약 145킬로미터) 떨어진 한 곳에서는 열 아홉 살 난 켈리가 가정의 불화를 견디다 못해 외투도 없이 집을 뛰쳐나왔습니다. 갈 곳은 딱 한 군데, 그를 위해 기도하던 할머니 집이었습니다. 켈리는 몇 시간 뒤 버스에서 내려 할머니에게 안겼습니다. 할머니는 겨울바람을 막아주며 “네 외투부터 사야 겠다.”고 말했습니다. 기독교 기증품점에서 켈리는 마음에 드는 외투를 입어 보았습니다. 주머니에 손을 넣으니 봉투가 하나 있었는데, 그 안에는 20달러 지폐와 오브리의 편지 쪽지가 들어 있었습니다.

야곱도 생명의 위협을 느끼고 어려웠던 가정을 떠났습니다(창세기 27:41-45). 밤이 되어 쉬는데 하나님께서 그의 꿈에 나타나셔서, “내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지켜주겠다”고 말씀하셨습니다(28:15). 야곱은 “하나님이......먹을 떡과 입을 옷을 주시......면 여호와께서 나의 하나님이 되실 것”(20-21절)이라고 서원했습니다.

야곱은 간소한 제단을 만들고 그곳 이름을 “하나님의 집”이라고 하였습니다(22절). 켈리는 오브리의 쪽지와 20달러짜리 지폐를 어디를 가든 간직하고 다닙니다. 이 두 사람의 이야기는 우리가 어디로 피하든 거기에도 하나님이 계심을 기억나게 해줍니다.

GOD IS THERE

Aubrey bought a fleece-lined coat for her aging father, but he died before he could wear it. So she tucked a note of encouragement with a $20 bill into the pocket and donated the jacket to charity.

Ninety miles away, unable to endure his family’s dysfunction any longer, nineteen-year-old Kelly left his house without grabbing a coat. He knew of only one place to turn—the home of his grandmother who prayed for him. Hours later he stepped off a bus and into his grandma’s arms. Shielding him from the winter wind, she said, “We’ve got to get you a coat!” At the mission store, Kelly tried on a coat he liked. Slipping his hands into the pockets he found an envelope—with a $20 bill and Aubrey’s note.

Jacob fled his dysfunctional family in fear for his life (GENESIS 27:41–45). When he stopped for the night, God revealed Himself to Jacob in a dream. “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go,” God told him (28:15). Jacob vowed, “If God will . . . give me food to eat and clothes to wear . . . , then the Lord will be my God” (VV. 20–21).

Jacob made a rudimentary altar and named the spot “God’s house” (V. 22). Kelly takes Aubrey’s note and that $20 wherever he goes. Each serves as a reminder that no matter where we run, God is there. - TIM GUSTAFSON

우리를 위해 싸워 주시는 하나님

그 부상 입은 말은 ‘북 치는 소년’으로 불렸습니다. 역사적으로 유명한 ‘경기병대의 돌격 작전’(역주: 1854년 영국과 러시아 사이의 전투) 에서 영국 병사들을 태웠던 112필의 기마들 중 하나였습니다. 이 말을 탔던 지휘관 드 살리스 중령은 말이 아주 용감하고 활약이 컸기에 그의 용맹한 부하들과 마찬가지로 메달을 받을 자격이 있다고 판단했습니다. 적에 대한 군사작전은 실패했지만 시상은 이루어졌습니다. 그리고 말들의 담대함과 기병대의 용맹으로 그 전투는 오늘날까지도 영국군에게 가장 위대한 전투 중 하나로 꼽히고 있습니다.

그 싸움은 옛 잠언의 지혜를 잘 보여줍니다. “싸울 날을 위하여 마병을 예비하거니와 이김은 여호와께 있느니라”(잠언 21:31). 성경은 이 원리를 이렇게 분명히 말하고 있습니다. “너희 하나님 여호와는 너희와 함께 행하시며 너희를 위하여 너희 적군과 싸우시고 구원하실 것이라”(신명기 20:4). 실제로 죽음의 위협 앞에서도 바울 사도는 “우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 우리에게 승리를 주시는 하나님께 감사하노라”(고린도전서 15:56–57)라고 썼습니다.

우리는 이것을 알지만, 여전히 삶의 힘든 시험에 대비해야 합니다. 성공적인 사역을 위해 우리는 공부하고 일하고 기도합니다. 아름다운 예술 작품을 만들기 위해 기량을 갈고 닦으며, 산을 정복하기 위해 장비를 갖추고 체력을 키웁니다. 그렇게 준비될 때 그리스도의 강건한 사랑으로 넉넉히 이기게 됩니다.

HE WILL FIGHT FOR YOU

The wounded horse was named Drummer Boy, one of 112 mounts carrying British soldiers into battle during the famed Charge of the Light Brigade. The animal showed such bravery and stamina that his assigned commander, Lieutenant Colonel de Salis, decided his horse deserved a medal as much as his valiant men. This was done even though their military action against enemy forces failed. Yet the cavalry’s valor, matched by the courage of their horses, established the clash as one of Britain’s greatest military moments, still celebrated today.

The confrontation, however, shows the wisdom of an ancient Bible proverb: “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord” (PROVERBS 21:31). Scripture affirms this principle clearly. “For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory” (DEUTERONOMY 20:4). Indeed, even against the sting of death, wrote the apostle Paul, “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:56–57).

Knowing this, our task still is to be prepared for life’s tough tests. To build a ministry, we study, work, and pray. To create beautiful art, we master a skill. To conquer a mountain, we secure our tools and build our strength. Then prepared, we’re more than conquerors through Christ’s strong love. - PATRICIA RAYBON

하나님과 함께 하는 시간

노먼 맥클린의 걸작 ‘흐르는 강물처럼’은 서부 몬태나에서 장로교 목사인 아버지와 함께 살며 성장해 가는 두 소년에 관한 이야기입니다. 주일 아침마다 노먼과 그의 동생 폴은 아버지가 설교하시는 교회에 갔습니다. 주일 저녁이 되면 또 다른 예배가 있었고 아버지는 또 설교하곤 했습니다. 그러나 이 두 예배 사이에 시간이 빌 때 아버지는 “긴장을 푸시면서” 아이들과 함께 언덕과 개울을 걸었습니다. 그것은 아버지에게는 “영혼이 회복되고 저녁 설교를 위해 다시 충만해지도록” 일부러 일에서 멀어지려는 것이었습니다.

복음서 전반에 걸쳐 예수님은 산과 성읍에서 많은 사람들을 가르치시며 그에게 온 아픈 자들과 병든 사람들을 치료하셨습니다. 이 모든 일은 “잃어버린 자를 찾아 구원하려는”(누가복음 19:10) 인자의 사명에 따라 행해진 것이었습니다. 그러나 주님께서 “자주 조용한 곳으로 가셨다”(5:16, 현대인의 성경)는 언급도 있습니다. 주님은 그곳에서 하나님 아버지와 교제하시며
다시 한 번 주님의 사명으로 되돌아가기 위해 새로워지고 회복되는 시간을 보내셨습니다.

우리가 최선을 다해 섬기려고 할 때 예수님도 종종 잠시 쉬셨다는 것을 기억하는 것이 좋습니다. 이런 쉼이 예수님에게 중요했다면 우리에게는 얼마나 더 그렇겠습니까? 우리를 다시 충만하게 채우시는 우리 하나님 아버지와 정기적으로 시간을 보낼 수 있기를 소원합니다.

SPENDING TIME WITH GOD

A River Runs Through It is Norman Maclean’s masterful story of two boys growing up in western Montana with their father, a Presbyterian minister. On Sunday mornings, Norman and his brother, Paul, went to church where they heard their father preach. Once Sunday evening rolled around, there was another service and their father would preach again. But between those two services, they were free to walk the hills and streams with him “while he unwound between services.” It was an intentional withdrawing on their father’s part to “restore his soul and be filled again to overflowing for the evening sermon.”

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is seen teaching multitudes on hillsides and cities, and healing the sick and diseased who were brought to Him. All this interaction was in line with the Son of Man’s mission “to seek and to save the lost” (LUKE 19:10). But it’s also noted that He “often withdrew to lonely places” (5:16). His time there was spent communing with the Father, being renewed and restored to step back once more into His mission.

In our faithful efforts to serve, it’s good for us to remember that Jesus often withdrew. If this practice was important for Jesus, how much more so for us? May we regularly spend time with our Father, who can fill us again to overflowing. - JOHN BLASE

우리의 문제보다 크신 이

공룡이 살아 있을 때의 모습이 어땠을 것이라고 생각하십니까? 큰 이빨? 비늘 덮인 피부? 긴 꼬리? 화가인 카렌 카는 이 멸종된 생명체를 커다란 벽화로 재현했습니다. 그녀의 작품 중 하나는 높이가 20 피트(약 6미터), 길이가 60피트(약 18미터)가 넘습니다. 그 크기 때문에 샘 노블 오클라호마 자연사 박물관의 섹션에 설치하기 위해서 여러 전문가들이 동원됐습니다.

그 벽화 앞에 서면 공룡으로 인해 작아지는 느낌을 피할 수 없습니다. 나는 “베헤못”(욥기 40:15)이라는 강력한 짐승에 대한 하나님의 설명을 읽을 때도 비슷한 느낌을 갖습니다. 이 큰 짐승은 마치 소처럼 풀을 우적우적 씹어 먹고, 나무 기둥 만한 꼬리를 가지고 있었으며, 그 뼈는 쇠막대기와 같았습니다. 풀을 뜯으며 언덕을 가로질러 걷다가 이따금 멈춰 주변 늪에서 휴식을 취했습니다. 큰 홍수가 났을 때도 베헤못은 눈 하나 깜짝하지 않았습니다.

그것을 만드신 분 말고는 어느 누구도 이 엄청난 동물을 길들일 수 없었습니다(19절). 하나님은 욥의 문제들이 그의 생명에 불길한 그림자를 드리울 때 이 사실을 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 어디를 봐도 슬픔과 당혹과 좌절뿐이었던 욥은 하나님께 질문하기 시작했습니다. 그러나 욥은 하나님의 응답을 통해 문제의 진짜 크기를 보게 되었습니다. 하나님은 욥의 모든 문제들보다 더 크셨고, 욥이 혼자 힘으로 해결할 수 없었던 문제들을 해결하기에 충분히 강한 분이셨습니다. 마침내 욥은 인정하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “주님께서는 못하시는 일이 없으시다는 것을 이제 저는 알았습니다”(42:2, 새번역).

BIGGER THAN OUR PROBLEMS

What do you imagine dinosaurs looked like when they were alive? Big teeth? Scaly skin? Long tails? Artist Karen Carr recreates these extinct creatures in large murals. One of her panoramas is over twenty feet tall and sixty feet long. Because of its size, it required a crew of experts to install it in sections where it resides in the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.

It would be hard to stand in front of this mural without feeling dwarfed by the dinosaurs. I get a similar sensation when I read God’s description of the powerful animal called “Behemoth” (JOB 40:15). This big guy munched grass like an ox and had a tail the size of a tree trunk. His bones were like iron pipes. He lumbered through the hills grazing, stopping occasionally to relax at the local swamp. When floodwaters surged, Behemoth never raised an eyebrow.

No one could tame this incredible creature—except its Maker (V. 19). God reminded Job of this truth during a time when Job’s problems had cast ominous shadows over his life. Grief, bewilderment, and frustration filled his field of vision until he began to question God. But God’s response helped Job see the real size of things. God was bigger than all his issues and powerful enough to handle problems that Job couldn’t resolve on his own. In the end, Job conceded, “I know that you can do all things” (42:2). - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

평화의 삶

호주 퍼스에는 중독으로 힘들어하는 사람들이 도움을 받을 수 있는 샬롬 하우스라는 곳이 있습니다. 중독자들은 샬롬 하우스에서 하나님의 ‘샬롬’(히브리어로 ‘평화’)을 전해주는 헌신적인 직원들을 만나게 됩니다. 그곳에서는 마약, 술, 도박, 그리고 다른 파괴적인 행동에 중독되어 무너진 삶들이 하나님의 사랑으로 변화되고 있습니다.

성령님이 우리를 하나님의 ‘샬롬’에 거하게 하시면 우리의 필요와 염려를 하나님 아버지께 가지고 나가는 법을 배우게 됩니다. 더 나아가 이것은 “모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강”, 즉 “그리스도 예수 안에서 [우리의] 마음과 생각을 지키는” 평화를 가져다줍니다(빌립보서 4:7).

그리스도의 영 안에서 우리의 마음은 진정한 ‘샬롬’을 경험합니다.

THE LIFE OF PEACE

In Perth, Australia, there’s a place called Shalom House where men struggling with addictions go to find help. At Shalom House, they’ll meet caring staff members who introduce them to God’s shalom (Hebrew for peace). Lives crushed under the weight of addictions to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and other destructive behaviors are being transformed by the love of God.

Central to this transformation is the message of the cross. The broken people of Shalom House discover that through the resurrection of Jesus, they can find their own lives resurrected. In Christ, we gain true peace and healing.

Peace isn’t merely the absence of conflict; it’s the presence of God’s wholeness. All of us need this shalom, and it’s only found in Christ and His Spirit. This is why Paul pointed the Galatians to the Spirit’s transformational work. As the Holy Spirit operates in our lives, He generates His fruit that includes love, joy, patience, and more (GALATIANS 5:22–23). He gives us that vital element of true, enduring peace.

As the Spirit enables us to live in God’s shalom, we learn to bring our needs and concerns to our heavenly Father. This in turn brings us “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding”— the peace that “will guard [our] hearts and [our] minds in Christ Jesus” (PHILIPPIANS 4:7).

믿음의 길

미국과 트리니다드 토바고가 맞붙은 2017년 월드컵 예선 경기에서 소카 전사들(역주: 트리니다드 토바고 축구 국가대표팀)은 그들보다 랭킹이 56위나 높은 미국 남자 국가대표팀을 꺾고 전 세계를 놀라게 했습니다. 2:1이라는 예상 밖의 결과로 미국팀은 2018년 월드컵에서 탈락했습니다.

미국의 인구와 자원은 카리브 해의 이 작은 나라와는 비교도 안 되는 수준이었기 때문에 트리니다드 토바고의 승리는 어떤 면에서 전혀 예상치 못한 일이었습니다. 그러나 아무리 겉보기에 압도적으로 유리해도 투지로 뭉친 소카 전사들을 꺾을 수는 없었습니다.

이와 비슷하게 소수의 전사들과 대규모 군대 사이에 일어난 뜻밖의 결과로는 기드온과 미디안의 이야기가 있습니다. 이스라엘에는 실제로 3만 명이 넘는 군사가 있었지만 하나님은 단 300명의 용사로 줄이셨습니다. 그것은 그들의 승리가 군대의 규모나 금고에 있는 돈의 액수, 지도자의 능력이 아니라 하나님께 달려 있다는 것을 이스라엘로 알게 하시기 위함이었습니다(사사기 7:1-8).

눈에 보이거나 측정할 수 있는 것들을 믿고 신뢰하고 싶은 유혹을 받을 수도 있지만, 그것은 믿음의 길이 아닙니다. 어려울 때가 많아도 하나님께 의지하여 “주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여”(에베소서 6:10) 지고자 하면, 힘들고 위축될 때라도 용기와 자신감을 가지고 상황들을 맞이할 수 있습니다. 주님의 임재와 능력은 우리 안에서, 그리고 우리를 통해 놀라운 일을 행할 수 있습니다.

THE WAY OF FAITH

In a 2017 World Cup qualifying match that pitted the US against Trinidad and Tobago, the Soca Warriors shocked the world when they beat the US men’s national team, a team ranked fifty-six places higher. The 2-1 upset eliminated the US team from the 2018 World Cup.

Trinidad and Tobago’s victory was so unexpected in part because the United States’ population and resources dwarfed those of the small Caribbean nation. But those seemingly insurmountable advantages weren’t enough to defeat the passionate Soca Warriors.

The story of Gideon and the Midianites features a similar upset, one between a small group of fighters and a large army. The Israelite army actually had more than thirty-thousand fighters, but the Lord whittled the army down to just three hundred warriors so the nation would learn that their success was dependent on God—not the size of their army, the amount of money in their treasury, or the skill of their leaders (JUDGES 7:1–8).

It can be tempting to put our trust and confidence in things we can see or measure, but that’s not the way of faith. Though it’s often difficult, when we’re willing to depend on God, to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” (EPHESIANS 6:10), we can go into situations with courage and confidence, even when we feel overwhelmed and unqualified. 예수님 의자

내 친구 마지는 성경공부 모임에서 태미를 만났을 때 서로에게 공통점이 거의 없다는 것을 알았습니다. 그러나 마지는 그녀와 친구가 되었고 새로운 친구로부터 귀중한 교훈을 얻었습니다.

성경공부 모임에 가 본 적이 없었던 태미는 그 모임에서 다른 여성들이 하나님과 대화한다는 말을 듣고는 이해할 수가 없었습니다. 자기는 한 번도 경험해보지 못한 일이었으니까요.

하나님의 음성을 너무나 듣고 싶었던 태미는 어떤 행동을 취했습니다. 그러고 나서 얼마 후 마지에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 오래된 나무 의자를 옆에 두고 성경을 공부할 때마다 예수님께 그 의자에 앉으시라고 말씀드려.” 그런 다음 눈에 띄는 성경 구절이 나타날 때마다 의자에 분필로 그 구절을 쓴다고 설명했습니다. 그것은 태미의 특별한 “예수님 의자”가 되었고, 그 의자는 성경을 통해 그녀에게 직접 들려주시는 하나님의 말씀으로 덮이게 되었습니다.

마지는 말합니다. “[예수님 의자]가 [태미의] 삶을 바꾸었어요. 성경이 개인적으로 다가오니 영적으로 성장하고 있어요.”

예수님은 유대인 신자들에게 말씀하실 때 “너희가 내 말에 거하면 참으로 내 제자가 되고 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라”(요한복음 8:31- 32)고 하셨습니다. 의자에 주님의 말씀을 쓰거나, 외우거나, 행동으로 옮기는 등, 어떤 식으로 하든 주님의 가르침을 붙잡읍시다. 그리스도의 말씀에 담긴 진리와 지혜는 우리를 그분 안에서 자라게 하고 자유롭게 해줍니다.

THE JESUS CHAIR

When my friend Marge met Tami at a Bible study meeting, she noticed that they seemed to have little in common. But Marge befriended her, and she learned a valuable lesson from her new friend.

Tami had never been to a Bible study, and she was having a hard time understanding something the other women in the study talked about: that God communicated with them—something she’d never experienced.

She so desired to hear from God that she took action. Later, she told Marge. “I set aside an old wooden chair, and every time I study my Bible, I ask Jesus to come sit in it.” Then Tami explained that whenever a verse stood out to her, she would write out the verse in chalk on the chair. It’s become her special “Jesus chair,” and she’s filled it up with God’s messages to her directly from the Bible.

Marge says, “[The Jesus Chair] has changed [Tami’s] life. She’s growing spiritually because Scripture is becoming personal.”

While speaking to Jewish believers, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (JOHN 8:31–32). Let’s hold to His teaching, whether it means writing His words on a chair, memorizing them, or seeking to put them into action. The truth and wisdom of Christ’s messages help us grow in Him and set us free. - DAVE BRANON

우리 하나님 아버지의 돌보심

‘탁!’ 하는 소리에 고개를 들어 그쪽으로 귀를 기울였습니다. 유리창에 자국이 묻어있는 것을 보고 테라스 쪽을 보니 거기서 파닥거리고 있는 새를 발견하고는 마음이 아팠습니다. 이 연약한 새를 꼭 돕고 싶었습니다.

마태복음 10장에서 예수님은 앞에 놓인 위험에 대해 제자들에게 경고하시면서 그들을 위로하시려고 참새를 보살피시는 하나님 아버지에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 그러고는 열 두 제자에게 지시하시며 “더러운 귀신을 쫓아내며 모든 병과 모든 약한 것을 고치는 권능을 주셨습니다”(1절). 그렇게 할 수 있는 능력이 제자들에게 대단하게 보였을지 모르지만, 통치자나 자신들의 가족, 그리고 함정에 빠뜨리려는 악한 자들을 비롯한 많은 사람들이 그들을 대적하게 될 것이었습니다(16-28절).

그런 뒤 예수님은 10:29-31에서 제자들에게 절대로 하나님의 돌보심에서 벗어나지 않을 것이므로 어떤 일을 만나든지 두려워하지 말라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 “참새 두 마리가 한 앗사리온에 팔리지 않느냐 그러나 너희 아버지께서 허락하지 아니하시면 그 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라...... 두려워하지 말라 너희는 많은 참새보다 귀하니라”라고 하셨습니다. 종일 그 새를 살폈는데, 살아있지만 움직이지를 않았습니다. 그 후 늦은 저녁에 보니 새는 사라졌습니다. 나는 그 새가 살아났기를 기도했습니다. 내가 이처럼 새를 생각했는데, 하나님은 틀림없이 더 많이 생각하셨을 것입니다. 그런 하나님께서 당신과 나를 얼마나 많이 보살피고 계시는지 생각해 보십시오!

OUR FATHER’S CARE

Thwack! I looked up and craned my ear toward the sound. Spotting a smudge on the windowpane, I peered out onto the deck and discovered the still-beating body of a bird. My heart hurt. I longed to help the fragile feathered being.

In Matthew 10, Jesus described His Father’s care for sparrows in order to comfort the disciples as He warned of upcoming dangers. He offered instructions to the twelve as He “gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness” (V. 1). While the power to do such deeds might have seemed grand to the disciples, many would oppose them, including governing authorities, their own families, and the ensnaring grip of the evil one (VV. 16–28).

Then in 10:29–31, Jesus told them not to fear whatever they faced because they would never be out of their Father’s care. “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?” He asked. “Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. . . . So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” I checked on the bird throughout the day, each time finding it alive but unmoved. Then, late into the evening, it was gone. I prayed it had survived. Surely, if I cared this much about the bird, God cared even more. Imagine how much He cares for you and me! - ELISA MORGAN
