하나님의 도움을 구하기

1800년대 후반 메뚜기 떼가 미네소타 주로 내려와 무려 5년간 농작물을 훼손시켰습니다. 농부들은 타르를 사용하여 메뚜기를 잡고 밭을 태워 메뚜기 알을 없애려고 노력했습니다. 굶주림 직전까지 간 많은 사람들은 절실한 마음으로 주 전역에 걸쳐 기도의 날을 정해서 함께 하나님의 도움을 구하기를 원했습니다. 이에 동의한 주지사는 4월 26일을 기도의 날로 잡았습니다.

함께 기도하기를 마친 후 며칠 동안 날씨가 따뜻하여 메뚜기 알들이 부화되기 시작했습니다. 하지만 나흘 후 놀랍게도 갑자기 온도가 영하로 떨어져 애벌레들이 모두 죽어버려서 많은 사람들이 크게 기뻐했습니다. 이제 미네소타 주 농부들은 다시 옥수수와 밀, 그리고 귀리를 추수할 수 있게 되었습니다.

여호사밧 왕의 통치 기간 동안 하나님의 백성들을 구원한 것 또한 기도였습니다. 강력한 군대가 그를 대적하러 온다는 소식을 접한 여호사밧은 하나님의 백성들을 불러서 기도하고 금식하게 했습니다. 백성들은 이전에 하나님께서 어떻게 그들을 구하셨는지 기도로 하나님께 상기시켰습니다. 그리고 여호사밧은 “견책이나 전염병이나 기근” 같은 재난이 그들에게 닥쳐온다면, 하나님께서 들으시고 구해 주실 테니까 하나님께 부르짖겠다고 말했습니다 (역대하 20:9).

적군의 침략으로부터 그의 백성들을 구해주신 하나님은 우리가 고통 중에 부르짖을 때 들으십니다. 그것이 인간관계의 문제이건, 자연재해의 위협이건, 모든 염려를 기도로 하나님께 올려 드리십시오. 그분께는 어려운 일이란 없습니다.

SEEKING GOD’S HELP

For five years in the late 1800s, grasshoppers descended on Minnesota, destroying the crops. Farmers tried trapping the grasshoppers in tar and burning their fields to kill the eggs. Feeling desperate, and on the brink of starvation, many people sought a statewide day of prayer, yearning to seek God’s help together. The governor relented, setting aside April 26 to pray.

In the days after the collective prayer, the weather warmed and the eggs started to come to life. But then four days later a drop in temperature surprised and delighted many, for the freezing temperatures killed the larvae. Minnesotans once again would harvest their crops of corn, wheat, and oats.

Prayer was also behind the saving of God’s people during the reign of King Jehoshaphat. When the king learned that a vast army was coming against him, he called God’s people to pray and fast. The people reminded God how He’d saved them in times past. And Jehoshaphat said that if calamity came upon them, “whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine,” they would cry out to God knowing that He would hear and save them (2 CHRONICLES 20:9).

God rescued His people from the invading armies, and He hears us when we cry out to Him in distress. Whatever your concern— whether a relationship issue or something threatening from the natural world—lift it to God in prayer. Nothing is too hard for Him.

진짜 기독교

여러 해 전 기독교 단체에 구직 신청을 했을 때 술과 담배 및 특정 유흥 물품 사용에 관한 엄격한 규칙 목록을 받게 되었습니다. “우리는 직원들이 그리스도인답게 행동하기를 기대합니다.”라는 게 그 설명이었습니다. 나는 신앙심을 떠나서 그런 일들을 하지 않았기에 동의하는 데 어려움은 없었지만 마음속에 이런 반감이 들었습니다. ‘오만, 아둔함, 무례함, 영적 무관심, 남을 비판하는 것 등, 우리가 하지 말아야 할 이런 목록은 왜 없는 것일까? 이런 것들이 전혀 언급되어 있지 않네.’

예수님을 따르는 삶은 어떤 규칙 목록으로 규정될 수 없습니다. 그것은 양적으로 표현하기 어려운 미묘한 삶의 질의 문제이며, “아름다움”으로 가장 잘 표현될 수 있습니다.

마태복음 5:3-10에 기록된 팔복은 그 아름다움을 잘 요약하고 있습니다. 주님의 성령과 함께 거하고 그를 의지하는 자들은 겸손하며 자신을 드러내지 않습니다. 그들은 다른 이들의 고통에 깊이 공감합니다. 그들은 온유하고 친절합니다. 자신에게서는 물론 다른 사람들에게도 선함을 희구합니다. 그들은 노력했지만 실패한 사람들에게 자비로우며, 일편단심으로 예수님을 사랑합니다. 그들은 평화를 사랑하며 평화의 유산을 남깁니다. 그들은 자신을 학대하는 이들에게도 친절하며 악을 선으로 갚습니다. 그리고 그들은 깊은 의미로 “행복”을 뜻하는 ‘복 있는 자들’입니다.

이러한 삶은 다른 이들의 관심을 끌게 되며, 예수님께 나아가 그것을 구하는 이들에게 주어집니다.

AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANITY

I applied for a position in a Christian organization years ago and was presented with a list of legalistic rules having to do with the use of alcohol, tobacco, and certain forms of entertainment. “We expect Christian behavior from our employees” was the explanation. I could agree with this list because I, for reasons mostly unrelated to my faith, didn’t do those things. But my argumentative side thought, Why don’t they have a list about not being arrogant, insensitive, harsh, spiritually indifferent, and critical? None of these were addressed.

Following Jesus can’t be defined by a list of rules. It’s a subtle quality of life that’s difficult to quantify but can best be described as “beautiful.”

The Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3–10 sum up that beauty: Those who are indwelt by and dependent on the Spirit of Jesus are humble and self-effacing. They’re deeply touched by the suffering of others. They’re gentle and kind. They long for goodness in themselves and in others. They’re merciful to those who struggle and fail. They’re single-minded in their love for Jesus. They’re peaceful and leave behind a legacy of peace. They’re kind to those who misuse them, returning good for evil. And they’re blessed, a word that means “happy” in the deepest sense.

This kind of life attracts the attention of others and belongs to those who come to Jesus and ask Him for it.

눈앞에 펼쳐진 하나님의 능력

번개를 동반한 폭우가 내리던 날 나는 마루에서 여섯 살 된 딸과 함께 창문 밖의 장관을 내다보고 있었습니다. 딸은 “와! 하나님 참 크시다.” 라고 외쳤습니다. 나도 동감했습니다. 우리 둘은 참으로 작은 존재였고, 하나님은 참으로 권능 있는 분이라는 것이 분명했습니다. 갑자기 욥기의 말씀이 떠올랐습니다. “광명이 어느 길로 뻗치며 동풍이 어느 길로 땅에 흩어지느냐” (욥기 38:24).

욥은 하나님의 능력을 다시 되새길 필요가 있었습니다 (34-41절) . 그의 삶은 완전히 무너졌습니다. 자녀들은 죽었으며, 그는 빈털터리가 되었고 병들었습니다. 친구들의 마음도 떠났고, 아내는 그에게 믿음을 버리라고 부추겼습니다 (2:9) . 결국 욥은 하나님께 “왜입니까?” (24장) 물었고, 하나님은 폭풍 속에서 응답해주셨습니다 (38장).

삶이 무너져 내릴 때 가끔은 그냥 마루에 누워 번개를 쳐다보며 만물을 창조하신 크신 하나님과 우리를 돌보시는 그분의 크신 사랑을 떠올리는 것이 가장 큰 위안이 되기도 합니다. 아니면, 평소에 좋아하던 하나님의 능력과 위대하심을 노래하는 찬양을 불러보는 것도 도움이 됩니다.

GOD’S POWER ON DISPLAY

It was a lightning storm, and my six-year-old daughter and I were on the floor watching the dazzling display through the glass door. She kept repeating, “Wow! God is so big.” I felt the same way. It was obvious to both of us how small we were and how powerful God must be. Lines from the book of Job flashed through my mind, “What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?” (JOB 38:24)

Job needed to be reminded of God’s power (VV. 34–41) . His life had fallen apart. His children were dead. He was broke. He was sick. His friends offered no empathy. His wife encouraged him to abandon his faith (2:9) . Eventually, Job asked God, “Why?” (CH. 24) and He responded out of a storm (CH. 38).

God reminded Job of His control over the physical attributes of the world (CH. 38) . This comforted him and he responded, “My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you” (42:5) . In other words, “Now I get it, God! I see that you don’t fit into my box.”

When life falls apart, sometimes the most comforting thing we can do is to lie on the floor and watch the lightning—to be reminded that the God who created the world is big enough and loving enough to take care of us too. We may even start singing our favorite worship songs that tell of the might and greatness of our God.

단호한 거절

제2차 세계대전 당시 나치가 프란츠 예거슈테터를 징집했을 때 그는 기본 군사훈련은 마쳤지만 아돌프 히틀러에 대한 개인적인 충성 서약을 거부했습니다. 당국은 프란츠를 그의 농장으로 돌려보냈다가, 나중에 그를 다시 현역으로 소환했습니다. 하지만 예거슈테터는 나치의 이념을 가까이서 보고 유대인 학살에 대해 알게 된 후 하나님께 헌신한 사람으로서 절대 나치를 위해 싸울 수 없다고 결심했습니다. 결국 그는 체포되어 아내와 세 딸을 남겨둔 채 사형 선고를 받았습니다.

FIRM REFUSAL

When the Nazis drafted Franz Jägerstätter during World War II, he completed military basic training but refused to take the required pledge of personal loyalty to Adolf Hitler. Authorities allowed Franz to return to his farm, but they later summoned him to active duty. After seeing Nazi ideology up close and learning of the Jewish genocide, however, Jägerstätter decided his loyalty to God meant he could never fight for the Nazis. He was arrested and sentenced to execution, leaving behind his wife and three daughters.

Over the years, many believers in Jesus—under peril of death—have offered a firm refusal when commanded to disobey God. The story of Daniel is one such story. When a royal edict threatened that anyone “who pray[ed] to any god or human being except [the king]” (DANIEL 6:12) would be thrown into the lions’ den, Daniel discarded safety and remained faithful. “Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before” (V. 10) . The prophet would bend his knee to God—and only God—no matter the cost.

Sometimes, our choice is clear. Though everyone around us implores us to go along with prevailing opinion—though our own reputation or well-being may be at risk—may we never turn from our obedience to God. Sometimes, even at great cost, all we can offer is a firm refusal.

하나님의 회복 방법

뮤지컬 ‘가장 위대한 쇼맨’에 나오는 가장 감동적인 노래 중 하나는 “이제부터”라는 곡입니다. 주인공이 가족과 친구들에게 상처를 주었음을 고통스럽게 깨닫고 부르는 이 노래는 집으로 돌아온 것에 대한 기쁨과 우리가 이미 가진 것이 너무 많다는 것을 깨달은 기쁨을 노래하고 있습니다.

호세아서의 결론도 하나님께 돌아오는 이들에게 허락하시는 회복에 대한 기막힌 기쁨과 감사로 그 뮤지컬의 노래와 비슷한 색조를 띱니다. 이 책의 대부분은 하나님과 그의 백성들의 관계를 정절을 지키지 못한 배우자와의 관계로 비교하면서, 하나님을 사랑하지 못하고 하나님을 위해 살지 못했던 이스라엘 민족을 비통해 하고 있습니다.

하지만 14장에서 호세아는 하나님을 저버리고 슬픔에 빠진 자들이 그분께 돌아올 때 (1-3절) 그들에게 값없이 주어지는 하나님의 한없는 사랑과 은혜와 회복의 약속을 강조합니다. 하나님은 “내가 그들의 반역을 고치고 기쁘게 그들을 사랑하리라” (4절) 고 약속하십니다. 새벽이슬 같은 하나님의 은혜로 그의 백성들이 “백합화같이 피고” “곡식같이 풍성하게” 될 때, 회복 못할 정도로 망가진 것들이 다시 온전해지고 풍요로워질 것입니다 (5-7절).

우리가 살면서 다른 사람들에게 상처를 줬거나 하나님의 선하심을 당연한 것으로 여겼을 때, 우리가 받은 선한 선물들이 영원히 훼손되었다고 생각하기 쉽습니다. 하지만 겸손히 하나님께로 돌이킬 때 하나님의 사랑이 언제나 다가와 품어주고 회복시켜 주는 것을 알게 됩니다.

GOD’S RESTORING WAYS

One of the most moving songs in the musical The Greatest Showman is “From Now On.” Sung after the main character comes to some painful self-realizations about the ways he’s wounded family and friends, the song celebrates the joy of coming back home and finding that what we already have is more than enough.

The book of Hosea concludes with a similar tone—one of breathless joy and gratitude at the restoration God makes possible for those who return to Him. Much of the book, which compares the relationship between God and His people to a relationship with an unfaithful spouse, grieves Israel’s failures to love Him and live for Him.

But in chapter 14, Hosea lifts up the promise of God’s boundless love, grace, and restoration—freely available to those who return to Him heartbroken over the ways they’ve abandoned Him (VV. 1–3). “I will heal their waywardness,” God promises, “and love them freely” (V. 4). And what had seemed broken beyond repair will once more find wholeness and abundance, as God’s grace, like dew, causes His people to “blossom like a lily” and “flourish like the grain” (VV. 5–7).

When we’ve hurt others or taken for granted God’s goodness in our life, it’s easy to assume we’ve forever marred the good gifts we’ve been given. But when we humbly turn to Him, we find His love is always reaching to embrace and restore.

편견과 용서

불공정을 바로잡자는 설교를 들은 한 교인이 눈물을 흘리며 목사에게 다가와 자신의 편견 때문에 흑인 목사 청빙에 찬성하지 않았던 사실을 고백하며 용서를 구했습니다. “부디 저를 용서해 주시기를 바랍니다. 이 쓰레기 같은 편견과 인종 차별이 제 아이들의 삶에 전해지는 것을 원하지 않습니다. 목사님의 청빙을 반대했었는데, 제가 잘못했습니다.” 그의 눈물과 고백은 목사의 눈물과 용서로 이어졌습니다. 일주일 후 하나님이 그 교인의 마음에 어떻게 역사하셨는지 간증을 듣고 전 교인이 무척 기뻐했습니다.

예수님의 제자이자 초대 교회의 최고 지도자였던 베드로 역시 이방인에 관한 그의 잘못된 관념을 바로잡아야 했습니다. 당시에 이방인(부정하다고 여겨졌던 부류)과 함께 먹고 마시는 것은 사회적, 종교적 규범을 위반하는 것이었습니다. 베드로는 말했습니다. “유대 사람으로서 이방 사람과 사귀거나
가까이하는 일이 불법이라는 것을 여러분도 아십니다” (사도행전 10:28, 현대인의 성경) . 그러면서도 바로 하나님의 초자연적인 활동을 생각하면 (9-23절) 자신은 “아무도 속되다 하거나 깨끗하지 않다 하지 않겠다” (28절) 고 확신하며 말할 수 있었습니다.

하나님은 다른 사람들에 대한 우리의 잘못된 시각을 고치시려고 말씀의 선포나 성령께서 주시는 확신, 그리고 인생의 경험들을 통해 우리 마음속에 끊임없이 역사하십니다. 그래서 “하나님은 사람의 외모를 보지 아니하신다” (34 절) 는 것을 깨닫도록 도와주십니다.

PREJUDICE AND FORGIVENESS

After hearing a message about correcting injustice, a church member approached the pastor weeping, asking for forgiveness and confessing that he hadn’t voted in favor of calling the black minister to be pastor of their church because of his own prejudice. “I really need you to forgive me. I don’t want the junk of prejudice and racism spilling over into my kids’ lives. I didn’t vote for you, and I was wrong.” His tears and confession were met with the tears and forgiveness of the minister. A week later, the entire church rejoiced upon hearing the man’s testimony of how God had worked in his heart.

Even Peter, a disciple of Jesus and a chief leader in the early church, had to be corrected because of his ill-conceived notions about non-Jewish people. Eating and drinking with gentiles (who were considered unclean), was a violation of social and religious protocol. Peter said, “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile” (ACTS 10:28) . It took nothing less than the supernatural activity of God (VV. 9–23) to convince him that he “should not call anyone impure or unclean” (V. 28) .

Through the preaching of Scripture, the conviction of the Spirit, and life experiences, God continues to work in human hearts to correct our misguided perspectives about others. He helps us to see that “God does not show favoritism” (V. 34).

그 의사는 하나님과 그분의 능력에 힘입어야 한다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그녀는 수술을 할 수 있는 훈련을 받았고 기술도 있었지만, 그럼에도 자기의 손을 이끌어 줄 하나님의 지혜와 힘과 도움이 필요했습니다(시편 121:1-2).

고도로 숙련된 사람들이든 그렇지 않은 사람이든, 하나님이 필요하다는 것을 인정하는 사람들의 이야기를 들으면 힘이 납니다. 사실 우리 모두는 하나님이 필요하기 때문입니다. 그분은 하나님이시지만 우리는 아닙니다. 오직 하나님만이 “우리가 구하거나 생각하는 모든 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실 이”(에베소서 3:20)십니다. 주님은 우리보다 “훨씬 더 많은 것을 하실 수 있는 분이기에” 겸손한 마음으로 주님께 배우고 기도로 맡겨드리도록 합시다.

THE POWER OF GOD

Rebecca and Russell’s doctors told them they couldn’t have children. But God had other ideas—and ten years later Rebecca conceived. The pregnancy was a healthy one; and when the contractions started, the couple excitedly rushed to the hospital. Yet the hours of labor grew long and more intense, and Rebecca’s body still wasn’t progressing enough for delivery. Finally, the doctor decided she needed to perform an emergency C-section. Fearful, Rebecca sobbed for her baby and herself. The doctor calmly assured her, saying, “I will do my best, but we’re going to pray to God because He can do more.” She prayed with Rebecca, and fifteen minutes later, Bruce, a healthy baby boy, was born.

That doctor understood her dependence on God and His power. She recognized that although she had the training and skill to do the surgery, she still needed God’s wisdom, strength, and help to guide her hands (PSALM 121:1–2).

It’s encouraging to hear about highly skilled people, or of anyone, who recognize they need Him—because, honestly, we all do. He’s God; we’re not. He alone “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (EPHESIANS 3:20). Let’s have a humble heart to learn from Him and to trust Him in prayer “because He can do more” than we ever could.- ANNE CETAS

어머니는 일생 동안 많은 일에 헌신하셨는데 그중에서도 어린아이들에게 예수님을 전하려는 열정은 한결같았습니다. 어머니가 공개적으로 반대 의견을 표하는 것을 몇 번 본 적이 있는데, 그것은 모두 누군가가 그들이 생각하기에 더 “중요한” 사역을 내세우며 어린이 사역 예산을 삭감하려 했을 때였습니다. 어머니는 “너의 형을 임신했던 여름에 내가 쉬었던 것이 전부야.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 대략 헤아려 보니 어머니는 55년 동안을 교회에서 아이들과 함께 일하셨습니다.

마가복음 10장에는 흔히 “어린아이들과 예수님”이라는 제목으로 친근한 복음서 이야기 중 하나가 기록되어 있습니다. 사람들은 아이들을 축복해달라고 예수님께 데려왔지만, 제자들은 그것을 막으려고 했습니다. 마가는 그때 예수님이 “노하시어......어린 아이들이 내게 오는 것을 용납하고 금하지 말라 하나님의 나라가 이런 자의 것이니라”(14절)라고 자신의 제자들을 꾸짖으셨다고 기록하고 있습니다.

찰스 디킨스는 이렇게 썼습니다. “나는 이 작은 아이들을 사랑합니다. 하나님으로부터 갓 나온 그들이 우리를 사랑한다는 것은 작은 일이 아닙니다.” 어른인 우리가 어린아이들이 늘 새로운 예수님의 사랑으로부터 절대 차단되지 않도록 최선을 다하는 것도 마찬가지로 작은 일이 아닙니다.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD

My mother has been committed to many things over the course of her life, but one that has remained constant is her desire to see little children introduced to Jesus. Of the few times I’ve witnessed my mother display disagreement publicly, all were when someone attempted to cut a children’s
ministry budget in favor of what they felt were more “serious” expenditures. “I took off one summer when I was pregnant with your brother, but that’s it,” she told me. I did a little family math and I realized my mom had been working with children in the church for fifty-five years.

Mark 10 records one of the endearing stories in the Gospels commonly titled “The Little Children and Jesus.” People were bringing children to Jesus that He might touch and bless them. But the disciples tried to prevent this from happening. Mark records Jesus as “indignant”—and rebuking His very own disciples: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (V. 14).

Charles Dickens wrote, “I love these little people; and it’s not a slight thing when they, who are so fresh from God, love us.” And it’s not a slight thing when we, who are older, do all we can to make sure the little children are never hindered from the ever-fresh love of Jesus. - JOHN BLASE

우리의 이름을 아시는 주님

우리 부부는 오래 다니던 교회를 떠났다가 3년 만에 다시 돌아가게 되었습니다. ‘사람들이 우리를 어떻게 대할까? 다시 받아줄까? 우리를 사랑할까? 떠났던 것을 용서할까?’ 화창한 주일 아침에 우리는 이 질문들에 대한 답을 얻었습니다. 교회의 커다란 문에 들어서자 우리의 이름이 계속해서 들렸던 것입니다. “팻! 댄! 보게 돼서 정말 반가워요!” 그들의 음성은 아동 문학 작가 케이트 디카밀로가 그녀의 유명한 책에 썼던 것과 같았습니다. “독자 여러분, 이 슬픈 세상에서 당신이 사랑하는 누군가가 당신의 이름을 부르는 소리만큼 더 아름다운 소리는 없습니다.”

이스라엘 백성들에게도 이 같은 약속이 있었습니다. 우리 부부는 한동안 다른 교회를 선택한 것이었지만 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님께 등을 돌렸습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그들을 다시 받아주셨습니다. 하나님은 이사야 선지자를 보내어, “너는 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 구속하였고 내가 너를 지명하여 불렀나니 너는 내 것이라”(이사야 43:1)고 안심시키셨습니다.

눈에 띄지 않고, 인정받지 못하고, 심지어 아무도 우리를 모른다고 느껴지는 이 세상이지만 하나님은 우리 각자의 이름을 다 아신다는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 하나님은 “네가 내 눈에 보배롭고 존귀하다”고 말씀하십니다 (4절). “네가 물 가운데로 지날 때에 내가 너와 함께 할 것이라 강을 건널 때에 물이 너를 침몰하지 못할 것이라”(2절). 이 약속은 이스라엘만을 위한 것이 아닙니다. 우리를 위해 자신의 생명을 내어주신 예수님은 우리의 이름을 알고 계십니다. 왜요? 사랑 안에서 우리는 주님의 것이기 때문입니다.

HE KNOWS YOUR NAME

After breaking with our longtime church, my husband and I reunited with the fellowship after three long years. But how would people treat us? Would they welcome us back? Love us? Forgive us for leaving? We got our answer on a sunny Sunday morning. As we walked through the big church doors, we kept hearing our names. “Pat! Dan! It’s so great to see you!” As children’s author Kate DiCamillo wrote in one of her popular books, “Reader, nothing is sweeter in this sad world than the sound of someone you love calling your name.”

The same assurance was true for the people of Israel. We had chosen a different church for a time, but they had turned their backs on God. Yet He welcomed them back. He sent the prophet Isaiah to assure them, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine” (ISAIAH 43:1).

In this world—where we can feel unseen, unappreciated, and even unknown—be assured that God knows each of us by name. “You are precious and honored in my sight,” He promises (V. 4). “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you” (V. 2). This promise isn’t just for Israel. Jesus ransomed His life for us. He knows our names. Why? In love, we are His. - PATRICIA RAYBON

보이지 않는 경이로움

굿리치 여사는 인생의 황혼기에 접어들면서 힘겨웠지만 은혜로 가득 찬 삶의 기억들과 함께 이런저런 생각들이 떠오르곤 했습니다. 그녀는 미시간의 그랜드 트래버스 만이 내려다보이는 창가에 앉아 메모지를 집어 들었습니다. 조금 지나면 자신이 쓴 것조차 모르게 될 글이지만 그녀는 이렇게 썼습니다. “나는 지금 내가 늘 앉는 의자에 앉아 있습니다. 발은 문틀 위에 놓여 있고 마음은 하늘을 날아다닙니다. 저 아래엔 햇살 찬란한 물결이 쉼 없이 치고 있는데 다 어디로 가는 걸까요? 하지만 사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 아버지가 주신 셀 수 없는 선물들과 영원한 사랑에 감사드립니다! 언제나 나를 감격시키는 그 사랑, 어떻게 그럴 수 있나요? 그 사랑 때문에 볼 수도 없는 하나님을 나도 이렇게 사랑합니다.”

베드로 사도도 그런 경이로움을 알았습니다. 그는 자신의 눈으로 예수님을 보았지만 그의 편지를 읽게 될 사람들은 본 적이 없었습니다. “예수를 너희가 보지 못하였으나......믿고 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 기뻐하니” (베드로전서 1:8). 우리가 예수님을 사랑하는 것은 명령을 받았기 때문이 아니라 성령님의 도우심으로(11절) 예수님이 우리를 얼마나 사랑하시는지 알게 되기 때문입니다.

그것은 예수님이 우리 같은 사람들을 돌보신다는 말을 듣는 것 이상의 것입니다. 그것은 주님의 보이지 않는 임재와 성령님의 경이로움이 우리 삶의 모든 단계에서 현실이 되게 하겠다는 그리스도의 약속을 우리 스스로 경험하는 것입니다.

UNSEEN WONDER

In the twilight of her years, Mrs. Goodrich’s thoughts came in and out of focus along with memories of a challenging and grace-filled life. Sitting by a window overlooking the waters of Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay, she reached for her notepad. In words she soon wouldn’t recognize as her own she wrote: “Here I am in my favorite chair, with my feet on the sill, and my heart in the air. The sun-struck waves on the water below, in constant motion—to where I don’t know. But thank You—dear Father above—for Your innumerable gifts and Your undying love! It always amazes me—How can it be? That I’m so in love with One I can’t see.”

The apostle Peter acknowledged such wonder. He had seen Jesus with his own eyes, but those who would read his letter had not. “Though you have not seen him . . . you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 PETER 1:8). We love Jesus not because we’re commanded to, but because with the help of the Spirit (V. 11) we begin to see how much He loves us.

It’s more than hearing that He cares for people like us. It’s experiencing for ourselves the promise of Christ to make the wonder of His unseen presence and Spirit real to us at every stage of life. - MART DEHAAN
