당신은 누구입니까?

화상 회의에서 리더가 “안녕하세요!”하고 인사를 했습니다. 나는 그를 보지도 않고 그냥 “안녕하세요.”라고 대답했습니다. 스크린에 비친 내 모습을 보는데 정신이 빠져 있었던 것입니다. ‘아니 내가 이렇게 생긴 거야?’ 화상 회의에 참석한 다른 사람들의 미소 띤 얼굴을 보니 늘 보던 그 모습이었습니다. 그렇다면 여기 이 모습이 바로 나의 모습임에 틀림없습니다. ‘살을 좀 빼야 겠네. 머리도 깎고.’

바로는 스스로 생각하기에 매우 위대했습니다. 그는 여러 나라 가운데 사자였고 바다 가운데의 큰 악어와 같았습니다(에스겔 32:2). 그러다가 그는 하나님께서 자신을 어떻게 보시는지를 얼핏 보게 되었습니다. 하나님은 그가 곤경에 처해 있으며, 하나님이 그의 시체를 들짐승에게 내어줌으로써 “많은 민족이 놀랄 것이며......네가 당한 일로 왕들이 두려워 떨 것”(10절) 이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 바로는 자신이 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 못 미치는 사람이었습니다.

우리는 스스로 “영적으로 꽤 괜찮다”고 생각할지 모르지만, 하나님의 관점으로 우리 죄를 보면 그렇지 않습니다. 하나님의 거룩한 기준에 비교해보면 “우리의 의는 다 더러운 옷 같습니다”(이사야 64:6). 그러나 하나님은 또한 그 외의 어떤 것, 더 참된 어떤 것을 보십니다. 곧 하나님은 예수님을 보시고, 예수님 ‘안에’ 있는 우리를 보십니다.

‘지금의 당신의 모습’에 낙심이 되십니까? 그러나 그것이 ‘당신의 본 모습’이 아니라는 것을 기억하십시오. 예수님을 믿는 사람은 예수님 안에 있고,
주님의 거룩하심이 당신을 덮고 있습니다. 당신은 스스로 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 아름답습니다.

WHO ARE YOU?

The leader of our video conference said, “Good morning!” I said “Hello” back, but I wasn’t looking at him. I was distracted by my own image on the screen. Do I look like this? I looked at the smiling faces of the others on the call. That looks like them. So yes, this must be me. I should lose some weight. And get a haircut.

In his mind, Pharaoh was pretty great. He was “a lion among the nations . . . a monster in the seas” (EZEKIEL 32:2). But then he caught a glimpse of himself from God’s perspective. God said he was in trouble and that He would expose his carcass to wild animals, causing “many peoples to be appalled at you, and their kings [to] shudder with horror because of you” (V. 10). Pharaoh was much less impressive than he thought.

We may think we’re “spiritually handsome”—until we see our sin as God sees it. Compared to His holy standard, even “our righteous acts are like filthy rags” (ISAIAH 64:6). But God also sees something else, something even more true: He sees Jesus, and He sees us in Jesus.

Feeling discouraged about how you are? Remember this is not who you are. If you have put your trust in Jesus, then you’re in Jesus, and His holiness drapes over you. You’re more beautiful than you imagine. - MIKE WITTMER

최근의 한 설문조사를 보면 자신이 성인이 되었다고 생각하는 나이가 언제인지 묻는 질문이 있습니다. 스스로 성인이라고 생각하는 사람들은 그 사실을 보여주는 구체적 행동들을 예시했는데, 가계 예산을 세우고 집을 사는 것이 “어른으로서의 행동” 순위 1위를 차지했습니다. 다른 어른스러운 행동으로는 주 중에 매일 저녁식사를 직접 준비한다거나, 병원 진료 예약을 직접 하는 것, 재미있는 예로 군것질로 저녁식사를 때워도 된다거나, 토요일 저녁에 놀러 나가지 않고 집에 있는 것이 더 좋아지는 것 등 다양했습니다.

성경은 우리가 영적으로도 힘써 성숙해져야 한다고 말합니다. 바울은 에베소 교회에 편지를 써서 “온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르라”(에베소서 4:13)고 강권했습니다. 우리 믿음이 “어릴” 동안에는 “온갖 교훈의 풍조”(14절)에 취약해 우리 사이에 자주 분열이 생기기도 합니다. 이와 반대로, 진리를 이해하는 데 성숙해지면 “머리가 되시는 그리스도”(15절, 새번역) 아래 한 몸이 되어 움직이게 됩니다.

MOVING TOWARD MATURITY

A recent survey asked respondents to identify the age at which they believed they became adults. Those who considered themselves adults pointed to specific behaviors as evidence of their status. Having a budget and buying a house topped the list as being marks of “adulting.” Other adult activities ranged from cooking dinner every weeknight and scheduling one’s own medical appointments, to the more humorous ability to choose to eat snacks for dinner or being excited to stay at home on a Saturday evening instead of going out.

The Bible says we should press on toward spiritual maturity as well. Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus, urging the people to “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (EPHESIANS 4:13). While we’re “young” in our faith, we’re vulnerable to “every wind of teaching” (V. 14), which often results in division among us. Instead, as we mature in our understanding of the truth, we function as a unified body under “him who is the head, that is, Christ” (V. 15).

God gave us His Spirit to help us grow into a full understanding of who He is (JOHN 14:26), and He equips pastors and teachers to instruct and lead us toward maturity in our faith (EPHESIANS 4:11–12). Just as certain characteristics are evidence of physical maturity, our unity as His body is evidence of our spiritual growth. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

하나님의 구원

한 주민의 911 신고를 받고 경찰관이 기찻길을 따라 조명을 밝히며 운전해 가다 철로 위에 걸쳐 서 있는 자동차 한 대를 발견했습니다. 그때 경찰관의 계기판 카메라에 기차가 이 차를 향해 무서운 속도로 달려오는 아찔한 광경이 보였습니다. “시속 50에서 80마일(약 80에서 130 킬로미터) 정도의 빠른 속도로 기차가 다가오고 있었습니다.”라고 경찰관은 말했습니다. 그는 망설임 없이 뛰어가 기차가 차와 충돌하기 불과 몇 초 전에 의식을 잃은 한 남자를 차에서 끌어냈습니다.

성경은 하나님을 종종 아무런 가망이 안 보이는 바로 그때 구원해 주시는 분으로 기록하고 있습니다. 애굽에 갇혀 숨 막히는 억압 아래에서 이스라엘 민족은 벗어날 가능성이 전혀 없다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 출애굽기에서 우리는 하나님께서 그들에게 희망을 전해주는 말씀을 하시는 것을 봅니다. “내가 애굽에 있는 내 백성의 고통을 분명히 보고 그들이......부르짖음을 듣고 그 근심을 알았다”(3:7). 그리고 하나님은 보실 뿐 아니라 행동하셨습니다. “내가 내려가서 그들을 애굽인의 손에서 건져내리라”(8절). 하나님은 이스라엘 민족을 속박에서 구해내셨습니다. 그것은 하나님이 하신 구원이었습니다.

이스라엘 민족을 구한 하나님의 구원은 도움이 필요한 우리 모두를 도우시려는 그분의 마음과 권능을 보여줍니다. 하나님께서 구하러 오시지 않으면 파멸할 수밖에 없는 우리를 그분이 도와주십니다. 상황이 아무리 어렵고 불가능해 보일지라도, 우리는 눈을 들고 마음을 열어 구원하기를 기뻐하시는 하나님을 바라보아야 합니다.

DIVINE RESCUE

After being informed of a 911 call from a concerned citizen, a police officer drove alongside the train tracks, shining his floodlight into the dark until he spotted the vehicle straddling
the iron rails. The trooper’s dashboard camera captured the harrowing scene as a train barreled toward the car. “That train was coming fast,” the officer said, “Fifty to eighty miles per hour.” Acting without hesitation, he pulled an unconscious man from the car mere seconds before the train slammed into it.

Scripture reveals God as the One who rescues—often precisely when all seems lost. Trapped in Egypt and withering under suffocating oppression, the Israelites imagined no possibility for escape. In Exodus, however, we find God offering them words resounding with hope: “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt,” He said. “I have heard them crying out . . . and I am concerned about their suffering” (3:7). And God not only saw—God acted. “I have come down to rescue them” (V. 8). God led Israel out of bondage. This was a divine rescue.

God’s rescue of Israel reveals God’s heart—and His power—to help all of us who are in need. He assists those of us who are destined for ruin unless God arrives to save us. Though our situation may be dire or impossible, we can lift our eyes and heart and watch for the One who loves to rescue. - WINN COLLIER

A WISE BUILDER

Sojourner Truth, whose birth name was Isabella Baumfree, was born a slave in 1797 in Esopus, New York. Though nearly all her children were sold as slaves, she escaped to freedom in 1826 with one daughter and lived with a family who paid the money for her freedom. Instead of allowing an unjust system to keep her family apart, she took legal action to regain her small son Peter—an amazing feat for an African American woman in that day. Knowing she couldn’t raise her children without God’s help, she became a believer in Christ and later changed her name to Sojourner Truth to show that her life was built on the foundation of God’s truth.

King Solomon, the writer of Proverbs 14, declares, “The wise woman builds her house” (V. 1). In contrast, one without wisdom “tears hers down.” This building metaphor shows the wisdom God provides to those willing to listen. How does one build a house with wisdom? By saying “only what is helpful for building others up” (EPHESIANS 4:29; SEE ALSO 1 THESSALONIANS 5:11). How does one tear down? Proverbs 14 gives the answer: “A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride” (V. 3).

Sojourner had a “secure fortress” (V. 26) in a turbulent time, thanks to the wisdom of God. You may never have to rescue your children from an injustice. But you can build your house on the same foundation Sojourner did—the wisdom of God. - LINDA WASHINGTON

우리의 참 모습

부모님의 오래된 사진 앨범 안에 어린 남자아이의 사진이 있습니다. 그 아이는 둥근 얼굴에 주근깨가 있고 머리카락은 연한 금발에 곧은 편입니다. 그 아이는 만화를 좋아하고 아보카도를 싫어하며, 레코드가 한 장만 있는데 아바의 것입니다. 그 앨범 안에는 십대 아이의 사진들도 있습니다. 그의 얼굴은 둥글지 않고 깁니다. 머리카락은 곧지 않고 곱슬입니다. 주근깨가 없고 아보카도를 좋아하며 만화보다는 영화를 보고 아바의 레코드가 있다는 것을 인정하려 하지 않습니다. 어린 소년과 십대 아이는 같은 점이 거의 없습니다. 과학적으로 이 둘의 피부, 치아, 피, 뼈는 다 다릅니다. 그럼에도 이 둘은 다 나입니다. 이 모순 때문에 철학자들이 계속 골치를 앓아 왔습니다. 우리는 살면서 계속 변하기 때문에, 그러면 누가 진짜 우리인가 하는 질문이 생기는 것입니다.

OUR TRUE SELVES

Inside my parents’ old photo album is a picture of a young boy. He has a round face, freckles, and straight, light-blond hair. He loves cartoons, hates avocados, and owns just one record, by Abba. Also inside that album are pictures of a teenager. His face is long, not round; his hair is wavy, not straight. He has no freckles, likes avocados, watches movies rather than cartoons, and would never admit to owning an Abba record! The boy and the teenager are little alike. According to science they have different skin, teeth, blood, and bones. And yet they are both me. This paradox has baffled philosophers. Since we change throughout our lives, who is the real us?

The Scriptures provide the answer. From the moment God began knitting us together in the womb (PSALM 139:13–14), we’ve been growing into our unique design. While we can’t yet imagine what we’ll finally become, we know that if we’re children of God we’ll ultimately be like Jesus (1 JOHN 3:2)—our body with His nature, our personality but His character, all our gifts glistening, all our sins gone.

Until the day Jesus returns, we’re being drawn towards this future self. By His work, step by step, we can reflect His image ever more clearly (2 CORINTHIANS 3:18). We aren’t yet who we’re meant to be, but as we become like Him, we become our true selves. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

소망 중에 기다림

로헬리오는 일주일 휴가 동안 우리에게 서빙했던 웨이터입니다. 한 번은 대화 중에 예수님이 그에게 복 주셔서 신실한 믿음에 사랑도 많은 케일리를 아내로 주셨다고 했습니다. 첫아이를 낳은 후 하나님은 그에게 다운증후군을 가진 조카를 돌볼 기회를 주셨습니다. 그리고 얼마 지나지 않아 그는 장모님까지 함께 지내며 돌보게 되었습니다.

로헬리오는 아내가 집에 머물면서 하나님께서 그들에게 맡기신 사람들을 돌볼 수 있도록 자주 2교대 근무를 하면서도 늘 기쁘게 일했습니다. 두 부부가 마음을 열고 집을 열어 가족들을 섬기는 모습에 내가 남들을 더 사랑하며 살 수 있게 감동을 받았다고 말하자, 그는 “그들을 돌보고......당신을 돌보는 것이 나의 기쁨입니다.”라고 말했습니다.

로헬리오의 삶은 베푸는 삶의 능력, 그리고 하나님의 공급하심을 믿고 서로를 사심없이 돕는 삶의 능력을 분명히 보여줍니다. 바울 사도는 하나님의 백성들에게 “형제를 사랑하여 서로 우애하고...... 소망 중에 즐거워하며 환난 중에 참으며 기도에 항상 힘쓰며......성도들의 쓸 것을 공급하며 손 대접하기를 힘쓰라”(로마서 12:10-13)고 강력히 권면합니다.

우리의 삶은 한순간에 바뀔 수도 있고, 그 결과 우리나 사랑하는 사람들이 견디기 어려운 처지에 놓일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님을 섬기면서 우리가 받은 모든 것을 기쁨으로 나눌 때, 우리는 하나님의 영원한 사랑을 다른 사람들과 함께 붙들며 살아갈 수 있습니다.

WAITING IN HOPE

Rogelio served as our waiter during our weeklong vacation. In one conversation, he credited Jesus for blessing him with Kaly, a compassionate wife with strong faith. After they had their first baby, God gave them the opportunity to help care for their niece who had Down syndrome. Soon after, Rogelio’s mother-inlaw needed live-in care.

Rogelio works with joy, often taking on double shifts to ensure his wife can stay home to care for the people God entrusted to them. When I shared how the couple inspired me to love better because of the way they opened their hearts and home to serve their family members, he said, “It is my pleasure to serve them . . . and you.”

Rogelio’s life affirms the power of living with generosity and trusting God to provide as we serve one another selflessly. The apostle Paul urged God’s people to be “devoted to one another in love . . . joyful in hope, patient in affliction, [and] faithful in prayer” as we “share with the Lord’s people who are in need [and] practice hospitality” (ROMANS 12:10–13).

Our life can change in an instant, leaving us or those we love in circumstances that feel impossible to bear. But when we’re willing to share all God has given us while we wait on Him, we can cling to His enduring love . . . together. - XOCHITL DIXON

완전한 정의

1983년, 십대 아이 세 명이 14세 소년을 살해한 혐의로 체포되었습니다. 나이가 더 어렸던 그 소년은 “입고 있던 [운동] 재킷 때문에......총에 맞았다”고 뉴스에 보도되었습니다. 무기징역을 선고받은 그들은 감옥에서 36년을 보내고 나서야 새로운 증거가 나타나 무죄로 밝혀졌습니다. 다른 사람이 그 범행을 저질렀던 것입니다. 판사는 그들을 석방하기 전에 사과문을 발표했습니다.

아무리 열심히 노력해도(또 아무리 행정기관에서 바르게 일을 처리 하더라도), 인간의 정의에는 종종 허점이 있습니다. 우리는 모든 정보를 가지고 있지 않으며, 때로는 부정직한 사람들이 사실을 조작하기도 하고, 때로는 우리가 잘못을 저지르도 합니다. 그리고 살다가 악한 일을 당하면 이것을 바로잡는데 여러 해가 걸릴 수도 있습니다. 그러나 다행스럽게도, 변덕스러운 인간과는 달리 하나님은 완전한 정의를 행하십니다. 모세는 “그가 하신 일이 완전하고 그의 모든 길이 정의롭다”(신명기 32:4)고 말합니다. 하나님은 모든 것을 사실대로 보십니다. 우리가 아무리 제대로 하지 못해도 때가 되면 하나님께서 최종적이고 궁극적인 정의를 가져오실 것입니다. 우리는 그때가 언제인지는 모르지만, “공의로우시고 바르시고 진실하고 거짓이 없으신 하나님”(4절)을 섬기기 때문에 그런 확신이 있습니다.

우리는 옳고 그름이 분명하지 않을 때 고생할 수 있으며, 우리나 사랑하는 사람들이 불의를 당할 때 그것이 영영 바로 잡혀지지 않을 것 같아 두려울 수도 있습니다. 그러나 공의의 하나님께서 우리의 생전이든 사후든 그 어느 날에 우리를 위해 정의를 행하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다.

PERFECT JUSTICE

In 1983, three teens were arrested for the murder of a fourteen year- old. According to news reports, the younger teen was “shot . . . because of his [athletic] jacket.” Sentenced to life in prison, the three spent thirty-six years behind bars before evidence surfaced that revealed their innocence. Another man had committed the crime. Before the judge released them as free men, he issued an apology.

No matter how hard we try (and no matter how much good is done by our officials), human justice is often flawed. We never have all the information. Sometimes dishonest people manipulate the facts. Sometimes we’re just wrong. And often, evils may take years to be righted, if they ever are in our lifetime. Thankfully, unlike fickle humans, God wields perfect justice. “His works are perfect,” says Moses, “and all his ways are just” (DEUTERONOMY 32:4). God sees things as they truly are. In time, after we’ve done our worst, God will bring about final, ultimate justice. Though uncertain of the timing, we have confidence because we serve a “faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he” (V. 4).

We may be dogged by uncertainty regarding what’s right or wrong. We may fear that the injustices done to us or those we love will never be made right. But we can trust the God of justice to one day—either in this life or the next—enact justice for us. - WINN COLLIER

슬퍼해도 괜찮아

나는 무릎을 꿇고 눈물을 바닥에 떨구며, “하나님, 왜 저를 보살펴주시지 않습니까?”라고 울부짖었습니다. 나는 2020년 코로나 바이러스 대유행기간 거의 한 달 동안 실업 상태로 있었습니다. 실업급여 신청에도 무언가 문제가 생겨 아직 어떤 금전적 도움도 받지 못했고, 미국 정부가 약속한 경기부양 수표도 도착하지 않았습니다. 나는 마음 속으로는 하나님께서 모든 것을 해결해주실 것을 믿었고, 진정으로 나를 사랑하신다는 것과 보살펴주실 것을 믿었지만, 그 순간에는 버림받았다는 느낌이 들었습니다.

예레미야애가는 우리에게 슬퍼해도 괜찮다고 일깨워 줍니다. 이 책은 기원전 587년 바벨론 사람들이 예루살렘을 멸망시킨 때나, 아니면 그 직후에 쓰인 것으로 보이는데, 거기에는 사람들이 마주했던 고난(3:1, 19)과 압제(1:18) 와 기아(2:20; 4:10)에 관한 내용들이 묘사되어 있습니다. 그러나 책의 중간 부분에서 저자는 왜 그가 희망을 가질 수 있는지를 기억하며 이렇게 말합니니다. “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다 이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다”(3:22-23). 폐허 앞에서도 저자는 변함없이 신실하신 하나님을 기억했습니다.

때로는 “여호와께서는 자기에게 희망을 걸고 자기를 찾는 자에게 은혜를 베푸신다”(25절, 현대인의 성경)는 말씀을 믿기가 불가능해 보이기까지 합니다. 특히 고난의 끝이 보이지 않을 때 더 그렇습니다. 그러나 우리는 하나님이 우리를 들으시고 끝까지 신실하게 우리를 돌보신다는 것을 믿고 그분께 부르짖을 수 있습니다.

IT’S OKAY TO LAMENT

I dropped to my knees and let my tears fall to the floor. “God, why aren’t you taking care of me?” I cried. It was during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. I’d been laid-off for almost a month, and something had gone wrong with my unemployment application. I hadn’t received any money yet, and the stimulus check the US government had promised hadn’t arrived. Deep down, I trusted that God would work out everything. I believed He truly loved me and would take care of me, but in that moment, I felt abandoned.

The book of Lamentations reminds us it’s okay to lament. The book was likely written during or soon after the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem in 587 bc. It describes the affliction (3:1, 19), oppression (1:18), and starvation (2:20; 4:10) the people faced. Yet, in the middle of the book the author remembers why he could hope: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (3:22–23). Despite the devastation, the author remembered that God remains faithful.

Sometimes it feels impossible to believe that “the Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him” (V. 25), especially when we don’t see an end to our suffering. But we can cry out to Him, trust that He hears us, and that He’ll be faithful to see us through. - JULIE SCHWAB

놀라운 삶

호주의 유명한 외과의사 캐서린 햄린의 부고를 읽고 그녀에 대해 알게 되었습니다. 캐서린 부부는 개발도상국에서 분만시 흔히 생기는 상처인, 산과적 누공(산모의 장기에 생기는 구멍)으로 인한 치명적인 육체적 정신적 외상을 전문적으로 치료해주는, 세계에서 하나뿐인 병원을 에티오피아에 설립했습니다. 캐서린은 육만 명 이상의 여성들을 치료한 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

92세의 나이에도 여전히 병원에서 일을 하고 한 잔의 차와 성경공부로 매일 하루를 시작했던 캐서린은 관심을 갖고 물어보는 사람들에게 자신은 하나님께서 주신 일을 단순히 하고 있을 뿐인, 그저 예수님을 믿는 평범한 신자라고 말했습니다.

하나님을 강하게 거부하는 사람들조차 “우리의 선행을 보고 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있도록”(베드로전서 2:12) 살라고 하는 성경의 권면을 나에게 산 교훈으로 보여준 그녀의 놀라운 삶을 알게 되어 감사했습니다.

영적 어둠에서 우리를 불러내어 하나님과 관계를 맺게 하시는 성령님의 능력은(9절) 우리의 일이나 섬김의 영역을 우리 신앙의 간증들로 바꾸어주실 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 열정이나 기술이 무엇이든, 능력 있게 사람들을 하나님께 인도하는 방식으로 그 모든 일을 한다면 우리에게 새로운 의미와 목적이 더해지게 될 것입니다.

A REMARKABLE LIFE

I came to learn about Catherine Hamlin, a remarkable Australian surgeon, through reading her obituary. In Ethiopia, Catherine and her husband established the world’s only hospital dedicated to curing women from the devastating physical and emotional trauma of obstetric fistulas, a common injury in the developing world that can occur during childbirth. Catherine is credited with overseeing the treatment of more than 60,000 women.

Still operating at the hospital when she was ninety-two years old, and still beginning each day with a cup of tea and Bible study, Hamlin told curious questioners that she was an ordinary believer in Jesus who was simply doing the job God had given her to do.

I was grateful to learn about her remarkable life because she powerfully exemplified for me Scripture’s encouragement to believers to live our lives in such a way that even people who actively reject God “may see your good deeds and glorify God” (1 PETER 2:12).

The power of God’s Spirit that called us out of spiritual darkness into a relationship with Him (V. 9) can also transform our work or areas of service into testimonies of our faith. In whatever passion or skill God has gifted us, we can embrace added meaning and purpose in doing all of it in a manner that has the power to point people to Him. - LISA M. SAMRA

공의의 하나님

그 암소는 아마도 역사상 가장 큰 “희생양”일지도 모릅니다. 그 소의 이름이 데이지인지, 매들린인지, 아니면 그웬돌린이었는지는 모르지만 (그런 이름들로 추정됩니다), 오리어리 부인의 소유였던 이 소가 도시 인구의 삼분의 일이 집을 잃었던 1871년 시카고 대화재를 일으킨 것으로 지목되었습니다. 그때 불은 목조 건물들 사이로 강풍을 타고 사흘 동안이나 타오르면서 거의 삼백 명의 목숨을 앗아갔습니다.

GOD OF JUSTICE

She was perhaps the greatest “scapecow” in history. We don’t know if her name was Daisy, Madeline, or Gwendolyn (each name has been suggested), but Mrs. O’Leary’s cow was
blamed for the 1871 Great Chicago Fire that left every third resident of the city homeless. Carried by strong winds through wooden structures, the fire burned for three days and took the lives of nearly three-hundred people.

For years, many believed the fire began when the cow knocked over a lantern left burning in a shed. After further investigation— 126 years later—the city’s Committee on Police and Fire passed a resolution exonerating the cow and her owners and suggesting the activities of a neighbor warranted scrutiny.

Justice often takes time, and Scripture acknowledges how difficult that can be. The refrain, “How long?” is repeated four times in Psalm 13: “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?” (VV. 1–2). But in the middle of his lament, David finds reason for faith and hope: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (V. 5).

Even when justice is delayed, God’s love will never fail us. We can trust and rest in Him not just for the moment but for eternity. - JAMES BANKS
