삶의 풍랑을 헤쳐 나가기

1999년 7월 16일, 존 에프 케네디 주니어가 조종하던 소형 비행기가 대서양에 추락했습니다. 조사관은 사고 원인이 흔히 발생하는 ‘공간 방향상실’이라고 확인해 주었습니다. 이 현상은 가시성이 떨어져 방향 감각을 잃은 조종사가 목적지에 제대로 다다르게 도와줄 장비에 의존해야 하는 것을 잊어버릴 때 생겨납니다.

우리도 인생을 헤쳐 나갈 때 삶이 너무 버거워 방향을 잃은 것 같이 느껴질 때가 종종 있습니다. 암 진단이나 사랑하는 이의 죽음, 실직, 친구의 배신 등, 인생의 예기치 못한 슬픔으로 우리는 쉽게 길을 잃고 혼란에 빠질 수 있습니다.

이런 상황에 처할 때 우리는 시편 43편의 기도를 드릴 수 있습니다. 여기서 시편 기자는 악함과 불의에 둘러싸인 느낌에 압도되어 길을 잃고 있습니다. 그는 절망 속에서 자신이 원하는 하나님이 계시는 목적지까지 안전하게 도달할 수 있도록 하나님의 전적인 인도하심을 간구합니다 (3-4절) . 시편 기자는 하나님의 임재 안에서 소망과 기쁨을 다시 찾게 될 것을 잘 알고 있습니다.

NAVIGATING THE STORMS OF LIFE

On July 16, 1999, the small plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Jr. crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. Investigators determined the cause of the accident to be a common error known as spatial disorientation. This phenomenon occurs when, due to poor visibility, pilots become disoriented and forget to rely on their instruments to help them successfully reach their destination.

As we navigate life, there are often times when life gets so overwhelming we feel disoriented. A cancer diagnosis, the death of a loved one, a job loss, a betrayal by a friend—life’s unexpected tragedies can easily leave us feeling lost and confused.

When we find ourselves in these kinds of situations, we might try offering the prayer of Psalm 43. In this psalm, the psalmist is overwhelmed and feeling lost because he feels surrounded by evil and injustice. In despair, the psalmist pleads with God to provide His sure guidance to help him safely navigate through the situation to his desired destination, God’s presence (VV. 3–4) . In God’s presence the psalmist knows he’ll find renewed hope and joy.

What are the tools the psalmist requests for guidance? The light of truth and the assurance of God’s presence by His Holy Spirit. When you’re feeling disoriented and lost, God’s faithful guidance through His Spirit and loving presence can comfort you and light your way.

확신에 찬 기도

오랫동안 아이를 갖기 위해 노력했던 리처드와 수잔 부부는 수잔이 임신했을 때 아주 기뻐했습니다. 그러나 산모의 건강 문제로 아기가 위험하게 되자 리처드는 매일 밤 아내와 아기를 위해 깨어 기도했습니다. 그러던 어느 날 밤, 리처드는 하나님이 돌보아 주신다고 약속하셨으니 이렇게까지 열심히 기도할 필요가 없다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 일주일 후 수잔은 유산하고 말았습니다. 리처드는 몹시 실망했습니다. ‘기도를 열심히 하지 않아서 아기를 잃은 것은 아닐까?’라는 생각이 들었습니다.

처음 볼 때는 오늘 본문 속 비유도 그렇게 말하는 것 같이 생각됩니다. 이 비유에서 이웃(때로는 하나님을 나타낸다고 여김)은 오로지 친구의 성가신 끈질김 (누가복음 11:5-8) 때문에 친구를 도와주러 잠자리에서 나옵니다. 이런 식으로 읽으면, 이 비유는 마치 하나님은 우리가 계속 귀찮게 졸라야만
우리의 기도를 들어주시는 것으로 해석됩니다. 그리고 열심히 기도하지 않으면 하나님은 아마 우리를 도와주지 않으실 거라는 것입니다.

그러나 클라인 스노드그라스와 같은 성경주석가들은 이것이 틀린 해석이라고 지적합니다. 이 비유의 진정한 초점은 이웃도 이기적인 이유로 우리를 도와주는데 하물며 자비로우신 하나님은 얼마나 더 우리를 도와주시겠는가 하는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님이 결함 있는 인간들보다 더 위대하시다는 것 (11-13절) 을 알고, 확신을 가지고 간구할 수 있습니다 (9-10절) . 하나님은 결코 이 비유에 나오는 이웃이 아닙니다. 아니 그 반대이십니다. 나는 리처드에게 말해주었습니다. “왜 아기를 잃게 되었는지는 모르겠어요. 하지만 당신이 기도를 ‘열심히’ 하지 않아서가 아니에요. 하나님은 그런 분이 아니에요.”

CONFIDENT PRAYER

Having tried for years to have a child, Richard and Susan were elated when Susan became pregnant. Her health problems, however, posed a risk to the baby, and so Richard lay awake each night praying for his wife and child. One night, Richard sensed he didn’t need to pray so hard, that God had promised to take care of things. But a week later Susan miscarried. Richard was devastated. He wondered, Had they lost the baby because he hadn’t prayed hard enough?

On first reading, we might think today’s parable suggests so. In the story, a neighbor (sometimes thought to represent God) only gets out of bed to help the friend because of the friend’s annoying persistence (LUKE 11:5–8) . Read this way, the parable suggests that God will give us what we need only if we badger Him. And if we don’t pray hard enough, maybe God won’t help us.

But biblical commentators like Klyne Snodgrass believe this misunderstands the parable—its real point being that if neighbors might help us for selfish reasons, how much more will our unselfish Father. We can therefore ask confidently (VV. 9–10) , knowing that God is greater than flawed human beings (VV. 11–13) . He isn’t the neighbor in the parable, but the opposite of him.

“I don’t know why you lost your baby,” I told Richard, “but I know it wasn’t because you didn’t pray ‘hard’ enough. God isn’t like that.”

LISTEN AND LEARN

On one side of the street a homeowner displays in his yard a giant blow-up bald eagle draped in a US flag. A big truck sits in the driveway. Its side window features a painted flag and the back bumper is covered with patriotic stickers. Directly across the street in a neighbor’s yard are signs that highlight the slogans for current social justice issues in the news.

Are the people in these homes feuding or friends? we might wonder. Is it possible that both families are believers in Jesus? God calls us to live out the words of James 1:19: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Too often we stubbornly hold on to our opinions and aren’t willing to consider what others are thinking. Matthew Henry’s Commentary has this to say: “We should be swift to hear reason and truth on all sides, and be slow to speak . . . and, when we do speak, there should be nothing of wrath.”

Someone has said, “Learning requires listening.” The practical words from God in the book of James can only be accomplished if we’re filled with God’s loving Spirit and choose to respect others. He’s willing to help us make changes in our hearts and attitudes. Are we open to listen and learn?

하나님을 향한 갈망

커너와 사라 스미스 부부가 5마일(9킬로미터) 떨어진 윗 동네로 이사했을 때, 그들의 고양이 스모어는 낯선 나머지 집을 나갔습니다. 어느 날 사라는 소셜미디어에서 그들이 살던 예전 농가의 현재 사진을 보았는데, 사진 속에 스모어가 있었습니다!

LONGING FOR GOD

When Conner and Sarah Smith moved five miles up the road, their cat S’mores expressed his displeasure by running away. One day Sarah saw a current photo of their old farmhouse on social media. There was S’mores in the picture! Happily, the Smiths went to retrieve him. S’mores ran away again. Guess where he went? This time, the family that had purchased their house agreed to keep S’mores too. The Smiths couldn’t stop the inevitable; S’mores would always return “home.”

Nehemiah served in a prestigious position in the king’s court in Susa, but his heart was elsewhere. He had just heard news of the sad condition of “the city where my ancestors are buried” (NEHEMIAH 2:3) . And so he prayed, “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, . . . ‘if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name’ ” (1:8–9).

Home is where the heart is, they say. In Nehemiah’s case, longing for home was more than being tied to the land. It was communion with God that he most desired. Jerusalem was “the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.”

The dissatisfaction we sense deep down is actually a longing for God. We’re yearning to be home with Him.

회복시키시는 예수님

샘은 아무 잘못도 하지 않았지만 조립 라인 일자리를 잃었습니다. 다른 부서의 부주의로 그들이 만든 자동차에 문제가 생긴 것입니다. 몇 번의 자동차 사고가 뉴스에 보도된 후 조심스러운 고객들은 그 브랜드의 차를 사지 않았습니다. 회사는 규모를 줄여야 했고, 샘은 일자리를 잃었습니다. 그는 부수적으로 피해를 입게 되었는데, 그것은 결코 공평한 일이 아니었습니다.

JESUS RESTORES US

Although Sam had done nothing wrong, he lost his job on the assembly line. Carelessness in another division led to problems in cars they built. After several crashes made the news, wary customers stopped buying their brand. The company had to downsize, leaving Sam out of work. He’s collateral damage, and it isn’t fair. It never is.

History’s first collateral damage occurred immediately after the first sin. Adam and Eve were ashamed of their nakedness, so God graciously clothed them with “garments of skin” (GENESIS 3:21). It’s painful to imagine, but one or more animals that had always been safe in the garden were now slaughtered and skinned.

There was more to come. God told Israel, “Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning you shall provide it” (EZEKIEL 46:13). Every. Single. Day. How many thousands of animals have been sacrificed because of human sin?

Their death was necessary to cover our sin until Jesus, the Lamb of God, came to remove it (JOHN 1:29) . Call this “collateral repair.” As Adam’s sin kills us, so the Last Adam’s (Christ’s) obedience restores all who believe in Him (ROMANS 5:17–19) . Collateral repair isn’t fair—it cost Jesus’ life—but it’s free. Reach out to Jesus in belief and receive the salvation He offers, and His righteous life will count for you.

택시기사는 우리를 런던 히드로 공항에 태워 주면서 자신의 지난 이야기를 해주었습니다. 그는 열다섯 살 때 전쟁과 기아를 피해 홀로 영국으로 왔습니다. 11년이 지난 지금, 자신의 가정을 이루었고, 고향에서는 생각지도 못할 여러 방법들로 가족을 부양하고 있지만, 그는 여전히 고향의 부모 형제들과 떨어져 사는 것을 한탄하고 있습니다. 그는 가족들과 다시 만나는 날이 와야 이 고단한 여정이 끝날 거라고 했습니다.

HOPE IN GRIEF

As the cabbie drove us to London’s Heathrow Airport, he told us his story. He had come alone to the United Kingdom at age fifteen, seeking to escape war and deprivation. Now, eleven years later, he has a family of his own and is able to provide for them in ways unavailable in his native land. But he laments that he’s still separated from his parents and siblings. He told us that he’s had a hard journey that won’t be complete until he’s reunited with his family.

Being separated from our loved ones in this life is hard, but losing a loved one in death is much harder and creates a sense of loss that won’t be made right until we’re reunited with them. When the new believers at Thessalonica wondered about such losses, Paul wrote, “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope” (1 THESSALONIANS 4:13). He explained that as believers in Jesus, we can live in expectation of a wonderful reunion—together forever in the presence of Christ (V. 17).

Few experiences mark us as deeply as the separations we endure, but in Jesus we have hope of being reunited. And in the midst of grief and loss we can find the comfort we need in that enduring promise (V. 18).

붙였습니다. 나는 그 말들이 사실이 아니라는 것을 알면서도 불안과 두려움에서 벗어날 수 없을 것 같았습니다. 그래서 나는 성경을 펼쳤습니다.

잠언 30장 5절을 펼쳐 천천히 심호흡을 한 후 크게 소리 내어 읽었습니다. “하나님의 말씀은 다 순전하며 하나님은 그를 의지하는 자의 방패시니라.” 눈을 감자 평강이 가득 임했고, 나는 청중들에게 나의 간증을 나누기 시작했습니다.

많은 사람들이 자신에 대한 다른 사람들의 부정적인 말과 생각 때문에 꼼짝 못하게 되는 경험을 합니다. 하지만, 하나님의 말씀은 “순전”하고 완벽하며 온전합니다. 하나님의 자녀로서의 우리의 가치나 삶의 목적에 대해 영혼을 파괴하는 그릇된 생각들을 믿고 싶은 충동이 들 때, 하나님의 영원하며 절대 확실한 진리가 우리의 생각과 마음을 보호해 줍니다. 우리는 “여호와여 주의 옛 규례들을 내가 기억하고 스스로 위로하였나이다” (시편 119:52) 라고 고백한 시편 기자의 말을 되뇌일 수 있습니다.

우리 모두 부정적인 말들을 성경말씀으로 바꾸어 가면서, 하나님과 우리와 다른 사람들에 관해 받아들였던 거짓말과 싸우도록 합시다.

LIES WITH TRUTH

I set my Bible on the podium and stared at the eager faces waiting for me to begin the message. I’d prayed and prepared. Why couldn’t I speak?

You’re worthless. No one will ever listen to you, especially if they know your past. And God would never use you. Seared into my heart and mind, these words spoken in various ways over my life ignited a decade-long war against the lies I so easily believed. Though I knew the words weren’t true, I couldn’t seem to escape my insecurities and fears. So I opened my Bible.

Turning to Proverbs 30:5, I inhaled and exhaled slowly before reading out loud. “Every word of God is flawless,” I read, “he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” I closed my eyes as peace overwhelmed me, and I began to share my testimony with the crowd. Many of us have experienced the paralyzing power of negative words or opinions others have of us. However, God’s words are “flawless,” perfect and absolutely sound. When we’re tempted to believe spirit-crushing ideas about our value or our purpose as God’s children, God’s enduring and infallible truth protects our minds and our hearts. We can echo the psalmist who wrote: “I remember, Lord, your ancient laws, and I find comfort in them” (PSALM 119:52).

Let’s combat lies we’ve accepted about God, ourselves, and others by replacing negative-speak with Scripture.

하나님의 은혜 안에서 자라감

영국의 설교가 찰스 스펄전 (1834-1892) 은 그야말로 “전속력으로” 살았습니다. 열 아홉 살에 목사가 된 그는 곧 많은 청중 앞에서 설교를 하기 시작했습니다. 그가 직접 편집한 그의 모든 설교는 마침내 육십 세 권의 책으로 발간되었고, 그 밖에 여러 성경주석과 기도에 관한 책들, 그리고 다른 저술들이 있습니다. 그는 일주일에 보통 여섯 권의 책을 읽었습니다! 스펄전은 한 설교에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “아무 일도 하지 않는 죄는 모든 죄 중에서 가장 큰 죄라고 할 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그것이 다른 대부분의 죄를 수반하기 때문입니다...... 이 끔찍한 게으름! 하나님, 우리를 거기서 구해 주소서!”

찰스 스펄전은 하나님의 은혜 안에서 자라고 하나님을 위해 살기 위해 열심히, “더욱 힘써” (베드로후서 1:5) 살았습니다. 우리가 그리스도를 따르는 자들이라면, 하나님은 우리가 “더욱 힘써 [우리] 믿음에 덕을, 덕에 지식을...... 절제를, 인내를......경건을 더하” (5-7절) 도록 더욱 예수님을 닮아 자라갈 수
있는 열정과 능력을 불어넣어 주실 것입니다.

우리는 제각각 동기부여나 능력, 활력 등이 다 달라서, 우리 모두가 찰스 스펄전과 같은 속도로 살 수도 없고 또 그렇게 살아야 하는 것도 아닙니다. 그러나 예수님이 우리를 위해 하신 모든 일을 이해할 때, 우리는 부지런하고 신실한 삶을 살아야 할 최고의 동기부여를 갖게 됩니다. 그리고 하나님을 위하고 섬기며 살도록 하나님이 우리에게 주신 자원들을 통해 힘을 얻습니다. 하나님은 성령님을 통해 크든 작든 그렇게 하려는 우리의 모든 노력에 힘을 더해 주실 것입니다.

GROWING IN GOD’S GRACE

The English preacher Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) lived life “full throttle.” He became a pastor at age nineteen— and soon was preaching to large crowds. He personally edited all of his sermons, which eventually filled sixty-three volumes, and wrote many commentaries, books on prayer, and other works. And he typically read six books a week! In one of his sermons, Spurgeon said, “The sin of doing nothing is about the biggest of all sins, for it involves most of the others. . . . Horrible idleness! God save us from it!”

Charles Spurgeon lived with diligence, which meant he “[made] every effort” (2 PETER 1:5) to grow in God’s grace and to live for Him. If we’re Christ’s followers, God can instill in us that same desire and capacity to grow more like Jesus, to “make every effort to add to [our] faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge . . . self-control, perseverance . . . godliness” (VV. 5–7) .

We each have different motivations, abilities, and energy levels—not all of us can, or should, live at Charles Spurgeon’s pace! But when we understand all Jesus has done for us, we have the greatest motivation for diligent, faithful living. And we find our strength through the resources God has given us to live for and serve Him. God through His Spirit can empower us in our efforts—big and small—to do so.

막힌 기도

14년 동안 화성탐사선 ‘오퍼튜니티호’는 미국항공우주국의 제트추진 연구소 사람들과 아무 문제없이 소통했습니다. 2004년에 착륙한 후, 화성 표면 28마일(45킬로미터)을 횡단하며 수천 장의 이미지를 촬영하고 많은 물질들을 분석했습니다. 그러나 2018년 큰 먼지 폭풍이 태양 전지판을 덮어버리면서 탐사선이 전력을 잃어 ‘오퍼튜니티호’와 과학자들 사이의 통신은 끝이 나버렸습니다.

“먼지” 때문에 우리가 세상 바깥에 계시는 분과 소통하는 것이 막힐 수 있을까요? 하나님과 소통하는 수단인 기도를 생각해 보면 방해되는 분명한 것들이 있습니다.

성경은 죄가 하나님과의 관계를 막을 수 있다고 말합니다. “내가 나의 마음에 죄악을 품었더라면 주께서 듣지 아니하시리라” (시편 66:18) . 예수님도 “서서 기도할 때에 아무에게나 혐의가 있거든 용서하라 그리하여야 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서도 너희 허물을 사하여 주시리라” (마가복음 11:25) 고
가르치십니다. 하나님과의 소통은 의심하거나 인간관계에 문제가 생겼을 때에도 방해를 받을 수 있습니다 (야고보서 1:5-7; 베드로전서 3:7).

‘오퍼튜니티호’와의 통신이 막혀버린 것은 영구적인 것 같습니다. 하지만 우리의 기도는 막혀서는 안 됩니다. 성령님의 역사로 하나님은 사랑으로 우리와 하나님과의 소통을 회복시켜 주십니다. 우리가 죄를 고백하고 하나님께로 돌이킬 때, 우리는 하나님의 은혜로 우주에서 가장 위대한 소통인, 우리와
거룩하신 하나님 사이의 일대일 기도를 체험하게 됩니다.

BLOCKED PRAYERS

For fourteen years, the Mars rover Opportunity faithfully communicated with the people at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. After it landed in 2004, it traversed twenty-eight miles of the Martian surface, took thousands of images, and analyzed many materials. But in 2018, communication between Opportunity and scientists ended when a major dust storm coated its solar panels, causing the rover to lose power.

Is it possible that we can allow “dust” to block our communication with Someone outside of our world? When it comes to prayer—communicating with God—there are certain things that can get in the way.

Scripture says that sin can block our relationship with God. “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened” (PSALM 66:18) . Jesus instructs, “When you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins” (MARK 11:25) . Our communication with God can also be hindered by doubt and relationship problems (JAMES 1:5–7; 1 PETER 3:7).

Opportunity’s blockage of communication seems to be permanent. But our prayers don’t have to be blocked. By the work of the Holy Spirit, God lovingly draws us to restored communication with Him. As we confess our sins and turn to Him, by God’s grace we experience the greatest communication the universe has ever known: one-to-one prayer between us and our holy God.

우리에게 필요한 지혜

엘렌이 우편함을 열자 거기에 친한 친구의 주소가 적힌 부피가 큰 봉투가 있었습니다. 며칠 전 엘렌은 그 친구와 다투었습니다. 호기심을 가지고 포장을 풀어 보니 색색의 구슬이 소박한 황마 줄에 꿰어진 목걸이가 들어있었습니다. 목걸이에 “모스 부호로 말하라”는 회사의 구호가 인쇄된 카드가 붙어 있었는데, 카드 안에는 목걸이에 숨겨진 지혜로운 메시지가 번역되어 쓰여 있었습니다. “하나님의 길을 찾으라.” 엘렌은 그것을 목에 걸며 미소를 지었습니다.

잠언서는 지혜로운 말들을 모아 놓은 책인데, 그 시대에 가장 현명한 사람으로 찬사를 받았던 솔로몬이 많이 집필했습니다 (열왕기상 10:23) . 서른 한개의 장으로 되어 있어 독자에게 지혜에 귀 기울이고 어리석음을 피하라고 권하고 있는 잠언서는 “여호와를 경외하는 것이 지식의 근본”이라는 1장 7절
의 핵심 메시지로 시작하고 있습니다. 언제 무엇을 해야 하는지 아는 지혜는 하나님의 길을 구함으로써 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 데서 옵니다. 잠언서의 서두 부분에 이런 말씀이 있습니다. “내 아들아 네 아비의 훈계를 들으며 네 어미의 법을 떠나지 말라 이는 네 머리의 아름다운 관이요 네 목의 금사슬이니라” (8-9절).

엘렌의 친구는 그녀에게 필요한 지혜의 근원인 하나님의 길을 찾게 해주었습니다. 그 선물은 엘렌으로 하여금 필요한 도움을 어디에서 찾을 것인지에 관심을 집중하게 해주었습니다.

하나님을 공경하고 그분의 길을 추구할 때, 삶에서 직면하는 모든 문제에 필요한 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. 이것은 우리 각자 누구에게나 다 그렇습니다.

THE WISDOM WE NEED

Ellen opened her mailbox and discovered a bulky envelope with her dear friend’s return address. Just a few days prior, she’d shared a relational struggle with that friend. Curious, she unwrapped the package and found a colorful beaded necklace on a simple jute string. Attached was a card with a company’s slogan, “Say It in Morse Code,” and words translating the necklace’s hidden and wise message, “Seek God’s Ways.” Ellen smiled as she fastened it around her neck.

The book of Proverbs is a compilation of wise sayings—many penned by Solomon, who was acclaimed as the wisest man of his era (1 KINGS 10:23) . Its thirty-one chapters call the reader to listen to wisdom and avoid folly, starting with the core message of Proverbs 1:7: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Wisdom—knowing what to do when—comes from honoring God by seeking His ways. In the introductory verses, we read, “Listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. What you learn from them will crown you with grace and be a chain of honor around your neck” (VV. 8–9 NLT).

Ellen’s friend had directed her to the Source of the wisdom she needed: Seek God’s ways. Her gift focused Ellen’s attention on where to discover the help she needed.

When we honor God and seek His ways, we’ll receive the wisdom we need for all the matters we face in life. Each and every one.
