아버지가 없는 것이 아닙니다

존 소어즈는 그의 책 ‘아버지 없는 세대’에서 “이천 오백만 명이나 되는 많은 아이들이 편모 가정에서 자라는 이 세대처럼 아버지의 부재를 경험한 세대는 없었다.”라고 말합니다. 나의 경우를 봐도 만약 길거리에서 아버지를 마주쳤어도 몰라봤을 것입니다. 부모님은 내가 아주 어렸을 때 이혼했고, 아버지의 모든 사진은 불태워져 버렸습니다. 그래서 여러 해 동안 나는 아버지가 없는 느낌 속에 자랐습니다. 그러다가 열세 살 되었을 때 주기도문 (마태복음 6:9-13) 을 듣고 이런 생각이 들었습니다. ‘내게 육신의 아버지는 없을 지는 몰라도 이제 하늘에 계신 하나님 아버지가 계셔.’

마태복음 6장 9절은 우리에게 “하늘에 계신 우리 아버지여 이름이 거룩히 여김을 받으시오며”라고 기도하라고 가르칩니다. 그전의 7절에서는 기도할 때 “중언부언하지” 말라고 하는데 이 두 개의 절이 어떻게 연결되는지 궁금할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 하나님은 다 기억하시기 때문에 반복할 필요가 없다는
사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 하나님은 정말로 다 이해하시기 때문에 설명할 필요가 없으며, 따뜻한 마음을 지니셨기에 그분의 선하심을 의심할 필요가 없습니다. 그리고 하나님은 시작부터 끝까지 다 아시기에 우리는 하나님의 때가 완벽하다는 것도 압니다.

하나님께서 우리 아버지 되시므로 하나님을 감동시키기 위해 “많은 말” (7절) 을 할 필요가 없습니다. 우리는 기도를 통해 우리를 사랑하고 돌보시며, 예수님을 통해 자녀로 삼아 주신 하나님 아버지와 대화하는 것입니다.

NOT FATHERLESS

John Sowers in his book Fatherless Generation writes that “No generation has seen as much voluntary father absence as this one with 25 million kids growing up in single-parent homes.” In my own experience, if I’d bumped into my father on the street, I wouldn’t have known him. My parents were divorced when I was very young, and all the photos of my dad were burned. So for years I felt fatherless. Then at age thirteen, I heard the Lord’s Prayer (MATTHEW 6:9–13) and said to myself, You may not have an earthly father, but now you have God as your heavenly Father.

In Matthew 6:9 we’re taught to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Previously verse 7 says not to “keep on babbling” when praying, and we may wonder how these verses are connected. I realized that because God remembers, we don’t need to repeat. He truly understands, so we don’t need to explain. He has a compassionate heart, so we don’t need to be uncertain of His goodness. And because He knows the end from the beginning, we know His timing is perfect.

Because God is our Father, we don’t need to use “many words” (V. 7) to move Him. Through prayer, we’re talking with a Father who loves and cares for us and made us His children through Jesus.

전도할 때의 그 “무엇”

어느 날 알렌이 찾아와 대중 앞에서 발표할 때 어떻게 하면 떨리지 않는지 조언을 부탁했습니다. 많은 사람들이 그렇듯이, 그도 대중 앞에 서면 심장이 두근거리고, 입이 바짝 마르는 것 같고, 얼굴이 벌겋게 상기된다고 합니다. ‘발표 공포증’은 사람들이 가지고 있는 가장 흔한 사회적 불안 중의 하나인데, 심지어 사람들 앞에서 말하는 것이 죽는 것보다 더 두렵다고 농담하는 사람들까지 있습니다. 알렌이 발표를 잘하지 못할까 봐 걱정하는 두려움을 없애 주려고, 나는 그에게 얼마나 잘 발표하는가 보다는 전하려는 메시지의 내용에 집중하라고 말해 주었습니다.

사람의 전달하는 능력보다 ‘무엇’을 전달할지에 중점을 두는 것은 바울이 사람들을 하나님께로 인도하기 위해 접근했던 방법과 비슷합니다. 바울은 고린도 교회에 쓴 서신에서 그의 설교가 “설득력 있는 지혜의 말로 하지 아니했다” (고린도전서 2:4) 고 했습니다. 대신 그는 그의 유려한 말솜씨보다는 그의 말에 힘을 더하시는 성령님을 의지하면서, 오직 예수 그리스도와 주님이 십자가에 못 박히신 것에만 집중하기로 작정하였습니다 (2절).

하나님을 인격적으로 알고 나면 주변 사람들에게 하나님을 전하고 싶어지는데, 종종 “올바르게” 또는 매끄러운 말로 잘 전하지 못할까 봐 두려워서 그것을 피할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 하나님이 어떤 분이시며 하나님이 어떤 놀라운 일을 행하셨는지를 알려주는 진리, 곧 그 “무엇”에 초점을 맞춘다면, 우리도 바울과 같이 우리 말에 힘을 더하시는 하나님을 믿고 두려움과 주저함 없이 전도할 수 있습니다.

THE “WHAT” IN SHARING OUR FAITH

Alan came to me for advice on how to deal with his fear of public speaking. Like so many others, his heart would begin to race, his mouth would feel sticky and dry, and his face would flush bright red. Glossophobia is among the most common social fears people have—many even joke that they’re more fearful of public speaking than of dying! To help Alan conquer his fear of not “performing” well, I suggested he focus on the substance of his message instead of how well he’d deliver it.

Shifting the focus to what will be shared, instead of one’s ability to share it, is similar to Paul’s approach to pointing others to God. When he wrote to the church at Corinth, he remarked that his message and preaching “were not with wise and persuasive words” (1 CORINTHIANS 2:4) . Instead, he’d determined to focus solely on the truth of Jesus Christ and His crucifixion (V. 2) , trusting the Holy Spirit to empower his words, not his eloquence as a speaker.

When we’ve come to know God personally, we’ll want to share about Him with those around us. Yet we sometimes shy away from it because we’re afraid of not presenting it well—with the “right” or eloquent words. By focusing instead on the “what”—the truth of who God is and His amazing works—we can, like Paul, trust God to empower our words and share without fear or reluctance.

바로의 “원정대” 또한 실패했습니다(하나님의 말씀 그대로). 그리고 앗수르가 유다를 정복했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 또 말씀하셨습니다. “여호와께서 기다리시나니 이는 너희에게 은혜를 베풀려 하심이요.” 심지어 우리가 하찮은 것들을 믿을 때라도 하나님은 우리가 하나님께로 돌이킬 수 있도록 도와주시기 위해 여전히 손을 내밀고 계십니다. “그를 기다리는 자마다 복이 있도다” (18절) .

IN GOD WE TRUST

In the early days of the American Revolutionary War, an expedition was launched against British forces in Quebec. When the expedition passed through Newburyport, Massachusetts, on the way to Canada, they visited the tomb of the renowned evangelist George Whitefield. Whitefield’s coffin was opened and his clerical collar and cuffs were removed. The clothing was cut in pieces and distributed in the mistaken belief that it could somehow give the soldiers success.

The expedition failed. But what the soldiers did demonstrates our human tendency to trust in something less than a relationship with God—money or human strength or even religious traditions—for our ultimate well-being. God cautioned His people against this when invasion from Assyria threatened, and they sought Pharaoh’s help instead of turning from their sins and turning personally to Him: “This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. You said, “No, we will flee on horses.” Therefore you will flee!’ ” (ISAIAH 30:15–16).

Their “expedition” failed as well (just as God said it would) and Assyria overwhelmed Judah. But God also told His people, “The Lord longs to be gracious to you.” Even when we have trusted in lesser things, God still holds out His hand to help us return to Him. “Blessed are all who wait for him!” (V. 18)

청결하게 씻는 방법

싱크대에서 두 어린아이가 손을 씻으며 “생일 축하합니다” 노래를 두 번씩 명랑하게 부르고 있습니다. 아이들 엄마가 “병균을 씻어내려면 그만큼 씻어야 해.”라고 말했기 때문입니다. 이미 아이들은 코비드-19 팬데믹이 시작되기도 전에 충분한 시간 동안 손을 씻어야 하는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 팬데믹을 통해 알게 되었듯이 여러 가지 것들을 깨끗이 유지하는 것은 귀찮은 일일 수도 있습니다. 하지만 죄를 씻어 없애는 것은 집중하여 하나님께로 돌이키는 과정을 따르는 것을 의미합니다.

야고보는 로마제국에 흩어져 있는 신자들에게 그들의 초점을 하나님께로 다시 돌리라고 권고했습니다. 언쟁과 싸움에 휩싸여 자신들의 우월의식이나 소유, 세상의 쾌락, 돈과 명예를 위해 다툼으로써 그들은 하나님과 적이 되어 버렸던 것입니다. 그래서 야고보는 이렇게 경고했습니다. “그런즉 너희는
하나님께 복종할지어다 마귀를 대적하라 그리하면 너희를 피하리라...... 죄인들아 손을 깨끗이 하라 두 마음을 품은 자들아 마음을 성결하게 하라” (야고보서 4:7-8) . 그러면 어떻게 그렇게 할 수 있을까요?

“하나님을 가까이하라 그리하면 너희를 가까이하시리라” (8절) . 이 말씀은 삶에서 더러운 죄를 씻어 없애기 위해 왜 하나님께로 돌아가야 하는지 설명해주는 살균제와 같은 말씀입니다. 그러고 나서 야고보는 청결하게 씻는 방법을 더 자세히 설명하고 있습니다. “슬퍼하며 애통하며 울지어다 너희 웃음을 애통으로, 너희 즐거움을 근심으로 바꿀지어다 주 앞에서 낮추라 그리하면 주께서 너희를 높이시리라” (9-10절).

우리의 죄를 다루는 것은 겸손한 일입니다. 하지만 신실하신 하나님은 우리의 “죄 씻는 행위”를 하나님을 예배하는 것으로 바꾸어 주십니다. 할렐루야.

CLEANING METHOD

At the sink, two little children cheerfully sing the “Happy Birthday” song—two times each—while washing their hands. “It takes that long to wash away the germs,” their mother tells them. So even before the COVID-19 pandemic, they’d learned to take time to clean dirt from their hands.

Keeping things clean can be a tedious process, as we learned in the pandemic. Scrubbing away sin, however, means following focused steps back to God.

James urged believers in Jesus scattered throughout the Roman Empire to turn their focus back to God. Beset by quarrels and fights, their battles for one-upmanship, possessions, worldly pleasures, money, and recognition made them an enemy of God. He warned them, “Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. . . . Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (JAMES 4:7–8) . But how?

“Come near to God and he will come near to you” (V. 8) . These are sanitizing words describing the necessity of turning to God to scour away the soil of sin from our lives. James then further explained the cleaning method: “Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (VV. 9–10).

Dealing with our sin is humbling. But, hallelujah, God is faithful to turn our “washing” into worship.

하나님을 영화롭게 하는 선택

레오 톨스토이의 소설 ‘가정의 행복’에서 주인공 세르게이와 마샤는 마샤가 젊고 매력적일 때 만납니다. 세르게이는 나이가 더 많고 여행을 많이 다녀, 마샤가 사는 시골 밖의 세상을 잘 알고 있는 사업가입니다. 시간이 흘러 두 사람은 사랑에 빠지고 결혼하게 됩니다.

그들은 시골에 정착하여 살지만, 마샤는 주변 환경을 지루하게 느끼기 시작합니다. 마샤를 아끼는 세르게이는 세인트 피터스버그로의 여행을 마련하는데, 그곳에서 마샤는 그녀의 아름다움과 매력으로 인해 곧 유명해집니다. 부부가 여행을 마치고 집으로 돌아오려고 할 때, 한 왕자가 마샤를 만나고 싶어 그 도시에 찾아옵니다. 세르게이는 억지로 마샤를 끌고 그곳을 떠날 수 있었지만, 마샤가 스스로 결정하도록 합니다. 그러자 마샤는 그 도시에 남기로 결정하고, 아내의 배신은 세르게이의 마음을 아프게 합니다.

세르게이처럼 하나님은 우리가 주님께 신실하도록 결코 강요하지 않으십니다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑하시기 때문에 우리가 하나님을 바라보거나 등을 돌리거나, 스스로 선택하도록 하십니다. 우리가 처음 하나님을 선택하는 것은 우리 죄를 대속하신 그분의 아들, 예수 그리스도를 영접할 때입니다 (요한
1서 4:9-10) . 그 후, 우리는 평생을 결정하면서 살아갑니다. 성령님이 인도하시는 대로 하나님을 향한 믿음을 선택하겠습니까, 아니면 세상 유혹을 따라가겠습니까? 다윗의 삶은 완전하지 않았습니다. 그러나 그는 “여호와의 도”를 지키는 것과 그렇게 함으로써 얻게 된 좋은 결과에 대해 자주 기록했습니다 (시편 18:21-24) . 우리의 선택이 하나님을 영화롭게 할 때 우리는 다윗이 기술한, 신실한 사람에게는 하나님이 그분의 신실하심으로 대해 주시는 복을 경험하게 됩니다.

CHOOSING TO HONOR GOD

In the novella Family Happiness by Leo Tolstoy, main characters Sergey and Masha meet when Masha is young and impressionable. Sergey is an older, well-traveled businessman who understands the world beyond the rural setting where Masha lives. Over time, the two fall in love and marry.

They settle in the countryside, but Masha becomes bored with her surroundings. Sergey, who adores her, arranges a trip to St. Petersburg. There, Masha’s beauty and charm bring her instant popularity. Just as the couple is about to return home, a prince arrives in town, wanting to meet her. Sergey knows he can force Masha to leave with him, but he lets her make the decision. She chooses to stay, and her betrayal breaks his heart.

Like Sergey, God will never force us to be faithful to Him. Because He loves us, he lets us choose for or against Him. Our first choice for Him happens when we receive His Son, Jesus Christ, as the sacrifice for our sin (1 JOHN 4:9–10) . After that, we have a lifetime of decisions to make. Will we choose faithfulness to God as His Spirit guides us or let the world entice us? David’s life wasn’t perfect, but he often wrote about keeping “the ways of the Lord” and the good outcomes that came from doing so (PSALM 18:21–24) . When our choices honor God,
we can experience the blessing David described: to the faithful, God shows Himself faithful.

서두르지 않는 기도

앨리스 카홀루수나는 하와이 사람들이 사원에 들어가기 전에 얼마나 오랜 시간을 사원 바깥에 앉아 준비하는지 들려줍니다. 사원에 들어간 후에도 그들은 제단까지 천천히 다가가 기도를 드리고, 그런 후 그들의 기도에 “생명을 불어넣기” 위해 다시 밖에 나와 오랫동안 앉아 있곤 합니다. 선교사들이 섬에 왔을 때 하와이 사람들은 가끔 선교사들이 하는 기도가 이상하다고 생각했습니다. 선교사들은 일어서서 몇 마디 문장을 말하고는 그것을 “기도”라고 부르고 ‘아멘’ 하면서 기도를 끝마쳤습니다. 하와이 사람들은 이런 기도를 “생명이 없는” 것으로 보았습니다.

앨리스가 한 말은 하나님의 백성들이 “가만히 있어......알게 되는” (시편 46:10) 기회를 놓칠 수 있다는 것입니다. 오해하지 마십시오. 하나님은 빨리 하는 기도든 천천히 하는 기도든 다 들으십니다. 하지만 종종 삶의 속도는 마음의 속도를 보여주는 것이기에, 하나님이 우리 삶뿐만 아니라 주변 사람들의

NOT RUSHING PRAYER

Alice Kaholusuna recounts a story of how the Hawaiian people would sit outside their temples for a lengthy amount of time preparing themselves before entering in. Even after entering, they would creep to the altar to offer their prayers. Afterward, they would sit outside again for a long time to “breathe life” into their prayers. When missionaries came to the island, the Hawaiians sometimes considered their prayers odd. The missionaries would stand up, utter a few sentences, call them “prayer,” say amen, and be done with it. The Hawaiians described these prayers as “without breath.”

Alice’s story speaks of how God’s people may not always take the opportunity to “be still, and know” (PSALM 46:10) . Make no mistake—God hears our prayers, whether they’re quick or slow. But often the pace of our lives mimics the pace of our hearts, and we need to allow ample time for God to speak into not only our lives but the lives of those around us. How many life-giving moments have we missed by rushing, saying amen, and being done with it?

We’re often impatient with everything from slow people to the slow lane in traffic. Yet, I believe God in His kindness says, “Be still. Breathe in and out. Go slow, and remember that I am God, your refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” To do so is to know that God is God. To do so is to trust. To do so is to live.

은밀히 베푸는 자

상이용사인 크리스토퍼에게는 일상의 활동들이 점점 더 버거워지고, 시간도 더 오래 걸리고, 통증도 늘어가기만 했습니다. 그럼에도 그는 최선을 다해 아내와 아이를 돌보았습니다. 지나가는 사람들은 매주 그가 손으로 미는 제초기로 잔디를 깎는 모습을 보곤 했습니다.

어느 날 크리스토퍼는 익명의 기부자에게서 한 장의 편지와 함께 타고 다니는 비싼 잔디 깎는 기계를 받았습니다. 익명의 기부자는 어려움에 처한 사람을 남모르게 돕는 특권을 통해 보람을 느꼈습니다.

예수님은 우리가 주는 모든 것을 은밀히 해야 한다고 말씀하시지는 않지만, 우리가 베풀 때 우리의 동기를 살펴보라고 상기시켜 주십니다(마태복음 6:1). 그리고 “구제할 때에 외식하는 자가 사람에게서 영광을 받으려고 회당과 거리에서 하는 것 같이 너희 앞에 나팔을 불지 말라”(2절)고도 하셨습니다. 하나님은 우리가 너그러운 기부자가 되기를 바라시면서도, 사람에게서 칭찬이나 특별한 인정을 받으려고 선행을 베푸는 것을 피하라고 권고하십니다(3절).

우리에게 있는 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 오는 것임을 깨달을 때, 우리는 자신의 등을 쓰다듬거나 타인의 칭찬을 얻으려 하지 않는 은밀히 베푸는 자가 될 수 있습니다. 모든 좋은 것을 다 주시는 전지하신 하나님은 그분의 백성들이 참된 선행을 베푸는 모습을 보시며 기뻐하십니다. 하나님의 인정을 받는 보상을 능가하는 것은 아무것도 없습니다.

SECRET GIVER

For Christopher, a physically disabled veteran, everyday activities had become more challenging, took longer to finish, and increased his pain. Still, he did his best to serve his wife and child. Passersby would see him using a push-mower to cut his lawn every week.

One day, Christopher received a letter—and an expensive riding lawnmower—from an anonymous donor. The secret giver’s satisfaction came through the privilege of helping someone in need.

Jesus doesn’t say that all our giving should be in secret, but He does remind us to check our motives when we give (MATTHEW 6:1). He also said: “When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others” (V. 2). While God expects us to be openhanded givers, He encourages us to avoid doing good deeds in front of people for the purpose of receiving accolades or special recognition (V. 3).

When we realize everything we have comes from God, we can be secret givers who don’t need to pat our own backs or gain the admiration of others. Our all-knowing Giver of all good things delights in the genuine generosity of His people. Nothing beats the reward of His approval. - XOCHITL DIXON

아프리카 콩고에서 의료선교사로 활동하던 영국인 헬렌 로즈비어는 1964년 심바 반란 중에 반군에 의해 포로로 잡혔습니다. 그녀를 억류한 사람들에 의해 구타와 학대로 그녀는 끔찍한 고통을 겪었습니다. 그 일 후 며칠 동안, 그녀는 스스로에게 이렇게 묻고 있었습니다. “이 일이 그럴 만한 가치가 있는 일일까?”

혹독한 시련을 겪는 동안 그녀 안에서 일하셨던 하나님의 은혜로, 헬렌 로즈비어는 자신을 위해 죽임까지 당하셨던 구세주는 어떤 일이 닥쳐도 따를 만한 분이라고 결론을 내렸습니다. “그분은 그럴 만한 가치가 있다”라는 그녀의 말은 요한계시록에서 예수님의 보좌를 둘러싼 사람들의 외침을 연상시켜 줍니다. “죽임을 당하신 어린 양은 능력과 부와 지혜와 힘과 존귀와 영광과 찬송을 받으시기에 합당하도다”(5:12).

우리 구세주는 자신을 온전히 드려 고통받으시고 피 흘리시고 죽임을 당하심으로, 우리가 영생과 소망을 값없이 받을 수 있도록 하셨습니다. 그분의 모든 것은 우리의 모든 것을 받을 자격이 있습니다. 주님은 그럴 만한 가치가 있으신 분입니다!

WORTH IT, OR WORTHY?

Helen Roseveare, an English missionary physician in the African Congo, was taken prisoner by rebels during the Simba Rebellion in 1964. Beaten and abused by her captors, she suffered terribly. In the days that followed, she found herself asking, “Is it worth it?”

As she began to ponder the cost of following Jesus, she sensed God speaking to her about it. Years later she explained to an interviewer, “When the awful moments came during the rebellion and the price seemed too high to pay, the Lord seemed to say to me, ‘Change the question. It’s not, ‘Is it worth it?’ It’s ‘Am I worthy?’ ” She concluded that in spite of the pain she had endured, “Always the answer is ‘Yes, He is worthy.’ ”

Through God’s grace at work within her during her harrowing ordeal, Helen Roseveare decided that the Savior who had suffered even death for her was worthy to be followed no matter what she faced. Her words “He is worthy” echo the cries of those surrounding Jesus’ throne in the book of Revelation: “In a loud voice they were saying: ‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!’ ” (5:12).

Our Savior suffered and bled and died for us, giving Himself entirely, so that we may freely receive eternal life and hope. His all deserves our all. He is worthy! - JAMES BANKS

죽음의 영역

2019년 한 산악인이 에베레스트산 정상에서 일출을 보았는데, 그것이 그의 마지막 일출이 되어버렸습니다. 그는 위험한 오르막길에서는 살아남았지만, 높은 고도가 그의 심장을 압박하여 내려오는 길에 그만 죽고 말았습니다. 어느 의학 전문가는 산악인들이 정상을 여정의 끝이라고 여기지 말아야 한다고 경고합니다. 그들은 “자신이 죽음의 영역에 있음”을 기억하고, 재빨리 채비해서 산을 내려와야 합니다.

다윗은 정상에 이르는 위험한 오르막에서 살아남았습니다. 그는 사자와 곰을 죽이고, 골리앗을 무찌르고, 사울의 창과 그를 쫓는 군대도 피하고, 블레셋과 암몬 사람들을 정복해 그 산의 왕이 되었습니다.

DEATH ZONE

In 2019, a climber saw his last sunrise from the peak of Mount Everest. He survived the dangerous ascent, but the high altitude squeezed his heart, and he passed away on the trek down. One medical expert warns climbers not to think of the summit as their journey’s end. They must get up and down quickly, remembering “they’re in the Death Zone.”

David survived his dangerous climb to the top. He killed lions and bears, slew Goliath, dodged Saul’s spear and pursuing army, and conquered Philistines and Ammonites to become king of the mountain.

But David forgot he was in the death zone. At the peak of his success, as “the Lord gave David victory wherever he went” (2 SAMUEL 8:6), he committed adultery and murder. His initial mistake? He lingered on the mountaintop. When his army set out for new challenges, he “remained in Jerusalem” (11:1). David once had volunteered to fight Goliath; now he relaxed in the accolades of his triumphs.

It’s hard to stay grounded when everyone, including God, says you’re special (7:11–16). But we must. If we’ve achieved some success, we may appropriately celebrate the accomplishment and accept congratulations, but we must keep moving. We’re in the death zone. Come down the mountain. Humbly serve others in the valley—asking God to guard your heart and your steps. - MIKE WITTMER

무지개 후광

아드리안은 산을 올라가다가 낮은 구름이 자신의 발밑에 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 태양을 등지고 아래를 내려다본 아드리안은 자신의 그림자뿐만 아니라 ‘브로켄 현상’으로 알려진 눈부신 광경을 보게 되었습니다. 이 현상은 사람의 그림자를 둘러싸고 있는 무지개 후광과 닮았는데, 햇빛이 아래의 구름에서 반사될 때 발생합니다. 아드리안은 그것을 무한한 기쁨을 가져다준 “마법의” 순간으로 묘사하였습니다.

아직도 지구상에서는 비극적인 상실을 초래하는 홍수와 다른 무서운 날씨들이 있습니다. 그러나 무지개는 하나님이 다시는 온 세상을 뒤덮는 홍수로 지구를 심판하지 않으시겠다고 하는 약속입니다. 하나님의 신실하심을 보여주는 이 약속은 우리 각자가 이 세상에서 질병이나 자연재해, 그릇된 행동이나 노화로 인해 개인적인 상실이나 육체적인 죽음을 겪게 되더라도, 우리가 어려움을 지나는 동안 하나님이 사랑으로 함께 하심으로 우리를 일으켜 주신다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다. 물을 통해 색깔을 반사하는 햇빛을 보면, 하나님의 형상을 품은 자들로 이 세상을 채우고 사람들에게 그분의 영광을 드러내겠다는 하나님의 신실하심이 생각납니다.

RAINBOW HALO

On a hike in the mountains, Adrian found himself above some low-lying clouds. With the sun behind him, Adrian looked down and saw not only his shadow but also a brilliant display known as a Brocken spectre. This phenomenon resembles a rainbow halo, encircling the shadow of the person. It occurs when the sunlight reflects back off the clouds below. Adrian described it as a “magical” moment, one that delighted him immensely.

We can imagine how similarly stunning seeing the first rainbow must have been for Noah. More than just a delight to his eyes, the refracted light and resulting colors came with a promise from God. After a devastating flood, God assured Noah, and all the “living creatures” who’ve lived since, that “never again [would] the waters become a flood to destroy all life” (GENESIS 9:15).

Our earth still experiences floods and other frightening weather that results in tragic loss, but the rainbow is a promise that God will never judge the earth again with a worldwide flood. This promise of His faithfulness can remind us that though we individually will experience personal losses and physical death on this earth— whether by disease, natural disaster, wrongdoing, or advancing age—God bolsters us with His love and presence throughout the difficulties we face. Sunlight reflecting colors through water is a reminder of His faithfulness to fill the earth with those who bear His image and reflect His glory to others. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
