하나님이 보살펴 주는 피난처

가족들과 장거리 자동차 여행 중 인구가 많지 않은 몬태나와 사우스 다코타 주에서 몇 시간을 운전하고 있었습니다. 운전을 하면서 드넓은 들판에 한가지 패턴을 발견하게 됩니다. 광대한 농경지에 점점이 있는 농가를 둘러싸고 있는 나무 숲들의 모습이 여기저기 보였습니다. 강한 바람 때문에 밴을 차선에 유지하려고 열심히 노력하던 중, 그 나무들은 미관보다 더 큰 목적이 있다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 그 나무들은 벌판을 뒤흔드는 강력한 돌풍 으로부터 농가와 주민들을 보호하기 위해 의도적으로 심어진 방풍림이었습니다.

이사야 선지자는 하나님의 보호하심 속에서의 미래를 바람과 폭풍 으로부터의 피난처로 묘사했습니다. 이사야는 하나님의 백성을 불러 회개시키며 (이사야 31:6-7) “한 왕이 공의로 통치할 것”(32:1)이고 그와 함께 통치하는 모든 사람이 “광풍을 피하는 곳, 폭우를 가리는 곳”(2절)이 될 미래의 평화에 대해서 썼습니다. 그 결과로 사람들이 평화롭고 안전하게 진리를 보고, 듣고, 깨닫고, 말할 수 있는 축복을 누리게 됩니다(3-4절).

SHELTERS OF GOD’S CARE

On a long family road trip, I spent hours driving through the sparsely populated states of Montana and South Dakota. As I drove, I began to notice a pattern: vast stretches of farmland were dotted with groves of trees surrounding a house. As I worked hard to keep our van in our lane due to strong winds, it dawned on me that the trees were there for more than beauty. They were also intentionally cultivated windbreakers designed to protect the home and its occupants from the powerful gusts of wind buffeting the landscape.

The prophet Isaiah once described a future in God’s care as a shelter from wind and storm. Having called God’s people to repentance (ISAIAH 31:6-7), Isaiah also wrote of a future time when “a king will reign in righteousness” (32:1) and all who rule with Him will be “a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm” (V. 2). The resulting blessing is people who are able to see, hear, understand, and speak truth (VV. 3-4) in peace and safety.

While we still await the full benefits of this promise, we already see God at work through those who actively look out for the interests of others (PHILIPPIANS 2:3-4). Christ’s Spirit helps us cultivate a safe space where people can flourish even in difficult times. This is a tangible way we can exemplify God’s loving care.

하나님은 세상 곳곳에서 우리 각자의 삶 속에서, 우리 모두가 앓고 있는 죄로부터 우리들을 구해 내시려고 일하고 계십니다. 우리도 다윗과 같이, 그분이 하신 모든 일에 대해 찬양하는 마음을 가져야 할 것입니다.

SINGING GOD’S PRAISES

When Diana’s vision began to deteriorate, she grew concerned. She’d also been having trouble thinking and kept repeating herself. Her symptoms caused doctors to believe it wasn’t a problem with her eyes but something in her brain. They learned she had a large tumor in her brain that needed to be removed. Diana was concerned that the surgery would impair her ability to sing—something she’s passionate about and shares with her family. So her surgeon did something incredible and kept her awake for the pain-free surgery, asking her to sing during the procedure so he’d know he’d preserved that part of her neurological circuitry. The two even recorded a duet during the operation.

Like Diana, King David—who penned many of the Bible’s psalms—was passionate about singing. He often sang to God in both lament and joy. When he was delivered from his enemies, he acknowledged that it was God who set him “free from [his] enemies” (2 SAMUEL 22:49). Because of God’s good works, David declared, “I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name” (V. 50).

God continues to be at work in the world and in each of our lives, delivering us from the malady that plagues us all: sin. May we, like David, set our hearts on singing God’s praises for all He’s done.

메리엄-웹스터 사전의 2023년도 올해의 단어는 ‘진정한’ 이었습니다. 그 의미는 “가짜나 모방이 아닌,” 그리고 “진실한 인성, 영혼, 혹은 성격” 입니다. 사람들은 진리를 구합니다, 하지만 사실을 허구로부터 구별해내기가 쉽지 않습니다. 편집자인 피터 소코로우스키가 이렇게 말합니다. “이 논문을 한 학생이 썼는지, 또는 어떤 정치인이 그 말을 한 것인지 믿을 수가 있는가? 우리는 더 이상 우리가 직접 본 것이라도 사실인지 믿을 수가 없다. 어떤 경우에는 우리 자신이 보고 들은 것조차 믿지 않는다. 오늘날 우리는 진정성 그 자체가 하나의 연기라고 인식하고 있을 뿐이다.”

BY GOD’S TRUTH

Merriam-Webster’s 2023 Word of the Year was authentic. It means “not false or imitation” and “true to one’s own personality, spirit, or character.” People search for truth, but discerning fact from fiction can be challenging. Editor Peter Sokolowski said, “Can we trust whether a student wrote this paper [or] . . . whether a politician made this statement? We don’t always trust what we see anymore. We sometimes don’t believe our own eyes or our own ears. We are now recognizing that authenticity is a performance itself.”

As what is real becomes less clear, authenticity is something most people crave. This kind of “crisis of authenticity” can be averted as we take in and live out the wisdom of Scripture. Jesus spoke to His disciples just before His arrest, trial, and death (JOHN 13-17). Preparing His disciples for His departure from earth, He also “looked toward heaven and prayed” for them (17:1). He prayed that the Father might “sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (V. 17). This implies that what God has revealed in the Bible doesn’t conform to some other standard of what’s true, but it is truth itself and the standard by which everything else is judged.

God calls us to align our lives with Scripture, to conduct ourselves according to its truth. Only by doing so can we become truly authentic, which is very much what the world needs today.

하나님의 계획은? 바로 하나님의 사람들

내가 한 신학교의 이사회에 들어간 후, 오랫동안 신학교를 이끌어 오시던 분이 은퇴를 선언하셨습니다. 나는 새 총장을 찾는 일에 참여하게 되었지요. 우리는 먼저 총장이 지녀야 할 여러가지 자격 요건들을 생각해 보았습니다. 어떻게 그렇게 중요하고 복잡한 일에 적합한 사람을 찾을 수 있을까요?

나는 이 일에 대해 성막의 등잔대를 순금을 부어, 꽃모양의 잔과 살구 꽃과 여섯 개의 가지로 만들라는 하나님의 상세한 요구조건(출애굽기 25:31-36) 을 읽을 때와 같은 느낌을 받았습니다. 그리고, 성막 뜰은 “세마포 휘장을 치고, 그 기둥이 스물이며 그 받침 스물은 놋으로 하고 그 기둥의 갈고리와 가름대는 은으로”(27:9-10) 하라고 하셨습니다. 그 누가 이런 일들을 해낼 수 있단 말입니까?

하나님께서 대답하셨습니다. “내가 브살렐을 지명하여 부르고 하나님의 영을 그에게 충만하게 하여 지혜와 총명과 지식과 여러 가지 재주로... 만들게 하리라”(31:2-5). 하나님은 또한 말씀하시길, “내가 지혜를 주어 그들이 내가 네게 명령한 것을 다 만들게 할”(6절)것이라고 하셨습니다.

우리는 고위지도자 직책의 공석을 채울 사람이나 교회 봉사자나 행사 담당자를 찾기 위하여 어디로 눈을 돌려야 할까요? 당신의 백성을 부르시고 준비시키시는 하나님을 찾아야 합니다. 하나님께서는 당신의 야심찬 성전의 설계를 내놓으셨습니다. 그리고 이 일을 실행하도록 당신의 백성을 선택하시고 준비시키셨습니다. 하나님의 계획에 대한 대답은 바로 주님의 백성들입니다.

GOD’S PLANS? GOD’S PEOPLE!

After I joined the board of trustees of a seminary, the long-term leader announced his retirement. I found myself among those tasked with searching for a new president. Together, we amassed a daunting list of qualifications. How would we find someone to fulfill such a complicated and vital role?

I wondered the same as I read God’s specifications for the tabernacle’s lampstand to be crafted of pure gold, with flower-like cups and almond flowers and six branches (EXODUS 25:31-36). And the courtyard was “to have curtains of finely twisted linen, with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases and with silver hooks and bands on the posts” (27:9-10). Who could fulfill such assignments?

God answers, “I have chosen Bezalel . . . and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills . . . to engage in all kinds of crafts” (31:2-5). God also said, “I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you” (V. 6).

Where do we turn to fill a vacant role for a high-level leader, a volunteer at church or to orchestrate an event? To the God who calls and equips His people. God laid out an ambitious design for His temple. Then He chose and equipped His people to implement it. God’s answer to His plans is God’s people.

예수님을 가장 사랑하기

교인들은 왜 교회가 첨탑을 사는지 목사님께 따져 물었습니다. 그것이 하나님의 재원을 가장 잘 사용하는 일이었을까요? 그 돈으로 가난한 사람들을 도와주는 것은 어떠했을까요? 목사님은 그 돈이 기부 받은 것이고, 기부한 사람들의 뜻에 따라 사용돼야 했다고 대답하셨습니다. 목사님은 덧붙여 “가난한 자들은 항상 너희와 함께 있거니와”(요한복음 12:8)라고 하신 예수님의 말씀을 인용하셨습니다.

목사님은 곧바로 그 예수님 말씀 인용이 문맥에서 벗어난 경솔한 발언 이었다고 사과했고, 그래서 나는 ‘예수님 말씀의 문맥’을 다시 생각해 보게 되었습니다. 주께서 돌아가시기 엿새 전에, 한 여인이 비싼 향수로 예수님의 발을 닦았습니다. 제자들은 혐오감을 느꼈습니다. 왜 이 향수를 팔아 가난한 자들을 도와주면 좋지 않았나? 예수님은 신명기 15장 11절을 인용하여 말씀 하셨습니다. “가난한 자들은 항상 너희와 함께 있거니와 나는 항상 있지 아니하리라 하시니라”(요한복음 12:8).

LOVING JESUS MOST

The members asked why their church was buying a steeple. Was this the best use of God’s resources? What about feeding the poor? The pastor replied that the funds came from donors and needed to be spent as they wished. “Besides,” he quoted Jesus, “you will always have the poor among you” (JOHN 12:8).

The pastor quickly apologized for his flippant, out-of-context remark, which led me to wonder, What was Jesus’ context? Six days before His death, a woman anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume. The disciples were disgusted. Why wasn’t this perfume sold to help the poor? Jesus replied by quoting Deuteronomy 15:11, “You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me” (JOHN 12:8).

Jesus often cited Deuteronomy, so He knew what was written a few sentences earlier: “There need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you . . . , he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the Lord your God” (DEUTERONOMY 15:4-5). Perhaps this was another reason for Jesus’ rebuke. Poor people existed only because Israel hadn’t obeyed God’s instructions. Now the poor were being used to distract from Jesus—the true Israelite who would fully obey to the end.

We need not choose between Jesus and the poor. We love people best by loving Him most, and loving Him most inspires us to love others best.

우리의 습관과 성령님의 지혜

“이 근처에서 자랐어요?” 치과 위생사의 질문에 양치 도구가 아직 제 입 안에 있었기 때문에 대답하기가 힘들었습니다. 그의 설명에 의하면 1945년부터 바로 우리가 사는 시에서 세계 최초로 수돗물에 불소를 첨가하기 시작했답니다. 충치를 예방하기 위하여 수돗물 1리터 당 아주 소량인 0.7 밀리그램의 불소를 첨가한 것입니다. 전문가들은 그 효과를 확실 하게 확인했습니다. 하지만 나는 이런 사실을 전혀 모르고 평생 그 물을 마셔온 것이지요!

우리가 매일 접하는 것은 장기적으로 우리에게 영향을 줍니다. 먹고 마시는 것뿐만 아니라 오락, 친구, 소셜 미디어 등도 마찬가지입니다. 바울 사도는 “너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받으라” (로마서 12:2)고 경고했습니다. 성령님께서 예수님을 따르는 이들을 예수님처럼 만드시는 과정은 한 인간의 일생이 걸립니다. 우리의 습관들은 하나님이 하시는 일에 도움이 될 수도 있지만 방해가 될 수도 있습니다. 우리가 무엇을 습관적으로 접하는지 파악하기는 쉽지 않지만 우리는 “지혜와 지식”이 풍성하신 하나님께(11:33) 도와달라고 구할 수 있습니다. 지혜와 분별은 우리 자신을 “지혜롭게”(12:3) 분별하여 우리로 “하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지”(12:2)를 알게 해 주십니다.

주님께서 우리 일상 생활에 더하거나 빼기를 바라시는 것이 있다면 무엇이든지 그만한 가치가 있습니다. 모든 것들은 “주로부터 나오고 주로 말미암고 주에게로 돌아감”(11:36)이기 때문입니다. 주님께서 우리를 가장 잘 알고 계십니다.

HABITS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

“Did you grow up around here?” It was difficult to answer my dental hygienist’s question because her teethcleaning tools were still inside my mouth. She explained that in 1945, our city became the first in the world to add fluoride to public drinking water. Thought to prevent cavities, the treatment doesn’t require much: just 0.7 milligrams of fluoride to a liter of water. Its positive effects are obvious to a trained professional. But, I had no idea, I’d been drinking it all my life!

The things we consume every day can affect us over time. That applies not only to food and drink but also to entertainment, friends, and social media messages. The apostle Paul cautioned, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (ROMANS 12:2). While the Holy Spirit is making disciples of Jesus to be more like Him, the process takes a lifetime. Our habits can help or hinder His work. It’s not always easy to recognize what we’re consuming, but we can ask the one who’s rich in “wisdom and knowledge” to show us (11:33). Wisdom and discernment help us “test and approve what God’s will is” (12:2), while considering ourselves with “sober judgment” (V. 3).

Whatever He might be asking us to add to or remove from our daily lives is worth the price. All things are “from him and through him and for him” (11:36). He knows best.

예수님의 기도

‘예수님, 당신은 날 위해 어떻게 기도하세요?’ 이것은 내 친구 루가 혼자의 힘으로는 도저히 감당할 수 없어서 지혜와 힘을 구해야 했을 때 예수님께 울부짖었던 기도의 경험을 들으며 내가 처음 생각하게 된 질문입니다. 그 친구의 경험을 통해 생각하게 되었던 이 중요한 질문은 내가 기도를 이해하고 실천하는데 한 차원 높은 방법을 알게 해주었습니다.

누가복음 22장에서는 예수님이 시몬 베드로를 위해 어떻게 기도하셨는지 분명하게 보여주고 있습니다. “시몬아, 시몬아, 보라 사탄이 너희를 밀 까부르듯 하려고 요구하였으나 그러나 내가 너를 위하여 네 믿음이 떨어지지 않기를 기도 하였노니 너는 돌이킨 후에 네 형제를 굳게 하라”(31-32절). 베드로는 시험 당했을 때 믿음이 흔들렸습니다. 하지만 예수님의 은혜 때문에 실패하지 않았습니다.

열정적이지만 연약했던 제자, 베드로를 위해 하셨던 예수님의 기도가 어떻게 응답되었는지 사도행전에 잘 나와있습니다. 하나님은 그런 베드로를 사용하셔서 유대인과 이방인에게 복음을 전하게 하셨습니다. 이 같은 예수님의 기도사역은 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. 바울 사도의 말입니다. “죽으실 뿐 아니라 다시 살아나신 이는 그리스도 예수시니 그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라”(로마서 8:34). 시험이나 유혹의 한가운데 있을 때, 제자들을 위해 기도해주신 예수님이 그분을 믿는 모든 사람들을 위해서도 기도해 주신다는 사실을 기억합시다(요한복음 17:13-20 참조).

THE PRAYERS OF JESUS

Jesus, how are You praying for me? I’d never thought to ask that question until my friend Lou shared the experience of his heart-cry to Christ when he was faced with a situation that required more wisdom and strength than he was able to muster. Hearing him voice that noteworthy question in prayer has helped me add a fresh dimension to my understanding and practice of prayer.

In Luke 22, there was no mystery as to how Jesus was praying for Simon Peter: “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail” (VV. 31-32). When Peter was battered through trial, his faith flickered. But because of Christ’s grace, it didn’t fail.

The book of Acts tells us how Jesus’ prayers for Peter—His eager but weak disciple—were answered. God used him to preach the good news about Christ to Jews and gentiles alike. And Jesus’ prayer ministry hasn’t ended. Paul reminds us that “Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (ROMANS 8:34). When you find yourself in the throes of trial or temptation, remember that Jesus, who prayed for His disciples, remains in prayer for those who have believed their message about Him (SEE JOHN 17:13-20).

의미를 찾아서 땅을 파다

우리는 윈스턴이라는 새 강아지를 키우게 되었습니다. 그는 물어뜯고, 잠을 자고, 먹습니다. (그 밖에 다른 한두 가지 일도 합니다.) 아, 그리고 땅을 ‘팝니다.’ 윈스턴은 아무렇게나 파지 않습니다. 그는 땅굴을 파고 있습니다. 마치 감옥에서 탈출하려는 것처럼요. 강박적이고, 사나우며, 더럽습니다.

‘이 개는 왜 그렇게 땅을 많이 파는 걸까요?’ 저는 최근에 궁금해졌습니다. 그리고 깨달았습니다; 저 역시 행복하게 만들것이라고 생각되는 것들을 끝없이 파고드는 경향이 있는 사람이었던 것입니다. 그렇게 하는 것이 항상 나쁜 일만은 아닙니다. 하지만 하나님과 멀어져서 무언가 다른 일에 만족을 찾는 데 집착하면, 나는 땅을 파헤치는 사람이 됩니다. 하나님이 아닌 다른 일에서 의미를 찾고자 땅을 파헤치는 것은 저 자신을 흙투성이로 만들며 더 많은 무엇을 갈망하게 만듭니다.

예레미야는 이스라엘이 그렇게 땅을 파헤치는 사람들인 것을 질책 했습니다. “그들이 생수의 근원되는 나를 버린 것과 스스로 웅덩이를 판 것인데 그것은 그 물을 가두지 못할 터진 웅덩이들이니라”(예레미야 2:13). 하나님께서는 그분의 백성이 ‘그분’을 찾는 일을 소홀히 하지 못하도록 매를 드셨습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 가장 깊은 갈증을 해소하려고 스스로 우물을 파기도 했지요. 하지만 하나님께서는 그 분만이 “생수의 근원”임을 깨우쳐 주셨습니다(13절). 요한복음 4장에서 예수님은 우물가에서 다른 곳에서 갈증을 찾아 헤매던 여자에게 이 생수를 주셨습니다(10-26절).

우리 모두는 때때로 땅을 파헤치는 사람이 됩니다. 하지만 하나님은 은혜롭게도 우리의 헛된 땅파기 대신 그분의 생수가 담긴 생명력으로 채워 주시겠다고 약속하십니다. 그분의 생수만이 우리 영혼의 깊은 목마름을 만족시킬 수 있습니다.

DIGGING FOR MEANING

We have a new puppy, Winston. He bites. Sleeps. Eats. (Does one or two other things.) Oh, and he digs. Winston doesn’t dig casually. He tunnels. Like he’s escaping from prison. It’s compulsive, ferocious, and filthy.

Why does that dog dig so much? I wondered recently. Then it hit me: I’m a digger too—prone to “digging” into myriad things I hope will make me happy. They’re not always even bad things. But when I fixate on finding satisfaction in something apart from God, I become a digger. Digging for meaning apart from God leaves me covered in dirt and longing for something more.

Jeremiah rebuked Israel for being diggers: “They have forsaken me,” God said through the prophet, “and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (JEREMIAH 2:13). God disciplined His people for neglecting to seek Him. They’d dug their own wells in an attempt to quench their deepest thirst. But God reminded them that He alone is the “spring of living water” (V. 13). In John 4, Jesus offered this living water to the woman at the well, who’d also done her share of digging elsewhere (VV. 10-26).

We’re all diggers sometimes. But God graciously offers to replace our fruitless digging with vital fulfillment with His water, which alone satisfies the deep thirst of our souls.

RUNNING THE RACE WITH CHRIST

Tom, age seven, admired his dad’s shiny trophies from school track events sitting on a shelf. He thought, I want one of those for my bedroom. So he asked, “Dad, can I have one of your trophies?” The man surprisingly answered, “No, Tom, those are mine. I earned them, and you can earn your own.” Then they made a plan that if he ran around the block in a certain amount of time (he knew his son could do it), he would give him a trophy of his own. Tom practiced with his dad’s guidance, and a week later his dad cheered him on as he ran the race in time. Tom learned lessons in self-discipline and hard work, and his dad congratulated him with an award.

Proverbs 1:8 encourages children to “listen . . . to your father’s instruction.” Tom’s dad also taught him about running the race of life with Jesus and listening to His leading. He instructed him about choosing “what is right and just and fair,” as the father in Proverbs did (V. 3). A father’s teachings are valuable: “a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck” (V. 9).

You may not have an earthly father to instruct you in your race with Christ. But God can lead you to a mentor who can pass along their wisdom. Or perhaps God is calling you to mentor someone. He’ll give you guidance as you’re active with others in running the race.

몇 년 동안 혼자서 케일럽에게 제자교육을 해 왔던 마크는 교회 지도자가 그 젊은이에게 배정한 다른 멘토가 있었다는 것을 알고 당황했습니다. 그 지도자는 “이제야 케일럽에게 멘토가 생겼군요”라고 말하기까지 했습니다.

‘그들은 그동안 내가 뭘 해왔다고 생각한 거지?’ 마크는 의아해 했고, 제자교육으로 어떤 보상이나 인정을 바라진 않았지만 상처받지 않을 수 없었습니다.

그러나 몇 년 후, 케일럽은 자신이 영적 지도가 가장 필요했을 때 마크가 그의 삶에 들어왔다고 마크에게 말했습니다. 이 격려의 말을 듣자 마크는 한 가지 깨달음을 얻었지요. 하나님께서는 예수님을 믿는 이들에게 각기 다른 은사를 주셔서 서로 비교하지 않고도 그분을 섬기게 하시며, 그분은 그 타이밍을 주관하신다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

SERVING GOD EACH SEASON

After years of discipling Caleb by himself, Mark was dismayed to find out that a church leader had assigned another mentor to the young man. The leader remarked, “Finally, Caleb has a mentor.”

What did they think I was doing all these years? Mark wondered. Though he hadn’t expected any reward or recognition, he couldn’t help feeling hurt.

Years later, however, Caleb told Mark that he’d entered Caleb’s life just when he most needed spiritual guidance. On hearing these encouraging words, Mark came to this realization: God gives believers in Jesus specific gifts to serve Him differently—without comparing with others—and He oversees the timing.

In 1 Corinthians 12:4-31, Paul stresses the value of members of the body of Christ, the church, having different gifts, roles, and assignments. And in chapter 3, he reminds us of the one who’s the ultimate source of the results: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow” (V. 6).

Each of us may be given a unique season and opportunity to do God’s work. Unlike people, God doesn’t compare our work, for He loves us as individuals. May we keep our eyes and hearts focused on doing our best in the season that God has given us— relying completely on His strength and empowerment—and not worry about what others achieve in their own way and time.
