사랑으로 추적하심

영국 시인 프란시스 톰슨의 유명한 시 “천국의 사냥개”는 이렇게 시작됩니다. “나는 그분에게서 도망쳤다. 무수한 밤과 낮이 지나도록.” 톰슨은 그가 하나님으로부터 숨고, 심지어 도망가려고 노력해도 예수님이 끊임없이 추적하신다고 묘사합니다. 시인은 “그분이 찾는 사람은 바로 나”라고 하며 시를 끝맺습니다.

하나님의 추적하는 사랑은 요나서의 중심 주제입니다. 요나 선지자는 이스라엘의 악명 높은 적인 니느웨 사람들에게 하나님께로 돌이키라고 전하라는 사명을 받았지만, “요나는 여호와로부터 도망쳤습니다”(요나 1:3). 그는 니느웨 반대 방향으로 가는 배에 올랐으나 배는 곧 사나운 폭풍을 만났습니다. 선원들을 구하기 위해 요나는 바다속으로 던져졌고, 곧 큰 물고기가 그를 삼켰습니다(1:15-17).

요나는 그의 아름다운 시에서 그가 최선을 다해 하나님으로부터 도망하고자 했으나, 하나님이 그를 추적하셨다고 회상했습니다. 요나는 꼼짝 못하는 상황에서 구원받기 위해 하나님께 기도로 부르짖고 그분의 사랑에 매달렸습니다(2:2, 8). 하나님은 응답하셨고, 요나뿐 아니라 그의 적인 앗수르 사람들까지 구원해주셨습니다(3:10).

두 시에서 묘사된 것처럼, 우리 삶 속에서도 하나님으로부터 도망치려고 시도할 때가 있을지도 모릅니다. 그럴 때에도 예수님은 우리를 사랑하시며, 주님과의 관계를 다시 회복시키시기 위해 우리를 인도해 주십니다(요한1서 1:9).

PURSUED BY LOVE

“I fled Him, down the nights and down the days,” opens the famous poem “The Hound of Heaven” by English poet Francis Thompson. Thompson describes Jesus’ unceasing pursuit—despite his efforts to hide, or even run away, from God. The poet concludes, “I am he whom Thou seekest!”

The pursuing love of God is a central theme of the book of Jonah. The prophet received an assignment to tell the people of Nineveh (notorious enemies of Israel) about their need to turn to God, but instead “Jonah ran away from the Lord” (JONAH 1:3). He secured passage on a ship sailing in the opposite direction of Nineveh, but the vessel was soon overcome by a violent storm. To save the ship’s crew, Jonah was thrown overboard before being swallowed by a large fish (1:15–17).

In his own beautiful poem, Jonah recounted that despite his best efforts to run away from God, God pursued him. When Jonah was overcome by his situation and needed to be saved, he cried out to God in prayer and turned toward His love (2:2, 8). God answered and provided rescue not only for Jonah, but for his Assyrian enemies as well (3:10).

As described in both poems, there may be seasons of our lives when we try to run from God. Even then Jesus loves us and is at work guiding us back into restored relationship with Him (1 JOHN 1:9). - LISA M. SAMRA

죄책감과 용서

인류학자 도널드 브라운은 그의 저서 ‘인간의 보편성’에서 인류 전반에 걸쳐 공통적이라고 생각하는 400가지 이상의 행동들을 열거하고 있습니다. 거기에는 장난감, 농담, 춤, 속담, 뱀에 대한 경계심, 끈으로 물건을 묶기 같은 것들이 포함되어 있습니다. 그는 또한 모든 문화에는 관대함이 칭송받고, 약속이 중시되며, 비열함과 살인 같은 것들이 잘못이라고 인식하는, 그런 옳고 그름의 개념이 있다고 믿습니다. 우리가 어디에서 왔던, 우리 모두에게는 양심이 있습니다.

바울 사도도 여러 세기 전에 이와 비슷한 지적을 했습니다. 하나님이 유대민족에게는 옳고 그름을 명확하게 하기 위해 십계명을 주셨지만, 이방인들이 양심을 지킴으로써 옳은 일을 할 수 있는 것은 하나님의 율법이 그들의 마음에 분명히 새겨져 있기 때문이라고 말했습니다(로마서 2:14-15). 그렇다고 그것이 사람들이 항상 옳은 일을 ‘했다’는 것을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다. 이방인들은 양심에 반하는 일을 하고(1:32) 유대인들은 율법을 어기는(2:17-24) 등, 모두 죄를 범했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 예수님을 믿는 믿음을 통해 우리의 모든 죄로부터 말미암은 죽음의 형벌을 없애 주십니다(3:23-26; 6:23).

하나님은 옳고 그름을 알 수 있도록 모든 인간을 창조하셨기 때문에, 우리 각자는 우리가 한 나쁜 일이나 우리가 하지 못한 좋은 일에 대해 어느 정도 죄책감을 느끼게 됩니다. 우리가 그 죄를 고백할 때, 하나님은 깨끗하게 닦은 화이트보드처럼 죄책감을 없애주십니다. 우리가 누구이며 어디에서 왔던, 우리가 해야 할 일은 하나님께 간구하는 것뿐입니다.

GUILT AND FORGIVENESS

In his book Human Universals, anthropologist Donald Brown lists more than four hundred behaviors that he considers common across humanity. He includes such things as toys, jokes, dances, and proverbs, wariness of snakes, and tying things with string! Likewise, he believes all cultures have concepts of right and wrong, where generosity is praised, promises are valued, and things like meanness and murder understood to be wrong. We all have a sense of conscience, wherever we’re from.

The apostle Paul made a similar point many centuries ago. While God gave the Jewish people the Ten Commandments to clarify right from wrong, Paul noted that since gentiles could do right by obeying their conscience, God’s laws were evidently written on their hearts (ROMANS 2:14–15). But that didn’t mean people always did what was right. The gentiles rebelled against their conscience (1:32), the Jews broke the Law (2:17–24), leaving both guilty. But through faith in Jesus, God removes the death penalty from all our rule-breaking (3:23–26; 6:23).

Since God created all humans with a sense of right and wrong, each of us will likely feel some guilt over a bad thing we’ve done or a good thing we failed to do. When we confess those sins, God wipes away the guilt like a whiteboard wiped clean. All we have to do is ask Him—whoever we are, wherever we’re from. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

빛나는 별

나는 눈을 감고 시간을 돌려 내가 자라난 집으로 돌아가 봅니다. 그러면 아버지와 함께 별을 바라본 기억이 납니다. 우리는 번갈아 가며 눈을 가늘게 뜨고 아버지의 망원경을 통해 반짝이고 깜빡이는 빛나는 점들에 초점을 맞추곤 했습니다. 열과 불에 의해 만들어진 이 빛나는 작은 점들은 매끄럽고 칠흑 같은 하늘과 뚜렷한 대조를 이루며 두드러지게 드러났습니다.

하지만, 아직 희망이 있습니다. 신자들 안에 살아 계신 성령님은 우리가 절제하고 자비롭고 충성할 수 있도록 능력을 주십니다(갈라디아서 5:22-23). 우리가 타고난 능력 이상으로 살라고 부름을 받은 그대로, 하나님의 초자연적인 도움이 이것을 가능케 해줍니다(빌립보서 2:13). 모든 성도들이 성령님의 능력으로 “빛나는 별”이 된다면, 하나님의 빛이 우리 주변의 어두움을 어떻게 물리칠지 상상해 보십시오!

SHINING STARS

I can close my eyes and go back in time to the house where I grew up. I remember stargazing with my father. We took turns squinting through his telescope, trying to focus on glowing dots that shimmered and winked. These pinpricks of light, born of heat and fire, stood out in sharp contrast to the smooth, ink-black sky.

Do you consider yourself to be a shining star? I’m not talking about reaching the heights of human achievement, but standing out against a dark background of brokenness and evil. The apostle Paul told the Philippian believers that God would shine in and through them as they held “firmly to the word of life” and avoided grumbling and arguing (PHILIPPIANS 2:14–16).

Our unity with other believers and our faithfulness to God can set us apart from the world. The problem is that these things don’t come naturally. We constantly strive to overcome temptation so we can maintain a close relationship with God. We wrestle against selfishness to have harmony with our spiritual brothers and sisters.

But still, there’s hope. Alive in each believer, God’s Spirit empowers us to be self-controlled, kind, and faithful (GALATIANS 5:22–23). Just as we are called to live beyond our natural capacity, God’s supernatural help makes this possible (PHILIPPIANS 2:13). If every believer became a “shining star” through the power of the Spirit, just imagine how the light of God would repel the darkness around us! - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

영접

우리 늙은 개가 옆에 앉아서 멍하니 허공을 응시하고 있습니다. 무슨 생각을 하는지 모릅니다. 그러나 한 가지, 개는 “이해하지” 못하기 때문에 죽음에 대해 생각하는 것은 아니라는 것을 압니다. 그들은 미래의 일에 대해 생각하지 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 합니다. 우리는 나이나 건강, 부에 상관없이 어느 순간 죽음에 대해 생각합니다. 시편 49편 20절에 따르면 그것은 우리가 짐승들과 달리 “깨달을” 수 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 죽을 것이며, 그것에 대해 우리가 할 수 있는 것이 아무것도 없다는 것을 압니다. “아무도 자기의 형제를 구원하지 못하며 그를 위한 속전을 하나님께 바치지도 못합니다”(7절). 스스로를 사망에서 구할 만큼 충분한 돈을 갖고 있는 사람은 아무도 없습니다.

TAKEN IN

My old dog sits by my side and stares off into space. A penny for her thoughts. One thing I know she isn’t thinking about is dying because dogs don’t “understand.” They don’t think about future things. But we do. No matter our age or health or wealth, we at some point think about dying. That’s because we, unlike beasts, have “understanding,” according to Psalm 49:20. We know that we will die, and there’s nothing we can do about it. “No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them” (V. 7). No one has enough money to buy himself or herself out of the grave.

But there is a way out of the finality of death: “God will redeem me from the realm of the dead,” insists the psalmist. “He will surely take me to himself” (V. 15; literally, “He will take me in”). Robert Frost said, “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” God has redeemed us from death through His Son, “who gave himself as a ransom for all people” (1 TIMOTHY 2:6). Thus Jesus promised that when our time comes, He will greet us and take us in (JOHN 14:3).

When my time comes, Jesus, who gave to God the price of my life, will welcome me into His Father’s house with open arms. - DAVID H. ROPER

풍성한 물

호주에서 극도의 가뭄과 더위, 화재로 얼룩진 “암울한 이야기”를 요약한 보고서를 발표했습니다. 그 보고서에는 극소량의 강우로 바짝 마른 들판이 불쏘시개가 되어버렸던 처참했던 해에 대한 설명이 담겨 있었습니다. 걷잡을 수 없는 불길이 전원 지대를 불태웠고, 물고기들이 죽었으며, 농사는 망했습니다. 이 모든 것은 우리가 흔히 당연히 여기는 단순한 한 가지 자원인, 살기 위해 우리 모두에게 필요한 물이 없었기 때문이었습니다.

이스라엘은 무서운 딜레마에 처하게 되었습니다. 그들이 먼지투성이의 척박한 사막에 장막을 칠 때 이런 두려운 글로 묘사되어 있습니다. “백성이 마실 물이 없는지라”(출애굽기 17:1). 사람들은 무서웠습니다. 그들의 목구멍은 건조했고, 모래는 지글거렸으며, 자녀들은 갈증으로 고통받았습니다. 사람들은 겁을 먹고는 물을 요구하며 “모세와 다투었습니다”(2절). 그러나 모세가 무엇을 할 수 있었을까요? 그는 하나님 앞에 나아가는 수밖에 없었습니다.

그때 하나님은 모세에게 이상한 명령을 하셨습니다. “지팡이를 손에 잡고......반석을 치라 그것에서 물이 나오리니 백성이 마시리라”(5-6절). 그래서 모세가 반석을 치니 사람들과 그들의 소들까지 먹일 만큼 물이 강같이 흘러나왔습니다. 그날, 이스라엘은 그들의 하나님이 그들을 사랑하시는 것을 알았습니다. 그들의 하나님이 풍성한 물을 공급해주셨습니다.

혹시 당신이 삶의 가뭄이나 황무지를 경험하고 있다면, 하나님이 그것을 알고 계시며 당신과 함께 하신다는 것을 아십시오. 당신이 무엇이 필요하고 무엇이 부족하든, 하나님의 풍성한 물 안에서 희망을 찾고 회복하실 수 있기를 바랍니다.

ABUNDANT WATERS

In Australia, a report outlined “a grim story” of extreme drought, heat, and fire. The account described a horrific year with only minuscule rainfall, turning parched brush into tinder. Raging fires torched the countryside. Fish died. Crops failed. All because they didn’t have a simple resource we often take for granted— water, which we all need in order to live.

Israel found itself in its own terrifying dilemma. As the people camped in the dusty, barren desert, we read this alarming line: “There was no water for the people to drink” (EXODUS 17:1). The people were afraid. Their throats were dry. The sand sizzled. Their children suffered thirst. Terrified, the people “quarreled with Moses,” demanding water (V. 2). But what could Moses do? He could only go to God.

And God gave Moses odd instructions: “Take . . . the staff [and] . . . strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink” (VV. 5–6). So Moses hit the rock, and out gushed a river, plenty for the people and their cattle. That day, Israel knew that their God loved them. Their God provided abundant water.

If you’re experiencing a drought or wilderness in life, know that God is aware of it and He’s with you. Whatever your need, whatever your lack, may you find hope and refreshment in His abundant waters. - WINN COLLIER

새로워진 시각

왼쪽 눈에 통증을 수반한 가벼운 수술을 받은 후 의사가 시력검사를 해보자고 했습니다. 나는 자신 있게 오른쪽 눈을 가리고 차트의 각 줄들을 쉽게 읽었습니다. 이어 왼쪽 눈을 가렸을 때, 나는 탄식하고 말았습니다. 내가 이렇게까지 시력을 잃었다는 것을 그동안 어떻게 몰랐을까요?

새 안경을 맞추어 새로워진 시력에 적응해가면서, 나는 매일 겪는 어려운 일들 때문에 얼마나 자주 영적으로 근시가 되어버렸는지 돌아보았습니다. 나의 고통이나 끊임없이 변하는 상황 등, 아주 가까이에서 볼 수 있는 것에만 집중하게 되면서 영원하고 변함없는 하나님의 신실하심에는 점점 눈이 멀어 갔습니다. 그런 제한된 시력으로, 희망은 이룰 수 없는 듯이 흐릿해 보였습니다.

사무엘상 1장은 현재의 고뇌와 불확실성과 상실에만 마음이 쏠려, 신뢰할 수 있는 하나님을 인식하지 못했던 한 여인의 이야기를 들려줍니다. 한나는 오래도록 자식이 없었고, 남편 엘가나의 또 다른 아내인 브닌나로부터 지속적인 괴롭힘을 당하고 있었습니다. 남편은 그녀를 사랑해주었지만 그녀는 만족스럽지 않았습니다. 어느 날 그녀는 기도하며 자신의 비통함을 솔직하게 털어놓았습니다. 이유를 묻는 엘리 제사장에게 그녀는 자신의 상황을 설명해주었고, 그는 그녀가 떠날 때 하나님께 그녀의 간구를 들어달라고 기도했습니다(사무엘상 1:17). 비록 한나의 상황이 당장 바뀌지는 않았지만, 그녀는 확신에 찬 희망을 품고 떠나갔습니다(18절).

사무엘상 2:1-2의 한나의 기도를 보면 그녀의 초점이 바뀌어 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 그녀의 상황이 나아지기 전인데도 새로워진 시각은 그녀의 관점과 태도를 바꾸어주었습니다. 그녀는 반석이시요 영원한 소망이 되시는 하나님의 한결같은 임재 안에서 기뻐했습니다.

RENEWED VISION

After a painful minor surgery on my left eye, my doctor recommended a vision test. With confidence, I covered my right eye and read each line on the chart with ease. Covering my left eye, I gasped. How could I not realize I’d been so blind?

While adjusting to new glasses and renewed vision, I thought of how daily trials often caused me to be spiritually nearsighted. Focusing only on what I could see up-close—my pain and everchanging circumstances—I became blind to the faithfulness of my eternal and unchanging God. With such a limited perspective, hope became an unattainable blur.

First Samuel 1 tells the story of another woman who failed to recognize God’s trustworthiness while focusing on her current anguish, uncertainty, and loss. For years, Hannah had endured childlessness and endless torment from Peninnah, the other wife of her husband Elkanah. Hannah’s husband adored her, but contentment evaded her. One day, she prayed with bitter honesty. When Eli the priest questioned her, she explained her situation. As she left, he prayed that God would grant her request (1 SAMUEL 1:17). Though Hannah’s situation didn’t change immediately, she walked away with confident hope (V. 18).

Her prayer in 1 Samuel 2:1–2 reveals a shift in Hannah’s focus. Even before her circumstances improved, Hannah’s renewed vision changed her perspective and her attitude. She rejoiced in the ongoing presence of God—her Rock and everlasting hope. - XOCHITL DIXON

미국 남북전쟁 중에 아브라함 링컨 대통령이 한 정치가의 기분을 맞춰주려고 어떤 북부 연합군 연대의 이전 명령을 내렸습니다. 하지만 에드윈 스탠튼 국방장관이 그 명령을 받고도 대통령이 바보라고 하면서 이행을 거부했습니다. 링컨은 스탠튼의 말을 듣고 이렇게 말했습니다. “스탠튼이 내가 바보라고 말했다면 틀림없이 맞을 겁니다. 그는 거의 항상
옳기 때문입니다. 내가 다시 생각해보겠습니다.” 나중에 두 사람이 서로 대화하게 되었을 때, 대통령은 자신의 결정이 심각한 실수라는 것을 바로 깨닫고 망설임 없이 명령을 철회했습니다. 스탠튼은 링컨을 바보라고 했지만, 대통령은 스탠튼이 동의하지 않았을 때 고집을 부리지 않음으로써 자신의 현명함을 보여주었습니다. 링컨은 고집을 부리는 대신, 조언을 듣고, 그것을 숙고해 보고, 그의 생각을 바꾸었습니다.

LISTENING TO WISE ADVICE

During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln once found himself wanting to please a politician, so he issued a command to transfer certain Union Army regiments. When the secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, received the order, he refused to carry it out. He said that the president was a fool. Lincoln was told what Stanton had said, and he replied: “If Stanton said I’m a fool, then I must be, for he is nearly always right. I’ll see for myself.” As the two men talked, the president quickly realized that his decision was a serious mistake, and without hesitation he withdrew it. Though Stanton had called Lincoln a fool, the president proved wise by not digging in his heels when Stanton disagreed with him. Instead, Lincoln listened to advice, considered it, and changed his mind.

Have you ever encountered someone who simply wouldn’t listen to wise advice? ( SEE 1 K INGS 1 2:1–11.) It can be infuriating, can’t it? Or, even more personal, have you ever refused to listen to advice? As Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” People may not always be right, but the same goes for us! Knowing that everyone makes mistakes, only fools assume they’re the exception. Instead, let’s exercise godly wisdom and listen to the wise advice of others— even if we initially disagree. Sometimes that’s exactly how God works for our good (V. 2). - CON CAMPBELL

우리를 향한 노래

젊은 아빠가 남자 아기를 품에 안고 부드러운 리듬으로 노래를 부르면서 천천히 흔들어주고 있었습니다. 그런데 그 아기는 청각장애를 가지고 있어 곡조나 가사를 들을 수가 없었습니다. 하지만 그럼에도 아기 아빠는 아름답고 부드러운 사랑의 몸짓으로 아들에게 노래를 불러주었습니다. 그리고 그의 노력은 아기의 기뻐하는 미소를 보며 보상받았습니다.

이 아들과 아버지가 교감하는 이미지는 스바냐서의 말씀과 아주 많이 닮아 있습니다. 구약의 선지자 스바냐는 하나님께서 그의 딸, 곧 예루살렘 사람들을 향해 기뻐하며 노래하실 거라고 말합니다(스바냐 3:17). 하나님은 그들이 받을 형벌을 없애고 원수를 쫓아내시는 것 같이, 사랑하는 그분의 백성들을 위해 좋은 일들을 하기를 즐겨 하십니다(15절). 스바냐는 그들은 더 이상 두려워할 이유가 없으며, 대신 기뻐할 이유만 존재한다고 말합니다.

예수 그리스도의 희생으로 구원받은 하나님의 자녀인 우리는 때때로 우리를 향해 풍성한 사랑으로 노래하시는 하나님께 귀를 기울이지 못하거나 싫어할 때가 있습니다. 하나님이 우리를 흠모하는 모습은 아들이 못 듣더라도 사랑스럽게 노래를 불러준 그 젊은 아빠의 모습과 비슷합니다. 그리고 우리의 형벌까지 없애주심으로 우리에게 기뻐할 이유까지 주셨습니다. 어쩌면 우리가 좀더 귀를 귀울이려고 노력할 때 하나님의 목소리에 담긴 기쁨이 크게 울려나는 것을 들을 수 있을지 모릅니다. ‘하나님 아버지, 우리가 아버지의 사랑의 곡조를 듣고, 아버지의 팔에 안전하게 안겨 있는 것을 만끽할 수 있도록 도와주소서.’

SINGING OVER US

A young father held his baby boy in his arms, singing to him and rocking him in soothing rhythm. The baby was hearing impaired, unable to hear the melody or the words. Yet the father sang anyway, in a beautiful, tender act of love toward his son. And his efforts were rewarded with a delightful smile from his little boy.

The imagery of the father-son exchange bears a striking resemblance to the words of Zephaniah. The Old Testament prophet says that God will joyfully sing over His daughter, the people of Jerusalem (ZEPHANIAH 3:17). God enjoys doing good things for His beloved people, such as taking away their punishment and turning back their enemies (V. 15). Zephaniah says they no longer have any reason for fear and instead have cause for rejoicing.

We, as God’s children redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, sometimes are hard of hearing—unable, or perhaps unwilling, to tune our ears to the exuberant love God sings over us. His adoration of us is like that of the young father, who lovingly sang to his son despite his inability to hear. He has taken away our punishment too, giving us further reason to rejoice. Perhaps we might try to listen more closely to hear the joy ringing loudly in His voice. Father, help us to hear Your loving melody and savor being held safely in Your arms. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

자연에 주목하기

최근에 친구와 함께 내가 좋아하는 산책 장소에 갔습니다. 바람이 몰아치는 언덕을 오르고, 야생화가 피어 있는 들판을 지나 우뚝 솟은 소나무들이 많은 숲으로 간 다음, 계곡으로 내려가 잠시 휴식을 취했습니다. 구름이 우리 위에서 부드럽게 떠다니고 있었고, 가까이에 시냇물이 천천히 흐르고 있었습니다. 들리는 소리는 오직 새들의 노랫소리뿐이었습니다. 제이슨과 나는 그 모든 것을 음미하면서 15분간 조용히 그곳에 서 있었습니다.

밝혀진 바와 같이, 우리가 그날 했던 행동은 상당히 치유 효과가 있었습니다. 더비 대학교의 연구에 따르면, 잠시 멈춰 자연을 관조하는 사람들이 행복 지수가 높고 불안 지수가 낮으며, 지구 환경 보존에 더 관심이 많다고 합니다. 하지만, 숲속을 걷는 것만으로는 충분치 않습니다. 구름을 ‘바라보고’, 새들의 노랫소리를 ‘들어야’ 합니다. 중요한 것은 우리가 자연 속에 ‘있는’ 것이 아니라 자연에 ‘주목하는’ 것입니다.

자연이 주는 유익에 관한 영적인 근거가 있을까요? 바울은 하나님의 능력과 본성이 창조물에 드러난다고 했습니다(로마서 1:20). 하나님은 하나님 현존의 증거로 욥에게 바다와 하늘과 별들을 보라고 하셨습니다(욥기 38-39). 예수님은 “공중의 새”와 “들의 백합화”를 관조함으로 하나님의 돌보심을 알 수 있고 염려를 줄일 수 있다고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 6:25-30). 성경을 보면, 자연에 주목하는 것이 하나의 영적 훈련입니다.

과학자들은 자연이 우리에게 왜 그렇게 긍정적으로 영향을 미치는지 의아해합니다. 그 이유 중 하나가 어쩌면 자연에 주목함으로써 자연을 창조하시고 우리를 주목해 보시는 하나님을 어렴풋이나마 알 수 있어서 그런 것이 아닐까 합니다.

NOTICING NATURE

A friend and I recently visited a favorite walking spot of mine. Climbing a windswept hill, we crossed a field of wildflowers into a forest of towering pines, then descended into a valley where we paused a moment. Clouds floated softly above us. A stream trickled nearby. The only sounds were birdsongs. Jason and I stood there silently for fifteen minutes, taking it all in.

As it turns out, our actions that day were deeply therapeutic. According to research from the University of Derby, people who stop to contemplate nature experience higher levels of happiness,
lower levels of anxiety, and a greater desire to care for the earth. Walking through the forest isn’t enough, though. You have to watch the clouds, listen to the birds. The key isn’t being in nature, but noticing it.

Could there be a spiritual reason for nature’s benefits? Paul said that creation reveals God’s power and nature (ROMANS 1:20). God told Job to look at the sea, sky, and stars for evidence of His presence (JOB 38–39). Jesus said that contemplating the “birds of the air” and “flowers of the field” could reveal God’s care and reduce anxiety (MATTHEW 6:25–30). In Scripture, noticing nature is a spiritual practice.

Scientists wonder why nature affects us so positively. Maybe one reason is that by noticing nature we catch a glimpse of the God who created it and who notices us. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

법적으로 하나님의 자녀

리즈는 남편과 함께 자녀의 입양이 법적으로 인정되었음을 증명하는 출생증명서와 여권을 받아 들고 감격의 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 이제 밀레나는 그들의 딸이요, 가족의 일원으로 영원히 남게 될 것입니다. 리즈는 그 모든 법적 절차를 생각하며, 우리가 예수님의 가족의 일원이 될 때 일어나는 “참된 변화”에 대해서도 생각해 보았습니다. 그 변화는 “우리는 이제 나면서부터 죄된 것과 상처 입은 것에 더 이상 사로잡혀 있지 않다”는 것입니다. 오히려 우리가 하나님의 자녀로 입양될 때 완전한 하나님 나라에 합법적으로 들어가게 됩니다.

바울 사도 시대에, 로마의 한 가정이 아들을 입양하면 그 아들의 법적인 신분은 완전히 바뀌었습니다. 과거에 졌던 모든 빚은 탕감 받았으며, 새로운 가족의 모든 권리와 특권을 얻게 되었습니다. 바울은 예수님을 믿는 로마의 성도들이 이 새로운 신분이 그들에게도 적용된다는 것을 이해하기를 원했습니다. 그들은 더 이상 죄와 저주에 얽매이지 않고 이제 “성령님을 따라” (로마서 8:4, 현대인의 성경) 살게 되었습니다. 성령님의 인도를 받는 사람들은 하나님의 자녀로 입양된 사람들입니다(14-15절). 그들의 법적 신분이 바뀌어 천국 시민이 된 것입니다.

우리가 구원의 선물을 받았다면, 우리도 하나님의 자녀요, 하나님 나라의 상속자요, 그리스도와 연합한 자입니다. 우리의 빚은 예수님의 희생이라는 선물로 탕감되었습니다. 우리는 더 이상 두려움과 저주 속에 살 필요가 없습니다.

LEGALLY HIS

Liz cried for joy when she and her husband received the birth certificate and passport for their child, making the adoption legally binding. Now Milena would always be their daughter, forever part of their family. As Liz pondered the legal process, she also thought of the “true exchange” that happens when we become part of Jesus’ family: “No longer are we held down by our birthright of sin and brokenness.” Rather, she continued, we enter into the fullness of God’s kingdom legally when we are adopted as His children.

In the apostle Paul’s day, if a Roman family adopted a son, his legal status would change completely. Any debts from his old life would be canceled and he would gain all of the rights and privileges of his new family. Paul wanted the Roman believers in Jesus to understand that this new status applied to them too. No longer were they bound to sin and condemnation but now they lived “according to the Spirit” (ROMANS 8:4). And those the Spirit leads are adopted as God’s children (VV. 14–15). Their legal status changed when they became citizens of heaven.

If we have received the gift of salvation, we too are God’s children, heirs of His kingdom and united with Christ. Our debts have been canceled by the gift of Jesus’ sacrifice. We no longer need to live in fear or condemnation. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
