두려움을 마주하기

워렌은 교회 사역을 위해 작은 마을로 이사했습니다. 초기에 그의 사역이 어느 정도 성공했을 때 지역 주민 중 한 사람이 그를 공격했습니다. 그 사람은 워렌의 매우 나쁜 행위를 비난하는 이야기를 꾸며내어 그 이야기를 지역 신문사에 가져가고, 심지어 그 비난의 글을 주민들에게 우편으로 발송하려고 전단지까지 인쇄했습니다. 워렌과 그의 아내는 열심히 기도하기 시작했습니다. 만약 사람들이 그 거짓말을 믿게 된다면 그들의 삶은 뒤흔들리고 말 것입니다.

다윗 왕도 한때 비슷한 경험을 했습니다. 그는 대적의 중상모략을 당했습니다. “그들이 종일 내 말을 곡해하며 나를 치는 그들의 모든 생각은 사악이라”(시편 56:5)고 그는 말했습니다. 이 지속적인 공격은 그를 두렵고 눈물 나게 만들었습니다(8절). 그러나 전투 중에 그는 이런 강력한 기도를 드렸습니다. “내가 두려워하는 날에는 내가 주를 의지하리이다...... 혈육을 가진 사람이 내게 어찌하리이까”(3-4절).

다윗의 기도는 오늘날 우리에게 하나의 본이 될 수 있습니다. ‘내가 두려워하는 날에는’, 즉 두려움과 비난의 시기에 우리는 하나님께로 향하고, ‘내가 주를 의지하리이다’, 즉 우리의 전투를 하나님의 강한 손에 맡기는 것입니다. 그리고 ‘혈육을 가진 사람이 내게 어찌하리이까’, 즉 하나님과 함께 그 상황을 맞이하는 우리는 대적하는 세력의 힘이 제한적일 수밖에 없다는 사실을 기억하는 것입니다.

그 신문사는 워렌을 비난하는 이야기를 싣지 않았습니다. 그리고 어떤 이유에서인지 전단지도 하나도 배포되지 않았습니다. 당신은 오늘 어떤 전투를 두려워합니까? 하나님께 말씀드리십시오. 하나님은 기꺼이 당신과 함께 싸우실 것입니다.

FACING FEAR

W arren moved to a small town to pastor a church. After his ministry had some initial success, one of the locals turned on him. Concocting a story accusing Warren of horrendous acts, the man took the story to the local newspaper and even printed his accusations on pamphlets to distribute to local residents by mail. Warren and his wife started praying hard. If the lie was believed, their lives would be upended.

King David once experienced something similar. He faced an attack of slander by an enemy. “All day long they twist my words,” he said, “all their schemes are for my ruin” (PSALM 56:5). This sustained assault left him fearful and tearful (V. 8). But in the midst of the battle, he prayed this powerful prayer: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. . . . What can mere mortals do to me?” (VV. 3–4).

David’s prayer can be a model for us today. When I am afraid—in times of fear or accusation, we turn to God. I put my trust in you—we place our battle in God’s powerful hands. What can mere mortals do to me?—facing the situation with Him, we remember how limited the powers against us really are.

The newspaper ignored the story about Warren. For some reason, the pamphlets were never distributed. What battle do you fear today? Talk to God. He’s willing to fight it with you. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

인간다운 모습

“싱어맨 아저씨, 왜 우세요?” 열두 살의 알버트가 나무상자를 만들고 있는 목공 장인을 보면서 물었습니다.

그는 “내 아버지가 울었고 내 할아버지가 울었기 때문에 나도 운단다.”라고 말했습니다. 목수가 어린 견습생에게 대답해주는 그 모습은 ‘초원의 집’ 방송의 따뜻한 한 장면입니다. 싱어맨은 “관을 만들다 보니 눈물이 나는구나.”라고 말했습니다.

그는 말했습니다. “어떤 남자들은 우는 것이 나약함을 나타내는 것이라 해서 울지 않지만, 나는 ‘남자는 울 수 있기 때문에 남자다’ 라고 배웠단다.”

예수님이 예루살렘을 염려하는 마음이 암탉이 그 새끼를 돌보는 것과 같다고 말씀하실 때 예수님의 눈에 감정이 북받쳤을 것입니다(마태복음 23:37). 예수님의 제자들은 종종 예수님의 눈에서 본 것이나 그가 하신 이야기에 혼란스러워했습니다. 강하다는 것에 대한 예수님의 생각은 그들과 달랐습니다. 제자들이 예수님과 함께 성전에서 나올 때 비슷한 일이 다시 발생했습니다. 제자들은 성전 건물의 웅장한 돌벽과 화려한 장식들에 예수님의 시선을 끌려고 애쓰면서(24:1), 인간의 대단한 성취 능력에 주목했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 거기서 서기 70년에 무너져내릴 성전을 보셨습니다.

예수님은 건강한 사람들은 언제 왜 울어야 하는지 알고 있다는 것을 보여주십니다. 예수님은 무엇이 주님의 마음을 아프게 하는지 아직 알지 못하는 자녀들을 위해 하나님 아버지께서 염려하시고 성령님이 신음하시기 때문에 우셨습니다.

TO BE HUMAN

“Mr. Singerman, why are you crying?” asked twelve-yearold Albert as he watched the master craftsman construct a wooden box.

“I cry,” he said, “because my father cried, and because my grandfather cried.” The woodworker’s answer to his young apprentice provides a tender moment in an episode of Little House on the Prairie. “Tears,” explained Mr. Singerman, “come with the making of a coffin.”

“Some men don’t cry because they fear it is a sign of weakness,” he said. “I was taught that a man is a man because he can cry.”

Emotion must have welled up in the eyes of Jesus as He compared His concern for Jerusalem to the care of a mother hen for her chicks (MATTHEW 23:37). His disciples were often confused by what they saw in His eyes or heard in His stories. His idea of what it meant to be strong was different. It happened again as they walked with Him from the temple. Calling His attention to the massive stone walls and magnificent decor of their place of worship (24:1), the disciples noted the strength of human accomplishment. Jesus saw a temple that would be leveled in ad 70.

Christ shows us that healthy people know when to cry and why. He cried because His Father cares and His Spirit groans for children who couldn’t yet see what breaks His heart. - MART DEHAAN

절대 혼자가 아니다

매기 퍼거슨은 잡지 ’이코노미스트 1843’에 “그것은 집이 없고 굶주리고 병에 걸린 것보다 더 끔찍한 고통이 될 수 있다.”라는 글을 썼습니다. 글의 주제가 무엇이었을까요? 외로움이었습니다. 퍼거슨은 외로움이 어떤 느낌인지 가슴 아픈 예들을 들어가며, 사회적, 경제적 지위와 상관없이 외로움이 증가하는 비율을 연대순으로 보여주었습니다.

고독감의 아픔은 우리 시대에 나타난 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 사실 외로운 상태의 고통은 옛 전도서에서도 말하고 있습니다. 흔히 솔로몬 왕이 쓴 것으로 알려진 이 책은 의미 있는 관계를 유지할 사람이 하나도 없는 사람들의 슬픔을 이야기합니다(4:7-8). 저자는 많은 부를 얻더라도 그것을 함께 나눌 사람이 없으면 그 가치를 전혀 누리지 못할 수도 있다고 한탄했습니다.

그러나 저자는 또한 친구의 좋은 점도 말합니다. 친구들의 도움으로 혼자 할 때보다 더 많은 것을 성취할 수 있으며(9절), 동무는 필요할 때 도와주고 (10절), 안락함을 주며(11절), 어려울 때 보호해줄 수 있다(12절)고 기록하고 있습니다.

외로움은 맞서야 할 심각한 싸움입니다. 하나님은 우리를 친구나 공동체가 갖는 혜택을 베풀기도 하고 받기도 하도록 만드셨기 때문입니다. 당신이 혼자라고 느낀다면 다른 사람들과 의미 있는 관계를 맺게 해달라고 하나님께 기도하십시오. 동시에 예수님의 영이 우리와 늘 함께 하심으로 믿는 사람들은 절대 혼자가 아니라는 사실에 힘을 얻으십시오(마태복음 28:20).

NEVER ALONE

“It can be an affliction more harrowing than homelessness, hunger or disease,” wrote Maggie Fergusson in The Economist’s 1843 magazine. Her subject? Loneliness. Fergusson chronicled the increasing rates of loneliness, irrespective of one’s social or economic status, using heart-wrenching examples of what it feels like to be lonely.

The hurt of feeling alone isn’t new to our day. Indeed, the pain of isolation echoes off the pages of the ancient book of Ecclesiastes. Often attributed to King Solomon, the book captures the sorrow of those who seem to lack any meaningful relationships (4:7–8). The speaker lamented that it’s possible to acquire significant wealth and yet experience no value from it because there’s no one to share it with.

But the speaker also recognized the beauty of companionship, writing that friends help you accomplish more than you could achieve on your own (V. 9); companions help in times of need (V. 10); partners bring comfort (V. 11); and friends can provide protection in difficult situations (V. 12).

Loneliness is a significant struggle—God created us to offer and receive the benefits of friendship and community. If you’re feeling alone, pray that God would help you form meaningful connections with others. In the meantime, find encouragement in the reality that the believer is never truly alone because Jesus’ Spirit is always with us (MATTHEW 28:20). - LISA M. SAMRA

불을 밝혀라

남편과 함께 대륙을 가로지르는 이사를 준비하면서 다 큰 아들들과 계속 연락이 닿을 수 있기를 바랐습니다. 나는 독특한 선물을 찾게 되었는데, 그것은 무선 인터넷으로 서로 연결되어 있어 원격으로 불을 켤 수 있는 우정 램프였습니다. 나는 아이들에게 램프를 주면서 내가 내 램프를 만지면 아이들의 램프에도 불이 켜질 거라고, 그럼으로써 내 사랑과 계속 기도하고 있음을 알려줄 반짝이는 알리미가 될 거라고 설명해주었습니다. 우리 사이의 거리가 아무리 멀어도 아이들이 램프를 건드리면 우리 집에도 불이 켜질 것입니다. 그 어느 것도 직접 대면해 만나는 순간들을 대신할 수는 없겠지만 램프에 불이 켜질 때마다 우리는 사랑받고, 또 우리를 위해 기도하는 사람이 있음을 알게 되어 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다.

하나님의 자녀들은 모두 성령의 능력으로 빛을 전하는 자의 특권을 갖고 있습니다. 우리는 하나님의 영원한 소망과 무조건적인 사랑을 전하는 빛나는 횃불로 살도록 설계되어 있습니다. 예수님의 이름으로 복음을 전하고 사람들을 섬길 때 우리는 밝게 비추는 환한 조명이 되고 살아있는 간증이 됩니다. 모든 착한 행실, 온화한 미소, 따뜻한 격려의 말, 그리고 진심 어린 기도는 하나님의 신실하심과 무조건적이고 인생을 변화시키는 그분의 사랑을 밝히 말해줍니다 (마태복음 5:14-16).

하나님이 우리를 어디로 이끄시든지, 우리가 그분을 어떻게 섬기든지, 하나님은 우리를 사용하여 다른 사람들도 하나님의 빛을 비추게 도우실 수 있습니다. 하나님이 성령님을 통해 참된 빛을 비춰주실 때, 우리는 그분의 빛과 임재하시는 사랑을 다시 반사해 보여줄 수 있습니다.

TURN ON THE LIGHT

As my husband and I prepared for a cross-country move, I wanted to ensure that we kept in touch with our grown sons. I found a unique gift, friendship lamps connected by wireless internet, which can be turned on remotely. When I gave the lamps to my sons, I explained that their lamps will turn on when I touch my lamp—to provide a shining reminder of my love and ongoing prayers. No matter how great the distance between us, a tap on their lamps would trigger a light in our home too. Though we knew nothing could replace our more personal moments of connection, we could be encouraged by knowing we’re loved and prayed for every time we turned on those lights.

All God’s children have the privilege of being light-sharers powered by the Holy Spirit. We’re designed to live as radiant beacons of God’s everlasting hope and unconditional love. When we’re sharing the gospel and serving others in the name of Jesus, we become brilliant spotlights and living testimonies. Every good deed, kind smile, gentle word of encouragement, and heartfelt prayer produces a beaming reminder of God’s faithfulness and His unconditional and life-transforming love (MATTHEW 5:14–16).

Wherever God leads us, and however we serve Him, we can be used by Him to help others shine His light. As God, by His Spirit, provides the true illumination, we can reflect the light and love of His presence. - XOCHITL DIXON

예수님처럼

신학자 브루스 웨어는 어렸을 때 우리에게 예수님처럼 되라고 요구하는 베드로전서 2:21-23을 읽고 실망했습니다. 웨어는 그의 저서 “인간 예수 그리스도”에서 아이답게 자기의 분노를 이렇게 적었습니다. “공평하지 않다고 나는 결론을 내렸다. ‘어떤 죄도 짓지 않은’ 사람의 자취를 따르라고 하는 문장에서 특별히 그랬다. 이것은 전적으로 상식 밖이었다...... 나는 하나님이 어떻게 우리에게 그것을 진지하게 받아들이라고 하실 수 있는지 정말 알 수 없었다.”

웨어가 성경의 그런 도전을 왜 그렇게 어렵게 여겼는지 이해가 됩니다! 오래된 합창곡에 “예수님처럼, 예수님처럼. 내 소망은 예수님처럼 되는 것” 이라는 가사가 있습니다. 그러나 웨어가 우리는 그렇게 될 수 없다고 한 것은 맞는 말입니다. 우리 자신만의 힘으로는 결코 예수님처럼 될 수 없습니다.

하지만 우리는 혼자 내버려져 있지 않습니다. 성령께서 하나님의 자녀에게 임하심으로, 부분적이나마 우리 안에 그리스도의 모습을 이룰 수 있게 하셨습니다(갈라디아서 4:19). 그러므로 성령에 대해 설명한 바울 서신의 위대한 장에서 “하나님이 미리 아신 자들을 또한 그 아들의 형상을 본받게 하기 위하여 미리 정하셨다”(로마서 8:29)는 말씀이 크게 놀랍지 않습니다. 하나님은 그분의 일이 우리 안에서 완성되는 것을 보실 것입니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리 안에 사시는 예수님의 영을 통해 그 일을 이루실 것입니다.

우리 안에서 성령님이 일하시도록 순종할 때 진정 예수님을 더 닮게 됩니다. 그것이 우리를 향하신 하나님의 큰 바람이라는 것을 알 때 얼마나 위로가 되는지 모릅니다!

LIKE JESUS

As a boy, theologian Bruce Ware was frustrated that 1 Peter 2:21–23 calls us to be like Jesus. Ware wrote of his youthful exasperation in his book The Man Christ Jesus. “Not fair, I determined. Especially when the passage says to follow in the steps of one ‘who did no sin.’ This was totally outlandish . . . . I just couldn’t see how God could really mean for us to take it seriously.”

I understand why Ware would find such a biblical challenge so daunting! An old chorus says, “To be like Jesus, to be like Jesus. My desire, to be like Him.” But as Ware rightly noted, we are incapable of doing that. Left to ourselves, we could never become like Jesus.

However, we’re not left to ourselves. The Holy Spirit has been given to the child of God, in part so that Christ can be formed in us (GALATIANS 4:19). So it should come as no surprise that in Paul’s great chapter on the Spirit we read, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (ROMANS 8:29). God will see His work completed in us. And He does it through the Spirit of Jesus living in us.

As we yield to the Spirit’s work in us, we truly become more like Jesus. How comforting to know that’s God’s great desire for us! - BILL CROWDER

엄청난 실패를 겪고 나면 우리는 이제는 너무 늦었고 목적과 가치 있는 삶을 살 기회는 다 사라졌다고 생각하기 쉽습니다. 이것은 뉴욕에서 가장 보안이 철저한 감옥에 수감되었던 엘리아스가 복역할 때 느꼈던 것과 같은 심정이었습니다. “약속들, 내 미래에 대한 약속, 내가 무언가가 되겠다는 약속은...... 이제 다 사라져버렸다.”

이런 엘리아스의 삶을 바꾸기 시작한 것은 “교도소에서의 성취”라는 바드대학의 학위 과정이었습니다. 그 과정을 이수하면서 엘리아스는 토론 팀에 참여하였고, 2015년 하버드대학 토론 팀과의 토론대회에서 승리를 거두었습니다. 엘리아스에게 있어서 “그 토론팀의 일원이 된 것은......자신의 약속들이 완전히 사라지지 않았다는 것이 증명된 계기가 되었습니다.”

예수님 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑의 복음이 우리에게도 좋은 소식이라는 것을 이해하게 될 때 우리 마음에도 비슷한 변화가 일어납니다. 우리는 놀라운 마음으로 깨닫기 시작합니다. ‘아직 늦지 않았어. 하나님은 아직도 나를 위한 미래를 준비하고 계셔.’

그리고 그것은 노력으로 얻거나 빼앗길 수 없는 미래이며, 오직 하나님의 엄청난 은혜와 능력에만 달려있는 미래입니다(베드로후서 1:2-3). 그것은 세상과 우리 마음의 절망에서 벗어나 하나님의 “영광과 덕”(3절)으로 가득 찬 미래입니다. 그리고 그것은 상상을 초월하는 그리스도의 약속(4절) 안에서 안전한 미래이며, “하나님의 자녀가 누릴 영광된 자유”(로마서 8:21, 새번역) 로 변화된 미래입니다.

UNIMAGINABLE PROMISES

In our moments of greatest failure, it can be easy to believe it’s too late for us, that we’ve lost our chance at a life of purpose and worth. That’s how Elias, a former inmate at a maximumsecurity prison in New York, described feeling as a prisoner. “I had broken . . . promises, the promise of my own future, the promise of what I could be.”

It was Bard College’s “Prison Initiative” college degree program that began to transform Elias’ life. While in the program, he participated on a debate team, which in 2015 debated a team from Harvard—and won. For Elias, being “part of the team . . . [was] a way of proving that these promises weren’t completely lost.”

A similar transformation happens in our hearts when we begin to understand that the good news of God’s love in Jesus is good news for us too. It’s not too late, we begin to realize with wonder. God still has a future for me.

And it’s a future that can neither be earned nor forfeited, dependent only on God’s extravagant grace and power (2 PETER 1:2–3). A future where we’re set free from the despair in the world and in our hearts into one filled with His “glory and goodness” (V. 3). 은혜로 강해진다

미국 남북전쟁 중 탈영에 대한 처벌은 사형이었습니다. 그러나 북부 연합군은 탈영병들을 거의 처형하지 않았습니다. 그들의 총사령관인 아브라함 링컨이 탈영병 거의 모두를 사면해주었기 때문입니다. 이 일은 링컨의 관대함은 탈영을 더 많이 부추길 뿐이라고 믿었던 에드윈 스탠튼 전쟁 장관을 격분시켰습니다. 그러나 링컨은 용기를 잃고 전투의 열기 속에서 두려움에 굴복한 병사들의 심정을 이해했습니다. 병사들은 그렇게 공감하는 링컨을 사랑했습니다. 병사들은 그들의 “아버지 아브라함”을 사랑했고, 그 사랑 때문에 링컨에게 더욱더 충성을 다하고 싶어 했습니다.

STRENGTHENED BY GRACE

During the American Civil War, the penalty for desertion was execution. But the Union armies rarely executed deserters because their commander-in-chief, Abraham Lincoln, pardoned nearly all of them. This infuriated Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of War, who believed that Lincoln’s leniency only enticed would-be deserters. But Lincoln empathized with soldiers who had lost their nerve and who had given in to their fear in the heat of battle. And his empathy endeared him to his soldiers. They loved their “Father Abraham,” and their affection led the soldiers to want to serve Lincoln all the more.

When Paul calls Timothy to join him in “suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus” (2 TIMOTHY 2:3), he calls him to a tough job description. A soldier is to be completely dedicated, hard-working, and selfless. He’s to serve his commanding officer, Jesus, wholeheartedly. But in reality, we sometimes fail to be His good soldiers. We don’t always serve Him faithfully. And so Paul’s opening phrase is important: “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (V. 1). Our Savior is full of grace. He empathizes with our weaknesses and forgives our failures (HEBREWS 4:15). And just as the Union soldiers were encouraged by Lincoln’s compassion, so believers are strengthened by the grace of Jesus. We want to serve Him all the more because we know He loves us. - CON CAMPBELL

우리는 하나님이 아니다

‘순전한 기독교’에서 C.S. 루이스는 우리가 교만한지 아닌지를 알아보려면 자신에게 몇 가지 질문을 해보라고 합니다. “다른 사람들이 나를 모욕하거나, 내게 관심을 보이지 않거나,......나를 가르치려 들거나 뽐낼 때, 나는 그것을 얼마나 싫어하는가?” 루이스는 교만을 “최고의 악”이라 할 수 있는 악덕이자 가정과 국가의 불행의 주요 원인으로 보았습니다. 그는 교만을 사랑, 만족, 심지어 상식까지도 작동 못하도록 먹어없애는 “영적인 암”이라고 불렀습니다.

교만은 아주 오래전부터 문제였습니다. 하나님은 에스겔 선지자를 통해 강력한 해안도시 두로의 지도자에게 교만하지 말라고 경고하시며, 왕의 교만이 그의 몰락을 가져올 거라고 말씀하셨습니다. “네 마음이 하나님의 마음 같은 체하였으니 그런즉 내가 이방인......을 거느리고 와서 너를 치리니”(에스겔 28:6–7). 그렇게 되면 왕은 자기가 하나님이 아니라 인간이라는 것을 알게 될 것이었습니다(9절).

교만과 대조되는 것은 겸손입니다. 루이스는 그것을 하나님을 아는 것을 통해 우리가 받는 미덕이라고 이름 지었습니다. 루이스는 우리가 하나님과 사귐을 갖게 되면 “즐거이 겸손”해져서, 이전에 우리를 불안하고 불행하게 만들었던, 자신이 존엄하다는 말도 안 되는 생각을 내려놓고 홀가분해진다고 말했습니다.

하나님을 더 경배할수록 하나님을 더 많이 알게 되고 하나님 앞에서 더 많이 겸손해질 수 있습니다. 기쁨과 겸손으로 사랑하고 섬기는 사람들이 될 수 있기를 소원합니다.

WE’RE NOT GOD

In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis recommended asking ourselves some questions to find out if we’re proud: “How much do I dislike it when other people snub me, or refuse to take any notice of me, . . . or patronize me, or show off?” Lewis saw pride as a vice of the “utmost evil” and the chief cause of misery in homes and nations. He called it a “spiritual cancer” that eats up the very possibility of love, contentment, and even common sense.

Pride has been a problem throughout the ages. Through the prophet Ezekiel, God warned the leader of the powerful coastal city of Tyre against his pride. He said the king’s pride would result in his downfall: “Because you think you are . . . as wise as a god, I am going to bring foreigners against you” (EZEKIEL 28:6–7). Then he would know he wasn’t a god, but a mortal (V. 9).

In contrast to pride is humility, which Lewis named as a virtue we receive through knowing God. Lewis said that as we get in touch with Him, we become “delightedly humble,” feeling relieved to be rid of the silly nonsense about our own dignity that previously made us restless and unhappy.

The more we worship God, the more we’ll know Him and the more we can humble ourselves before Him. May we be those who love and serve with joy and humility. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

찬양을 잊지 말라

은퇴한 오페라 가수 낸시 구스타프슨은 어머니를 찾아뵙고 치매로 쇠약해진 모습을 보고는 큰 충격을 받았습니다. 어머니는 딸을 알아보지 못했고 말도 거의 없었습니다. 매달 한 번씩 몇 번을 방문하고 나서 낸시에게 좋은 생각이 떠올랐습니다. 어머니에게 노래를 불러주기 시작한 것입니다. 음악 소리에 어머니의 눈이 환해지더니 20분 동안이나 같이 노래를 부르기 시작했습니다! 노래가 끝나고 낸시의 어머니는 자기들이 “구스타프슨 가족 중창단”이라고 농담하며 웃었습니다. 이 극적인 반전은 어떤 전문치료사들의 말처럼 음악의 힘이 잃어버린 기억을 다시 살릴 수 있다는 것을 말해주었습니다. “전에 즐겨 부르던 노래들”을 부르면 또한 기분이 좋아지고, 낙상이 줄어들며, 응급실 가는 일도 줄어들고, 진정제도 덜 필요한 것으로 나타났습니다.

REMEMBER TO SING

Nancy Gustafson, a retired opera singer, was devastated when she visited her mother and observed her decline from dementia. Her mom no longer recognized her and barely spoke. After several monthly visits, Nancy had an idea. She started singing to her. Her mother’s eyes lit up at the musical sounds, and she began singing too—for twenty minutes! Then Nancy’s mom laughed, joking they were “The Gustafson Family Singers!” The dramatic turnaround suggested the power of music, as some therapists conclude, to evoke lost memories. Singing “old favorites” has also been shown to boost mood, reduce falls, lessen visits to the emergency room, and decrease the need for sedative drugs.

More research is underway on a music-memory link. Yet, as the Bible reveals, the joy that comes from singing is a gift from God—and it’s real. “How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!” (PSALM 147:1).

Throughout the Scriptures, in fact, God’s people are urged to lift their voices in songs of praise to Him. “Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things” (ISAIAH 12:5). “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him” (PSALM 40:3). Our singing inspires us but also those who hear it. May we all remember: our God is great and worthy of praise. - PATRICIA RAYBON

절박한 해결책

17세기 후반 오렌지의 윌리엄(윌리엄 3세)은 의도적으로 나라 땅의 많은 부분을 침수시켰습니다. 이 네덜란드 군주는 침략해온 스페인 사람을 몰아내기 위해 그런 극단적인 조치를 취했던 것입니다. 그러나 그것은 효과가 없었고 방대한 넓이의 농경지가 바다로 유실되었습니다. “절박한 시기에는 절박한 조치가 필요하다.”라는 말도 있습니다.

삶이 짜증 나고 풀리지 않을 때엔 그것을 하나님께로 향할 기회로 보시겠습니까, 아니면 혼자서 더 절박하게 해결책을 찾으시겠습니까?

DESPERATE SOLUTIONS

In the late seventeenth century, William of Orange intentionally flooded much of his nation’s land. The Dutch monarch resorted to such a drastic measure in an attempt to drive out the invading Spaniards. It didn’t work, and a vast swath of prime farmland was lost to the sea. “Desperate times call for desperate measures,” they say.

In Isaiah’s day, Jerusalem turned to desperate measures when the Assyrian army threatened them. Creating a water storage system to endure the siege, the people also tore down houses to shore up the city walls. Such tactics may have been prudent, but they neglected the most important step. “You built a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the Old Pool,” God said, “but you did not look to the One who made it, or have regard for the One who planned it long ago” (ISAIAH 22:11).

We aren’t likely to encounter a literal army outside our homes today. “The batterings always come in commonplace ways and through commonplace people,” said Oswald Chambers. Yet, such “batterings” are genuine threats. Thankfully, they also bring with them God’s invitation to turn to Him first for what we need.

When life’s irritations and interruptions come, will we see them as opportunities to turn to God? Or will we seek our own desperate solutions? - TIM GUSTAFSON
