다르게 생각하기

대학시절 나는 어느 여름의 상당 부분을 베네수엘라에서 보냈습니다. 음식은 너무나 좋았고, 사람들은 낙천적이고, 날씨도 아름답고, 모르는 사람도 친절히 대해주었습니다. 그러나 하루 이틀 지나면서 시간관리에 관한 나의 기준은 그곳의 새로운 친구들과 맞지 않는다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 정오에 점심을 먹기로 했다면 그것은 12시에서 1시 사이의 아무 때라도 괜찮다는 뜻이었습니다. 마찬가지로 회의나 여행에서도 시간 계획은 꼭 지킨다기보다 대략 그렇다는 뜻이었습니다. 내가 가졌던 “시간을 지킨다”는 개념은 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 더 우리의 문화의 산물이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

우리 모두는 대개 자기도 모르는 사이에 주변 문화의 가치에 따라 모습이 형성되어 갑니다. 바울은 이 문화의 힘을 “세상”이라고 부릅니다(로마서 12:2). 여기서 “세상”은 물리적인 우주를 말하기보다는 우리의 존재 안에 스며든 사고방식을 가리킵니다. 그것은 우리가 어떤 특정한 장소와 시간에 살다 보니 그냥 전해 받게 되는, 아무 의심 없이 받아들여지는 관행이나 지침이 되는 사고방식들을 말합니다.

바울은 우리에게 깨어 있어 “이 세대를 본받지 말라”고 경고합니다. 대신에 “[우리의] 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아”야 합니다(2절). 우리는 우리를 사로잡는 사고방식이나 신념 체계를 수동적으로 받아들이지 말고, 하나님의 사고방식을 적극적으로 추구하고 하나님의 “선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻”(2절)을 아는 법을 배우라고 부름받았습니다. 우리가 다른 어떤 목소리보다 하나님을 따르는 것을 배울 수 있기를 소원합니다.

THINKING DIFFERENTLY

During college, I spent a good chunk of a summer in Venezuela. The food was astounding, the people delightful, the weather and hospitality beautiful. Within the first day or two, however, I recognized that my views on time management weren’t shared by my new friends. If we planned to have lunch at noon, this meant anywhere between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. The same for meetings or travel: timeframes were approximations without rigid punctuality. I learned that my idea of “being on time” was far more culturally formed than I’d realized.

All of us are shaped by the cultural values that surround us, usually without us ever noticing. Paul calls this cultural force the “world” (ROMANS 12:2). Here, “world” doesn’t mean the physical universe, but rather refers to the ways of thinking pervading our existence. It refers to the unquestioned assumptions and guiding ideals handed to us simply because we live in a particular place and time.

Paul warns us to be vigilant to “not conform to the pattern of this world.” Instead, we must be “transformed by the renewing of [our] mind” (V. 2). Rather than passively taking on the ways of thinking and believing that engulf us, we’re called to actively pursue God’s way of thinking and to learn how to understand His “good, pleasing and perfect will” (V. 2). 꼭 닮음

우리는 외출 중에 남편의 가족을 어렸을 때부터 알고 있던 한 부인을 만났습니다. 그녀는 남편 앨런을 보고 다시 아들 제비어를 보고는 “아들이 아빠를 꼭 빼닮았네요.” 라고 말했습니다. “눈도, 미소도. 맞아요. 아빠랑 똑같아요.” 그 부인은 아버지와 아들이 아주 닮았다고 하며 기뻐하면서, 또 둘의 성격도 비슷해 보인다고까지 했습니다. 하지만 그들은 여러 면에서 닮아 보임에도 불구하고 내 아들은 아버지의 모습을 완벽히 다 보여주지는 못합니다.

아버지를 완벽하게 보여주는 단 하나의 아들이 있습니다. 바로 예수님 입니다. 그리스도는 “보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상이요 모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 이십니다”(골로새서 1:15). 만물이 다 그 안에서 그로 말미암고 그를 위하여 창조되었습니다(16절) “그가 만물보다 먼저 계시고 만물이 그 안에 함께 섰느니라”(17절).

우리는 시간을 내어 기도하고 성경을 공부하면서 육신을 입으신 하나님인 예수님을 바라봄으로 하나님의 성품을 발견할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분이 성경말씀 속에서, 그리고 우리의 일상 속에서 사람들과 어떻게 소통하시는지를 살펴봄으로써 우리로 하나님의 사랑을 행동으로 증거하라고 권유하십니다. 우리의 삶을 그리스도께 드리고 성령을 선물로 받으면 사랑의 하나님 아버지를 알고 신뢰하는 가운데 자라갈 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리를 변화시켜 그의 성품을 닮게 하시고, 우리로 그를 위해 살 수 있게 하십니다.

다른 사람들이 우리가 예수님과 꼭 닮았다고 하는 말을 들을 수 있다면 얼마나 기쁠까요!

SPITTING IMAGE

During an outing, we met a woman who had known my husband’s family since he was a child. She looked from Alan to our son, Xavier. “He’s the spitting image of his daddy,” she said. “Those eyes. That smile. Yep. Looks just like him.” As the woman delighted in acknowledging such a strong resemblance between father and son, she even noted similarities in their personalities. Still, though they are alike in many ways, my son doesn’t reflect his father perfectly.

There’s only one Son—Jesus—who reflects His Father completely. Christ is the “image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (COLOSSIANS 1:15). In Him and through Him and for Him all things were created (V. 16). “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (V. 17).

We can spend time in prayer and Bible study, discovering the Father’s character by looking at Jesus—God in the flesh. He invites us to witness His love in action by examining how He interacts with others in Scripture and in our day-to-day living. After surrendering our lives to Christ and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can grow in knowing and trusting our loving Father. He transforms us to reflect His character, so we can live for Him.

구조 신호 보내기

알래스카 산악지대의 한 정착민의 오두막에 불이 나 그 정착민은 몹시 추운 겨울날에, 그것도 미국에서 가장 추운 주에서 적당한 피난처도 없이 약간의 식량만 남게 되었습니다. 그러던 3주 후, 비행기가 그을은 검댕으로 눈 위에 크게 써 놓은 SOS 구조 신호를 보고 나서 마침내 그는 구조되었습니다.

시편 저자 다윗도 분명히 곤경에 처해 있었습니다. 그는 그를 시기하여 죽이려 하는 사울 왕에게 쫓기고 있었습니다. 그래서 가드로 도망쳐 목숨을 부지하기 위해 미친척 했습니다(사무엘상 21장 참조). 이런 사건들로부터 다윗이 하나님께 기도로 울부짖으며 평안을 찾게 된(4, 6절) 시편 34편이 태어났습니다. 하나님이 그의 간구를 들으시고 그를 구원해주셨습니다.

SENDING OUT AN SOS

When the hut of a settler in a mountainous region of Alaska caught fire, the settler was left without adequate shelter and with few provisions in the coldest state in the US—in the middle of a frigid winter. Three weeks later, the man was finally rescued when an aircraft flew over and spied the large SOS he had stamped out in the snow and darkened with soot.

The psalmist David was certainly in dire straits. He was being pursued by jealous King Saul who sought to kill him. And so he fled to the city of Gath, where he pretended to be insane in order to preserve his life (SEE 1 SAMUEL 21). Out of those events emerged Psalm 34, where David cried out in prayer to God and found peace (VV. 4, 6). God heard his pleas and delivered him.

Are you in a desperate situation and crying out for help? Be assured that God still hears and responds to our desperate prayers today. As with David, He’s attentive to our distress calls and takes away our fears (V. 4)—and sometimes even saves us “out of [our] troubles” (V. 6).

Scripture invites us to “cast [our] cares on the Lord and he will sustain [us]” (PSALM 55:22). When we turn our difficult circumstances over to God, we can trust that He’ll provide the help we need. We’re secure in His capable hands. - ALYSON KIEDA

새 일

민물이 부족한 지역에서는 농사가 어렵습니다. 이 문제 해결을 돕기 위해 ‘씨워터 그린하우스’(해수 온실)라는 회사에서 한가지 새로운 것을 만들었습니다. 아프리카의 소말릴란드와 그와 비슷한 기후를 가진 나라들에 “냉각 주택”이란 것을 만든 것입니다. 이 냉각 주택은 태양열 펌프를 이용하여 골판지로 만든 벽에 바닷물을 조금씩 뿌립니다. 그러면 물이 판 아래로 흐르면서 소금은 뒤에 남게 됩니다. 그렇게 해서 생긴 많은 양의 민물은 그 구조물 안에서 증발하여 과일과 야채 농작물들이 잘 자랄 수 있는
습기가 있는 곳이 되게 해줍니다.

하나님은 이사야 선지자를 통해 고대 이스라엘을 위해 “사막에 강”을 내며 “새 일”을 행하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다(이사야 43:19). 이 새 일은 하나님이 전에 애굽 군대로부터 그의 백성들을 구원하시기 위해 행하셨던 것과 대조됩니다. 홍해 이야기를 기억하십니까? 하나님은 그의 백성들이 과거를 기억하기를 원하셨지만, 그 과거가 현재 그들의 삶에 관여하시는 하나님의 모습을 가리는 것을 원치 않으셨습니다(18절). “보라 내가 새 일을 행하리니 이제 나타낼 것이라 너희가 그것을 알지 못하겠느냐 반드시 내가 광야에 길을 내리니”(19절).

과거를 ‘돌아보는 것’은 공급하시는 하나님을 향한 우리의 믿음을 더 굳게 해줄 수 있지만, 과거에 ‘사는 것’은 성령께서 오늘 행하시는 모든 새로운 일을 보지 못하게 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님께 현재 어떻게 활동하시는지, 곧 어떻게 그의 백성들을 도우시고, 새롭게 하시고, 지키시는지 보여 달라고 간구할 수 있습니다. 우리가 이것을 깨닫고 하나님과 동역하여 가까이 혹은 멀리 있는 모든 사람들의 필요를 채울 수 있기를 소원합니다.

SOMETHING NEW

Farming is difficult in areas that lack fresh water. To help solve this problem, the Seawater Greenhouse company has created something new: “cooling houses” in Somaliland, Africa, and other countries with similar climates. Cooling houses use solar pumps to drizzle saltwater over walls made of corrugated cardboard. As the water moves down each panel, it leaves its salt behind. Much of the remaining fresh water evaporates inside the structure, which becomes a humid place where fruit and vegetable crops can flourish.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God promised to do a “new thing” as He provided “streams in the wasteland” for ancient Israel (ISAIAH 43:19). This new thing contrasted with the old thing He had done to rescue His people from the Egyptian army. Remember the Red Sea account? God wanted His people to recall the past but not let it overshadow His current involvement in their lives (V. 18). He said, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness” (V. 19).

While looking to the past can bolster our faith in God’s provision, living in the past can blind us to all the fresh work of God’s Spirit today. We can ask God to show us how He’s currently moving— helping, remaking, and sustaining His people. May this awareness prompt us to partner with Him to meet the needs of others, both near and far. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

기쁨의 잔치

내 친구 샤론은 친구 데이브의 십대 딸 멜리사가 죽기 1년 전에 죽었습니다. 두 사람 다 교통사고로 비극적인 죽음을 맞이했습니다. 그런데 어느 날 밤 내 꿈에 샤론과 멜리사가 함께 나타났습니다. 그들은 큰 연회장에서 장식을 걸면서 웃으며 대화를 나누고 있었는데 내가 그 방에 들어가도 모른체했습니다. 하얀 테이블보가 깔린 긴 테이블 위에는 황금 접시들과 받침 달린 컵들이 놓여있었습니다. 장식하는 것을 도와줄까 하고 물어도 그들은 내 말이 들리지 않는 듯 계속 일만 했습니다. 그러다가 샤론이 “이 파티는 멜리사의 결혼 리셉션이야.”라고 말했습니다.

“신랑이 누구야?” 내가 물었습니다. 두 사람 다 대답하지 않고 웃기만 했습니다. 그리고 다 알고 있다는 듯 서로 바라보았습니다. 마침내 나는 그 신랑이 바로 예수님이라는 생각이 떠올랐습니다. “예수님이 신랑이야.” 나는 그렇게 속삭이다가 잠에서 깼습니다.

내 꿈은 예수님이 다시 오실 때 그를 믿는 성도들이 함께 누릴 기쁨의 잔치를 생각나게 합니다. 요한계시록에서는 그것이 “어린 양의 혼인잔치” 라 불리는 호화로운 연회로 그려져 있습니다(19:9). 예수님의 초림을 대비해 사람들을 준비시켰던 세례 요한은 주님을 “세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양”(요한복음 1:29)이라고 불렀습니다. 또 예수님을 “신랑”으로, 그리고 자신을 주님을 기다린 “친구”(신랑의 들러리처럼)라고 불렀습니다(3:29).

그 잔칫날에, 그리고 영원토록 우리는 신랑 되신 예수님과 샤론과 멜리사와 모든 하나님의 백성들과 함께 영원한 사귐을 누리게 될 것입니다.

A JOYFUL CELEBRATION

My friend Sharon passed away one year prior to the death of my friend Dave’s teenage daughter Melissa. They both had been tragically killed in car accidents. One night both Sharon and Melissa were in my dream. They giggled and talked as they hung streamers in a large banquet hall and ignored me when I stepped into the room. A long table with white tablecloths had been set with golden plates and goblets. I asked if I could help decorate, but they didn’t seem to hear me and kept working. But then Sharon said, “This party is Melissa’s wedding reception.”

“Who’s the groom?” I asked. Neither responded but smiled and looked at each other knowingly. Finally, it dawned on me—it’s Jesus! “Jesus is the groom,” I whispered as I woke up.

My dream brings to mind the joyful celebration believers in Jesus will share together when He returns. It’s portrayed in Revelation as a lavish feast called “the wedding supper of the Lamb” (19:9). John the Baptist, who prepared people for the first coming of Christ, had called Him “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (JOHN 1:29). He also referred to Jesus as “the bridegroom” and to himself as the “friend” (like the best man) who waited for Him (3:29).

On that banquet day and for all eternity we will enjoy unbroken fellowship with Jesus, our groom, and with Sharon and Melissa and all of God’s people. - ANNE CETAS

째깍거리는 시계

일꾼들이 얼어붙은 호수에서 얼음을 잘라내어 얼음창고에 넣고 있었는데, 그들 중 한 명이 그 창문 없는 건물 안에서 시계를 잃어버린 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그와 친구들이 시계를 찾아보았지만 아무도 찾지 못했습니다.

그들이 포기하고 나가는 것을 본 한 어린 소년이 그 건물 안으로 들어가더니 곧 시계를 가지고 나타났습니다. 사람들이 어떻게 시계를 찾았는지 물어보자 아이는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “그냥 앉아서 조용히 있었더니 곧 시계가 째깍거리는 소리를 들을 수 있었어요.”

성경에는 잠잠히 있는 것의 가치에 대해 많이 말하고 있습니다. 그도 그럴 것이 하나님도 때론 세미한 음성으로 말씀하시기 때문입니다(열왕기상 19:12). 바쁜 삶 속에서는 하나님의 음성을 듣기가 어려울 수 있습니다. 하지만 우리가 서두르는 것을 멈추고 하나님과 성경말씀과 함께 조용한 시간을 가진다면 우리의 생각 속에서 하나님의 부드러운 음성을 들을 수 있을 것입니다.

시편 37:1-7 말씀은 악을 행하는 자들의 “악한 꾀”에서 우리를 구해주시고, 피난처를 제공해주시며, 믿음을 지키게 도와주시는 하나님을 우리가 신뢰할 수 있다고 확신시켜 줍니다. 그러나 온 사방이 소란스러울 때엔 어떻게 그럴 수 있을까요?

7절 말씀은 “여호와 앞에 잠잠하고 참고 기다리라”고 권면합니다. 우리는 기도 후에 몇 분 동안 잠잠히 있는 것을 배우는 것으로 시작할 수도 있고, 아니면 성경을 조용히 읽고 말씀들이 우리 마음에 스며들게 하는 것으로 시작할 수도 있습니다. 그러면 아마도 째깍거리는 시계처럼 하나님의 지혜가 조용하고 지속적으로 우리에게 말씀하시는 것을 들을 수 있을 것입니다.

THE TICKING WATCH

A group of workers were cutting ice out of a frozen lake and storing it in an icehouse when one of them realized he’d lost his watch in the windowless building. He and his friends searched for it in vain.

After they gave up, a young boy who’d seen them exit went into the building. Soon, he emerged with the watch. Asked how he’d found it, he replied: “I just sat down and kept quiet, and soon I could hear it ticking.”

The Bible talks much about the value of being still. And no wonder, for God sometimes speaks in a whisper (1 KINGS 19:12). In the busyness of life, it can be hard to hear Him. But if we stop rushing about and spend some quiet time with Him and the Scriptures, we may hear His gentle voice in our thoughts.

Psalm 37:1–7 assures us that we can trust God to rescue us from the “wicked schemes” of evil people, give us refuge, and help us stay faithful. But how can we do this when turmoil is all around us?

Verse 7 suggests: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” We could start by learning to keep silent for a few minutes after prayer. Or by quietly reading the Bible and letting the words soak into our hearts. And then, perhaps, we’ll hear His wisdom speaking to us, quiet and steady as a ticking watch. - LESLIE KOH

희망을 갖고 기다리기

영화 ‘하치: 어느 개의 이야기’를 보면 한 대학교수가 길 잃은 아키타 품종의 하치라는 강아지와 친구가 됩니다. 그 개는 교수의 퇴근길에 기차역으로 매일 마중을 나가는 것으로 그의 충성심을 보여주었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 교수가 뇌졸중으로 쓰러져 죽게 됩니다. 하치는 그날 기차역에서 오랜 시간을 기다렸고, 그 후 10년 동안 매일 사랑하는 주인을 마중 나와 기다렸습니다.

누가는 장차 오실 주님을 인내하며 기다렸던 시므온이라는 사람의 이야기를 들려줍니다(누가복음 2:25). 성령께서 그에게 나타나 그가 메시아를 보기 전에는 죽지 않을 것이라고 알려주었습니다(26절). 그래서 시므온은 하나님의 백성들에게 “구원”을 가져다주실 분을 계속 기다렸습니다(30절). 마리아와 요셉이 예수님과 함께 성전에 들어갔을 때 성령께서 시므온에게 아기 예수가 바로 그분이라고 속삭여주었습니다. 기다림은 마침내 끝이 났습니다! 시므온은 모든 사람들의 희망이요 구원과 위로가 되시는 예수님을 그의 팔에 안고 찬양했습니다(28-32절).

우리도 지금 기다리는 시절을 지나고 있다면 이사야 선지자의 다음과 같은 말을 생생하게 들을 수 있기를 바랍니다. “오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비하지 않겠고 걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리로다”(이사야 40:31). 우리가 예수님의 재림을 기다리는 동안 하나님께서 우리에게 필요한 희망과 힘을 날마다 새롭게 공급해주십니다.

WAITING IN HOPE

In the movie Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, a college professor befriended a stray Akita puppy named Hachi. The dog expressed his loyalty by waiting at the train station each day for the professor to return from work. One day, the professor suffered a fatal stroke. Hachi waited hours at the train station, and for the next ten years he returned each day—awaiting His loving master.

Luke tells the story of a man named Simeon who patiently waited for the coming of his Master (LUKE 2:25). The Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon that he would not see death until he saw the Messiah (V. 26). As a result, Simeon kept waiting for the One who would provide “salvation” for God’s people (V. 30). When Mary and Joseph entered the temple with Jesus, the Holy Spirit whispered to Simeon that He was the One! The wait was finally over! Simeon held Christ in his arms—the hope, salvation, and comfort for all people (VV. 28–32).

If we find ourselves in a season of waiting, may we hear the words of the prophet Isaiah with fresh ears: “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (ISAIAH 40:31). As we await Jesus’ return, He provides the hope and strength we need for each new day. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

위를 바라보기

짝눈 오징어는 햇빛이 거의 들지 않는 깊은 바닷속의 “약광층” 에서 삽니다. 이 오징어의 별명은 아주 다르게 생긴 두 눈 때문에 붙여졌습니다. 왼쪽 눈은 시간이 지나면서 오른쪽 눈보다 거의 두 배 가까이 커집니다. 연체동물을 연구하는 과학자들은 그 오징어의 작은 오른쪽 눈은 바닷속 깊이 더 어두운 곳을 내려다볼 때 사용하고, 큰 왼쪽 눈은 햇빛을 향해 위를 바라볼 때 사용한다고 추측합니다.

뜻밖에 이 오징어는 이 땅에서 현재를 살면서 동시에 “그리스도와 함께 다시 살리심을 받은”(골로새서 3:1) 우리가 기다리는 확실한 미래를 사는 모습을 보여줍니다. 골로새인들에게 보낸 편지에서 바울은 우리의 생명이 “그리스도와 함께 하나님 안에 감추어져” 있으니 “위의 것을 생각하라”고 권면합니다 (2-3절).

천국에서의 삶을 기다리며 이 땅을 살아가는 우리는 현실에서 우리 주위에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 훈련된 눈으로 계속 주시합니다. 그러나 오징어의 왼쪽 눈이 시간이 지나면서 더 커지고 위쪽에서 일어나는 일에 더 민감해져 가는 것처럼, 우리도 하나님께서 영적 영역에서 일하시는 방식을 더 잘 알 수 있도록 자라가야 합니다. 예수님 안에 살아있다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 충분히 이해 못하더라도, “위”를 바라볼 때 우리의 눈으로 점점 더 많은 것을 보아 알게 될 것입니다.

LOOKING UP

The cockeyed squid lives in the ocean’s “twilight zone” where sunlight barely filters through the deep waters. The squid’s nickname is a reference to its two extremely different eyes: the left eye develops over time to become considerably larger than the right—almost twice as big. Scientists studying the mollusk have deduced that the squid uses its right eye, the smaller one, to look down into the darker depths. The larger, left eye, gazes upward, toward the sunlight.

The squid is an unlikely depiction of what it means to live in our present world and also in the future certainty we await as people who “have been raised with Christ” (COLOSSIANS 3:1). In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, he insists we ought to “set [our] minds on things above” because our lives are “hidden with Christ in God” (VV. 2–3).

As earth-dwellers awaiting our lives in heaven, we keep an eye trained on what’s happening around us in our present reality. But just as the squid’s left eye develops over time into one that’s larger and more sensitive to what’s happening overhead, we too can grow in our awareness of the ways God works in the spiritual realm. We may not have yet fully grasped what it means to be alive in Jesus, but as we look “up,” our eyes will begin to see it more and more. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

빛을 믿으라

‘강한 회오리를 동반한 폭설’이 예보되었습니다. 그것은 기압이 떨어져 겨울폭풍이 갑자기 강해질 때 발생합니다. 밤이 되자, 눈보라가 심해져 덴버 공항으로 향하는 고속도로는 ‘거의’ 한치 앞도 볼 수 없게 되었습니다. 하지만 딸이 비행기를 타고 집으로 오고 있다면 우리는 할 수 있는 모든 수단을 강구하게 됩니다. 여분의 옷과 물을 챙기고 (고속도로 중간에 갇히게 되는 상황을 대비해서), 아주 천천히 운전하고, 끊임없이 기도하며, 마지막으로 똑같이 중요한 자동차 전조등을 의지해서 앞으로 갑니다. 그러면 때로는 거의 불가능한 일을 이루기도 합니다.

예수님은 자신의 죽음을 가져올(요한복음 12:31-33), 그리고 자신을 따르는 자들의 믿음과 섬김을 시험할(26절) 폭풍이 곧 닥칠 거라고 예언하셨습니다. 곧 어둡게 되어 ‘거의’ 한치 앞도 볼 수 없게 될 것이었습니다. 그때 예수님은 제자들에게 무엇을 하라고 말씀하셨습니까? 빛(예수님)을 믿으라, 의지하라 (36절). 그것만이 앞으로 계속 나아가고 믿음을 지킬 수 있는 유일한 길이었던 것입니다.

예수님은 잠시 동안만 더 그들과 함께 있을 것이었습니다. 그러나 믿는 자들에게는 주의 성령이 함께 있어 우리의 앞 길을 비추며 계속 인도해 주십니다. 우리도 ‘거의’ 한치 앞을 볼 수 없는 어둠의 때를 지날 때가 있습니다. 그러나 빛이신 주님을 믿고 의지함으로, 우리는 계속 전진해 나갈 수 있습니다.

TRUST THE LIGHT

The weather forecast said bomb cyclone. That’s what happens when a winter storm rapidly intensifies as the atmospheric pressure drops. By the time night fell, the blizzard conditions made the highway to the Denver airport almost impossible to see. Almost. But when it’s your daughter who’s flying home to visit, you do what you have to do. You pack extra clothes and water (just in case you get stranded on the highway), drive very slowly, pray without ceasing, and last but not least, trust your headlights. And sometimes you can achieve the almost impossible.

Jesus foretold of a storm on the horizon, one that would involve His death (JOHN 12:31–33), and one that would challenge His followers to stay faithful and serve (V. 26). It was going to get dark and be almost impossible to see. Almost. So what did Jesus tell them to do? Believe, or trust, the Light (V. 36). That was the only way they could keep going forward and stay faithful.

Jesus would only be with them a little while longer. But believers have His Spirit as our constant guide to light the way. We too will face dark times when it’s almost impossible to see the way ahead. Almost. But by believing, or trusting in the Light, we can press on. - JOHN BLASE

잃은 것을 되찾다

젊은 목사는 전화기 대리점에서 나쁜 소식을 들을 마음의 준비를 단단히 하고 있었습니다. 성경공부 중에 실수로 스마트폰을 떨어뜨렸는데, 완전히 못 쓰게 된 줄 알았으나 그렇지 않았습니다. 점원은 그 목사의 성경공부 동영상과 사진들을 포함한 전화기 속의 모든 자료를 복구해 주었습니다. 목사는 말했습니다. “그녀는 내가 지웠던 사진들까지도 복구해주었습니다. 그리고 그 가게는 내 부서진 전화기도 새것으로 바꿔줬습니다. 잃어버린 것보다 ‘더’ 돌려받은 것이지요.”

다윗은 한때 악한 아말렉 족속의 공격을 받은 후 복구를 위한 원정에 나섰습니다. 블레셋의 방백들에게 외면당한 다윗과 그의 군대는 자신들의 시글락 성읍이 아말렉 족속에 의해 침략당해 불에 타버린 것을 알게 되었던 것입니다. 게다가 자기들의 아내와 자녀들을 포함하여 “거기에 있는 여인들은 다” 사로잡혀 갔습니다(사무엘상 30:2-3). 그래서 “다윗과 그와 함께 한 백성이 울 기력이 없도록 소리 높여 울었습니다”(4절). 병사들은 그들의 지도자 다윗을 향한 너무 쓰라린 마음에 그를 “돌로 치자”고 했습니다(6절).

그러나 “다윗은......그의 하나님 여호와를 힘입고 용기를 얻었습니다” (6절). 하나님께서 약속하신 대로 다윗은 아말렉 족속을 추격하여 “아말렉 사람들이 빼앗아 갔던 모든 것을 도로 찾고......그들이 약탈하였던 것 곧 무리의 자녀들이나 빼앗겼던 것은 크고 작은 것을 막론하고 아무것도 잃은 것이 없이 모두 다윗이 도로 찾아왔습니다”(18-19절). 영적인 공격을 당하여 소망까지 “빼앗기게” 될 때, 하나님 안에서 새로운 힘을 얻으시기를 바랍니다. 하나님은 삶의 모든 어려운 순간에 우리와 함께 하실 것입니다.

RECOVERING WHAT’S LOST

At the phone store, the young pastor steeled himself for bad news. His smartphone, accidentally dropped during our Bible class, was a total loss, right? Actually, no. The store clerk recovered all of the pastor’s data, including his Bible videos and photos. She also recovered “every photo I’d ever deleted,” he said. The store also “replaced my broken phone with a brand-new phone.” As he said, “I recovered all I had lost and more.”

David once led his own recovery mission after an attack by the vicious Amalekites. Spurned by Philistine rulers, David and his army discovered the Amalekites had raided and burned down their town of Ziklag—taking captive “the women and everyone else in it,” including all their wives and children (1 SAMUEL 30:2–3). “So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep” (V. 4). The soldiers were so bitter with their leader David that they talked of “stoning him” (V. 6).

“But David found strength in the Lord his God” (V. 6). As God promised, David pursued the Amalekites and “recovered everything the Amalekites had taken . . . . Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back” (VV. 18–19). As we face spiritual attacks that “rob” us even of hope, may we find renewed strength in God. He will be with us in every challenge of life. - PATRICIA RAYBON
