당신의 명성은 어떻습니까?

어느 고등학교의 스포츠 행사 때마다 테드는 관중석에서 응원하는 사람들 중에 가장 덩치가 크고 제일 목소리가 큰 사람이었습니다. 퇴행성 질환으로 몸이 쇠약해지기 전에 그는 6피트 6인치(약 2미터)의 키에 몸무게가 290파운드(약 132킬로그램)까지 나갔었습니다. 테드가 외치는 “블루!”(학교의 상징색)라는 구호나, 학교행사 때 캔디를 던져주던 일들은 전설이 되어 그는 “빅 블루”라는 별명을 얻게 되었습니다.

하지만 테드가 그 지역에서 유명해진 것은 응원 때문도 아니었고, 또 젊었을 때의 알코올 중독 때문도 아니었습니다. 그것보다 하나님과 가족에 대한 사랑, 그리고 주는 것을 좋아하는 따뜻한 사람으로 기억될 것입니다. 그의 삶을 추모하는 4시간에 걸친 장례식에서 많은 사람들이 앞으로 나와 복음 안에 있는 예수님의 권능으로 구원받은 한 남자의 예수님을 닮은 힘찬 삶에 대해 간증했습니다.

에베소서 5장 8절에서, 바울은 신자들에게 “전에는 어둠이더니”라고 한 후, 곧이어 “이제는 주 안에서 빛이라 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라”고 상기시켜 주었습니다. 그것은 예수님을 믿는 모든 신자들이 들어야 할 말씀입니다. 테드와 같은 빛의 자녀들은 이 세상의 어둠 속에 빠져 있는 사람들을 위해 할 일이 많습니다. “어둠의 열매 없는 일”에 참여해서는 안 됩니다(3-4, 11절 참조). 그리스도의 빛을 받은 믿는 사람들은 우리 지역뿐 아니라 온 세상에서 남달리 구별되는 뛰어난 증인들이 되어야 합니다(14절). 어떻게 달라야 할까요? 어둠과 빛이 다른 것처럼 그렇게 달라야 합니다.

WHAT’S YOUR REPUTATION?

At local high school sporting events, Ted was the largest and loudest cheerleader in the stands. Before a degenerative condition took its toll on him, he stood six feet six inches tall and weighed 290 pounds. Ted’s crowd-stirring chants of “Blue!” (the school’s color) and candy-tossing at school events were legendary, earning him the name “Big Blue.”

But Ted’s reputation in his community wasn’t just for cheerleading. Neither was it for the alcohol addiction he experienced as a younger man. No, he will be remembered for his love for God and family, for his generosity and kindness. At a four-hour “homegoing service” that celebrated his life, person after person came forward to testify about the vibrant Christlike ways of a man who’d been rescued from darkness by the power of Jesus through the gospel.

In Ephesians 5:8, Paul reminded believers that they “were once darkness” but quickly noted, “but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” Such is the call for every believer in Jesus. Children of light, like Ted, have much to offer those engulfed in this world’s darkness. “Fruitless deeds of darkness” are to be avoided (SEE VV. 3–4, 11). Those in our communities and throughout the world need the brilliant, distinctive witness of those upon whom Jesus has shined (V. 14). How distinctive? 단단히 붙잡으라

헤리엇 터브맨은 19세기 미국의 위대한 영웅 중의 한 사람입니다. 그녀는 미국 북부의 자유 지역으로 탈출하여 자신이 먼저 노예 상태에서 벗어난 후 300명이 넘는 같은 처지의 노예들을 자유로 인도하는 놀라운 용기를 보여주었습니다. 그녀는 자신이 얻은 자유를 누리는 것에 만족하지 않고 열아홉 차례에 걸쳐 노예제도가 있는 여러 주로 되돌아가 친구와 가족과 모르는 사람들까지 자유로 인도해내는 일을 감행했으며, 때로는 캐나다까지 걸어서 그들을 인도하기도 했습니다.

무엇이 터브맨으로 하여금 그처럼 용감한 일을 하게 했을까요? 믿음이 깊은 그녀는 언젠가 이렇게 말했습니다. “항상 하나님께 이렇게 말했어요. 제가 하나님을 단단히 붙잡고 있을 테니, 하나님께서 저를 책임져 주셔야 해요.” 사람들을 인도하여 노예 생활에서 벗어나게 할 때 하나님께 전적으로 의지했던 것이 그녀가 성공할 수 있었던 보증 마크였던 것입니다.

하나님의 손을 “단단히 붙잡는다”는 것이 무슨 의미일까요? 이사야서의 한 구절은 우리가 하나님의 손을 잡을 때 실제로는 하나님이 우리를 붙잡으시는 것이라는 사실을 알려줍니다. 이사야는 하나님의 말씀을 이렇게 전합니다. “이는 나 여호와 너의 하나님이 네 오른손을 붙들고 네게 이르기를 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 도우리라”(41:13).

헤리엇이 하나님을 단단히 붙잡자 하나님이 그녀를 책임져 주셨습니다. 당신은 지금 어떤 도전에 직면해 있습니까? 하나님께서 당신의 손과 삶을 “붙잡고” 계시므로 하나님의 손을 단단히 잡고 계십시오. “두려워하지 마십시오.” 하나님이 당신을 도와주십니다.

HOLD STEADY

Harriet Tubman was one of the great American heroes of the nineteenth century. Showing remarkable courage, she guided more than three hundred fellow slaves to freedom after she first escaped slavery by crossing into free territory in the United States North. Not content to simply enjoy her own freedom, she ventured back into slave states nineteen times to lead friends, family, and strangers to freedom, sometimes guiding people on foot all the way to Canada.

What drove Tubman to such brave action? A woman of deep faith, she at one time said this: “I always told God, I’m going to hold steady on you, and you’ve got to see me through.” Her dependence on God’s guidance as she led people out of slavery was a hallmark of her success.

What does it mean to “hold steady” to God? A verse in the prophecy of Isaiah might help us see that in reality it’s He who holds us as we grab His hand. Isaiah quotes God, who said, “I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (41:13).

Harriet held tightly to God, and He saw her through. What challenges are you facing? Hold steady to God as He “takes hold” of your hand and your life. “Do not fear.” He will help you. - DAVE BRANON

믿음에 투자하라

한 소년이 열두 번째 맞는 크리스마스 때 트리 밑에 있는 선물들을 열어보는 시간을 애타게 기다렸습니다. 그는 새 자전거를 몹시 갖고 싶어 했습니다. 하지만 마지막 선물로 ‘사전’을 받으면서 그의 바람은 물거품이 되었습니다. 사전의 첫 장에는 “엄마 아빠가 찰스에게, 1958년. 학교에서 최선을 다하길 바라는 소망과 사랑으로”라고 쓰여 있었습니다.

그 후 10년 동안 척은 정말 공부를 잘 했습니다. 대학을 졸업하고 나중에 항공 훈련도 마쳤습니다. 그는 조종사로 해외에서 일하면서 열정을 다해 어려운 사람들을 돕고 그들에게 예수님을 전했습니다. 이 선물을 받은 지 60여 년이 지난 지금 그는 낡아버린 그 사전을 손주들에게 보여주며 그 이야기를 나누었습니다. 그것은 그에게 부모님이 사랑으로 자신의 미래에 투자한 하나의 상징이 되었고, 척은 지금도 그것을 소중히 여기고 있습니다. 그러나 그는 부모님이 하나님과 성경에 대해 가르치시면서 그의 믿음이 자라도록 매일 투자한 것에 대해 더 감사하고 있습니다.

FAITH INVESTMENTS

On his twelfth Christmas, the boy eagerly awaited the opening of the gifts under the tree. He was yearning for a new bike, but his hopes were dashed—the last present he received was a dictionary. On the first page, he read: “To Charles from Mother and Daddy, 1958. With love and high hopes for your best work in school.”

In the next decade, Chuck did do well in school. He graduated from college and later, aviation training. He became a pilot working overseas, fulfilling his passion to help people in need and to share Jesus with them. Now some sixty years after receiving this gift, he shared the well-worn dictionary with his grandchildren. It had become for him a symbol of his parents’ loving investment in his future, and Chuck still treasures it. But he’s even more grateful for the daily investment his parents made in building his faith by teaching him about God and the Scriptures.

Deuteronomy 11 talks about the importance of taking every opportunity to share the words of Scripture with children: “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down andwhen you get up” (V. 19).

For Chuck, the eternal values planted when he was a boy bloomed into a lifetime of service for his Savior. With God’s enablement, who knows how much our investment in someone’s spiritual growth will yield. - CINDY HESS KASPER

축복을 기다림

방콕의 인기 있는 한 식당은 지난 45년간 매일 조금씩 채워가며 계속 끓여온 육수로 만든 수프를 제공합니다. “영원한 국”이라 불리는 이 방식은 중세 때부터 유래되었습니다. 가끔은 “남은 음식”이 며칠 후 더 맛있어지는 것처럼 오랫동안 끓이면 맛이 우러나와 독특한 맛을 만들어냅니다. 그 식당은 태국에서 가장 맛있는 육수로 여러 번 상을 받았습니다.

좋은 일들은 종종 시간이 오래 걸리곤 하지만 우리 인간의 성품은 기다리는 것을 힘들어합니다. 성경 곳곳에도 “어느 때까지리이까”라는 질문이 등장합니다. 하박국 선지가가 이에 맞는 예입니다. 그는 하박국서를 이런 질문으로 시작합니다. “여호와여 내가 부르짖어도 주께서 듣지 아니하시니 어느 때까지리이까”(하박국 1:2). 하박국(“붙잡고 싸우는 자”라는 뜻의 이름)은 하나님이 무자비한 바벨론 왕국의 침략을 통해 그의 나라(유다) 를 심판하신다는 것을 예언하면서, 남을 착취하는 부패한 백성이 번성하는
것을 하나님이 어떻게 그냥 내버려 두시는지를 놓고 씨름했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 소망을 주시며 그분의 때에 다시 회복하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. “이 [하나님의 도움의] 묵시는 정한 때가 있나니......비록 더딜지라도 기다리라 지체되지 않고 반드시 응하리라”(2:3).

바벨론 포로생활은 70년 동안 이어졌습니다. 인간의 셈으로는 긴 시간 이지만 하나님은 언제나 신실하시고 그분의 말씀을 지키십니다.

하나님의 가장 큰 축복의 어떤 것은 오래 걸릴 수 있습니다. 비록 더딜지라도 계속 그분을 바라보십시오! 하나님은 완전한 지혜와 돌보심으로 모든 축복을 준비하십니다. 하나님은 기다리면 언제나 좋은 것을 주십니다.

WAITING FOR A BLESSING

A popular restaurant in Bangkok serves soup from a broth that has been cooking for forty-five years and is replenished a bit each day. The practice, called “perpetual stew,” dates back to medieval times. Just as some “leftovers” taste better a few days later, the extended cooking time blends and creates unique flavors. The restaurant has won multiple awards for the most delicious broth in Thailand.

Good things often take time, but our human nature struggles with patience. The question “How long?” occurs throughout the Bible. One poignant example is from the prophet Habakkuk, who begins his book by asking, “How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?” (HABAKKUK 1:2). Habakkuk (whose name means “grappler”) prophesied God’s judgment on his country (Judah) through the invasion of the ruthless Babylonian Empire, and he wrestled with how God could allow corrupt people to prosper as they exploited others. But God promised hope and restoration in His own time: “For the revelation [of God’s help] awaits an appointed time . . . . Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay” (2:3).

The Babylonian captivity lasted seventy years. By human reckoning that’s a long time, but God is always faithful and true to His Word.

Some of God’s best blessings may be long in coming. Though they linger, keep looking to Him! He prepares every blessing with perfect wisdom and care—and He’s always worth waiting for. - JAMES BANKS

더 잘 자라게 가지치기

러시안 세이지(관목 식물의 일종)에 꿀벌이 사뿐히 내려앉는 것을 보며 나는 무성히 자란 그 관목이 발산하는 색조에 감탄하였습니다. 나무의 눈부신 푸른 꽃들은 우리의 눈길을 끌고 벌들도 끌어당겼습니다. 그러나 작년 가을까지만 해도 나는 이 나무가 꽃을 다시 피울 수 있을지 의심스러웠습니다. 왜냐하면 장인 장모님이 이 페리윙클(푸른 꽃을 피우는 식물)을 밑동까지 가지치기하시는 것을 보고 그것을 없애버리려고 그러시는 줄 알았기 때문입니다. 하지만 그때엔 무자비하게 느껴졌던 가지치기였지만 지금 그 빛나는 결과를 바라보고 있습니다.

사정없이 잘라낸 데서 놀랍도록 아름다운 것이 나오는 그 모습에, 예수님도 믿는 자들 가운데 행하시는 하나님의 역사를 가지치기 이야기로 설명하셨는지 모릅니다. 요한복음 15장에서 예수님은 “나는 참포도나무요 내 아버지는 농부라...... 무릇 열매를 맺는 가지는 더 열매를 맺게 하려 하여 그것을 깨끗하게 하시느니라”(1-2절)라고 말씀하십니다.

예수님의 말씀은 하나님이 좋은 때나 나쁜 때나 언제든지 우리 안에서 영적인 회복과 결실을 위해 일하고 계신다는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다(5절). 살다가 어려움이 생기고 정서도 바닥나 “가지치기”의 과정에 들어서면 언제 다시 살아날 수 있을까 의문스러울 수도 있습니다. 그러나 그리스도께서는 그분께 계속 붙어있으라고 권하십니다. “가지가 포도나무에 붙어 있지 아니하면 스스로 열매를 맺을 수 없음 같이 너희도 내 안에 있지 아니하면 그러하리라”(4절).

예수님으로부터 영적인 영양분을 지속적으로 얻을 때 우리 삶에 나타나는 아름다움과 결실들이(8절) 하나님의 선하심을 세상에 드러내게 될 것입니다.

PRUNED TO THRIVE

As I watched a bumblebee land lightly on the Russian sage, I marveled at the bush’s lush branches exploding with color. Its brilliant blue blossoms attracted eyes and bees alike. Yet only last fall, I’d wondered if it would ever blossom again. When my wife’s parents trimmed the periwinkle plant down to a stub, I’d assumed they’d decided to get rid of it. But now I was witnessing the radiant result of pruning that had seemed brutal to me.

The surprising beauty that results from harsh cuts may be one of the reasons Jesus chose pruning imagery to describe God’s work among believers. In John 15, He says, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. . . . Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful” (VV. 1–2).

Jesus’ words remind us that in the good times and bad, God is always working in us toward spiritual renewal and fruitfulness (V. 5). During “pruning” seasons of suffering or emotional barrenness, we may wonder if we’ll ever thrive again. But Christ encourages us to continue to stick close to Him: “No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me” (V. 4).

As we continually draw spiritual nourishment from Jesus, the resulting beauty and fruitfulness in our lives (V. 8) will show the world God’s goodness. - ADAM R. HOLZ

반석 위에 지은 집

미국의 어느 주에는 3만 4천호나 되는 집이 잘못된 기초공사로 붕괴될 위험에 처해있습니다. 한 콘크리트 회사가 어느 채석장에서 돌에 광물질이 섞여있는 것을 모른 채 돌을 캐내었는데 시간이 지나면서 이것 때문에 콘크리트가 갈라지고 부서지게 된 것입니다. 이미 6백여 채의 집이 무너졌고 그 숫자는 시간이 지나면서 급증할 것으로 보입니다.

예수님은 잘못된 기초 위에 집을 짓는 것에 비유하시면서 우리 삶을 불안정한 토대 위에 짓는 것은 그보다 훨씬 위험하다고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리 중 어떤 사람들은 삶을 견고한 반석 위에 지어서 극심한 폭풍우를 만나도 든든히 서 있을 수 있지만, 어떤 사람들은 모래 위에 세워 폭풍이 몰아칠 때 “심하게” 무너져버린다고 하셨습니다(마태복음 7:27). 흔들리지 않는 토대와 무너지는 토대의 한 가지 차이는 그리스도의 말씀을 “실천”하느냐 않느냐는 것입니다(26절). 문제는 주님의 말씀을 ‘듣느냐’ 아니냐가 아니라, 주님께서 힘주실 때 그 말씀을 ‘실천하느냐’ 않느냐 하는 것입니다.

세상에는 많은 지혜와 더불어 많은 조언과 도움들이 있고 그중 많은 것이 선하고 유익합니다. 그러나 하나님의 진리에 겸손히 순종하는 것 외의 다른 기초에 우리 삶을 세우면 문제를 일으키게 됩니다. 하나님이 주시는 힘으로 그분의 말씀을 행하는 것만이 집, 곧 우리 ‘삶’을 반석 위에 짓는 유일한 길입니다.

A HOUSE ON A ROCK

As many as 34,000 homes in one US state are at risk of collapsing due to faulty foundations. Without realizing it, a concrete company pulled stone from a quarry laced with a mineral that, over time, causes concrete to crack and disintegrate. The foundations of nearly six hundred homes have already crumbled, and that number will likely skyrocket over time.

Jesus used the image of building a home atop a faulty foundation to explain the far riskier danger of building our lives on unsteady ground. He explained how some of us construct our life on sturdy rock, ensuring that we hold solid when we face fierce storms. Others of us, however, erect our lives on sand; and when the tempests rage, our lives tumble “with a great crash” (MATTHEW 7:27). The one distinction between building on an unshakable foundation and a crumbling one is whether or not we put
Christ’s words “into practice” (V. 26). The question isn’t whether or not we hear His words, but whether we practice them as He enables us.

There’s much wisdom offered to us in this world—plus lots of advice and help—and much of it is good and beneficial. If we base our life on any foundation other than humble obedience to God’s truth, however, we invite trouble. In His strength, doing what God says is the only way to have a house, a life, built on rock. - WINN COLLIER

용서가 있는 미래

남아프리카공화국은 아파르트헤이트(인종차별 정책) 정부 체제에서 민주주의로 전환하던 1994년 당시, 아파르트헤이트 체제 때 저질러진 범죄 행위를 어떻게 해결해야 할지 심각한 문제에 봉착했습니다. 국가 지도자들은 과거사를 덮어둘 수 없었지만, 단순히 그 범죄에 대해 가혹한 형벌을 내리면 국가의 상처를 더 심화시킬 위험이 있었습니다. 남아공 성공회의 첫 흑인 대주교인 데스먼드 투투는 그의 저서 ‘용서 없이는 미래도 없다’에서 이렇게 회고했습니다. “우리도 보복적인 정의로 충분히 정의로울 수 있었다. 하지만 그랬다면 남아공은 잿더미가 되었을 것이다.”

새 민주정부는 진실화해위원회를 세워서 진실과 정의, 자비를 모두 추구하는 쉽지 않은 길을 택했습니다. 죄를 지은 자가 진심으로 죄를 고백하고 보상하고자 하면 회복의 길을 열어주었습니다. 용기 있게 진실을 직면함으로써 이 나라는 치유의 걸음을 내디딜 수 있었습니다.

남아공의 딜레마에서 우리는 우리 모두가 겪는 문제점을 볼 수 있습니다. 우리는 정의와 자비를 둘 다 함께 행하라는 부르심을 받았지만(미가 6:8), 정의를 행하는 것이 종종 보복으로 왜곡되기도 하고, 자비는 책임을 덮는 것으로 오해되기도 합니다.

우리가 나아가야 할 유일한 길은 “악을 미워하면서도”(로마서 12:9) 우리가 변화되어 “이웃”에게 악을 행하지 않기를 바라게 되는 그런 사랑입니다 (13:10). 우리는 그리스도의 영을 힘입음으로 선으로 악을 이기는(12:21) 미래의 의미를 깨달을 수 있습니다.

A FUTURE WITH FORGIVENESS

In 1994, when South Africa made the transition from government by apartheid (imposed racial segregation) to a democracy, it faced the difficult question of how to address the crimes committed under apartheid. The country’s leaders couldn’t ignore the past, but merely imposing harsh punishments on the guilty risked deepening the country’s wounds. As Desmond Tutu, the first black Anglican Archbishop of South Africa, explained in his book No Future Without Forgiveness, “We could very well have had justice, retributive justice, and had a South Africa lying in ashes.”

Through establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, the new democracy chose the difficult path of pursuing truth, justice, and mercy. Those guilty of crimes were offered a path to restoration—if they were willing to confess their crimes and seek to make restitution. Only by courageously facing the truth could the country begin to find healing.

In a way, South Africa’s dilemma mirrors the struggle we all face. We’re called to pursue both justice and mercy (MICAH 6:8), but mercy is often misunderstood to be a lack of accountability, while pursuing justice can become distorted into pursuing revenge.

Our only path forward is a love that not only “hates what is evil” (ROMANS 12:9) but also longs for the transformation and good of our “neighbor” (13:10). Through the power of Christ’s Spirit, we can learn what it means to have a future of overcoming evil with good (12:21). MONICA LA ROSE

용기의 옷을 입기

앤드류는 복음의 문이 닫힌 나라에 살고 있습니다. 그에게 어떻게 신앙을 숨기고 있는지 묻자 그는 숨기지 않는다고 했습니다. 그는 교회를 홍보하는 버튼을 달고 다니며, 경찰에 체포될 때마다 그들에게 “당신들도 예수님이 필요합니다.”라고 말합니다. 앤드류는 누가 그와 함께하고 있는지 알기 때문에 용기가 있습니다.

엘리야는 이스라엘 왕이 자신을 잡으려고 군사 오십 명을 보냈을 때에도 두려워하지 않았습니다(열왕기하 1:9). 선지자는 하나님께서 그와 함께하심을 알았으며, 하늘에서 불을 내려 군사들을 태워버렸습니다. 왕이 다시 군사를 보냈지만 엘리야는 다시 같은 일을 행했습니다(12절). 왕은 다시 군사를 보냈습니다. 그러나 세 번째 군사들은 이전 군사들에게 있었던 일을 전해 들었기 때문에, 지휘관이 자기 군사들을 살려달라고 엘리야에게 간청했습니다. 엘리야가 군사들을 두려워했던 것 이상으로 그들이 엘리야를 더 두려워했기에, 여호와의 사자가 엘리야에게 이제는 안전하니 그들과 함께 내려가라고 말했습니다(13-15절).

예수님은 우리가 불을 내려 적을 태워 달라는 기도를 하는 것을 원치 않으십니다. 제자들이 예수님께 불을 명하여 하늘로부터 내려 사마리아 마을을 태워버려도 되는지 물었을 때 예수님은 그들을 꾸짖으셨습니다(누가복음 9:51-55). 우리는 그때와 다른 시대에 살고 있습니다. 하지만 예수님은 우리가 엘리야의 담대함을 가지고, 우리를 위해 죽으신 구세주를 다른 이들에게 전하는 데 준비가 되어 있기를 바라십니다. 이것은 마치 한 사람이 오십 명을 상대하는 것 같이 보일지도 모르지만, 사실은 한 분께서 오십 명을 상대하고 계시는 것입니다. 우리가 용기를 내어 다른 이들을 사랑하고 그들에게 다가갈 때, 예수님은 우리에게 필요한 것들을 공급해 주십니다.

WEARING OUR COURAGE

Andrew lives in a country that’s closed to the gospel. When I asked how he keeps his faith a secret, he said he doesn’t. He wears a button that advertises his church, and whenever he’s arrested he tells the police that “they need Jesus too.” Andrew has courage because he knows who’s on his side.

Elijah refused to be intimidated, even when the king of Israel sent fifty soldiers to arrest him (2 KINGS 1:9). The prophet knew God was with him, and he called down fire that consumed the platoon. The king sent more soldiers, and Elijah did it again (V. 12). The king sent more, but the third platoon had heard about the others. The captain begged Elijah to spare his soldiers’ lives. They were more afraid of him than he’d ever been of them, so the angel of the Lord told Elijah it was safe to go with them (VV. 13–15).

Jesus doesn’t want us to call down fire on our enemies. When the disciples asked if they could call down fire on a Samaritan village, Jesus rebuked them (LUKE 9:51–55). We’re living in a different time. But Jesus does want us to have Elijah’s boldness—to be ready to tell everyone about the Savior who died for them. It may seem like one person taking on fifty, but it’s actually One on fifty. Jesus provides what we need to courageously love and reach out to others. MIKE WITTMER

숨가쁨

우리 집 근처에 있는 대형 철물점의 한 부서에는 커다란 녹색 버튼이 설치되어 있습니다. 거기서 일하는 종업원이 자리에 없을 때 그 버튼을 누르면 타이머가 작동되는데, 1분 이내에 서비스를 받지 못하면 할인된 가격에 물건을 살 수 있습니다.

우리는 이런 경우에서처럼 신속히 서비스 받기를 좋아합니다. 하지만 서비스를 제공하는 입장에서는 빠른 서비스 때문에 종종 고통이 따르기도 합니다. 오늘날 많은 사람들은 일을 하면서 마음이 급해지고, 장시간 근무를 하며, 하루에도 여러 번 이메일을 확인하고, 점점 긴박해가는 마감 시간을 맞추는 것 때문에 압박감을 느낍니다. 대형 철물점의 고객 서비스 전략은 우리 생활 전반에 스며들어 서두르는 문화를 만들어냈습니다.

하나님은 이스라엘 자손에게 안식일을 지키라고 말씀하실 때 중요한 이유를 덧붙이셨습니다. “너는 기억하라 네가 애굽 땅에서 종이 되었다” (신명기 5:15). 그곳에서 그들은 바로의 과도한 시간 통제에 시달리며 끊임없이 일을 해야만 했습니다(출애굽기 5:6-9). 이제 자유롭게 된 그들은 그들 및 그들을 섬기는 자들 모두 일주일에 하루를 온전히 쉬어야 했습니다(신명기 5:14). 하나님의 통치 안에서는 얼굴이 상기되거나 숨이 가쁜 사람들이 있어서는 안 되었습니다.

당신은 얼마나 자주 지칠 정도로 일합니까? 혹은 얼마나 자주 당신을 기다리게 만드는 사람들 때문에 조급해 합니까? 우리 서로 휴식을 취하십시다. 서두르는 문화는 바로의 것이지 하나님의 것이 아닙니다.

OUT OF BREATH

There’s a home-improvement store near me that has a big green button in one of its departments. If no assistant is present, you push the button, which starts a timer. If you’re not served within a minute, you get a discount on your purchase.

We like being the customer in this scenario who enjoys the speedy service. But the demand for fast service often takes a toll when we’re the one expected to deliver it. So many of us today feel rushed doing our jobs, working long hours, checking email multiple times a day, and feeling pressured to meet tighter and tighter deadlines. The customer service tactics of the home improvement store have seeped into all our lives, creating a culture of rush.

When God told the Israelites to keep a Sabbath, He added an important reason: “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt” (DEUTERONOMY 5:15). There they’d been forced to work ceaselessly under Pharaoh’s excessive time constraints (EXODUS 5:6–9). Now freed, they were to give themselves a whole day each week to ensure they and those who served them could rest (DEUTERONOMY 5:14). Under God’s rule, there were to be no flushfaced,out-of-breath people.

How often do you work to the point of exhaustion or get impatient with people who keep you waiting? Let’s give ourselves and each other a break. A culture of rush is Pharaoh’s doing, not God’s. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

거센 물결

워싱턴 DC의 국립 흑인 역사 문화 박물관에 전시된 노예생활의 참혹한 현실과 그 여파에 관한 것들을 살펴보다가 감사하게도 ‘사색의 마당’ 이라는 것을 보게 되었습니다. 이 고요한 방에는 청동 유리로 된 반투명 벽이 있는데 천장에서 아래쪽 웅덩이로 물이 흐르는 것처럼 보입니다.

평화로운 이곳에 앉아서 둘러보니 벽에 새겨진 마틴 루터 킹 주니어 목사의 글이 눈에 들어왔습니다. “정의를 물같이, 공의를 거센 물결같이 흐르게 할 때까지 우리는 일하며 투쟁할 것입니다.” 이 힘 있는 말은 구약의 아모스서에서 따온 것입니다.

아모스 선지자는 절기를 지키고 제사를 드리는 등, 종교 활동에는 열심이지만 마음은 하나님으로부터 떠나 있는 사람들 속에서 살고 있었습니다 (아모스 5:21-23). 그러나 하나님은 그들의 행위를 거부하셨습니다. 가난하고 억압받는 자들을 정의롭게 대할 것을 요구하는 명령을 포함한 하나님의 명령들을 그들이 저버렸기 때문이었습니다.

하나님은 그의 백성들이 하나님과 타인에 대한 사랑이 없는 종교행위를 그만두고, 모든 사람의 행복에 진정한 관심을 보이기를 원하신다고 아모스는 기록했습니다. 그것은 마치 닿는 곳마다 생명을 불어넣는 거센 물결 같은 관대한 삶의 모습을 말하는 것입니다.

예수님도 하나님을 사랑하는 것이 이웃을 사랑하는 것과 연결되어 있다는 동일한 진리를 가르쳐주셨습니다(마태복음 22:37-39). 우리가 하나님을 사랑하려고 할 때, 정의 또한 소중히 여기는 마음으로 그렇게 할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A MIGHTY STREAM

Among the many exhibits and artifacts exploring the harsh reality of slavery and its aftermath in the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC, I was grateful to discover the Contemplative Court. This tranquil room features translucent walls of bronze glass, and water appears to rain down from the ceiling into a pool.

As I sat in that peaceful space, a quote on the wall from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. caught my eye: “We are determined . . . to work and fight until justice rains down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.” These powerful words are drawn from the Old Testament book of Amos.

Amos was a prophet living among a people who were involved in religious activities, such as celebrating festivals and offering sacrifices, but whose hearts were far from God (AMOS 5:21–23). God rejected their activities because they’d turned away from His commands, including those regarding justice toward the needy and oppressed.

nstead of religious ceremonies devoid of love for God and others, Amos wrote that God longed for His people to demonstrate genuine concern for the welfare of all people—a generous way of living that would be a mighty river bringing life wherever it flowed.

Jesus taught the same truth that loving God is connected with loving our neighbors (MATTHEW 22:37–39). As we seek to love God, may it come from hearts that also treasure justice. LISA M. SAMRA
