마침내 얻은 자유

참혹한 레바논 내전 당시 5년간 인질로 잡혀 있었던 영국기자 존 맥카티는 20년이 지나서야 자신이 석방되도록 협상해주었던 사람을 만날 수 있었습니다. 마침내 유엔 특사 지안도메니코 피코를 만난 맥카티는 간단히 이렇게 말했습니다. “제게 자유를 주셔서 감사합니다!” 피코가 죽음을 무릅쓰고 맥카티와 다른 사람들의 석방을 위해 위험한 협상을 진행했었음을 알기에 그의 진심 어린 말에는 상당한 무게가 실려 있었습니다.

우리 믿는 자들도 이처럼 어렵게 얻은 자유에 공감할 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리 모두의 영적 자유를 위해 로마의 십자가에서 죽음의 고통을 참으시고 생명을 내어주셨습니다. 우리는 그분의 자녀로서, 바울 사도가 담대히 선포한 것처럼 “그리스도께서 우리를 자유롭게 하려고 자유를 주셨다” (갈라디아서 5:1)는 것을 알고 있습니다.

요한복음도 그리스도 안에서의 자유에 대해 가르쳐줍니다. “그러므로 아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라”(요한복음 8:36).

그러나 어떤 자유를 말하는 것일까요? 예수님 안에서 우리는 죄와 죄로 인한 억압뿐 아니라, 죄의식과 수치심, 근심, 사탄의 거짓말, 미신, 거짓 가르침, 영원한 죽음으로부터의 자유를 경험합니다. 우리는 더 이상 인질이 아니라, 원수를 사랑하고, 친절을 베풀고, 소망을 갖고 살며, 이웃을 사랑할 자유를 갖게 되었습니다. 성령님의 인도하심을 따를 때, 우리가 용서받은 것처럼 우리도 용서할 수 있습니다.

이 모든 것을 인하여 오늘 하나님께 감사를 드립시다. 그리고 다른 이들도 주님이 주시는 자유의 능력을 알게 되도록 서로 사랑합시다.

FREE AT LAST

Twenty long years passed before British journalist John McCarthy—a five-year hostage during Lebanon’s grueling civil war—met the man who negotiated his release. When McCarthy finally met U.N. envoy Giandomenico Picco, McCarthy simply said, “Thank you for my freedom!” His heartfelt words carried great weight because Picco had risked his own life during dangerous negotiations to secure freedom for McCarthy and others.

We as believers can relate to such hard-won freedom. Jesus gave up His life—enduring death on a Roman cross—to secure spiritual freedom for all people, including each of us. Now as His children, we know “it is for freedom that Christ has set us free,” the apostle Paul boldly declared (GALATIANS 5:1).

The gospel of John also teaches of freedom in Christ, noting, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (JOHN 8:36).

But free in what ways? In Jesus, we experience freedom not only from sin and its hold on us but also from guilt, shame, worry, Satan’s lies, superstitions, false teaching, and eternal death. No longer hostages, we have freedom to show love to enemies, walk in kindness, live with hope, and love our neighbors. As we follow the Holy Spirit’s leading, we can forgive as we’ve been forgiven.

For all of this, let’s thank God today. Then let’s love so others will know the power of His freedom too. PATRICIA RAYBON

내부의 문제

몇 년 전 딱따구리 한 마리가 우리 집 외벽을 두드리기 시작했습니다. 우리는 바깥에서 그러는 것으로 생각했습니다. 그런데 어느 날 아들과 함께 사다리를 타고 다락에 올라갔는데 눈앞에서 새가 날아가는 것을 보고 너무 놀랐습니다. 문제가 생각보다 더 심각했습니다. 바로 집 ‘안쪽’이 문제였던 것입니다.

예수님이 예루살렘에 도착하셨을 때 군중들은 주님이 그들의 외적 문제인 로마의 압제를 해결해주실 것으로 기대했습니다. 그들은 열광하며 큰 소리로 “호산나 다윗의 자손이여 찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이여 가장 높은 곳에서 호산나”(마태복음 21:9)라고 외쳤습니다. 드디어 그들이 기다리던 순간이 왔습니다. 하나님께서 약속하신 왕이 오신 것입니다. 하나님이 보내신 구원자가 개혁을 하신다면 먼저 모든 ‘외적인’ 문제부터 시작하려고 하지 않을까요? 하지만 대부분의 복음서에 쓰인 것을 보면, 예수님은 “승리의 입성”을 하신 후 바로 ‘성전’에서 착취를 일삼는 환전상을 쫓아내셨습니다(12-13절). 주님은 성전 안쪽부터 깨끗하게 하신 것입니다.

우리가 예수님을 왕으로 받아들일 때에도 바로 이런 일이 일어납니다. 모든 것을 바로잡으러 오신 예수님은 우리와 함께 그 일을 시작하셔서 우리로 우리 내면의 악을 대면하게 하십니다. 당나귀를 타신 예수님은 트로이의 목마 안에 있는 용사와 같습니다. 목마는 평화의 상징으로서 환영을 받았지만, 그것이 궁극적으로 목적했던 것은 무조건적인 항복이었습니다. 우리의 왕이신 예수님도 우리에게 동일한 것을 요구하십니다.

THE PROBLEM WITHIN

A few years ago, a woodpecker began tapping on the siding of our home. We thought the problem was only external. Then one day, my son and I climbed up a ladder into the attic only to have a bird fly past our startled faces. The problem was worse than we’d suspected: it was inside our house.

When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, the crowd was hoping He would be the one to fix their external problem—their oppression by the Romans. They went wild, shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” (MATTHEW 21:9). This was the moment they’d been waiting for; God’s appointed King had come. If God’s chosen Deliverer was going to begin reforming things, wouldn’t He start with all the wrong out there? But in most gospel accounts, the “triumphal entry” is followed by Jesus driving out exploitative moneychangers . . . from the temple (VV. 12–13). He was cleaning house, and from the inside out.

That’s what happens when we welcome Jesus as King; He comes to set things right—and He starts with us. He makes us confront the evil inside. Jesus on the donkey is like the warriors in the Trojan horse. The horse was welcomed as a symbol of peace, but its ultimate aim was unconditional surrender. Jesus our King requires the same from us. ‘에스라’라는 이름은 훌륭한 지도력에 필수적인 특징인 “조력자”라는 뜻입니다. 기도를 바탕으로 한 에스라의 지도력을 통해 그와 그의 제자들은 예루살렘의 영적 각성을 이끌 수 있었습니다(9-10장 참조). 그들에게 필요했던 것은 오직 작은 격려의 말과 지혜로운 방향 제시였습니다.

하나님의 교회가 일하는 방식도 이와 마찬가지입니다. 훌륭한 멘토가 우리를 격려하고 성장시켜주면, 우리도 배운 대로 다른 이들에게 그대로 할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 함으로 현 세대를 넘어 대대에 영향을 미치게 될 것입니다. 하나님을 위해 충실히 행한 일은 영원토록 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.

RIPPLE EFFECT

The little Bible college in northern Ghana didn’t look impressive—just a tin-roofed cinder-block building and a handful of students. Yet Bob Hayes poured his life into those students. He gave them leadership roles and encouraged them to preach and teach, despite their occasional reluctance. Bob passed away years ago, but dozens of thriving churches, schools, and two additional Bible institutes have sprung up across Ghana—all started by graduates of that humble school.

During the reign of King Artaxerxes (465–424 bc), Ezra the scribe assembled a band of Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem. But Ezra found no Levites among them (EZRA 8:15). He needed Levites to serve as priests. So he commissioned leaders to “bring attendants to us for the house of our God” (V. 17). They did so (VV. 18–20), and Ezra led them all in fasting and prayer (V. 21).

Ezra’s name means “helper,” a characteristic that resides at the heart of good leadership. Under Ezra’s prayerful guidance, he and his protégés would lead a spiritual awakening in Jerusalem (SEE CHAPTERS 9–10). All they had needed was a little encouragement and wise direction.

That’s how God’s church works too. As good mentors encourage and build us up, we learn to do the same for others. Such an influence will reach far beyond our lifetime. Work done faithfully for God stretches into eternity. TIM GUSTAFSON

하나님이 부르신 곳에서 헌신하기 위해 예술가의 직업을 버리고 예수님을 위한 섬김의 삶을 살았던 두 남자가 있습니다. 영국인 제임스 프레이져 (1886–1938)는 중국의 리수 종족을 섬기려고 피아노 연주자의 길을 중단했고, 미국인 저드슨 밴 디벤터(1855–1939)는 화가의 경력을 쌓는 대신 복음전도자의 길을 택했습니다. 그는 나중에 찬송가 “내게 있는 모든 것을”의 가사를 쓰기도 했습니다.

예술가라는 직업이 많은 사람들에게는 완벽한 직업이긴 하지만, 이 두 사람은 하나님께서 다른 일을 위해 자신의 직업을 포기하게 하셨다고 믿었습니다. 그들은 예수님이 젊은 부자 관원에게 주님을 따르려면 그의 소유를 다 버려야 한다고 하신 말씀에서 영감을 받았을지도 모릅니다 (마가복음 10:17–25). 예수님과 관원의 대화를 목격한 베드로가 말했습니다. “우리가 모든 것을 버리고 주를 따랐나이다”(28절). 예수님은 그에게 하나님은 그를 따르는 자들에게 “현세에 있어 백 배”를 주시며 또 영생을 주신다고 확신시켜주셨습니다(30절). 하지만 주님은 “먼저 된 자로서 나중 되고 나중 된 자로서 먼저 될 자가 많으니라”(31절)라는 지혜의 말씀도 함께 주셨습니다.

SURRENDERING ALL

Two men remembered for serving others for Jesus left careers in the arts to commit themselves to where they believed God had called them. James O. Fraser (1886–1938) decided not to pursue being a concert pianist in England to serve the Lisu people in China, while the American Judson Van DeVenter (1855–1939) chose to become an evangelist instead of pursuing a career in art. He later wrote the hymn “I Surrender All.”

While having a vocation in the arts is the perfect calling for many, these men believed God called them to relinquish one career for another. Perhaps they found inspiration from Jesus counseling the rich, young ruler to give up his possessions to follow Him (MARK 10:17–25). Witnessing the exchange, Peter exclaimed, “We have left everything to follow you!” (V. 28). Jesus assured him that God would give those who follow Him “a hundred times as much in this present age” and eternal life (V. 30). But He would give according to His wisdom: “Many who are first will be last, and the last first” (V. 31).

No matter where God has placed us, we’re called to daily surrender our lives to Christ, obeying His gentle call to follow Him and serve Him with our talents and resources—whether in the home, office, community, or far from home. As we do, He’ll inspire us to love others, putting their needs above our own. AMY BOUCHER PYE

THE DEEPEST PLACES

Victor Hugo (1802–1885), a poet and novelist during the social and political upheavals of nineteenth-century France, is perhaps best known for his classic Les Miserables. Over a century later, a musical adaptation of his novel has become one of our generation’s most popular productions. This shouldn’t surprise us. As Hugo once said, “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”

The psalmists would have agreed. Their songs and prayers provide us with honest reflections on life and its inevitable pain. They touch us in places we find difficult to access. For example, in Psalm 6:6 David cries out, “I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.”

The fact that such raw honesty is included in the inspired songs of the Scriptures gives us great encouragement. It invites us to bring our fears to God, who welcomes us into His presence for comfort and help. He embraces us in our heartfelt honesty.

Music can give us the ability to express our feelings when words are hard to come by, but whether that expression is sung, prayed, or silently cried, our God reaches into the deepest places in our hearts and gives us His peace. BILL CROWDER

알리기 위해 달려감

현대의 마라톤은 고대 그리스 시대의 전령인 페이디피데스의 이야기에서 비롯됩니다. 전설에 따르면 기원전 490년, 그리스가 강적 페르시아의 침략에 대항하여 승리한 것을 알리기 위해 페이디피데스는 마라톤에서 아테네까지 약 25마일(40킬로미터)을 달렸다고 합니다. 오늘날 사람들은 마라톤을 개인적 성취를 위한 운동 목적으로 하지만, 페이디피데스는 더 큰 목적을 위해 뛰었습니다. 그의 동족들에게 좋은 소식을 알리겠다는 기쁨 하나로 한 걸음씩 달린 것입니다!

약 500년 후, 두 여인 역시 기쁜 소식, 역사상 가장 중요한 소식을 전하기 위해 달렸습니다. 마리아와 막달라 마리아가 예수님이 십자가 못 박혀 돌아가신 후 안치된 무덤에 도착했을 때 무덤이 비어 있는 것을 발견했습니다. 그때 천사가 그들에게 예수님이 “죽은 자 가운데서 살아나셨으니 빨리 가서 그의 제자들에게 전하라”고 했습니다(마태복음 28:7). 그러자 여인들은 “무서움과 큰 기쁨으로” 제자들에게 그들이 본 것을 전하려고 달렸습니다(8절).

우리도 이같이 예수님의 부활을 기뻐하고 다른 이들과 이 기쁜 소식을 적극적으로 나눌 수 있기를 바랍니다. 굳이 멀리까지 “뛰지” 않아도, 바로 옆에 우리 구주에 대해 알아야 할 사람이 있을 수 있습니다. 주님이 죽음과의 전투에서 이기셨기 때문에 우리는 주님과 함께 영원히 승리하는 삶을 살 수 있습니다!

RUNNING TO TELL

The modern-day marathon is based on the story of a Greek messenger, Pheidippides. According to legend, in 490 bc he ran approximately twenty-five miles (forty kilometers) from Marathon to Athens to announce the Greeks’ victory against their formidable foe, the invading Persians. Today, people run marathons for the personal satisfaction of an athletic achievement, but Pheidippides had a greater purpose behind his effort: each of his steps was run for the sheer joy of delivering good news to his kinsmen!

Some five hundred years later, two women also ran to deliver good news—the most pivotal news in all of history. When Mary and Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb where Jesus had been placed after His crucifixion, they found it empty. An angel told them that Jesus had “risen from the dead” and to “go quickly and tell his disciples” (MATTHEW 28:7). The women, “afraid yet filled with joy,” ran to tell the disciples what they’d discovered (V. 8).

May we have the same joyful exuberance at the resurrection of Jesus, and may it invigorate us to share the good news with others. We may not even need to “run” farther than next door to find someone who needs to know about our Savior. He won the battle against death so we might live victoriously with Him forever! 서아프리카에 사는 한 영국인 부부는 같은 마을에 사는 한 남자와 여러 해 동안 돈독한 우정을 쌓으며 많은 시간 예수님의 사랑과 구원에 관해 대화를 나누었습니다. 하지만 그 남자는 예수님을 믿는 믿음이 “더 큰 진리”임을 알게 되었음에도 불구하고 평생 믿어왔던 자신의 신앙을 포기하지 못했습니다. 그는 종교지도자로서 사례를 받고 생활하고 있었기 때문에 어느 정도는 재정적인 염려 때문이기도 했고, 또한 지역 사회에서 평판을 잃을까 봐 두려워하기도 했습니다.

그는 슬픈 목소리로 말했습니다. “저는 냇가에서 손으로 물고기를 잡는 사람과 같아요. 한 손으로 작은 물고기를 잡았는데 옆에 큰 물고기가 헤엄쳐 가고 있어요. 큰 물고기를 잡으려면 저는 작은 물고기를 놓아주어야 해요!”

마태복음 19장에 나오는 젊은 부자 관원도 비슷한 문제가 있었습니다. 그는 예수님께 다가가 “내가 무슨 선한 일을 하여야 영생을 얻으리이까”(16절) 라고 물었습니다. 그는 진심 어려 보이기는 했지만 예수님께 자신의 삶을 모두 내어드리는 것은 원하지 않았습니다. 부자였을 뿐 아니라 율법을 잘 지키는 것에 대한 자부심도 아주 강했던 그는 영생을 원하긴 했지만 다른 것을 그보다 더 사랑하여 그리스도의 말씀을 거부했습니다.

예수님께 겸손히 우리의 삶을 드리고 값없이 주시는 구원의 선물을 받으면, 주님은 “와서 나를 따르라”(21절)고 우리를 초대하십니다.

SMALL FISH

Over several years, a British couple living in West Africa developed a strong friendship with a man in their town and many times shared the love of Jesus and the story of salvation with him. Their friend, however, was reluctant to relinquish the lifetime of allegiance he had to another religion, even though he came to recognize that faith in Christ was “the greater truth.” His concern was partly financial, since he was a leader in his faith and depended on the compensation he received. He also feared losing his reputation among the people in his community.

With sadness, he explained, “I’m like a man fishing with my hands in a stream. I have caught a small fish in one, but a bigger fish is swimming by. To catch the bigger fish, I have to let go of the smaller one!”

The rich young ruler Matthew wrote about in Matthew 19 had a similar problem. When he approached Jesus, he asked, “What good thing must I do to get eternal life?” (V. 16). He seemed sincere, but he didn’t want to fully surrender his life to Jesus. He was rich, not only in money, but also in his pride of being a rule-follower. Although he desired eternal life, he loved something else more and rejected Christ’s words.

When we humbly surrender our life to Jesus and accept His free gift of salvation, He invites us, “Come, follow me” (V. 21). CINDY HESS KASPER

하나님의 발자국

네 살짜리 손자가 내 아내 캐리에게 말했습니다. “난 하나님이 어디에 사는지 알아요.” 아내가 호기심에 가득 차서 “거기가 어디야?” 라고 묻자, 손자는 “하나님은 할머니 집 옆의 숲속에 살아요.”라고 대답했습니다.

캐리가 손자와 나눈 대화를 이야기하며 아이가 왜 그렇게 생각하는지 궁금해하자 내가 말했습니다. “나는 알지. 그 아이가 지난번에 여기 왔을 때 함께 숲속을 산책하면서, 우리가 하나님을 볼 수는 없지만 그분이 하신 일들을 볼 수 있다고 말해준 적이 있거든.” 그때 나는 손자와 강변의 모래밭을 지나 걸어가며 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 만들고 있는 발자국이 보이니? 동물과 나무들, 그리고 강은 하나님의 발자국과 같단다. 우린 그분이 만드신 것들을 볼 수 있기 때문에 그분이 여기에 계셨다는 걸 알 수 있지.”

시편 104편의 저자도 하나님의 창조 증거를 가리키며 이렇게 선포했습니다. “여호와여 주께서 하신 일이 어찌 그리 많은지요 주께서 지혜로 그들을 다 지으셨으니 주께서 지으신 것들이 땅에 가득하니이다”(24절). 여기에 사용된 지혜를 뜻하는 히브리어는 성경에서 숙련된 솜씨를 묘사할 때 자주 사용되는 말입니다. 하나님께서 창조하신 자연은 그분의 살아계심을 선포하고 있고, 그것을 보며 우리는 그분을 찬양하게 됩니다.

시편 104편은 “여호와를 송축하라”(1, 35절)는 말로 시작하고 끝을 맺습니다. 아기의 손에서 독수리의 눈에 이르기까지, 우리를 둘러싼 창조주의 예술품은 그분의 완벽한 솜씨를 보여줍니다. 오늘 이 모든 것을 경외하는 마음으로 바라보며 그분을 찬양할 수 있기를 바랍니다!

GOD’S FOOTPRINTS

“I know where God lives,” our four-year-old grandson told my wife, Cari. “Where is that?” she asked, her curiosity piqued. “He lives in the woods beside your house,” he answered.

When Cari told me about their conversation, she wondered what prompted his thinking. “I know,” I responded. “When we went for a walk in the woods during his last visit, I told him that even though we can’t see God, we can see the things He’s done.” “Do you see the footprints I’m making?” I had asked my grandson as we stepped through a sandy place by a river. “The animals and the trees and the river are like God’s footprints. We know that He’s been here because we can see the things He’s made.”

The writer of Psalm 104 also pointed to the evidence for God in creation, exclaiming “How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures” (V. 24). The Hebrew word for wisdom found here is often used in the Bible to describe skillful craftsmanship. God’s handiwork in nature proclaims His presence and makes us want to praise Him.

Psalm 104 begins and ends with the words: “Praise the Lord” (vv. 1, 35). From a baby’s hand to an eagle’s eye, our Creator’s artistry all around us speaks of His consummate skill. May we take it all in with wonder today—and praise Him for it! JAMES BANKS

깨어질 수 없는 믿음

다이앤 독고 김과 남편은 첫아들이 자폐 진단을 받은 후, 인식 장애가 있는 아이를 평생 돌봐야 할 상황을 맞아 매우 슬펐습니다. 다이앤은 그의 저서 ‘깨어지지 않는 믿음’에서 그들의 꿈과 기대를 사랑하는 아들의 미래에 맞추어야 하는 것이 무척 힘들었다고 고백합니다. 하지만 이 고통스러운 과정을 통해 하나님께서 그들의 분노와 의심, 그리고 두려움까지 돌보신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이제 그 아들은 성인이 되었고, 다이앤은 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 특수교육이 필요한 아이들의 부모들에게 용기를 북돋워주고 있습니다. 그녀는 그들에게 하나님의 굳건한 약속, 무한한 권능, 신실하신 사랑에 대해 이야기합니다. 그리고 인생의 꿈과 기대, 삶의 방식이나 시절을 잃어버려 슬퍼하는 것을 하나님께서 충분히 이해하신다고 사람들을 확신시켜 줍니다.

이사야서 26장에서 이사야는 “주 여호와는 영원한 반석”(4절)이시기에 하나님의 백성들이 주님을 영원토록 신뢰할 수 있다고 선포합니다. 우리가 어떤 상황에 처하더라도 그분은 초자연적인 평안으로 우리를 붙들어주십니다 (12절). 환난 중에도 변함없는 그분의 성품에 집중하고 그분께 부르짖으면 희망이 다시 샘솟게 됩니다(15절).

어떤 상실이나 실망, 혹은 힘든 상황을 맞을 때 하나님은 우리가 그분께 솔직하기를 원하십니다. 그분은 수시로 바뀌는 우리의 감정과 우리의 의문들을 해결해주실 수 있습니다. 그분은 우리와 함께하시며, 영원한 소망으로 우리의 영혼을 새롭게 하십니다. 삶이 무너지는 것처럼 느껴질 때에라도 하나님은 우리의 믿음을 굳건히 해주실 수 있습니다.

UNBREAKABLE FAITH

After doctors diagnosed their first-born son with autism, Diane Dokko Kim and her husband grieved facing a lifetime of caring for a cognitively disabled child. In her book Unbroken Faith, she admits to struggling with adjusting their dreams and expectations for their beloved son’s future. Yet through this painful process, they learned that God can handle their anger, doubts, and fears. Now, with their son reaching adulthood, Diane uses her experiences to encourage parents of children with special needs. She tells others about God’s unbreakable promises, limitless power, and loving faithfulness. She assures people that He gives us permission to grieve when we experience the death of a dream, an expectation, a way or a season of life.

In Isaiah 26, the prophet declares that God’s people can trust in the Lord forever, “for the Lord . . . is the Rock eternal” (V. 4). He’s able to sustain us with supernatural peace in every situation (V. 12). Focusing on His unchanging character and crying out to Him during troublesome times revitalizes our hope (V. 15).

When we face any loss, disappointment, or difficult circumstance, God invites us to be honest with Him. He can handle our ever-changing emotions and our questions. He remains with us and refreshes our spirits with enduring hope. Even when we feel like our lives are falling apart, God can make our faith unbreakable. XOCHITL DIXON

포용의 유산

글렌 커린은 그의 저서 ‘벽을 허물다’라는 책에서, 1968년 인권운동가 마틴 루터 킹 목사가 암살된 후 시카고의 대학 기숙사 건물 옥상에 올라간 일을 쓰고 있습니다. “커다란 건물들 사이로 여기저기 총성이 무섭게 울려 퍼졌고, 곧이어 나는 건물 옥상에서 끔찍한 장면을 거의 파노라마처럼 목격할 수 있었다...... 위스콘신의 옥수수밭에 있던 내가 어떻게 2년 만에 이곳 시카고 시내의 전쟁터로 오게 된 것일까?” 글렌은 2011년 세상을 떠날 때까지 시카고 서쪽에 살면서 예수님과 그와 배경이 다른 사람들을 향한 사랑으로 사람들에게 음식과 의복, 쉼터 등을 제공하는 사역을 이끌었습니다.

A LEGACY OF ACCEPTANCE

In his book Breaking Down Walls, Glen Kehrein writes about climbing to the roof of his college dorm in Chicago after the assassination of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. “The sound of gunfire bounced eerily back and forth off the large buildings, and soon my rooftop perch provided a near panoramic, yet horrific, view. . . . How in the world did I get from a Wisconsin cornfield to a war zone in the inner city of Chicago in less than two years?” Compelled by his love for Jesus and people whose backgrounds were different from his, Glen lived on Chicago’s West Side and led a ministry there that provided food, clothing, shelter, and other services until his death in 2011.

Glen’s life mirrors the efforts of believers in Jesus who’ve come to grips with the need to embrace those who are different from themselves. Paul’s teaching and example helped Roman believers see that God’s plan to rescue wayward humanity included Jews and gentiles (ROMANS 15:8–12). Believers are called to follow His example of acceptance of others (V. 7); prejudice and discord have no place among those called to glorify God with “one mind and one voice” (V. 6). Ask God to help you cross barriers and break down walls and to warmly embrace everyone, regardless of their differences. Let’s strive to leave behind a legacy of acceptance. ARTHUR JACKSON
