놀라우신 분

‘오즈의 마법사’ 이야기에서, 도로시, 허수아비, 양철 나무꾼, 그리고 겁쟁이 사자는 서쪽 나라의 사악한 마녀가 타고 다니던 빗자루를 타고오즈로 돌아옵니다. 마법사는 전에 도로시 일행에게 그 빗자루를 가져오면 그들이 가장 원하는 네 가지 소원, 곧 도로시에게는 집으로의 귀환을, 허수아비에게는 두뇌를, 양철 나무꾼에게는 심장을, 그리고 겁쟁이 사자에게는 용기를 주겠다고 이전에 약속했었습니다. 하지만 마법사는 핑계를 대며 다음날 다시 오라고 말합니다.

그들이 마법사에게 간청하는 동안 도로시의 개 토토가 마법사를 가리고 있던 커튼을 물어 당기자 그가 실제로 마법사가 아니라는 것이 드러납니다. 단지 네브라스카 출신의 겁 많고 안절부절못하는 남자일 뿐이었습니다.

저자인 L. 프랭크 바움은 하나님과의 관계에 심각한 문제가 있었으며, 그래서 오직 우리 자신만이 우리의 문제를 해결할 수 있다는 메시지를 전하고 싶어 했다고 알려져 있습니다.

THE WONDERFUL ONE

In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion return to Oz with the broomstick that empowered the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wizard had promised, in return for the broomstick, that he would give the four their deepest desires: a ride home for Dorothy, a brain for the Scarecrow, a heart for the Tin Man, and courage for the Cowardly Lion. But the Wizard stalls and tells them to come back the next day.

While they plead with the Wizard, Dorothy’s dog Toto pulls back the curtain, behind which the Wizard spoke, to reveal that the Wizard isn’t a wizard at all, He’s just a fearful, fidgety man from Nebraska.

It’s said that the author, L. Frank Baum, had a serious problem with God, so he wanted to send the message that only we have the power to solve our problems.

In contrast, the apostle John pulls back the veil to reveal the truly Wonderful One behind the “curtain.” Words fail John (note the repeated use of the preposition like in the passage), but the point is well made: God is seated on His throne, surrounded by a sea of glass (REVELATION 4:2, 6). Despite the troubles that plague us here on earth (CHS. 2–3), God isn’t pacing the floor and biting His nails. He’s actively at work for our good, so we can experience His peace. DAVID H. ROPER

23주 만에 “초미숙아”로 태어난 갓난아기 세이비는 체중이 8.6온스 (244그램)밖에 되지 않았습니다. 아기가 얼마 살지 못하리라 생각한 의료진은 아이의 부모에게 딸과 함께할 시간이 한 시간 밖에 없을 것 같다고 말했습니다. 하지만 세이비는 계속 싸우며 견뎌냈습니다. 아이의 침대 옆에 붙어 있는 분홍색 카드에는 “아주 작지만 강한 아이”라는 문구가 쓰여 있었습니다. 병원에서 5개월을 보낸 세이비는 기적같이 5파운드(약 2.3 킬로그램)의 건강한 아이의 모습으로 집으로 갔습니다. 그리고 세계에서 가장 작게 태어나 생존한 아기로 기록되었습니다.

역경을 이겨낸 사람들의 이야기를 들으면 힘이 납니다. 성경에도 그런 이야기가 있습니다. 목동이었던 다윗은 자처해서 하나님을 모독하고 이스라엘을 위협한 거인 용사 골리앗과 맞섰습니다. 사울 왕은 다윗이 터무니없다고 생각했습니다. “네가 가서 저 블레셋 사람과 싸울 수 없으리니 너는 소년이요 그는 어려서부터 용사임이니라”(사무엘상 17:33). 소년 다윗이 전장에 들어서자 골리앗은 “다윗을 보고 나서, 그가 다만......소년에 지나지 않는다는 것을 알았습니다”(42절, 새번역). 그러나 다윗은 홀로 전투에 나서지 않았습니다. 그는 “만군의 여호와의 이름, 곧 이스라엘 군대의 하나님의 이름으로”(45절) 나아갔습니다. 날이 저물었을 때, 전투에서 승리한 다윗은 죽은 골리앗 위에 우뚝 서 있었습니다.

하나님께서 우리와 함께 하시면 아무리 큰 문제라도 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 그분의 능력이 함께 할 때 우리 또한 강하기 때문입니다.

MIGHTY

Baby Saybie, born as a “micro-preemie” at 23 weeks, weighed only 8.6 ounces. Doctors doubted Saybie would live and told her parents they’d likely have only an hour with their daughter. However, Saybie kept fighting. A pink card near her crib declared “Tiny but Mighty.” After five months in the hospital, Saybie miraculously went home as a healthy five-pound baby. And she took a world record with her: the world’s tiniest surviving baby.

It’s powerful to hear stories of those who beat the odds. The Bible tells one of these stories. David, a shepherd boy, volunteered to fight Goliath—a mammoth warrior who defamed God and threatened Israel. King Saul thought David was ridiculous: “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth” (1 SAMUEL 17:33). And when the boy David stepped onto the battlefield, Goliath “looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy” (V. 42). However, David didn’t step into battle alone. He came “in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel” (V. 45). And when the day was done, a victorious David stood above a dead Goliath.

No matter how enormous the problem, when God is with us there’s nothing that we need to fear. With His strength, we’re also mighty. WINN COLLIER

여러 길?

“아빠, 고속도로를 타지 마세요!” 어느 날 퇴근길에 딸이 메시지를 보내왔습니다. 집으로 가는 고속도로는 거의 주차장처럼 되어 있었습니다. 다른 길을 시도해 보았지만 다른 길들도 완전히 정체되어 있는 것을 보고는 포기해 버렸습니다. 집으로 돌아가기 위해서는 늦게까지 기다려야 할 것 같아 차를 반대 방향으로 돌려 손녀가 참가하는 체육 행사장으로 향했습니다.

그 어떤 길로도 집으로 갈 수 없다는 것을 알게 되었을 때, 모든 길이 하나님과의 영원한 관계로 이어진다고 말하는 사람들에 대해 생각하게 되었습니다. 어떤 사람들은 친절과 선한 행실을 통해 하나님께 갈 수 있다고 믿습니다. 또 어떤 사람들은 종교적인 선행의 길을 선택합니다.

그러나 이런 길에 의존하면 막다른 길로 가고 맙니다. 영원하신 하나님께 나아가는 길은 오직 한 길뿐입니다. 예수님은 분명하게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요한복음 14:6). 예수님은 자신의 죽음을 통해 우리가 아버지 집, 곧 주님이 계시고 그분이 주시는 현재와 영원을 위한 실제적인 삶이 있는 그곳으로 갈 수 있다고 말씀하신 것입니다.

하나님 앞으로 이끌지 못하는 막힌 고속도로를 타지 마십시오. 대신 “아들을 믿는 자에게는 영생이 있다”(요한복음 3:36)고 말씀하신 예수님을 구주로 믿으십시오. 그리고 이미 그분을 믿으신다면 그분이 마련해주신 길에 계속 머무르십시오.

ALL ROADS?

“Don’t get on the expressway!” That text came from my daughter one day as I was leaving work. The highway home had become a virtual parking lot. I began trying alternate routes, but after experiencing gridlock on other roads, I gave up. The trip home would have to wait till later in the day, so I drove in the opposite direction to an athletic event my granddaughter was involved in.

Discovering that no roads would lead me home made me think about people who say that all roads lead to an eternal relationship with God. Some believe the road of kindness and good behavior will get you there. Others choose the road of doing religious things.

Relying on those roads, however, leads to a dead end. There’s only one road to take to God’s eternal presence. Jesus clarified this when He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (JOHN 14:6). He was revealing that He was going to die to open the way for us to enter His Father’s house—to His presence and the real life He provides for today and eternity.

Skip the blocked highways that don’t lead to God’s presence. Instead, trust Jesus as Savior, for “whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (3:36). And for those who already believe in Him, rest in the way He’s provided. DAVE BRANON

자비로운 하나님

어느 추운 겨울밤에 누군가가 유대인 아이의 침실 창문으로 큰 돌을 던졌습니다. 그 창문에는 유대인의 빛 축제인 하누카를 기념하기 위해 큰 촛대 메노라와 함께 다윗의 별이 장식되어 있었습니다. 아이가 사는 몬태나 주 빌링스의 수천 명의 주민들 중 다수가 예수님을 믿는 사람들이었는데, 그 증오에 찬 행위에 연민의 마음으로 반응했습니다. 주민들은 유대인 이웃들의 상처와 두려움을 함께 나누기 위해 자신들의 집 창문에도 메노라 그림을 붙였습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리 역시 큰 자비를 받고 있습니다. 우리 구주는 우리 가운데 거하시기 위해(요한복음 1:14) 자신을 낮추시고 우리와 같이 되셨습니다. 우리를 대신하여 주님은 “하나님의 본체시나......오히려 자기를 비워 종의 형체를 가지셨습니다”(빌립보서 2:6-7). 우리가 느끼는 것처럼 느끼고, 우리가 우는 것처럼 우신 주님은 우리를 구원하기 위해 십자가에서 죽으심으로 자신의 생명을 내어주셨습니다.

우리가 겪는 어떤 어려움도 우리 구주의 관심 밖에 있지 않습니다. 누군가가 우리의 삶에 “돌을 던지면” 주님이 우리를 위로해 주십니다. 살면서 절망하게 될 때, 주님이 우리와 함께 걸으며 절망을 이겨내게 하십니다. “여호와께서는 높이 계셔도 낮은 자를 굽어살피시며 멀리서도 교만한 자를 아심이니이다” (시편 138:6). 우리의 어려움 속에서 주님은“[우리] 원수들의 분노”(7절)와 우리 자신의 가장 깊은 두려움을 향해 손을 뻗어 우리를 보호해주십니다. 우리의 자비로운 사랑의 하나님, 감사합니다.

OUR COMPASSIONATE GOD

The winter night was cold when someone threw a large stone through a Jewish child’s bedroom window. A star of David had been displayed in the window, along with a menorah to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. In the child’s town of Billings, Montana, thousands of people—many of them believers in Jesus—responded to the hateful act with compassion. Choosing to identify with the hurt and fear of their Jewish neighbors, they pasted pictures of menorahs in their own windows.

As believers in Jesus, we too receive great compassion. Our Savior humbled Himself to live among us (JOHN 1:14), identifying with us. On our behalf, He, “being in very nature God . . . made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (PHILIPPIANS 2:6–7). Then, feeling as we feel and weeping as we weep, He died on a cross, sacrificing His life to save ours.

Nothing we struggle with is beyond our Savior’s concern. If someone “throws rocks” at our lives, He comforts us. If life brings disappointments, He walks with us through despair. “Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar” (PSALM 138:6). In our troubles, He preserves us, stretching out His hand against both “the anger of [our] foes” (V. 7) and our own deepest fears. Thank You, God, for Your compassionate love. PATRICIA RAYBON

당신의 노래는 무엇입니까?

대부분의 미국인들은 린 매뉴엘 미란다가 그의 유명한 뮤지컬 ‘해밀턴’ 을 썼던 2015년까지 알렉산더 해밀턴에 대해 거의 알지 못했습니다. 지금은 학생들도 그에 대한 이야기를 암기할 정도로 잘 알고 있습니다. 그들은 버스 안에서나 쉬는 시간에 그의 노래를 함께 부릅니다. 오늘날 해밀턴은 학생들이 매우 좋아하는 미국 건국의 아버지입니다.

노래는 거의 잊혀지지 않으므로 어떤 노래를 부를 것인지 신중하게 선택하는 것이 현명합니다. 단지 재미를 위한 노래도 괜찮기는 하지만, 예수님을 자랑하며 우리 믿음을 격려하는 노래가 유익합니다. “세월을 아끼는” 한 가지 방법은 “시와 찬송과 신령한 노래들로 서로” 화답하는 것입니다. 그러므로 “마음으로 주께 노래하며 찬송하십시오”(에베소서 5:15-19 참조).

WHAT’S YOUR SONG?

Most Americans knew little about Alexander Hamilton—until 2015, when Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote his hit musical Hamilton. Now schoolchildren know Hamilton’s story by heart. They sing it to each other on the bus and at recess. He’s their favorite founding father.

God knows the power of music, and He told Moses to “write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it” (DEUTERONOMY 31:19). God knew that long after Moses was gone, when He had brought Israel into the Promised Land, they would rebel and worship other gods. So He told Moses, “This song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants” (V. 21).

Songs are nearly impossible to forget, so it’s wise to be selective about what we sing. Some songs are just for fun, and that’s fine, but we benefit from songs that boast in Jesus and encourage our faith. One of the ways we “[make] the most of every opportunity” is when we speak “to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.” So “sing and make music from your heart to the Lord” (SEE EPHESIANS 5:15–19).

Songs can be an indicator of the direction of our heart. Do the words make much of Jesus? Do we sing them wholeheartedly? What we sing will influence what we believe, so choose wisely and sing loudly. MIKE WITTMER

굴레에서 벗어나기

데이빗은 일곱 번째 생일에 실수로 창문을 깬 후, 아버지에게 처음으로 매를 맞았습니다. “아버지는 나를 발로 차고 주먹으로 때리고, 그러고 나서 용서를 빌었습니다. 아버지는 폭력적인 알코올 중독자였는데, 그것이 나에게 이어졌지만 그것을 끊어내기 위해 지금 나는 최선을 다하고 있습니다.”

데이빗이 이렇게 결심하기까지는 오랜 시간이 걸렸습니다. 그는 십대와 이십대 대부분을 감옥이나 보호관찰, 그리고 중독치료 센터에 드나들며 보냈습니다. 자신의 꿈이 완전히 물거품이 된 것 같이 느껴졌을 때, 그는 기독교 치료센터에서 예수님을 만나면서 희망을 찾게 되었습니다.

데이빗은 말합니다. “나에게는 절망밖에 없었습니다. 이제 나는 새로운 방향으로 나아가려고 애쓰고 있습니다. 아침에 일어나면 제일 먼저 하나님께 나의 의지를 내려놓는다고 말씀드립니다.”

우리가 다른 사람들의 잘못 때문이든 우리 자신의 잘못 때문이든 삶이 산산조각 난 채로 하나님께 나아올 때, 그분은 우리의 상한 마음을 받으시고 우리를 새롭게 해주십니다. “누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고린도후서 5:17). 그리스도의 사랑과 생명이 우리의 과거의 악습을 깨뜨리고 우리에게 새로운 미래를 주십니다(14-15절). 그것이 전부가 아닙니다! 우리는 매 순간 하나님이 우리를 위해 하신 일과 지금도 우리 안에서 하고 계시는 일을 통해 소망과 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다.

BREAKING THE CYCLE

David’s first beating came at the hands of his father on his seventh birthday, after he accidentally broke a window. “He kicked me and punched me,” David said. “Afterward, he apologized. He was an abusive alcoholic, and it’s a cycle I’m doing my best to end now.”

But it took a long time for David to get to this point. Most of his teen years and twenties were spent in jail or on probation, and in and out of addiction treatment centers. When it felt like his dreams were entirely dashed, he found hope in a Christcentered treatment center through a relationship with Jesus.

“I used to be filled with nothing but despair,” David says. “Now I’m pushing myself in the other direction. When I get up in the morning, the first thing I tell God is that I’m surrendering my will over to Him.”

When we come to God with lives shattered, whether by others’ wrongdoing or by our own, God takes our broken hearts and makes us new: “If anyone is in Christ, . . . the old has gone, the new is here!” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17). Christ’s love and life breaks into the cycles of our past, giving us a new future (VV. 14–15). And it doesn’t end there! Throughout our lives, we can find hope and strength in what God has done and continues to do in us—each and every moment. ALYSON KIEDA

낮게 드리운 구름이 시야를 가려서 몇 백 야드 밖에는 앞이 보이질 않았습니다. 그렇게 시간이 흐르는 동안 내 기분도 영향을 받았습니다. 그러나 오후가 되자, 구름이 흩어지고 내가 사는 도시의 최고 명물인 아름다운 파이크스 피크 봉우리와 함께 그 양옆으로 산맥이 펼쳐져 있는 것이 보였습니다. 내 얼굴에도 어느덧 웃음이 피어올랐습니다. 나는 우리 육신의 시야도 영적인 시각에 영향을 줄 수 있다고 생각했습니다. 그리고 시편 기자가 “내가 산을 향하여 눈을 들리라”(시편 121:1) 라고 노래한 것이 떠올랐습니다. 때때로 우리는 단순히 눈을 조금 더 높이 들 필요가 있습니다!

LIFT UP YOUR EYES

The clouds hung low, blocking the horizon and limiting visibility to only a few hundred yards. The minutes dragged on. The effect on my mood was noticeable. But then, as afternoon approached, the clouds began to break, and I saw it: beautiful Pikes Peak, the most recognizable landmark of my city, flanked on each side by the mountain range. A smile broke over my face. I considered that even our physical perspective—our literal line of sight—can affect our spiritual vision. And I was reminded of the psalmist singing, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains” (PSALM 121:1). Sometimes we simply need to lift our eyes a bit higher!

The psalmist pondered where his help came from, maybe because the hilltops around Israel were dotted with altars to pagan gods and often contained robbers. Or it could have been because the psalmist looked up beyond the hills to Mount Zion where the temple stood and remembered that the Maker of heaven and earth was his covenant God (V. 2). Either way, to worship we must look up. We have to lift our eyes higher than our circumstances, higher than our troubles and trials, higher than the empty promises of the false gods of our day. Then we can see the Creator and Redeemer, the One who calls us by name. He’s the one who will “watch over your coming and going” today and forevermore (V. 8). GLENN PACKIAM

종이 왕관

어느 명절날 집에서 식사를 마친 후, 모두 사탕과 조그만 장난감과 반짝이 종이로 가득 찬 파티 기념품들을 풀어보았습니다. 그 기념품들 안에는 각 사람을 위한 종이 왕관이 하나씩 추가로 더 들어 있었습니다. 우리는 안 써 볼 수가 없어서 식탁에 둘러앉아 왕관을 쓰고 서로를 쳐다보며 웃었습니다. 비록 우리의 왕국은 먹다 남은 저녁식사로 어질러진 식당이었지만, 그래도 잠시나마 우리는 왕과 왕비가 되었습니다.

이 일은 내가 별로 생각해 보지 않았던 성경의 약속을 갑자기 기억나게 해주었습니다. 천국에서 모든 성도들은 예수님과 함께 다스리는 권세를 가지게 될 것입니다. 바울은 고린도전서 6장에서 이것을 언급하며 “성도가 세상을 판단할 것을 너희가 알지 못하느냐”(2절) 라고 질문합니다. 바울은 믿는 자들이 이 땅에서 분쟁을 평화롭게 해결하도록 격려하기 위해 이 미래의 특권을 언급한 것입니다. 그들은 서로를 고소하고 있었고, 그 결과로 그들이 속한 공동체 안에 있는 다른 신자들의 명예를 훼손하고 있었습니다.

성령님이 우리 안에 절제와 온유와 인내의 열매를 맺으실 때 우리는 분쟁을 더 잘 해결할 수 있습니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 다시 오셔서 우리 삶 속의 성령님의 사역을 완성하실 때까지(요한1서 3:2-3) 우리는 “우리 하나님 앞에서 나라와 제사장으로......땅에서 왕 노릇 할”(요한계시록 5:10) 우리의 궁극적인 역할을 준비하게 될 것입니다. 금관에 박힌 다이아몬드처럼 성경말씀 안에 반짝이는 이 약속을 꼭 붙잡으시기를 바랍니다.

PAPER CROWNS

After a holiday meal at my house, everyone opened party favors filled with candy, small toys, and confetti. But there was something else in the favors—a paper crown for each of us. We couldn’t resist trying them on, and we smiled at each other as we sat around the table. For just a moment, we were kings and queens, even if our kingdom was a dining room littered with the remnants of our dinner.

This sparked a memory of a Bible promise I don’t often think about. In the next life, all believers will share ruling authority with Jesus. Paul mentions this in 1 Corinthians 6 where he asks, “Do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world?” (V. 2). Paul referenced this future privilege because he wanted to inspire believers to settle disputes peacefully on earth. They had been suing each other and consequently harming the reputation of other believers in their community.

We become better at resolving conflict as the Holy Spirit produces self-control, gentleness, and patience within us. By the time Jesus returns and completes the Spirit’s work in our lives (1 JOHN 3:2–3), we’ll be ready for our eventual role as “a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and . . . reign on the earth” (REVELATION 5:10). Let’s hold on to this promise that glitters in Scripture like a diamond set in a crown of gold. JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

쓴 뿌리를 파내라

레베카는 오빠와 올케의 결혼 생활에 문제가 생기기 시작했을 때 진심으로 그들의 화해를 위해 기도했습니다. 하지만 그들은 결국 헤어졌습니다. 그 후 올케는 아이들을 데리고 타주로 이사를 갔고, 아이들의 아버지도 그것에 반대하지 않았습니다. 레베카는 몹시 사랑하는 조카들을 다시 보지 못했습니다. 몇 년 후 그녀는 이렇게 말했습니다. “슬픔을 혼자서 이기려고 애쓰니까 마음속에 쓴 뿌리가 자라기 시작했고, 그것이 가족과 친구들에게까지 퍼지기 시작했어요.”

룻기에는 마음이 슬퍼 힘들어 하다가 쓴 뿌리가 자라게 된 나오미라는 여인의 이야기가 나옵니다. 남편이 외국 땅에서 죽고, 십 년 후에는 두 아들도 모두 죽었습니다. 그녀는 며느리 룻과 오르바와 함께 빈곤에 처하게 되었습니다 (1:3-5). 나오미와 룻이 나오미의 고향으로 돌아오자 온 성읍이 떠들썩하게 맞이했습니다. 하지만 나오미는 친구들에게 “전능자가 나를 심히 괴롭게 하셨고...... 여호와께서 나를 징벌하셨다”(20-21절)고 말했습니다. 그리고 심지어 자신을 ‘쓰다’는 뜻의 “마라”라고 부르라고 했습니다.

실망스러워서 씁쓸한 마음을 느껴보지 않은 사람이 누가 있을까요? 누군가가 우리의 마음을 상하게 하는 말을 하고, 기대한 것은 이루어지지 않으며, 다른 사람이 까다롭게 굴어 몹시 화가 납니다. 우리의 마음 깊은 곳에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 우리 자신과 하나님 앞에서 시인할 때, 우리의 다정한 정원사이신 하나님은 아직 작은 것이든 몇 년 자란 것이든 우리의 쓴 뿌리를 파낼 수 있도록 도와주십니다. 그리고 그것을 사랑스럽고 즐거운 마음으로 교체해 주십니다.

DIG IT UP

When Rebecca’s brother and sister-in-law started having marriage problems, Rebecca prayed earnestly for their reconciliation. But they divorced. Then her sister-in-law took the children out of state and their dad didn’t protest. Rebecca never again saw the nieces she dearly loved. Years later she said, “Because of trying to handle this sadness on my own, I let a root of bitterness start in my heart, and it began to spread to my family and friends.”

The book of Ruth tells about a woman named Naomi who struggled with a heart of grief that grew into bitterness. Her husband died in a foreign land, and ten years later both her sons died. She was left destitute with her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah (1:3–5). When Naomi and Ruth returned to Naomi’s home country, the whole town was excited to see them. But Naomi told her friends: “The Almighty has made my life very bitter. . . . The Lord has afflicted me” (VV. 20–21). She even asked them to call her “Mara,” meaning bitter.

Who hasn’t faced disappointment and been tempted toward bitterness? Someone says something hurtful, an expectation isn’t met, or demands from others make us resentful. When we acknowledge to ourselves and God what’s happening deep in our hearts, our tender Gardener can help us dig up any roots of bitterness—whether they’re still small or have been growing for years—and can replace them with a sweet, joyful spirit. 별볼일 없는 자들의 하나님

“때로는 저 자신이 별볼일 없는 것처럼 느껴집니다. 그러나 하나님께서 그런 저도 사용하시기를 원합니다.”

우리가 대화를 시작했을 때 앤은 내가 방문했던 호텔의 운동실을 정리하고 있었습니다. 대화를 하면서 나는 그녀에게 놀라운 간증이 있음을 알게 되었습니다.

그녀는 고백했습니다. “예전에 저는 마약중독자였으며 길거리에서 생활하던 매춘부였습니다. 그러나 저는 하나님께서 마약을 내려놓고 주님과 동행하기를 원하신다는 것을 알았습니다. 몇 년 전 어느 날 저는 예수님의 발 앞에 무릎을 꿇었고, 주님은 저를 자유롭게 해주셨습니다.”

나는 하나님께서 그녀에게 행하신 일과, 그녀가 미미한 존재가 아니라는 확신을 주신 일을 함께 나누어주어서 앤에게 감사했습니다. 주님은 우리 대화에 그녀를 사용하셔서 삶을 변화시키는 주님의 능력을 아름답게 상기시켜 주셨습니다.

하나님은 사람들이 미처 보지 않고 지나칠 수 있는 이들을 곧잘 사용하십니다. 안드레 사도는 그의 형제 베드로만큼 잘 알려지지 않았지만, 성경은 “그가 먼저 자기의 형제 시몬[베드로]을 찾아 말하되 우리가 메시아를 만났다 하고......데리고 예수께로 오니”(요한복음 1:41-42)라고 기록하고 있습니다.

베드로는 안드레를 통해 예수님을 만났습니다. 세례 요한의 제자 중 한 사람이었던 안드레는 세례 요한으로부터 예수님에 관해 알게 되자 예수님을 따르고 믿었으며, 즉시 그의 형제에게 말했습니다. 안드레의 드러나지 않은 신실함은 세상을 뒤흔드는 영향을 미쳤습니다.

GOD OF THE INVISIBLE

“Sometimes I feel as if I’m invisible. But I so want God to use me.”

Ann was tidying up the exercise room at the hotel I was visiting when we struck up a conversation. As we talked, I discovered she had an amazing story.

“I used to be a crack addict and prostitute living on the streets,” she said. “But I knew God wanted me to put down my pipe and walk with Him. One day years ago I knelt at Jesus’ feet, and He set me free.”

I thanked Ann for sharing what God had done for her and assured her she wasn’t invisible—He had used her in our conversation in a beautiful way to remind me of His power to transform lives.

God loves to use people others might overlook. The apostle Andrew isn’t as well known as his brother Peter, but the Bible recounts that “the first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon [Peter] and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’. . . . And he brought him to Jesus” (JOHN 1:41–42).

Peter met Jesus through Andrew. When Andrew, one of John the Baptist’s disciples, learned about Jesus from John, he followed Jesus and believed—and immediately told his brother. Andrew’s quiet faithfulness had an impact that would shake the world.

God values faithful service over fame. He can use us powerfully wherever we are—even when no one is looking. JAMES BANKS
