나팔을 불라

“탭스”라는 트럼펫 곡은 미군에서 하루가 끝날 무렵이나 장례식에서 연주되는 곡입니다. 나는 그 곡의 비공식적인 가사를 읽고, 많은 절이 “하나님이 가까이 계신다”는 구절로 끝나는 것을 발견하고 놀랐습니다. 매일 밤 어두워지기 전이나, 사랑하는 사람의 죽음을 애도하는 동안에 그 가사는 군인들에게 하나님이 가까이 계신다는 아름다운 확신을 줍니다.

구약에서도 나팔소리는 이스라엘 사람들에게 하나님이 가까이 계시다는 것을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 하나님과 이스라엘 민족이 맺은 언약의 일부인 향연과 축제를 기념하는 가운데 유대인들은 “나팔을 불어야”(민수기 10:10) 했습니다. 나팔을 부는 것은 하나님이 함께하신다는 것뿐 아니라, 그들에게 하나님이 가장 필요할 때 나타나시고 그들을 돕기를 간절히 원하신다는 사실을 상기시켜 주었습니다.

오늘날 우리에게도 하나님이 가까이 계시다는 사실을 상기시켜주는 것들이 필요합니다. 그리고 우리도 각자 자신의 예배 방식으로 기도하고 찬양하면서 하나님께 부르짖을 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 우리의 기도가 하나님께 도움을 청하는 나팔 소리라고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님이 언제나 그 소리를 들으신다는 것이 아름다운 위로가 됩니다(베드로전서 3:12). 우리 각자의 간구에 하나님은 우리와 함께 하심으로써 삶의 어려움과 슬픔 속에 빠진 우리를 강하게 하시고 위로해 주신다는 확신으로 응답해주십니다.

SOUND THE TRUMPETS

“Taps” is a trumpet call played by the US military at the end of the day as well as at funerals. I was amazed when I read the unofficial lyrics and discovered that many of the verses end with the phrase “God is nigh” (God is near). Whether before the dark of each night settles in or while mourning the loss of a loved one, the lyrics offer soldiers the beautiful assurance that God is near.

In the Old Testament, trumpets were also a reminder to the Israelites that God was near. In the middle of celebrating the feasts and festivals that were part of the covenant agreement between God and the nation of Israel, the Jews were to “sound the trumpets” (NUMBERS 10:10). Blowing a trumpet was a reminder not only of God’s presence but also that He was available when they needed Him most—and He longed to help them.

Today, we still need reminders that God is near. And in our own style of worship, we too can call out to God in prayer and song. Perhaps our prayers can be thought of as trumpets asking God to help us. And the beautiful encouragement is that God always hears those calls (1 PETER 3:12). To each of our pleas, He responds with the assurance of His presence that strengthens and comforts us in the difficulties and sorrows of life. LISA M. SAMRA

사랑의 깊이

이제 갓 수영을 배운 세 살 난 딜런 맥코이가 할아버지 집 뒷마당에서 벽이 돌로 된 40피트(약 12미터) 깊이의 우물을 덮고 있던 썩은 나무판자 위에 올라갔다가 우물 속으로 떨어졌습니다. 딜런은 그의 아버지가 내려가 꺼내줄 때까지 10피트(약 3미터) 깊이의 우물물에 간신히 떠있었습니다. 구조대원들이 아이를 꺼내려고 밧줄을 가져와 보니, 아버지는 아들이 너무 걱정이 되어 미끄러운 돌을 타고 우물 아래로 벌써 내려가 있었습니다.

오, 부모의 사랑! 자녀들을 위한 사랑이 얼마나 넓고 깊은지!

성도들에게 그릇된 가르침이 범람할 때, 요한 사도는 믿음의 뿌리를 내리려고 애쓰고 있는 초대교회 신자들에게 구명조끼와 같은 말씀을 이렇게 전해주고 있습니다. “보라 아버지께서 어떠한 사랑을 우리에게 베푸사 하나님의 자녀라 일컬음을 받게 하셨는가, 우리가 그러하도다”(요한1서 3:1). 예수님을 믿는 자들을 하나님의 “자녀”라고 부르는 것은 주님을 신뢰하는 모든 사람들에게 친밀하고 합법적인 정당성을 부여해주는 것이었습니다.

오, 그분의 자녀를 사랑하시는 하나님의 사랑이 얼마나 넓고 깊은지!

자녀를 위해 오직 부모만이 할 수 있는 일들이 있습니다. 바로 아들을 구하러 우물 밑으로 내려간 딜런의 아버지처럼 말입니다. 그리고 우리를 주님의 마음 가까이로 모으시고 주님과 함께하는 삶으로 회복시키려고 그분의 독생자를 보내주신 우리 하나님 아버지의 행동처럼 말입니다(5-6절).

DEPTHS OF LOVE

Three-year-old Dylan McCoy had just learned to swim when he fell through a rotted plywood covering into a forty-foot deep, stone-walled well in his grandfather’s backyard. Dylan managed to stay afloat in ten feet of water until his father went down to rescue him. Firefighters brought ropes to raise the boy, but the father was so worried about his son that he’d already climbed down the slippery rocks to make sure he was safe.

Oh, the love of a parent! Oh, the lengths (and depths) we will go for our children!

When the apostle John writes to believers in the early church who were struggling to find footing for their faith as false teaching swirled about them, he extends these words like a life-preserver: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 JOHN 3:1). Naming believers in Jesus as “children” of God was an intimate and legal labeling that brought validity to all who trust in Him.

Oh, the lengths and depths God will go for His children!

There are actions a parent will take only for their child—like Dylan’s dad descending into a well to save his son. And like the ultimate act of our heavenly Father, who sent His only Son to gather us close to His heart and restore us to life with Him (VV. 5–6). ELISA MORGAN

익어가는 과정

영국 캐임브리지에서 50년간 목회한 찰스 시므온 목사(1759-1836)는 목회 초기에 이웃 교회 목사인 헨리 벤과 그의 딸들을 만났습니다. 벤 목사의 딸들은 그를 만나고 나서 그 젊은 목사가 아주 냉엄하고 자기 주장이 강해 보인다고 말했습니다. 그러자 벤 목사는 딸들에게 나무에서 복숭아를 따오라고 하였습니다. 아버지가 왜 익지 않은 과일을 따오라고 하는지 궁금해하자 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “얘들아, 과일이 아직 녹색이니 익으려면 좀더 기다려야 겠지. 하지만 조금 더 햇볕을 쬐고 비를 조금 더 맞으면 복숭아는 익어서 달콤해질 거야. 시므온 목사도 마찬가지란다.”

해가 가면서 시므온 목사는 하나님의 은혜로 부드러운 성품으로 변화 되었습니다. 그렇게 변화하게 된 이유 중의 하나는 매일 성경읽기와 기도에 전념한 때문이었습니다. 몇 달을 그와 함께 지낸 한 친구는 그가 이것을 실천 하는 것을 보고 이렇게 말했습니다. “바로 이것이 그의 큰 은혜와 영적 능력의 비결이었습니다.”

매일 하나님과 동행한 시므온 목사는 하나님의 말씀을 신실하게 들었던 예레미야 선지자의 실천을 그대로 따라 한 것입니다. 말씀에 전심으로 의존했던 예레미야는 “내가 주의 말씀을 얻어 먹었사오니”라고까지 고백했습니다. 그가 말씀을 숙고하고 되새기자 그 말씀들이 그의 “기쁨”이자 “마음의 즐거움”이 되었습니다(예레미야 15:16).

우리 역시 시고 덜 익은 과일과 닮아 있다면, 우리가 성경읽기와 순종을 통해 주님을 알아갈 때 하나님이 성령을 통해 우리를 부드럽게 바꾸어 주신다는 것을 믿어도 됩니다.

A RIPENING PROCESS

Early in his fifty-year ministry in Cambridge, England, Charles Simeon (1759–1836) met a neighboring pastor, Henry Venn, and his daughters. After the visit, the daughters remarked how harsh and self-assertive the young man seemed. In response, Venn asked his daughters to pick a peach from the trees. When they wondered why their father would want the unripe fruit, he responded, “Well, my dears, it is green now, and we must wait; but a little more sun, and a few more showers, and the peach will be ripe and sweet. So it is with Mr. Simeon.”

Over the years Simeon did soften through God’s transforming grace. One reason was his commitment to read the Bible and pray every day. A friend who stayed with him for a few months witnessed this practice and remarked, “Here was the secret of his great grace and spiritual strength.”

Simeon in his daily time with God followed the practice of the prophet Jeremiah, who faithfully listened for God’s words. Jeremiah depended on them so much that he said, “When your words came, I ate them.” He mulled and chewed over God’s words, which were his “joy” and “heart’s delight” (JEREMIAH 15:16).

If we too resemble a sour green fruit, we can trust that God will help to soften us through His Spirit as we get to know Him through reading and obeying the Scriptures. AMY BOUCHER PYE

예배하는 삶

어느 크리스천 컨퍼런스 센터의 조식 뷔페 줄에 서 있을 때 한 무리의 여성들이 식당으로 들어왔습니다. 나는 내 뒤로 와서 줄을 선 여성에게 웃으면서 인사를 했습니다. 그런데 그녀가 내 인사에 답하며 “내가 당신을 알아요.”라고 말했습니다. 우리는 스크램블드에그를 접시에 담으며 어디서 만났는지 기억하려고 애썼습니다. 하지만 나는 그녀가 나를 다른 사람으로 착각하고 있다는 확신이 들었습니다.

점심을 먹으러 왔을 때 그녀가 내게 다가왔습니다. “흰색 차를 운전하지 않나요?”

“그랬지요. 몇 년 전에.” 나는 어깨를 으쓱하며 대답했습니다. 그녀는 웃으며 말했습니다. “우리는 거의 매일 아침 초등학교 근처의 같은 신호등에서 멈추어 기다리고 있었어요. 그런데 당신은 언제나 손을 들고 즐겁게 노래하고 있었어요. 나는 당신이 하나님을 예배하고 있다고 생각했어요. 그 모습을 보며 나도 같이 예배하고 싶어졌어요. 힘든 날조차도요.”

우리는 하나님을 찬양하며 함께 기도하고 포옹하며 점심을 맛있게 먹었습니다.

내 새 친구는 우리가 아무도 보는 사람이 없다고 여길 때에도 사람들은 예수님을 따르는 자들이 어떻게 행동하는지를 눈여겨보고 있다는 사실을 확인시켜주었습니다. 우리가 즐거이 예배하는 삶을 받아들일 때 언제 어디서나 우리의 창조주 앞에 나아갈 수 있습니다. 주님의 영원한 사랑과 신실하심을 알고 나면 우리는 주님과 깊은 교감을 나누고 주님의 지속되는 보살핌에 감사하게 됩니다(시편 100). 우리가 차 안에서 찬양하든 공공장소에서 기도하든, 혹은 선한 행실로 하나님의 사랑을 전하든, 우리는 다른 사람들이 “그의 이름을 송축하도록”(4절) 감화시킬 수 있습니다. 하나님을 예배하는 것은 주일 아침 행사 그 이상의 것입니다.

A LIFESTYLE OF WORSHIP

As I waited in the breakfast buffet line at a Christian conference center, a group of women entered the dining hall. I smiled, saying hello to a woman who stepped into the line behind me. Returning my greeting, she said, “I know you.” We scooped scrambled eggs onto our plates and tried to figure out where we’d met. But I was pretty sure she’d mistaken me for someone else.

When we returned for lunch, the woman approached me. “Do you drive a white car?”

I shrugged. “I used to. A few years ago.”

She laughed. “We stopped at the same traffic light by the elementary school almost every morning,” she said. “You’d always be lifting your hands, singing joyfully. I thought you were worshiping God. That made me want to join in, even on tough days.”

Praising God, we prayed together, hugged, and enjoyed lunch.

My new friend affirmed that people notice how Jesus’ followers behave, even when we think no one is watching. As we embrace a lifestyle of joyful worship, we can come before our Creator anytime and anywhere. Acknowledging His enduring love and faithfulness, we can enjoy intimate communion with Him and thank Him for His ongoing care (PSALM 100). Whether we’re singing praises in our cars, praying in public, or spreading God’s love through kind acts, we can inspire others to “praise his name” (V. 4). 예수님의 속도로 움직이기

최근에 차를 수리해야 했습니다. 정비소가 집에서 1 마일(1.6킬로미터) 거리의 가까운 곳에 있어서 차를 맡기고 그냥 걸어서 집으로 가기로 했습니다. 번잡한 도로의 옆길을 따라 걸으면서 나는 사람들이 다 ‘매우’ 빠르게 움직이고 있다는 것을 새삼 느꼈습니다.

이 사실을 알아차리는 것은 그리 어려운 일이 아닙니다. 자동차들은 보행자들보다 더 빠르게 지나갑니다. 휙, 휙, 휙! 느긋하게 걸어 집으로 가면서 나는 우리가 빠르게 움직이는 것에 아주 익숙해져 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 항상 그렇게 빨리 움직입니다. 그러고 나서 또 종종 하나님도 그렇게 빨리 움직여주시길 기대한다는 것도 깨닫게 되었습니다. 나는 하나님의 계획이 나의 급한 시간표에 맞추어지기를 원합니다.

예수님이 이 땅에 계실 때 겉보기에 더디어 보이는 주님의 속도는 때때로 제자들을 실망시켰습니다. 요한복음 11장에서 마리아와 마르다는 그들의 오라버니 나사로가 병 들었다는 연락을 보냈습니다. 그들은 예수님이 도와주실 수 있다는 것을 알았습니다(1-3절). 그러나 주님은 나사로가 죽고 나흘이 지나 도착하셨습니다(17절). 마르다는 예수님께 “주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다”(21절)라고 말했습니다. 바꾸어 말해 예수님이 빨리 움직이지 않으셨다는 말입니다. 하지만 주님은 나사로를 죽은 자들 가운데서 살리시려는 더 커다란 계획을 가지고 계셨습니다(38-44절).

MOVING AT THE SPEED OF JESUS

Recently, my car needed work. The mechanic’s shop was close, a mile from my home. So I decided to just walk home. But as I shuffled along next to a bustling thoroughfare, I noticed something: Everyone else was moving so fast.

This isn’t rocket science. Cars go faster than pedestrians. Zip, zip, zip! As I ambled home, I had a realization: We’re so used to moving fast. All the time. Then, another realization: I often expect God to move just as quickly. I want His plans to fit my speedy timetable.

When Jesus lived on earth, His seemingly slow pace sometimes disappointed His friends. In John 11, Mary and Martha sent word that their brother, Lazarus, was sick. They knew Jesus could help (VV. 1–3). But He arrived some four days later (V. 17), after Lazarus had died. “ ‘Lord,’ Martha said to Jesus, ‘if you had been here, my brother would not have died’ ” (V. 21). Translation: Jesus didn’t move fast enough. But He had bigger plans: raising Lazarus from the dead (VV. 38–44).

Can you relate to Martha’s desperation? I can. Sometimes, I long for Jesus to move more quickly to answer a prayer. Sometimes, it seems like He’s late. But Jesus’ sovereign schedule is different from ours. He accomplishes His saving work on His timetable, not ours. And the ultimate outcome displays His glory and goodness in ways that are so much greater than our plans. ADAM R. HOLZ

홍수가 날 때

나는 록키산맥과 매년 폭설로 유명한 미국 서부의 콜로라도 주에 살고 있습니다. 그러나 우리 주의 최악의 자연재해는 눈 때문이 아니라 비 때문이었습니다. 1976년 7월 31일, 에스테스 파크라는 휴양지 마을 주변의 빅 톰슨 계곡에 홍수가 발생했습니다. 마침내 물이 다 빠져나가자 많은 가축과 함께 144명의 인명 피해가 있었습니다. 그 재난에 바로 이어 그 지역에서 중요한 연구들, 특히 도로와 고속도로의 기초에 관한 중요한 연구들이 수행되었습니다. 그 폭우를 견뎌낸 도로벽들이 있었는데, 그것들은 콘크리트로 그 속을 채운 것들이었습니다. 다시 말해, 그 도로벽들은 확실하고 견고한 기반을 가지고 있었던 것입니다.

WHEN THE FLOODS COME

I live in Colorado, a state in the western US known for the Rocky Mountains and our annual snowfall. Yet the worst natural disaster in my state had nothing to do with snow, but rain. The Big Thompson flood occurred on July 31, 1976, around the resort town of Estes Park. When the water finally receded, the death toll was 144 lives, not including livestock. In the wake of that disaster significant studies were done in the area, especially in regard to the foundation of roads and highways. The walls of the roads that withstood the storm were those filled with concrete. In other words, they had a sure and strong foundation.

In our lives the question is not if the floods will come, but when. Sometimes we have advance notice, but usually not. Jesus stresses a strong foundation for such times—one built by not just hearing His words but also by living out the gospel (LUKE 6:47). That practice is almost like pouring concrete into our lives. When the floods come, and they will, we can withstand them because we’ve been “well built” (V. 48). The absence of practice leaves our lives vulnerable to collapse and destruction (V. 49). It’s the difference between being wise and foolish.

It’s good to pause occasionally and do a little foundation assessment. Jesus will help us to fortify the weak places that we might stand strong in His power when the floods come. JOHN BLASE

미지의 바다

뉴욕에서는 타임스퀘어에서 공이 밑으로 내려가고, 런던에서는 군중들이 빅벤의 종소리에 맞춰 카운트다운을 합니다. 그리고 호주의 시드니 항만에서는 불꽃놀이가 시작됩니다. 우리가 사는 도시가 어떤 식으로 새해를 맞든, 새해를 맞이하며 새롭게 시작하는 것은 흥분되는 일입니다. 새해 첫날에 우리는 새로운 바다 속으로 들어서게 됩니다. 그 바다에서 우리는 어떤 친구를 만나고 어떤 기회를 찾게 될까요?

그러나 이 모든 흥분에도 불구하고 새해는 무언가 불안감을 주기도 합니다. 아무도 미래를 알지 못하고, 어떤 풍랑이 우리를 기다릴지 모르기 때문입니다. 갖가지 새해 풍습들도 그 사실을 반영해주고 있습니다. 불꽃놀이는 중국에서 발명되었는데, 아마도 악령을 쫓아내고 풍요로운 한 해를 기원하려고 시작한 것 같습니다. 그리고 새해에 새롭게 결심하는 것은 바벨론 사람들이 그들의 신들을 달래기 위해 서약한 데서 비롯되었습니다. 이런 행동들은 다 알지 못할 미래를 안전한 것으로 만들고자 시도했던 것들이었습니다.

바벨론 사람들은 이스라엘을 포함하여 다른 나라들을 정복하기에 바쁠 때에는 서약을 해가며 신들을 달래지 않았습니다. 때가 되어 하나님은 노예가 된 유대인들에게 이런 메시지를 보내셨습니다. “너는 두려워하지 말라...... 네가 물 가운데로 지날 때에 내가 너와 함께 할 것이라”(이사야 43:1-2). 후에 예수님도 제자들과 함께 배에서 심한 풍랑을 만났을 때 비슷한 말씀을 하셨습니다. 예수님은 “어찌하여 무서워하느냐”고 말씀하신 후 물더러 잠잠하라고 명령하셨습니다(마태복음 8:23-27).

새해 첫날인 오늘, 우리는 해안가에서 새로운 미지의 바다 속으로 들어서게 됩니다. 우리가 무슨 일을 만나든, 예수님은 우리와 함께 하시며 파도를 잠잠하게 하실 능력이 있습니다.

UNCHARTED WATERS

The ball drops in New York’s Times Square. The crowd counts down to Big Ben chiming. Sydney Harbor erupts in fireworks. However your city marks it, there’s something exciting about welcoming in a new year and the fresh start it brings. On New Year’s Day we push out into new waters. What friendships and opportunities might we find?

For all its excitement, though, a new year can be unsettling. None of us knows the future or what storms it may hold. Many New Year’s traditions reflect this: Fireworks were invented in China to supposedly ward off evil spirits and make a new season prosperous. And New Year’s resolutions date back to the Babylonians who made vows to appease their gods. Such acts were an attempt to make an unknown future secure.

When they weren’t making vows, the Babylonians were busy conquering people—including Israel. In time, God sent the enslaved Jews this message: “Do not fear . . . . When you pass through the waters, I will be with you” (ISAIAH 43:1–2). Later, Jesus said something similar when He and the disciples were caught sailing in a violent storm. “Why are you so afraid?” He told them before commanding the waters to be still (MATTHEW 8:23–27).

Today we push out from the shore into new, uncharted waters. Whatever we face, He’s with us—and He has the power to calm the waves. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

삶의 불꽃

새해 전야에 세계 여러 도시와 마을에서 고출력 폭죽을 터뜨릴 때 일부러 소리가 크게 나게 만든다고 합니다. 제조업자들은 원래 화려한 불꽃놀이는 말 그대로 ‘공중을 가르기’ 위한 것이라고 말합니다. “연발 폭죽”은 특히 지상 가까이서 폭발했을 때 가장 큰 소리를 낸다고 합니다. 우리의 걱정거리도 생각과 마음과 가정에서 폭발할 수 있습니다. 가족 간의 갈등, 관계의 문제, 직장에서의 어려움, 재정 문제, 심지어 교회의 분열과 같은 삶의 “불꽃”들은 우리의 감정 세계를 뒤흔드는 폭죽처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다.

그러나 우리는 이런 소동 속에서 우리를 건져주시는 분을 압니다. 바울은 에베소서 2장 14절에서 그리스도가 바로 “우리의 평화”라고 했습니다. 우리가 그분 안에 거하면 주님의 평화는 어떤 혼란보다도 더 커서 모든 걱정과 상처와 분열의 소음을 잠재웁니다.

그것은 유대인과 이방인 모두에게 강력한 확신이었을 것입니다. 그들은 한때 “세상에서 소망이 없이 하나님도 없이” 살았습니다(12절). 이제 그들은 박해와 분열이라는 내부의 위협에 처했습니다. 그러나 그들은 그리스도 안에서 주님의 피로 말미암아 주님께로 가까이 왔고, 그 결과 서로 가까워졌습니다. “그는 우리의 화평이신지라 둘로 하나를 만드사 중간에 막힌 담을 허시고” (14절).

불안과 분열의 위협이 언제 다가올지 모를 새해를 맞이하면서, 인생의 시끄러운 문제들을 내려놓고 언제나 우리 곁에 “평화”로 임재하시는 그분을 찾읍시다. 주님은 폭발을 잠재우고 우리를 치유하십니다.

FIREWORKS OF LIFE

On New Year’s Eve, when high-powered fireworks detonate across cities and towns worldwide, the noise is loud on purpose. By their nature, say manufacturers, flashy fireworks are meant to split the atmosphere, literally. “Repeater” blasts can sound the loudest, especially when exploded near the ground.

Troubles, too, can boom through our hearts, minds, and homes. The “fireworks” of life—family struggles, relationship problems, work challenges, financial strain, even church division—can feel like explosions, rattling our emotional atmosphere.

Yet we know the One who lifts us over this uproar. Christ Himself “is our peace,” Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:14. When we abide in His presence, His peace is greater than any disruption, quieting the noise of any worry, hurt, or disunity.

This would have been powerful assurance to Jews and gentiles alike. They’d once lived “without hope and without God in the world” (V. 12). Now they faced threats of persecution and internal threats of division. But in Christ, they’d been brought near to Him, and consequently to each other, by His blood. “For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility” (V. 14).

As we start a new year, with threats of unrest and division ever rumbling on the horizon, let’s turn from life’s noisy trials to seek our ever-present Peace. He quiets the booms, healing us.

진정한 성공

대담하러 나온 초대손님은 나의 질문들에 정중히 답해 주었습니다. 그런데 대화를 하면서도 뭔가 석연치 않은 느낌이 있었습니다. 그것은 지나가는 말 한 마디에 드러났습니다.

“선생님은 수천 명의 사람에게 감동을 주고 계시군요.”라고 내가 말했습니다.

그러자 그가 중얼거렸습니다. “수천 명이 아니라 ‘수백 만명’이죠.”

그리고 그는 나의 무지함을 깨우쳐 주기라도 하려는 듯 본인이 맡은 직책과 업적들, 그리고 자기가 실렸던 잡지 이름들을 쭉 이야기했습니다. 참 어색한 순간이었습니다.

그 일 후에 나는 하나님께서 시내 산에서 모세에게 자신을 어떻게 나타내셨는지를 보고 놀라지 않을 수 없었습니다(출애굽기 34:5-7). 우주의 창조자이시고 인류의 주관자이신 하나님이시지만 하나님은 그런 칭호를 말씀하지 않으셨습니다. 천억 개의 은하계를 지으신 하나님은 그런 업적도 언급하지 않으셨습니다. 대신 하나님은 “자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많다”라고 자신을 소개하셨습니다(6절). 하나님은 자신이 누구인지 밝히실 때 직책이나 업적이 아닌 성품을 말씀하십니다.

하나님의 형상대로 창조되었고 하나님을 본받는 자로 부름받은 우리에게 (창세기 1:27; 에베소서 5:1-2) 이것은 큰 교훈입니다. 업적도 좋은 것이고 직책도 필요합니다. 그러나 정말 중요한 것은 우리가 얼마나 자비와 은혜와 사랑을 실천하는 사람이 되는가 하는 것입니다.

그 대담에 나온 손님처럼 우리도 업적을 내세워 자신을 드러낼 수 있습니다. 나도 그랬으니까요. 그러나 하나님은 참된 성공이 무엇인지 본을 보여주셨습니다. 그것은 명함이나 이력서에 쓰여 있는 것이 아니라 우리가 얼마나 하나님을 닮아가는가 하는 것입니다.

TRUE SUCCESS

My interview guest politely answered my questions. I had a feeling, though, that something lurked beneath our interaction. A passing comment brought it out.

“You’re inspiring thousands of people,” I said.

“Not thousands,” he muttered. “Millions.”

And as if pitying my ignorance, my guest reminded me of his credentials—the titles he held, the things he’d achieved, the magazine he’d graced. It was an awkward moment.

Ever since that experience, I’ve been struck by how God revealed Himself to Moses on Mount Sinai (EXODUS 34:5–7). Here was the Creator of the cosmos and Judge of humanity, but God didn’t use His titles. Here was the Maker of 100 billion galaxies, but such feats weren’t mentioned either. Instead, God introduced Himself as “the
compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (V. 6). When He reveals who He is, it isn’t His titles or achievements He lists but the kind of character He has.

As people made in God’s image and called to follow His example (GENESIS 1:27; EPHESIANS 5:1–2), this is profound. Achievement is good, titles have their place, but what really matters is how compassionate, gracious, and loving we’re becoming.

Like that interview guest, we too can base our significance on our achievements. I have. But our God has modeled what true success is—not what’s written on our business cards and resumés, but how we’re becoming like Him.

보이지 않아도 존재하는 세계

1876년 인디애나주 중부 한 탄광에서 작업 중이던 광부들은 자신들이 지옥으로 가는 문을 보았다고 생각했습니다. 역사학자 존 발로우 마틴에 의하면 지하 600피트(183미터) 지점에서 “무시무시한 굉음에 악취를 동반한 가스가 터졌다”고 합니다. “악마가 사는 굴의 지붕을 건드렸다”며 두려워한 광부들은 갱도를 막고 황급히 집으로 도망갔습니다.

물론 그것은 광부들의 착각이었습니다. 몇 년 뒤 그 지점을 다시 팠을 때 다량의 천연가스가 발견되었으니까요. 광부들이 착각은 하였지만 그래도 나는 그 광부들이 나와는 달리 영의 세계를 의식하며 살았다는 점에서 은근히 부럽기도 합니다. 나는 초자연계와 자연계는 쉽게 만날 수 없는 것이라고 생각해버리고, “우리의 씨름이 혈과 육을 상대하는 것이 아니요......하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 상대하는 것”(에베소서 6:12)이라는 사실을 쉽게 망각합니다.

세상에서 악이 이기는 것을 볼 때 그냥 악에 굴복하거나 자신의 힘으로 물리치려 해서는 안 됩니다. 오히려 “하나님의 전신 갑주”(13-18절)를 입음으로 악에게 맞서야 합니다. “마귀의 간계를 능히 대적하는”(11절) 힘을 얻으려면 말씀을 공부하고, 믿음의 사람들이 정기적으로 모여 서로를 격려하며 다른 사람들의 유익을 먼저 생각해야 합니다. 성령으로 무장한다면 어떤 상황에서도 굳게 설 수 있습니다(13절).

UNSEEN REALITIES

In 1876, men drilling for coal in central Indiana thought they had found the gates of hell. Historian John Barlow Martin reports that at six hundred feet, “foul fumes issued forth amid awesome noises.” Afraid they had “bitten into the roof of the devil’s cave,” the miners plugged the well and scurried back to their homes.

The miners, of course, were mistaken—and some years later, they would drill again and be rich in natural gas. Even though they were mistaken, I find myself a little jealous of them. These miners lived with an awareness of the spiritual world that is often missing from my own life. It’s easy for me to live as if the supernatural and the natural rarely intersect and to forget that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but . . . against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (EPHESIANS 6:12).

When we see evil winning in our world, we shouldn’t give in or try to fight it in our own strength. Instead, we’re to resist evil by putting on “the full armor of God” (VV. 13–18). Studying Scripture, meeting regularly with other believers for encouragement, and making choices with the good of others in mind can help us “stand against the devil’s schemes” (V. 11). Equipped by the Holy Spirit, we can stand firm in the face of anything (V. 13).
