허물어진 곳을 다시 세우기

다웨인은 열일곱 살 때 도둑질과 헤로인 중독으로 남아공 케이프타운의 마넨버그에 있는 집을 나가야 했습니다. 그러나 멀리 간 것은 아니었습니다. 어머니 집 뒷마당에 양철 골판으로 오두막집을 짓고 지냈는데, 그곳은 얼마 안가 카지노라는 마약 소굴이 되었습니다. 그러다 19살에 다웨인은 예수님을 믿고 구원을 얻게 되었습니다. 마약을 끊기까지 길고도 힘든 여정이었지만, 하나님의 도우심과 예수님을 믿는 친구들의 협조로 마약에서 벗어날 수 있었습니다. 그리고 그 카지노를 지은 지 10년이 되어 그와 친구들은 그 오두막집을 가정교회로 바꾸었습니다. 한때 어둡고 기분 나빴던 장소가 지금은 예배와 기도의 장소가 된 것입니다.

이 교회 지도자들은 하나님께서 다웨인과 이전의 카지노에 하신 것처럼 어떻게 사람과 집에 치유와 회복을 가져다주시는지 설명하기 위해 예레미야 33장을 봅니다. 예레미야 선지자는 잡혀간 하나님의 백성들을 향해 비록 성읍이 무너질지라도 하나님은 그의 백성을 치유하시고 “다시 세우셔서” 죄로부터 깨끗하게 하실 것이라고 말했습니다(예레미야 33:7-8). 그러면 그 성읍은 하나님께 기쁨과 찬송, 그리고 영광의 장소가 될 것이었습니다(9절).

슬픔과 비통을 자아내는 죄 때문에 좌절을 느낄 때, 하나님이 마넨버그 뒷마당에서 하셨던 것 같이 우리에게 치유와 소망을 주시기를 계속 기도합시다.

REBUILDING THE RUINS

At seventeen, Dowayne had to leave his family’s home in Manenberg, a part of Cape Town, South Africa, because of his stealing and addiction to heroin. He didn’t go far, building a shack of corrugated metal in his mother’s backyard, which soon became known as the Casino, a place to use drugs. When he was nineteen, however, Dowayne came to saving faith in Jesus. His journey off drugs was long and exhausting, but he got clean with God’s help and with the support of friends who are believers in Jesus. And ten years after Dowayne built the Casino, he and others turned the hut into a house church. What was once a dark and foreboding place now is a place of worship and prayer.

The leaders of this church look to Jeremiah 33 for how God can bring healing and restoration to people and places, as He’s done with Dowayne and the former Casino. The prophet Jeremiah spoke to God’s people in captivity, saying that although the city would not be spared, yet God would heal His people and would “rebuild them,” cleansing them from their sin (JEREMIAH 33:7–8). Then the city would bring Him joy, renown, and honor (V. 9).

When we’re tempted to despair over the sin that brings heartbreak and brokenness, let’s continue to pray that God will bring healing and hope, even as He’s done in a backyard in Manenberg.

한밤중의 노래

이미 해가 저문 저녁인데 집의 전기가 갑자기 나갔습니다. 그때 나와 함께 있던 어린 두 아이는 정전을 처음 겪었습니다. 전기 회사에 알린 후 촛불 몇 개를 켜고 부엌에서 아이들과 함께 깜박이는 촛불 주위로 옹기종기 모여 앉았습니다. 아이들이 긴장하고 불안해하는 것 같아서 우리는 노래를 부르기 시작했습니다. 곧 아이들 얼굴의 걱정스러운 표정이 웃음으로 바뀌었습니다. 때로는 우리의 가장 어두운 순간에 노래가 필요합니다.

시편 103편은 하나님의 백성들이 포로생활에서 폐허가 된 고국으로 돌아와 드린 기도이자 노래입니다. 위기의 순간에 그들에게는 노래가 필요했습니다. 그것도 아무 노래가 아니라 하나님과 그가 하신 일들을 찬양하는 노래였습니다. 시편 103편은 또한 긍휼이 많으시고 은혜로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시고 인자가 풍부하신 하나님(8절)을 기억하게 도와줍니다. 그리고 그 시편은 죄에 대한 심판을 아직도 걱정하고 있는 우리에게 하나님은 화내지 않으시고, 용서하시며, 긍휼히 여기신다고 말합니다. 이 모든 것이 우리 삶의
어두운 밤에 노래해야 할 좋은 이유입니다.

A SONG IN THE NIGHT

The sun had long set when our electrical power suddenly went out. I was at home with our two younger children, and this was their first time experiencing a power outage. After verifying that the utility company knew about the outage, I located some candles, and the kids and I huddled together in the kitchen around the flickering flames. They seemed nervous and unsettled, so we began to sing. Soon the concerned looks on their faces were replaced with smiles. Sometimes in our darkest moments we need
a song.

Psalm 103 may be one of the psalms prayed or sung after the people of God had returned from exile to a homeland that had been laid waste. In a moment of crisis, they needed to sing. But not just any song, they needed to sing about who God is and what He does. Psalm 103 also helps us remember that He’s compassionate, merciful, patient, and full of faithful love (V. 8). And in case we wonder if the judgment for our sin still hangs over our heads, the psalm announces that God isn’t angry, He has forgiven, and
He feels compassion. These are good things to sing about during the dark nights of our lives.

Maybe that’s where you find yourself—in a dark and difficult place, wondering if God really is good, questioning His love for you. If so, pray and sing to the One who abounds in love!

누가 나를 필요로 하는가?

워싱턴 DC로 가는 밤 비행기에서 칼럼니스트 아서 브룩스는 한 할머니가 남편에게 “아무도 당신이 필요 없다는 말, 사실이 아니에요.”라고 속삭이는 것을 우연히 들었습니다. 남편은 죽었으면 좋겠다고 중얼거렸고, 부인은 “아, 그런 말 그만하세요.”라고 대답했습니다. 비행기가 도착하자 뒤돌아본 브룩스는 바로 그 남자를 알아보았습니다. 그는 세계적으로 유명한 영웅이었습니다. 다른 승객들은 그와 악수를 했고 기장은 몇십 년 전 그가 보여주었던 용기에 대해 감사를 표했습니다. 이런 위인이 어떻게 절망에 빠졌을까요?

WHO NEEDS ME?

While on a red-eye flight to Washington, DC, opinion writer Arthur Brooks overheard an elderly woman whisper to her husband, “It’s not true that no one needs you anymore.” The man murmured something about wishing he were dead, and his wife replied, “Oh, stop saying that.” When the flight ended, Brooks turned around and immediately recognized the man. He was a world-famous hero. Other passengers shook his hand, and the pilot thanked him for the courage he displayed decades ago.
How had this giant sunk into despair?

The prophet Elijah bravely and single-handedly defeated 450 prophets of Baal—or so he thought (1 KINGS 18). Yet he hadn’t really done it alone; God was there all along! But later, feeling all alone, he asked God to take his life.

God lifted Elijah’s spirits by bringing him into His presence and giving him new people to serve. He must go and “anoint Hazael king over Aram,” Jehu “king over Israel,” and Elisha “to succeed you as prophet” (19:15–16). Invigorated with renewed purpose, Elijah found and mentored his successor.

Your great victories may lie in the rearview mirror. You may feel your life has peaked, or that it never did. No matter. Look around. The battles may seem smaller, the stakes less profound, but there are still others who need you. Serve them well for Jesus’ sake, and it will count. They’re your purpose—the reason you’re still here.

세상에 기쁨을

매년 성탄절에 우리는 전 세계의 예수님 탄생 장면을 집에 장식합니다. 독일의 성탄 피라미드, 베들레헴 올리브나무로 만든 말구유, 그리고 밝은 색의 멕시코 민속 버전이 있습니다. 우리 가족이 가장 좋아하는 것은 아프리카에서 온 엉뚱한 것입니다. 전통적인 양과 낙타 대신에 하마 하나가 기쁜 듯 아기 예수님을 쳐다보고 있는 것입니다.

예수님이 어느 한 민족이나 문화권을 위해 탄생한 것이 아니하는 것을 말해주는 이 예쁜 작품들을 생각할 때, 각기 다른 문화의 시각들이 이들 탄생 장면에서 살아나 내 마음을 따뜻하게 합니다. 그것은 온 세상에 좋은 소식이며 모든 나라와 민족이 즐거워할 이유입니다.

우리가 가진 각 성탄 장면에 나타난 작은 아기는 온 세상을 향한 하나님의 이러한 진실한 마음을 드러냅니다. 요한은 예수님이 호기심 많은 바리새인 니고데모와의 대화에서 하신 말씀을 이렇게 기록했습니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라”(요한복음 3:16).

선물로 오신 예수님은 모두에게 좋은 소식입니다. 당신의 고향이 이 세상 어디이더라도 예수님의 탄생은 당신에게 하나님의 사랑과 평화를 줍니다. 그리고 그리스도 안에서 새로운 삶을 찾는 이들은 누구나 언젠가는 “각 족속과 방언과 백성과 나라 가운데에서” 하나님의 영광을 영원히 기념할 것입니다 (요한계시록 5:9).

JOY TO THE WORLD

Every Christmas we decorate our home with nativity scenes from around the world. We have a German nativity pyramid, a manger scene fashioned out of olive wood from
Bethlehem, and a brightly colored Mexican folk version. Our family favorite is a whimsical entry from Africa. Instead of the more traditional sheep and camels, a ippopotamus gazes contently at the baby Jesus.

The unique cultural perspective brought to life in these nativity scenes warms my heart as I ponder each beautiful reminder that Jesus’ birth was not just for one nation or culture. It’s good news for the whole earth, a reason for people from every country and ethnicity to rejoice.

The little baby depicted in each of our nativity scenes revealed this truth of God’s heart for the entire world. As John wrote in relation to Christ’s conversation with an inquisitive Pharisee named Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (JOHN 3:16).

The gift of Jesus is good news for everyone. No matter where on earth you call home, Jesus’ birth is God’s offer of love and peace to you. And all who find new life in Christ, “from every tribe and language and people and nation” will one day celebrate God’s glory forever and ever (REVELATION 5:9).

넘치는 평화

1914년 벨기에의 추운 성탄 전야에 군인들이 몸을 숨긴 참호에서 노랫소리가 흘러나왔습니다. “고요한 밤” 캐럴이 독일어에 이어서 영어로 울려 퍼졌습니다. 그날 일찍 서로 총을 겨누었던 병사들이 무기를 내려놓고 참호 밖으로 나와 그들 사이에 있는 “무인지대”에서 만나 악수하고, 서로 성탄 축하를 하며 그 자리에서 보급품을 선물로 교환했습니다. 휴전은 다음 날까지 이어져 병사들은 서로 이야기하며 웃고 심지어 함께 축구 시합까지 했습니다.

제1차 세계대전 당시 서부전선에서 있었던 1914년의 크리스마스 휴전은 오래전 첫 크리스마스 때 천사들이 선포한 평화를 잠시 보여주었습니다. 한 천사가 겁에 질린 목자들을 안심시키며 말했습니다. “무서워하지 말라 보라 내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”(누가복음 2:10-11). 그리고 수많은 천사가 나타나 “‘가장 높은 하늘에서는 하나님께 영광! 땅에서는 하나님의 은총을 받은 사람들에게 평화!’하며 하나님을 찬송하였습니다”(13-14절, 현대인의 성경).

예수님은 우리를 죄에서 구원하는 “평화의 왕”이십니다(이사야 9:6). 십자가 위에서의 예수님의 희생을 통해 주님을 믿는 모든 사람은 용서와 하나님과의 화평을 누릴 수 있습니다.

WHEN PEACE BREAKS OUT

On a cold Christmas Eve in Belgium in 1914, the sound of singing floated from the trenches where soldiers were dug in. Strains of the carol “Silent Night” rang out in German and then in English. Soldiers who earlier in the day had been shooting at each other laid down their weapons and emerged from their trenches to shake hands in the “no man’s land” between them, exchanging Christmas greetings and spontaneous gifts from their rations. The ceasefire continued through the next day as the soldiers talked and laughed and even organized soccer matches together.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 that occurred along World War I’s Western Front offered a brief glimpse of the peace the angels proclaimed on the first Christmas long ago. An angel spoke to terrified shepherds with these reassuring words: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you” (LUKE 2:10–11). Then a multitude of angels appeared, “praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests’” (VV. 13–14)

Jesus is the “Prince of Peace” who saves us from our sins (ISAIAH 9:6). Through His sacrifice on the cross He offers forgive- ness and peace with God to all who trust in Him.

현란함보다 영광을

아들 재비어가 오랫동안 손으로 직접 만든 성탄 장식들과 할머니가 매년 그에게 보내준 유행 지난 방울 장식들을 보면서, 나는 왜 그것들이 마음에 들지 않는지 이유를 알 수 없었습니다. 나는 각 장식에 담겨 있는 창의성이나 추억들을 항상 중요하게 생각합니다. 그런데 왜 상점 진열장에 전시된 잘 어울리는 전구와 반짝거리는 방울, 비단 리본으로 장식된 크리스마스트리가 더 갖고 싶은 걸까요?

그런데 우리의 그 초라한 장식에서 눈을 돌리려는 순간 빨간 하트 모양의 장식이 눈에 띄었습니다. 거기에는 ‘예수, 내 구주’라는 간단한 문구가 적혀 있었습니다. 어떻게 내가 성탄절을 사랑하는 이유가 바로 그리스도 안에 있는 내 가족과 내 소망이라는 것을 잊어버릴 수 있었을까요? 우리 집의 소박한 크리스마스트리는 가게에 진열된 것과는 비교도 안 되지만, 장식마다 담겨 있는 그 사랑은 우리의 트리를 아름답게 만들었습니다.

그 소박한 트리처럼 메시아 역시 어떤 식으로도 세상의 기대에 미치지 못했습니다(이사야 53:2). 예수님은 사람들에게 “멸시받고 버림받으셨습니다” (3절). 하지만 예수님은 “우리의 허물 때문에 찔림”(5절)을 몸소 당하시며 놀라운 사랑을 보여주셨습니다. 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리가 평화를 누릴 수 있게 되었습니다(5절). 이보다 더 아름다운 것은 없습니다.

우리의 불완전한 장식들과 우리의 완전한 구세주에 새삼 감사하며, 나는 화려함을 바라던 마음을 내려놓고 영광스러운 사랑의 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 화려한 장식은 하나님의 희생으로 주신 선물인 예수님의 아름다움과 결코 비교될 수 없습니다.

NO GLITZ, JUST GLORY

Looking at the handmade Christmas ornaments my son, Xavier, crafted over the years and the annual mismatched baubles Grandma had sent him, I couldn’t figure out why I was not content with our decorations. I’d always valued the creativity and memories each ornament represented. So, why did the allure of the retail stores’ holiday displays tempt me to desire a tree adorned with perfectly matched bulbs, shimmering orbs, and satin ribbons?

As I began to turn away from our humble decor, I glimpsed a red, heart-shaped ornament with a simple phrase scripted on it—Jesus, My Savior. How could I have forgotten that my family and my hope in Christ are the reasons I love celebrating Christmas? Our simple tree looked nothing like the trees in the storefronts, but the love behind every decoration made it beautiful.

Like our modest tree, the Messiah didn’t meet the world’s expectations in any way (ISAIAH 53:2). Jesus “was despised and rejected” (V. 3). Yet, in an amazing display of love, He still chose to be “pierced for our transgressions” (V. 5). He endured punishment, so we could enjoy peace (V. 5). Nothing is more beautiful than that.

With renewed gratitude for our imperfect decorations and our perfect Savior, I stopped longing for glitz and praised God for His glorious love. Sparkling adornments could never match the beauty of His sacrificial gift—Jesus.

좋은 책 읽기

작은 나라 아이슬란드는 책을 많이 읽는 나라입니다. 보도에 의하면 실제로 이 나라는 1인당 연 출판 부수와 독서량이 다른 어떤 나라보다 많습니다. 아이슬란드에는 크리스마스 전날 가족과 친구에게 책을 선물하고 밤늦게까지 책을 읽는 전통이 있습니다. 이 전통은 수입은 막혔지만 종이가 저렴했던 제2차 세계대전 때 시작되었습니다. 아이슬란드의 출판사들은 늦가을에 새 책들을 홍수처럼 시장에 내놓았습니다. 지금은 신간 목록이 11월 중순에 아이슬란드의 집집마다 보내집니다. 이 전통은 “성탄 신간 홍수”로 알려져 있습니다.

감사하게도 하나님은 많은 작가에게 능력을 주어 좋은 이야기를 만들고, 그 글들로 사람들이 배우고 감동을 받고 동기부여도 받게 하셨습니다. 좋은 책보다 더 좋은 것은 없습니다! 다른 무엇보다 베스트셀러인 성경은 많은 사람의 시와 산문으로 이루어져 있습니다. 위대한 이야기도 있고 그렇지 못한 이야기도 있지만 모두가 성령의 감동으로 기록되었습니다. 바울 사도가 디모데에게 상기시킨 것처럼 “모든 성경은 하나님의 감동으로 된 것으로 교훈과 책망과 바르게 함과 의로 교육하기에 유익하며” 하나님의 사람으로 “모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게” 합니다(디모데후서 3:16-17). 성경을 읽으면 마음에 찔림이 있고, 감동이 있고, 하나님을 위해 사는데 도움이 됩니다. 그리고 우리를 진리로 인도해줍니다(2:15).

책을 읽으려면 시간을 내어 책 중의 책인 성경에 깊이 빠져보시기를 바랍니다.

CURLING UP WITH THE GOOD BOOK

The small country of Iceland is a nation of readers. In fact, it’s reported that each year this nation publishes and reads more books per person than any other country. On Christmas Eve, it’s a tradition for Icelanders to give books to family and friends and then read long into the night. This tradition dates back to World War II, when imports were restricted but paper was cheap. Icelandic publishers began flooding the market with new titles in late fall. Now a catalog of the country’s new releases is sent to every Icelandic home in mid-November. This tradition is known as the Christmas Book Flood.

We can be thankful God blessed so many with the ability to craft a good story and to educate, inspire, or motivate others through their words. There’s nothing like a good book! The best-selling book of all, the Bible, was composed by many authors who wrote in poetry and prose—some great stories, some not so—but all of it inspired. As the apostle Paul reminded Timothy, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” and equipping God’s people “for every good work” (2 TIMOTHY 3:16–17). Reading the Bible convicts, inspires, and helps us to live for Him—and guides us into the truth (2:15).

In our reading, let’s not forget to find time to curl up with the greatest book of all, the Bible.

아기 이름 짓기

요셉과 함께 아기가 태어나기를 기다리던 마리아는 그에게 물어볼 필요가 없는 대화가 하나 있었습니다. “요셉, 아기 이름을 뭐라고 지을까요?” 출산을 기다리는 대부분의 부부와는 달리 마리아와 요셉은 아기를 어떻게 부를지에 대해 전혀 고민하지 않았습니다. 마리아와 요셉을 차례로 방문한 천사들은 아기의 이름을 예수라 하라고 말했습니다(마태복음 1:20­-21; 누가복음 1:30­-31). 요셉에게 나타난 천사는 그에게 그 이름이 아기가 “그들의 죄로부터 그의 백성을 구할 것”을 의미한다고 설명했습니다.

또한 예수님을 “임마누엘”(이사야 7:14)이라고 부르리라 했는데 이는 “하나님께서 우리와 함께 계신다”라는 뜻입니다. 그가 강보에 싸인 하나님, 곧, 인간으로 오신 하나님이시기 때문입니다. 이사야 선지자는 “기묘자”, “모사”, “전능하신 하나님”, “영존하시는 아버지”, “평강의 왕”이라는 예수님께 합당한 다른 칭호들을 사용했습니다(9:6).

아기 이름을 지을 때는 언제나 설렙니다. 그러나 “메시아라고 불리는 예수”(마태복음 1:16)처럼 능력 있고, 설레고, 세상을 변화시키는 아기 이름은 없었습니다. “우리의 주 되신 예수 그리스도의 이름”(고린도전서 1:2)을 부를 수 있다는 것이 얼마나 감격스러운 일입니까! 구원을 받을 만한 다른 이름을 우리에게 주신 일이 없습니다(사도행전 4:12).

이번 크리스마스 시즌에는 예수님을 찬양하며 그의 이름이 우리에게 의미하는 모든 것을 생각해 보십시다!

WHAT TO NAME THE BABY

Here’s one conversation Mary didn’t have to have with Joseph as they awaited the birth of the baby she was carry- ing: “Joseph, what should we name the baby?” Unlike most people awaiting a birth, they had no question about what they would call this child.

The angels who visited Mary and then Joseph told them both that the baby’s name would be Jesus (MATTHEW 1:20–21; LUKE 1:30–31). The angel that appeared to Joseph explained that this name indicated that the baby would “save his people from their sins.”

He would also be called “Immanuel” (ISAIAH 7:14), which means “God is with us,” because He would be God in human form—deity wrapped in swaddling clothes. The prophet Isaiah revealed additional titles of “Wonderful Counselor,” “Mighty God,” “Everlasting Father,” and Prince of Peace” (9:6), because He would be all of those things.

It’s always exciting to name a new baby. But no other baby had such a powerful, exciting, world-changing name as the one who was “Jesus who is called the Messiah” (MATTHEW 1:16). What a thrill for us to be able to “call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 CORINTHIANS 1:2)! There’s no other name that saves (ACTS 4:12).

Let’s praise Jesus and contemplate everything He means to us this Christmas season!

푸른 풀밭을 찾으라

기장은 거슬리는 목소리로 또다시 출발 지연 방송을 했습니다. 이미 두 시간을 비좁은 비행기 창가에 꼼짝없이 앉아 있던 나는 몹시 짜증이 났습니다. 한 주일 간의 출장 일을 마친 나는 집에 가서 빨리 쉬고 싶었습니다. ‘얼마나 더 걸릴까?’ 빗방울로 덮인 창문을 내다보니 활주로가 만나는 곳의 시멘트 사이의 공간에서 외로이 자라는 삼각형의 푸른 잔디가 보였습니다. 온통 콘크리트 뿐인 곳에 아주 독특한 광경이었습니다.

경험 많은 목자이던 다윗은 그의 양들을 푸른 초장에서 쉬게 해줄 필요가 있다는 것을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 시편 23편에서 그는 이스라엘의 왕으로서 나라를 다스리느라 지친 자신을 인도할 중요한 교훈을 써놓았습니다. “여호와는 나의 목자시니 내게 부족함이 없으리로다 그가 나를 푸른 풀밭에 누이시며......내 영혼을 소생시키시고”(1-3절).

온통 콘크리트 뿐인 공항 활주로 위에서 출발이 늦어져 편히 쉴 수 없을 때, 나의 선한 목자이신 하나님은 내 눈을 자그맣게 자란 푸른 잔디로 향하게 하셨습니다. 하나님과 함께 있으면 어디에 있든지 하나님께서 끊임없이 주시는 쉼을 발견할 수 있습니다. 물론 내가 그것을 깨닫고 그 안에 들어가야 합니다.

그 교훈은 여러 해가 지나도록 잊혀지지 않았습니다. 푸른 그곳을 찾으십시오. 찾으면 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리 삶에 함께 하시면 우리에게 부족함이 없습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 푸른 풀밭에 누이시고 우리의 영혼을 새롭게 하십니다.

LOOK FOR THE GREEN

The gravelly voiced captain announced yet another delay. Crammed in my window seat aboard a plane that had already sat unmoving for two hours, I chafed in frustration. After a long workweek away, I longed for the comfort and rest of home. How much longer? As I gazed out the raindrop-covered window, I noticed a lonely triangle of green grass growing in the gap of cement where runways met. Such an odd sight in the middle of all that concrete.

As an experienced shepherd, David knew well the need to provide the rest of green pastures for his sheep. In Psalm 23, he penned an important lesson that would carry him forward in the exhausting days of leading as king of Israel. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, . . . he refreshes my soul” (VV. 1–3).

On the concrete jungle of an airport tarmac, delayed from my destination and feeling the lack of comfort and rest, God, my good Shepherd, directed my eyes to a patch of green. In relation- ship with Him, I can discover His ongoing provision of rest wherever I am—if I notice and enter it.

The lesson has lingered over the years: look for the green. It’s there. With God in our lives, we lack nothing. He makes us lie down in green pastures. He refreshes our souls.

누구를 옷입고 있습니까?

아르헨티나 여자 농구팀이 잘못된 유니폼을 입고 토너먼트 경기에 나왔습니다. 방문팀인 그들은 흰옷을 입어야 했는데 콜롬비아 팀의 짙은 청색 유니폼과 매우 비슷한 색의 유니폼을 입었습니다. 대체할 유니폼을 찾아 갈아입을 시간이 없어 그들은 경기를 몰수패 당했습니다. 다음에 아르헨티나 선수들은 자신들의 유니폼을 반드시 재확인할 것입니다.

스가랴 선지자 시대에 하나님은 스가랴에게 대제사장 여호수아가 냄새나고 더러운 옷을 입은 채 하나님 앞에 나오는 환상을 보여주었습니다. 사탄은 조롱하고 손가락질했습니다. 그는 자격을 상실했고, 경기는 종료 됐습니다! 그러나 그에게 갈아입을 시간이 주어졌습니다. 하나님은 사탄을 꾸짖으시고 천사에게 여호수아의 더러운 옷을 벗기라고 하셨습니다. 그리고 여호수아에게 “내가 네 죄악을 제거하여 버렸으니 네게 아름다운 옷을 입히리라”(스가랴 3:4)고 말씀하셨습니다.

우리는 태어날 때부터 입고 나온 냄새나는 아담의 죄 위에다 우리 자신의 죄를 겹겹이 쌓습니다. 더러운 옷을 계속 입고 있으면 인생의 경기에서 질 것입니다. 그러나 우리의 죄를 멀리하고 예수님께로 향하면 예수님은 우리의 머리부터 발끝까지 예수님 자신과 그의 의로 우리를 옷 입히실 것입니다. 이제 확인할 시간입니다. ‘당신은 누구를 옷입고 있습니까?’

찬송가 “이 몸의 소망 무엔가”의 마지막 절은 우리가 어떻게 이기는지를 말해줍니다. “바라던 천국 올라가 하나님 전에 뵈올 때 구주의 의를 힘입어 (옷입어) 어엿이 앞에 서리라.”

WHO ARE YOU WEARING?

The Argentine women’s basketball team came to their tournament game wearing the wrong uniforms. Their navy blue jerseys were too similar to Colombia’s dark blue jerseys, and as the visiting team they should have worn white. With no time to find replacement uniforms and change, they had to forfeit the game. In the future, Argentina will surely double-check what they’re wearing.

In the time of the prophet Zechariah, God showed him a vision in which the high priest Joshua came before God wearing smelly, filthy clothes. Satan sneered and pointed. He’s disqualified! Game over! But there was time to change. God rebuked Satan and told His angel to remove Joshua’s grubby garments. He turned to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you” (ZECHARIAH 3:4).

We came into this world wearing the stench of Adam’s sin, which we layer over with sin of our own. If we stay in our filthy clothes, we’ll lose the game of life. If we become disgusted with our sin and turn to Jesus, He’ll dress us from head to toe with Himself and His righteousness. It’s time to check, Who are we wearing?

The final stanza of the hymn “The Solid Rock” explains how we win. “When He shall come with trumpet sound, / Oh, may I then in Him be found; / Dressed in His righteousness alone, / Faultless to stand before the throne.”
