숨결과 찰나

나는 엄마와 언니들과 함께 아버지의 병상 옆에서 아버지의 숨결이 약해져 가고, 숨 쉬는 횟수가 점점 줄어 마침내 숨이 멈추는 것을 지켜보았습니다. 아버지는 여든 아홉 살이 되기 며칠 전 하나님이 기다리시는 곳으로 조용히 가셨습니다. 아버지가 떠나시자 한때 사셨던 자리에 빈 공간이 생겼고, 오직 추억과 기념이 되는 물건들만이 아버지를 생각나게 해주었습니다. 그러나 우리에게는 언젠가 다시 만난다는 희망이 있습니다.

우리에게 그런 희망이 있는 것은 아버지가 그를 잘 아시고 사랑하시는 하나님과 함께 계시다는 것을 믿기 때문입니다. 아버지가 태어나 첫 숨을 쉬셨을 때, 하나님이 거기 계셔서 아버지의 폐에 숨을 불어넣으셨습니다(이사야 42:5). 아니, 아버지의 첫 숨 이전에, 그리고 아버지가 매번 숨을 쉬실 때마다 하나님은 아버지의 삶의 세밀한 부분까지 친히 관여하셨습니다. 마치 지금 당신과 나의 삶의 세밀한 부분에 관여하시는 것처럼 말입니다. 모태에서 아버지를 멋지게 디자인하고 하나로 촘촘하게 “짠” 분이 하나님이셨습니다(시편 139:13-14). 그리고 아버지가 마지막 숨을 거두실 때, 성령께서 그곳에 계셔서 아버지를 사랑으로 붙들어 그를 하나님 곁으로 인도해주셨습니다(7-10절).

이것은 하나님의 자녀라면 누구에게나 똑같이 일어나는 사실입니다. 하나님은 이 땅에서의 우리 짧은 인생의 모든 순간을 다 아십니다(1-4절). 우리는 그분에게 소중합니다. 인생의 남아 있는 매일매일, 그리고 그 너머에 있을 삶을 기대하며 “호흡이 있는 자마다” 그분을 찬양합시다. “여호와를 찬양하십시오”(150:6).

BREATH AND BREVITY

Mom, my sisters, and I waited by Dad’s bed as his breaths became shallower and less and less frequent—until they were no more. Dad was a few days shy of eighty-nine when he slipped quietly into the life beyond where God awaited him. His departure left us with a void where he once resided and only memories and mementos to remind us of him. Yet we have the hope that one day we’ll be reunited.

We have that hope because we believe Dad is with God, who knows and loves him. When Dad breathed his first breath, God was there breathing breath into his lungs (ISAIAH 42:5). Yet even before his first and with every breath in between, God was intimately involved in each detail of Dad’s life, just as he is in yours and mine. It was God who wonderfully designed and “knit” him together in the womb (PSALM 139:13–14). And when Dad breathed his last breath, God’s Spirit was there, holding him in love and carrying him to be with Him (VV. 7–10).

The same is true for all of God’s children. Every moment of our brief life on Earth is known by Him (VV. 1–4). We’re precious to Him. With each day remaining and in anticipation of the life beyond, let’s join with “everything that has breath” to praise Him. “Praise the LORD”! (150:6). - ALYSON KIEDA

싸움에 직면해서

얼마 전 나는 친구 몇 명을 함께 만났습니다. 방에서 그들의 대화를 들으니 모두 매우 심각한 싸움에 직면해 있는 것처럼 보였습니다. 그중 두 명은 부모님들이 암과 싸우고 있고, 한 친구는 섭식 장애가 있는 아이가 있으며, 다른 친구는 만성 통증을 가지고 있고, 또 다른 친구는 큰 수술을 기다리고 있었습니다. 삼사십 대의 사람들에게는 그런 일들이 흔한 것처럼 보였습니다.

역대상 16장에는 언약궤가 다윗 성(예루살렘)으로 옮겨진 것을 이스라엘 역사에서 중요한 순간으로 기록하고 있습니다. 사무엘은 그것이 전쟁과 전쟁 사이의 평화로운 때에 일어났다고 말합니다(사무엘하 7:1). 다윗은 하나님의 임재를 상징하는 궤가 제자리에 놓였을 때 찬양으로 백성들을 이끌었습니다 (역대상 16:8-36). 그때 온 나라가 하나님의 경이로운 능력과 하나님이 약속을 지키시는 방법, 하나님이 과거에 보호해주신 것들을 함께 노래했습니다 (12-22절). 그들은 “여호와와 그의 능력을 구할지어다 항상 그의 얼굴을 찾을지어다”(11절)라고 외쳤습니다. 앞으로 더 많은 전쟁이 있을 것이기에 그렇게 절규했던 것입니다.

‘주님과 주님의 능력을 바라보십시오. 주님의 얼굴을 찾으십시오.’ 질병이나 가족 문제, 다른 싸움들과 맞닥뜨릴 때, 이렇게 말하는 것은 나쁘지 않은 조언입니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 약해져 가는 우리 힘만으로 싸우도록 내버려두시지 않았기 때문입니다. 하나님은 우리와 함께하시며 능력이 있으신 분이십니다. 하나님은 과거에도 우리를 돌보셨고 앞으로도 그렇게 하실 것입니다.

우리 하나님은 우리가 이겨내게 해주실 것입니다.

FACING THE BATTLE

Not long ago I met up with a group of friends. As I listened to the conversation, it seemed like everyone in the room was facing some significant battle. Two of us had parents fighting
cancer, one had a child with an eating disorder, another friend was experiencing chronic pain, and another was facing major surgery. It seemed a lot for a bunch of people in their thirties and forties.

First Chronicles 16 recounts a key moment in Israel’s history when the ark of the covenant was brought into the City of David (Jerusalem). Samuel tells us it happened in a moment of peace between battles (2 SAMUEL 7:1). When the ark was in place, symbolizing God’s presence, David led the people in a song (1 CHRONICLES 16:8–36). Together the nation sang of God’s wonderworking power, His promise-keeping ways, and His past protection (VV. 12–22). “Look to the Lord and his strength,” they cried out; “seek his face always” (V. 11). They’d need to, because more battles were coming.

Look to the Lord and His strength. Seek His face. That’s not bad advice to follow when illness, family concerns, and other battles confront us, because we haven’t been left to fight in our own waning energies. God is present; God is strong; He’s looked after us in the past and will do so again.

항상 감사

마르틴 린카르트는 17세기 독일의 작센에서 전쟁과 전염병을 겪으면서 30년 넘게 성직자로 섬겼습니다. 한 해에는 아내의 장례식을 포함해 4000번 이상의 장례식을 치른 적도 있었고, 때로는 음식이 너무 귀해서 가족이 굶주리기도 했습니다. 그는 절망할 수도 있었지만 계속 하나님을 굳게 믿고 끊임없이 감사를 드렸습니다. 그는 지금 널리 사랑받는 영어 찬송가 “다 감사드리세(Now Thank We All Our God.)”의 원본인 독일 찬송가 작사자로, 노랫말에서 그의 감사를 한껏 표현했습니다.

GIVING THANKS ALWAYS

In the seventeenth century, Martin Rinkart served as a clergyman in Saxony, Germany, for more than thirty years during times of war and plague. One year he conducted more than 4,000 funerals, including his wife’s, and at times food was so scarce that his family went hungry. Although he could have despaired, his faith in God remained strong and he gave thanks continually. In fact, he poured his gratitude into “Nun danket alle Gott,” the song that became the well-loved English hymn, “Now Thank We All Our God.”

Rinkart followed the example of the prophet Isaiah, who instructed God’s people to give thanks at all times, including when they’d disappointed God (ISAIAH 12:1) or when enemies oppressed them. Even then they were to exalt God’s name, making “known among the nations what he has done” (V. 4).

We might give thanks easily during harvest celebrations such as Thanksgiving, when we’re enjoying an abundant feast with friends and family. But can we express our gratitude to God in difficult times, such as when we’re missing someone from our table or when we’re struggling with our finances or when we’re locked in conflict with one close to us?

Let’s echo Pastor Rinkart, joining hearts and voices as we give praise and thanks to “the eternal God, whom earth and Heaven adore.” We can “sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things” (V. 5). - AMY BOUCHER PYE

엘살바도르는 수도 중심에 예수님의 조각상을 세워 예수님을 기리고 있습니다. 기념상은 번잡한 교차로 한가운데에 놓여 있지만 높아서 잘 보이고 “이 세상의 신성한 구세주”라는 조각상의 이름은 주님의 초자연적 존재에 대한 경외감을 전달하고 있습니다.

이 기념상의 이름은 성경에서 예수님에 대해 말한 바를 그대로 확인해줍니다(요한1서 4:14). 주님은 모든 사람에게 구원을 주시는 분이십니다. 예수님은 문화적 경계를 넘어서 나이, 교육 정도, 어느 민족, 지난 과거의 죄, 사회적 지위에 상관없이 주님을 알고 싶어 하는 신실한 사람이면 누구나 받아주십니다.

ANYONE AND EVERYONE

The country of El Salvador has honored Jesus by placing a sculpture of Him in the center of its capital city. Although the monument resides in the middle of a busy traffic circle, its height makes it easy to see, and its name—The Divine Savior of the World—communicates reverence for His supernatural status.

The monument’s name affirms what the Bible says about Jesus (1 JOHN 4:14). He’s the one who offers salvation to everyone. Jesus crosses cultural boundaries and accepts any sincere person who wants to know Him, regardless of age, education, ethnicity, past sin, or social status.

The apostle Paul traveled the ancient world telling people about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. He shared this good news with political and religious authorities, soldiers, Jews, gentiles, men, women, and children. Paul explained that a person could begin a relationship with Christ by declaring “Jesus is Lord” and believing that God had indeed raised Him from the dead (ROMANS 10:9). He said, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame. . . . Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (VV. 11, 13).

Jesus isn’t a distant image to be honored; we must have a person-to-person connection with Him through faith. May we see the value of the salvation He offers and move forward into a

칠면조를 보며 배우는 것

칠면조 무리들을 뭐라고 부르는지 아십니까? 래프터(칠면조 떼)라고 합니다. 왜 칠면조에 대해 쓰냐고요? 산장에서 주말을 보내고 막 돌아왔기 때문입니다. 매일 산장의 현관 앞을 행진하며 지나가는 칠면조 행렬이 정말 경이로웠습니다.

이전에는 이렇게 칠면조를 지켜본 적이 없었습니다. 그들은 멋있어 보이는 발톱으로 격렬하게 긁어대더니, 먹이를 찾고는 땅에 부리를 쪼아댔습니다. 나는 먹고 있나 보다 라고 짐작했습니다. (내가 처음으로 칠면조를 지켜본 것이어서 완전히 확신하지는 못했습니다.) 그 지역의 앙상한 덤불 때문에 그들이 살 수 있을 것 같아 보이지 않았지만, 여기 있는 십여 마리의 칠면조들은 먹음직스럽게 통통해 보였습니다.

잘 먹어서 통통한 칠면조들을 보면서 마태복음 6장 26절의 예수님의 말씀이 떠올랐습니다. “공중의 새를 보라 심지도 않고 거두지도 않고 창고에 모아들이지도 아니하되 너희 하늘 아버지께서 기르시나니 너희는 이것들보다 귀하지 아니하냐.” 예수님은 하찮아 보이는 새들을 공급해 기르시는 하나님을 말씀하시면서 우리를 돌보시는 하나님을 상기시켜 주십니다. 한 마리 새의 생명이 중요하다면 우리의 생명은 얼마나 더 중요할까요? 그러시고 나서 예수님은 우리가 매일의 필요를 걱정하는 것(27-31절)과, “먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하는”(33절) 삶, 곧 우리의 필요를 주님이 넉넉히 공급해 주심을 확신하는 삶을 비교하십니다. 만일 하나님이 야생 칠면조 떼를 보살필 수 있다면, 당신과 나도 분명히 돌보아주실 수 있습니다.

TAUGHT BY TURKEYS

Do you know what a group of turkeys is called? It’s called a rafter. Why am I writing about turkeys? Because I’ve just returned from a weekend at a mountain cabin. Each day, I marveled at the train of turkeys parading past our porch.

I’d never turkey-watched before. They scratched fiercely with spectacular talons. Then they hunted and pecked at the ground. Eating, I assume. (Since this was my first turkey-observation time, I wasn’t 100 percent positive.) The scrawny scrubs in the area didn’t look like they could sustain anything. Yet here were these turkeys, a dozen of them, all of which looked delectably plump.

Watching those well-fed turkeys brought to mind Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Jesus uses God’s provision for seemingly worthless birds to remind us of His care for us. If a bird’s life matters, how much more does ours? Jesus then contrasts fretting about our daily needs (VV. 27–31) with a life in which we “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (V. 33), one in which we’re confident of His rich provision for our needs. Because if God can care for that rafter of wild turkeys, He can certainly look after you and me. - ADAM R. HOLZ

그는 나이 많은 퇴역군인인데, 성격이 거친 데다 말투는 더 거칠었습니다. 어느 날 그를 많이 염려하는 친구가 그의 믿음에 대해 물어보았습니다. 그는 경멸하듯 재빨리 이렇게 말했습니다. “하나님에게는 나 같은 사람을 위한 공간은 없어.”

그의 “거친 남자” 행동을 보여주는 한 모습일 수는 있지만, 그 말은 전혀 진실이 아닙니다! 하나님은 ‘특별히’ 거칠고 죄의식에 시달리고 소외된 자들이 하나님의 공동체에 소속되고 그 안에서 살아갈 수 있도록 공간을 만들어 주십니다. 이것은 예수님이 제자들을 부르실 때 예상 밖의 선택을 하신 사역 초기부터 분명한 사실이었습니다. 먼저, 예수님은 예루살렘 사람들이 보기에 “잘못된 궤도”에 있는 갈릴리 어부들을 선택하셨습니다. 그리고 억압받는 동족을 갈취하는 직업을 가진 세리 마태를 선택하시더니, 추가로 “열심당원” 이었던 “다른” 시몬을 부르셨습니다(마가복음 3:18).

우리는 이 사람 시몬(시몬 베드로가 아님)에 대해서 아는 게 별로 없지만, 열심당원에 대해서는 잘 압니다. 열심당원들은 경멸스런 로마인들과 협력해 부자가 된 마태 같은 반역자들을 혐오했습니다. 그럼에도 아주 역설적이게도 예수님은 마태와 함께 시몬을 택해 부르시고 예수님 팀 안에서 서로 어울리게 하셨습니다.

어느 누구도 예수님께 너무 “나쁜 사람”이라고 단념하지 마십시오. 예수님은 “내가 의인을 부르러 온 것이 아니요 죄인을 불러 회개시키러 왔노라” (누가복음 5:32)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님께는 당신과 나 같이 거친 사람들을 위한 공간이 많이 있습니다.

SPACE FOR ME

He was an aging military veteran, rough-edged and given to even rougher language. One day a friend cared enough about him to inquire about his spiritual beliefs. The man’s dismissive response came quickly: “God doesn’t have space for someone like me.”

Perhaps that was just part of his “tough-guy” act, but his words couldn’t be further from the truth! God creates space especially for the rough, the guilt-ridden, and the excluded to belong and thrive in His community. This was obvious from the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, when He made some surprising choices for His disciples. First, He chose several fishermen from Galilee—the “wrong side of the tracks” from the perspective of those in Jerusalem. He also selected a tax collector, Matthew, whose profession included extorting from his oppressed countrymen. Then, for good measure, Jesus invited the “other” Simon—“the Zealot” (MARK 3:18).

We don’t know much about this Simon (he isn’t Simon Peter), but we do know about the Zealots. They hated traitors like Matthew, who got rich by collaborating with the despised Romans. Yet with divine irony, Jesus chose Simon along with Matthew, brought them together, and blended them into His team.

Don’t write anyone off as too “bad” for Jesus. After all, He said, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (LUKE 5:32). He has plenty of space for the tough cases—people like you and me. - TIM GUSTAFSON

비키는 낡은 자기 차가 수리할 수도 없을 정도로 고장이 나자 다른 차를 사기 위해 이런 저런 일을 하며 돈을 모으기 시작했습니다. 비키가 일하는 드라이브 스루 레스토랑의 단골 고객인 크리스는 어느 날 그녀가 차가 필요하다고 말하는 것을 들었습니다. 크리스는 “비키의 차 생각이 떠나지 않아 무언가를 해야만 했습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그래서 팔려고 막 내놓은 자기 아들의 중고차를 사서 광을 낸 후 비키에게 차 열쇠를 건네주었습니다. 비키는 충격을 받았습니다. 그녀는 “누가......그렇게 할 수 있을까요?”라고 놀라며 크리스에게 감사했습니다.

성경은 우리가 너그러운 손길로 살면서, 할 수 있는 한 거리낌없이 베풀고 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 진정 최선을 다하라고 권면합니다. 디모데가 말한 것처럼 “[부유한 자들에게] 선을 행하고 선한 사업을 많이 하게 하십시오” (디모데전서 6:18). 그저 여기저기서 자비로운 행동을 보여주기보다는, 늘 즐겁게 베푸는 마음으로 살아가야 합니다. 넓은 마음씨는 사람의 정상적인 생활 방식입니다. 성경은 “나누어주기를 좋아하며 너그러운 자가 되게 하라” (18절)라고 말합니다.

우리가 너그러운 열린 마음으로 살아간다면 우리의 생필품이 바닥나는 것을 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 오히려 성경은 자비로이 베푸는 가운데 “참된 생명을 취한다”(19절)라고 말합니다. 하나님과 함께하는 진정한 삶은 우리의 꽉 쥐고 있던 손을 펴서 다른 사람들에게 거리낌 없이 주는 것을 의미합니다.

AN OPEN, GENEROUS HEART

After Vicki’s old car broke down with no option for repair, she started scraping together money for another vehicle. Chris, a frequent customer of the restaurant where Vicki works at the drive-thru window, one day heard her mention she needed a car. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” Chris said. “I [had] to do something.” So he bought his son’s used car (his son had just put it up for sale), shined it up, and handed Vicki the keys. Vicki was shocked. “Who . . . does that?” she said in amazement and gratitude.

The Scriptures call us to live with open hands, giving freely as we can—providing what’s truly best for those in need. As Timothy says: “Command [those who are rich] to do good, to be rich in good deeds” (1 TIMOTHY 6:18). We don’t merely perform a benevolent act here or there, but rather live out a cheerful spirit of giving. Big-heartedness is our normal way of life. “Be generous and willing to share,” we’re told (V. 18).

As we live with an open, generous heart, we don’t need to fear running out of what we need. Rather, the Bible tells us that in our compassionate generosity, we’re taking “hold of [true] life” (V. 19). With God, genuine living means loosening our grip on what we have and giving to others freely. - WINN COLLIER

평화의 도구

1914년 제1차 세계대전이 발발했을 때, 영국의 정치가 에드워드 그레이 경은 이렇게 선언했습니다. “등불이 유럽 전역에서 꺼져가고 있습니다. 우리 생전에 그것들이 다시 켜지는 것을 보지 못할 것입니다.” 그레이의 말이 맞았습니다. “모든 전쟁을 끝내기 위한 전쟁”이 마침내 끝났을 때, 약 이천만 명이 죽었고 (그 중에 민간인이 천만 명), 이천백만 명이 부상을 당했습니다.

같은 규모나 크기는 아니지만, 우리 개인 생활에서도 대대적인 파괴가 일어날 수 있습니다. 집, 직장, 교회, 또는 이웃도 갈등이라는 어두운 기운에 덮여질 수 있습니다. 이것은 하나님이 우리를 세상에서 차이를 만드는 사람으로 부르신 이유 중의 하나이기도 합니다. 그러러면 우리는 하나님의 지혜에 의지해야 합니다. 야고보 사도는 말합니다. “오직 위로부터 난 지혜는 첫째 성결하고 다음에 화평하고 관용하고 양순하며 긍휼과 선한 열매가 가득하고 편견과 거짓이 없나니 화평하게 하는 자들은 화평으로 심어 의의 열매를 거두느니라”(야고보서 3:17-18).

화평 중재자의 역할은 그 중재하는 일의 결과 때문에 중요합니다. ‘의’ 라는 말은 “바르게 서는 것” 또는 “바른 관계”라는 뜻입니다. 화평 중재자들은 ‘관계들’을 회복시키는 데 도움을 줄 수 있습니다. 예수님이 “화평하게 하는 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 하나님의 아들이라 일컬음을 받을 것임이요”(마태복음 5:9)라고 하신 것도 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다. 하나님의 자녀들은 하나님의 지혜에 의존함으로 평화가 가장 필요한 곳에서 하나님의 평화의 도구가 될 수 있습니다.

INSTRUMENTS OF PEACE

When World War I erupted in 1914, British statesman Sir Edward Grey declared, “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” Grey was right. When the “war to end all wars” finally ended, some 20 million had been killed (10 million of them civilians) and another 21 million injured.

While not on the same scale or magnitude, devastation can also occur in our personal lives. Our home, workplace, church, or neighborhood can also be shrouded by the dark specter of conflict. This is one of the reasons God calls us to be difference-makers in the world. But to do so we must rely on His wisdom. The apostle James wrote, “The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness” (JAMES 3:17–18).

The role of peacemaker is significant because of its harvest. The word righteousness means “right standing” or “right relationship.” Peacemakers can help restore relationships. No wonder Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (MATTHEW 5:9). His children, relying on His wisdom, become instruments of His peace where it’s needed most. - BILL CROWDER

다툼에서 돌아서기

알버트 아인슈타인은 한 유명한 네덜란드 과학자의 묘지에서 헌사를 하며 그들이 벌인 과학적인 논쟁에 대해 언급하지 않았습니다. 대신, 너그러운 태도와 공정하게 사람들을 대했던 것으로 잘 알려진 사랑받던 물리학자 헨드릭 로렌쯔의 “다함없는 친절”을 회상했습니다. 아인슈타인은 말했습니다. “모든 사람들이 그를 기쁘게 따랐습니다. 왜냐하면 사람들은 그가 군림하지 않고 언제나 자신이 쓰임받도록 행동한다고 느꼈기 때문입니다.”

로렌쯔는 과학자들이 정치적인 편견을 버리고 협력해 함께 일하도록 고무시켰는데, 특히 제 1차 세계 대전 이후에 더 그랬습니다. 아인슈타인은 노벨상 수상자 동료인 그에 대해 “전쟁이 끝나기 전에도 [로렌쯔는] 화해의 일에 온전히 헌신했다.”라고 말했습니다.

화해를 위해 일하는 것은 교회에서도 모든 사람들의 목표가 되어야 합니다. 사실 어느 정도 갈등이 있는 것은 피할 수 없지만, 평화적인 해결을 위해 우리에게 주어진 역할을 담당해야 합니다. 바울은 “해가 지도록 분을 품지 말라”(에베소서 4:26)라고 썼습니다. 그는 우리가 함께 성장하기를 바라면서 이렇게 권면합니다. “무릇 더러운 말은 너희 입 밖에도 내지 말고 오직 덕을 세우는 데 소용되는 대로 선한 말을 하라”(29절).

마지막으로 바울은 말합니다. “너희는 모든 악독과 노함과 분냄과 떠드는 것과 비방하는 것을 모든 악의와 함께 버리고 서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 너희를 용서하심과 같이 하라”(31-32절). 우리가 할 수 있을 때마다 다툼에서 돌아선다면 하나님의 교회가 바로 세워지게 될 것입니다. 그렇게 할 때 우리는 참으로 하나님을 영화롭게 합니다.

TURNING FROM CONFLICT

In his graveside tribute to a famous Dutch scientist, Albert Einstein didn’t mention their scientific disputes. Instead, he recalled the “never-failing kindness” of Hendrik A. Lorentz, a beloved physicist known for his easy manner and fair treatment of others. “Everyone followed him gladly,” Einstein said, “for they felt he never set out to dominate but always simply to be of use.”

Lorentz inspired scientists to put aside political prejudice and work together, especially after World War I. “Even before the war was over,” Einstein said of his fellow Nobel Prize winner, “[Lorentz] devoted himself to the work of reconciliation.”

Working for reconciliation should be the goal of everyone in the church as well. True, some conflict is inevitable. Yet we must do our part to work for peaceful resolutions. Paul wrote, “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry” (EPHESIANS 4:26). To grow together, the apostle advised, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs” (V. 29).

Finally, said Paul, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (VV. 31–32). Turning from conflict whenever we are able helps build God’s church. 용감한 행동

존 하퍼는 여섯 살 된 딸과 함께 타이타닉 호에 탔을 때 앞으로 무슨 일이 벌어질지 전혀 알지 못했습니다. 그러나 한 가지 알고 있었다면 그가 예수님을 사랑하며 다른 사람들도 주님을 알았으면 하는 열정이 있다는 것이었습니다. 배가 빙산에 부딪히자 바로 물이 안으로 밀려들기 시작했습니다. 홀아비였던 하퍼는 어린 딸을 구명정에 태우고 나서 되도록 많은 사람들을 구하기 위해 아수라장이 된 배 안으로 달려 들어갔습니다. 그는 구명조끼를 나누어주며 계속 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “여자들과 아이들, 그리고 아직 구원받지 못한 사람들을 구명정에 태우세요.” 하퍼는 마지막 숨을 거두는 순간까지 주위에 있는 사람들에게 예수님을 전했습니다. 그는 다른 사람들을 살리기 위해 기꺼이 자기 목숨을 바쳤습니다.

VALIANT ACTIONS

John Harper had no idea what was about to unfold as he and his six-year-old daughter embarked on the Titanic. But one thing he knew: he loved Jesus and he was passionate that others know Him too. As soon as the ship hit an iceberg and water started pouring in, Harper, a widower, put his little girl on a lifeboat and headed into the chaos to save as many people as possible. As he distributed life jackets he reportedly shouted, “Let the women, children, and the unsaved into the lifeboats.” Until his last breath, Harper shared about Jesus with anyone who was around him. John willingly gave his life away so others could live.

There was One who laid down His life freely two thousand years ago so you and I can live not only in this life but for all eternity. Jesus didn’t just wake up one day and decide He would pay the penalty of death for humanity’s sin. This was His life’s mission. At one point when He was talking with the Jewish religious leaders He repeatedly acknowledged “I lay down my life” (JOHN 10:11, 15, 17, 18). He didn’t just say these words but lived them by actually dying a horrific death on the cross.
