잘못된 확신

몇 년 전 주치의가 내 건강에 대해 심각하게 말한 적이 있습니다. 나는 그의 말을 마음에 새겨 체육관에 가고 식단을 조절하기 시작했습니다. 시간이 지나면서 콜레스테롤도 체중도 줄었고 자존감은 높아졌습니다. 그런데 그때 별로 좋지 않은 버릇이 생겼습니다. 다른 사람들의 식단 조절에 대해 판단하기 시작한 것입니다. 종종 우리가 자신을 잘 평가해주는 점수 체계를 찾아 스스로 우쭐해지고 그 기준을 가지고 다른 사람들을 깎아내리는 것이 우습지 않습니까? 자신을 정당화하기 위해 자기 합리화나 죄책감 조절 방식 같이 스스로 만든 기준에 집착하는 것은 인간의 타고난 경향인 것 같습니다.

바울은 빌립보 교인들에게 그 같은 일에 대해 경고했습니다. 종교생활이나 문화적 유행에 잘 따르는 것을 자랑하고 있던 사람들에게 바울은 오히려 자신이 그런 것들을 자랑할 더 많은 이유가 있다고 말했습니다. “만일 누구든지 다른 이가 육체를 신뢰할 것이 있는 줄로 생각하면 나는 더욱 그러하리니”(3:4). 그러나 바울은 그의 혈통과 종교생활이 “그리스도를 아는 것”과 비교할 때 “배설물”이라는 것을 알고 있었습니다(8절). 오직 예수 그리스도만이 우리를 있는 그대로 사랑하시고 구원하시며 그분을 더욱 닮아갈 힘을 주십니다. 점수를 얻을 필요도 없고 점수를 기록하는 것도 불가능합니다.

자랑은 그 자체로도 나쁘지만 잘못된 확신에 근거한 자랑은 비극입니다. 복음은 우리가 잘못된 확신에서 벗어나 우리를 사랑하시고 우리를 위해 그분 자신을 주신 구주와 교제할 것을 요구하고 있습니다.

FALSE CONFIDENCE

A few years ago, my doctor gave me a stern talk about my health. I took his words to heart and began going to the gym and adjusting my diet. Over time, both my cholesterol and my weight went down, and my self-esteem went up. But then something not so good happened: I began noticing other people’s dietary choices and judging them. Isn’t it funny that often when we find a scoring system that grades us well, we use it to lift ourselves up and put others down. It seems to be an innate human tendency to cling to self-made standards in an attempt to justify ourselves— systems of self-justification and guilt-management.

Paul warned the Philippians about doing such things. Some were putting their confidence in religious performance or cultural conformity, and Paul told them he had more reason to boast of such things: “If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more” (3:4). Yet Paul knew his pedigree and performance was “garbage” compared to “knowing Christ” (V. 8). Only Jesus loves us as we are, rescues us, and gives us the power to become more like Him. No earning required; no scorekeeping possible.

Boasting is bad in itself, but a boast based on false confidence is tragic. The gospel calls us away from misplaced confidence and into communion with a Savior who loves us and gave Himself for us. - GLENN PACKIAM

할 수만 있다면......

울창한 알래스카 삼나무가 폭풍의 강한 바람에 좌우로 휘청거렸습니다. 레지는 여름의 태양으로부터 피난처를 제공하고 가족의 사생활을 보호해주었던 그 나무를 사랑했습니다. 지금 강렬한 폭풍으로 그 나무의 뿌리가 땅에서 뽑히고 있었습니다. 레지는 15세살 된 아들과 함께 나무를 구하려고 급히 달려갔습니다. 넘어지지 않게 90파운드(약 41킬로그램) 의 뼈대를 단단히 박고 손으로도 받치면서 두 모자는 나무가 넘어지지 않도록 노력했지만 역부족이었습니다.

하나님은 다윗 왕이 다른 종류의 폭풍 가운데에서 하나님께 부르짖었을 때 다윗의 힘이 되어 주셨습니다(시편 28:8). 일부 주석가들은 그의 삶이 무너져 내리고 있던 시기에 이 글을 썼다고 말합니다. 그의 아들이 반란을 일으켜 왕위를 차지하려고 했던 것입니다(사무엘하 15장). 그는 너무나 연약하고 나약해져서 하나님이 침묵하시면 자기가 죽을까 봐 몹시 두려웠습니다(시편 28:1). 그는 하나님께 “주께 부르짖을 때에 나의 간구하는 소리를 들으소서” (2절)라고 말했습니다. 다윗과 아들의 관계가 결코 나아지지 못했음에도 불구하고 하나님은 다윗에게 계속 나아갈 힘을 주셨습니다.

IF ONLY WE COULD . . .

The weeping Alaskan cedar tree whipped from side to side in the storm’s strong winds. Regie loved the tree that had not only provided shelter from the summer sun but also given her family privacy. Now the fierce storm was tearing the roots from the ground. Quickly, Regie, with her fifteen-year-old son in tow, ran to try to rescue the tree. With her hands and ninety-pound frame firmly planted against it, she and her son tried to keep it from falling over. But they weren’t strong enough.

God was King David’s strength when he called out to Him in another kind of storm (PSALM 28:8). Some commentators say he wrote this during a time when his world was falling apart. His own son rose in rebellion against him and tried to take the throne (2 SAMUEL 15). He felt so vulnerable and weak that he feared God might remain silent, and he would die (PSALM 28:1). “Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help,” he said to God (V. 2). God gave David strength to go on, even though his relationship with his son never mended.

How we long to prevent bad things from happening! If only we could. But in our weakness, God promises we can always call to Him to be our Rock (VV. 1–2). When we don’t have the strength, He’s our shepherd and will carry us forever (VV. 8–9). - ANNE CETAS

빌린 운동화

고등학교 졸업반이었던 게이브는 2018년 캘리포니아 산불 당시 집을 탈출하는 혼란 중에 그가 계속 훈련해 왔던 주 예선 크로스컨트리 경기를 놓치고 말았습니다. 이 대회에 불참하는 것은 그가 4년 동안 쌓아온 달리기 실력을 최종적으로 보여줄 주 대회에 출전할 기회를 잃는다는 것을 의미했습니다. 그런 사정을 고려해 주 체육위원회는 게이브에게 새로운 기회를 주었습니다. 게이브는 육상화가 집의 잔해 속에 있었기 때문에 “보통 신발”을 신고 경쟁 학교의 트랙에서 혼자 예선 경기를 뛰어야 했습니다. 그런데 게이브가 “달리기” 위해 나타났을 때, 놀랍게도 그의 경쟁자들이 그에게 육상화를 빌려주고 주 대회 참가에 필요한 속도를 낼 수 있도록 그와 함께 뛰어 주었습니다.

BORROWED SHOES

In the chaos of fleeing his home during the California wildfires of 2018, Gabe, a high school senior, missed the state-qualifying cross-country race for which he’d been training. Missing this meet meant he wouldn’t have the chance to compete at the state meet—the culminating event of his four-year running career. In light of the circumstances, the state athletics board gave Gabe another chance: he’d have to run a qualifying time by himself, on a rival high school’s track, in “street shoes” because his running shoes were in the charred rubble of his home. When he showed up to “race,” Gabe was surprised by his competitors who had come to supply him with proper shoes and to run alongside him to ensure he kept the pace necessary to be entered in the state meet.

Gabe’s opponents had no obligation to help him. They could have given into their natural desires to look out for themselves (GALATIANS 5:13); doing so might have improved their own odds of winning. But Paul urges us to display the fruit of the Spirit in our lives—to “serve one another humbly in love” and to demonstrate “kindness” and “goodness” (VV. 13, 22). When we lean on the Spirit to help us not act on our natural instincts, we’re better able to love those around us. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

나는 학생들을 인도하는 성인으로서 학생들의 장애물 코스 현장 학습을 준비했습니다. 우리는 학생들에게 안전장비를 차고 8피트(약 2.4미터) 높이의 벽을 오르는 방법을 설명했습니다. 먼저 끝낸 학생들은 벽을 오르는 학생들에게 안전띠를 믿고 아래를 보지 말고 계속 앞으로 올라가라고 격려했습니다. 한 여학생의 허리에 벨트와 버클을 조이고 있는데 그 학생은 장벽을 바라보며 말했습니다. “난 도저히 못해요.” 우리는 안전띠가 아주 튼튼하다고 일러주면서 용기를 주었고, 그 여학생이 마침내 벽을 타고 올라가 꼭대기에 섰을 때 크게 환호했습니다.

NO IMPOSSIBLE OBSTACLES

As an adult leader, I arranged a student field trip to an obstacle course. We instructed students to slip into safety gear and scale an eight-foot wall. Those who went first encouraged
each climber to trust the harness and keep moving forward without looking down. One of our students stared at the barrier as we secured belts and buckles around her waist. “There’s no way I can do this,” she said. Affirming the strength of her harness, we encouraged her and cheered when she climbed up the wall and stepped onto the high platform.

When we face problems that seem impossible to conquer, fears and insecurities can cause doubts. The assurance of God’s unchanging might, goodness, and faithfulness creates a strong harness of trust. This confident assurance fueled the courage of the Old Testament saints, who demonstrated that faith trumps our need to know every detail of God’s plan (HEBREWS 11:1–13, 39). With conviction, we seek God earnestly, often standing alone when we trust Him. We can adjust the way we approach our challenges by viewing our circumstances with an eternal perspective— knowing our trials are only temporary (VV. 13–16).

Focusing on the steep climbs in life can prevent us from believing that God will bring us through. But knowing He’s with us, we can harness our uncertainties by faith as we trust God to help us overcome obstacles that once seemed impossible. - XOCHITL DIXON

스페인의 안디야에서 일어난 산불은 50,000 에이커(약 200 평방킬로미터) 에 가까운 삼림 지대를 불태웠습니다. 그러나 그 황폐해진 가운데서도 1,000여 그루의 밝은 녹색의 편백 나무들이 여전히 남아 있었습니다. 그 나무의 수분을 유지하는 능력이 그들로 불 가운데서도 안전히 견뎌내게 한 것입니다.

바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕 통치 기간에 한 작은 무리의 친구들도 왕의 분노의 불길을 견뎌냈습니다. 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고는 느부갓네살이 만든 신상에 예배하기를 거부하면서 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시리이다”(다니엘 3:17). 군주는 격분해 그 풀무불을 평소보다 일곱 배나 더 뜨겁게 했습니다 (19절).

왕의 명령을 따라 그 친구들을 불속으로 던져 넣은 병사들이 오히려 불길에 휩싸여 타버렸지만, 구경꾼들은 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 “결박되지 않은 채 상하지도 아니하고” 불 가운데로 다니는 것을 보았습니다. 그 풀무불 안에는 어떤 다른 사람도 있었습니다. 그 네 번째 사람은 “신들의 아들과 같아”(25절) 보였습니다. 많은 학자들은 이것이 성육신하기 이전의 예수님의 모습이었다고 믿습니다.

예수님은 우리가 위협을 받고 시련을 당할 때 우리와 함께 하십니다. 압제에 굴복하라는 충동을 강하게 받는 순간에도 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 우리는 하나님이 언제, 어떻게 우리를 도와주실지 항상 알지는 못해도 하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 압니다. 하나님은 우리에게 그분께 계속 충실할 수 있는 힘을 주셔서 모든 “불길”을 견디게 해주실 것입니다.

INSIDE THE FIRE

A wildfire in Andilla, Spain, scorched nearly 50,000 acres of woodland. However, in the middle of the devastation, a group of nearly 1,000 bright green cypress trees remained standing. The trees’ ability to retain water had allowed them to safely endure the fire.

During King Nebuchadnezzar’s reign in Babylon, a small cluster of friends survived the flames of the king’s wrath. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship a statue Nebuchadnezzar had created, and they told him, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it” (DANIEL 3:17). Infuriated, the monarch cranked up the heat seven times hotter than normal (V. 19).

The soldiers who carried out the king’s orders and tossed the friends into the blaze were burned up, yet onlookers watched Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walk around inside the flames “unbound and unharmed.” Someone else was in the furnace as well—a fourth man who looked “like a son of the gods” (V. 25). Many scholars believe this was a preincarnate appearance of Jesus.

Jesus is with us when we face intimidation and trials. In the moments when we’re urged to give in to pressure, we don’t have to be afraid. We may not always know how or when God will help us, but we know He’s with us. He’ll give us the strength to stay faithful to Him through every “fire” we endure. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

하나님이 말씀하실 때

성경 번역가인 릴리가 본국으로 돌아가는 길에 공항에서 억류되었습니다. 공항 관리들이 릴리의 휴대폰을 검색하다가 녹음된 신약성경이 들어있는 것을 발견하고, 휴대폰을 압수한 후 두 시간 동안 그녀를 심문했습니다. 심문 도중에 그 성경 애플리케이션을 열어보라고 했는데, 마침 마태복음 7:1-2이 흘러나왔습니다. “비판을 받지 아니하려거든 비판하지 말라 너희가 비판하는 그 비판으로 너희가 비판을 받을 것이요 너희가 헤아리는 그 헤아림으로 너희가 헤아림을 받을 것이니라.” 자신의 언어로 이 말씀을 듣게 된 한 관리의 얼굴이 창백해졌습니다. 그 후 릴리는 더 이상의 아무런 조치 없이 풀려났습니다.

그 공항 관리의 마음에 무슨 일이 일어났는지는 모르지만, 우리는 “[하나님의] 입에서 나가는 말”이 그분이 원하시는 바를 이루는 것을 압니다 (이사야 55:11). 이사야는 유배당한 하나님의 백성들에게 이 희망의 말들을 예언하면서, 비와 눈이 땅을 적셔 싹이 나고 소출이 나게 하는 것처럼 “[하나님의] 입에서 나오는” 말씀이 그분의 목적을 이룬다는 것을 확신시켜 주었습니다(10-11절).

위의 구절을 읽고 하나님에 대한 신뢰를 더욱 북돋우시기 바랍니다. 그리고 공항 관리들과 마주한 릴리의 경우와 같은 단호한 상황에 맞닥뜨릴 때, 하나님이 일하고 계시다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 그 최종 결과를 볼 수 없을 때라도 말입니다.

WHEN GOD SPEAKS

Lily, a Bible translator, was flying home to her country when she was detained at the airport. Her mobile phone was searched, and when the officials found an audio copy of the New Testament on it, they confiscated the phone and questioned her for two hours. At one point they asked her to play the Scripture app, which happened to be set at Matthew 7:1–2: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Hearing these words in his own language, one of the officers turned pale. Later, she was released and no further action was taken.

We don’t know what happened in that official’s heart at the airport, but we know that the “word that goes out from [God’s] mouth” accomplishes what He desires (ISAIAH 55:11). Isaiah prophesied these words of hope to God’s people in exile, assuring them that even as the rain and snow make the earth bud and grow, so too what goes “out from [His] mouth” achieves His purposes (VV. 10–11).

We can read this passage to bolster our confidence in God. When we’re facing unyielding circumstances, such as Lily with the airport officials, may we trust that God is working—even when we don’t see the final outcome. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

먼 길

자신의 동료들이 하나 둘 승진하자, 벤자민은 약간 부러움을 느끼지 않을 수 없었습니다. “어떻게 아직 매니저가 안 된거야? 너는 그럴 자격이 있는데.” 친구들이 말했습니다. 그러나 벤은 자신의 경력을 하나님께 맡기기로 했습니다. 그는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “만약 이것이 나를 위한 하나님의 계획이라면 그냥 내 일을 열심히 할 거야.”

가장 짧은 길이 항상 가장 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 때로 우리의 경력이든 노력이든, 하나님은 우리 인생에서 더 먼 길을 가게 하셔서 우리가 앞으로의 삶의 여정에 더 잘 준비할 수 있게 하십니다. 일이 빨리 진행되지 않는 것처럼 보일 때, 우리를 인도하시고 안내해주시는 하나님을 신뢰해야 합니다.

THE LONG WAY

As his peers were promoted one by one, Benjamin couldn’t help but feel a little envious. “How come you’re not a manager yet? You deserve it,” friends told him. But Ben decided to leave his career to God. “If this is God’s plan for me, I’ll just do my job well,” he replied.

Several years later, Ben was finally promoted. By then, his added experience enabled him to do his job confidently and won him the respect of subordinates. Some of his peers, meanwhile, were still struggling with their supervisory responsibilities, as they had been promoted before they were ready. Ben realized God had taken him the “long way around” so that he would be better prepared for his role.

When God led the Israelites out of Egypt (EXODUS 13:17–18), He chose a longer way because the “shortcut” to Canaan was fraught with risk. The longer journey, note Bible commentators, also gave them more time to strengthen themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually for subsequent battles.

The shortest way isn’t always the best. Sometimes God lets us take the longer route in life, whether it’s in our career or other endeavors, so that we’ll be better prepared for the journey ahead. When things don’t seem to happen quickly enough, we can trust in God—the One who leads and guides us. - LESLIE KOH

귀향

월터 딕슨은 5일간 신혼여행을 다녀온 후에 바로 한국전쟁에 참전하기 위해 배에 올랐습니다. 1년도 채 지나지 않아 부대원들은 전장에서 그의 부인이 보낸 편지가 주머니에 들어있는 딕슨의 외투를 발견했습니다. 군 관계자는 그의 젊은 아내에게 남편이 전쟁 중에 전사했다고 알려주었습니다. 하지만 실제로 딕슨은 살아 있었고, 전쟁 포로로 2년 반을 지냈습니다. 깨어 있는 순간마다 그는 집으로 돌아갈 계획을 세웠습니다. 딕슨은 다섯 번이나 탈출했지만 그때마다 다시 체포되었습니다. 마침내 그가 자유를 얻어 집으로 돌아왔을 때의 그 충격을 상상해 보십시오!

하나님의 백성들은 포로가 되어 멀리 유배되고 집을 그리워하는 것이 어떤 것인지를 알고 있었습니다. 그들은 하나님을 거역해서 유배되었습니다. 그들은 아침마다 돌아가길 열망하며 잠을 깼지만, 그들 스스로 구원할 방법이 없었습니다. 그런데 감사하게도 하나님이 그들을 잊지 않겠다고 약속하셨습니다. “내가 그들을 긍휼히 여김으로 그들이 돌아오게 하리라” (스가랴 10:6). 그들의 인내가 아닌 하나님의 자비 때문에, 하나님은 그 백성들의 고향을 향한 끈질긴 갈망을 이루어주십니다. “내가 그들을 향하여 휘파람을 불어......그들이 돌아올지라”(8-9절).

우리의 잘못된 결정이나 우리가 어찌할 수 없는 어려움 때문에 우리가 유배되었다는 느낌을 가질 수 있습니다. 그 어떤 경우이든, 하나님은 우리를 잊지 않으십니다. 하나님은 우리의 소망을 아시고 우리를 부르실 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 응답하면, 하나님께로, 곧 집으로 돌아가게 될 것입니다.

RETURNING HOME

Walter Dixon had five days to honeymoon before he shipped off to the Korean War. Less than a year later, troops found Dixon’s jacket on the battlefield, with letters from his wife stuffed in the pockets. Military officials informed his young wife that her husband had been killed in action. Actually, Dixon was alive and spent the next 2.5 years as a POW. Every waking hour, he plotted to get home. Dixon escaped five times but was always recaptured. Finally, he was set free. You can imagine the shock when he returned home!

God’s people knew what it was to be captured, moved far away, and to long for home. Due to their rebellion against God, they were exiles. They woke each morning yearning to return, but they had no way to rescue themselves. Thankfully, God promised He’d not forgotten them. “I will restore them because I have compassion on them” (ZECHARIAH 10:6). He would meet the people’s relentless ache for home, not because of their perseverance, but because of His mercy: “I will signal for them . . . and they will return” (VV. 8–9).

Our sense of exile may come because of our bad decisions or because of hardships beyond our control. Either way, God hasn’t forgotten us. He knows our desire and will call to us. And if we’ll answer, we’ll find ourselves returning to Him—returning home. - WINN COLLIER

용서가 주는 승리

약물 남용과 성적 죄악 가운데에서 허우적대고 있던 맥은 절망스러웠습니다. 소중하게 여겼던 인간관계들은 혼란스러워졌고, 그의 양심은 그를 사정없이 때리고 있었습니다. 이런 고통 가운데 그는 자신에 관한 일이 교회에 알려지기 전에 목사님에게 상담을 청했습니다. 그는 자신의 복잡한 상황을 솔직하게 털어놓고 하나님의 자비와 용서에 대해 듣는 가운데 안도할 수 있었습니다.

THE TRIUMPH OF FORGIVENESS

Mack, having struggled with drug abuse and sexual sin, was desperate. Relationships he valued were in disarray, and his conscience was beating him up. In his misery, he found himself unannounced at a church asking to speak with a pastor. There he found relief in sharing his complicated story and in hearing about God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Psalm 32 is believed to have been composed by David after his sexual sin. He compounded his wrongdoing by devising a sinister strategy that resulted in the death of the woman’s husband (SEE 2 SAMUEL 11–12). While these ugly incidents were behind him, the effects of his actions remained. Psalm 32:3–4 describes the deep struggles he experienced before he acknowledged the ugliness of his deeds; the gnawing effects of unconfessed sin were undeniable. What brought relief? Relief began with confession to God and accepting the forgiveness He offers (V. 5).

What a great place for us to start—at the place of God’s mercy— when we say or do things that cause hurt and harm to ourselves and others. The guilt of our sin need not be permanent. There’s One whose arms are open wide to receive us when we acknowledge our wrongs and seek His forgiveness. We can join the chorus of those who sing, “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered” (V. 1). - ARTHUR JACKSON

자기 역할에 충실함

두 손녀가 ‘이상한 나라의 앨리스’ 뮤지컬 공연 오디션에 참가했을 때, 자기들이 주연 역할을 맡기를 바랐습니다. 매기는 어린 앨리스 역할을, 케이티는 마틸다 역할을 원했습니다. 그러나 아이들에게 돌아온 배역은 ‘꽃들’이었습니다. 브로드웨이 진출의 꿈은 날아갔습니다.

그러나 딸은 손녀들이 “주연을 맡게 된 친구들 때문에 신이 나 있으며, 주인공에 뽑힌 친구들을 응원하고 그들의 기쁨을 함께 나누는 즐거움이 훨씬 더 커 보인다”고 했습니다.

이것은 정말 그리스도의 몸 된 교회에서 우리가 서로 가져야 할 교제를 잘 보여주는 그림이 아닐까요? 모든 지역교회에는 핵심 역할이라고 여겨지는 것들이 있습니다. 하지만 교회에는 꽃들처럼 그다지 이목을 끌지 못하지만 없어서는 안 되는 역할들도 필요합니다. 우리가 원하는 역할을 다른 사람들이 맡는다 하더라도, 우리는 하나님이 주신 역할을 열정적으로 맡으면서 핵심 역할을 맡은 사람들을 격려하는 쪽을 택할 수 있습니다.

사실, 다른 사람들을 돕고 격려하는 것은 하나님을 향한 사랑을 보여주는 한 방법입니다. 히브리서 6장 10절은 말합니다. “하나님은......너희 행위와 그의 이름을 위하여 나타낸 사랑으로 이미 성도를 섬긴 것과 이제도 섬기고 있는 것을 잊어버리지 아니하시느니라.” 그리고 하나님이 주신 은사 중 중요하지 않은 것은 없습니다. “각각 은사를 받은 대로 하나님의 여러 가지 은혜를 맡은 선한 청지기같이 서로 봉사하라”(베드로전서 4:10).

하나님의 영광을 위해 하나님께서 주신 은사를 열심히 사용하며 서로를 격려하는 사람들이 모인 교회를 상상해 보십시오(히브리서 6:10). 정말 기쁜 상상이 아닐 수 없습니다!

DOING OUR ROLE

When two of my grandchildren tried out for the musical Alice in Wonderland Jr., their hearts were set on getting leading roles. Maggie wanted to be young Alice, and Katie thought Mathilda would be a good role. But they were chosen to be flowers. Not exactly a ticket to Broadway.

Yet my daughter said the girls were “excited for their friends who got the [leading roles]. Their joy seemed greater cheering for their friends and sharing in their excitement.”

What a picture of how our interactions with each other in the body of Christ should look! Every local church has what might be considered key roles. But it also needs the flowers—the ones who do vital but not-so-high-profile work. If others get roles we desire, may we choose to encourage them even as we passionately fulfill the roles God has given us.

In fact, helping and encouraging others is a way to show love for Him. Hebrews 6:10 says, “[God] will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people.” And no gift from His hand is unimportant: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace” (1 PETER 4:10).

Imagine a church of encouragers diligently using their God-given gifts to His honor (HEBREWS 6:10). That makes for joy! - DAVE BRANON
