사람들은 잊어버린다

한 여인이 담임목사의 설교에 반복이 심한 것에 불평하며 “왜 자꾸 반복하세요?”라고 물었습니다. 그러자 목사님은 이렇게 대답했습니다. “사람들이 잊기 때문이지요.”

우리가 잊어버리는 데는 많은 이유가 있습니다. 시간이 지나서, 나이가 들어서, 아니면 그냥 너무 바빠서 그러기도 합니다. 우리는 비밀번호, 사람들의 이름, 심지어 차를 어디에 주차했는지도 잊어버립니다. 내 남편은 말합니다. “내 머리에 집어넣을 수 있는 데에는 한계가 있어. 새로운 걸 기억하기 위해선 다른 것을 지워야 해.”

그 목사님 말처럼 사람들은 잊어버립니다. 그래서 우리는 종종 하나님이 우리를 위해 하신 일들을 상기시킬 필요가 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들도 비슷한 경향을 보였습니다. 광야에서 수많은 기적을 보고도 그들은 여전히 하나님의 돌보심을 상기시킬 필요가 있었습니다. 신명기 8장에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 광야에서 배고픔을 겪었을 때 날마다 놀라운 기적의 음식 만나를 공급하셨음을 기억하게 하셨습니다. 또한 그들의 의복이 해어지지 않게 하셨으며, 뱀과 전갈이 있는 광야를 무사히 지나게 하셨고, 반석에서 물을 공급해주셨습니다. 그들은 자신들이 하나님의 돌보심과 공급하심에 전적으로 의존하고 있음을 깨닫고 겸손을 배웠습니다(2-4, 15-18절).

하나님의 신실하심은 “대대에 미칩니다”(시편 100:5). 우리가 잊어버릴 때마다 하나님이 우리의 기도에 어떻게 응답하셨는지 생각하고, 그럼으로써 하나님의 선하심과 신실한 약속들을 일깨울 수 있습니다.

PEOPLE FORGET

A woman complained to her pastor that she’d noticed a lot of repetition in his sermons. “Why do you do that?” she queried. The preacher replied, “People forget.”

There are lots of reasons we forget—the passage of time, growing older, or just being too busy. We forget passwords, names of people, or even where we parked our car. My husband says, “There’s only so much I can fit in my brain. I have to delete something before I can remember something new.”

The preacher was right. People forget. So we often need reminders to help us remember what God has done for us. The Israelites had a similar tendency. Even with the many miracles they’d seen, they still needed to be reminded of His care for them. In Deuteronomy 8, God reminded the Israelites that He’d allowed them to experience hunger in the wilderness, but then provided an amazing superfood for them every day—manna. He supplied clothing that never wore out. He led them through a wilderness of snakes and scorpions and provided water from a rock. They’d learned humility, as they realized how totally dependent they were on God’s care and provision (VV. 2–4, 15–18).

God’s faithfulness “continues through all generations” (PSALM 100:5). Whenever we find ourselves forgetting, we can think about the ways He’s answered our prayers, and that reminds us of His goodness and faithful promises. - CINDY HESS KASPER

결과는 하나님께 맡기라

여러 해 전에 어느 대학의 남학생 동아리 모임에서 말씀을 전해달라는 부탁을 받았습니다. 그 단체는 분위기가 산만하기로 유명했기에 나는 한 친구를 도우미로 데리고 갔습니다. 학생들은 바로 얼마 전에 미식축구대회에서 우승해서 축제 분위기였고, 저녁시간은 그야말로 난장판이었습니다! 마침내 동아리의 대표가 우리를 소개했습니다. “여기 계시는 두 분이 하나님에 대해 이야기하고 싶다고 하십니다.”

나는 떨리는 다리로 일어나 하나님의 사랑에 대해 이야기하기 시작했습니다. 좌중은 점차 조용해졌고, 온 시선이 집중되었습니다. 이후에 활발하고 솔직한 질의응답 시간이 이어졌습니다. 얼마 후 우리는 그 동아리에서 성경공부를 시작하게 되었고, 그 후 수년간 많은 사람이 예수님을 믿어 구원을 얻었습니다.

나는 그날처럼 “사탄이 하늘로부터 번개 같이 떨어지는 것을 본”(누가복음 10:18) 경험을 여러 번 하기도 했지만, 때로는 내 자신이 떨어져 코가 납작해지는 경험을 하기도 했습니다.

누가복음 10장에는 예수님의 제자들이 전도 여행에서 큰 성공을 거두고 돌아와 예수님께 보고하는 이야기가 나옵니다. 많은 사람들이 하나님 나라로 초대되었고, 귀신들이 쫓겨가며, 사람들이 고침 받았습니다. 제자들은 대단히 고무되었습니다! 그때 예수님은 “사탄이 하늘로부터 번개 같이 떨어지는 것을 내가 보았다”라고 말씀하시고 나서 이렇게 경고하셨습니다. “귀신들이 너희에게 항복하는 것으로 기뻐하지 말고 너희 이름이 하늘에 기록된 것으로 기뻐하라”(20절).

우리는 성공을 기뻐하지만, 실패하는 듯 보일 때는 절망하기도 합니다. 하지만, 하나님이 명하신 일을 계속하고 결과를 하나님께 맡기십시오. 당신의 이름이 하나님의 책에 기록되어 있습니다!

LEAVE THE RESULTS TO GOD

Years ago, I was invited to speak to the residents of a university’s fraternity house. They had a reputation for rowdiness so I brought along a friend for support. They were in a celebratory mood, having just won a football championship. At dinner, chaos reigned! Eventually, the president of the house announced: “There are two guys here that want to talk about God.”

I rose on rubbery legs and began to tell them of God’s love, and the room grew still. There was rapt attention. A vigorous and honest Q & A followed. Later, we started a Bible study there and in subsequent years many received salvation in Jesus.

I recall many days like that when I “saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven” (LUKE 10:18), but there were other days when it was I who fell—flat on my face.

Luke 10 tells of Jesus’ disciples returning from a mission to report great success. Many had been brought into the kingdom, demons were put to flight, and people were healed. The disciples were pumped! Jesus replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” But then He issued a caveat: “Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (V. 20).

We delight in success. But we may despair when we seem to fail. Keep doing what God has called you to do—and leave the results to Him. He has your name in His book! - DAVID H. ROPER

가장 달콤한 수확

우리가 집을 사서 이사했을 때 이미 뿌리를 잘 내린 포도나무가 그 집에 있었습니다. 원예에 초보인 우리 가족은 많은 시간을 들여서 가지치기와 물주기, 포도나무 재배에 대해 공부했습니다. 처음 포도 수확을 하게 되었을 때 포도 한 알을 따서 입에 넣어보았습니다. 그런데 실망스럽게도 맛도 없고 신 맛뿐이었습니다.

그렇게 애를 써서 포도나무를 가꿨는데도 결국은 실망스럽게 쓴 맛의 포도를 수확하고 보니 이사야 5장 말씀이 떠올랐습니다. 거기에서 우리는 이스라엘 민족에 대한 하나님의 관계를 묘사한 비유를 읽을 수 있습니다. 농부로 비유된 하나님은 언덕의 돌을 제거하시고, 극상품의 포도나무를 심고, 포도나무를 보호하려고 망대를 세우고, 수고의 열매를 즐기기 위해 술틀도 준비하셨습니다(이사야 5:1-2). 그런데 실망스럽게도, 이스라엘을 상징하는 포도원에는 이기심과 불의와 압제라는 쓴 맛의 들포도가 열렸습니다(7절). 결국 하나님은 어쩔 수 없이 언젠가 좋은 수확을 맺을 한 그루터기만 남기고 포도원을 없애버리셨습니다.

요한복음에서 예수님은 포도원 이야기를 다시 꺼내시며 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지라 그가 내 안에, 내가 그 안에 거하면 사람이 열매를 많이 맺나니”(요한복음 15:5). 이사야서와 병행되는 이 이미지에서, 예수님은 믿는 자들을 포도나무이신 주님에게 연결된 가지로 그리고 있습니다. 이제 우리가 기도하는 마음으로 성령님께 의지해 예수님과 연결되어 있을 때, 우리는 가장 달콤한 열매, 곧 사랑을 수확할 수 있는 영적 자양분에 직접 닿을 수 있습니다.

THE SWEETEST HARVEST

When we purchased our home, we inherited an established grapevine. As gardening novices, my family invested considerable time learning how to prune, water, and care for it. When our first harvest came, I popped a grape from the vine into my mouth—only to be disappointed with an unpleasant, sour taste.

The frustration I felt about painstakingly tending a grapevine, only to have a bitter harvest, echoes the tone of Isaiah 5. There we read an allegory of God’s relationship to the nation of Israel. God, pictured as a farmer, had cleared the hillside of debris, planted good vines, built a watchtower for protection, and crafted a press to enjoy the results of His harvest (ISAIAH 5:1–2). To the farmer’s dismay, the vineyard, representing Israel, produced sour-tasting grapes of selfishness, injustice, and oppression (V. 7). Eventually, God reluctantly destroyed the vineyard while saving a remnant of vines that someday would produce a good harvest.

In the gospel of John, Jesus revisits the vineyard illustration, saying, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit” (JOHN 15:5). In this parallel imagery, Jesus pictures believers in Him as grapevine branches connected to Him, the main vine. Now, as we remain connected to Jesus through prayerful reliance on His Spirit, we have direct access to the spiritual nourishment that will produce the sweetest fruit of all, love. - LISA M. SAMRA

이 집을 헐라

미시간 주의 폰티악에 있는 철거 전문 회사가 허물지 않아야 할 집을 불도저로 밀어버렸습니다. 조사단은 철거 대상 주택의 소유자가 자기 집이 철거되지 않도록 이웃집에 자신의 주소를 붙여 두었기 때문이라고 생각합니다.

예수님은 이와 상반된 일을 하셨습니다. 주님은 다른 사람들을 위해 자신의 “집”을 허무는 사명을 수행하셨습니다. 예수님의 제자들을 포함한 모든 사람들이 얼마나 받아들이기 힘들었을지 그 장면을 상상해보십시오. 예수님이 “이 성전을 헐라 내가 사흘 동안에 일으키리라”(요한복음 2:19)라고 말씀하시며 종교지도자들에게 도전했을 때, 제자들이 놀라 서로 쳐다보는 장면을 그려보십시오. 종교지도자들은 격분해서 쏘아붙였습니다. “이 성전은 사십육 년 동안에 지었거늘 네가 삼 일 동안에 일으키겠느냐”(20절). 예수님은 성전 된 자기 몸을 가리켜 말씀하신 것이지만(21절) 그들은 그것을 깨닫지 못했던 것입니다.

하나님은 언제나 우리 마음을 우리 자신보다 훨씬 더 잘 알고 계시기 때문에 주님이 행하시는 표적을 보고 믿는 사람들에게조차 그분의 계획을 온전히 알려주지 않으셨습니다(23-25절). 그래서 하나님은 지금과 같이 우리에게 직접 말씀하셔도 다 이해하지 못할 예수님의 말씀을 통해 그분의 사랑과 선하심을 조금씩 드러내신 것입니다.

DESTROY THIS HOUSE

In Pontiac, Michigan, a demolition company bulldozed the wrong building. Investigators believe that the owner of a house scheduled to be demolished nailed the numbers of his own address to a neighbor’s house to avoid demolition.

Jesus did the opposite. He was on a mission to let his own “house” be torn down for the sake of others. Imagine the scene and how confused everyone must have been, including Jesus’ own disciples. Picture them eyeing one another as He challenged the religious leaders: “Destroy this temple,” Christ said, “and I will raise it again in three days” (JOHN 2:19). The leaders retorted indignantly, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” (V. 20). But Jesus knew He was referring to the temple of His own body (V. 21). They didn’t.

They didn’t understand He had come to show that the harm we do to ourselves and to one another would ultimately fall on Him. He would atone for it.

God has always known our hearts far better than we do. So He didn’t entrust the fullness of His plans even to those who saw His miracles and believed in Him (VV. 23–25). Then as now He was slowly revealing the love and goodness in Jesus’ words that we couldn’t understand even if He told us. - MART DEHAAN

목적 있는 쉼

라메쉬는 사람들에게 예수님에 대해 말하기를 좋아합니다. 동료들에게 담대하게 예수님에 대해 말하며, 매달 한 번씩은 주말에 고향을 찾아가 집집마다 다니며 복음을 전합니다. 그의 열정은 대단합니다. 특히 휴식을 취하며 편히 쉬는 시간을 가지는 것에 대한 가치를 알게 된 이후부터 더 그렇습니다.

라메쉬는 주말과 저녁 시간 대부분을 복음을 전하면서 보냈습니다. 아내와 아이들은 그가 나가 있을 때는 그를 보고 싶어 했고, 집에 있을 때는 지쳐 있는 그를 보았습니다. 그는 대화에 할애하는 시간조차 분 단위로 계산해야 했습니다. 게임이나 일상적인 대화를 즐길 수도 없었습니다. 라메쉬는 너무 빡빡하게 시간에 얽매여 지냈습니다.

결국 아내의 솔직한 말과 친구들의 충고, 그리고 그냥 지나칠 수도 있는 평범한 성경 구절 속에서 균형 잡히지 못한 자신의 모습을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 잠언 30장은 개미와 너구리, 메뚜기같이 하찮은 것들에 대해 이야기합니다. 어떻게 손으로 잡을 수 있는 도마뱀이 왕궁에 있는지(28절) 놀랍기까지 합니다.

라메쉬는 그런 평범한 것들이 어떻게 성경에 들어있는지 궁금했습니다. 도마뱀을 관찰하려면 꽤 시간을 들여야 합니다. 어떤 사람이 왕궁 안에서 도마뱀이 다니는 모습을 보고 ‘신기하게 생각하여’ 가만히 멈추어 좀 더 관찰했을 것입니다. 어쩌면 하나님이 우리에게 일과 휴식 사이에 균형을 잡게 하시려고 그런 하찮은 것을 말씀 속에 포함시키셨는지도 모르겠습니다. 우리는 도마뱀에 대해 생각해보고 아이들과 같이 잡으면서 가족과 친구들과 함께 단순히 휴식을 취할 시간들이 필요합니다. 하나님께서 언제 일하고 섬기고 쉬어야 할지 알 수 있는 지혜를 주시기를 간구합니다.

RELAXING WITH PURPOSE

Ramesh loves to tell others about Jesus. He boldly speaks with coworkers, and one weekend each month returns to his village to evangelize from house to house. His enthusiasm is contagious—especially since he’s learned the value of taking time to rest and relax.

Ramesh used to spend every weekend and most evenings proclaiming the gospel. His wife and children missed him when he was out, and they found him exhausting when he was around. He needed to make every minute and conversation count. He couldn’t enjoy games or small talk. Ramesh was wound too tight.

He was awakened to his imbalance by the honest words of his wife, the counsel of friends, and somewhat obscure passages of Scripture. Proverbs 30 mentions trivial things, such as ants, roosters, and locusts. It marvels how “a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces” (V. 28).

Ramesh wondered how something so mundane made it into the Bible. Observing lizards required significant downtime. Someone saw a lizard darting around the palace and thought that’s interesting, and paused to watch some more. Perhaps God included it in His Word to remind us to balance work with rest. We need hours to daydream about lizards, catch one with our kids, and simply relax with family and friends. May God give us wisdom to know when to work, serve, and relax! - MIKE WITTMER

어떤 이들은 그를 “나무와 대화하는 사람”이라고 부릅니다. 사실 토니 리나우도는 월드비전 호주 지부의 나무 심는 사람입니다. 그는 30년 동안 아프리카 대륙 사하라 남쪽 사헬 지대의 삼림 벌채를 막기 위해 싸우며 예수님을 전해온 선교사이자 농업경제학자입니다.

자라지 않는 “관목”이 사실상 수면 상태의 나무라는 것을 알게 되면서, 리나우도는 가지를 치고, 돌보고, 물을 주기 시작했습니다. 그의 사역은 수십 만 명의 농부들에게 감명을 주었고, 농부들 스스로 삼림을 회복시키고 토지의 황폐화를 돌이켜 망해가던 농촌을 살리는 계기를 제공했습니다. 예를 들어, 니제르의 농부들은 작황과 수입이 두 배로 늘었고, 매해 250만 명분의 식량을 추가로 공급할 수 있게 되었습니다.

농업의 창조자이신 예수님도 요한복음 15장에서 이와 비슷한 농경술에 관한 언급을 하셨습니다. “나는 참 포도나무요 내 아버지는 농부라 무릇 내게 붙어 있어 열매를 맺지 아니하는 가지는 아버지께서 그것을 제거해 버리시고 무릇 열매를 맺는 가지는 더 열매를 맺게 하려 하여 그것을 깨끗하게 하시느니라”(1-2절).

날마다 하나님의 돌봄이 없으면 우리의 영혼은 황폐해지고 메말라갑니다. 하지만 하나님의 율법을 주야로 묵상하며 그것을 즐거워할 때, 우리는 “시냇가에 심은 나무”(시편 1:3)와 같습니다. 우리의 잎사귀가 “마르지 아니함 같고” “[우리가] 하는 모든 일이 다 형통하게”(3절) 될 것입니다. 주님 안에서 심겨지고 가지 쳐질 때, 우리는 회복되어 번성해가는 늘 푸른 나무가 됩니다.

THE TREE WHISPERER

Some call him the “tree whisperer.” Tony Rinaudo is, in fact, World Vision Australia’s tree maker. He’s a missionary and agronomist engaged in a thirty-year effort to share Jesus by combating deforestation across Africa’s Sahel, south of the Sahara.

Realizing stunted “shrubs” were actually dormant trees, Rinaudo started pruning, tending, and watering them. His work inspired hundreds of thousands of farmers to save their failing farms by restoring nearby forests, reversing soil erosion. Farmers in Niger, for example, have doubled their crops and their income, providing food for an additional 2.5 million people per year.

In John 15, Jesus, the creator of agriculture, referred to similar farming tactics when He said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful” (VV. 1–2).

Without the daily tending of God, our souls grow barren and dry. When we delight in His law, however, meditating on it day and night, we are “like a tree planted by streams of water” (PSALM 1:3). Our leaves will “not wither” and “whatever [we] do prospers” (V. 3). Pruned and planted in Him, we’re evergreen—revived and thriving. - PATRICIA RAYBON

모든 것을 들으시는 하나님

우편 배달 역사상 가장 늦게 배달된 우편물 가운데 89년이 지나 배달된 것이 있습니다. 2008년 영국의 한 집주인이 파티 초대장을 받았는데 그 초대장은 원래 1919년 그 주소에 살았던 이전 거주자에게 발송된 것이었습니다. 그 편지는 영국 우정 공사를 거쳐 집주인의 우편함으로 배달 되었는데, 편지 배달이 지연된 이유는 아직까지 밝혀지지 않은 채 남아 있습니다.

우리 인간은 소통을 위해 최선의 노력을 다하더라도 때때로 실패합니다. 하지만 성경에 하나님은 그의 신실한 백성들의 기도를 들으시는 일에 결코 실패하지 않으신다고 분명히 말합니다. 열왕기상 18장에서 엘리야는 이방신 바알과 여호와 하나님의 극명한 차이를 보여줍니다. 누가 진짜 하나님인가를 증명하는 결전에서 바알의 선지자들이 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 기도하는 것을 보고 엘리야는 이렇게 조롱합니다. “큰 소리로 부르라 그는 신인즉 묵상하고 있는지 혹은 그가 잠깐 나갔는지 혹은 그가 길을 행하는지 혹은 그가 잠이 들어서 깨워야 할 것인지”(27절). 그러고 나서 엘리야가 백성들이 믿음을 돌이킬 수 있도록 응답해 달라고 여호와께 기도하자, 하나님은 그의 능력을 명백히 보여주십니다.

우리의 기도가 엘리야의 기도처럼 언제나 바로 응답되지는 않을지라도 우리는 하나님께서 듣고 계심을 확신할 수 있습니다(시편 34:17). 성경은 하나님이 우리의 기도를 너무나 귀히 여기셔서 소중한 향같이 그분 앞에 있는 “금 대접”에 놓아두신다고 일깨워줍니다(요한계시록 5:8). 하나님은 그분 자신의 완전한 지혜와 방법으로 모든 기도에 응답하십니다. 천국에서는 잃어버린 편지란 없습니다.

GOD HEARS EVERYTHING

One of the longest-recorded postal delays in history lasted eighty-nine years. In 2008 a homeowner in the UK received an invitation to a party originally mailed in 1919 to a former resident of her address. The note was placed in her mailbox via the Royal Mail, but the reason behind its long delay remains a mystery.

Even the best human efforts at communication sometimes let us down, but Scripture makes clear that God never fails to hear His faithful people. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah demonstrated the striking contrast between the pagan god Baal and Jehovah God. In a showdown to demonstrate who the true God was, after Baal’s prophets had prayed for hours, Elijah taunted them: “Shout louder! . . . Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened” (V. 27). Then Elijah prayed for Jehovah to answer so that His people might return to faith, and God’s power was clearly displayed.

While our prayers may not always be answered as immediately as Elijah’s was, we can be assured that God hears them (PSALM 34:17). The Bible reminds us that He treasures our prayers so much that He keeps them before Him in “golden bowls,” like precious incense (REVELATION 5:8). God will answer every prayer in His own perfect wisdom and way. There are no lost letters in heaven. - JAMES BANKS

타코 하나라도

애쉬튼, 오스틴 사무엘슨 형제는 예수님을 섬기고 싶은 강한 열망을 품고 기독교 대학을 졸업했습니다. 그러나 두 사람 모두 교회의 전통적인 사역에 부르심을 받았다고는 느끼지 않았습니다. 그보다는 이 세상에서의 사역에 확실히 더 끌렸습니다. 그들은 어린이들의 굶주림을 해결하고 싶은 마음의 짐을 갚으려고 하나님이 주신 타고난 사업 수완을 발휘해 2014년 타코를 파는 식당을 개업했습니다. 그곳은 그냥 일반 식당이 아닙니다. 사무엘슨 형제는 하나를 팔면 하나를 기부하는 정신으로 식당을 운영합니다. 음식을 팔 때마다 특별히 영양실조에 걸린 아이들에게 영양이 고루 담긴 음식을 제공할 돈을 기부합니다. 지금까지 그들은 60개 이상의 나라에 기부했습니다. 그들의 목표는 한 번 판매에 타코 하나씩 기부하면서 어린이의 기아를 해결하는 일에 동참하는 것입니다.

마태복음 10장에서의 예수님의 말씀은 모호하지 않습니다. 헌신은 말이 아니라 행동으로 증명된다(37-42절)는 말씀은 놀라우리만큼 분명합니다. 그런 행동 중 하나가 “작은 자들”에게 주는 것입니다. 사무엘슨 형제의 그 초점은 어린이들에게 베푸는 것이었습니다. 여기서 “작은 자들”이란 실제 나이가 어린 아이들만이 아니라는 점을 주목하십시오. 그리스도는 이 세상 눈으로 볼 때 “하찮은” 자들, 곧 가난한 자, 병든 자, 죄수, 난민, 여러 모습의 사회적 약자들 어느 누구에게라도 베풀라고 우리를 부르십니다. 그렇다면 무엇을 주어야 할까요? 예수님은 “냉수 한 그릇이라도”라고 말씀하십니다(42절). 냉수 한 잔과 같이 작고 간단한 것도 해당이 된다면, 타코 하나도 당연히 거기에 부합될 것입니다.

EVEN A TACO

Ashton and Austin Samuelson graduated from a Christian college with a strong desire to serve Jesus. However, neither felt called to a traditional ministry in the church. But what about ministry in the world? Absolutely. They blended their burden to end childhood hunger with their God-given entrepreneurial skills, and in 2014 launched a restaurant that serves tacos. But this isn’t just any restaurant. The Samuelsons operate from a buy-one-give-one philosophy. For every meal bought, they donate money to provide a meal specifically designed to meet the nutritional needs of malnourished children. So far, they’ve made contributions in more than sixty countries. Their goal is to be a part of ending childhood hunger—one taco at a time.

Jesus’ words in Matthew 10 are not cryptic. They are astoundingly clear: devotion is evidenced by actions, not words (VV. 37–42). One of those actions is giving to the “little ones.” For the Samuelsons, that focus is giving to children. But take note, the “little ones” isn’t a phrase limited to chronological age. Christ is calling us to give to any who are of “little account” in the eyes of this world: the poor, the sick, the prisoner, the refugee, those disadvantaged in any way. And give what? Well, Jesus says “even a cup of cold water” (V. 42). If something as small and simple as a cup of cold water classifies, then a taco surely fits right in line too. - JOHN BLASE

막대기, 벽돌, 그리고 하나님

마크와 니나는 그들 인생의 다음 단계로 하나님이 어떤 일을 하기를 원하시는지 기도로 물어본 후 그들이 해야 할 일이 도심 지역으로 이사하는 것이라고 마음을 정했습니다. 그들이 빈 집을 사서 한창 수리를 하던 중 폭풍이 몰려왔습니다. 마크가 나에게 보낸 문자 메시지입니다. “오늘 아침 저희는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 제퍼슨 시를 뚫고 지나간 토네이도가 수리 중이던 우리 집을 휩쓸고 갔습니다. 막대기와 벽돌만 남겨두고요. 뭔가 하나님께 계획이 있으신 겁니다.”

우리는 살아가며 속수무책의 폭풍 외에도 놀랍고 당혹스러운 일들을 종종 마주합니다. 그러나 불행의 한가운데에서도 하나님을 계속 바라볼 수 있으면 견뎌낼 수 있습니다.

욥의 인생에서 천재지변으로 재산과 자녀를 잃은 것도(욥기 1:19) 그가 겪은 충격적인 일들 중 하나에 지나지 않았습니다. 바로 이 소식 전에 세 명의 사환들에게서 다른 나쁜 소식들을 이미 들었던 것입니다(13–17절).

단 하루 사이에 우리는 잔치가 통곡으로, 탄생 축하연이 장례식장이 되거나, 인생의 여러 다른 시련을 겪을 수 있습니다. 우리 삶이 한 순간에 재정적으로, 인간 관계에서, 육체적으로, 정신적으로, 영적으로 “막대기와 벽돌”만 남겨진 상태가 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 어떤 폭풍보다도 강하십니다. 삶의 시련을 이겨내려면 하나님께 초점을 맞추는 믿음, 우리가 욥과 다른 이들처럼 “여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다”(21절)라고 말할 수 있는 믿음이 있어야 합니다.

STICKS, BRICKS, AND GOD

After praying about what God was calling them to do in the next phase of their lives, Mark and Nina determined that moving to the urban core of the city was what they needed to do. They purchased a vacant house and renovation was well underway— then came the storm. Mark wrote in a text message to me: “We had a surprise this morning. The tornado that came through Jefferson City, took out our renovation—down to sticks and bricks. God is up to something.”

Uncontrollable storms are not the only things that surprise us and create confusion in our lives. Not losing sight of God in the midst of misfortune, however, is one of the keys of survival.

The weather catastrophe in Job’s life that resulted in his loss of property and the death of his children (JOB 1:19) was but one of the shocking surprises he faced. Prior to that, three messengers had come bearing bad news (VV. 13–17).

On any given day, we can go from feasting to mourning, from celebrating life to processing death, or some other life challenge. Our lives can swiftly be reduced to “sticks and bricks”—financially, relationally, physically, emotionally, spiritually. But God is mightier than any storm. Surviving life’s trials requires faith that’s focused on Him—faith that enables us to say with Job and others, “May the name of the Lord be praised” (V. 21). - ARTHUR JACKSON

누구나 조언자가 필요하다

새 직장 상사를 만나러 그의 사무실로 걸어가며 내 마음은 불안하고 복잡했습니다. 전임 상사가 직원들에게 가혹하고 함부로 했던 터라, 나나 직원들이 눈물을 흘린 적이 한두 번이 아니었습니다. ‘새 상사는 어떤 사람일까?’ 궁금했습니다. 그런데 그의 사무실로 들어서는 순간, 따뜻하게 나를 맞으며 나에 관해, 그리고 나의 애로 사항이 무엇인지 묻는 모습에 두려움이 사라지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 내 말을 경청하는 그의 친절한 표정과 부드러운 말에 그가 진심으로 관심을 가져준다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 예수님을 믿는 그 상사는 내 일의 조언자이자 격려자, 친구가 되었습니다.

바울 사도는 “같은 믿음을 따라 (그의) 참 아들 된”(디도서 1:4) 디도에게 영적인 조언자였습니다. 그는 디도에게 쓴 서신에 디도의 교회 사역을 위한 조언과 지침을 담아 주었습니다. 바울은 어떻게 “바른 교훈에 합당한 것을 말하며”(2:1), “선한 일의 본을 보이며” “부패하지 아니함과 단정함과 책망할 것이 없는 바른 말을 하게”(7-8절) 하는지를 가르칠 뿐만 아니라 본도 보여주었습니다. 그 결과 디도는 바울의 동료요 형제요 동역자(고린도후서 2:13; 8:23)가 되었으며, 많은 사람들의 조언자가 될 수 있었습니다.

EVERYONE NEEDS A MENTOR

As I walked into my new supervisor’s office, I was feeling wary and emotionally raw. My old supervisor had run our department with harshness and condescension, often leaving me (and others) in tears. Now I wondered, What would my new boss be like? Soon after I stepped into my new boss’ office, I felt my fears dissipate as he welcomed me warmly and asked me to share about myself and my frustrations. He listened intently, and I knew by his kind expression and gentle words that he truly cared. A believer in Jesus, he became my work mentor, encourager, and friend.

The apostle Paul was a spiritual mentor to Titus, his “true son in our common faith” (TITUS 1:4). In his letter to Titus, Paul offered him helpful instructions and guidelines for his role in the church. He not only taught but modeled how to “teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine” (2:1), set “an example by doing what is good,” and “show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech” (VV. 7–8). As a result, Titus became his partner, brother, and coworker (2 CORINTHIANS 2:13; 8:23)—and a mentor of others.

Many of us have benefited from a mentor—a teacher, coach, grandparent, youth leader, or pastor—who guided us with their knowledge, wisdom, encouragement, and faith in God. Who could benefit from the spiritual lessons you’ve learned in your journey with Jesus? - ALYSON KIEDA
