트럭 운전사의 손길

전립선암을 극복하신 아버지께 또 췌장암 진단이 내려졌다는 소식은 충격이었습니다. 더 나쁜 것은, 만성질환을 앓고 계시는 어머니 옆에서 아버지가 하루 종일 어머니를 돌보고 계신다는 것입니다. 이제 부모님 두 분 다 보살핌이 필요하게 되어 앞으로 힘든 날들이 기다리고 있을 것입니다.

부모님과 함께 지내기 위해 집에 온 후 어느 주일날 부모님의 교회에 참석했습니다. 그곳에서 헬무트라는 사람이 다가와 도와주고 싶다고 말했습니다. 이틀 후 헬무트는 점검표를 가지고 우리 집을 방문해 말했습니다. “항암치료가 시작되면 음식이 필요하게 될 겁니다. 제가 음식을 도와줄 사람들을 알아보겠습니다. 잔디는 어떻게 할까요? 그건 제가 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 쓰레기는 어느 요일에 가져가나요?” 헬무트는 은퇴한 트럭 운전사인데 우리에게는 천사와도 같았습니다. 우리는 그가 미혼모나 노숙자, 노인 등 다른 사람들을 종종 돕는다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람은 누구나 다른 사람들을 도우라는 부름을 받았는데 (누가복음 10:25-37), 이것을 특별히 잘 하는 사람들이 있습니다. 바울 사도는 그것을 긍휼의 은사라고 부릅니다(로마서 12:8). 이 은사를 받은 사람들은 도움이 필요한 곳이 금방 눈에 들어오고, 실속있게 힘껏 돕고, 지치지 않고 오래 섬길 수 있습니다. 그들은 성령의 감동을 받아 그리스도의 손이 되어 우리의 상처를 만져 줍니다(4-5절).

아버지가 최근 첫 항암 치료를 받았는데 헬무트가 아버지를 병원으로 모시고 갔습니다. 그날 밤 우리 부모님의 냉장고는 음식으로 가득 찼습니다.

하나님은 트럭 운전사의 손길을 통해 그분의 자비하심을 나타내셨습니다.

A TRUCK DRIVER’S HANDS

The news came as a shock. Having already survived prostate cancer, my father had now been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. To complicate matters, my father is my mother’s fulltime caregiver, attending to her own chronic illnesses. With both parents needing care, there would be some difficult days ahead.

After flying home to be with them, I visited my parents’ church one Sunday. There, a man named Helmut approached me, saying he’d like to help. Two days later, Helmut visited our home with a
checklist. “You’ll need some meals when the chemotherapy starts,” he said. “I’ll arrange a cooking roster. What about the mowing? I can do that. And what day is your rubbish collected?” Helmut was a retired truck driver, but to us he became an angel. We discovered he often helped others—single mothers, the homeless, the elderly.

While believers in Jesus are called to help others (LUKE 10:25–37), some have a special capacity to do so. The apostle Paul calls it the gift of mercy (ROMANS 12:8). People with this gift spot needs, rally practical assistance, and can serve over time without getting overwhelmed. Moved by the Holy Spirit, they’re the hands of the body of Christ, reaching out to touch our wounds (VV. 4–5).

Dad recently had his first day of chemotherapy. Helmut drove him to the hospital. That night my parents’ fridge was full of meals.

누구를 위한 것인가

나는 그 광경을 보고 크게 웃었습니다. 군중들이 멕시코의 한 거리에도열해 깃발을 흔들고 색종이 조각을 뿌리면서 교황이 지나가기를 기다리고 있었습니다. 그때 길 한가운데로 길 잃은 강아지 한 마리가 한가롭게 거닐며 군중들의 환호가 마치 자기를 위한 것인 양 씨익 웃는 것처럼 보였습니다. 맞습니다! 개들도 자기의 날이 있다고 하는데, 이날이 그런 날이었습니다.

“남의 쇼에 나타난” 이 강아지는 귀엽다고 하겠지만, 딴 사람에게 갈 칭찬을 가로채는 것은 우리를 망칠 수 있습니다. 이것을 잘 알고 있었던 다윗은 용맹한 그의 장수들이 목숨을 걸고 구해온 물을 마시기를 거부했습니다. 누군가 베들레헴 우물에서 물을 떠오면 아주 좋겠다고 다윗이 아쉬운 듯이 말하자 세 명의 부하가 그것을 말 그대로 받아들였습니다. 그들은 적진을 뚫고 들어가 물을 떠서 가져왔습니다. 그들의 헌신에 감격한 다윗은 그 물을 마실 수가 없었습니다. 그는 마시기를 거부하고, 전제로 “그 물을 여호와께 부어 드렸습니다”(사무엘하 23:16).

칭찬과 명예를 받아들이는 모습을 보면 그 사람을 잘 알 수 있습니다. 다른 사람이 칭찬을 받아야 할 때, 특히 그 대상이 하나님일 때에는 비켜서십시오. 그때의 퍼레이드는 우리를 위한 것이 아닙니다. 그리고 우리 자신에게 주어지는 명예라면, 주는 사람에게 감사하고 모든 영광을 예수님께 드려 찬양을 더욱 가치 있는 것으로 만드십시오. 그 “물” 또한 우리의 것이 아닙니다. 감사한 다음, 하나님 앞에 부어 드리십시오.

WHO’S IT FOR?

The picture made me laugh out loud. Crowds had lined a Mexican avenue, waving flags and throwing confetti as they waited for the pope. Down the middle of the street strolled a stray puppy, appearing to grin as if the cheering was entirely for him. Yes! Every dog should have its day, and it should look like this.

It’s cute when a puppy “steals the show,” but hijacking another’s praise can destroy us. David knew this, and he refused to drink the water his mighty warriors had risked their lives to get. He had wistfully said it would be great if someone would fetch a drink from the well in Bethlehem. Three of his soldiers took him literally. They broke through enemy lines, drew the water, and carried it back. David was overwhelmed by their devotion, and he had to pass it on. He refused to drink the water, but “poured it out before the Lord” as a drink offering (2 SAMUEL 23:16).

How we respond to praise and honor says a lot about us. When praise is directed toward others, especially God, stay out of the way. The parade isn’t for us. When the honor is directed toward us, thank the person and then amplify that praise by giving all the glory to Jesus. The “water” isn’t for us either. 희망을 선택함

나는 겨울에 낮의 길이가 짧아 햇빛이 부족한 지방에 사는 사람들에게 흔히 있는 일종의 계절성 우울증을 앓는 세상의 많은 사람 중 하나입니다. 끝이 안보이는 혹독한 겨울 추위에 두려움이 싹트기 시작하면, 나는 그때부터 낮이 길어지고 따뜻한 날씨가 오고 있다는 것을 보여주는 어떤 소식이라도 열심히 찾습니다.

봄을 알리는 첫 소식 가운데 잔설을 과감히 밀치고 나와서 피는 꽃들을 볼 때, 하나님의 소망도 우리의 가장 어두운 계절을 뚫고 피어날 수 있다는 것을 실감하게 됩니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님으로부터 멀어져 가슴 아픈 “겨울”을 지날 때에도 미가 선지자는 그 사실을 고백합니다. 미가는 그 절망적인 상황을 보면서 “정직한 자가 사람들 가운데 없도다”(미가 7:2)라고 탄식합니다.

그러나 상황이 아무리 나빠 보여도 선지자는 희망을 버리지 않았습니다. 비록 절망 중에 아무런 증거도 보지 못했지만 그는 하나님이 역사하고 계심을 믿었습니다(7절).

삶에서 캄캄하고 때로는 끝이 없어 보이는 “겨울”을 보내며 아무런 봄 소식을 들을 수 없을 때, 우리도 미가와 같은 힘든 상황에 놓이게 됩니다. 그럴 때 절망을 해야 할까요, 아니면 “희망”을 가지고 주님을 바라볼까요? (7절, 새번역).

하나님 안에서 갖는 우리의 소망은 결코 헛되지 않습니다(로마서 5:5). 하나님은 더 이상 “겨울”이 없는 때, 더 이상 탄식과 고통이 없는 때를 우리에게 주실 것입니다(요한계시록 21:4). 그때까지, “나의 소망은 주께 있나이다”(시편 39:7)라고 고백하면서 그분 안에서 안식할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

CHOOSING HOPE

I am one of millions of people worldwide who suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder), a type of depression common in places with limited sunlight due to short winter days. When I begin to fear winter’s frozen curse will never end, I’m eager for any evidence that longer days and warmer temperatures are coming.

The first signs of spring—flowers successfully braving their way through the lingering snow—also powerfully remind me of the way God’s hope can break through even our darkest seasons. The
prophet Micah confessed this even while enduring a heart-rending “winter” as the Israelites turned away from God. As Micah assessed the bleak situation, he lamented that “not one upright person” seemed to remain (MICAH 7:2).

Yet, even though the situation appeared dire, the prophet refused to give up hope. He trusted that God was at work (V. 7)—even if, amid the devastation, he couldn’t yet see the evidence.

In our dark and sometimes seemingly endless “winters,” when spring doesn’t appear to be breaking through, we face the same struggle as Micah. Will we give into despair? Or will we “watch in hope for the LORD”? (V. 7).

Our hope in God is never wasted (ROMANS 5:5). He’s bringing a time with no more “winter”: a time with no more mourning or pain (REVELATION 21:4). Until then, may we rest in Him, confessing, “My hope is in you” (PSALM 39:7). - LISA M. SAMRA

해변에서 드린 기도

결혼 25주년을 기념하는 여행 중에 남편과 나는 해변에서 성경을 읽고 있었습니다. 상인들이 물건값을 부르면서 지나갈 때 우리는 감사를 표하면서도 아무것도 사지 않았습니다. 그중 페르난도라고 하는 사람은 내가 안 사겠다 하자 크게 미소지으면서 친구에게 줄 선물로 사라고 자꾸 권했습니다. 내가 그것마저 거절하자 페르난도는 짐을 꾸려 여전히 웃으며 걸어가기 시작했습니다. 나는 “당신의 하루를 하나님께서 축복해주시길 기도합니다.”라고 말했습니다.

그러자 페르난도는 돌아서더니 내게 이렇게 말했습니다. “맞아요, 주님이 축복하셨어요! 예수님이 제 삶을 바꿔주셨습니다.” 페르난도는 우리 둘의 의자 사이에 무릎을 꿇고는 “여기에 주님이 계신 것을 느낍니다”라고 말하더니, 14여 년 전에 약물과 알코올 중독으로부터 하나님이 그를 어떻게 해방시켜 주셨는지를 이야기했습니다.

그가 시편에 있는 시 한 편을 완전히 암송하고 우리를 위해 기도해주었을 때 내 눈에는 눈물이 흘러내렸습니다. 우리는 그 해변에서 함께 하나님을 찬양하고 그곳에 하나님이 함께 계심을 기뻐했습니다.

시편 148편은 찬양의 기도시입니다. 시편 기자는 모든 피조물들에게 “너희가 주님의 명을 따라서 창조되었으니, 너희는 그 이름을 찬양하여라” (5절, 새번역)라고 하며, “그의 이름이 홀로 높으시며 그의 영광이 땅과 하늘 위에 뛰어나심이로다”(13절)라고 말합니다.

하나님은 우리의 필요를 그분 앞에 내어놓고 주님이 우리를 들으시고 돌보신다는 것을 믿으라고 부르시기도 하지만, 우리가 어디에 있든 그곳에서 드리는 감사 찬양의 기도를 기뻐하기도 하십니다. 해변에서도 말입니다.

PRAYERS ON LA PLAYA

During a trip to celebrate our twenty-fifth anniversary, my husband and I read our Bibles on the beach. As vendors passed and called out the prices of their wares, we thanked each one but didn’t buy anything. One vendor, Fernando, smiled wide at my rejection and insisted we consider buying gifts for friends. After I declined his invitation, Fernando packed up and began walking away . . . still grinning. “I pray God will bless your day,” I said.

Fernando turned toward me and said, “He has! Jesus changed my life.” Fernando knelt between our chairs. “I feel His presence here.” He then shared how God had delivered him from drug and alcohol abuse more than fourteen years earlier.

My tears flowed as he recited entire poems from the book of Psalms and prayed for us. Together, we praised God and rejoiced in His presence . . . on la playa.

Psalm 148 is a prayer of praise. The psalmist encourages all of creation to “praise the name of the Lord, for at his command [everything was] created” (V. 5), “for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens” (V. 13).

Though God invites us to bring our needs before Him and trust He hears and cares for us, He also delights in prayers of grateful praise wherever we are. Even on the beach. - XOCHITL DIXON

강하고 담대하게

어린 케일럽은 매일 밤 눈을 감을 때 어둠이 그를 휘감는 것을 느꼈습니다. 코스타리카의 나무로 만든 집의 삐걱거리는 소리로 그 방의 적막함은 얼마 안가 깨지곤 했는데, 그럴 때마다 다락방에 있던 박쥐들이 더 활발하게 움직였습니다. 어머니가 그의 방에 등불을 놓아주었지만 아이는 여전히 어두운 게 두려웠습니다. 어느 날 밤 케일럽의 아버지가 침대 발판에다 다음 성경 구절을 붙여주었습니다. “강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말며......네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라”(여호수아 1:9). 케일럽은 매일 밤 이 성경 구절을 읽기 시작했고, 집을 떠나 대학으로 갈 때까지 하나님의 그 약속을 침대 발판에 계속 붙여두었습니다.

여호수아 1장에서 우리는 모세가 죽은 후에 지도자가 여호수아로 바뀌는 것을 봅니다. “강하고 담대하라”는 이 명령은 그 중요성을 강조하기 위해 여호수아와 이스라엘 백성들에게 여러 차례 반복되었습니다(6-7, 9절). 분명 그들은 불확실한 미래 앞에서 두려움을 느꼈지만, 하나님은 안심시키시며 “내가 모세와 함께 있었던 것 같이 너와 함께 있을 것임이니라 내가 너를 떠나지 아니하며 버리지 아니하리라”(5절)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

두려움을 느끼는 것은 자연스런 일입니다. 그러나 계속 두려움 속에서 사는 것은 육체적, 영적 건강에 해롭습니다. 하나님이 지난날 자신의 종들에게 용기를 주셨듯이, 우리도 우리와 항상 함께 하겠다고 약속하시는 그분으로 말미암아 강하고 담대할 수 있습니다.

STRONG AND COURAGEOUS

Each night, as young Caleb closed his eyes, he felt the darkness envelop him. The silence of his room was regularly suspended by the creaking of the wooden house in Costa Rica. Then the bats in the attic became more active. His mother had put a nightlight in his room, but the young boy still feared the dark. One night Caleb’s dad posted a Bible verse on the footboard of his bed. It read: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; . . . for the Lord your God will be with you” (JOSHUA 1:9). Caleb began to read those words each night—and he left that promise from God on his footboard until he went away to college.

In Joshua 1, we read of the transition of leadership to Joshua after Moses died. The command to “be strong and courageous” was repeated several times to Joshua and the Israelites to emphasize its importance (VV. 6–7, 9). Surely, they felt trepidation as they faced an uncertain future, but God reassuringly said, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (V. 5).

It’s natural to have fears, but it’s detrimental to our physical and spiritual health to live in a state of constant fear. Just as God encouraged His servants of old, we too can be strong and courageous because of the One who promises to always be with us. - CINDY HESS KASPER

가뭄을 이겨내다

2019년 4월, 캘리포니아 빅터빌의 교외 지역이 바람에 날리는 잡초들로 파묻혔습니다. 인접한 모하비 사막에서 자라던 엉겅퀴가 강풍에 의해 뭉쳐져 그 지역으로 몰려온 것입니다. 그 성가신 잡초는 다 자라면 최대 6피트(180센티미터)까지 자랄 수 있는데, 바람에 의해 씨앗이 흩어지도록 뿌리에서 분리되어 “굴러갈” 때 어마어마한 크기가 됩니다.

나는 예레미야가 “마음이 여호와에게서 떠난”(예레미야 17:5) 사람을 묘사하는 구절을 읽을 때 덤불이 생각납니다. 그는 “혈과 육”을 자기 힘으로 삼는 사람들은 “사막의 떨기나무” 같으며 “좋은 일이 오는 것을 보지 못한다” 라고 말합니다(5-6절). 그리고 사람 대신 여호와를 의뢰하는 사람들이 극명하게 대조되어 있습니다 그들은 가뭄과 같은 상황에서도 물가에 심어진 나무처럼 강하고 깊은 뿌리가 있어 주님으로부터 힘을 얻고 생명으로 가득차게 됩니다.

덤불과 나무는 모두 뿌리가 있습니다. 그러나 덤불은 생명의 원천에 계속 붙어있지 않아 말라 죽습니다. 반면에 뿌리와 연결되어 자라고 번성하는 나무는 어려울 때에도 지켜줄 수 있는 것에 닻을 내리듯 붙어 있습니다. 성경 속의 지혜에서 힘과 위로를 얻고 하나님께 기도하며 굳게 붙들 때, 우리도 그분이 주시는 영양분으로 생명을 얻고 유지하는 것을 경험할 수 있습니다.

SURVIVING DROUGHT

In April 2019, a suburban neighborhood in Victorville, California, became buried in tumbleweeds. High winds pushed the rolling thistles into the development from the adjacent Mojave Desert where the plant grows. At maturity, the pesky weed can grow to up to six feet in height—a formidable size when it releases itself from its roots to “tumble” with the wind to scatter its seeds.

Tumbleweeds are what I picture when I read Jeremiah’s description of a person “whose heart turns away from the Lord” (JEREMIAH 17:5). He says that those who draw their strength from “mere flesh” will be like “a bush in the wastelands” and be unable to “see prosperity when it comes” (VV. 5–6). In sharp contrast are those who put their trust in God instead of people. Like trees, their strong, deep roots draw strength from Him, enabling them to remain full of life, even in the midst of drought-like circumstances.

Tumbleweeds and trees both have roots. Tumbleweeds, however, don’t stay connected to their life-source, causing them to dry out and die. Trees, on the other hand, remain connected to their roots, enabling them to flourish and thrive, anchored to that which will sustain them in times of difficulty. When we hold fast to God, drawing strength and encouragement from the wisdom found in the Bible and talking to Him in prayer, we too can experience the life-giving, life-sustaining nourishment He provides. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

월트 디즈니의 ‘밤비’가 재개봉되었을 때 엄마 아빠들은 자녀들과 함께 어린 시절의 추억을 되살리는 시간을 갖게 되었습니다. 방 하나 가득 트로피를 모은 야외 스포츠 애호가인 남편을 둔 한 젊은 엄마도 그런 부모 중의 하나였습니다. 아이들과 함께 앉은 그녀는 밤비가 사냥꾼에게 엄마를 잃는 순간 아이들과 함께 숨도 쉬지 못하며 신음소리를 냈습니다. 그녀는 순진한 아들이 영화관에서 “나이스 샷!”이라고 외쳤을 때 당황했던 그 순간을 지금까지도 가족 모임에서 이야기합니다.

시간이 지나면서 우리는 아이들이 하는 난처한 말에 대해 웃습니다. 하지만 시편 136편의 사람들이 비슷한 행동을 하는 것을 보고 우리는 뭐라고 말해야 할까요? 하나님이 택하시고 구원하신 이스라엘 백성들이 그들의 원수들을 제외한 모든 피조물과 자신들을 위해 오래 참으시는 주님의 사랑을 기뻐하고 있습니다. 이 시편은 “애굽의 장자를 치신 이”(10절; 출애굽기 12:29- 30참조)를 찬양합니다.

다른 사람의 어머니나 자매, 아버지나 형제가 희생될 때 “나이스 샷” 이라고 외치는 소리와 비슷하게 들리지 않습니까?

그래서 우리는 나머지 이야기가 필요합니다. 예수님의 부활로 빛이 환하게 들어올 때 비로소 온 세상은 한 가족이 되어 모든 사연과 눈물과 웃었던 일들을 즐겁게 나눌 수 있습니다. 예수님을 구주로 영접하고 그분 안에서 생명을 얻을 때 비로소 우리는 주님의 희생으로 모든 사람을 사랑하시는 하나님의 놀라우심을 나눌 수 있게 됩니다.

NICE SHOT?

When Walt Disney’s Bambi was re-released, moms and dads relived childhood memories with their sons and daughters. A young mother, whose husband was an avid outdoorsman with an impressive trophy room, was one of those parents. With her little ones at her side, she experienced with them the gasp and groan of the moment when Bambi lost his mother to a hunter. To this day she’s reminded at family gatherings of her embarrassment when, in all innocence, her little boy shouted out in the theater, “Nice shot!”

In time, we laugh at the embarrassing things our children say. But what are we to say when the people of Psalm 136 do something similar? Israel, God’s chosen and rescued people, celebrate a love that endures for all creation and for themselves—but not for their enemies. The psalm sings the praises of “him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt” (V. 10; SEE ALSO EXODUS 12:29–30).

Doesn’t that sound a bit like a shout of “nice shot” at the expense of someone else’s mother, sister, father, brother?

That’s why we need the rest of the story. Only when the lights come up in the resurrection of Jesus can the whole world be invited into the joy of one family’s stories, tears, and laughter. Only when we receive Jesus as our Savior and are made alive in Him can we share the wonder of a God who loves everyone—at His own expense. - MART DEHAAN

세탁의 날

콜로라도에 사는 채드 그레이엄 목사는 교회 근처의 저소득층 지역을 운전하며 “이웃들”을 위해 기도하기 시작했습니다. 그가 조그마한 빨래방을 발견하고 멈춰 서서 안을 들여다보니 손님으로 가득 차 있었습니다. 그때 어떤 사람이 그에게 건조기를 쓰려는데 동전이 있느냐고 물었습니다. 이 작은 부탁을 계기로 그레이엄 목사의 교회는 매주 “세탁의 날”을 정해 교회 성도들이 동전과 세제를 빨래방에 기부하고 손님들과 함께 기도하며 빨래방의 주인을 도와주고 있습니다.

빨래방을 포함한 그들의 지역 봉사는 예수님이 제자들에게 주신 지상 명령을 잘 보여줍니다. 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니 그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀라”(마태복음 28:18-19).

성령님의 강한 임재는 빨래방뿐만 아니라 “어디든지” 갈 수 있게 합니다. 우리는 진정 혼자 가는 것이 아닙니다. 예수님은 “내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”(20절)라고 약속해 주셨습니다.

채드 목사는 빨래방에서 암으로 투병 중인 제프라는 손님을 위해 기도한 후 그 진리를 경험했습니다. “우리가 눈을 떠보니 거기에 온 사람들 모두가 제프를 향해 손을 뻗고 우리와 함께 기도하고 있었습니다. 그것은 제가 목사로서 경험한 가장 거룩한 순간 중 하나였습니다.”라고 채드 목사는 말했습니다.

이 이야기의 교훈은 무엇입니까? 예수님을 전하기 위해서는 어디든 가라는 것입니다.

LAUNDRY DAY

Driving through a low-income area near his church, Colorado pastor Chad Graham started praying for his “neighbors.” When he noticed a small laundromat, he stopped to take a look inside and found it filled with customers. One asked Graham for a spare coin to operate the clothes dryer. That small request inspired a weekly “Laundry Day” sponsored by Graham’s church. Members donate coins and soap to the laundromat, pray with customers, and support the owner of the laundry facility.

Their neighborhood outreach, which dares to include a laundromat, reflects Jesus’ Great Commission to His disciples. As He said, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (MATTHEW 28:18–19 GNT).

His Holy Spirit’s powerful presence enables “everywhere” outreach, including even a laundromat. Indeed, we don’t go alone. As Jesus promised, “I will be with you always, to the end of the age” (V. 20 GNT).

Pastor Chad experienced that truth after praying at the laundromat for a customer named Jeff who is battling cancer. As Chad reported, “When we opened our eyes, every customer in the room was praying with us, hands stretched out toward Jeff. It was one of the most sacred moments I have experienced as a pastor.”

The lesson? Let’s go everywhere to proclaim Christ. - PATRICIA RAYBON

이 세상은 무엇이 문제일까?

‘이 세상은 무엇이 문제일까요?’ 20세기에 접어들며 런던타임즈가 독자들에게 던졌던 잘 알려진 질문입니다.

정말 중요한 질문이지요. 이에 대해 어떤 사람은 “저에게 그걸 다 설명할 시간을 주실 건가요?” 라고 바로 답을 할지도 모릅니다. 이 세상에 너무나 많은 문제들이 있기에 그렇게 얘기할 수도 있을 겁니다. 여하튼 타임즈는 그 질문에 대해 수많은 응답을 받았는데 그중 눈에 딱 들어오는 답이 하나 있었습니다. 영국 작가이자 시인, 철학자였던 G.K. 체스터튼은 남에게 책임을 돌리려는 대부분의 사람들에게 세 단어의 짧은 답으로 신선한 충격을 주었습니다. “여러분, 제가 문제입니다.”

이 이야기가 진짜인지 아닌지 논란의 여지는 있지만, 그의 답은 분명히 맞습니다. 체스터튼보다 훨씬 전에 바울이라는 사도가 있었습니다. 일평생 모범 시민과는 거리가 먼 삶을 살았던 바울은 자신의 결점들을 말하며 “내가 전에는 비방자요 박해자요 폭행자였다”(13절)라고 고백했습니다. WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE WORLD?

There is an oft-heard story that The London Times posed a question to readers at the turn of the twentieth century. What’s wrong with the world?

That’s quite the question, isn’t it? Someone might quickly respond, “Well, how much time do you have for me to tell you?” And that would be fair, as there seems to be so much that’s wrong with our world. As the story goes, The Times received a number of responses, but one in particular has endured in its brief brilliance. The English writer, poet, and philosopher G. K. Chesterton penned this four-word response, a refreshing surprise to the usual passing-of-the-buck: “Dear Sirs, I am.”

Whether the story is factual or not is up for debate. But that response? It’s nothing but true. Long before Chesterton came along, there was an apostle named Paul. Far from a lifelong model citizen, Paul confessed his past shortcomings: “I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man” (V. 13). After naming who Jesus came to save (“sinners”), he goes on to make a very Chesterton-like qualification: “of whom I am the worst” (V. 15). Paul knew exactly what was and is wrong with the world. And he further knew the only hope of making things right—“the grace of our Lord” (V. 14). What an amazing reality! This enduring truth lifts our eyes to the light of Christ’s saving love. - JOHN BLASE

네덜란드의 한 패션 디자이너 그룹이 “황금 수선”이라는 워크숍을 열고 있습니다. 깨어진 자기 그릇을 금으로 확연히 눈에 띄게 고치는 일본 기술 긴츠키에서 아이디어를 얻어, 참가자들은 수선 자국을 감추기보다는 환히 드러내는 방식으로 함께 옷들을 수선합니다. 초대받은 사람들은 “망가진 소중한 의복을 가져와 금으로 수선합니다.” 옷을 다 고친 다음에 보면 수선 자국은 하나의 장식, 곧 “멋진 흉터”가 되는 것입니다.

옷들은 찢어지고 해어진 부분들이 환히 드러나도록 모습이 달라집니다. 바울이 자신의 약한 것을 “자랑한다”고 말했을 때 아마도 이와 같은 것을 말한 게 아닐까 생각합니다. 그는 “엄청난 계시”를 경험하고도 그것에 대해 자랑하지 않고(고린도후서 12:6), 그의 육체의 “가시” 때문에 스스로 자랑하거나 자만하지 않게 되었다고 말합니다(7절). 그가 말한 그것이 무엇인지는 아무도 정확히 알지 못하지만, 아마도 우울증이나 말라리아 증상, 대적들의 박해, 아니면 다른 어떤 것일 것입니다. 그것이 무엇이었든지 바울은 하나님께 없애달라고 간구했습니다. 하지만 하나님은 “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라”(9절)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

GOLDEN SCARS

In the Netherlands, a group of fashion designers offer a “Golden Joinery” workshop. Inspired by the Japanese technique Kintsugi, where broken porcelain is visibly repaired with gold, participants
collaborate in mending clothes in ways that highlight the mending work rather than trying to mask it. Those who are invited bring “a dear but broken garment and mend it with gold.” As they remake their clothes, the repair becomes ornamental, a “golden scar.”

Articles of clothing are transformed in ways that highlight the places where they were torn or frayed. Perhaps this is something like what Paul meant when he said that he would “boast” in the things that showed his weakness. Although he’d experienced “surpassingly great revelations,” he doesn’t brag about them (2 CORINTHIANS 12:6). He is kept from getting proud and overconfident, he says, by a “thorn” in his flesh (V. 7). No one knows exactly what he was referring to—perhaps depression, a form of malaria, persecution from enemies, or something else. Whatever it was, he begged God to take it away. But God said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (V. 9).

Just as the rips and tears in old clothes can become sights of beauty as they’re remade by designers, the broken and weak places in our lives can become places where God’s power and glory may shine. He holds us together, transforms us, and makes our weaknesses beautiful. - AMY PETERSON
