미움보다 강한 것

어머니 샤론다의 비극적인 죽음을 지켜보는 24시간 동안, 크리스는 이렇게 강력한 은혜의 말을 되뇌고 있었습니다. “사랑은 미움보다 강하다.” 그의 어머니는 다른 여덟 사람들과 함께 사우스캐롤라이나 주 찰스턴에서 수요일 밤 성경공부를 하던 중 살해되었습니다. 무엇이 이십 대 소년의 입술과 마음에서 이런 말이 흘러나오도록 그의 삶을 만들었을까요? 크리스는 예수님을 믿었고, “자기의 온 마음을 다해 모든 사람을 사랑했던” 어머니의 아들이었습니다.

당신이나 당신이 사랑하는 사람이 미움이나 악의, 조소, 나쁜 행위의 표적이 된 적이 있습니까? 당신의 고통이 기도가 되고, 예수님과 크리스같은 사람들이 본이 되어 성령님의 능력으로 미움 대신 사랑을 택하는 용기를 주시기를 소원합니다.

STRONGER THAN HATE

Within twenty-four hours of his mother Sharonda’s tragic death, Chris found himself uttering these powerful, grace-filled words: “Love is stronger than hate.” His mother, along with eight others, had been killed at a Wednesday night Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina. What was it that had so shaped this teenager’s life that these words could flow from his lips and his heart? Chris is a believer in Jesus whose mother had “loved everybody with all her heart.”

In Luke 23:26–49 we get a front row seat to an execution scene that included two criminals and the innocent Jesus (V. 32). All three were crucified (V. 33). Amid the gasps and sighs and the likely groans from those hanging on the crosses, the following words of Jesus could be heard: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (V. 34). The hate-filled initiative of the religious leaders had resulted in the crucifixion of the very One who championed love. Though in agony, Jesus’ love continued to triumph.

How have you or someone you love been the target of hate, illwill, bitterness, or ugliness? May your pain prompt your prayers, and may the example of Jesus and people like Chris encourage you by the power of the Spirit to choose love over hate. - ARTHUR JACKSON

우리 생활에 휴대폰, 와이파이, GPS, 블루투스 기기들이나 전자레인지가 없다고 한번 상상해 보십시오. “미국에서 가장 조용한 마을”로 알려진 웨스트버지니아의 그린 뱅크라는 작은 마을에서의 삶이 바로 그렇습니다. 이 마을에는 세상에서 가장 큰 가동 전파 망원경이 있는 그린 뱅크 천문대가 있습니다. 이 망원경은 아주 먼 우주의 은하들과 중성자별들이 움직일 때 방출되는 자연적으로 발생하는 전파를 “듣기” 위해 “조용한” 환경을 필요로 합니다. 이 망원경은 그 표면적이 축구장보다 더 큰데, 극도로 민감한 망원경에 전자파 간섭이 일어나지 않도록 설정된 13,000 평방마일(약 33,700 평방킬로미터) 넓이의 국립 전파 청정 지역 한가운데 세워져 있습니다.

우리는 성경과 기도 속에서 하나님을 만나기 위해 주변의 산만한 것들로부터 돌이켜 하나님께 의도적으로 귀를 기울여야 합니다. 하나님은 멀리 계시지 않습니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분을 위해 시간을 내어 그분이 우리의 일상에서, 그리고 영원히 우리의 우선순위가 되시길 진실로 바라십니다.

LISTENING BEYOND THE STARS

Imagine life without mobile phones, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth devices, or microwave ovens. That’s the way it is in the little town of Green Bank, West Virginia, known as “the quietest town in America.” It’s also the location of the Green Bank Observatory, the world’s largest steerable radio telescope. The telescope needs “quiet” to “listen” to naturally occurring radio waves emitted by the movement of pulsars and galaxies in deep space. It has a surface area larger than a football field and stands in the center of the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000-squaremile area established to prevent electronic interference to the telescope’s extreme sensitivity.

This intentional quiet enables scientists to hear “the music of the spheres.” It also reminds me of our need to quiet ourselves enough to listen to the One who created the universe. God communicated to a wayward and distracted people through the prophet Isaiah, “Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you” (ISAIAH 55:3). God promises His faithful love to all who will seek Him and turn to Him for forgiveness.

We listen intentionally to God by turning from our distractions to meet Him in Scripture and in prayer. God isn’t distant. He longs for us to make time for Him so He can be the priority of our daily lives and then for eternity. - JAMES BANKS

노래하는 사람의 마음

토요일 아침 6시 33분, 아래층에서 찬송가 소리가 들려왔습니다. 아무도 안 일어났으리라 생각했는데 그것은 막내딸의 칼칼한 목소리가 맞았습니다. 아이는 아직 잠이 덜 깬 채로 벌써 노래를 흥얼거리고 있었습니다.

우리 막내는 늘 노래하는 아이입니다. 사실 막내는 노래를 ‘안 할’ 수가 없는 아이입니다. 아침에 일어나면서 노래를 부르고, 학교 갈 때도 잠자리에 들 때도 노래를 부릅니다. 그 아이는 가슴에 노래를 품고 태어났습니다. 그리고 대부분은 예수님에 관한 노래입니다. 딸아이는 언제 어디서나 하나님을 찬양합니다.

나는 딸아이의 단순하고 헌신적이며 진심 어린 목소리를 좋아합니다. 아이의 마음에서 우러난 즐거운 노래들은 성경 곳곳에서 볼 수 있는 하나님을 찬양하라는 말씀들을 떠올려줍니다. 시편 95편에는 “오라 우리가 여호와께 노래하며 우리의 구원의 반석을 향하여 즐거이 외치자”(1절)라고 하고 있습니다. 계속 읽어내려 가면, 우리는 이 찬양이 하나님이 어떤 분이시며 (“여호와는 크신 하나님이시요 모든 신들보다 크신 왕이시기 때문이로다,” 3절), 우리가 누구의 것인가를 (“그는 우리의 하나님이시요 우리는 그가 기르시는 백성이며”, 7절) 아는 데서 나온다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

딸아이에게는 아침의 첫 생각이 바로 그런 진리들입니다. 하나님의 은혜로, 이 작은 예배자는 하나님을 찬양하는 즐거움을 우리에게 깊이 일깨워주고 있습니다.

A SINGER’S HEART

The praise song drifted downstairs . . . at 6:33 on a Saturday morning. I didn’t think anyone else was awake, but my youngest daughter’s scratchy voice proved me wrong. She was barely conscious, but there was already a song on her lips.

My youngest is a singer. In fact, she can’t not sing. She sings when she wakes up. When she goes to school. When she goes to bed. She was born with a song in her heart—and most of the time, her songs focus on Jesus. She’ll praise God anytime, anywhere.

I love the simplicity, devotion, and earnestness of my daughter’s voice. Her spontaneous and joyful songs echo invitations to praise God found throughout Scripture. In Psalm 95, we read, “Come let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation” (V. 1). Reading further, we learn that this praise flows from an understanding of who He is (“For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods,” v. 3)—and whose we are (“For he is our God and we are the people of his pasture,” v. 7).

For my daughter, those truths are her first thought in the morning. By God’s grace, this little worshiper offers us a profound reminder of the joy of singing to Him. - ADAM R. HOLZ

천천히, 그러나 확실하게

우연히 만난 옛 친구가 그동안 어떻게 지냈는지 얘기할 때 솔직히 나는 믿어지지 않았습니다. 그러나 그 대화를 나눈 지 몇 달 지나지 않아 친구의 음악 밴드가 라디오 싱글 차트의 정상을 차지하고 TV 광고에 그의 히트송이 나오는 등 모든 곳에 등장했습니다. 그는 일약 유명인이 되었습니다.

우리는 굉장한 것, 극적인 것, 단숨에 유명인이 되는 식의 명성과 성공에 집착할 수 있습니다. 그러나 겨자 씨와 누룩의 비유는 하나님 나라(이 땅에서의 하나님의 통치)의 방식을 서서히 조금씩 진행되는, 작고 드러나지 않고 사소해 보이는 것들에 비유합니다.

하나님의 나라는 그 왕을 닮습니다. 그리스도의 사명은 그분의 생명이 씨앗처럼 땅에 묻히고 누룩처럼 반죽에 숨겨지는 것으로 끝이 났습니다. 그러나 주님은 다시 사셨습니다. 흙을 뚫고 나오는 나무처럼, 열을 가했을 때 부푸는 빵처럼 예수님은 다시 살아나셨습니다.

우리도 주님처럼 끈기 있게 계속 스며드는 방식으로 살아야 합니다. 일을 우리 방식으로만 장악하려는 유혹, 권력을 잡고싶은 유혹, 일의 결과물을 가지고 세상에서 자기가 한 일들을 모두 정당화하려는 유혹을 이겨내야 합니다. “나무에 새들이 와서 그 가지에 깃들이는”(마태복음 13:32) 것이나, 떡이 풍성한 만찬을 제공하는 것과 같은 결과는 그리스도께서 만드시는 일이지 우리가 하는 일이 아닙니다.

SLOW, BUT SURE

I ran into an old friend who told me what he’d been up to, but I confess it seemed too good to be true. Within a few months of that conversation, however, his band was everywhere—from charting top singles on the radio to having a hit song pulsing under TV ads. His rise to fame was meteoric.

We can be obsessed with significance and success—the big and the dramatic, the quick and the meteoric. But the parables of the mustard seed and yeast compare the way of the kingdom (God’s reign on earth) to small, hidden, and seemingly insignificant things whose work is slow and gradual.

The kingdom is like its King. Christ’s mission culminated in His life, like a seed, being buried in the ground; like yeast, being hidden in the dough. Yet He rose. Like a tree breaking through the dirt, like bread when the heat is turned up. Jesus rose.

We’re invited to live according to His way, the way that’s persisting and permeating. To resist the temptation to take matters into our own hands, to grasp for power and to justify our dealings in the world by the outcomes they may produce. The outcome— “a tree . . . that the birds come and perch in its branches” (V. 32) and the bread that provides a feast—will be Christ’s doing, not ours. - GLENN PACKIAM

전도할 것인가 밭을 갈 것인가?

집안에 전해 내려오는 이야기에 따르면 빌리와 멜빈이라는 형제가 어느 날 가족의 낙농장에 서서 비행기가 하늘에 글씨를 쓰는 것을 보고 있었다고 합니다. 둘은 비행기가 머리 위에 “GP”라는 글씨를 그리는 것을 보았습니다.

두 형제는 그들이 본 것이 각각 그들에게 어떤 의미가 있다고 여겼습니다. 한 사람은 그것이 “가서 전도하라(Go preach)”는 의미로 생각했고, 다른 하나는 “가서 밭을 갈아라(Go plow)”는 뜻이라고 생각했습니다. 훗날 형제 중 한 사람인 빌리 그레이엄은 복음을 전파하는 일에 헌신해 복음 전도의 상징이 되었고, 그의 동생 멜빈은 그 후로 오랫동안 가족의 낙농장을 착실하게 운영했습니다.

하나님은 어떤 사람들에게는 전임목회자라 부르는 일을 맡기시지만 (에베소서 4:11-12), 다른 직업이나 역할을 담당하는 사람들도 그에 못지않게 중요한 일을 하고 있는 것입니다. 어느 역할이든지 바울이 말한 것처럼 “각 지체가 그 맡은 분량대로 [활동해야 합니다]”(16절, 새번역). 그것은 예수님이 주신 은사를 충실하게 사용해 주님을 높여드리는 것을 의미합니다. 그렇게 하면 전도하는 것이든 밭을 가는 것이든 우리가 섬기거나 일하는 곳마다 예수님을 위한 변화가 일어날 수 있습니다.

PREACH OR PLOW?

According to the family legend, two brothers, one named Billy and the other Melvin, were standing on the family’s dairy farm one day when they saw an airplane doing some skywriting. The boys watched as the plane sketched out the letters “GP” overhead.

Both brothers decided that what they saw had meaning for them. One thought it meant “Go preach.” The other read it as “Go plow.” Later, one of the boys, Billy Graham, dedicated himself to preaching the gospel, becoming an icon of evangelism. His brother Melvin went on to faithfully run the family dairy farm for many years.

Skywriting signs aside, if God did call Billy to preach and Melvin to plow, as seems to be the case, they both honored God through their vocations. While Billy had a long preaching career, his success doesn’t mean that his brother’s obedience to his calling to plow was any less important.

While God does assign some to be in what we call full-time ministry (EPHESIANS 4:11–12), that doesn’t mean those in other jobs and roles aren’t doing something just as important. In either case,
as Paul said, “each part [should do] its work” (V. 16). That means honoring Jesus by faithfully using the gifts He’s given us. When we do, whether we “go preach” or “go plow,” we can make a difference for Jesus wherever we serve or work. - DAVE BRANON

함께 번성하기

남편 앨런은 경기장을 환히 비추는 높은 조명탑 아래 서있었는데, 그때 상대 팀 선수가 공을 높이 쳤습니다. 남편은 공에서 눈을 떼지 않고 구장의 가장 어두운 코너 쪽을 향해 전속력으로 달려가다가 그만 철망 펜스에 부딪치고 말았습니다.

그날 밤 남편에게 얼음주머니를 주면서 “괜찮아요?”라고 물었습니다. 그는 어깨를 문지르며 “그때 친구들이 펜스가 가까이 있다고 말해주었더라면 더 좋았을텐데.”라고 말했습니다.

팀은 함께 움직일 때 가장 잘 작동됩니다. 동료 선수 중 한 명이라도 그가 펜스쪽으로 다가갈 때 소리쳐 알려주었다면 앨런은 부상을 피할 수 있었을 것입니다.

우리는 성경을 통해 교회 교인들은 함께 일하면서 한 팀이 되어 서로를 보살피도록 계획되어 있음을 알 수가 있습니다. 바울 사도는 한 사람의 행동이 전체 교회 공동체에 영향을 줄 수 있기 때문에 우리가 서로 상호 작용하는 방식에 대해 하나님께서 중요히 여기신다고 말합니다(골로새서 3:13-14). 우리 모두가 서로를 섬길 기회를 기쁘게 받아들이고 화합과 평화에 전적으로 헌신할 때 교회는 번성하게 됩니다(15절).

바울은 그의 편지를 읽는 신자들에게 “그리스도의 말씀이 너희 속에 풍성히 거하여 모든 지혜로 피차 가르치며 권면하고 시와 찬송과 신령한 노래를 부르며 감사하는 마음으로 하나님을 찬양하라”(16절)고 가르칩니다. 이렇게 우리는 사랑하는 솔직한 관계를 맺으며 서로를 격려하고 지켜주면서, 감사하는 마음으로 하나님께 순종하고 찬양할 수 있습니다. 이것이 함께 번성하는 길입니다.

THRIVING TOGETHER

My husband, Alan, stood below the towering lights illuminating the athletic field, as a member of the opposing team hit a ball into the air. With his eyes fixed on the ball, Alan ran full speed toward the darkest corner of the field—and slammed into the chain link fence.

Later that night, I handed him an ice pack. “Are you feeling okay?” I asked. He rubbed his shoulder. “I’d feel better if my buddies had warned me that I was getting near the fence,” he said.

Teams function best when they work together. Alan’s injury could have been avoided, if only one of his teammates had yelled out a warning as he approached the fence.

Scripture reminds us that members of the church are designed to work together and watch out for each other like a team. The apostle Paul tells us that God cares about how we interact with each other, because the actions of one person can impact the whole community of believers (COLOSSIANS 3:13–14). When we all embrace opportunities to serve each other, fully devoted to unity and peace, the church flourishes (V. 15).

Paul instructed his readers to “let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit” (V. 16). In this way we can inspire and protect one another through loving and honest relationships, obeying and praising God with grateful hearts—thriving together.-XOCHITL DIXON

블롬의 말은 이스라엘이 무서운 적의 압제에 시달릴 때 하나님께서 그들에게 말씀하신 것과 비슷합니다. 하나님은 이렇게 약속하셨습니다. “내가 너를 굳세게 하리라 참으로 너를 도와주리라 참으로 나의 의로운 오른손으로 너를 붙들리라”(이사야 41:10). 상황이 절망적이고 구조될 가능성이 아무리 없어 보여도 하나님은 그의 백성을 사랑의 보살핌으로 붙들어 주신다고 확신시켜 주셨습니다. 그리고 “두려워하지 말라 내가 너와 함께 함이라 놀라지 말라 나는 네 하나님이 됨이라”(10절)라고 강조하셨습니다.

우리에게 몇 년의 시간이 주어졌든 인생의 어려움은 언제나 우리 앞에 놓여 있습니다. 문제 있는 결혼 생활, 가족을 저버리는 아이, 의사에게 듣게 되는 끔찍한 소식, 심지어 박해까지. 그러나 하나님은 우리에게 다가와 우리를 굳게 붙잡아주십니다. 그분은 우리를 모으시고 강하고 부드러운 손으로 붙잡아주십니다.

GOD HOLDS US

South African Fredie Blom turned 114 in 2018, widely recognized as the oldest living man. Born in 1904, the year the Wright Brothers built their Flyer II, he’s lived through both World Wars, apartheid, and the Great Depression. When asked for the secret for his longevity, Blom only shrugs. Like many of us, he hasn’t always chosen the foods and practices that promote wellness. However, Blom does offer one reason for his remarkable health: “There’s only one thing, it’s [God]. He’s got all the power . . . . He holds me.”

Blom echoes words similar to what God spoke to Israel, as the nation wilted under the oppression of fierce enemies. “I will strengthen you and help you,” God promised. “I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (ISAIAH 41:10). No matter how desperate their situation, how impossible the odds that they would ever find relief, God assured His people that they were held in His tender care. “Do not fear, for I am with you,” He insisted. “Do not be dismayed, for I am your God” (V. 10).

No matter how many years we’re given, life’s hardships will come knocking at our door. A troubled marriage. A child abandoning the family. Terrifying news from the doctor. Even persecution. However, our God reaches out to us and holds us firmly. He gathers us and holds us in His strong, tender hand. - WINN COLLIER

이방인을 사랑하라

다른 나라로 이사 가서 처음 겪었던 일 하나 때문에 나는 환영받지 못한다는 느낌을 받았었습니다. 남편이 설교를 하는 그날 작은 교회에 자리를 찾아 앉았는데, 어느 무뚝뚝한 노신사가 나에게 “저리로 가세요”라고 하는 말에 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그러자 그의 아내가 자신들이 항상 앉는 자리에 내가 앉아 있어서 그랬다고 사과를 했습니다. 몇 년이 지나 나는 교인들이 자기 자리를 정해서 앉는데, 그 자릿값으로 교회에 돈을 낸다는 것과 그래서 아무도 다른 사람의 자리에 앉지 않는다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그 사고방식은 수십 년 동안 그렇게 이어져온 것 같았습니다.

나중에 내가 경험했던 이런 관습과는 달리, 하나님이 이스라엘 민족에게 어떻게 이방인을 환대해야 하는지 가르치신 것을 묵상해보았습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 번창하도록 율법의 토대를 세우시면서, 그들 자신도 전에 이방인이었기에 그들 또한 이방인들을 환대해야 한다고 일깨워주셨습니다 (레위기 19:34). 그들은 이방인들에게 친절하게 대해야 할 뿐 아니라 “[자신들] 같이 사랑해야”(34절) 했습니다. 하나님은 그들을 애굽의 압제로부터 구하셨고, “젖과 꿀이 흐르는” 땅에 거하게 하셨습니다(출애굽기 3:17). 하나님은 이스라엘 민족이 그 땅에 함께 거주하게 된 이방인들을 사랑하기를 원하셨습니다.

LOVING THE STRANGER

When I moved to a new country, one of my first experiences left me feeling unwelcome. After finding a seat in the little church where my husband was preaching that day, a gruff older gentleman startled me when he said, “Move along down.” His wife apologized as she explained that I was sitting in the pew they always occupied. Years later I learned that congregations used to rent out pews, which raised money for the church and also ensured no one could take another person’s seat. Apparently some of that mentality carried on through the decades.

Later, I reflected on how God instructed the Israelites to welcome foreigners, in contrast to cultural practices such as I encountered. In setting out the laws that would allow His people to flourish, He reminded them to welcome foreigners because they themselves were once foreigners (LEVITICUS 19:34). Not only were they to treat strangers with kindness (V. 33), but they were also to “love them as [themselves]” (V. 34). God had rescued them from oppression in Egypt, giving them a home in a land “flowing with milk and honey” (EXODUS 3:17). He expected His people to love others who also made their home there.

As you encounter strangers in your midst, ask God to reveal any cultural practices that might keep you from sharing His love with them. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

지혜를 찾습니다

두 살배기 케네스가 실종되었습니다. 엄마가 911에 전화한 지 3분만에 구조대원이 집에서 두 구역 떨어진 카운티 축제 장소에서 아이를 찾았습니다. 아이 엄마가 나중에 할아버지와 함께 축제날에 그곳에 갈 수 있다고 약속했었는데, 아이는 장난감 트랙터를 타고 미리 그곳에 가서 자기가 좋아하는 놀이기구 옆에 주차해 놓은 것입니다. 아이가 안전하게 집으로 돌아오자 아빠는 지혜롭게 장난감 트랙터의 배터리를 빼놓았습니다.

케네스는 자기가 가고 싶은 곳을 찾아갈 수 있을 정도로 똑똑하긴 했지만, 두 살배기 아이들에게서 또 하나의 중요 덕목인 지혜를 기대하긴 어렵습니다. 그리고 어른들도 지혜롭지 못한 경우가 종종 있습니다. 아버지 다윗 왕에게서 왕위를 물려받은 솔로몬(열왕기상 2장)은 자신이 어린아이와 같다고 고백했습니다. 하나님은 꿈에서 그에게 나타나 “내가 네게 무엇을 줄꼬 너는 구하라”(3:5) 하시자, 그는 “종은 작은 아이라 출입할 줄을 알지 못하고...... 듣는 마음을 종에게 주사 주의 백성을 재판하여 선악을 분별하게 하옵소서” (7-9절)라고 합니다. 하나님은 솔로몬에게 “넓은 마음을 주시되 바닷가의 모래 같이” 하셨습니다(4:29).

우리에게 필요한 지혜를 어디서 구할 수 있을까요? 솔로몬은 지혜의 근본을 여호와를 “경외하는 것”이라고 했습니다(잠언 9:10). 그러므로 우리도 하나님께 그분에 대해 가르쳐주시고 우리의 지각을 넘어서는 지혜를 달라고 간구를 시작하면 됩니다.

MISSING: WISDOM

Two-year-old Kenneth went missing. Yet within three minutes of his mom’s 9-1-1 call, an emergency worker found him just two blocks from home at the county fair. His mom had promised he could go later that day with his grandpa. But he’d driven his toy tractor there, and parked it at his favorite ride. When the boy was safely home, his dad wisely removed the toy’s battery.

Kenneth was actually rather smart to get where he wanted to go, but two-year-olds are missing another key quality: wisdom. And as adults we sometimes lack it too. Solomon, who’d been appointed king by his father David (1 KINGS 2), admitted he felt like a child. God appeared to him in a dream and said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” (3:5). He replied, “I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. . . . So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong” (VV. 7–9). God gave Solomon “a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore” (4:29).

Where can we get the wisdom we need? Solomon said the beginning of wisdom is a “fear” or awe of God (PROVERBS 9:10). So we can start by asking Him to teach us about Himself and to give us wisdom beyond our own. - ANNE CETAS

인생의 용과 싸우기

용과 싸워 본 적이 있습니까? 만약 없다고 말한다면 작가 유진 피터슨은 그 대답에 동의하지 않습니다. 그는 그의 책 ‘한 길 가는 순례자’에서 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “용은 우리가 가진 두려움이 투사된 것이요, 우리를 해칠지도 모르는 모든 것들이 결집된 가공할 만한 것이다...... 거대한 용과 맞닥뜨린 농부는 완전히 얼어붙는다.” 피터슨의 요점은 무엇일까요? 우리의 삶은 생명을 위협하는 건강 문제, 갑작스러운 실직, 결혼의 실패, 관계가 나빠진 방탕한 자녀 등, 그 같은 용들로 가득 차 있다는 것입니다. 이 “용” 들은 우리가 혼자 싸울 수 없는 인생의 엄청난 위험과 덧없음 같은 것들입니다.

그러나 그런 싸움에서 우리에게는 승리자가 있습니다. 동화 속의 승리자가 아닌, 우리를 대신해서 싸우고 우리를 파멸시키려 하는 용들을 물리친 최후의 승리자입니다. 그것이 실패라는 용이든 우리를 파멸시키려는 영적 원수의 용이든, 바울이 예수님에 관해 기록한 것처럼 우리의 승리자가 그것들보다 더 위대하십니다. “통치자들과 권세들을 무력화하여 드러내어 구경거리로 삼으시고 십자가로 그들을 이기셨느니라”(골로새서 2:15). 이 망가진 세상의 파괴적인 힘들은 우리 주님과 상대가 안됩니다!

삶의 용들이 내가 감당하기에 너무 크다고 깨닫는 순간이 바로 우리가 그리스도의 구원 안에서 안식하기를 시작할 수 있는 순간입니다. 우리는 자신 있게 “우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 우리에게 승리를 주시는 하나님께 감사하노니”(고린도전서 15:57)라고 말할 수 있습니다.

FIGHTING LIFE’S DRAGONS

Have you ever fought a dragon? If you answered no, author Eugene Peterson disagrees with you. In A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, he wrote, “Dragons are projections of our fears, horrible constructions of all that might hurt us. . . . A peasant confronted by a magnificent dragon is completely outclassed.” Peterson’s point? Life is filled with dragons: the life threatening health crisis, the sudden job loss, the failed marriage, the estranged prodigal child. These “dragons” are the supersized dangers and frailties of life that we’re inadequate to fight alone.

But in those battles, we have a Champion. Not a fairy tale champion—the ultimate Champion who has fought on our behalf and conquered the dragons that seek to destroy us. Whether they’re dragons of our own failures or the spiritual enemy who desires our destruction, our Champion is greater, allowing Paul to write of Jesus, “Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (COLOSSIANS 2:15). The destructive forces of this broken world are no match for Him!

The moment we realize that the dragons of life are too big for us is the moment we can begin to rest in Christ’s rescue. We can confidently say, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:57). - BILL CROWDER
